As of 6 p.m. Oct. 5, Durham Region Transit (DRT) drivers took their buses out of service, the re- sult of unsuccessful contract ne- gotiation between DRT and the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) Local 222 representing 290 staff. “We gave our members the directive to shut the transit down at 6 p.m.,” Nikki Henderson, opera- tions stewart for Durham Region Transit East, said. “If you were in mid-route and you had passengers you were to take those passengers to their stop.” After dropping off the last pas- sengers, drivers took the buses to various depots and garages around the region and set up picket sites. “We hope it sends a message to the politicians it is a very unfor- tunate situation for the transit users and the tax- payers of the area,” Ms. Henderson said. N egotiations, which began last May, to settle a first collec- tive agreement between the two sides, broke down after 18 days at the bargaining table. Wednesday was the final scheduled day of negotiations and both sides said they went nowhere. According to Garth Johns, the Region’s com- missioner of human resources, CAW’s demands were simply too expensive. The Region maintains the final offer tabled on July 14 was a fair one. During the Oct. 4 transit commission meeting, DRT’s man- agement got a clear mandate to stay hard on the July 14 offer. According to management, the CAW had given the employer a list of more than 52 outstanding demands which included retiree benefits for life, Cost of Living Buses grind to a halt ✦ See Wages, Page 4 Photos by Jennifer Roberts Bill Edmondson warms himself by the fire Thursday night, a few hours after Durham Region Transit work- ers officially went on strike, ending all regular scheduled transit routes. More than 30 people, both those for and against the plan, spoke to council before it made its final decision Tues- day night regarding the redevelopment plan for the plaza at Bayly Street and St. Martin’s Drive that includes two high rise condo towers and 126 town- houses. Georgs Kolesnikovs asked council if they want to be known as “the guys who opened the gates to rampant de- velopment or do you want to be re- membered as men who had vision. “Be men of vision, give us the south Pickering we can be proud of for future generations,” he said. Mr. Kolesnikovs was one of 70 peo- ple who came out to see council make its final decision, down from 150 at previous meetings about the issue. “I’m opposed to the Bay Ridges Plaza redevelopment as presented, I’m not opposed to change,” said Sylvain Trepanier. He understands a compromise of seven or eight stories might not be via- ble for the developer, but he thought it would be better to have the two towers built at the back of the site, closer to the current 18-storey Bayshore Towers. Paul Fieldhouse, who lives in Bay- shore Towers behind the plaza, said he spent time talking to his neighbours since the application was endorsed by executive committee after the Sept. 11 meeting. “The most overwhelming response I got from people was ‘I want my grocery store back’ and ‘I don’t want more traf- fic’,” he said. Mr. Fieldhouse said he is not op- posed to change, he would just like to see the development scaled back. “It’s our neighbourhood and we don’t want to see two high-rise towers there,” he said. Several people expressed concern approval of the application would lead to other highrise projects along Bayly Street, including at the plaza next door to the site, which the applicant has purchased as well. But, not everyone who spoke at the meeting was against the application. Margaret Drake moved to Pickering from Scarborough 30 years ago and thought the Bayshore Towers stood out then in the Bay Ridges neighbourhood and she still think it looks odd. “The proposal will help correct that,” she said. “The proposed development will help bring us into the 21st cen- tury.” She added the development would help keep property taxes in line for all residents and that problems such as traffic are being addressed. Steve Webster said the current site is terrible. “It’s a complete eyesore to me...I’m happy a developer has taken the initia- tive to go ahead with something,” he said. Many businesses have closed or moved locations, although there are still nine operating, waiting to come to a fair agreement with the applicant. Mr. Webster said it was important for him to come and tell council how he feels. “I wouldn’t be here this evening un- less I felt strongly about it,” he said. Self-described urbanist Gardner Church spoke on behalf of the appli- cant. “This redevelopment plan is good for Bay Ridges and good for Pickering,” he said. “Communities do tend to oppose good planning because it represents change. It doesn’t change that what is before you is good planning.” Mr. Church suggested the use of a performance contract to make sure the commercial component is built. “It is absolutely essential the devel- oper’s feet be held to the fire when it comes to the commercial aspect,” he said. Council passed the amended rec- ommendation in a five-two recorded vote, with Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner and Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean voting against it. The application was approved with an “H” holding provision subject to conditions that would be outlined in a performance agreement. Some of the provisions of the performance agree- ment include maintaining a minimum of 1,250 square metres of retail space during construction of the townhouses and up to the commencement of the condo towers construction, during which time 500 square metres would be retained. The total commercial floor space upon completion of the project is to be 2,500 square metres. Susan Carlevaris, president of the Pickering East Shore Community Asso- ciation, made one final plea to council Tuesday night. “Clearly we’re disappointed,” she said after the meeting. “We had hoped for some compromise for the commu- nity.” Controversial Bay Ridges Plaza plan gets approval Myrna Picotte “I feel that this will make a better place for us to live and enhance our apartment building.” Ed Fulton “This may only be a rezoning appli- cation to some, but it is home to us. We have a feeling that we’ve been abandoned by our council.” Norlene Chong “I’m not opposed to any redevelop- ment, just what is being proposed.” Linda Rehel “I’m confident this will be an im- provement to our neighbourhood.” Anna Silva “We are very fortunate that we have a developer who wants to go into south Pickering and give it the face- lift it deserves.” Stephanie Newitt “I believe you need more time to consider the potential impact and precedent this decision has for Bay Ridges and Pickering as a whole.” VOICES FROM THE BAY RIDGES DEBATE An artist’s rendering shows the designs for the plan, by S & R Development Group Ltd., for two condo towers – one 18-storeys and one 16-stories – and 126 townhouses, as well as 2,500 square feet of commercial retail space. Three area schools were locked down as police converged on Gurr Crescent, in the area of Rossland and Westney roads, for a report of a home invasion around 2:20 p.m. Police initially had reports that as many as four assailants had entered a home and confronted a man in- side. Cops arriving on scene saw a man with a handgun flee on foot toward Westney. Officers fanned out across the area before mak- ing a gunpoint arrest on nearby Hughes Crescent. Police recovered a 9-mm handgun and a quantity of drugs from a sus- pect. Jordan Peniston, 19, of Gilder Crescent in Toronto, faces 14 charg- es including robbery, assault, three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and weapons offences. The arrest didn’t end the drama; three neighbourhood schools were locked down for about an hour and police remained on scene, guarding the Gurr Crescent house. Normally the job of securing the premises would have fallen to Dur- ham police’s elite tactical squad but as it turned out those officers were away for a scheduled training ses- sion, so Emergency Task Force mem- bers from Toronto were called in. They searched the house and found no one else inside. After the incident, Durham police obtained a search warrant for the Gurr Crescent house. An investiga- tion continues. A.J. Mr. Johns said the big-ticket items the transit work- ers are gunning for would cost the region $11 million. “That is absolute lunacy,” Mr. Johns said. “I am not going to do that to the Region.” The Region’s final offer, Mr. Johns said, offered transit work- ers a seven per cent adjustment, which would make DRT drivers the second highest paid in the province. “We are not talking about tak- ing away anyone’s pension,” Mr. Johns said. “We are not talking about touching any retirees ben- efits.” John Johnson, unit chairman for DRT’s Local 222, said the union is holding its ground for things like retiree benefits, cost of living al- lowance and health benefits. “Regional councillors are the ones who put us out on the street,” Mr. Johnson said. “They are trying to take away all of our benefits and working conditions. And that is why we are out here, not because of wages, the wages are fine.” Mr. Johnson said the nearly 300 drivers, maintenance staff and clerks are willing to keep area buses in park until the Region negotiates a fair collective agree- ment for workers. “(The membership) is fully be- hind us,” Mr. Johnson said. “We want a fair collective agreement and the Region is standing in the way of that. “We want them to come back to the table, so the ball is in their court right now.” During this labour disruption, DRT said they will try to main- tain transportation for Special- ized Services clients with medical needs. The transportation strike means public and Catholic school students in Ajax, Pickering and Oshawa will have to find their own ride to school. “We tried very hard, but we could not find enough buses to accommodate everybody in Ajax, Pickering and Oshawa,” said An- drea Pidwerbecki, communica- tions manager for the Durham District School Board. She said the board sent letters home with students Thursday, letting them know about what is happening and suggesting they make transportation plans in the event of a strike. Ms. Pidwerbecki said schools will also be under- standing if the morning transpor- tation arrangements caused some students to be late. Whitby and Brooklin students will not be af- fected by the strike, she said. Existing GO Bus services throughout the Region will con- tinue. The one fare anywhere in Durham Region, on GO Bus only, is not affected. Contracted services in Whitby and Brooklin will continue, in- cluding evening shuttles and Dial-a-Ride, however, no service will operate into the City of Os- hawa. North Durham Community Bus operations in the Townships of Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock will continue as per the regular sched- ule. Customers are advised to hold onto their October passes until after the strike and check the DRT website for updates. www.sklargallery.com Exceptional Warranty Superior Construction Fast Delivery life • style • solutions OSHAWA 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 905-723-4561 Hours: Mon.