Email: service@pickeringhonda.com Students set to work overtime By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — Oshawa and Ajax are getting more space for secondary school students. As part of the Durham District School Board’s almost $50 million in- terim secondary school accommoda- tion plan, north Oshawa is in line for a new high school and Ajax’s Pickering High School a 26-class expansion. The projects will be financed with a $35-million, long-term debt as well as capital building grants and money acquired by selling property. “I’m very pleased; I think this is going to be good for the region, great for Oshawa, great for Ajax/Pickering,” said Whitby Trustee John Dolstra at the board’s March 20 meeting. Jack Massie, superintendent of facil- ities services, said it’s hoped site plan drawings will be presented to trustees before the summer recess and con- struction can start in early fall. In Ajax, there are three secondary schools with a total ministry-rated capacity of 3,840 students, and 4,633 currently enrolled - projected to in- crease to 5,230 by 2010. The Pickering High School expansion will include 26 rooms, a cafeteria, library and gym for $20 million, and increase the school’s ministry-rated capacity from 1,080 to 1,480. Construction is to be phased in over two years and will help relieve pressures at J. Clarke Richardson Col- legiate. “I’m extremely grateful,” said Ajax Wa rds 1 and 2 Trustee Marilyn Craw- ford. She added the community has been asking for renovations to the school for the last three years and thanks to the high enrolment in the area, the board has good reason to fix it up and add more classrooms. Local OPSEU vice president is hopeful faculty will be back by Monday By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — As a college faculty strike enters its third week, exam week has been cancelled and some Durham College students could have their year pushed into May. On Monday night, March 20, DC students were e-mailed general plans for how time would be made up once Ontario’s college teachers return to work. “We are continuing to work on a program-by-program basis on the real fine details,” said Judy Moretton, vice president of academics at DC. She said the school would work with faculty when they return to finalize plans that will have additional hours added to the remaining weeks. “We have alerted students, in order to meet their outcome, they may have to go into May,” said Ms. Moretton. She added the college would work with students unable to continue into May to help them finish sooner. Finan- cial advisors would be available to help students impacted financially by the strike, she said. On Tuesday, negotiations continued between the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), represent- ing faculty, and the College Compen- sation and Appointments Council. Debbie Rautins, vice-president of Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) local 354 and the local strike coordinator, said the ongoing discussion was a positive sign. “As long as they’re there, you know something’s going on,” said Ms. Rau- tins. CATCHIN’ AIR Mike Pochwat/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Pickering residents Parker Tinkler and Sean Sarrazin jump kickflip out of the bowl in the skate park behind the Pickering Recreation Centre. By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — From linens to blood pressure machines to CT scanners, the Ajax and Pickering hospital wouldn’t be the health-care facility it is without its donors. The Auxiliary to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering has been supporting the hospital since before there was even one built. “We were responsible for all the lin- ens and buying the furniture for the nurses’ residence,” said Dorothy West- ney, who has been a member since the beginning. She said there was a lot of support right from the start and the members were committed to raising money for the local hospital. “I felt it was time we needed to have our own hospital,” she said. “I wanted to support it.” More recently the auxiliary raised the money for a CT scanner and it is in the middle of raising $500,000 for a commitment to the women’s imag- ing department. The volunteers have raised more than $4 million in the past 55 years. Ms. Westney was one of many do- nors recognized March 6 at the un- veiling of a new donor wall in the east lobby. The wall lists those who contributed to the Ajax and Pickering hospital before its amalgamation with Centenary, as well as those who have contributed to either site of the Rouge Valley Health System. (The wall lists those who have donated cumulative gifts of at least $25,000). “The donors are crucial to our fu- ture. This hospital wouldn’t have ex- isted without community support and wouldn’t have grown without it,” said president and chief executive officer Hume Martin. He said there is only $1 million in the budget annually between the two sites to buy capital equipment. “The technology changes so quickly that philanthropy, it’s