AJAX — Police are searching for
three men who stormed an Ajax
apartment Thursday evening, as-
saulting a resident and robbing
him.
The 22-year-old victim wound
up locked on the balcony of his
Exeter Road apartment until pass-
ersby heard his calls for help, said
Durham police Sergeant Paul Mc-
Curbin. He said the victim recog-
nized at least one of the three as-
sailants. “Investigators are close to
possibly identifying the three indi-
viduals responsible for the robbery
and are continuing the investiga-
tion,” he said Friday morning.
The incident began around 9
p.m. when the victim heard a knock
on his door and saw an acquain-
tance, identified as a 21-year-old
Ajax man, outside. The victim was
locked outside on his balcony while
his apartment was searched. The
suspects left with his wallet, a cell-
phone and cash, leaving him on the
balcony. Passersby heard the man’s
calls for help and alerted the build-
ing superintendant, who called po-
lice and let the victim back inside.
He sustained a cut to his face and
other minor injuries.

DURHAM — The Lord’s Prayer
and its place in Regional council
chambers has become a conten-
tious issue since Secular Ontar-
io asked councillors earlier this
month to ban the prayer said be-
fore council meetings.
“I don’t know where it is going
to end up but, I know it is going
to create a fair amount of discus-
sion,” Regional Chairman Roger
Anderson said.
Mr. Anderson said he has re-
ceived a number of calls about the
Lord’s Prayer, and the callers are
99 per cent in favour of leaving the
prayer alone.
“There are things to be said
about tradition, there are things to
be said about policy and there are
certainly things to be said about
diversity and the diverse munici-
pality we live in,” Mr. Anderson
said. “There are ways of dealing
with it that can include the Lord’s
Prayer and I guess there are ways
you can deal with it without in-
cluding it.”
Either way, Mr. Anderson said
this is a good opportunity for
council to look at its process and
procedure.
A letter from Secular Ontario
sparked debate over the prayer,
said before every Regional Council
meeting begins. The organization
contends council prayers have
been illegal since an Ontario Court
of Appeal ruling against them in
1999.
Henry Beissel, president of Sec-
ular Ontario, said in a telephone
interview from his Ottawa home
that the organization has stirred
up quite a bee’s nest by sending
the letter out to 18 municipalities
across Ontario.
He said a second round of let-
ters will be sent out to municipali-
ties, “simply pointing out to them
that they are breaking the law.”
Secular Ontario is a non-profit
corporation formed in 2006. Mr.
Beissel said it’s objective is to en-

Healthy snacks
proposed by Food Sense
DURHAM — Food Sense vending
wants to bring healthy snacks into Dur-
ham’s elementary schools.
Maggie Cavalier, of Oshawa’s Food
Sense Vending Machine Services, re-
cently made her case for healthy snacks
in Durham schools during the public
board’s standing committee meeting.
“Obesity and health issues are not
cured by fitness alone,” said Ms. Cava-
lier. “Healthy options is an issue that
needs to be addressed, especially in
Durham.”
Although she wants to get the Food
Sense machines into Durham’s ele-
mentary schools, she added healthy
vending is not available in most high
schools. Vending machines require no
maintenance or cost to the school and
allows them to make money, said Ms.
Cavalier. The income provided would
be a good way to purchase books or
other things for the school, she said.
Ms. Cavalier left a Food Sense infor-
mation package for the committee to
review.