• Tues.• Wed. 10-6, Thurs.• Fri. 10-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun.11-5 Durham’s Newest & Largest Sklar Peppler Furnishings Store! I was not at all impressed by the quality of the rhetoric being spouted by some of the current incumbents. It was only Ajax Mayor Steve Parish who made any sense. The majority of the elderly, long-time councillors do not grasp the significance of their action vis-a-vis the mandate established by the Province to preserve green space and so to prevent future urban sprawl. Their attitude has a negative impact on the future well-being of Durham Region and its inhabitants, because Durham will not get funding for infrastructure improvements. The majority of the delegations spoke persuasively in favour of the green belt legislation, but their pleas fell on deaf ears. The development industry was also well represented. The Provincial Green Belt plan and the direct election of the Regional Chairperson will be hot-button issues during the municipal election campaign. It is most important that the electorate of Durham Region gets actively involved beforehand, and then comes out to vote in larger numbers than normal, particularly for regional councillor and mayoral positions. I look forward to seeing lots and lots of new faces when the new council convenes for its inaugural meeting. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 6, 2006 durhamregion.com I now head west on Hwy. 401, instead of east. I haven’t driven in the wrong direction yet but it’s just a matter of time. Let me introduce myself. My name is Mike Johnston and I’m the new managing editor of the News Advertiser. I’m not a stranger to many of the people working in our office, having worked with some of them for the past 15 years as part of the Metroland group but out of a different of- fice. In 1991, I was asked by Metroland to head out to Cobourg and start a new newspaper. We began as a once-a-week paper with six or seven employees. Fifteen years later the paper is twice a week, puts out many other supplements, and employs about 25 people. Before heading out to Cobourg I worked for the local Metroland papers, cover- ing Whitby council, Oshawa council and Durham Region Council. The big political names then were Bob Attersley, Jim Witty and Gary Herrema. So now I’m back in Durham Region and getting used to the hustle and bustle of a large region. Crime was of the small variety in Co- bourg, with a few exceptions. My first week at the News Advertiser saw a 12-year-old boy killed on Hwy. 401 and a murder at the Rim Rock, just around the corner from our office in Ajax. ‘Wel- come to the big city,’ many of my former colleagues e-mailed me. But crime aside, it’s nice to know many people care enough about their community to call me or stop by the office to make a point. It seems concerns aren’t that differ- ent from a small town. It’s just in Ajax and Pickering they are on a larger scale. Growth, development, and employment opportunities to keep kids from leaving the area to find a job are some of the con- cerns I’ve heard about in just the past few weeks. But, with the controversial there is also the positive side. I have also noticed this area has a busy sports and recreation com- munity and a vibrant arts scene. Those positive assets are what makes a commu- nity. Having one son in rep basketball, an- other in hockey and a third bitten by the acting bug, I know how important it is to find an outlet for their interests. The staff here at the News Advertiser has won many Ontario and national awards and I feel privileged to be a part of the team, even if I sometimes have to explain my jokes due to the age gap. They have made me feel welcome and quickly caught me up to speed on many of the pressing is- sues the two communities face, plus some of the great places to eat near the office. They were right about Mainly Cheese and don’t get me started on Arby’s. I look forward to getting to know this area better and discovering all it has to offer. And if I’m late in returning a call it’s because I have taken a wrong turn on the highway. Managing editor Mike Johnston’s col- umn appears every third week. E-mail mjohnston@durhamregion.com. Head west, youngish man Mike Johnston managing editor The race is on Ajax and Pickering now have a full slate of candidates contesting the Nov. 13 municipal election. We’re happy to report there are races in all the council spots, with 17 candidates signed up in Ajax and 18 in Picker- ing. That includes a race for the Ajax and Pickering mayoral posts. As for the