PICKERING — With hip-wad-
ers and nets, Dunbarton students
are really getting into their Urfe
Creek urban watershed studies.
Instead of sitting in class May
9, the Pickering school’s Grade
11 urban watershed science stu-
dents went to Urfe Creek to col-
lect bugs as part of their studies.
The field trip was one of several
planned for the class throughout
the month.
“We’re really lucky because
we get to come out and it’s re-
ally hands on,” said student Lisa
Beairsto after finishing her work
in the stream.

PICKERING — The federal gov-
ernment is shutting the commu-
nity out of the peer review process
for the proposed Pickering airport,
says Mark Holland.
The Ajax-Pickering MP has been
meeting with Transport Minister
Lawrence Cannon’s staff and was
told they’ve decided not to seek
public input. In a letter dated May
3, he wrote to discuss his disap-
pointment “to learn that there will
be no public consultation either
in setting the terms of reference
for the review or during the review
itself.”
Hugette Guilhaumon, Mr.
Cannon’s director of communica-
tions, wouldn’t confirm whether
or not the peer review is going to
include public consultation. She
said they’ve received Mr. Holland’s
letter.
“We are in the process of an-
swering the letter now,” she said.
Once the response has been
sent, she said they would be able
to discuss the issue.
Transport Canada spokeswom-
an Paula Fairfax said the due dili-
gence review is going to be con-
ducted by the government depart-
ment as most of the studies being
reviewed are technical in nature.
“Should Transport Canada re-
quire technical experts, it would
contract with outside technical ex-
perts,” she said.
Stephen Frederick, president of
Vo ters Organized to Cancel the
Airport Lands (VOCAL), is still op-
timistic about the review, but isn’t
happy to hear this might be the
way the review goes.

obvious bias in this process since

DURHAM — A regional committee
has a list of unresolved concerns sur-
rounding the Province’s recently released
Central Pickering Development Plan.
During a May 17 meeting, members
of the joint planning, finance and works
committees approved staff report rec-
ommendations summarizing the issues
with the development plan, prepared
by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and
Housing.
The Central Pickering Development
Plan is a provincial study for develop-
ment in provincially-owned Seaton,
which would see up to 70,000 residents
and 35,000 jobs created.
“There is still much work to be done
as we proceed into the next step of im-
plementation,” said Dorothy Skinner, a
senior planner with the Region.
She said the next stage of implemen-
tation includes
planning, such
as regional fiscal
and natural heri-
tage studies.
Staff recom-
mendations in-
clude advising
the minister of
municipal affairs
that Durham will
continue to pur-
sue resolutions
through Stage 2 of the plan’s implemen-
tation.
Issues listed include the establishment
of a provincial role in achieving a viable,
long-term agricultural community, and
servicing and financing to make sure the
Region is fully funded for infrastructure.
The Region also wants to ensure it does
not bear any long-term operating fees
relating to water and sewer, servicing the
federal airport lands, Hwy. 407 employ-
ment lands, transportation concerns
such as 407 interchanges and Hwy. 7
upgrades, among others.
Also approved by committee was ad-
vising the minister that Durham objects
to any financial incentive in the Pickering
development plan that suggests a re-
duction in municipal fees to encour-
age high-density housing; amending
Durham’s Official Plan to recognize the
central Pickering development plan is in
effect; and sending a copy of the report
to the minister of municipal affairs and
housing and others.
“We’re not endorsing anything,” said
Alex Georgieff, commissioner of plan-
ning.
He added the report was just to inform
the Province of inefficiencies in the de-
velopment plan and to identify concerns
still needing to be met.
A fiscal impact study is currently un-
derway, examining the ongoing and
capital costs of regional infrastructure
required for financial agreements with
the Region, according to a staff report.
The study, which should be done by the
end of the year, will help the Region po-
sition itself during negotiations with the
Province, said Mr. Georgieff
Durham Chairman Roger Anderson
asked for a report to come back by the
end of September, with a list of growth
patterns and an idea of what other ser-
vices and money will be needed for the
new community.
Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said there
needs to be a very specific action plan on
how the Province will remain engaged in
working with those lands and the future
community. Following up on those com-
ments, Mr. Anderson said the report he
is asking for is important because the
Region will be able to move forward and
make sure there is money for services.