sure different religions can live in har-
mony.
“It certainly is offensive and a vi-
olation to privilege one religion over
another,” Mr. Beissel said. “We would
support a moment of silence for people
to gather their thoughts and let their
thoughts go to where they want them
to.”
So far Secular Ontario has received
two letters back from municipalities.
Middlesex, Mr. Beissel said, decided
to discontinue the prayer while Owen
Sound merely thanked Secular Ontario
for its letter.
A letter was also sent to the Province,
asking that it enforce the no-prayer rul-
ing, and Mr. Beissel said he was sur-
prised to read what Minister of Munici-
pal Affairs and Housing John Gerretsen
wrote back.
“He is hiding behind what he calls
his respect for the autonomy of local
councils,” Mr. Beissel said. “It is a typical
politician response.”
He said it is surprising to read through
various media that so many councils
have decided to keep the prayer. He
said when a council is willing to break
the law it sets a bad example for its resi-
dents.
Currently Clarington begins it’s meet-
ing with a non-denominational prayer,
as does Pickering. Oshawa begins its
meetings with the Lord’s Prayer. Ajax
and Uxbridge have no prayer while Scu-
gog also says no prayer but has a mo-
ment of silence. Whitby is reviewing
different prayers.
Durham Regional Council sent the
issue to its finance and administration
committee to be reviewed on Jan. 17. It
will likely be back before council on Jan.
24. “I think it will be an interesting dis-
cussion at finance on Wednesday (the
meeting starts at 9:30 a.m.) and it will
be an interesting discussion at council,”
Mr. Anderson said. “I don’t know if any
clergy or any other residents are attend-
ing finance next week but they just have
to call and ask to appear and they are
more than welcome to appear.”

Break-in
suspects busted
by of f icers
AJAX — Three teenagers were busted
after police responded to a daytime break-
in Thursday afternoon in Ajax.
A homeowner called Durham police from
the upper floor of his house after hearing the
glass breaking and items being removed.
The thieves bolted when they realized
someone was home, police said.
Officers stopped three youths and found
them to be in possession of stolen property.
It’s believed they may be responsible for a
series of break-ins in Ajax, police said.

DURHAM — A sentencing hearing has
begun for an Ajax man who was brought to
the attention of police here after U.S. author-
ities busted a child pornography operation
south of the border.
Christopher James Brookfield was arrest-
ed in late 2004 after a Durham police detec-
tive traced Internet transactions made on
his credit card, an Ontario Court judge was
told Friday.
Mr. Brookfield pleaded guilty to a single
count of possessing child pornography.
Reading from an agreed statement of facts,
prosecutor Brenda Green said an investiga-
tion began after police in the U.S. busted a
child porn distribution ring in an operation
dubbed Project Falcon.
Police in Durham traced 10 purchases of
child porn to a credit card belonging to Mr.
Brookfield and in December 2004 executed
a search warrant at his Dreyer Drive house,
seizing computers and related equipment
and three hard copies of photos of young
girls.
A search of seized computer drives re-
vealed more photos and records of visits to
child porn websites, Ms. Green said. That
forensic analysis also detected software de-
signed to erase files from computer hard
drives, she said.
“Six hours prior to the search warrant
being executed that software was utilized,”
Ms. Green said.
Upon his arrest Mr. Brookfield co-operat-
ed with police, showing them websites he’d
visited on his laptop computer, Ms. Green
said.
“He denied he viewed child pornography
on the websites,” Ms. Green said.
“He further stated he did not consider the
pictures the officers found child pornogra-
phy.”
Mr. Brookfield is free on bail as he awaits
sentencing.

