by Carol Hughes
Pickering Township Planning Board has upheld its original desicion on
the rezoning of land at Highway #2 and Liverpool Road to permit the con-
struction of a Sheridan Mall for Pickering.
A counter -application had been filed by the Bay Ridges Plaza Limited,
owned by Oshawa Wholesalers, to reverse this decision, which changed the
land from private open space to commercial general.

$3000 Granted For Senior Citizens
in order to kick off
"Senior Citizens
Week" on June 21st,
David Bass, Direct-
or of Recreation asked
Pickering Township
Council for $1000 to
implement a program
of acitvities for that
week and an additional
$2000 for an ongoing
program throughout
the year.
Mr. Bass said in talk-
ing with the Senior
Citizens group, "I
found they preferred to
plan their own activi-
ties for the most part
and their greatest
drawback is lack of
transportation. Con-
sequently he said this
is the area in which
he feels the Township
can do the most good.
He also mentioned his
proposed plan of ac-
tivities, which by the
Senior Citizen's own
admission, is too hec-
tic for the one week,
will probably stretch
over three weeks and
these people are pre-
sently in the process
of drawing up their own
plans of what they
would prefer to do and
for that reason, he
would not like to re-
lease his plans to the
press.
He said he found that
these individuals were
not to enthused about

He said he found this Ing program but can-
to be true in past ex-
periences and will be
treading very care-
fully in the Recrea-
tional Department's
efforts to help them.
Township Clerk Doug
Plitt said Rev. Rhodes
from St. Paul on the
Hill has two univer-
sity students looking
at the rolls for the
number of senior citi-
zens in an effort to
contact everyone, not
just those that belong
to a Senior Citizens
Club, in order to ad-
vise them of the forth-
coming program.
Councillor Sherman
Scott said he felt some
groups financed them-
selves rather well
through bazaars and
such, but do suffer
greatly from lack of
transportation and
agreed this area was
probably where the
Township could do the
most good. He said
when the reasons for
raising money become
less and less, so does
the participation in the
cluos since they then
have no purpose.
Councillor Vic Rudik
said this is an area Jim Gates,

looked at thoroughly."

An open meeting was held on Tues. June 15th
by the Planning Board to hear representations
by people who were opposed, or in favor of, the
Bay Ridges Plaza application.
Many Township residents were on handlending
their support to the Board's decision and briefs
presented by the West Shore Ratepayers Assoc-
iation and the Bay Ridges Ratepayers Associa-
tion urged the Planning Board to turn down the
Plaza's application.
The briefs stated the Bay Ridges Plaza associa-
tion was trying to hold onto its monopoly where
lack of competition allows them to charge what-
ever the market will bear.
Excessive travelling to the east or the west
to do the necessary family shopping was anuis-
ance, said the briefs and also commented on the
additional tax assessment and employment op-
portunities the development would bring.
Mr. B.S. Onyschuk, the solicitor representing
the Bay Ridges Plaza Association stated the dev-
elopment was pre -mature and not necessary at
this time. He commented the Ajax Mall, which
opened a year ago, still had several stores not
rented.
He also stated a shopping centre of 226,000
sq. ft. needed a population of at least 100,000
people to support it, while Pickering Township,
including the Village and Ajax, had a mere 41,000
population.
Mr. Onyschuk also said Council had approved
the amendment to the Official Plan on March
29th, 1971, which was one day before the Plan-
ning Board dealt with the matter.
"This development will affect all the retailers
in the Township, not only the ones I represent,
and it will cut their business in half." he said.
He said he thought most of the shopping would
still be done in Oshawa or Toronto, as it is
now, and urged Planning Board to reverse its
decision.
Mr. W. Lawson, representing several devel-
opers who won land in the surrounding area also
opposed the Planning Board's original decision
and supported the Bay Ridges Plaza application.
He said the Board had dealt with only a 10 -
acre portion of land when the entire area was

Students in Osnawa,
Ontario, are going to
be making that city a
more pleasant place to
live in, with the help
of a $45,000 grant from
the federal govern-

grant, part of the
government's Oppor-

recently by Secretary
of State Gerard Pelle-

The students will
clear a walking trail
along both banks of the
seven - mile - long
Oshawa Creek, and
remove large rocks
and other obstacles
from the middle of the
creek's channel to
permit easy canoe-
ing.
Nature trails will al-
so be built from the
banks of the creek. The
entire trail system
will be equipped with