The Power
PICKERING — Suzanne Henning is celebrating the opening of
her new business, Power of 3 Yoga and Wholeness Studio, at 599
Liverpool Rd. The business offers yoga, kick boxing and wellness
classes that promote and encourage a strong, flexible and peace-
ful mind, body and spirit. For information, visit www.p3yoga.com.
tershed science allows students
to design, implement, analyse
data, conduct field studies and
report their findings to the pub-
lic. The program began in 2003
in response to community dis-
cussions about local watersheds,
said teacher David Gordon.
“We’re hoping to influence de-
velopment policy,” said Mr. Gor-
don.
The class will use information
gathered from the project to cre-
ate a case for sustainable, in-
creased density development.
“The argument we want to
present is there has to be some-
thing better than sprawling out
across the land,” Mr. Gordon
added.
For the Urfe Creek project, two
students at a time entered the
creek, scuffed its bottom and
caught the bugs it brought up
with a net. Insects were put into
a tub using squirt bottles of creek
water, and were later counted
and identified using a chart.
“Midge count number one,”
said Stuart West, as he removed
a small bug with a pair of twee-
zers.
Student Alicia Schick said the
group will generally be able to
tell what’s in the creek by what
bugs they find.
“Some of them have a low
tolerance (to pollution) so that
means the water’s pretty clean,”
said Colin Leighton.
Along with worms, stone flies
and other bugs, the students also
came across frogs and fish.
“It shows the river is really ac-
tive and healthy,” said Colin.
Before the class performed its
collection, it set up the site by
making various measurements
and diagrams, taking photo-
graphs and documenting vegeta-
tion and forest cover.
Te st sites for May include Ga-
natsekaigon Creek, Little Rouge
Creek, an unnamed creek in Box
Grove in Markham, as well as
Urfe.
About 50 people will be invited
to the class’s community presen-
tation of the its findings and re-
port in late June.
The project receives help from
university student volunteers
and also gets financial support
from the Pickering Rotary Club
and TD Friends of the Environ-
ment Foundation.

-– that will not happen if it is done

Mr. Frederick said when the
community was advocating for the
peer review, which the previous
government announced in Sep-
tember, it wanted a comprehen-
sive review of the aviation environ-
ment in southern Ontario to be a
part of it.
“The peer review (was) not just
(to) review the technical studies,
what we intended the peer review
to be is get an evaluation of the en-

he said. “It

will be mobilized.
“We would bring both guns to
bear on the Conservative govern-
ment,” he said.
While Mr. Holland acknowl-
edges much of the review would
be technical in nature he argues
in his letter that many members
of the north Pickering community
have been dealing with this issue
for more than 30 years and have
a lot of knowledge to share. As
well, allowing public consultation
would be a sign of good faith to a
community that is cynical about
government, he said.
“It wouldn’t have been a big
undertaking to include the pub-
lic in the peer review,” he said.
He was willing to invite staff from
the minister’s office to conduct the
public consultation at one of his
own town hall meetings.
Mr. Holland is anxious to see the
terms of reference and know the
reason behind “shutting the com-
munity” out.
“This process is turning into
something that is a farce,” he said.