SOMERVILLESIMCOEBuilding at Kingston
and Fairport expected
to be ‘benchmark
for future developments’
By Danielle Milley
dmilley@durhamregion.com
PICKERING — The City’s latest higher-density
proposal is getting top marks from council for meet-
ing its sustainability principles.
The 10-storey mixed-use building proposed for
the southwest corner of Kingston and Fairport roads
received approval at Monday’s executive committee
meeting. It will come to council Jan. 15 for final ap-
proval.
Several councillors commented on the sustainable
aspects of the design. The proposal by 786 Indopak
Inc. calls for 198 units, 3,465 square metres of com-
mercial space, and live/work units. The applicant is
also pursuing several green building design elements
including a green roof, solar collectors and energy-
saving glazing.
“I was really excited to see the plan. I thought
the design was quite innovative,” said Ward 1 City
Councillor Jennifer O’Connell. “I anticipate this type
of development will be a benchmark for future devel-
opment in Pickering.”
The subject property, located across from St.
Paul’s-on-the-Hill Anglican Church, is currently va-
cant. In order for the proposal to be approved, the
maximum allowable density on the property needed
to be increased to 260 units per hectare.
Planning staff felt the increase should be allowed
on the property because of its somewhat isolated
nature (with the closest residential area being behind
the church and the newly constructed car dealer-
ships on the north side of Kingston Road). As well,
it is on a major road, so the intensification helps
support transit. The intensification of the property
also goes along with the provincial policy plan for
infill development through Places to Grow. There
were a few residents at the meeting who had some
problems with the proposal.
Sylvia Spencer expressed concerns about the
height of the building (she would like to see a limit of
seven storeys), due to the shadow it would cast on St.
Paul’s and the day care at St. Paul’s, and the safety of
children in the area. She also thought there could be
more interest for a commercial development on that
site. “I would like to see an increase in the commer-
cial component so it can benefit the City’s coffers,”
she said. Five people spoke at the statutory public
meeting held on the application, but only Ms. Spen-
cer and Catherine Bare spoke at the executive com-
mittee meeting. Mayor Dave Ryan was supportive of
the application. He went on to say the site – bordered
by Hwy. 401, Kingston Road and TRCA lands – is a
difficult one to develop and the plan has taken many
months to complete, but was worth it as it will be a
positive development in the City of Pickering.
“This is the first step in the redevelopment of the
central corridor leading into downtown Pickering,”
Mayor Ryan said.
The approval did come with an “H” holding provi-
sion that means several requirements have to be met
before it can be lifted and development can occur.
Some of those requirements include design of some
units to meet accessibility requirements, design the
development for three-stream refuse handling, and
that the building and site design achieve LEED de-
sign standards.

EDITORIAL
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
TV ad does disservice to women, cops
To the editor:
The purpose of my letter is to offer feedback concerning the
television ad currently airing regarding a stereotypical blonde
dressed up as a policewoman and engaging in inappropriate
behaviour in her uniform.
Surely, the company must have considered the lack of respect
it conveys regarding the position of a law enforcement officer,
not to mention the degradation of women as police officers.
The intention of using humour in ads does not include send-
ing messages of incompetence and misuse of power or job
ethics. If this had been a role reversal with a male police officer
conducting himself in such a manner, this would not have made
it to air.
The not-so-subtle visual message that a young blonde police
officer is fooling around on official time, involved in inappro-
priate sexual activity is being aired during a national family
pastime -- hockey -- when children are watching. What kind
of message do you think they are receiving? That only male of-
ficers are seriously taking the bad guys off the street? That young
blonde women who are even in a position requiring respect,
fool around sexually anywhere, anytime?
Why can’t women be attractive and smart and witty and posi-
tively portray power?