He said "The Bay Ridges Plaza Association has
taken it upon themselves to decide that a person
or corporation owning land should be denied the
use of their land even though the Township has
considered all the factors governing their pro-
posed use of the land."
He said he thought the Board was seeing
"strange bedfellows here" as the Bay Ridges
Plaza Association "has and wants to keep" and
the group of people Mr. Lawson represented who
would like to have the services J.D.S. Invest-
ments would bring to the Township, namely
-sewers north of 401. "This is a lovely situa-
tion," said Mr. Rudik.
"In my opinion, I can not see this present ap-
plication as nothing more than a move to keep
the Township dormant, depending on the needs of
the surrounding municipalities of Toronto and
Oshawa." said Mr. Rudd..
He said he felt this development and servicing
would instigate future growth in the area.
Councillor Don Kitchen said, in an interview
after the meeting, the development would offer
the opportunity to enable resident of the Town-
ship to shop locally for the basics.
He said it would "provide a large number of
jobs in the area and people would not have to
travel as far to get to them."
"It would also increase the assessment, there-
by improving the industrial - commercial/
residential ratio," said Mr. Kitchen.
Mr. Kitchen, who represents the Bay Ridges
area, said "the punching of services to the north
Highway 401 to service the new mall opens up
large acreages to the north of 401 and there is
potentially a large development."
He said the impact of this development could
P.T.M.H.L. Banquet
The first banquet of the P.T.M.H.L. took place
at the Pickering High School, June 12 and judg-
ing from the happy faces was a great success.
The morning session, chaired by Chuck Snow
saw special guest stars, Gerry Meehan and
Ivan Irwin.
Ivan Irwin gave an excellent speech, the theme
being "how to make the most of your Ice time.
Gerry Meehan followed with an outline of
what would be taught at his new hockey school
to be held at the Don Beer. Sports Arena, July
through to August.
Harvey Kirk attended as a father but ended
up as popular as the two stars, to jubilant
autograph seekers.
The afternoon session, chaired by past presi-
dent Bob MacIntyre, was also a success, al-
though not nearly as well attended.
Team awards were presented to the play offs
winners and runners up and to the teams
finishing first at the end of scheduled games.
Awards also were presented to the top goalie
and the highest point scored in each division.
Every boy that participated in house league
hockey this year received a crest.
A delicious lunch was served thanks to the
house league mothers association.

WEST ROUGE NEWS by K

HAPPY DAYS
It is fervently hoped that the coming week will
be especially pleasant for some very deserv-
ing people.
Sun. June 20th is Fathers' Day and some of the
,best Dads in the world live in Pickering Town-
ship. So let's pamper them on their particular
day.
June 20th to June 26th has been designated as
Senior Citizens' Week, and the Dads in this age
group are due for an extra measure of good
things. But of course there are many others too -
both male and female. Make this aweek they will
cherish throughout the following year!
CANOE CLUB
Here is exciting news for all Canoe Club en-
thusiasts! The first Regatta of the season will
take place on Sat. June 19th at Port Credit, host-
ed by the Mississagua Canoe Club.
It is expected that about six Ontario clubs will
take part in the v arious races which include kay-
aks, two and four -man canoes and war canoes,
paddled by both girls and boys from Bantam to
Seniors. For West Rouge supporters the colours
to cheer for are red jerseys with a diagonal
black stripe.
CUBS & SCOUTS
The Cuboree held on May 29th at Greenwood
Conservation Area marked the official closing
of the season for Wolf Cubs in the district. But
already plans have been made for another busy
and exciting weekend camp -out to take place
which is near Aliston. More details will be an-
nounced later on. In the meantime why not make a
note of the date?
Forty-five Cubs and Scouts had a great time on
Sun. May 30th when they travelled by bus to Nia-
gara Falls. Funds for the trip were supplied by
the West Rouge Scout and Cub Mothers Aux-
iliary. Accompanying the boys on their excur-
sion were Phyllis and Jack Vinge, Addy and Alex
Stashans and Chris. Crooks who has been as-
sisting Mrs. 5tashans; with "B" Pack Cubs. A

