Regional staff,
politicians go
door-to-door
for clear-bag project
By Kristen Calis
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING — The streets of Picker-
ing’s Amberlea neighbourhood will soon
be lined with clear bags on garbage day.
Regional staff have been stopping by
homes in the neighbourhood to let resi-
dents know about the pilot project and
answer questions. The News Advertiser
recently tagged along with staff, Regional
Chairman Roger Anderson and Ward 1
Regional Councillor Bonnie Littley on
one of those days. The same project is
taking place in a similar neighbourhood
in Courtice.
The 750 residents in Amberlea are
asked to put their compostables into the
green bin and their recyclables into the
blue bin as usual beginning Jan. 12. The
clear bags will allow garbage collectors to
see if the bags contain waste that could
be recycled or composted.
“If you have a green bin and a blue
box nothing changes except the colour of
your bag,” Coun. Littley said.
The first stop was at Elsie Hetherman’s
house. She asked why and when a bag
would be left at the curb. Coun. Littley
said it won’t be left behind if it contains
small amounts, such as an apple core or
a sour cream container.
Waste management officer Craig
Bartlett said the project is in three phas-
es. The first teaches residents about the
program and staff will monitor what is
set out at the curb. In the second phase,
staff leave notices at residents’ doors in-
forming them of waste that could have
been composted or recycled. In the final
phase, bags are left behind if they con-
tain significant amounts of recyclable or
compostables.
Commissioner of works Cliff Curtis
said if a bag is left behind, the resident
will be expected to sort through it and
put the bag out the next time garbage is
collected. But he emphasized that’s only
possible during the last phase, since the
first two focus on education.
“This is just to gauge public participa-
tion,” Mr. Curtis said.
Ms. Hetherman had a number of ques-
tions regarding recycling since she is still
unclear on what is recyclable and what
isn’t. “I really do feel there’s a lot more
education needed,” she said.
What is recyclable and compostable is
provided in the waste collection calen-
dars, Mr. Bartlett noted.

PICKERING — Daniel Hunt, a Grade 10 student at Pine Ridge Secondary School, works the
grill during William Dunbar Public School’s third annual PJ Pancake Breakfast. The school raised
$5,000 to support extracurricular activities, thanks to the food donation by Golden Griddle and
Allan’s Independent Grocer, and help from parent and community volunteers.

communication regarding the clear bag
pilot was useful, especially since she’d rather
avoid going online for information.
Mr. Anderson said as long as people know
they can contact staff or call the Region with
any questions, the program should be ben-
eficial. “I think it’s another opportunity to
see if we can get to our 70-per cent diversion
target,” he said.
Another resident had already received a
visit from Regional staff and felt OK with the
project, but was concerned about privacy.
Mr. Bartlett explained each household can
put one opaque bag inside of the clear one.
He also said alternative arrangements will
be made for those with medical issues.
The woman also felt residents didn’t have
any say before the decision was made to put
the pilot in Amberlea.
“We’re in the program,” she said. “We
don’t have a choice.”
Coun. Littley and Mr. Anderson remind-
ed her of the public meetings on Dec. 9
and Dec. 10 at St. Mary Catholic Secondary
School (1910 Whites Rd., Pickering) from
6:30 to 9 p.m.. Also, Coun. Littley said, a
neighbourhood had to be chosen to col-
lect data to see if the program worked, and
Amberlea was successful in participating in
the green bin pilot. Based on results of the
pilot, the Region will decide whether or not
to implement clear bags Durham-wide.

Nathan Kelly, 3,
stabbed in attack
on family
OSHAWA — The three-year-old
boy injured in a shocking attack
on his family last Saturday in south
Oshawa has passed away.
Durham police confirmed
Wednesday afternoon Nathan
Kelly had succumbed to his inju-
ries earlier in the day.
His mother, 26-year-old Leslie
Kelly, died at the scene of the at-
tack on Glen Street in Oshawa Sat-
urday.
Ms. Kelly and her son are Dur-
ham’s fourth and fifth homicide
victims of the year.