S hould an attachment identifying fu-
ture growth areas be tacked on to the
Region Official Plan?
That’s still up for debate, but the green-
belt and conforming to the Province’s Plac-
es to Grow Act is quite possibly the most
complicated and significant item council
will deal with this term.
Sitting at the Jan. 9 meeting of planning
committee I began to wonder how well
equipped some councillors are to deal with
this contentious issue.
In attendance was Oshawa Mayor John
Gray, who chairs the committee, Pickering
Mayor Dave Ryan, councillors Jim McMil-
len and Joe Drumm, all experienced re-
gional councillors who surely have a handle
on what is going on. Also there was Brock
Councillor John Grant and Uxbridge Mayor
Bob Shepherd, both new to committee.
Then there was Councillor Mary Novak,
who declared a conflict (because of fam-
ily-owned lands close to the greenbelt) and
didn’t participate. My question to Coun.
Novak would be, why accept a position on
planning committee if you are unable to
comment on arguably the most important
issue this committee will deal with over the
next four years?
Also in attendance was Chairman Roger
Anderson. Love or hate his approach to this
issue, he has obviously kept close tabs on
it. As has Mayor Steve Parish of Ajax, who
isn’t on planning but attended the meet-
ing, as did Ajax Councillor Colleen Jor-
dan, Pickering Councillor Bonnie Littley,
Whitby Councillor Don Mitchell, Uxbridge
Councillor Howie Herrema, and Clarington
Mayor Jim Abernethy. All of whom, with
the exception of Coun. Jordan, are regional
rookies. I applaud them for attending, as
they should, being so new to such an im-
portant issue (even though Coun. Herrema
left before the meeting ended).
Mayor Abernethy, on the other hand,
made a speech, asking committee to con-
sider if it was fulfilling its mandate. Upon
finishing, he left the meeting. It’s a move I
question since just this week I was told by
Clarington staff the mayor likely wouldn’t
be able to comment on the impact imple-
menting the Growth Plan would have on
Clarington since he was new to council and
not too familiar with the issue. One would
think based on that he would have chosen
to stay past 11:30 a.m.
Planning is extremely complicated and
issues like growth management and green
space impact every constituent in Durham.
So, when it comes to these issues I think it is
imperative every councillor do their best to
understand and contribute to the debate.
We’ll see what happens with this issue at
Regional Council on Jan. 24.

Get into the Cash
for Cancer Lottery
Where can you contribute your money, have an excel-
lent chance to win a fabulous prize and play a central
role providing much-needed help to those who are
suffering from a dreaded disease?
Why, with the Cash for Cancer Lottery, now in its eighth
year. The lottery, administered by Oshawa Hospital Foundation
workhorse Jim Szeman, has been a boon for the nearly finished
R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre. The centre,
which has been rapidly rising at the Lakeridge Health Oshawa
site and will fully open this spring, has received some $15 mil-
lion over the years from the lottery which helps offset the $39
million local portion of the total expense of constructing the
complex edifice.
The current draw along with those in years to come will help
fund the cost of new equipment and other needs the centre will
require. The lottery offers a lot for the price of a $100 single ticket
or packet of three tickets for $250. First, there are a limit of 87,500
tickets printed each year, making the odds of winning some
kind of prize an extremely high 1 in 7.
There are a staggering 12,521 prizes in total including seven
super early bird and 14 early bird prizes. There are also 16 grand
prizes including the top prize of $1 million tax-free. In total,
$4,428,455.65 in prize values will be given out.
Consider one of the prizes you could go home with: there is
a trip for two to Hollywood complete with $100,000 in spending
money, a number of vehicles, hot tubs, barbecues, pool tables, a
kitchen renovation, a big screen TV and home theatre, a $10,000
shopping spree, two $50,000 prizes and more. There are Carib-
bean vacations, free gas for a year and plenty of car giveaways
in the early bird and super early bird draws as well as three
$100,000 prizes and four $10,000 prizes. In other words, this
draw is jam-packed with winners.
But there isn’t a lot of time to go before the early bird draws
begin. The first draw goes Feb. 7. To purchase a ticket, go to
cashforcancer.com and follow the instructions or call 1-877-
460-3800 any time, day or night, or visit the ticket kiosks in the
Oshawa Centre or the Lakeridge Health Oshawa site.
When you buy a ticket, everybody wins.

