In order to allay the fears of people living in this area, I would like to point out that the plans for Highway 407 and the Parkway Belt east of the North Pickering Development Project will not be completed for approximately two years, and it will be at least two years before any announcements are made. It will probably be at least fifteen years before Highway 407 is built east of the North Pickering Development Project. If you have any inquiries regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. At this point in time the route of Highway 407 and the Park- way Belt through this area has not been resolved. Horn Nursing and Child Care. An additional 34,363 participated in the special summer Save A Life program which teaches Artifical Respiration. Following the Annual Meeting an Investiture was held at St. Paul's Anglican Church when individuals who have given outstanding service to St. John Am- bulance were presented with awards by Ontario's Lieutenant Governor, W. Ross Macdonald. The following three Scarborough residents were among the recipients: Frederick G. D. Hardstaff, a Service Medal and Priory Vote of Thanks to Donald Wallace and Frederick C. Tugnutt. Thurs. June 14th, 1973 THE POST Page 13 Living Can Be Ageless Retirement: What then? The time to answer "What Then ?" is before the day of retirement comes. That may not be due until one reaches 6o or 65 but at 40 a person should be learning about it and developing the ex- p ertise to cope with it and accumulating the necessities to make it comfortable. It is sad to see those who reach retirement facing difficulties which they might have avoided by forethought and planning. Because more people are living longer and retiring earlier, this phase of life has become increasingly important to society, as well as to you as an individual. Retirement doesn't mean being cut off from life. Today it means the beginning of a brand new and possibly better life. It's the discovery that "Living Can Be Ageless". But, because retirement does represent one third of your life the planning itself is important. As Robert Thomas Allen, author of "Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life" suggests, it should be done in the same spirit and with the same exuberance as you'd plan a year in Europe or the opening of an exciting new business. This is t he third consecutive year that Ontario has set a special week apart in recognition of its older residents, beginning June 11th. The week is organized through the Hames for the Aged Branch of the Mwitstry Of Community and Social Services, under Minister Rene Brunelle. As in previous years. one major objective is to focus attention on the three- quarters of a million senior citizens who have con- tributed so much to the development of Ontario. The week is designed to promote greater public awareness of the vast resource of skills and experience the elderly have to offer, and to en- courage senior citizens themselves to remain ac- tively involved in their communities. This year Senior Citizens' Week has a second objective. A province -wide pre- retirement campaign is being introduced to en- courage men and women 40 years and over to plan for their own retirement years. Senior Citizens themselves are proving to be the strongest spokesmen for retirement planning. As the "professionals" on aging and "retirement" they are preparing a wide variety of activities to celebrate the week in their local com- munities. Programs and activities are being organized at the community level throughout Ontario by municipalities, homes for the aged, el derly persons' centres, senior citizens' clubs and organizations, and various service clubs and groups. Retirement doesn't mean being cut off from life. Today it means the beguming of a brand new and possibly better life. It's the discovery that "Living Can Be Ageless", or as Marshall McLuhan aptly stated, "Look to Retirement with Anticipation". Lacrosse Needs Your Help Who would ever think that lacrosse would give librarians a headache. but that's what happened when Bill Sneyd founded and organized the Beaches Lacrosse Club in 1968. That first season. Mrs. Tamosetis, Williamson Road School librarian had fifty requests for a book on lacrosse and could .obtain only one on the rules of the game from the Dept. of Health and Welfare and waited many months before more copies arrived. Although lacrosse was officially designated as Canada's National Sport in 1867, no boosts on lacrosse heroes are to be found. It seems that the people involved in lacrosse have always been too busy keeping lacrosse running and haven't oaken t he t ime to write books or a history of the game. Sports Canasta is doing something about this neglect of part of our Canadian heritage. It has hired Mr. Douglas For- sythe. a post -graduate student at Carleton University, Ottawa, for Ihle summer to research and write a history of Canadian Lacrosse. "If you have any written material, no matter how old or new it is for if you know an old timer who has a wealth of data stored in his noggin", the Canadian Lacrosse Association would like to hear from you. Drop Douglas Forsythe a line c/o Canadian lacrosse Assn., 333 River Road, Ottawa, Ontario. KIL 889. Material submitted will be donated to the Canadian I.acrosse Hall of Fame, deposited in Public Archives or returned to the donor, according to the wishes of the dorwr.
