force before. That to=day Temper-,
ante Alliance did not do anything to
enforce existing laws. That people
would riot get accommodation under
local option. '
James W. Hogle thought that Tem-
perance people were not asking any-
thing unreasonable. All they were
asking was a chance for the electors
to say what they want. If the price
for accommodation had to be raised
they were willing to pay for it.
Rev. Totten, of Claremont, thought
that they were in a position to meet
Mr. Wilson's arguments, but that this
was no place to take them up. Would
be willing to meet these arguments
and talk with any opposition in a
friendly way.
Mr. Rogers thought this was not the
place to enter into discussion and take
up time of Council.
The Reeve said they would be glad
to receive any points put forward by
the deputation, but did not think this
was the place to enter into any lengthy
discussion.
Rev. Tonkin, in conclusion, spoke in
regard to cost of the election and said
that 586 ratepayers asked for this vote
and thought that this number would
warrant the vote being taken.
The Reeve then stated that the dele-
gation had presented a weighty peti-
tion and that the opposition had pres-
ented as weighty a one and that it
placed the Council in a difficult posi-
tion. but, for the Council would say.
the Council would be frank in their
detsion and report to the Alliance
as soon as possible,
Mr. Parker asked if there would be
time to advertise the By-law the prop-
er time and take a vote at the time of
the municipal elections The Clerk
stated that there was.
The committee on indigents recom-
mended payment to Jos. Burk of 110,

Standing committee on Sheep Kill-

Annis, one sheep killed, 6: said

man, report was adopted.
On motion of Messrs. Wilson and
Palmer the Reeve was instructed to
grant his order on the Treasurer in
favor of the parties—recomurended—i r
the reports of the various standing
committees as presented this day.
Mr. Gerow, seconded by Mr. Pal-
mer, introduced and put through a
was opposed to submitting the by-
law.
Mr. Todd thought that that action
would stop by-law being voted on at
the same time as municipal elections.,
The Reeve said that this Council
was elected by people who signed the
petitions and believed that it was the
Council's duty to submit by-law. If
it did not come before the people at
the municipal elections it would come
up later and incur greater expense.
The petitions showed plainly that
there was a discussion on and it was
best for the people to decide for them-
selves. Was in favor of submitting
by-law at elections of January 1st,
1906.
Councillors Todd and Palmer took
the same view of the matter as th
Reeve.
Mr. Gerow read a statement of the
expenses of the municipality in connec-
tion with local option, also of the loss
to
municipality through deriving no
revenue from the liquor traffic during
the time local option was in force in
this township of $3,411.31, made up as
follows : Election expenses, 831.02;
Loss of revenue during five years no
licenses were issued, ' 2.580.'2, Was
not in favor of submitting by-law.
Mr, Palmer, seconded by Mr. Todd,
introduced a by-law to prohibit the
sale by retail of spirituous, fermented
or other manufactured liquors in the
Township of Pickering. The vote to
be taken on the 1=t day of January,
1906, at each of the eleven polling sub-
divisions in this township by the same
deputy.returning officer's appointed to
conduct the municipal elections.
The by-law was read a first and
second time and the clerk ordered to
publish it as required by law.
On motion of Messrs. Palmer and
Todd T. C. Brown was paid the sum
110 for extra services as care -taker
and repairs.
On &lotion Council adjourned to
meet again on Monday, Dec. 11th,
1905. for the transaction of general
business.
were heard : C. W. Disney, re culvert
•one t 1'; Mr. Michell, re Green River
bridge ; Geo. White, re ditch in front
• of his residence in Dunbarton; T. C.
Brown, re extra meetings. •
A petition was presented asking the
'Council not to submit the local option
by-law to the electors, the said peti-
tion being signed by 453 ratepayers
and 14 commercial travellers.
. , On motion a deputation from the
-Pickering Township Temperance Alli-
ance was heard. Clarkson Rogers,
President, presented a petition asking
that a local option by-law he submit-
ted. Rev. Tonkin was heard in the
matter and 'stated' that petition con-
-tained 586 navies (bona fide..voters).
The question was not tempera ace, but
whether Council would gt:ant petition
of ratepayers. Thought that as re-
presentatives of this township,Council
could not refuse.- Did not wish to
antagonize Councillors, hut intended
to stay with the matter.
Mr. Wilson asked if Temperance
Alliance would be willing to pay extra
-cost of taking this vote.
,. Mr. Tnnkin said Alliance were will-
ing to payexpense.if it was the rule,
but did not think it was custoniarv.
Mr. Wilson thought it would he
better for Alliance to wait and see
should not he there, arid report at a
what Government would do for Tern -
future meeting. If he thought that
rntn the Township hat lfmmr cthercrpl get local option could be carried on sue-
, and hotel -keepers were blamed forcessfully he would support it, hut was
sealing it satwo local optiutl wise ..).1

should say not. In the first place
there is somebody depending on

There is not such a strong demand
for houses this year as usual, but
there are still none too many. The call
for boarding places is very keen, and
will continue -so for some time. Our
big factories are considerably handi-
capped by the trouble men have in
finding board and lodgings. It should
be considered enough expense on
working man to go and hunt up a job
without finding that he cannot get a
place in which to stretch his wearied
limbs at night. What this town
wants is a number of extensive board-
ing houses, from 25 to 1011 rnen. Such
places could demand good rates, and
could he made very profitable, we be-
1ieVe. In the meantime there are
many good citizens .who could &Sake
extra money to buy coal by taking
a couple of boarders at 1#3.51 for the
winter. Empty rooms could be made
to pay tent and taxes.—V ndicator.