OPSEU takes
Province
to court on
courthouse
Waiving environmental
assessment endangers
workers, warns president
By Lesley Bovie
lbovie@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — Union boss Leah Cas-
selman is backing workers who com-
plain the waiving of an environmental
assessment (EA) for the new regional
courthouse in Oshawa is putting their
health at risk.
But Oshawa Mayor John Gray, who
downplays safety concerns from mem-
bers of the Ontario Public Service Em-
ployees Union (OPSEU), says the issue
is really about the lack of free parking
at the Bond and Mary streets site.
“They’re refighting the same old
fight. They don’t want to go to down-
town Oshawa and pay for parking,” he
said in an interview.
“It’s easy to hide behind an environ-
mental bogeyman but more impor-
tantly, their first concern should be
getting a first-class court facility that
meets the needs of today and tomor-
row.” The Ministry of Public Infrastruc-
ture Renewal (PIR), which will lease
the proposed site from the City, is ask-
ing the Environmental Assessment Act
be waived due to time constraints. The
Act requires any project dealing with
real estate activities complete a Class
EA, a process usually taking four to six
months. The PIR argues meeting those
requirements could delay the con-
struction of the regional courthouse,
as the quote to construct it expires next
month, before all approvals could be
granted.
Ministry of Environment officials say
the City will still have to meet strict
environmental regulations as it cleans
up the former industrial site.
However, in this week’s letter to the
ministry and Attorney General, Ms.
Casselman charged the Province with
“c ourting disaster” by waiving the ER.
“This is a serious issue fraught with
risk not only for these workers but
also for the government,” the OPSEU
president said. “To rush ahead without
the proper EA is to put this entire proj-
ect in jeopardy.” OPSEU, which repre-
sents 170 regional courthouse workers,
acknowledges there have been issues
around the parking at the proposed
site. But spokesman David Cox said
there are “legitimate” concerns the
lands, once part of the General Motors
north plant, are saturated with trichlo-
roethylene, a cleaning solvent used to
degrease metal parts.
“We’re worried about the effects of it
on skin and breathing,” he said, adding
members have been told there is an
Olympic-sized pool of the solvent sit-
ting in the site’s groundwater.
But after a meeting this week be-
tween court workers and project man-
agers, members were given assurances
there will be ongoing monitoring of
air quality at the courthouse once it’s
built, Mr. Cox said.

Barnes is one of only seven
other swimmers from Ontario to
make the trip to Hawaii.
A student at Dunbarton High
School, Barnes will compete in
the 200-metre breaststroke, put-
ting together an outstanding
qualifying swim at the recent Pan
Pacific trials in Montreal.
There, she was half a body
length behind at the 100-metre
mark, but managed to pull ahead
in the last four metres of the
race.
Canadian team coach Peter
Carpenter, of Pointe-Claire, Que-
bec, says the Hawaiian competi-

“For many on our team, this is
their first national team and their
first experience being away from
home,” said Carpenter in a press
release.
“This is a great opportunity
to race the best 18-and-under

goal is that they go in and beat
the time that got them here. And
we’re asking them to swim fast
at an unusual time of the year in

them and we’re anxious to see
how they react to it.”

gold at the Quebec Ringette Chal-
lenge Cup last weekend.
Alyssa Jasper and Kristin John-
ston from Ajax and Jodie Han-
nen and Christine Langford from
Pickering all played strong roles in
helping the Ontarians beat Quebec
7-5 in a hard-fought final game. All
told, the Jasper-Johnston-Hannen
forward line accounted for three
of the seven Ontario goals. Lang-
ford contributed all-round solid
defensive play in the gold-medal
victory.
The Team Ontario ‘AAA’ squad,
which consisted of 15- to 18-year-
old players, won all of its round-
robin games against other provin-
cial teams, save its tournament
opener, as Team Ontario played to
a 5-5 draw with Quebec. Ontario
posted wins of Prince Edward Is-
land (8-1), B.C. (7-1) and Nova
Scotia (7-0) to finish in a first-place
tie with Manitoba with nine points
apiece. Ontario, however, received
first place in the tie-breaker with
21 goals scored, compared to
Manitoba’s 17.
In the cross-over contest against
PEI, the Ontarians posted an em-
phatic 7-0 victory to advance to
the gold-medal game.
Te am Ontario has now won two
golds, a silver and a bronze across
Canada on their way to the Cana-
dian Winter Games in Whitehorse,
Yukon in February, where its con-
sidered a contender for gold.

