The board installed cameras at seven high schools and into the board offices. The Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras went online this fall and operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They monitor public areas such as hallways, stairwells and the out- side of the school building, said Mr. Robins. Classrooms and pri- vate areas such as washrooms and change rooms are not under sur- veillance. Mr. Robins thinks they’ve been a success so far in terms of improving school safety. “From a school principal’s per- spective, it’s helped in day-to-day operations.” He said they also deter illicit ac- tivity after hours. For example, they can capture vandalism incidents. “It helps to reduce that and as- sists the police in investigations.” At Monday’s Catholic school board meeting, trustees approved the first reading of updated policies and procedures for video surveil- lance systems. Among the issues addressed are who can access the surveillance in the schools (principals and vice- principals only) and the fact that they cannot be used to monitor staff performance. The procedures also say cameras must never monitor areas where students and staff have a higher expectation of privacy, such as change rooms and washrooms, and that the cameras can only be used to monitor safety and detect crimi- nal activity or vandalism. The schools must post notices in the areas where the surveillance is occurring letting staff, students and members of the public know about it. Recorded information will be retained for at least 28 and up to 42 days. Police must submit a written re- quest to the board if they want to view the footage. The Region’s transit commission, which is made up of Regional council members, voted last week to hike the cost of the UPass to $60 from $50 per semester. The fee is much lower than what it would cost stu- dents to purchase monthly passes from DRT because every full-time student is charged for the UPass, whether they use it or not. A monthly student pass on DRT for those who don’t have a UPass is $80. According to DRT, UPass transit ridership to the campus is increasing, with 750,000 to 800,000 rides predicted by the end of the year, not including those that use local GO buses, which are also included in the UPass plan. This will equate to 10 per cent of DRT’s total ridership for 2008. Since its introduction in 2006, the UPass has proven to be a popular way for students to get to school. Even this year, ridership has jumped from about 94,000 UPass rides per month in the spring to 145,000 in Septem- ber. Two routes heading to the campus, the 915 Taunton and the 401 Simcoe, are operat- ing at maximum capacity said Neil Killens, DRT’s deputy manager of support services. The buses run every 15 minutes during peak times, but even then, DRT has to send clean- up buses to accommodate students who simply can’t fit on the bus. “This has been the first time we’ve had the issue of overcrowding on a fixed route service,” said Mr. Killens. As a result, DRT will have to further in- vest in the routes heading to the campus to maintain the existing service. The fee hike, which will bring in roughly $220,000 per year once it’s fully implemented, will cover half the cost. “I think what they (students) can expect is for the existing levels of service to be maintained even with additional ridership growth,” said Mr. Killens. “We’re at a point now where we’ve got maximum loads.” He doesn’t expect the price to be a barrier to students using the service. “I don’t think the rate is going to have an impact on reducing ridership in any way. I think people will continue to perceive it as good value.” Several communities in Canada have UPass agreements with their local univer- sities and the rates for students varies. For example, students at the University of Brit- ish Columbia pay $22 per month, or $88 per semester. McMaster students in Hamilton pay $252 per semester. Even with the hike, UOIT and Durham College students would be paying in the lower range, which includes Guelph University students, who pay $59.35 per semester. Still, students will have to approve the hike and the UPass in general in a referen- dum in January. The original UPass contract is for three years and it’s set to expire. “We’re in the process of ironing out a deal for the UPass and students will decide in January whether or not they will accept the increase,” said campus student association president Amy England. Ms. England said the UPass saves students money and she often hears from students who wish there was more service to the campus. Margaret Greenley, vice-president of stu- dent affairs