high point in the day for some of the boys was
the experience of going down under the Falls.
The recent Bottle Drives conducted by the
Scouts and Cubs in the West Rouge area were
most successful and the boys would like to thank
all those who contributed both returnable bottles
for this project.
VISITORS
Recent visitors to West Rouge included Mrs.
Gwen Travis, mother of Val McIntyre, who came
from Winnipeg to attend the Graduation Cere-
mony of her grand -daughter, Dale, at Guelph
University.
Visiting at the home of Pat and Fred Stacey
and family was Bob ,Campbell of Philadelphia.
The Stacey family met Bob in Antigua on their
recent trip to the Carribean Islands and invited
him to visit Canada. While here he accompanied
Linda to Dunbarton High School where be took
part in some of the English Class debates. Bob
also saw a few of Toronto's attractions and plans
to reutrn for a longer stay later on.
Alberta and Ed Katinsly from Buffalo spent the
American Independence Day holiday as guests
of Iris and L"Tarley. During their stay they at-
tended a AilAxe at Don Beer Sports Arena.
GRADUATION'
The Ah=ont Nursing Home was the scene of
a happy occasion on June 8th for five Nurses'
Aides who recently completed an upgrading
course.
Mrs. Zelma Gideon, Mrs. Jean Irwin, Mrs.
Alleyne Miller, Mrs. Jean MacDonald and Mrs.
Helen Manchen all received their diplomas from
Mr. B. Allington, Head of Training and Industry,
Geo. Brown College. Mrs. M. Oldfield, Assistant
Director of Nursing, Altamont Nursing Home,
presented the graduates with new caps denoting
their additional training.
Other speakers at the ceremony were Mr. D.
Archer, Administrator, and Mrs. R. Faulkner,
Director of Nursing. Altamont Home;and Mrs. J.
Woodmansey, who instructed the class.
HOCKEY DANCE
The West Rouge Old Timers Hockey Assn. will
bold a dance on Sat. June 19th at the Don Beer
Sports Arena. Tickets at just $2 per person, in-
clude special prizes, bar facilities and refresh-
ments, and may be obtained from any member of
the Association, or purchased at the door. Every-
one welcome.
Money raised will be used to supply equip-
ment for this group of good sportsmen, many of
whom coach boys' teams throughout the long
hockey season. Dancing starts at 8 p.m. Seeyou
there!
FAREWELL
The following staff members are leaving West
Rouge School at the end of the current term:
Mr. Garner Charles, Principal -,Mrs. Helen Brk-
lacich and Mrs. Maureen Coleman, Primary and
Junior Opportunity Classes; Miss Elizabeth
Wagman, Librarian; Mrs. Ruth McInnes, Grade
4 and Mrs. Elena Watson, Grade 2.
Mr. Charles will be Principal of Lincoln Ave.
School, Pickering, and Mrs. Watson will be
teaching at that school. Mrs. Coleman and Miss
Wagman will join the staff at the Harwood Voca-
tional School where Mr. Alex. Munroe is Princi-
pal. Mrs. McInnes will teach at Parkside El-
ementary School, and Mrs. Brklacich will be the
Speech Consultant for Ontario County.
With these teachers go Best Wishes for much
success and happiness in their new locations.
GREETINGS
Happy Fathers' Day to all the Dads in our area
on June 20th.
Birthday Greetings on June 22nd to Christena
McDonald, and on June 24th to Linda Farley.
Belated Good Wishes to Judy Oxley who had a
birthday on June 4th. Also late, but sincere,
Happy Anniversary Wishes to Averil and Erwin
Deighan, whose special day was June 15th.
KLONDIKE DAYS
Over 270 Scouts from the Owasco District at-
tended the Camporee held on May 14th, 15th
and 16th in the Claremont Conservation Area.
The theme was "Klondike Gold Rush Days"
which gave the boys great scope in setting up var-
ious stalls for games of skill, chuck wagons sup-
plying food, "saloons " dispensingpop, andeven
an old-time jail. This kept the Scouts on their
toes at all times as even a slight misdemeanor
could result in a jail sentence. Other attractions
included trail riding, fishing and "shooting"
with air pistols.
The organization and setting up of the camp was
handled by Troop Scouters from Ajax, Dunbarton
and Rouge Hills, although all actual work was
performed by the boys. Normally the respons-
iy Brooks
abilities involved in a Camporee of this type are
under the jurisdiction of Scout Leaders who are
official members of the Boy Scouts Assn. The
young men deserve much credit for a most suc-
cessful event.
Scout Masters present were given the V.I.P.
treatment. Ajax Rover Scouts caught brook trout
in one of the streams, and the Rangers of Clare-
mont cooked a fish dinner.
SICK LIST
Best Wishes for a speedy recovery to John
Deighan who had the misfortune to fall out of
a tree on Sun. June 6th and was placed in the
Intensive Care Unit of Scarborough Centenary
Hospital with a broken arm and ruptured spleen.
The kind concern and assistance given promptly
by good neighbours were greatly appreciated by
-his parents, Averil and Erwin Deighan Glad to
lsay latest reports are that John is making good
progress.
HOCKEY
It does seem like a crazy mixed up world to
be still talking Hockey in June, but after all, the
big fellows were still playing in the middle of
May.
Some of our smaller players - the West Rouge
Paperweights - who were coached by Don Cham-
bers and managed by Graham Vallance, had a
great time on Sat. June 5th when they attended a
Barbeque held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Val-
lance, Ravine Park Cres.
SOCCER
In West Rouge Soccer games, Atom Division,
on Tues. June 8th, the Red Devils defeated the
Spurs 7 to 0. Goals were scored by Mike Ben-
nett, Doug Gray, one each, and Steve McIntosh
and Albert Stansfield with two apiece.
The Blue Bombers took the Yellow Flyers 4
to 1, with goals scored by Jim Jessup for the
Flyers; and by Gary Duncan and Dirk Reyter
one each, and Mark Falcic with two for the
Bombers.
BROWNIE OUTING
Sixty Brownies and ten leaders from the 3rd
West Rouge and 2nd Rouge Hills Brownie Packs,
had a delightful time on Sun. June 6th when they
visited Toronto's Pioneer Village. For some it
was the first time, while others were glad to see
this fascinating place again, and all found much to
see and admire.
FIELD DAY
A rousing cheer for West Rouge Elementary
School, who won the highest humber of points
at the recent Track & Field Day which included
girls and boys from Kindergarten to Grade 6
in all the schools of the former Pickering Dis
trict No. 2.
West Rouge completed the day's events with 26
firsts, 14 seconds and 14thirds. Winnerswenton
to compete in the next round of school field days,
and results will be announced later on.
"VARIETY 71"
On Sun. June 20th the Holy Redeemer P.T.A.
will sponsor a show entitled "Variety 71 which
will include local talent in many fields of enter-
tainment.
Two performances will be held, one at 2 p.m. in
the afternoon and one at 8 p.m. in the vening.
Admission is $1 for adults and 50 cents for child-
ren. Location is the Holy Redeemer School, Ajax.
NEW ARRIVAL
Congratulations and Best Wishes to June and
Harry Turcotte, Brownfield Gdns., whose new
son arrived on June 12th. The Turcotte's now
have a "full house" with two girls and three
boys. All well and happy.
BEAN SUPPER
Thoughts of an old time Bean Supper bring back
pleasant memories of long ago. Haven'teven
heard of such an event for many years, so was
pleased to bear that the Pickering Township
Historical Society will have one on Fri. June 18th
from 5 to 7 p.m. It will be held in the Brougham
Museum Grounds, and will be followed by atour
of the museum from 7 to 9 p.m.