Nathan’s father, Rick, 29, and
five-year-old brother Riley were
also injured when knife-wielding
Gino Petralia burst into their town-
house in the midst of a family cel-
ebration. Police said Wednesday
they are recovering in hospital and
expected to survive. Nathan had
clung to life since being rushed to
hospital.
Durham police later shot and
killed Mr. Petralia. The Province’s
Special Investigations Unit is in-
vestigating that shooting.
It’s believed a child custody dis-
pute -- not involving either of the
young Kelly children -- sparked
Mr. Petralia’s murderous rampage.
In a media release Wednesday
afternoon Durham police spokes-
man Dave Selby extended thanks
from the family to the community
for the kindness and compassion
shown in the wake of the ghastly
events.
“The family is making private
funeral arrangements for both
Leslie and Nathan and asks that
the media and the public respect
their privacy and allow them to
mourn these terrible losses pri-
vately,” Mr. Selby stated.
Mr. Selby also noted the family
had consented to donate Nathan’s
organs.
Two trust accounts have been
established to assist the survivors
of the incident. Donations to the
Kelly Family Trust can be made at
any CIBC branch through account
number 00892/03-22938 or at any
TD Canada Trust branch via Tran-
sit 3184, Account 6322034.
As well, donations of money
and Christmas gifts are now being
collected at the following loca-
tions to help the surviving family
through the holiday season and
the coming months.
• The Tim Hortons store at 1251
Simcoe St. N. is now accepting toy
donations for the family;
• Wal-Mart Peterborough, lo-
cated at 1154 Chemong Rd. is ac-
cepting monetary donations and
has vowed to match each donation
and deposit all money collected
into the trust fund established for
the Kellys. The store will also be
hosting fundraising events for the
Kellys the weekend of Dec. 5-7.
• Local mall Santa, Shawn Chi-
asson, will be delivering donated
gifts to the Kelly family on Christ-
mas Eve. Toys can be dropped
off at Red Carpet Productions,
33b Oak St. in North York, or at
the Pickering Flea Market, 1400
Squires Beach Rd., on Saturdays
and Sundays;
• All Fed-Ex ground drivers in
Durham Region will be accepting
donations to the family.

In Week 2 of RIDE officers set up

Durham College Board of Governors
Notice of vacancies
The Durham College Board of Governors invites nominations
for representatives of the external community to serve as
members of its Board for a three-year term commencing
September 1, 2009.
The role of the Board is to provide Durham College with
community-based governance through impartial stewardship
on behalf of the public, while holding the interests of Durham
College above all particular special interests.
The composition of the Board requires 12 of the 17 members
to be representatives of the college’s external community. The
appointment is for a renewable three-year term. There is no
honorarium for service. It is the aim of the Board of Governors
to maintain full membership of a responsible and effective
Board that is responsive to the changing needs of students, the
college’s strategic direction and the surrounding community.
Governors must be genuinely interested in education, the
well-being of students and energetic and actively committed to
Durham College. Governors are usually expected to serve on
at least one of the standing committees of the Board and may,
from time-to-time, be involved in special projects.
All nominations will be considered before recommendations
are made to the College Compensation and Appointments
Council, the governing body responsible for appointing
governors to college boards on behalf of the Minister of
Training, Colleges and Universities.
It is important that the Board of Governors reflects the vibrant
educational community that it serves. Ensuring gender
balance and ethnic diversity among Board members is an
important priority for the Board of Governors. As well, in
order to ensure an overall balance of skills and experience,
candidates who possess any or all of the following attributes are
strongly encouraged to apply: financial expertise; prior board
experience; and leadership in the private sector, particularly in
the energy field, research or innovative educational/new media
technologies.
All nominations should include the reasons for wishing to
serve on the Durham College Board of Governors. Previous
experience on a volunteer board is an asset and reference to
that experience should also be included.
To be considered for a position on the Board, a detailed resumé
(highlighting relevant qualifications and experience) must be
received at the address below on or before January 15, 2009.
For further information, contact the Office of the Board of
Governors at 905.721.3174.

DURHAM — Trustee salaries
ranged from $17,322 to $11,127 in
2008, slightly less than the previous
year.