for UOIT and Durham College, said the existence of the UPass attracts stu- dents to the campus. “What the UPass has done is it has pro- vided a quality, dependable service to our students who are travelling to our campus,” she said, adding that it has made an impact on the ability of the campus to grow. That’s borne out in the ridership figures. Mr, Killens said much of the growth is com- ing from students commuting from Toronto or from Durham’s northern municipalities. Overall, Ms. Greenley said the UPass has exceeded expectations. “I think it’s a phenomenal success.” UOIT, college students face transit hike Walter Passarella/ News Advertiser photo Students leave a Durham Region Transit bus upon arriving at Durham College/UOIT. PICKERING — A taxi driver was attacked and robbed after being lured to an address in Pickering early Saturday. Durham police are seeking three suspects in the attack, which left the driver with several stab wounds. The driver was sent to hospital with non life-threatening injuries and his attackers ran off into the night with cash, police said. The driver was dispatched to an address on Denmar Road in the area of Brock and Kingston roads shortly after midnight but found no one there, police said. The cab- bie told cops that as he was leav- ing he was flagged down by three young men. When the driver rolled down his window the thugs attacked, stab- bing him several times in the torso as he sat helpless in the car, police said. The suspects are described as three black males, believed to be in their mid to late teens. Any- one with information is asked to call police at 905-579-1520, ext. 2565 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 222-8477. AJAX — Two men are being sought for the gunpoint robbery of a taxi driver early Saturday in Ajax. The 48-year-old driver told Durham police he was confronted by two thugs, one armed with a silver handgun, when he showed up at Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School on Mandrake Street just before 1 a.m. The driver wasn’t hurt and the suspects, de- scribed as black men in their late teens or early 20s, fled the scene with cash. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 13, 2008 durhamregion.com Reader opposes more nuclear reactors To the editor: I am very concerned about the pros- pects of more nuclear reactors in Ontar- io. It’s now a time to make some changes to better the future of our children and grandchildren. Nuclear energy is very dangerous, puts tritium in the air and water and leaves us with a very toxic waste that lasts forever. With the cost of a nuclear reactor every home could be subsidized for a solar panel, which would reduce our con- sumption. More windmills are also an option. I remember protesting the construc- tion of Darlington. A lot of good that did. Sherry Brown Ajax I had much to ponder this Remem- brance Day. You probably did too. As always, I want to stop, be silent and give thanks and honour to those who have fallen in the defence of freedom and liberty, who have died in conflict so that others might live in peace. A debt those of us living can never repay. As of late though, and as I age in won- derful peace, Remembrance Day has grown in scope for me. The day, with its silence and introspection and its blan- ket of cold, grey sadness, has become a wakeup call to seize the day and most especially to throw down our arms. Many of us, too many of us, it seems to me, carry weapons through this life. We sling hate and anger over our shoul- ders and carry burdensome packs full of grudges and guilt. Regret and envy cling to our boots in sodden, heavy clumps, making it impossible for us to step lightly and joyfully through this life. I lost a dear, dear friend this week. A loving husband and devoted father and a delightfully funny, wickedly intelligent, courageously spiritual man, he made my life better by his presence in it. I learned of his death through the simple but ago- nizingly final words of his young son. “He’s gone,” were the words he e-mailed to me. “He’s gone.” I thank heaven that I had been able to spend some time with Andrew before his death. Nothing portentous, just hoisting a few beers, talking and laughing, liv- ing. My last memories of him are good ones. Happy moments warmly bathed in friendship and love. Now that he is gone, I will miss him fiercely and fondly, but I will carry no regret. I will not have to stag- ger beneath the weight of a thousand, “Should haves, could haves or might have beens.” Throughout his dance with cancer Andrew was the image of someone throwing down his weapons. Although he had every right to be embittered