EDITORIAL
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
We all can help
SAVE youth
A group of committed volunteers in Durham is tired of
simply talking about youth violence. Instead, they’re
prepared, on June 4, to walk the walk when it comes to
the issue.
Last Monday, at Durham Region headquarters in Whitby,
chairwoman Sandra Mackey stepped up to launch Society
Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE), a partnership of various
and diverse community organizations.
SAVE’s mission is a simple one, its work complex. It wants to
address the root causes of youth violence and try to get to the
problem before it gets out of hand and results in pain and suf-
fering and jail time. SAVE proposes supporting new and existing
programs to spread the message to at-risk youth that there are
positive alternatives to violence. That requires time, effort and
funding. And lots of all three.
Concerns have been raised in recent years that with the
constant growth in Durham Region, crime problems will inevi-
tably increase. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. A
concerted, concentrated community effort that involves lots of
hard-working volunteers can make a very positive difference.
All it takes is a little optimism and a lot of dedication to make
good things happen.
Ms. Mackey, a civilian supervisor with the Durham Region
Police communications department, is helping lead the effort
but she will need a lot of assistance. And that’s where you come
in. A very good place to start with SAVE is to sign up sponsors
and take part in the six-kilometre walk on Sunday, June 4. It only
costs $5 to register to take part.
The walk leaves from the Civic Auditorium, 99 Thornton Rd.
S., Oshawa, at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome. To register or for
information about it, call 905-743-SAVE (7283) or log on to the
organization’s website at www.societyagainstviolence.org.
The group, at 64 Simcoe St. N. in Oshawa, needs volunteers.
Give them a call and find out more about this new initiative.
McTeague’s bill has student’s endorsement
To the editor:
Re: ‘McTeague bill will only benefit the well-off,’ letter to the
editor, Gary Dale.
Mr. Dale should be reminded that it was his party, the NDP,
that was responsible for depriving students of the Liberal initia-
tive to reduce tuition by 50 per cent in their first and last years of
school. Instead, we have a government that promises an $80 tax
break for textbooks for a segment of the population that rarely
pays tax.
As someone who has run multiple times to be a member of
parliament, Mr. Dale should also be reminded that as a private
member Mr. McTeague is not allowed to put forward money
bills. Thus he would not be allowed to put forward a bill reduc-
ing tuition fees.
Additionally, Mr. Dale should be aware that tax credits are
valued at the lowest tax rate (which would have been 15 per cent
had Mr. McTeague’s party still been in power), not the separate
bracket rates as Mr. Dale has assumed.
The point of Mr. McTeague’s bill is to make the RESP program
more accessible to more people. Mr. Dale should encourage his
party to support the bill and make a note that it is the NDP that
is responsible for students missing out on tuition reductions.
As a student, I appreciate Mr. McTeague’s work and hope that
his bill passes.

Without our prosperity,
we couldn’t help others
U nder an early morning African
sun, a boy stands with grave-like
stillness at the side of a road. In
his hands, he holds a live chicken for sale
to anyone passing. He doesn’t flinch as
it clucks occasionally in his arms, or as
people appear, seemingly out of nowhere,
from the surrounding fields and then
cross the road into some other unseen
place beyond the cornstalks.
In Zambia, a country full of poverty, it
is not too hard to imagine why he stands
there, at the side of the road with the
chicken. He could be an orphan, since
diseases such as HIV-AIDS have killed
many parents. He could be hungry, since
many fathers spend days in the bar drink-
ing instead of providing for their families.
As we stand at the back of a Toyota SUV
eating tea biscuits and drinking tea across
the two-lane road from him, he doesn’t
approach or talk to us -- he just stares
straight ahead at nothing.
Months after returning to Canada from
a Canadian International Development
Agency trip to report on the impacts of aid
in Africa, his image is just as fresh as it was
on that dry, hot February day.
An image we would never experience
in Canada, and that alone is enough rea-
son to justify the immense pride I felt in
being Canadian, more so than guilt or
shame.
Along with illustrating the hardships of
Africans, the adventure demonstrated on
a larger scale what it is to be Canadian:
lucky.
Although the work still needed in Zam-
bia is immeasurable, Canada is part of the
reason it is moving in the right direction.
For a country that doesn’t have as much
to give as a megapower such as the U.S.,
Canada is sure leaving its mark on the
lives of people less-fortunate than many
inside its borders. The contribution of
churches, farmers, students and donors
across Durham Region and Canada can
be seen in the smiles of the children able
to go to a community school, in the eyes
of a farmer able to feed and send his
family to school, and in the strength of a
medicated AIDS patient giving back to the
program that helped him.
We should feel proud and appreciative,
not sad or ashamed of the lives we have
here in Canada. If Canada hadn’t come
as far as it has and hadn’t been so suc-
cessful, our country would be of no use to
Africa because it wouldn’t have anything
to teach or to give.