Durham Catholic District School
Board trustee salaries each de-
creased about $100 due to enrol-
ment decline, stated a staff report
presented on Nov. 24.
Board policy requires its direc-
tor of education to provide trust-
ees with a notice of their hono-
raria every year by Dec. 1. Salaries
are based on Ontario Regulation
357/06, which includes a base
amount and an enrolment amount
re-calculated annually.
The base amount for board mem-
bers is $5,900, with an extra $5,000
for the chairman and $2,500 for the
vice-chairwoman.
The number of students from the
previous fiscal year determines the
Dec. 1, 2008 to Nov. 30, 2009 enrol-
ment amount.
The Durham Catholic District
School Board’s average daily en-
rolment for 2007/2008 was 23,896
students, while in 2006/2007 it was
24,351. The enrolment amount is
$1.75 per student, split between the
number of board members, with an
additional component added for
the chairman and vice-chairwom-
an. Through the formula, trustees
get $5,227.25 tacked onto their base
amount for enrolment, while the
vice-chairwoman gets $5,824.65
and the chairman, $6,422.05.

Stop treating taxpayers
like children
To the editor:
Clear garbage bags . . . stupidest idea
I’ve heard in a long time.
With a four bag/container limit every
two weeks, it is very, very rare I put out
more than two.
I believe in recycling but I don’t
believe in gestapo tactics to make me
recycle.
If I throw the odd plastic yogurt cup
in the trash, so be it when I’m under my
limit.
If the town wants to encourage people
to recycle more, lower the limit and
force those over the limit to pay extra
but don’t insult the taxpayer by treating
them like a child, just provide the ser-
vice we already pay for.
As for better ideas why not look into
burning trash and creating energy in the
process instead of playing with foolish
ideas like clear bags.

W ith the current success of the
musical Maria, ‘The Sound of
Music’ is still very much a going
concern in the world of entertainment.
I had the opportunity to work with Julie
Andrews once and I was completely smit-
ten the entire time I was on set with her.
I’ve always loved the whole Maria story.
However, I’m a parent of a 14 and 17 year
old now and I can’t help but wonder what
Maria’s song might have been like if she
had sung it during those years when the
bulk of the Von Trapp children were teen-
agers?
Somehow I think it might have been a
little less rosy. One thing is for damn sure,
my kids would never wear clothes that I’d
made out of the curtains. Or would they?
Anyway, I think Julie’s centerpiece tune,
‘My Favourite Things’, might instead sound
something like this . . .
Cornflakes on couches and eating like glut-
tons,
Girlfriends with blouses that show belly
buttons
Coming to breakfast with home-made ear-
rings
These are a few of my least favourite things.
Xbox and video first-person shooters
Prying them off of the Goddam Computers
MSN, Facebook and endless Textings
These are a few of my least favourite things.
Mountains of laundry and dryers over-
loaded
Bedrooms that look like a bomb has
exploded
Attitude, sulkiness, crazy mood swings
These are a few of my least favourite things.
(chorus)
Do your homework, wash your hair please.
Turn that music down.
One day this will all be a humorous joke,
But by then I’ll be six feet down.
Borrowing the car and forgetting to lock it
Stumbling on dope in somebody’s coat
pocket
I need 10 bucks for some new guitar
strings.
These are a few of my least favourite things.
Leaving the milk out so long that you spoil
it
Pee that sprays everywhere but in the toilet
Waiting up for them til late evenings
These are a few of my least favourite things.
Grocery bills like the budget of NATO
I’m lucky if they even leave one potato.
Papa and I starve while they eat like Kings,
These are a few of my least favourite things.
(chorus)
In the bathroom, with the door locked
Preening like a cat
It’s hard to believe but let’s face it, it’s true,
I was once like that.
Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-
writer, saves some of his best lines for his col-
umn. He is currently co-starring in the CBC
hit sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie.
Service demands outpacing funding in 905
Province must distribute
health, social services
funding based on demand
F air is fair, and the Ontario govern-
ment must act to ensure health
care and social services are fund-
ed according to need and population.