PICKERING — The Pickering
Panthers bantam ‘AA’ rep hockey
team returned from its European
playing tour as champions of a com-
petitive international event.
Playing at the Czech Republic In-
ternational Ice Hockey Tournament
in Brno, Czech Republic, the Pan-
thers held off a hard-charging HK
Ruzinov Bratislav
squad of Slovakia
to capture the gold
medal with a solid
3-2 victory.
The annual
playing tour of Europe took this
year’s Pickering ‘AA’ bantam team
to the Czech Republic, Germany
and Austria for hockey and sightsee-
ing. In addition to the tournament,
the Panthers also played exhibition
games against club teams in those
three countries during their nine-
day stay between Dec. 26 and Jan.
7.
In the gold-medal game, the Pan-
thers led 3-0 with 40 seconds re-
maining in the second period when
Slovakia scored a short-handed goal
to trail the Panthers by two goals
entering the third period.
Momentum shifted in the third,
however, when Bratislav scored their
second goal to trail the Panthers
by one when Pickering’s aggressive
physical play led them to penalty
trouble with the local European ref-
erees. With only minutes left in the
game, HK Ruzinov Bratislav pulled
its goalie in favour of an extra at-
tacker, but failed to capitalize on a
6-on-4 power-play opportunity.
In the closing ceremonies, Cor-
rado Gianfriddo was named Picker-
ing’s most valuable player; Connor
Maxim was awarded the tourna-
ment’s most outstanding goalten-
der.
Zack Munn, Jordan Bean and Jay
Boychuck scored for Pickering in
the final; Gianfriddo and Blake Fra-
ser drew assists.
Pickering advanced to the gold-
medal game after a solid 3-1 win
over Prague. Cody Harding led the
way with two goals and an assist;
Tommy Reid had the other goal.
Gianfriddo chipped in with an as-
sist.
The Panthers started the tourney
with a 3-1 win over HCM Slovan
Rosice. Goalies Michael Sheremetta
and Connor Maxim turned away
27 shots to preserve the Panthers’
victory. David Mott, Boychuck
and Gianfriddo scored, with as-
sists to Bean with two, Harding and
Gianfriddo with one apiece.
In their next game, the Panthers
scored a close 4-3 win over HC Ben-
esov/Vlasm. Spencer Bently, Boy-
chuck, Bean and Gianfriddo scored,
with assists to Louis Del Re, Michael
Smith, Bean and Mott.
The Panthers dropped their third
game, 3-0, to tournament favourite
HK Ruzinov Bratislav, thus placing
them in second place in Pool ‘A’.
In exhibition play the day fol-
lowing the tournament victory, the
Panthers dropped a 4-0 decision
to the Prostejov (Czech Republic)
elite team, but rebounded to defeat
the Prostejov ‘B’ team 5-0. In their
third game of the day, the Canadi-
ans faced Team England, which also
participated in the Czech Republic
International Ice Hockey Tourna-
ment, winning 8-0.
In another exhibition game,
played on an outdoor ice rink
against Ceske Budejovice, the pow-
erful Czech team posted a 14-3 vic-
tory over the Canadians. The ice
rink had a view of a castle in the
background.
The Panthers also played a Ger-
man club team, the Lions, with the
Canadians winning 8-6.
The Panthers’ bantams dedicated
their efforts to trainer Bobby ‘Blob’
Price who had to pull out of the trip
at the last minute due to a family
commitment.

Advertising Sales Representative
“I have worked very successfully
as a regional and store manager in
the retail industry for many years. I
earned a good salary and enjoyed
the network of people around me
but time with family was limited
because the job required me to
work weekends and nights.
Finding this position with the
Goldbook has given me the
freedom and flexibility to attend to
my family priorities and still be
successful even though I had no
prior experience in directory sales
or advertising.
I have also found my earnings to
date to be greater than my previous
position. And the potential increase
in salary in the coming year is very
exciting.”