various school board trustee positions, only incumbent Sylvie Landry has been acclaimed as the local trustee on le Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest, the French-language, public school board. As many residents are aware, voter turnout in municipal elections is poor. In the 2003 election, just 26.7 per cent of Ajax and 28.7 per cent of Pickering residents cast a ballot. The reasons escape us. Municipal government is the closest to residents, responsible for so many of the day-to-day services we depend upon. City and regional councillors and trustees live in our communities and are our neighbours. At no level of government can Ajax and Pickering residents have more input on decision-making. Ye t, the electorate is strangely silent. The answer could be apathy or contentment with the status quo. But, that doesn’t explain why this newspaper receives letters from residents about the provincial green belt and councillors’ take on it, development, green bin and garbage collection and so on. Clearly, there are many residents with opinions on these and other local issues. Do your town and city a service this year and get involved in the campaign. Become an informed voter. You can see who’s running in your ward by visiting durham- region.com. Ask your friends and neighbours about the can- didates and call them yourself to gauge their views, including on any specific issues that concern you. You can also attend one of what will likely be a few candidate debates in the next few weeks. You’ve got more than a month to avoid becoming one of those people who do not vote or, just as bad, pick the incumbent for no good reason or candidates at the top of the list because their surname begins with an ‘A’ or ‘B’. Once you’ve done your homework, get out and vote. If you can’t make it on election day, there are several opportunities (four each in Ajax and Pickering) to vote in advance of the actual election date, so be sure and mark your Xs. Owners held in jail on murder conspiracy charge By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — Local bikers -- in- cluding two men accused of con- spiring to commit murder -- were in a courtroom Monday as the gov- ernment proceeded with a motion aimed at seizing the Hells Angels’ Oshawa clubhouse. Security at the Rossland Road courthouse in Whitby was heavy as Mark Stephenson and Remond Akleh, two of 27 bikers caught up in a massive sweep by police last week, were brought into court in shackles and handcuffs. Uni- formed and plainclothes cops filled the upstairs hallway outside the court, sharing space with a group of about half a dozen bikers. Each of the accused men nod- ded and raised cuffed hands to ac- knowledge their biker associates as they were marched separately into the court under guard. Earlier they had appeared in Ontario Court in Oshawa on conspiracy and other charges, and were remanded in custody. Mr. Stephenson and Mr. Akleh are two of the three men listed as owners of 487 Ortono Ave., the Hells Angels clubhouse in central Oshawa. The other owner listed on title is David Wilgosz, who the Crown says is a member of the To ronto East Chapter of the Hells Angels. The property was frozen last week by a Superior Court judge as the provincial Attorney General moved to seize it under the Civil Remedies Act. A lawyer for the Province said the goal of the court action is to force forfeiture of the property to the Crown. On Monday Superior Court Justice Myrna Lack extended the order freezing the property until later this month, at which time the bikers are to have legal representa- tion on the civil action. In court documents, the prov- ince asserts that the Ortono Av- enue bunker, in addition to being a headquarters for a recognized criminal organization, has been identified by Durham police for years as a “booze can.” Cops have raided the club on a number of oc- casions, finding evidence of illegal alcohol sales and laying charges under the Liquor Licence Act, the court file says. Under the Civil Remedies Act, courts can freeze property and as- sets pending the outcome of for- feiture proceedings. The onus is on the government to prove the assets are proceeds or instruments of unlawful activity, according to information on the Attorney Gen- eral’s website. Forfeiture is not dependent on asset owners being convicted on criminal charges. The Attorney General contends the clubhouse is a centre of opera- tions for the notorious outlaw biker gang. “It is a meeting place for members of the criminal organiza- tion where they can network and plan with others for the purpose of committing unlawful acts in rela- tive security from police trying to enforce the law,” the Crown states in its application to the court. The clubhouse has also operated as a booze can on an ongoing basis and is likely to continue as such unless the property is forfeited, the Crown asserts. Durham police have kept a close eye on the property since the Province made its move. Tuesday, cruisers were still positioned by the bunker’s steel fence to pre- vent entry. Mr. Stephenson and Mr. Akleh were among 27 gang mem- bers and associates arrested last week during Operation Tandem, a multi-jurisdictional police effort that targeted the Hells Angels and Va