Every year the cycle is repeated. After a summer
spent chasing butterfl ies, swimming, working or
just plain lazing about, Labour Day rolls around
and hundreds of thousands of students fi le back
into their schools - ready for a new year. Or are
they?
A teacher friend of mine tells me that, “We have
to allow at least a month for everyone to get settled
and back in a learning mood.” That puts us into
October and, according to other teachers, many
students are still not refocused and ready to learn by
then. However, according to the same source, “by
mid October most kids are back to speed.”
According to my calculations, this would mean
that from July 1, through at least October 15, many
students are not focused or at their best. “For at
least three and one half months, learning can be
haphazard to say the least.” says Robert Primrose a
Grade 10 teacher.
In fact, it may even be worse than that. Think
about your child’s learning experiences in June each
year. Tests, exams,
fi eld trips and other
events consume
most of that month’s
schedule adding
another month to the
let down period.
Considering that
the average school
year includes only 200
days of instruction and
that many of those
days are spent in less
than ideal conditions,
we soon see why many
schools struggle to
meet the educational
expectations of
parents and society.
W hat can we do to
help? Easy. Help your
kids stay sharp over
the summer holiday
and there will be no
let down - no big
gap in the fall. Kids
who are focused and
ready in September,
will learn, integrate
and understand new
material right away.
This will allow them to make the most of each
school day instead of only half of them.
There are many ways to help kids remain on top
of their school skills. Make sure that your children
read during the summer. Even if they have a busy
social life and a part or full time job, make sure that
they take time each day to read. Set up brief study
periods at least every other day. Times when your
child can review the worst or hardest subjects, read
ahead into next year’s material and organize for next
year.
However, possibly the best way to help students
stay sharp is through Supplemental Education
programs. Good summer programs, such as those
at Oxford Learning Centres, keep those thinking,
reading, writing, math and study skills sharp and
ready for September.
“It’s not so much the memorized material
that students forget over the summer,” says Dr.
Pete Gamlin from U of T’s Ontario
Institute for Studies in Education.
“It’s learning How to Learn that gets forgotten
each summer. That’s because it is seldom taught
independent of school subjects. Students who
develop good learning and thinking skills will be
ready for success in September. Attending a study
session over the summer at Oxford Learning is the
best way I know of overcoming the summer let-
down.”
Oxford Learning is Canada’s leading provider of
supplemental and enrichment education services.
They will design as individualized learning
program for each child to keep them sharp over the
summer and get a head start on next year. Help
your child enjoy learning this summer and return
to school in September with improved skills and
greater confi dence. Don’t delay, call Oxford today

they can help your child get caught up or reach
ahead this summer.

Manresa now a
spiritual renewal centre
PICKERING — In 1949 the Jesuit
Fa thers of Upper Canada purchased a
plot of land and the buildings that were
on it, in Pickering. Here, they estab-
lished the Manresa Retreat, a spiritual
renewal centre.
The chosen property had an 18-
room main house, a second building
with 10 rooms and seven-car garage
and dog kennel. There was also a small
bungalow on the 107-acre property.
In 1912, Lord and Lady Hyde, son
of the Earl of Clarendon, along with
two other English lords purchased the
property and built ClarendonWood.
It was their English estate in Canada,
where they resided until the First World
War forced them back to England. In
1922 Victor Ross, first vice-president of
the Standard Oil Company, expanded
the property and added a lake, a wind-
mill and a formal garden.
In 1945, Charlie Conacher of the
1929 Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team
was the new owner of this property.
Going back to early 1800, John and
Sherwood Palmer settled on this land
and built a stone house that is still
standing.
Manresa is at the top of Liverpool
Road, north of Finch Avenue.

is pleased to welcome Dr. Tim Mandzak to
our team of Health Care Professionals. Dr.
Mandzak’s skills compliment those of our
current team of doctors, nurses, lactation
consultants, massage therapist, perinatal and
healthy lifestyle educators. Chiropractic care
has been identified to relieve many of the
discomforts expectant mothers’ experience.
Often Mothers report that their births were
faster and more comfortable than births prior
to chiropractic care.
Pr ior to our clinic opening, we surveyed
families for the services they used and valued
during pregnancy and early parenthood.
Over 50% of families identified a desire for
complimentary alternative healthcare services
including chiropractic, naturopathy and
massage therapy. Mom and Baby Depot has
succeeded in uniting OHIP based medical
services with complimentary alternative
healthcare and healthy lifestyle programs, all
on one site!
We will soon be joined by Dr. Kathee
Andrews, Family Physician, who will be
providing a weekly Women’s Health Clinic
and some pre-natal care.
On May 27th we invite the community
to drop by for an Open House at our 207
D undas Street West facility in Whitby. The
event is an opportunity to meet our team
including our newest partners Dr. Mandzak
and Dr. Andrews. We will be offering a BBQ
lunch and chair massages for a small fee.
Money raised will be donated to Durham