In Memory of my Twin Sister
Tracy Lynn Gorman
(nee Black)
January 10, 1972 -
December 7, 2002
I lay awake night after night
When the world is fast asleep,
I take a walk down memory lane
Wiping tears from my cheeks.
The thirty years I shared with you
Are worth their weight in gold,
The sisterhood that you gave me
is mine forever to have and to hold.
Five birthdays have now gone by
That I have to celebrate without you
It's weird to have the day to myself
And I never know what quite to do.
Remembering you is easy, Trace,
I do it everyday,
But missing you is heartache
That never goes away.
I hold you close within my heart
As a part of me you will always
remain,
To w alk with me throughout my life
Until we meet again.
Lots of love,
S

Have you ever thought how great it
would be if you could create those profes-
sional looking pieces of furniture like those
wood guys on TV? Sawing, measuring,
routering, turning wood into a bookcase, ar-
moire, dining room table or beautiful queen
size bed.
Sure they make it look easy. That’s
because they’ve had a great instructor and
all the right tools. They weren’t born with
a router in their hand. Someone put it there
and taught them how to use it.
At the Carpenter’s Square, you too
can learn how to create and build a piece of fi ne
furniture. There is always a great sense of satis-
faction and pride when you show off this piece of
furniture you made with your own hands.
The Carpenter’s Square is a clean, well
laid out and impressive 4,000 sq. ft. woodwork-
ing shop offering professional quality power and
hand tools to the do-it-yourselfer and profession-
als alike. The shop also boasts having over 1,100
clamps and many specialty tools. Everything you
could possibly want to complete your project.
The Carpenter’s Square is especially proud
of the woodworking courses offered and their
highly qualifi ed instructors that teach them.
“Myself and our instructors are with you
every step of the way,” says owner Rob McFarlane.
“We emphasize safety and one-on-one hands-on
assistance so you’re comfortable with the process
and the tools. But above all we make the experi-
ence of woodworking enjoyable. To enrol call Rob
at the Carpenter’s Square.
There is a 14-week course during which
you will design and build a entertainment unit or
armoire; a 12-week course where you will build a
traditional raised panel queen size bed; a 10-week
course where you will build a pine harvest dining
room table; and fi nally an 8-week intro course
where you will construct one of two specially de-
signed projects. You’ll love them.
The courses vary in cost and duration but a
quick call to the shop or logging on to their web-
site will give you all the information you need.
The courses appeal to both men and women
who want to try their hand at woodworking
and on many occasions we have father/son
and mother/daughter enrolling. It’s a won-
derful way to spend and share quality time
with your son or daughter.
The next round of courses start in February
and enrollment is being taken now.
Another impressive aspect of the Carpen-
ter’s Square is the custom woodworking side
of the business. Bring in your ideas or plans
and Rob will sit down with you and help you
bring those ideas to reality. Rob is especially
proud of the kitchens he designs and builds
along with built-in cabinets and fi ne pieces of fur-
niture.
The shop is available to the do-it-yourselfer
and professional alike who don’t have the space or
all the right tools to properly build their projects.
Fo r a very reasonable hourly rate you can have ac-
cess to the full shop and all of its tools. Ask about
the Co-op program giving you 24/7 access to the
shop. It’s a very unique and cost effective program
for the professionals. Also you can inquire about
their Club Memberships and “blocks of time”
passes that will give you great discounts.
The Carpenter’s Square is located at 804
Ritson Rd. S. (Rear Unit) in Oshawa. For more
information call (905) 433-9011 or visit their
website at www.thecarpenterssquare.com.