gabonds Clubs. Five members of the Oshawa Hells Angels chapter were busted, the majority of them for drug trafficking. Mr. Stephen- son, identified as president of the Oshawa Chapter and Mr. Akleh, formerly with the Oshawa chapter and now a member of the Angels’ elite Nomads group, are accused of plotting to commit a murder in Maple. Maurice Kondell and Oswald Prithipaul embraced after Superior Court Justice Robert Clark cleared them of all charges. The judge went so far as to apologize to the men for the legal ordeal they’ve faced since being charged in the summer of 2004. “Nobody should be brought to trial on false evidence,” Justice Clark said Tuesday morning after the trial, which began a week ago, was abruptly halted. “You have my apology.” The judge also instructed Crown counsel Brenda Green to have Dur- ham Regional Police look into the false testimony and determine if charges are warranted. Five young women alleged they were groped by the two men while working at a Wendy’s restaurant on Taunton Road in 2003 and 2004. The bombshell erupted in a Whitby courtroom Tuesday morn- ing when Ms. Green informed Jus- tice Clark she’d received information that a number of young women who have testified weren’t truthful when asked about plans to pursue a law- suit based on the allegations. Ms. Green asked that charges against the men be withdrawn. The judge declared a mistrial and released a jury that had heard sev- eral days of evidence, telling them, “It appears witnesses from whom you have heard lied to this court and lied to you. “It’s a bizarre development and a very unusual one,” Justice Clark said. Outside court a relieved Mr. Kon- dell fought back tears as he recount- ed the toll the accusations and sub- sequent trial have taken. “I’ve lost everything,” he said. “I’ve lost my business.” Mr. Kondell worked his way up through the management hierarchy at the Wendy’s chain, becoming the first black franchise owner in Cana- da, said his lawyer, David Gillespie. “He lost his ownership in Wendy’s because of these false allegations,” Mr. Gillespie said. A ban on publication of complain- ants’ names in the case remains in place. Justice Clark said he may con- sider lifting the ban for those found to have tendered false testimony. DURHAM — Friday marks the beginning of a long weekend and Durham police are hoping to have an impact on busy holiday traffic. Police here and across the country are taking part in Operation Impact, a four-day blitz aimed at cracking down on safety issues and aggressive driving. During Operation Impact, running from Oct. 6 to 9, officers will be on the lookout for behaviour that puts motorists and others around them at risk. Impaired driving, proper seatbelt use and all forms of aggressive driving will be targeted, police said. The nation-wide blitz is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and is part of Road Safety Vision 2010, a program to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world by 2010. ‘Operation Impact’ takes to roads Friday drinfo.ca/fosterblog.htmlREPORTER CARLY FOSTERFOLLOW ALL OUR BLOGS durhamregion. typepad.com BLOG Life with Lucy A new mum’s first moments with baby 2000 Champlain Ave., Whitby 905-579-7573 905-683-CAMP(2267) • Rentals • Parts • Service • Sales www.owasco.com Y OU ’ RE IN OWASCO C OUNTRY W E W ON ’ T BE U NDERSOLD ! The now disbanded Pickering Optimist Club came together at Vaughan Willard Public School to see its legacy live on through Sparky The Fire Dog. “He is gorgeous, isn’t he,” said Elsie Bountiff. “I think he will impress the chil- dren.” Because of dwindling membership numbers, the Pickering Optimist Club de- cided to call it quits at the end of 2005. That left just one more job for members – dividing the money raised through the club’s bingo fundraisers. Ms. Bountiff, the bingo chairwoman, thought of the fire department and gave it a call. Fire Inspector Steve Fowl- ds said the club called and told firefighters to compile a wish list of items that would help with fire safety for chil- dren. “As soon as they heard the idea of Sparky, they said that’s what we wanted,” he said. Judging by the reaction Tuesday, they made the right decision. As Sparky emerged from behind the black divider, the gymnasium of 50 or so Grade 1, 2 and kindergar- ten students erupted into laughter and cheers, with many of them waving to the robotic dalmatian in his little red fire truck. Sparky greeted them with the flash- ing of his red lights and a wail of his siren. Sparky, with the help of Mr. Fowlds, told the chil- dren about smoke alarms and charged them with the responsibility of going home and reminding their parents to check that their detectors worked. The students learned a lot from the safety mascot. “I learned you only call the fire department in an emergency, not for play,” said Megan Zani. Her sister Samantha said she learned “about what to do about escape plans.” Katie Service and her sister Nicole both thought Sparky was funny and nice. When asked what her fa- vourite part was, Katie re- plied, “when he was spin- ning around.” Sparky is controlled by a remote control and head set that allows him to wink, move his mouth, rev his en- gine, move forward, back- ward or in a circle, and he also has a water cannon, but that didn’t get used for his debut. His license plate recognizes the club that is responsible for him being in Pickering. Fire Chief Bill Douglas was also on hand for the af- ternoon. He said Sparky is a more effective tool than just having a firefighter speak to students. “The kids associate with Sparky, they always have. That’s the key,” he said. “It’s something different. It is Sparky talking to them.” The fire department is grateful to the Pickering Op- timist Club. “We wouldn’t get (Sparky) through the budget process and we knew that and that’s why we’re so appreciative,” Mr. Fowlds said. The robotic tool cost $12,000. It is going to be used at open houses, com- munity safety days and for larger school gatherings such as assemblies. Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo Vaughan Willard Public School students, Becky Addison, left, Dante Wright and William Stevens, are delighted with the new Sparky the Dog robot that has joined the Pickering Fire Services’ public education division. Helen Charlton is a wine- loving, man-loving woman who smokes and spends money faster than she earns it. But, that doesn’t mean the Ajax actress is unaccustomed to playing characters like her in ‘Rumours’, a new CBC series debut- ing Monday at 9:30 p.m. “She’s the ultimate best friend,” Leblanc says in an interview. “She tells you what you want to hear and sometimes what you don’t want to hear. She’s forever dating. For some odd reason I tend to play this character a lot when my own life and my real world is the opposite.” ‘Rumours’ is both the name of the show and also the name of the magazine that is its setting. Le Blanc describes it as “a girly show that’s kind of like ‘Ally McBeal’ meets ‘Just Shoot Me’.” Rumours maga- zine in Toronto is oriented toward wom- en’s lifestyle and gossip, and into this mix comes Ben Devlin (David Haydn-Jones), the magazine’s co-editor, a sports writer by trade and a guy’s guy who would rather be working elsewhere. He shares the helm of the magazine with Sarah Barnaby (Amy Price-Francis), Helen’s best friend. Le Blanc notes that ‘Rumours’ is based on an existing show that runs on CBC’s French-language network, and the two share the same set, crew and one executive producer. “What they’ve done is flipped it around and made it a ‘comidrama’,” she says. Le Blanc is thrilled that CITY-TV founder Moses Znaimer is co-executive producer of the show, shot in hi-definition format, and has great hopes for it. “It’s a really great little show,” she says. “It’s a little gem in Canada.” She spent six months shooting the first 22 episodes in Montreal and hopes ‘Ru- mours’ gets picked up for a second season. The first episode is an hour-long season opener, to be followed by half-hour epi- sodes. And, while her character may not be prominent in the first few episodes, Le Blanc says that changes. “Helen’s part gets bigger and bigger as the show goes,” she says. “By, say, the fifth episode, there are a lot of Helen story- lines.” Born and raised in Ajax, Le Blanc attend- ed Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School and Pickering High School. While the show has kept her busy, she does have a new movie coming out, ‘The King of Sorrow’, directed by Damian Lee. Television viewers tuning in to ‘Ru- mours’ will likely recognize Le Blanc, no stranger to the small screen. Most re- cently, she played Lucy in the TV movie ‘Live Once, Die Twice’, Connie Fox in an episode of ‘Naked Josh’, and Norah Barnes in an episode of ‘Kevin Hill’. While Le Blanc has a string of acting credits under her belt, she acknowledges that achieving and maintaining success in the acting world is no easy task. “Things are just starting to pick up for me now,” she says. “It’s been a long strug- gle. I’ve had to work for this for eight years. There’s a lot of ups and downs in this busi- ness.” submitted photo Ajacian Sadie Le Blanc has paid her dues in the entertainment industry and her reward is to play Helen Charlton on the new CBC series, ‘Rumours’, debuting Monday night. Pickering artist Falkenberg sharing space at Station Gallery DURHAM — Space may or may not be the final frontier, but it is definitely the focus of the current exhibit at Station Gal- lery. Poetics of Space, featuring the works of Pickering sculptor Edward Falkenberg and artist Ron Eccles of Bowmanville, was pulled together by interim curator Gil McElroy. It runs until Oct. 22. While Falkenberg works in sculpture and Eccles in paintings and prints, there is a common denominator and that is space, said Falkenberg. “In Ron’s work, he’s using geometric forms,” he said. “They have got space and depth to them. In my pieces, I capture space. I capture it within the piece itself. I’m using negative space as something to be modelled.” Think of negative space as the space inside a teacup. Falkenberg said he takes such negative space and makes it positive. “The show was set up several years ago and it’s just come together under the new curator at the gallery. It was really the cura- tor who put it together,” Eccles said. He added his paintings are very sculp- tural, with visible brush strokes, and much texture and colour. He doesn’t set out to paint but approach- es his works as “a process of