Meanwhile, Phillip Fernan- dez, who taught at St. Margue- rite d’Youville Catholic School in Whitby at the time of his arrest in the fall of 2003, has been fired, according to the Durham Catho- lic District School Board. Mr. Fernandez, who was 37 years old when he was arrested, was relieved of classroom duties immediately when charges were laid by Durham Regional Police officers. Mr. Fernandez was convict- ed in February after a Superior Court jury trial in Whitby. At a hearing Monday Crown counsel Kent Saliwonchyk called for a four-year penitentiary sen- tence, asking a judge to reject a defence submission recom- mending a term of house arrest. Away almost half the time, Paul Bannister says he ‘has a lot of other responsibilities’ By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer PICKERING — While some Catholic trustees hardly missed a meeting last year, a Pickering trustee missed almost half deal- ing with board business. A report on trustee attendance at Monday’s Durham Catholic District School Board meeting showed Pickering Trustee Paul Bannister missed all but one of eight policy committee meetings, all 10 of the special-education ad- visory committee meetings, his only finance committee meeting, eight of 17 expulsion committee meetings and 11 of 40 regular, special and in-camera board meetings. “Someone like myself has a lot of other responsibilities as well... it’s like a trade-off,” said Trustee Bannister in an interview. He said he has a young family and busy job, causing him to miss many meetings, but still does a lot of things in the community in his role as a trustee. “A lot of it goes unrecognized,” he said. Board chairman, Mary Ann Martin, said trustees cannot miss three regular board meetings in a row under the Education Act or they can be removed from their position. “When it comes to committee meetings, there isn’t any rules per se, for attending them,” she said. Trustee Martin added three board members sit on each com- mittee and at least two have to be present to form a quorum. Pickering trustee defends missed meetings ✦ Time for trustee to commit to job or step aside Editorial Page 6 ✦ See Girl, Page 4 ✦ See Trustees, Page 4 Victim’s house part of probe of December killing By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — Local police are refusing to comment on published reports that investigators were tail- ing members of the Bandidos biker gang in the hours before eight of them were executed last weekend. “We don’t have anything to say about that,” Durham Regional Po- lice Sergeant Paul McCurbin said Wednesday morning, following media reports. “We don’t comment on ongoing investigations and what our police tactics are.” Media outlets reported that po- lice tailed three members of the gang from the GTA to a rural loca- tion near St. Thomas Friday night. The Star reported Durham drug of- ficers were investigating the three men; the Sun said a number of the bikers were part of the continuing investigation into the December 2005 death of Keswick man Shawn Douse, whose beaten body was found in a Pickering field. Sgt. McCurbin said the inves- tigation into the murders of the eight bikers is being conducted by Ontario Provincial Police, who quickly arrested five people for first-degree murder. There has been a Durham presence during the investigation -- Durham cops staked out the Keswick home of massacre victim Jamie Flanz and Tuesday executed a search warrant there -- because of the ongoing probe into the death of Mr. Douse, Sgt. McCurbin said. “The only thing we’re doing at that (Keswick) location is inves- tigating the Douse homicide,” he said. “We know Douse is connect- ed to that residence in some shape or form.” Homicide investigators have been careful to point out that the 37-year-old Mr. Flanz, described as an associate of the Bandidos gang, was not considered a sus- pect, but that his Keswick town- house is being looked at as a place of interest in the Douse murder case. It was searched once before by Durham homicide cops. The 35-year-old father of two, who is known to police and had drug connections, disappeared from Keswick Dec. 6. His badly beaten body was found two days later in a woodlot north of Con- cession 7, just east of the York- Durham Line. Dental records were used to confirm his identity. Durham police recently stepped up their investigation of the killing, conducting ground searches of the area in which the body was found as the snows of winter receded and making appeals in the press for tips. City council adopted a motion in the fall to declare Pickering a True Sport com- munity and has already been recognized for its efforts. True Sport is a national movement committed to the belief that sport makes a pow- erful and positive contribu- tion to the development of people and