and angry and rueful he was the embodiment of peace and forgiveness. I am certain that when he died, he held nothing in his hands but love. No malice, no anger, no unspoken wishes. As long as I knew him he was the picture of grace. Thank God for people like this. Thank heaven they come into our lives, however briefly, to remind us, however painfully, that life is short and there is nothing but love. Every- thing else is a waste of precious breath. This Remembrance Day, please spend some time in silence. Give heartfelt thanks to those who have served and sac- rificed. And please, please, please, throw down your arms. Remember to make peace with those you love. Remember to rid yourself of anything that is robbing you of joy or keeping you mired in unhap- piness. Remember to empty your hands of everything but love and forgiveness and then reach out with those hands to whoever comes into your world. Before it’s too late. Before, God forbid, you read the words “He’s gone.” Or before someone else reads them about you. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic- writer, saves some of his best lines for his col- umns. Amid difficult times, a light shines on business success stories I t would be very easy and quite understandable to think the North American economy was going down faster than the Titanic after it hit the iceberg. You’d be forgiven if you believed talk of bailouts and turnarounds was just so much blather about moving the deck chairs around while the unsinkable ship goes under. But there is hope amid all the eco- nomic doom and gloom, and it can be found beyond the descending gas prices and bargains to be found once again in cross-border shopping on a lower Canadian dollar. It can be seen in the success stories found in the bravehearts in our com- munity who take a chance and take a shot with their own ideas. Take, for instance, Brooklin’s Marisa McTasney, who started Moxie Trades, a company that sells a line of workwear just for women. The 33-year-old came up with the idea after being unable to find work boots designed exclusively for women when she went shopping for construc- tion gear. Seeing a need and discovering that 25 per cent of construction workers were female, she went after that market and has become so successful she was able to turn down an offer of $600,000 for 75 per cent of her company on the CBC hit show ‘Dragon’s Den’. She did make a private deal with one of the Dragons and will launch her line of Moxie Xtreme workboots in Mark’s Work Wearhouse in March. Or what about Darryl Koster of Buster Rhino’s, a restaurant owner who spe- cializes in spicy sauces for his spare ribs? The Whitby resident, another ‘Drag- on’s Den’ entrant, has made a success of his tasty treats. There is also Jo-Ann Baguioro- Thompson, who came up with the idea for her own business while walking her dog. That day the Whitby resident, who then lived in California and made her own homemade puppy treats, noticed other canines coming up and wanting to chow down on her Scooby snacks. So a new business was born and Ms. Baguioro-Thompson now mass-pro- duces her own puppy treats. The point is that, even in a down cycle, there is opportunity out there. With enough determination, inspira- tion and a good idea, you can succeed. These stories prove it. Take time to remember and let go of all that holds you back Neil Crone/ Enter Laughing Open is In was written by Audiologist Lila O’Neill, founder of the fi rst Audiology Clinics to dispense hearing aids in Durham Region. Q. How much damage should I have before getting a hearing aid? A. The degree of hearing loss depends on the number of hair cells that are damaged. If a signifi cant number of hair cells are damaged, a person will experience a signifi cant hearing loss. A hearing loss can be fairly equal across the frequency range or can occur only at certain frequencies, example, a high frequency hearing loss. Q. Are you grinning and nodding, but not sure why? Are you getting ‘the look’ --- of irritation on your spouse’s face after your trademark ‘What?’ Do you misunderstand what’s being said? A. Those are signs of a hearing loss. See an Audiologist for a thorough hearing test. If you were told that hearing aids cannot help, call us today for a no cost/no obligation hearing aid demonstration. Pickering (905-831-8311), Ajax (905-426-4000), or Whitby (905-666-7726) Written by Audiologist, Lila O’Neill, founder of the fi rst Audiology Clinics to dispense hearing aids in Durham Region: Ajax Pickering Audiology Clinic, Bayly Audiology Services, Whitby Hearing Centre. Q. What is nerve deafness?? A. Nerve deafness or better known as “sensorineural hearing loss” typically occurs when part of the inner ear, the hair cells, are damaged or destroyed. The term ‘sensorineural hearing loss’ is a more accurate term than ‘nerve deafness’ since the hearing nerve trunk is rarely damaged. Instead, damage most often occurs in the hair cells located in the cochlea. When hair cells are damaged, they are unable to send information to the hearing nerve and the person experiences hearing loss. We encourage total health and ensure our clients get all the essential nutrients necessary to make weight loss easy.” Clients begin by taking part in a free health analysis. “We sit down and discuss their health goals, whether that’s losing weight or just maintaining a healthy life- style. Our program encourages people to achieve their own personal health goals. Regardless of whether or not they decide to pursue those goals with the U Weight Loss Program, everyone receives a free detox and cleanse. “It is a very mild cleanse that can be used in conjunction with their current diet, and after they have started we will follow up with them to see how they are doing.” Our main goal is to change people’s lives and make losing weight easy by edu- cating our clients and clearing up the many nutrition myths that interfere with them meeting their goal and maintaining their weight loss permanently.” Through its employees, U Weight Loss also offers up personal experiences and successes. Answer: Cravings are our body’s way of talking to us. When we eat foods that are defi cient in nutrients, such as fast, processed, refi ned, microwave or fried foods, our bodies do not have the materials, aka “nutrients”, they need to build cells correctly and run optimally. Therefore, our bodies, being as smart as they are, send out a “craving” to get us to eat more food! The key is to provide our bodies with whole foods that are nutrient dense, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, emphasizing low-glycemic carbohydrates, essential fats and lean proteins in the right ratios. Eating the correct balance of fats, proteins and carbohydrates is what we at U Weight Loss call eating in “hormonal balance”. This reduces cravings, fuels our bodies for optimal vitality and energy, helps prevent disease and makes weight loss safe and easy! Optimal health is the most important thing at U Weight Loss and can only be achieved through BALANCE - this is what we teach our clients at the clinics! durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 8 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 13, 2008 Need a little lift?Need a little lift?Need a little lift? But according to Regional Public Works director Cliff Curtis, the move by the Province only serves to get waste levels to the point where the size of the proposed incinerator will work best. An Oct. 16 letter from Environment Minister John Gerretsen to “Waste Management Stakehold- ers” touts “a new vision for waste management in Ontario that strives for zero waste, an . . . approach that encourages businesses to be innovative and improve their bottom lines by designing products and processes that generate little or no waste.” The letter also speaks of a discussion paper now open for public comment and a plan for full-day consultation sessions for stakeholders across On- tario, as the Act moves through its review. That should have Durham reconsidering whether it’s a good idea to build an incinerator, said Newcastle resident Wendy Bracken. “They went in with a set of assumptions and one was that Zero Waste wasn’t a viable strategy,” she said. “The playing field has really changed now.” Incineration should only be considered a “last resort,” used only after the Region has gone “as far as you possibly can towards this Zero Waste goal before you go to disposal options which negatively impact our environment and health,” Ms. Bracken said. “A premature leap to incineration, without first implementing and exploring all Zero Waste op- tions and allowing new initiatives to take shape is financially, socially and environmentally irre- sponsible and puts the public health at undue risk,” she said. “Zero Waste will take a long time and there will be a need for an interim solution,” Ms. Bracken said. “The incinerator should not be the interim solution, because it competes with Zero Waste.” But that’s not entirely how Mr. Curtis sees it. A provincial move toward extended producer re- sponsibility for the waste they produce is welcome but doesn’t negate the need for the incinerator, he said. Just to make the proposed incinerator at the size Durham is considering, work properly, an awful lot of waste must be