important in every sector, is really vital in health care,” he said. The State Senate passed the bill Wednesday by a 37-0 vote. The House of Representatives passed the legislation by a 70-4 vote later in the afternoon. If ap- proved by congress it could mean a stop to garbage being shipped from Canada to Michigan. “So there is a crisis looming,” Durham Region commissioner of works Cliff Curtis said at the March 15 works committee meeting. “We could have as little as 60 days no- tice.” [What’s On ] Free Internet safety workshop PICKERING — A free work- shop is being offered to residents in order to reduce the risk of Inter- net luring and sexual exploitation of children. Last year’s annual mayor’s golf tour- nament raised enough money to buy 11 vital sign machines. “It made a world of difference,” she said. Ms. Eyman said the staff really ap- preciates community donations. “They feel like this investment has meant they are important too,” she said. Whether it be a $5 pillow or a $500 thermometer or $17,000 for an EKG machine, the expenses of stocking a hospital can quickly add up. Local businesses are also major con- tributors. Purdue Pharma just finished pay- ing off its five-year commitment of $300,000, which was used for a tempo- rary ambulatory care unit that is going to be the core of a new ACU in the proposed hospital expansion. General manager John Stewart said supporting the hospital is a good fit because the company is in the health- care business. But also because they are a part of the community. “Many of our employees and their families live in the Ajax and Pickering area,” he said. “They were very interested in us funding things to support the commu- nity,” he said. ✦ Pickering from page A1 Pickering, Ajax residents help keep hospital supplied with current equipment Dorothy Westney is one of many donors recognized on the new donor wall at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. & FURN I TURE LOW!28 YEARS IN THE BUSINESS CLEARANCE PRICES ON ALLCLEARANCE PRICES ON ALL 25 YR. Ajax man killed in crash April public meeting to discuss water plant By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — Future growth in the urban areas of Durham and York regions is expected to generate sew- age flows beyond the existing capacity of the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP). The plant, located in Pickering, treats the waste- water in Ajax and Pickering as well as parts of York. Dur- ham and York are undertak- ing a joint study to identify the preferred method of add- ing more treatment capacity to the Duffin Creek WPCP, explained Rich Tindall, proj- ect manager, Durham works department. The Region wants the ministry of the en- vironment to increase the av- erage capacity of the Duffin plant from 420,000 to 630,000 cubic metres per day. Mr. Tindall said staff is currently finalizing the third phase of a five-phase study, which involves an assessment of the alternative designs for expansion, and selection of a preferred design. This after a setback in the summer of 2005 when, according to Mr. Tindall, elevated levels of E. coli closed Rotary Beach in Ajax for most of the summer. “(The public) was con- cerned it was the plant,” Mr. Tindall said. The public is invited to an information centre on April 5 between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. at the Ajax Community Cen- tre, HMS Ajax Room. Mr. Tin- dall said the open house will give the public an opportu- nity to express concerns over the plant expansion, keying in on concerns about Rotary Beach. The E. coli found at Rotary Beach, Mr. Tindall said, could have a number of sources. “We have basically ruled out the plant as the source,” Mr. Tindall said. Staff from Ajax, the two regions as well as represen- tatives from Toronto Region Conservation and the min- istry of the environment will be on hand to address ques- tions. New timetables for students She said it gives her hope they’re ham- mering out a tentative agreement and added, realistically, teachers could be back in class by Monday. Although the strike needs to be over, the issues sur- rounding it need to be resolved as well, said Ms. Rautins. Faculty are seeking workload, salary and staffing improvements. Faculty at the province’s 24 colleges want a con- tract that addresses smaller classes, more teachers and more faculty time for students. A March 7 release by the Association of Colleges of Applied Arts and Tech- nology of Ontario states key elements of the council’s offer to OPSEU in- clude a 12.6 per cent increase in salary over four years, which would increase the maximum pay to $94,277 by April 2009, a four-year increase for ‘two-step coordinators’ to move their maximum salary to $99,303, and maintaining the average teaching time in the classroom at 14 hours per week. While faculty have been on strike, Durham College president Gary Po- lonsky has helped reduce anxiety by assuring teachers replacement work- ers would not be hired, said Ms. Rau- tins. “By him reassuring faculty that’s not the way it’s done