communities. Its values are inclusion, fairness, excellence and fun. Ward 2 Regional Council- lor Bill McLean introduced the motion. He said City staff has been out to organizations to let them know about the movement. Part of the goal is to keep sports fun and en- courage longer participation for young people. “I am concerned that ap- proximately 75 per cent of kids leave organized sports at the age of 13 because it’s just not fun anymore,” he said. “It’s important that we en- courage our youth to stay in- volved in organized sports, as it will help them develop positive values now and into adulthood.” Being a True Sport commu- nity means following guide- lines not only for players, but also referees, coaches and parents. The guidelines speak to being respectful and play- ing fairly. “Even looking back at my- self playing amateur sports the worst thing you can have is a parent yelling, not words of encouragement, but making a fool of themselves yelling at the coaches or players,” Coun. McLean said. “That takes away from the fun of it.” In addition to reaching out to soccer, hockey and baseball organizations, they’re also reaching out to schools. But Coun. McLean added, they’re not just trying to reach young people. “You’re never too old to get into the concept of playing fairly,” he said. On March 31, Pickering was one of three municipali- ties across Canada to receive the Bell True Sport Commu- nity Award, which is given to communities that use sport to unite and develop their com- munity. The honour comes with a $10,000 grant. Coun. McLean said a deci- sion on how to use that money hasn’t been made yet, but he will be bringing a motion to council in the future. “I’d like to see that go to- wards kids that can’t afford registration fees or equipment, to get them into the program,” he said. When trustees frequently miss meetings, it puts the onus on other committee members to be there, she said. “If you’re going to take on the role of trustee... it is your re- sponsibility, your duty to attend the meeting and get involved in the busi- ness side of the board,” said Trustee Martin. Trustees Jim McCafferty and Janice Oldman, from Pickering and Ajax, respectively, had per- fect attendance for the 40 board meetings; chairwoman Mary Ann Mar tin and Trustee Scott Mur- dock, both representing Whitby, missed two meetings apiece; co- chairman Joe Corey of Oshawa, missed four; Scugog Trustee Kathy LeFort, nine; and Oshawa Trustee Fred Jones, 10. Trustee McCafferty had perfect attendance at policy committee, while Trustee Murdock missed two meetings. Trustee McCafferty’s atten- dance was also perfect at the 10 special-education advisory com- mittee meetings. For the finance committee’s one meeting in November, Trustee Corey was the only one to attend; Trustee Murdock, its chairman, was absent along with Trustee Bannister. In politics, batting .500 should have you thinking about a career change. And that is exactly where Durham Catholic District School Board Trustee Paul Bannister should find himself these days. According to numbers released this week by the board, the Pickering representative missed 37 of 76 board and committee meetings in 2005 -- an atrocious record by any standard. From his failure to attend any of the 10 meetings of the board’s special education advisory committee, of which he is a member, to his one-for-eight at policy committee, the trustee’s truancy runs throughout all the duties he agreed to take on when run- ning for election. Keep in mind, too, that board committees are generally manned by two or three trustees at most, meaning political representation and advocacy continues to suffer on the committees of which he is a member. His defence? He’s busy with a young family and a job, but he’s responsive in the com- munity. He contends a lot of his work goes unrecognized. Many elected officials across Durham struggle with the de- mands of family life and a busy schedule, yet understand that as elected officials they are expected to earn the tax dollars they are paid. That goes for anyone in Pickering with a job, family and other commitments -- life makes many demands, but respon- sible adults understand commitments must be met. Political life is an incredibly open profession, the job expectations are well- documented for anyone running for office, including Trustee Bannister. Trustee Bannister’s term is on its last legs, with just over six months until the municipal election. He must either renew his commitment to the board and students or step aside if he can’t handle the job. Pickering residents deserve an effective voice in Catholic education, not someone making occasional appear- ances while collecting a paycheque. Pickering supports arts centre To the editor: Recently, the News Advertiser has devoted much print