diverted. “We have to get to 70 per cent diversion fairly soon after the incinerator is up and running,” Mr. Curtis said. Even in Europe, where extended producer re- sponsibility and reduced packaging has been in vogue for some time, incinerators are working efficiently, he said. Durham’s proposed incinerator is to be built, if approved, to handle about 140,000 tonnes of waste per year. That size accounts for aggressive diversion. “My worst nightmare is that we’ve sized it too small,” Mr. Curtis said. Paid-for items never shipped: police DURHAM — A man accused of bilking several Durham residents in fraudulent Internet trans- actions has been charged with fraud. Durham police investigated several reports from residents who said they’d paid online for items such as iPods and Play Station platforms, but never received the products. Police believe there may be more victims who haven’t yet re- ported their losses. It’s believed the suspect, who advertised items for sale on sites such as KIJIJI, Craig’s List and eBay, may have taken in more than $20,000 by defrauding unwitting victims in Durham and elsewhere. Durham cops executed a search warrant at a Wasaga Beach residence Tuesday and seized a computer and numerous documents, including evidence of alias names and fraudulent e-mail addresses. It’s believed the accused man may have used aliases Chris Davis and Ron Meyers, and e-mail accounts such as Generator4Sale. He has indicated he resides in North Bay, Bramp- ton and at other addresses. Christopher Dwyer, 24, of Pinecrest Avenue in Wasaga Beach is charged with fraud over $5,000. An investigation continues. Anyone who be- lieves they may have had contact with the sus- pect is asked to call police at 905-579-1520, ext. 5364 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Leaside foursome captures competitive title at big event By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — Annandale Curling Club youth teams finished second and third at the club’s annual Youth Bon- spiel on Saturday. Twenty-eight teams participated in the competitive draw (age 20 and under this year) at the annual ’spiel that drew several out-of-town teams. In fact, a foursome from the Lea- side Curling Club, skipped by Kevin Hawkshaw, claimed top spot overall. Annandale took the next two top spots. The team of Ben Bevan, Chris Avery, Jake McGhee and Carter Adair came second. They were followed by the team of Michael Bryson, James MacPherson, Sandy Martin and Josh Hall, which finished third. The non-competitive draw for curlers 16 years and under went to out-of-club teams. Leaside’s Tyler Van Huyse rink finished first, followed by Russell Matthews from Whitby in second and Michael Harris from Bayview in third. All teams played two eight-end games; they also received lunch, snacks and a prize for all players. Annandale rinks sweep up second, third at 28-team Youth Bonspiel Pickering Panthers earn split with Muskies By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — The Pickering Panthers should be like a fish out of water against the division-leading Lindsay Muskies this season. But, for some odd reason, when the top meets the bottom of the On- tario Junior Hockey League’s Rud- dock Division this season, more often than not, it’s been the Panthers who’ve dined out on fish. Last weekend, the Panthers and Muskies played to a stalemate, win- ning on each other’s ice in OHA On- tario Junior Hockey League action. The Panthers (4-13, with two overtime wins) travelled to the Lind- say Community Centre on Friday and returned with a well-earned 4-3 victory over the Muskies (15-5, with a shootout win and overtime loss), which are 21 points ahead of Pickering in the standings. On Sunday, how- ever, Lindsay claimed its first regular-season victory over Pickering in four tries, win- ning 5-1 at the Pickering Rec- reation Com- plex. For Panthers’ head coach Bill Brady, any time the Panthers can take a win against the first-place Muskies, it’s a good weekend. “If you’d of asked me, going in, if we’d be happy with a split, we would have been happy with that,” said Brady. Friday’s win represented another breakout game for the Panthers’ offensive tandem of Kyle Ramsay, Tyler von Engelbrechten and Greg Riggs, who’ve been on fire of late. The unit combined for eight points, including a two-goal night for Ram- say, whose second marker on the power play stood up as the game winner. Veteran Riggs scored a goal and added two assists, while von En- gelbrechten recorded three assists. In four games since joining the Panthers after a trade with the Peter- borough Liftlock Stars, Ramsay has scored three goals and added three