at Durham College, it makes faculty less anxious,” she said. The college’s current plan is for all students to graduate at their scheduled ceremony. Ms. Moretton said the school day will remain within the normal 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekday hours with no week- ends or evenings added, but students will get a new timetable when they return with additional class hours. Exam week is cancelled and final projects and exams will be done dur- ing class time. Meanwhile, students are encouraged to use DC facilities to complete assign- ments they’re confident in doing, but will face no penalty for late assign- ments because of the strike, said Ms. Moretton. As for job placements, Ms. Moret- ton said most have been able to con- tinue despite the faculty strike. Only the placements that required direct faculty supervision, such as those in the health field, have been impacted. Students are guaranteed to receive all of the essentials in their program, she said. durhamregion.com Searchword:collegestrike2006 ✦ New from page A1 Grief support group sessions in April Meetings for those who have lost a friend, family member DURHAM — Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering is helping people deal w ith grief. By Jillian Follert Staff Writer OSHAWA — In an effort to ease the burden on General Motors, Oshawa council is urging the Region to accelerate the elimination of the large industrial tax class -- a move that chairman Roger Anderson warns could be costly for taxpayers. At a special meeting Thursday, council voted unanimously to throw its support behind the struggling auto industry by eliminating the large industrial taxation class in 2006, two years ahead of schedule. Back in 1998, the Province reformed its prop- erty tax system, and in turn gave municipalities the option of introducing new taxation classes to ensure that the same amount of revenue was col- lected. Like many others, the Region of Durham opted to create a large industrial taxation class, charg- ing a higher rate to industries operating a facility 125,000 square feet or more in size. GM has said for years that there is no reason why space-intensive businesses should pay more than others, and Oshawa council agrees. “We want to send the message to Detroit that we will do whatever it takes to make GM healthy and competitive,” said Councillor Brian Nichol- son, who moved the motion. “With the concerns that GM has, it’s important to accelerate this and do it now.” It is estimated that the cost of merging the industrial tax classes would be just under $1 mil- lion. Oshawa council is suggesting that this could be offset with funds from the Regional Tax Rate Sta- bilization Fund, and that the Region use a portion of its assessment growth revenues from 2007 and 2008, to return that money to the fund. The regional chairman does not support this direction, saying anything taken out of the large industrial class will inevitably be transferred to the residential taxpayer. “When you start using the stabilization fund to offset a tax increase, you’re just delaying the tax increase,” Mr. Anderson said. “There will be a tax impact, whether it’s this year or next year.” The chairman added the Region has a plan in place to remove the large industrial class by 2008, and said they should stick with it. Miriam Christie, manager of government re- lations at GM, said the company has to look at reducing cost structures in light of a difficult year and stressed that removing the large industrial class is one way the Region can help right now. “We need to eliminate it to make a more fair and equitable tax system,” she said. “The large industrial players have overpaid for a number of years and the others have underpaid as a result.” Oshawa council’s motion has been referred to the 2006 Regional budget deliberations for con- sideration. Region says taxpayers will hold the bill if Oshawa cuts GM tax PA GE A6 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ MARCH 22, 2006P When farm is a noun and not a verb M y wife and I have been looking for a farm now for a while. I love my little village, believe me, but we’ve been ‘townies’ for almost 15 years, and it’s funny how your per- spective changes. I can vividly remember my first night in this old house. I couldn’t sleep for the quiet. My body was attuned to shutting itself down to the hum of traffic, the wail of si- rens and the glare of halogen light through the window. The sudden silence of a small town was deafening. Now, after more than a decade here, what passes for ‘silence’ is a different animal. I am prone to sitting bolt upright in bed and hiss- ing “Geeze! Is that someone walking by our house!” It’s r idiculous, I know. I may as well be tossing and turning because the moon is too loud or “those damn ants are at it again!” But it happens to you. In one of life’s little ironies, the quieter it gets, the more stuff you hear. So, yes, I’ve been think- ing that having a little place in the middle of some acre- age might be the next logical step. I think my neighbours would agree. I am a bit of a ‘natur- ist’ when the weather turns warm and I am sure they have seen more of me than they ever signed on for. When I walk out on my deck on a summer’s morning all I want to hear is birdsong and per- haps the babbling of a brook, not the horrified shrieking of women and small children. A farm may be the answer. Of course, there is one other small issue. The word farm can also, unfortu- nately, be interpreted as a verb. As can the word ranch. What I am looking for could probably more honestly be described as a ‘Laze’ or a ‘Loaf.’ I have no inclination to farm anything. I am looking for a quiet little place, with a shady spot under some huge old trees where I can sit with my notepad and perhaps a tasty mint Julep and watch someone else farm. That would be my ideal. Regrettably, I am not sure my wife and I are on the same page concerning this farming thing. Suzanne was raised on a farm and is, as I have noted before, happiest when dig- ging, chopping or welding something. Even in our most intimate moments, I get the feeling she is thinking not so much about what a great lover I am, but how she needs to plaster those cracks in the ceiling. And that’s OK. In fact it’s great. The two of us have, in 20 years together, worked out a pretty equitable system. Over those years I have, I hope, taught her a thing or two about the gentle art of loafing and she has unques- tionably shown me on many occasions that there is great satisfaction in hard work well done. And now that I think about it that may be the best reason yet why a farm is a perfect fit at this point in our life. Those moments of still- ness, of sitting and relaxing and listening to the world from your verandah are al- ways made that much sweet- er when you’ve earned them through a little work. Mind you, I did say a ‘lit- tle’ work. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his column. While it’s nothing new to frustrated Durham residents who have been clamouring for provincial action for years, it is nice to hear a potential premier talk about a nagging Durham problem. For too long, Durham has been stuck with a less than adequate transportation system. While there are several dozen lanes leading into and out of Toronto from the west and north, there are currently just six highway lanes running on the 401 throughout most of Durham Region. While the traffic situation may have been OK a decade or two ago, it has led to bottlenecks and slow downs that not only tie up commuters but cause consternation for businesses that rely on just-in-time trucking de- liveries. And, what’s most frustrating is that the rapid growth in Durham is showing no signs of slowing down. However, the process currently in place for 407 expansion is crawling along at a snail’s pace. The Region of Durham has waited. The Province prepared an environ- mental assessment back in the mid-1990s in anticipation of 407 expan- sion. But, that assessment has since been shelved forcing the Province to do another assessment, much to the frustration of Regional Chairman Roger Anderson. There was plenty of 407 talk at the start of this decade, with hopes that there would be a 407 extension fully complete by 2010 at the latest. Now, that looks like a pipe dream. Mr. Tory made his comments while campaigning with Whitby-Ajax hopeful Christine Elliott who is hoping to replace her husband, Jim Fla- herty, in a byelection March 30. While it’s natural for Mr. Tory to criticize Premier Dalton McGuinty for inaction on the 407 over the last few years, it’s worth noting Mr. Tory’s predecessors, Mike Harris and Ernie Eves, did little to address 407 expansion through Durham either. Should Mr. Tory win government in October 2007 we’re hoping he has 407 expansion near the top of his to-do list. It’s a promise we’ll be counting on him to keep. Total Votes: 636 No: 81.2 % Yes : 9.8 % Indifferent: 9 % LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Powerful thoughts To the editor: The following thoughts are offered as we consider the electricity situation. While some aspects are more urgent than others, their resolution should be divorced from political schedules or im- pacts. The deterring of domestic wastage could be strengthened by steepening the scale of price increase with consumption in- crease. In an over-simplified ex- ample, if I paid $1,000 for the 5,000 kilowatt hours that I used last year (ie. 20 cents per kilowatt hour), perhaps I should get the first 3,000 kilo- watts next year free and be charged 60 cents per kilowatt hour for the balance. Wa stage beyond the con- sumer’s control due to the dis- tance between the source and consumption (line losses, coal freightage, pumping the gas, etc.) should be delineated in assessments of which generat- ing stations should be phased out and where new ones are established. Limited storage options, ie., reservoirs for hydro generation and hydrogen (if, where and when it is practical) give em- phasis to the need for adequate prompt short-term generating capacity to