space to the Durham West Arts Centre (DWAC). I wish to reinforce and expand upon some of the statements made. While it is important to cultivate our individual arts com- munities, it only makes sense to pool our resources and efforts so that we may achieve greater success. As stated in your newspaper, art is universal and knows no boundaries. I believe DWAC is the best vehicle to nurture, support and promote the artistic talents in both Pickering and Ajax. Ye s, Pickering council did approve $25,000 in funding to DWAC with no strings attached. While it is less than what was requested, it clearly demonstrates our unyielding commit- ment to the arts -- notwithstanding our lack of development revenues and the challenge of presenting an equitable and fair municipal budget. In other words, we had to search high and low for cost savings in other areas, just to maintain our existing level of funding to DWAC. As our municipalities mature, it is clear that we need a permanent arts facility here in west Durham. Our local art- ists need a place to call home, take root and flourish. I have already made a pledge to DWAC that $50,000 from this year’s Pickering Mayor’s Gala will go towards the future construc- tion of such a facility. We still have a long way to go. However, if we each commit to realizing this shared vision, the Durham West Arts Centre will become the cornerstone of Pickering and Ajax’s arts and cultural landscape. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com S ports Illustrated has a small, regu- lar item in the magazine entitled ‘Sign that the apocalypse is upon us’ which is replete with something enig- matic, yet dark, that has occurred in the world of sports. The item usually elicits a scratch of one’s head, followed by a ‘could this pos- sibly be true?’ query. Unfortunately, it is. Something akin to this came to my desk in the form of an unsolicited e-mail from one of those Internet off-shore wa- gering outfits. And, its content certainly fits the bill of a signal that, yes, the apoca- lypse may well be upon us. It was as weird as it was disgusting. It takes the whole realm of sports wagering to an all-new low. Yo u can be the judge. The sports book, WagerWeb.com, is getting in on the action regarding the sordid saga emanating from Duke Uni- versity in North Carolina where, it’s al- leged, members of that school’s men’s field lacrosse team beat and raped a black prostitute during a party at a house where several members of the team live. The ugly and getting uglier by the minute situation is a divisive one in the Raleigh- Durham community and is also generat- ing news across the U.S. and beyond. Here’s where the sports book comes in. It’s lauding the fact that it is now tak- ing bets on the number of DNA matches the police investigators will make with members of the Duke lacrosse team. Apparently, investigators have taken 46 samples from players and the results are expected within weeks. “Sports betting is not limited to wager- ing only on games, player performance or season outcome,” proudly crows Dave Johnson, WagerWeb.com CEO, in an e- mail news release. “Our customers and sports fans alike come to our site to bet on issues surrounding the sports world as well.” Ye s, if you placed a $100 wager on all 46 matches, you stand to cart away $7,500. Wa gering on DNA tests associated with a rape case? Do these people have no shame? Placing bets on a degrading situ- ation like this goes well beyond the pall. But, then again, making money on the backs of the unfortunate makes that big wheel go ’round. Gambling is big business everywhere, including in Durham Region, where people are currently lining up and filling up the slots over at Picov’s in Ajax and everyone, including the Town of Ajax, is standing in line for their share of the booty. While throwing a coin in a slot ma- chine might not be a harbinger of the apocalypse, gambling in the extreme -- like taking bets on the outcome of a rape case -- is nonetheless an undeniable sign that all’s not well in today’s society. Along with giving school boards the ability to adjust trustee salaries, the pro- posed Student Performance Bill would include providing more on-the-job learning and mentoring as the second step in new teacher training, and the ability to change maxi- mum class size regulations and add more professional development days for teach- er training. The legislation would make amendments to the Education and the On- tario College of Teacher acts. “A nything for teacher training, I’m for it,” said Oshawa Trustee Mike Barrett, the Durham District School Board chairman. He said often on the week- ends, teachers are at the board head- quarters taking ad- vantage of devel- opment courses. Regarding classroom cap size regulations, he said they’re good, but also