As it has maintained for several years
now, the Strong Communities Coalition
released a report this week showing
Ontario’s fastest-growing communi-
ties, including Ajax and Pickering, are
not receiving the funding they require
to support growing populations and
increasing service demands.
The coalition is an alliance of the
United Ways in Durham, York, Peel,
Halton and Oakville, and the Grow-
ing Communities Healthcare Alliance.
It formed to press the government to
address the lack of quick access to a
broad range of health care and social
services in these growing communities,
including the 905 region.
The PricewaterhouseCoopers report
bears the lengthy name, Assessing the
Gap in Provincial Healthcare Funding
between LHINs with High-Growth Pop-
ulations and the Rest of Ontario and
the Gap in Provincial Funding for Social
Services in the GTA/905 and the Rest
of Ontario: a 2008 Update. It indicates
that in 2006/07, social services in the
regions of Durham, Halton, Peel and
York received $642 million less com-
pared to the rest of Ontario.
As for hospital services in the high-
growth communities, representing four
million Ontarians, there’s a $1.404 bil-
lion operating fund discrepancy in local
hospital care funding and a $526-mil-
lion funding gap for community-based
and long-term care services. And, the
problem is getting worse. The total
funding gap in these two areas grew
by $81 million between 2007/08 and
2008/09, according to the report.
The coalition’s recommendations to
the government call for it to set up a
task force to recommend to the premier
how growth in the fast-growing com-
munities can best be supported with
investments not just in infrastructure,
but in hospital and community-based
health care and social services.
Most importantly, it’s calling for fund-
ing to be distributed more fairly, based
on population and need.
Doing so, said Healthcare Alliance
chairwoman Anne McGuire, “will
ensure that limited provincial funds
for social services and health care is
allocated based on the relative needs of
our communities rather than historical
allocations.”
The coalition, using hard data from a
very reputable accounting firm, makes
a case that the Ontario government
cannot refute.
Now the Province must begin acting
to ensure that 905 residents are not
given the short end of the funding stick
compared to other Ontarians.

Bringing life to Pickering
PICKERING — Larry Noonan from the Altona Forest Stewardship Committee proudly stands on
the observation deck of the newly created Altona Forest amphibian pond. Plans started four years
ago to find a location for an additional pond in an attempt to re-establish some of the amphibian
species from the original Altona Forest.
Sixth year
community supper
held in Ajax
By Natalie van Rooy
Special to the News Advertiser
AJAX — Celebrating the
Christmas holiday as a com-
munity is what gives Andrea
Edwards and her family the
greatest joy.
For the past five years, she
has prepared a festive din-
ner in her home for anybody
on their own on Christmas
day.
“The idea came from the
fact that a lot of people are
on their own during Christ-
mas and I hope to give back
to the community through
this dinner,” she said.
It simply started with
reaching out to her neigh-
bours in the Ajax commu-
nity, inspiring her to later
place an advertisement in
the News Advertiser.
“It grew from there,” she
said.
As the day of the dinner
approaches, Ms. Edwards
explained how her family,
consisting of her husband,
Roger, and two daughters,
Cristal and Daisy, have fully
supported her decision
since Day one.
“This is our family dinner;
we put aside the 25th of De-
cember for the community.”
she said.
“This is our Christmas
and what it means to us.”
The traditional meal in-
cludes a wide variety of fes-
tive foods, including turkey,
cranberry sauce, mashed
potatoes, gravy, vegetables
and many desserts.
The number of attendees
varies each year, but for Ms.
Edwards, it’s not about the
numbers: everyone is wel-
come and reaching out to
one person is just as impor-
tant to her as reaching out to
a thousand.
She explains that as a
Christian she believes Jesus
would be reaching out to
others in the community if
he was here on Earth.
For the sixth year hosting
the Christmas dinner, Ms.
Edwards is working in part-
nership with The Salvation
Army for the first time.
“The numbers have in-
creased over the years with
more and more families at-
tending each year,” she said.
The dinner is at the Hope
Community Care Centre,
which will be more accom-
modating if there is a larger
group coming for the meal.