meet peak, largely unpredictable, needs. Wo uld storage be required were gas turbine-driven gen- erators the choice? The attraction of wind- and sun-derived electricity is great- ly enhanced once complimen- tary flexible generated capac- ity is assured. Automobile ecology objec- tives should be attained with- out shifting the burden on to the electricity grid. To the extent that out-of- province electricity is acquired, Canadian hydro sources should receive stronger consideration than U.S. coal-generated power. H. Ralph Stratford Whitby Regional politicians not doing the job To the editor: Re: Region faces water charges, March 15. I was shocked at reading this article after watching events unfold in Walkerton. Have our regional politicians not learned anything at all from Walkerton? We pay big bucks to the re- gional government to look after the affairs of our region, which include ensuring our water fa- cilities are run properly. Now we find out they are not doing the job we pay for. I think it’s time we had an accounting of just what these people do to earn their bucks. They need to be reminded that it’s not a soft ride we are pro- viding for them. Maybe an in-depth inves- tigation of Durham Regional government operations would show us that other important areas are being neglected. If these charges result in fines to our region, then a reduction in pay would be in order along with some resignations. Articles like this one just reinforce my belief that politi- cians only want to do as little as possible for as much as they can get. NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE Provision of Additional Capacity for the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant The Regional Municipalities of York and Durham are undertaking a joint study to identify the preferred method of providing additional wastewater treatment capacity at the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) to service future growth in the urban areas of York and Durham Regions. Located in the City of Pickering, the Duffin Creek WPCP treats the wastewater flows collected by the York- Durham Sewage System (YDSS), which provides sanitary sewer service to portions of York Region (Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Markham & Vaughan) and Durham Region (Ajax & Pickering). Population and employment growth forecasted for the existing and future service areas of the YDSS will ultimately generate sanitary sewage flows beyond the existing capacity of the Duffin Creek WPCP. The Regions are seeking approval from the Ministry of the Environment to increase the average day capacity of the Duffin Creek WPCP from 420,000 cubic metres/day to 630,000 cubic metres/day. This study is proceeding under Schedule C as described in the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (June 2000)document. The Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) is a five- phase process that includes an extensive evaluation of the impacts of proposed projects on the technical, natural, social/cultural, and economic components of the environment. We are currently finalizing the third phase of the study, which involves an assessment of the alternative design concepts for expansion of the WPCP, and selection of a preferred expansion concept. Numerous studies are being carried out as part of this phase to identify the potential impacts of the preferred expansion concept, and measures for mitigating these impacts. The studies are scheduled for completion over the spring of 2006, and include a receiving water impact assessment, a natural features impact assessment, and odour, air emission, and noise assessments. The fourth phase of the study will involve the filing of an Environmental Study Report (ESR) for public review and comment. The ESR will include comprehensive details on the studies undertaken, data collected, issues raised by stakeholders, and any other matters covered during the study. The fifth phase will involve the implementation of the recommendations. DUFFIN CREEK WPCP LOCATION PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE Members of the public are invited to attend an Information Centre on Wednesday, April 5, 2006, between 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Ajax Community Centre, HMS Ajax Room, 75 Centennial Road, Town of Ajax.Abrief presentation will commence at 7:00pm. Attendees will have an opportunity to examine and provide comment on the preferred expansion strategy, as well as the plans for mitigating impacts. We encourage your involvement in this study. Henry, 26, making his second Com- monwealth Games appear- ance after com- peting in the 2002 Games in Man- chester, England, was expecting a better result in the final. “A fter yester- day’s rounds I ex- pected a bit more today,” said Henry in a story posted on the Athletics Canada website. “My legs weren’t there. I wasn’t getting out the blocks and accelerating as well. I couldn’t get to the top-end speed smoothly.” Earlier Monday, Henry faced off against Powell in the 100-metre