upset infrastructure requirements. “These are all positive moves,” said Trustee Bar- rett. “The only issue we have always is, here’s the vision, implementation is a little scarce and where’s the funding?” said Mr. Barrett. Items listed in the proposed leg- islation are all is- sues advocated for by teachers, boards and stu- dent associations, he said. Whitby Trustee Mary Ann Martin, chairman of the Durham Catholic District School Board, shared similar feelings. “Overall, what I’ve seen, it seems to be going in the right direction,” said Trustee Mar- tin. “The most appealing thing to me is the PA Days and the teacher mentoring, I think that’s really important,” she said. “Whatever changes are made, it’s also extremely important to provide the funding to implement these things. It’s a great idea, but show me the money.” The legislation would also empower student trustees through things such as non- binding votes and new pro- cedural rights. “It might be giving them a lot more than they can han- dle,” said Trustee Martin. SciTech lecture is all relative Mary Ann Martin By Charles McGregor Special to the News Advertiser DURHAM — The man who would be premier of Ontario, John Tory, has his own take on the recently released $100,000 salary list. “There are 20 per cent more people inside the public sector of Ontario making more than $100,000 this year than at the same time last year. “Why is it that we think the government of Ontario can afford to do this? Because there’s a culture inside the current government that says the businesses and people of Ontario are like an ATM machine. When you run out of money, you just go and push a few buttons and more comes.” Mr. Tory, the leader of Ontario’s Conservative party, told members of the Greater Oshawa Cham- ber of Commerce last week that he feels the Province is focusing too much on spending. “The government measures its progress on how much it spends and that if you’re spending more, things must be better. I just don’t happen to agree with that. What is the most disconcerting thing to me -- and to you -- is that we are paying more and getting less,” he said. The party leader received warm applause when he said that, with respect to the Region of Durham, “I don’t think the decision makers in Toronto have any idea as to the degree of growth that has taken place out here and how that has impacted on ser- vices -- and I mean in a negative way. The number of lanes passing through the west end of the city on the 401 is four or five times the number of lanes passing through this end of the GTA and you have to ask yourself, ‘Why is that?’” He regards Durham as “an area of the province which has huge opportunity,” where, “there’s been a lot of growth take place over the last number of years.” Mr. Tory also said he’s pledged to rectify health care inequities and ensure that transportation infra- structure improves in this area -- “because if it isn’t already having a negative effect on the economy and on people’s family lives, it soon will.” On the hospital front, Mr. Tory said, “Not only is it a matter of capital funding it’s also a matter of results. Because of decreasing enrolment at the school, as well as the board’s prac- tise to approve most out-of-boundary requests, Durham Catholic District School Board staff will be following its Exceptions to School Attendance Areas Policy when approving outside boundary requests to attend St. Patrick’s. According to a memorandum on the April 10 board meeting agenda, enrolment at St. Patrick’s has gone from 986 in Oc- tober 2001, to 833 in October 2005. It is projected to decrease to 633 by 2009. Work continues DURHAM — Work is coming along at Catholic schools in Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax. An April 10, progress report on build- ing in the Durham Catholic District School Board system provided an update on the work being done at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Oshawa, St. Bridget in Whitby and Brother Andre in Ajax. At St. Joseph’s, most of the deficien- cies were completed by Feb. 17. Sod on the playing field will be installed in spring and the contractor is still maintaining a temporary fence around the field, free of charge, until the sod can be placed. St. Bridget’s deficiencies have been completed and warranty work continues, such as for a flash leak that will be done when weather permits. At Brother Andre, most of the deficiencies were completed by the contractor on Feb. 17, and the fold- ing gym partition was installed. A second ground depression has recently appeared, and the architect has been advised to di- rect remedial action for spring. A new mission DURHAM — Durham’s Catholic school board is working on a new, shorter mission statement. Presented at the April 10 board meet- ing, the proposed statement