Ms. Edwards knows of The
Salvation Army through her
own volunteer work there
and has also helped out at
the Rouge Valley Ajax and
Pickering hospital for the
past eight years.
While the Edwards’ family
started what has become a
Christmas tradition in Ajax,
Durham residents began
lending a helping hand at
the dinner. Ms. Edwards de-
scribes these volunteers as
“phenomenal,” noting that
many come back year after
year.
The free Christmas din-
ner is on Christmas Day,
Thursday, Dec. 25, from 5 to
8 p.m., with dinner at 5:30
p.m. It’s at the
Hope Community Care Cen-
tre, 35 King’s Cr., Ajax (just
east of Harwood Avenue
and south of the Ajax Town
hall.
Those who wish to attend
must register before Dec.
22 by calling The Salvation
Army at 905-427-7123 or Ms.
Edwards at 905-686-7204.
Durham Region Transit Long Term Transit Strategy
NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT
Durham Region Transit (DRT) has initiated a Long Term Transit Strategy. The study will develop a
comprehensive strategy for advancing rapid transit in Durham within the context of the broader mobility
goals of the Region. This Transit Strategy will consider multi-modal transportation alternatives as
they relate to and impact transit, road networks and goods movement. The strategy will emphasize rapid
transit and its integral place within sustainable transportation options that will help the Region address
anticipated transportation demands to 2031 and beyond to 2056. The Long Term Transit Strategy is
undertaken with financial support from Transport Canada and Province of Ontario.
This notice signals the commencement of the study. A key component of the study will be consultation with
stakeholders, regulatory agencies and the general public. Anyone with an interest in this study has the
opportunity to get involved and provide input. Three rounds of Public Open Houses will be held during the
study to present findings and receive public input. Notices providing the time and location of these meetings
will be published in local newspapers.
The Study Team is inviting the members of the community to participate in the Community Advisory
Committee (CAC). The CAC’s purpose will be to bring forth comments and questions from the
community and to act as a representative of the local community. Committee members will help develop
the transit strategy for the Region.
If you require additional information, be added to the study mailing list, join the Community Advisory
Committee or if you represent an agency, organization, special interest or ratepayers group and would like
to be considered as a representative, please visit www.DurhamLongTermTransitStrategy.ca or e-mail your

Christmas. Hanukkah. Kwanzaa. Winter solstice.
Dong Zhi.
Just about anywhere you live in the world,
“December” means “celebration.”
Whatever the celebration, the common
denominator is food, as celebrants eat, drink and
generally make merry.
Winter-solstice feasts include fruitcakes, roasted
turkey, nuts and seeds, red wine, eggnog and Wassail
(hot mulled cider), many items that have been
incorporated into Christmas festivities.
Kwanzaa (African American), which is also a
commemoration of the first fruits of the harvest,
ends with a grand feast - and gift exchange - on Dec.
31. Typical foods include chicken, sweet potatoes
and squashes, okra and coconut.
In traditional Hanukkah recipes, oil plays a central
role because of the temple miracle. A dinner for the
Jewish holiday might include eggplant fritters, fried
chicken with lemon and cinnamon, deep-fried donuts
and, of course, latkes - potato pancakes.
Many of these foods don’t qualify as low-cal or
health foods. So how does one enjoy the seasonal
traditions and favourite fare without throwing health
to the winds?
The bottom line is balance, experts agree.
“These holidays only happen once a year, so you
don’t want to deny yourself all your favourite things,”
says Melanie Ksienski, a dietitian with the Calgary
Health Region.
“It’s not about self-deprivation,” agrees Mary Sue
Waisman, Nova Scotia-based registered dietitian,
professional cook, cookbook author, and
nutrition consultant with her own business,
All About Food.
“For many people, traditional holiday fare
holds many fond memories,” Waisman says.
“Traditions and rituals bond friends and
family and tell the world ‘this is who we are.’
Enjoy favourite traditional foods guilt-free.
Sample all your favourite foods, but just be
mindful of portion size - it’s not necessary
to eat the entire turkey stuffing, tourtiere or
pumpkin torte.”
That said, there are ways to clip calories
when cooking for the holidays.
For turkey lovers there’s good news.