Guest storytellers, crafts,
take-home resources on
Jan. 26 in Oshawa
By Jillian Follert
jfollert@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — Where can you find oppor-
tunities to build your child’s literacy skills?
Pretty much anywhere, according to the
experts.
Restaurant menus, street signs, T-shirt
logos and food packages are just some of
the everyday things that can help families
integrate literacy into busy lives.
“Literacy goes way beyond just reading
story books to your child,” says Joan Gajad-
harsingh, an early literacy specialist with
the YWCA Durham Ontario Early Years
Centre.
“We encourage children to read the world
around them.”
That’s just one of the lessons parents can
pick up at the third annual Family Literacy
Fair taking place at the YWCA Durham On-
tario Early Years Centre on Jan. 26.
The fair, which will feature guest story
tellers, a puppet theatre, crafts and take-
home resources, is one of hundreds of
events taking place across Canada to cel-
ebrate Family Literacy Day.
Created in 1999 by the ABC CANADA
Literacy Foundation, the national initiative
promotes the importance of reading and
learning together as a family.
This year, popular children’s author Rob-
ert Munsch is the honorary chairman of the
initiative. He will be hosting two special
storytelling events online at www.ytv.com
and www.treehousetv.com.
In addition to working reading and words
into everyday activities, Ms. Gajadharsingh
wants parents to remember it’s never too
early to start. She says literacy lessons can
begin when a child is born and definitely
before they are in school.
According to a 1999 study by the Govern-
ment of Ontario, simple things like reading
and telling stories to a child at 18 months,
are powerful stimuli for brain develop-
ment.
A national survey indicates two- and
three-year-olds who are read to several
times a day do substantially better in kin-
dergarten at the age of four and five, than
those who are read to a few times a week or
less.
Luigia Ayotte, superintendent of programs
for the Durham District School Board, says
schools in Durham make literacy a priority
every day and recently increased efforts to
help parents do the same at home.
“To make what they’re learning in the
classroom really meaningful, it should con-
tinue at home,” she says.
“Research shows it has to be an ingrained
part of the daily experience.”
Ms. Ayotte had high praise for Village
Union P.S., which recently hosted a literacy
night for parents, and said many schools
are going above and beyond to ensure what
is learned in the classroom continues when
students leave for the day.
The Family Literacy Fair is hosted by the
Literacy Network of Durham Region, the
YWCA Durham Ontario Early Years Centre
and Ontario Early Years specialists.
It takes place Friday, Jan. 26, from 9:30
a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Ontario Early
Ye ars Centre located at 1 McGrigor St. in
Oshawa.
For more information, call 905-723-9922.

and find other events, visit www.abc-cana-
da.org.
Literacy tips from ABC Canada
- Pick one night a week to make a family trip
to the library
- Read aloud to your child and have them
read to you
- Ask your child questions about the story
being read
- Turn everyday activities into learning op-
portunities by asking a child to read menus,
shopping lists or street signs
- Let children count change when making
a purchase
- Read different stories every week with
varied lengths and subject matter
- Start early -- it’s never to soon to start
reading to your child.
Celebrate Family Literacy Day at Early Years Centre
Independent Learning
Centre offers free
tutoring and practice
DURHAM — Instead of sitting at home,
struggling to figure out their schoolwork,
students can ‘Ask a Teacher’ online.
With the Grade 9 provincial math test
fast approaching, students don’t have to
prepare at home, alone.
By visiting the Independent Learning
Centre’s ‘Ask a Teacher’ service at www.ilc.
org, students can receive free online tutor-
ing and practise questions.
Every Sunday through Thursday, from
5:30 to 9:30 p.m., they can log on to chat
with Ontario teachers in any subject,
Grades 9 through 12.
Registered students remain anonymous
as they connect one-on-one with teach-
ers.
The educators use text and virtual white-
board to write out formulas and theories
and help solve problems.
The site also features interactive prac-
tice questions, exercises and a glossary
of terms in math, science, and English for
students to access day or night.

The babysitting course teaches
important child-care skills, injury
prevention, safety tips and simple
meal preparations. It also includes
first aid skills for problems like
choking and bleeding.
First aid and babysitting courses
are available throughout 2007.