TOTAL HEALTH CARE
I believe the Ontario Government must concen-
trate on a total health care program which will
emphasize the prevention as well as the curing
of disease. A total health care program will
care for an individual from the first day of
illness or accident until he is completely
rehabilitated, or until his illness or disability
has become stabilized.
The cost of a total health plan would be tre-
mendous and there would be no way to launch
it at one swoop, however, I believe that it must
be begun, perhaps by means of a five year
plan, and the various phases of the program
instituted on a priority basis.
The most basic need is the proper and most
economic type of accommodation for a given
patient's particular situation. In Ontario we have
the finest active treatment hospitals available.
If they were used only for the purpose for
which they were intended, there would be a
sufficient number to meet our present needs
and the needs of the near future, but to do this
we must provide other progressive care fa-
cilities, which today are in very short supply.
Too many a c t i v e treatment beds are now
occupiodby patients who should be in other less
expensive types of accommodation. After the
acute 'phases of an illness the rehabilitation
hospital where a patient would not require the
sophi5rIc'ned egUtpw tt and specialized care of
an actite tteatme=hospital.

PREMIER WILLIAM DAVIS ON SPADINA
"I have no doubt that while the estimated cost
of this expressway has doubled over the past
seven years, the numbers of the general public
opposed to the undertaking have multiplied
many times over. Whether such would consti-
tute a majority or not I cannot say, but it is at
least a substantial and significant minority,
including I might add, vast numbers of those
who will inherit the cities and the environ-
ment we are now creating. I am confident that
if the people of the Toronto of tomorrow were
consulted, they would give overwhelming ap-
proval to the decision their Government has
taken today.
"Mr. Speaker, I would express the hope that our
conclusion will lead us directly into intensive
discussion which will apply to the future and
that we will not find ourselves re -arguing the
past.'