semi- finals. The result was clouded in some controversy as Powell reportedly ap- peared to veer into Henry’s lane nearing the end of the race, which could have resulted in disqualification. Common- wealth Games officials, however, ruled he didn’t impede Henry, who earned a spot in the final by finishing fourth in a time of 10.26. Henry ran his fastest time in the first- round heats on Sunday, finishing third in his heat in 10.25. In the second round, also on Sunday, Henry qualified for the semifinal by finishing second in a time of 10.30. Henry will now prepare to run for Canada in the 4-x-100-metre relay later this week. Anson Henry Pickering teen part of national under-19 men’s rugby team By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Big, strong and fast. That’s how John Moonlight describes the Canadian men’s under-19 rugby team -- a squad he’ll be part of -- that’s bound for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates for the International Rugby Board’s Men’s Under-19 World Champi- onships 2006. “We can go out and run over guys when it’s needed and then spin the ball out wide to the backs who will fly by the other teams with their speed,” says Moonlight, offering a preview of how the Canadians will play when they take the field at either the Sharjah Wanderers Rugby Club or the Dubai Exiles Rugby Club in Dubai for the championships from April 4 to 21. Moonlight is part of the 26-member Canadian team that will compete in the 24-nation championships. The countries will be divided into two divisions of 12 teams apiece. Canada was placed in the ‘B’ division and will play Tonga, Namibia and Korea in the pool rounds. Suffice to say, the 18-year-old, first- year Wilfrid Laurier University student is excited about suiting up for Canada. “I’m very excited to represent my country. It means a lot to me,” says Moonlight, who’s also a longtime mem- ber of the Ajax Wanderers Rugby Club. Moonlight’s also proud to be follow- ing in the footsteps of his cousin, David Moonlight, who has served as the cap- tain of Canada’s Sevens rugby team since the 2005-06 season. In fact, his cousin also played for Canada at the under-19 level, and has since played for Canada in the under-23 division and has achieved four international caps for the national senior men’s team. His advice for John at the world cham- pionships? Stay focused. “He basically told me what I need to do to play and how focused I must be,” he says. Moonlight says his place on the Cana- da’s under-19 world championship team was never a sure thing, especially at a training camp in Phoenix, Arizona from Feb. 10 to 20, where the 36 players were whittled down to 26 for the World Cup team. Those at camp also played two international matches against the U.S. under-19s. He remembers being down on him- self after the first couple of practices. “I started off with a strong perfor- mance in the fitness test, but when it came to the actual play drills on the sec- ond day of camp, I had a couple of bad practices and felt when I was selected for the Canada ‘A’ game (an exhibition match) that I might not be touring to Dubai.” Moonlight was named an assistant captain for Canada ‘A’ team’s game against the U.S., helping the Canadians secure a 45-15 victory. His solid play in that game paved the way for a spot on the bench for Canada’s Freedom Cup match -- a trophy awarded to the winner between the Canadian and the U.S. under-19 teams -- also played in Phoenix. The U.S. was the Cup’s previous winner, but Canada took it back with a 31-3 victory. Moonlight played five minutes in the final half, earning his first international cap. He remembers the U.S.-Canada game being faster than anything he had ever experienced before. “The level of play was amazing com- pared to anything I have ever played. Everything happens so quickly and so smoothly that for the first few minutes it took me a second to catch up. Once I got in the groove it was great. Everything was structured and everyone knew where to be and when to be where they should be,” he recalled. Following the two international matches, a week went by before getting the call to be part of Canada’s under- 19 team for the world championships. Moonlight admits it was an agonizing wait. “It was very hard the few days left after the camp waiting to find out,” says Moonlight. “There was a lot of good players at the camp and being new to the program I thought they might be look- ing for more experience. When I finally found out it was a huge relief. I could finally relax and begin training for the trip to Dubai.” The Canadian under-19s leave on March 24 and will undergo a train- ing camp in England before heading for Dubai. In England, the Canadians will play an exhibition game against the Leicester Tigers under-19 team on March 29. The Dunbarton High School graduate says he plans to resume playing for the Ajax Wanderers men’s team during the summer before heading back to Wilfrid Laurier in the fall. Close, but no Brier for Howard, Hart after loss to Quebec in final Ontario reps enter