reads: “As followers of Jesus, the Durham Catholic District School Board is a learning com- munity committed to educating students to reach their God-given talent for the good of others in faith, hope and love.” Calling it “terrific,” Scugog Trustee Kathy LeFort added it’s much easier to re- member. The proposed statement will be circulated throughout the school board system for comment. Education in brief APRIL 14, 2006 Durham wants to know why problems continue By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — Rotary Beach sported no swim- ming signs for 96 per cent of last year’s bathing sea- son and Durham’s health and social services commit- tee wants to know why. The commit- tee has directed regional staff to find out what is happening at the Ajax beach, what factors are con- tributing to the poor water quality and to come up with rec- ommendations on how to proceed. “Have you ever tested the (Duffin) Creek to see what is coming down there?” re- gional Chairman Roger An- derson asked Ken Gorman at the April 5 committee meeting. Mr. Gorman, the Region’s director of environmental health, was at the meeting to give an overview of the health department’s beach management program. “You look at where Duf- fin Creek is and where the beach is,” Mr. Anderson said. “I would like that creek tested. It might eliminate or identify a source.” Rotary Beach has a dismal track record of water qual- ity. In the past five years, the beach has been closed to swimmers an average of 80 per cent of the time. Mr. Anderson said he was not speculating as to the source, but said the Region needs to deter- mine what that source is and fix it or close the beach. Under the Health Ministry’s safe water pro- gram, the Region must monitor, survey and sample the safety of public beaches. According to Ajax Coun- cillor Colleen Jordan, Rotary Beach has one of the worst water quality records across the Greater Toronto Area and is certainly the worst among the public beaches in Durham Region. There are 15 public beaches in Durham Region, the bulk of them along Lake Ontario. A minimum of five sam- ples are taken weekly at each beach. Based on the geometric mean of the five samples, if the E. coli count is more than 100 per 100 millilitres of water, signs are posted warning people not to swim. According to Mr. Gor- man, there are a number of factors that influence beach water quality, including commercial liquid waste, surface runoff, sewage treat- ment, waterfowl, rainfall in- tensity and bathing loads. Alex Connor, in an inter- view, agreed and added the process of sampling Dur- ham Region beaches is reli- able. There is no fear of swim- ming in area beaches ac- cording to Mr. Connor, a manager with the Region’s environmental health de- partment. Although Rotary Beach has the highest per- centage of postings in the past five years, followed by Kinsman Beach in Port Perry and then Beaverton Beach South, he said one is not safer than another so long as they are not posted. “G enerally we like to see the beaches free of con- tamination all year round but that is not the case,” Mr. Connor said. “You really have to rely on our sampling process.” John Presta, director of environmental services, gave a presentation to the committee about the envi- ronmental assessment for additional plant capacity at the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP), which is west of Rotary Beach. He said it’s his opinion that the frequent postings at Rotary Beach are in no way rooted at the plant. He cited rainfall and bird populations as possible sources of the increased levels of E. coli. Mr. Presta said the Duf- fin Creek WPCP provides efficient treatment and dis- charges a high-quality ef- fluent to Lake Ontario one kilometre off-shore. The plant operates under a certificate of approval granted by the Ministry of Environment, which has compliance requirements to protect the environment. East shore residents meet for annual business Pickering s eniors head to paradise By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — A small, but dedicated group came to Pickering Monday to edu- cate people about a camp in China that they say is harvesting organs. Cathy Liu took the day off work to be a part of the SOS Car Tour to condemn the organ harvest camp in China. Two witnesses came forward to international media outlets in March with reports that organs are being taken from live Falun Gong practitioners being held at a state- run camp called Sujiatun. “We’re here to educate people,” Ms. Liu said before making a speech in front of the Pickering Civic Complex, while two other volunteers held a banner and one gave out flyers to people passing by. “We call on the Canadian government and all kind-hearted Canadian people to help stop the state-run genocide in China,” she