painting.” His final works are designed through the pro- cess, he said. “I start working. It feeds the imagina- tion,” he said. “A lot of it just comes through being, through being and creating. The imagery is created through the process.” Falkenberg’s works are from his Tree- house series, which grew from his Paradise Revisited works. They are, with a couple of new pieces, all treehouses. “They have to do with climbing to your space, your goal in life. They started in 1994 and it’s a continuous series. It’s an open-ended series. I haven’t come to an end of new ideas. It’s very fluid,” the sculp- tor said. Some of the treehouses represent child- hood dreams, others represent climbing the corporate ladder. All have to do with reaching your goals. And all also indicate that when you think you’ve reached the top, there’s something else to strive for, just out of reach, he said. His works are being show together for the first time as a type of forest inside the gallery. The gallery, located at Victoria and Henry streets, is open Monday, Tuesday, We dnesday and Friday from 10 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. After losing to Waterloo earlier in the tournament, the Spartans put together a complete effort with big bats and solid pitching to score a convincing 9-3 victory over Wa- terloo in the championship final. Thomas Fearon earned the win on the mound in the final, with Ky le Taylor coming on in relief. Luke Ruggiero Jr. and Todd Blair provided big hits in helping Ajax to the crown. Ajax started the tournament with an 8-4 victory over Hamilton. Fearon started on the mound, with Ta ylor providing solid work in re- lief. Nick Arruda and Ethan Sayers were the stars of the game. In Game 2, the Spartans post- ed a narrow 9-8 victory over St. Catharines. Shane Murli and Kyle Lewis supplied inspired play for the Spartans. Wayne Feltham start- ed on the mound and picked up the win. Fearon finished in relief. Jacob Featherstone and Blair con- tributed key hits in the close win. The Ajacians lost their only game of the tournament, 8-7, to Water- loo in Game 3. Troy Campbell and Brandon Kushner were the game stars. Taylor started the game on the mound, with Arruda and Murli working in relief. The Spartans rolled over Thorn- hill 4-0 in Game 4. Starting pitcher Cody Nikolaou combined with re- liever Feltham for the shutout vic- tory. Blair had a big game for Ajax. Fa cing an undefeated Erindale club in Game 5, the Ajax bats came alive in a major way en route to a 16-1 victory to earn a bye to the championships. Fearon, Feather- stone and Taylor each drove in sev- eral runs. Fearon earned the win on the mound, with Murli finishing up in relief. In addition to an OBA title, the Ajax Spartans bantams also won tournament titles in Mississauga and London earlier in the sum- mer. Luke Ruggiero Sr., Gord Lewis and Frank Arruda coach the team. Jan Lewis is the general manager. A.J. Panthers subdue plucky Blues in OT Pickering juniors go for fifth win in a row tonight By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Pat Curcio has seen it all in his short, two-and-a- half weeks as the Pickering Panthers head coach. From a humbling loss to the pow- erhouse St. Michael’s Buzzers in his coaching debut to, following that loss, building a four-game winning streak, Curcio takes it all in stride, not getting too high or too low in the peaks and valleys of a long junior ‘A’ hockey season. But, in his coaching life, not to mention his 12 years as a pro hockey player, he admits he’s never seen anything like Tuesday’s OHA On- tario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League con- test against the Colling- wood Blues in Colling- wood. “It’s a game that doesn’t happen very often. I’ve never seen anything like it,” says Cur- cio about the Panthers’ 8-7 overtime victory over the Blues (7-1-0-1, sec- ond in North Conference), which came into the game as one of the hottest teams in the league. The Panthers (6-4-0-0, tied for third in South Conference stand- ings) go for a fifth straight win tonight (Friday) at the Pickering Recreation Complex with the Toronto Junior Canadians (formerly the Wexford Raiders) coming for their first game against Pickering this season. Game time is 8:30 p.m. Friday’s game against the Junior Canadians, says Curcio, should serve as another stern test for the Panthers, as Toronto is coming off a 2-2 overtime tie with the sizzling Vaughan Vipers, which has yet to lose a league game this season. “They’re going to be ready and prepared to play. If we’re not pre- pared to play and sacrifice, we’re going to lose,” he says. What was exceptional about Tuesday’s game? Well, after a rela- tively normal first two periods, all hell broke loose from a goal-scor- ing standpoint in the third period. In that frame, the teams combined for eight goals, with the Panthers holding two-goal leads twice in the period. The Blues rallied to tie the score on both occasions. The Blues pulled to within one goal with a mere 2:11 remaining in the third and then, with goaltender Matt Kinsella on the bench, struck for the equalizer on a stunned Pan- thers club with 55 seconds to go. After Collingwood scored the tying goal, Curcio says he and as- sistant coach Mike Heffering