title game in the driver’s seat By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — A Canadian title and a chance to represent Canada at the world championships wasn’t to be for Pickering’s Richard Hart and the Glenn Howard rink representing Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier. Despite being the hottest team at the Canadian Men’s Curling Champi- onships in Regina, Sask., posting an 11-1 record en route to the final and having beaten the Brier champion Jean-Michel Menard rink of Quebec in the playoff game, the Ontario rink fell short in the final. The under- dog Quebecers edged Ontario 8-7 in an excit- ing contest at Regina’s Brandt Centre on Sun- day night. Menard took an early 4-0 lead and held on for the first Brier victory by a Quebec foursome since 1977. It was only the second time in Brier history that a Quebec rink has cap- tured the coveted curling crown. The Menard rink will represent Canada at the World Men’s Curling Championship in Lowell, Mass. from April 1 to 9. All four members of the Howard rink, however, were named in the all-star selections. Skip Glenn How- ard as skip, Hart at third and second Brent Laing were all named to the first all-star team; lead Craig Savill was selected to the second all-star squad. As finalists, Menard and Howard also received $40,000 each. Richard Hart PA GE B2 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ MARCH 22, 2006A/P Intermediates down Markham- Stouffville Stars DURHAM — The Dur- ham West Junior Light- ning intermediate ‘AA’ rep girls’ hockey squad emerged with a bronze medal at the Provincial Wo men’s Hockey League championship weekend in Windsor last week- end. In the bronze-medal contest, the Lightning scorched the Markham- Stouffville Stars 5-1 on Sunday morning. On Saturday night, the Durham West intermedi- ates were relegated to the bronze-medal game after losing 5-3 to the Stoney Creek Junior Sabres in the championship semi- final. The Sabres led 2-1 after the first period and added to their lead with two goals in the middle frame for a commanding 4-1 score. Durham out- scored Stoney Creek by a 2-1 margin in the third period. Lindsay Hill, Tara Wa- tchorn and Carling Jeyes scored for Durham West, with assists to Darby Smith, Jeyes, Kayla Rich- ard, Jenn Wakefield and Cristin Allen. Durham West finished in first place in ‘B’ Divi- sion round-robin play, chalking up three vic- tories. In Game 1, the Lightning outduelled the Etobicoke Junior Dol- phins 2-1. Durham West scored both its goals in the first period, off the sticks of Wakefield and Hill. Assists went to Kirsten Roach, Allen and Wakefield. Etobicoke scored its only goal in the second period. In Game 2, the Light- ning edged the Bluewa- ter Junior Hawks 2-1. The teams were tied at 1-1 after the second period, with Wakefield’s third- period marker standing up as the game winner. Roach opened the scor- ing for the Lightning, as- sisted by Wakefield and Hill. Smith drew an assist on Wakefield’s marker. In Game 3, Durham West posted a 2-1 win over the Markham- Stouffville Stars to finish preliminary play with an unblemished record. All the offence the Light- ning would need was provided in the opening period, with Wakefield notching both goals. Markham-Stouffville scored its lone goal in the second period. As- sisting on Wakefield’s goals were Roach, Amber Ellis and Jeyes. Other team members are Natalie Spooner, Alison Williams, Callie Bazak, Quinn Caggiula and Christie Connors. The Lightning defeated the Markham-Stouffville Stars 5-1 in the bronze-medal contest. Junior Lightning bronzed in league championship Guelph has stranglehold in best-of-five tilt PICKERING — The Pickering Panthers minor peewee ‘AA’ rep hockey team is on the ropes in its best-of-five all-On- tario final series against Guelph. Guelph holds a two- game-to-none advan- tage in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association cham- pionship series, with the Panthers hoping to stave off elimination in Game 3 of the series at Pickering’s Don Beer Arena on Tues- day night. The result wasn’t avail- able at press time Mon- day. The Panthers dropped Game 2 of the series 5-3 in Guelph on Sunday af- ternoon. The Pickering minor peewees also came out on the wrong end of a tight game with Guelph in Game 1 of the OMHA all-Ontario playdowns at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Saturday. The Panthers dropped a 1-0 decision to Guelph in the opener of the best-of- five final series. Midway through the first period, Guelph scored on a tre- mendous individual effort by Matthew Nightengale, who managed to elude three Pickering defenders, finishing with a highlight reel deke on goalie Mitch- ell Sora. The Guelph goal turned the momentum in favour of the visitors as they outplayed the Panthers throughout the second pe- riod. Pickering came on strong late in the third pe- riod as they pressed for the tying goal. With Guelph playing short-handed, and Sora on the bench in favour of an extra attacker, the Pan- thers came close several times but