said through a megaphone. “These kind of mass killings are a chal- lenge to the basic human nature of us all... If we know and choose to do noth- ing we are accepting in our silence.” Ms. Liu, who practices Falun Gong herself, said she wanted to do something when she learned what was happening. “When we first heard the news we felt this kind of thing is not acceptable. It is a challenge to our human nature,” she said. “We wanted to try to do some- thing.” The tour also included stops in Toron- to and Oshawa and a visit to the offices of local MPs and MPPs. Not just believing in God, as the name im- plies, but believ- ing that a party on the fringes of Canada’s politi- cal landscape will one day win seats in Parliament and maybe even form a government. This was one of the themes party leader Ron Gray emphasized during a visit to Oshawa to touch base with party members and get them thinking about strategies for the next election. Their goal is to run a full slate of candidates across Canada. Mr. Gray has been lead- ing the CHP since 1995, and is confident he can pull off a candidate in every rid- ing, especially considering the recent wave of support the party has seen. He said people have been turning to the CHP in large numbers since the Conservative party held its policy convention in Mon- treal and angered a lot of right-wing voters by refus- ing to support any legisla- tion on abortion. “For people who are pro- life in their orientation, who had put their hopes in the new Conser- vative party, this was a slap in the face,” Mr. Gray said. “Now, they are turning to us.” That’s what happened to Tim Young, an Ajax resident who had never heard of the CHP before this year’s fed- eral election. He saw Ajax/ Pickering CHP candidate Kevin Norng speak at a de- bate and was intrigued by the party’s platform. “I was excited because it’s something different,” he said. “There isn’t a lot of difference between the Liberals and the Conser- vatives when you get right down to the foundation and it seems like we just cycle between them every few years.” Mr. Young voted CHP and after the election began rallying other sup- porters to form an elec- toral district association (EDA) for the riding. He is now vice-presi- dent of the EDA and is busy reaching out to new members and raising the party’s profile in Ajax and Pickering. While the CHP has been around since 1987, its pres- ence in Durham Region has been sporadic. The Durham riding that now encompasses Clarington, Uxbridge and Scugog has consistently had a candi- date over the years, while other areas have rarely seen a CHP name on the ballot. Phin Public School Monsignor Philip Coffey Catholic School Donald A. Wilson Secondary School John M. James Public School Principal had the magic touch PICKERING — One of Ontario’s first female principals, Elizabeth B. Phin, headed up the school, now named in her honour, for 17 years. In 1939, plans began to form a new school, originally named R ouge Hill Public School, but later renamed to recognize Mrs. Phin’s half-century of service to education. She introduced the continuous progress system of learning, in which students were recognized for their own cogni- tive ability and pace to learn, and was an advocate for regular progress reports for each stu- dent. Retired teachers who worked with Mrs. Phin have returned to the school to supply teach and describe her as a principal with the magic touch. She knew each student and staff mem- ber by name, had a wonderful rapport with parents and was a no-nonsense woman who wore her heart on her sleeve. The school’s current principal, Brian Jones, has been told by colleagues who remember Mrs. Phin that if someone was willing to try, she would back them up completely. They added she was no softy and had no time for sympathy for parents who didn’t care about their child’s progress at school, or for disin- terested students. Information supplied by school officials. His death ended an impressive era of church expansion in south Oshawa OSHAWA — Monsignor Philip Coffey came to Oshawa to help build a church, but ended up accomplishing much more. Born in 1898, Monsignor Coffey ar- rived in Oshawa in 1939 after spend- ing two years in Uxbridge as pastor of St. John’s. His mission in Oshawa was to raise money to build a new church and by the end of 1940, Holy Cross Catholic Church was compete and Monsignor Coffey was appointed its permanent priest. The church was the second Roman Catholic Church built in Oshawa. During his 24 years in the munici- pality, he spent 20 as a separate school representative on the Durham Board of Education. In 1961, he was elevated to the rank of Domestic Prelate -- Monsignor. Along with being involved in educa- tion and the church, Monsignor Coffey was also well-known in the sports