called a time-out to allow his players to regroup. “We told them, ‘listen, we’ve been the better team all night and we’re not going to stop now’,” sa ys Curcio. The pep talk seemed to work. Off the face-off, the Panthers worked the puck deep in the Collingwood zone, captain Richard Schofield won a battle along the boards and centred the puck to Justin Fox who connected for the winner just 26 seconds into the extra frame. “It was definitely an emotional game against a Collingwood team that’s 7-1 and an honourable men- tion among the top junior teams in Canada. We beat a very good hockey team in their rink, so that was the positive event of the day,” says Cur- cio. The Panthers also play on home ice against the Huntsville-Muskoka Otters Wednesday, Oct. 11 at the Pickering Recreation Complex at 7:30 p.m. SCORING SUMMARY Period 1 Pickering - Richard Schofield (PP) (Greg Riggs, Brett Connolly) 5:41 Collingwood - Matt McCann (unas- sisted) 10:41 Pickering - Schofield (PP) (Justin Fox) 12:08 Collingwood - Ryan Elbers (short- handed) (unassisted) 14:00 Period 2 Collingwood - Matt McCann (Kriss Velss) 3:07 Pickering - Fox (PP) (Riggs, Todd Hos- mer) 11:59 Period 3 Pickering - Brad Fleishman (SH) (Riggs) 1:27 Pickering - Riggs (PP) (Hosmer, Fleishman) 5:30 Collingwood - Shane Cater (PP) (D Arcy Oakes, Justin Wakewich) 7:29 Pickering - Schofield (PP) (Matt Rig- trup, Connolly) 12:19 Collingwood - Ryan Elbers (Kody Col- lins) 15:45 Pickering - Connolly (Riggs, Zack Fen- wick) 16:09 Collingwood - Jonathon Dew (Brett Zeggil, Kriss Velss) 17:49 Collingwood - Ryan Elbers (unas- sisted) 18:05 Overtime Pickering - Fox (unassisted) 0:26 Pat Curcio AJAX — Armchair quarterbacks can get in the game as the NFL is searching for Canada’s best EA SPORTS Madden NFL 07 player in Durham Region. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, October 6, 2006 PAGE 29 A/Pdurhamregion.com Tykes, peewees drop football games to Burlington DURHAM — The atoms remain the only undefeated Ajax-Pickering Dolphins’ team after league games against the Burlington Stampeders in Pickering last Sunday. The atoms increased their league-leading record to 7-0 after blasting the Stamped- ers 47-12 in Central Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL) action at Kinsmen Park. The Dolphins tykes (5-2) lost 27-9 to Burl- ington, and the peewees (6-1) dropped their first of the season, 16-8 to the Stamps. In the atom contest, AJ Thomas recovered the ball after the Dolphins’ opening kick-off at the Burlington 50-yard line. Ajax-Pickering scored on its first play from scrimmage as quarterback Mike Stobbart sailed a pass to the right side to Thomas, who ran 50 yards for the touchdown. After defensive back Thomas and de- fensive lineman Keifer Smith-Gho made big plays to keep the Burlington offence in check, the Dolphins’ offence went back to work. A 14-play drive ended with a four-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown. Kicker Luke Taylor Eskins was good on the convert. The Burlington offence came on strong with a 50-yard run before being tracked down by defensive back Keldyn Ahlstedt on the Dolphins’ 20-yard line. The Stamps moved the ball another 10 yards and then fumbled, with the recovery by safety Keith Cyrus. Early in the second quarter, fullback Ahlstedt broke an 85-yard touchdown run. The Burlington offence had a sustained nine-play drive before strong defensive play by defensive linemen Justin Smith and Rae Grant forced Burlington to punt. Stobbart hooked up with another pass, this time to running back Shaq Lawrence on a 57-yard touchdown strike. Following a Burlington touchdown, the Dolphins’ special teams made a statement on the Burlington kick-off as Denver Wright broke loose down the sidelines for a 70-yard touchdown. Dolphins led 32-6 at half-time. In the second half, with Burlington threat- ening to score on the Dolphins’ two-yard line, the Dolphins’ defence held the Stamps to no yards on three plays. On a fourth-down gamble, a Burlington pass was picked off by Thomas, who ran the entire 110 yards back for the major. Eskins scored a two-pointer to extend the Dolphins’ lead. Burlington scored its final points early in the fourth quarter on a 12-play touchdown drive. Ajax-Pickering’s final touchdown came on a 55-yard run by running back Cyrus. Ahlstedt ran into the end zone for the single point. Offensive players of the game were Thom- as, Ahlstedt and Stobbart. Defensive players were Smith-Gho with 10 tackles for the day and Thomas with 10 tackles and one inter- ception for a touchdown. Thomas, Ahlstedt, Stobbart offensive stars; Smith-Gho, Thomas defensive stars In the tyke game, the Dolphins fell behind early, trailing 27-0 at half time and, although making up ground in the final half, weren’t able to come back against a strong Stamped- ers squad. The Dolphins managed strong running plays by Morgan Humes, Spencer Thomas and Mathew Williams. One of the highlights of the game was a long punt return by Jackson Lyder, who took the ball down to the three-yard line. On the next play, the Dolphins’ offence took the ball into the end zone on a run by quarterback Rion Johnson. Kicker Chris Tzortzouklis converted the touchdown. Lineman Jadin Ash-Dawson played his best game of the season.