ultimately were unable to score the equal- izer. Pickering peewees hope to hang tough in OMHA final series Panthers’ Postscript PICKERING — The season may be over, but the Pickering Panthers are getting a head start on the next campaign by announcing the dates of its pre-tryout camp at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex. The three-day camp is slated for the complex’s O’Brien rink from April 3 to 5 from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. each night. The camp will prepare bantam- and midget-age players for upcoming midg- et and junior tryouts. For further in- formation, refer to the Panthers’ website, www. pickeringpan- thersjra.com, or call general manager Fr ank Robinson at 905-427-0930. The Panthers also announced the dates of its annual rookie camp. It’s at the Pickering R ecreation Complex on Monday, April 24 and Tuesday, April 25 from 8 to 11 p.m. and W ednesday, April 26 from 7 to 10 p.m. ••• Turnabout is fair play, es- pecially when it concerns the Markham Waxers and the Pickering Pan- thers. After sweeping the Panthers in four straight games out of the best- of-seven South Confer- ence semifinal series, the Markham Waxers were, in turn, silenced in the minimum four games in the South Conference final se- ries by the top-seeded St. Michael’s Buzzers. The Buzzers now play the Bowmanville Eagles -- the lone remaining Dur- ham Region tier II junior team in the playoff hunt -- in the OHA Ontario Pro- vincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League semifinal series. The other semifinal series pits the Oakville Blades of the league’s West Conference against the Stouffville Spirit of the North Conference. ••• Pickering Panthers power forward Brett Connolly is eligible to return to the Panthers’ fold next season, but head coach John Winder doubts that will be the case. Wind- er believes Con- nolly will turn pro with one of several pro leagues. “I’m sure that he’s going to explore that,” says Wind- er. “It’s not out of the realm of possibility (that he will return to the Panthers), but we’ll see as the summer progresses.” ••• After a season of sitting on the sidelines, the OPJHL will adopt the National Hockey League rules changes for the 2006-07 season. In- cluded in those rules is an all-out assault on obstruc- tion, which has provided the Ontario Hockey League and the NHL with more of- fence and more free-flow- ing play. “The rule changes will make the game faster,” predicts Winder. “Some of the penalties will be called more closely as they are in the OHL and the NHL.” Brett Connolly City tumblers near top at third Ontario Cup meet John WinderJohn Winder Pickering Athletic Centre athletes qualify for provincials PICKERING — A trio of Pickering Athletic Centre tumblers fared well at the third Ontario Cup qualify- ing event in the Etobicoke recently. A selection of her work is cur- rently on display at a Pickering restaurant until the end of May. By Fariha Naqvi Mohamed Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — From western Europe to Durham, youth to adulthood, painting has been a constant in Mia Azavedo’s life. The Ajax artist grew up in a village near Porto Portugal, but has been in Canada for over 40 years. “It’s in my blood,” says the en- thusiastic artist, “it’s something I’ve loved to do since I was a little girl. I always thought art was more important than math.” As a child, she would often get in trouble for doodling during class. Her artwork has made its way from Portugal to Paris and all over the GTA and Durham Re- gion. The 67-year-old paints to relax, choosing to do this later in the day to “capture the silence of the night.” She remembers put- ting her kids to sleep before re- tiring “to the basement to paint and unwind. “I paint to be in my world,” the artist says. “I paint everything, I don’t like to stick to one thing, to be bored.” Azavedo has painted all her life. Retiring from her job at Scar- borough General Hospital after 26 years meant she had more time to what she loves. Gwen Williams, vice-presi- dent and visual arts coordinator for the PineRidge Arts Coun- cil, classifies Azevedo’s work as having “a European style.” She elaborates by describing the art- work as “mostly landscapes, and calming sceneries.” Azevedo’s scenic artwork is on display at Papps Casual Dining in Pickering until the end of May. “I like when people appreciate my work, it helps inspire me,” she says. As a result, she’s optimistic about the future, and hopes to continue displaying her artwork at shows and exhibitions. Chris Papatheodorou, owner of Papps Casual Dining, de- scribes the self-taught artist as “a very down-to-earth and person- able lady, who’s proud of what she does, and you can definitely see it in her artwork.” He says her depiction of scenery and landscapes is “very fresh.” Papps is located at 1755 Pickering Parkway Unit 20. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Admission is free. For more information call 905- 427-3403. Capturing the ‘silence of the night’ PUT A SMILE ON YOUR TILE!!!