Roasted turkey is good, low-fat protein,
says Toronto food writer and cookbook
author Madeleine Greey. But it’s the “fixin’s”
that go along with it - the stuffing and gravy
- that are the fat and calorie culprits, she
says. “So go light on those.”
Another of her favourites is potato
pancakes, traditional for Hanukkah
celebrations, which are usually deep fried
like many dishes associated with that
celebration. But, she says, “you can cheat
a little bit and bake it. Use non-stick cooking
spray. It’s still crispy and there’s some fat
but it’s not deep-fried.”
The cranberries that go with the
turkey are full of “powerful, good-for-you
phytochemicals,” says Greey. But the sauce
is usually loaded with sugar. She suggests
substituting half the sugar with fruit to create
a cranberry/apple or cranberry/pear sauce. And
toss in a cinnamon stick - “cinnamon is a powerful
antioxidant.”
Other healthy holiday foods, according to Greey,
include clemantines, sweet potatoes - “one of the
top dogs of the veggie world,” wild rice - “ great
whole grain to serve with holiday meals, and almond
biscotti - “a low-fat, healthy cookie.”
Other ways to cut down the calories, according to
Waisman, include the following:
* when making gravy, skim off as much fat as
possible from the drippings and for added flavour,
use herbs like thyme, savoury and marjoram or
a splash of wine or port;
* for dips or spreads, use the lower-fat versions of
sour cream or cream cheese or try yogurt and
yogurt cheese as alternatives;
* season vegetables with fresh herbs and spices
and lighten up on the butter and cream sauces
- rosemary, thyme and mint pair lusciously with
carrots, nutmeg gives a delightful zing to Brussels
sprouts and green beans, curry gives cauliflower
a fresh taste.
UP TO THE TABLE!
All around the world, in December people are celebrating - eating, drinking and making
merry; but how do you enjoy the best of the holiday fare and keep it healthy too?

Sliding toward 2010 Games
Former Pickering
track star Shelley-Ann
Brown enters third
season on World Cup
bobsled circuit
By Al Rivett
arivett@durhamregion.com
PICKERING — There’s real irony
in Pickering’s Shelley-Ann Brown’s
burgeoning career as a world-class
bobsledder.
You see, the 28-year-old sprinter-
turned bobsleigh brakeman loathes
cold weather. Positively hates it. Yet,
the up-and-comer on the Canadian
national bobsleigh team tolerates it,
and has gone on to thrive in the
milieu -- all for a possible shot at
the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in
Vancouver-Whistler.
“I hate the cold, like, I really hate
it,” she said over the phone from her
hotel room in Winterberg, Germany,
the site of the first World Cup event
of the season, where she competed
in the two-man event with pilot Kail-
lie Humphries of Calgary last Sat-
urday. “I never in a million years
thought I would be doing a winter
sport -- ever. I had dreams of going
to the Olympics but, trust me, it was
always in the summer months.”
Serving as the brakeman with
Humphries, the duo finished sixth
on Saturday aboard Canada 2 in
their inaugural World Cup race at
the western German town with a
two-run time of 1:56.62.
Brown says the expectations for
this year’s World Cup events, her
third season on the circuit, have been
raised, considering last season’s un-
expectedly solid results. The Brown-
Humphries tandem finished fifth
overall in the two-man (only men
race in the four-man events) bobsled
last year. Their fifth-place overall fin-
ish included a bronze medal at the
World Cup event in Lake Placid, N.Y.
last December. Brown also set four
start records in World Cup events
during last season.
This year, Brown said she and
Humphries want to maintain their
hold on fifth or possibly finish higher
this season.
“We like to go fast so, hopefully,
we can continue that trend. We’re
looking for good start times and to
stay in the top five.”
The World Cup competition, she
noted, is fiercest among the Ger-
mans, Americans and Canadians.
The other Canadian sled consists of
veteran pilot Helen Upperton and
brakeman Jenny Ciochetti, who’ve
won World Cup gold in a previous
season.
“The top two German sleds, the
two Canadian sleds and the U.S.
sleds are always in the hunt.”