several of our educational and healthy lifestyle
programs.
Please join us at our Open House! Enjoy

Mike Dahiroc beats London catcher Chad McKellar to home plate off a base hit by Ryan Crotin to score Oshawa’s first run of the game against the London Ma-
jors. It would also be Oshawa’s last run as it lost to the Majors 3-1.
PICKERING — The medal po-
dium was the place to find mem-
bers of the Pickering Athletic
Centre at a recent competition.
Gymnasts from the centre took
part in a meet in East York last
weekend and several returned
with medals.
Jessie Taylor placed first overall
in the level 2 age 8 category, with
golds on the vault and balance
beam, and silvers on the uneven
parallel bars and floor exercises.
In the level 2 age 7 division,
Shemoya Hylton was golden,
thanks to golds on the vault and
bars, and silvers on the beam and
floor. In the same category, but a
separate flight, Stephanie Stiles
also grabbed gold by placing first
on each individual apparatus.
Cassidy Colin grabbed a second
overall, with a gold on the beam
and silvers on the vault, bars and
floor.
In the level 2 age 9 group, Sarah
Harris-Lowe finished second,
with a first on beam, seconds on
vault and bars, and fifth on the
floor. Jennifer Hamlyn took a third
overall placing, with a first on the
beam, second on vault, fifth on
floor and sixth on bars.
Sonia Morais finished third in
the level 2 ages 10-11 category,
with a second on the vault and
beam, third on floor and fourth

Intercounty
club also making
moves off the field
DURHAM — The Oshawa
Dodgers started quickly but soon
fizzled out in Intercounty Baseball
League play Saturday at Kinsmen
Stadium.
After opening up a 1-0 lead on
the London Majors in the first in-
ning, the Dodgers’ bats fell silent
in a 3-1 defeat. Any hope of a
doubleheader split were washed
out by rain, leaving a game to be
rescheduled.
Junior call-up Mike Dahiroc
scored from second on a Ryan
Crotin RBI single to give Oshawa
the early lead.
Dodgers starting pitcher Ben
Chisholm was tagged with the loss,
giving up three runs (two earned)
through 3-2/3 innings. London
tied the game in the third inning
and took the lead for good with
two runs in the fourth.
Ian Okorofsky went 3-1/3 in-
nings of scoreless relief, giving up
two hits while striking out two.
Ryan Crotin ended up with two
of the four Oshawa hits. Darren
Sawyer, another junior call-up,
and Ken Calway had the others.
The Dodgers were busy off the
field, signing right-handed pitcher
Adam Garner. He threw a perfect
game last season with the East
Yo rk Juniors and subsequently
was named Junior pitcher of the
year. This season with Cerro Coso
Community College, Adam led his
team with 97.2 innings pitched
and boasted a 3.41 ERA.
The Dodgers have players from
across Durham Region.
DURHAM — The Team Impact
Wrestling Club, made up of mem-
bers from across Durham Region
continues to dominate the mats of
Ontario -- and beyond.
After delivering impressive re-
sults at the Ontario Novice (U-11)
and Kids Festival (U-13) and On-
tario Bantam (U-15) Champion-
ships in Hagersville, more medals