com- munity, as he sometimes sought refuge from his arduous church duties as a sports competitor and spectator. He was a familiar figure on the fairways of the Oshawa Golf Club and skipped a winning team at the Oshawa Curling Club shortly before he died. His death in 1963 ended an impres- sive era of church expansion in south Oshawa. Thanks to his drive and dedi- cation, such buildings as Holy Cross Catholic School, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Monsignor Philip Coffey Cath- olic School and St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church were built. Bowmanville man contributed much CLARINGTON — During his lifetime, John Mason James was a soldier, a mem- ber of Parliament and publisher of the Canadian Statesman. Born in Bowmanville, Jan. 17, 1911, Mr. James contributed to his town, com- munity and country. As a young man in 1939, he joined the Midland Regiment and was a captain in the Intelligence Corps. of Canada through which he served in Canada, England, Italy, France, Belgium and the Nether- lands. In 1945, he received an honor- ary discharge. From 1949 to 1957, Mr. James served as member of Parliament in Ottawa representing the Durham Rid- ing. He was also a member of the Delega- tion of Canada at the United Nations. In 1947, he purchased his mother’s share of ‘The Canadian Statesman’ news- paper and in 1957, became its sole owner when he bought his Uncle George’s por- tion. During his reign at the paper, from 1957 to 1999, he received the ‘Golden Quill’ award for 50 years in the news- paper business and was also awarded a Canadian Community Newspaper Asso- ciation Honorary Life Membership. The newspaper is now published by the Met- roland Durham Region Media Group. Mr. James was a valued member of the Masonic Lodge and Rotary Club. He received the Rotary Club’s ‘Paul Harris’ award for outstanding service to his com- munity. In 1999, Mr. James died. Named in his honour, John M. James opened in Janu- ary 2000. Wilson was busy in the community. Born in Whitby on June 23, 1891, Mr. Wilson spent more than 25 years as a trustee and in 1935, became chairman of the Whitby Board of Education. In 1953, he became the first chairman of the Whitby District High School Board. He was also chairman of the building committee for the new Whitby District High School, now Henry Street High School, when it was built in 1953-54 and enlarged in 1957. Mr. Wilson was one of the prime mov- ers in the construction of the Whitby Community Arena, raising funds for its construction and serving as secretary- treasurer of the Whitby Community Arena Board. During Mr. Wilson’s life, he was a founding member of the Whitby Cham- ber of Commerce in 1928; a member of the Whitby Junior hockey team when it won the Ontario championship in 1909; a partner in Whitby Motors Ltd.; director of the Whitby Dunlops Hockey Club and went to Oslo, Norway when the ‘Dunnies’ won the world hockey championship; was the first winner of the prestigious Peter Perry Award for being the commu- nity’s most outstanding person in 1955; and a recipient of an Ontario Bicenten- nial Medal in 1984. Parisotto, an Ajax resident, spent 10 days in the country, touring and conducting two concerts with the Lebanese National Symphony Orchestra during the Al Bustan International Festival of Music and the Arts in Beirut. “It’s one of the biggest festivals of clas- sical music in the Middle East,” he said. “I was invited to go there and close their festival with two concerts at the end of March.” The month-long festival, an annual event, featured musicians from around the world, including Austria, Russia and Poland. Parisotto was asked to take part by the Canadian government as part of a cultural program. He conducted the orchestra, es- tablished in the late 1990s, along with guest soloists Kirill Troussov and Massimo Mercelli. “It was really nice. It’s a quality festival,” he said, adding he was pleased to hear the quality of the Lebanese orchestra. Parisotto said the festival has attracted top international musicians including vio- linist Guidon Kremer and pianist Boris Berezovsky. The orchestra and the festival are part of a massive rebuilding of Beirut, the capital city, and Lebanon, which suffered through a brutal civil war in the late 70s through to the late 80s. While in Beirut, Parisotto also explored the capital city and some of the surround- ing area of Lebanon. Much restoration work has been done to Beirut, once re- ferred to as the Paris of the East. “Obviously it’s been a long road for them, from their war in the 80s. I saw some bullet holes in some buildings. They are rebuild- ing the place.” Parisotto said the city has a very interna- tional, cosmopolitan atmosphere to it. In the past, he has represented Canada at events in Shanghai, which led to him being