An all-American track athlete at
the University of Nebraska, Brown
earned bachelor’s degrees in English
and Biological Sciences and then
earned her Master’s in Educational
Psychology. While in Nebraska, she
ran sprints (100 metres) as well as
the 100-metre hurdles, where she
competed against fellow Pickering
athlete, Perdita Felicien, who attend-
ed the University of Illinois at that
time.
She notes becoming involved
in bobsleigh was altogether off her
radar until receiving a phone call.
“I received a phone call from for-
mer Canadian bobsleigh pilot Su-
zanne (Gavine-Hlady) out of the
blue. She wanted me to try it out but,
at the time, I was running track at
college and starting my masters, so I
said ‘no’.
“Two-and-a-half years later I had
finished my masters and finished
working with the track team and,
on that very same day, I received a
phone call from her. I was sort of in
transition. I had a teaching job lined
up in Florida, but it had fell through.
She said, ‘Fine, just try it’. I tried it
and I’ve been on the World Cup ever
since.”
Brown said it wasn’t exactly love
at first sight with bobsleigh. In ad-
dition to the cold, hurtling down an
icy bobsled track aboard a small sled
wasn’t exactly her idea of fun.
“The first couple of rides were very
scary,” she admitted.
And, she also noted she felt some-
what claustrophobic in the sled ini-
tially before becoming more accus-
tomed to the cramped space she
occupies behind the pilot.
“I had a helmet on that was not
my size in a little sled with my head
between my knees. I said initially,
‘This is not for me’. But, you get used
to it. Once I tried it a few times, I grew
to like it.”
She notes competing in bobsleigh
in Whistler in her homeland would
be a dream come true. She does,
however, try to concentrate on her
current season before allowing her
mind to drift to the possibility of the
2010 Winter Olympic Games.
The Olympics “definitely comes
into your mind. We spent three
weeks in Whistler for the team selec-
tion this year and you definitely get
the Olympic vibe. Everyone on the
team is working toward the Olym-
pics. I’m thrilled about it, but not too
much. I’m trying to take it one race
at a time. We want to try to get our-
selves through the next 16 months
until the Games.”
Whether or not she’s Olympic
bound in 2010, Brown’s positive
she’ll retire after that season in the
bobsled.
“No, I would really like to continue
on with life after bobsleigh. I was a
latecomer to bobsleigh and it’s been
a wonderful experience. I thought
international sport was done for me,
so it was nice to have a second wind.
After the Olympics, I want to move
on and have a husband and have
kids and use my degrees.”
Fast facts
The 2008-09 World Cup bob-
sleigh campaign includes a date in
Whistler, B.C., the site of the 2010
Winter Olympics bobsleigh and
skeleton events, from Feb. 1 to 7,
2009.
And, Brown and the other
members of the Canadian bob-
sleigh team are thrilled at the pros-
pect of coming home for a World
Cup event.
“We’re very excited about
that,” said Brown
of her return to
Canada.
The first half
of the World
Cup events will
be in Europe,
with the sec-
ond half of
the campaign
in North
America, in-
cluding stops in Whistler, Park City,
Utah, and culminating in the World
Bobsleigh Championships at her
favourite track at Lake Placid, N.Y.
from Feb. 16 to March 1.
“It’s my favourite track. I think
it’s strange for a brakeman to say
that as most brakemen hate it. For
me, it’s very exciting; it’s not boring.
Some tracks are boring. I really like
the feel of it. It’s very fast, but not
nearly as fast as Whistler.”
•••
Brown noted there’s plenty of
camaraderie among the members
of the Canadian bobsleigh team
while coming on the World Cup
circuit.
“The team is just great. I was
talking about that with some of the
other brakemen and the team is
close and we like each other. We all
like to hang out and go shopping.
We play board games and cards
and just talk.”
•••
Brown has just initiated a blog
‘Push Hard, Run Fast, Have Fun,
Laugh Lots!’ about her travails on
the bobsled tracks of the world.
“I wanted to try to keep friends
and family up to date,” she said.
The bobsledder’s blog can be
accessed at browniebobsleigh.

me, it was always in the summer months.’