assists. The big forward line, however, was kept in relative check in Sunday’s 5-1 Greg Riggs ✦ See Panthers, Page 18 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 13, 2008 PAGE 13 Pdurhamregion.com SpotlightSpotlight on Businesson Business ADVERTISING FEATURE INTERIOR CONTRACTING Finished Basements • In-law Apartments • Home Offices Complete Interior Improvements 416.801.2945FREE ESTIMATES FREE ESTIMATES Relax. Trailing the St. Mary Mon- archs 9-0 at the half of the Lake Ontario Secondary School Ath- letics (LOSSA) semifinal, the Ti- tans stayed on the ground for the second half and churned out a 13-9 victory to advance to the championship game at Oshawa’s Civic Fields this Saturday, Nov. 15. The Titans took the ball to start the second half and drove the length of the field, recording a touchdown on a Jermaine Felix quarterback sneak from less than a yard out. The winning score came with 6:01 remaining in the fourth quarter when Kema Nnawuchi ran a reverse in from 28 yards out to put the Holy Trinity Titans in the lead for the first time in the game at 13-9. A two-point con- vert failed. The Mon- archs made things inter- esting late in the game, driving down inside Titans’ territory with less than a minute to play, but turned the ball over on downs when they failed to convert on a third and long. After the slow start to the game, the Titans were able to regroup at halftime, quickly cut- ting into the nine point deficit. “In the first half we made a couple of big mistakes and we were getting down on ourselves,” said coach Fred Zinkie. “I said to the guys at half time that we get first ball and let’s put that ball in the end zone and we did and that swung everything.” Both playoff games for the Ti- tans have been close ones after slipping past Paul Dwyer 10-7 in the quarterfinals. The loss was a disappointing one for the Monarchs, who ad- vanced to the semis after blank- ing Dunbarton 8-0 in last week’s quarterfinals. “Our defence has kept us in all year and on offence they make little mistakes that cause our quarterback (Alex O’Donnell) to not have enough time. (The Titans) have pretty good athletic ability so they catch up on you and make plays,” said St. Mary head coach Enzo Antonucci fol- lowing the game. The Monarchs opened the scoring early in the first quarter when Titans’ quarterback Jer- maine Felix conceded a safety. Minutes later, Kris Robertson ran back a long punt return for a touchdown, giving the Monarchs a 9-0 advantage. Saturday’s LOSSA champi- onship game will feature Holy Trinity against Donald A. Wil- son, who advanced with a 22-19 upset over Pickering on Wednes- day afternoon. Only Riggs scored for Pickering on the power play. Brady noted Sunday’s loss was another in a long line where the Panthers couldn’t connect on scor- ing chances. And, they had plenty, finishing with 40 shots on goal, com- pared to Lindsay’s 43. “I just think we were snakebit,” said Brady of the Panthers’ inability to bury their chances. “We had op- portunities, especially near the end of the second period. von Engelbre- chten has an open net on a one- timer, but he breaks his stick. We put ourselves in a good position to score, but it just didn’t happen.” The Panthers begin a three- games-in-three-nights string, start- ing Friday at the complex against the Kingston Voyageurs. They’re in Toronto against the Dixie Beehives on Saturday and, on Sunday, the Panthers are in Trenton against the Hercs at 2 p.m. ✦ Panthers from page 12 Printers pound Press in men’s hoops action AJAX — Dickson Printing came out strong against North Al- liance Press, dominating from the tip-off, to post a 46-30 win in Ajax Men’s Basketball League play last Wednesday. Stephen Johnston was the top scorer for Dickson Printing, knocking down 15 points, followed by Nick Sideris with eight. Big man Don McEachern led NAP with eight points and Gregg McGuire with seven. Phillips, Hager & North fought a see-saw battle with Michael’s Eatery, finally besting the diners 58-54. The game featured scoring from all players. PH & N had outstanding games from Bill Manos with 17 points, Ryan Quinlan with 15 points and Clayton Gall with 13. Michael’s Eatery received a similar effort from Phil Guthrie with 17 points, Calvin Smith with 14 and Antonio Krupl with 10. ESN Packaging continued to roll over the competition, beating Top Shelf 55-36. ESN had good production from David Jackson with 13 points, while Cliff Fernandez and Pat Roach added 10 apiece. Claude Whitfield paced Top Shelf with a 15-point night. Mike Gordensky added 12. Up-to-date statistics can be found on the league’s blog, ajax- mensbasketball.blogspot.com.