conductor of an orchestra there, Romania and Mexico. Now back in Canada, Parisotto is pre- paring for the ODSO’s May 13 concert with singer Michael Hope, who will perform a tribute to Frank Sinatra. He’s advising people who want to go to get their tickets now. Last year’s concert with Hope sold out, with more than 250 people turned away. In the semifinal, the Lions scored a 75-45 victory over the Mississauga Marauders. Ryan Brown provided the Ajacians with a 24-point performance. Plummer recorded 16 points. The Lions started tournament action Saturday with a bang, crushing the York Avengers 80- 38. Plummer led the way with a 16-point effort, followed by Brown with 12. Rock look to be bigger, meaner Senior ‘B’ lacrosse team opens camp in Ajax Saturday By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — Paul St. John is serv- ing notice to other Ontario Lacrosse Association senior ‘B’ lacrosse teams: the new Ajax-Pickering Rock won’t be anything like the old Rock. “There’s going to be a different attitude and we’re going to play dif- ferently than we have in the past,” states the Rock head coach and gen- eral manager as the team prepares to open training camp tomorrow (Saturday) at the Village Arena in Ajax. “We’re going to be more feisty than we have in the past. We want to be a team to be reckoned with in all areas. The last couple of years, we’ve turned a blind eye (to intimidation by other teams). We won’t be in- timidated. If you’re going to push us around, we’re going to push back.” To ward that stated goal, St. John says he’s looking for bigger, more physical players from the 25 to 35 players who’ll be at camp Saturday. Many of those players, he admits, will be returnees from a season ago. Chief among the returnee is cap- tain Jim Veltman, who’ll return for a third season with the Rock, follow- ing another all-star campaign with the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League. The perennial pro all-star, known as ‘Scoop’, will be joined by his brother, John Veltman, on the Ajax-Pickering squad. Another set of brothers, Shawn and Jeff Summerfield, will also suit up with the Rock. Shawn is coming off his first pro season with the Min- nesota Swarm, which also employs St. John as an assistant coach. The Rock also welcomes back Mark Craig, the team’s leading scor- er from a season ago, along with promising rookies Todd Hollins- head and Aaron Binstock, who’ve also signed on to join the team for their sophomore seasons. The goaltending void -- created after former starter Jay Preece elect- ed to play in Nanaimo, B.C. this summer -- will be filled by Edmon- ton Rush pro goalie Pat Campbell. “We wish Jay well, but Pat Camp- bell is coming in to replace him and we feel very confident in his abili- ties,” says St. John, adding last year’s backup netminder, Dave Power, will return to the Rock this season. Others expected back in the Rock fold include Kevin Taylor, Bill McLean and Frank Littlejohn, who may be late joining the team due to a pro hockey commitment. The Rock also picked up three players in the recent league dispersal draft in London from the defending league champion Kitchener-Water- loo Kodiaks. The Kodiak ownership bought the former St. Catharines Major Series franchise and has re- located it to Kitchener-Waterloo. The Rock drafted Mike Daley, Chris Stewart and goaltender Steve ‘Chugger’ Dietrich, but only Daley is confirmed to play with the Rock this season. Dietrich has made it known he intends to play with the Major Series’ Brooklin Redmen this summer and St. John’s been unable to contact Stewart since the draft. With the loss of the Kodiaks, the senior ‘B’ league will drop to seven teams with the Rock, the S.E.L. Shamrocks (Ennismore) and the Brooklin Merchants playing in the East Division, with the Mohawk Stars, the Wellington Aces (former- ly Arthur), St. Clair Storm and the Owen Sound Woodsmen playing in the West Division. Camp continues for the Rock next Tuesday and Thursday at the Ajax Community Centre, and will resume for the final two days next Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23. She served as an executive member on the Council for Exceptional Children-Chapter 584 for many years, advocating for children with special needs. Her goal in life was to give the best education possible to all children. Maureen was chosen by her colleagues to receive the Distinguished Catholic Leader Award in May 2005 from the Durham Catholic District School Board because of her exceptional leadership skills. She lovingly shared her gift of music as accompanist for Durham Catholic District School Board, GraceNotes Choir and the Principal Choir. Maureen was also the organist at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Oshawa. Her devotion to God sustained her throughout her life.