ELAINE (DE VERE) MINACS
Elaine Minacs passed away in her 61st year on May 17, 2006, at home
surrounded by her family. She died peacefully after a long and courageous
battle with cancer. Elaine was the founder and executive chair of the board of
Minacs Worldwide Inc., headquartered in Toronto. She is survived by her
husband Julius Minacs, daughter Andrea Minacs, brother John DeVere and his
wife Janis, sister Yvonne Agueci and her husband Frank, sister Michelle Allen
and her husband Chris, sister Mandy DeVere, Aunt Maureen Warner (of North-
olt, Middlesex) and numerous nieces and nephews. Elaine Minacs was born on
March 8, 1945, in South Harrow, England. (She became a Canadian citizen
years later.) She was the oldest child of John DeVere and his wife Margaret
Fleming. From the age of 18, Elaine lived with family friends in Oshawa and
worked at General Motors until her marriage to Julius Minacs in 1965. On
March 12, 1973, Elaine and Julius welcomed daughter Andrea Elaine to the
family. In September 1981, after Andrea started school, Elaine founded her
own company, which was housed in the original Minacs home at 65 Albert
Street in Oshawa. Originally a temporary staffing company, Minacs Worldwide,
has enjoyed 25 years of continuous growth and now employs approximately
5,000 people, with offices in 20 locations in Canada, the United States, and
Europe. Elaine transformed her company into an internationally-recognized
organization that provides high-value BPO solutions centered on three core
areas of service: contact centres, integrated market services, and back office
administration. In 1999, she took the company from a privately-held corporation
reporting revenues of $35.9 million in 1998, to a publicly-traded company
(TSX: MXW) with reported revenues of $290.5 million in 2005. Over the years,
Elaine's entrepreneurial skills have been nationally recognized at both the
corporate and personal levels. Minacs has received numerous awards for its
industry leadership and business success. Among these are: General Motors
2002 Supplier of the Year; YWCA of Greater Toronto 2002 Woman of
Distinction for Entrepreneurship; Ernst and Young 2001 Entrepreneur of the
Year; Canadian Professional Sales Association Hall of Fame 2001 Diamond
Award for commitment, community involvement and generous charitable
contributions; and 1993 Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year for Quality.
A strong supporter of children's charities, she was a past member of the Board
of Directors of Kids' Help Phone. She has also been the recipient of a number
of business excellence awards from the Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and
the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade. Elaine was best known for her unfaltering
spirit and entrepreneurial drive. She identified new markets where the company
could grow and succeed. She faced challenges head-on and welcomed new
opportunities to take Minacs into uncharted territory. Resting at the
ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME, 124 King Street East, Oshawa
905-433-4711. With visitation on Monday May 22nd and Tuesday May 23rd,
from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. There will also be visitation on Thursday May 25th from

CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Ave., Toronto 416-487-4523. A funeral service will be
held at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, 230 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto on
Fr iday May 26th at 11a.m. Condolences and words for the family may be sent
to RememberingElaine@minacs.com.The family has requested that any do-
nations made in Elaine's memory be made to her favourite charities: In

Change does a home
good. But it doesn’t have to
be expensive. A new counter-
top, kitchen cupboards, bath-
room vanity, they can make a
world of difference and trans-
form your house into a dream
home.
The professionals at
Countertop King are special-
ists in kitchen and bathroom
makeovers.
Owners Jim Darroch and
Rick Brunatti along with Sales
Manager Lori Danks invite you to
visit their showroom at 370 Mon-
arch Ave. #17 in Ajax and take
the fi rst step in beautifying your
home.
“When it comes to counter-
tops we have the best selection
around,” says Rick, “There are
thousands of colours including 500
stock colours to choose from in a
wide variety of textures with many
looking and feeling like granite
and marble without the expense of
the real thing.”
Come in and see and feel for
yourself. Take your time and ask
for advice on what would look
good in your home.
Once you make your selec-
tion, Jim or Rick will come to your
home and measure the area in your
kitchen for the perfect fi t. Each
installation takes no more than a
day and is done personally by Jim
and Rick. They will cut the hole
for your sink and install it on top
of the countertop or recess it under
the countertop with a Corian
ring. Check out the cutaway
example in the showroom for
a closer look at this very styl-
ish choice of installation.
“We can also install the
plumbing and new taps along
with the sink,” says Jim. “Your
kitchen will look like new again.”
Countertop King also does
kitchen cabinetry refacing with
new doors and hardware or they
can do a complete set of kitchen
cabinets for you.
The bathroom is also a spe-
cialty. Just ask about installing a
new vanity in this very important
room in your house.
