Region alerted to
residents’ concerns
after sales calls
By Erin Hatfield
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Claims local
water is unsafe to drink are
nothing more than a sales tac-
tic, according to Durham Re-
gion.
“There is nothing more to it
than (sales people) are trying
to create doubt in an effort to
sell some expensive water treat-
ment equipment,” said Lloyd
Murray, a representative from
the Region of Durham.
The Region recently received
reports of a private company
going door-to-door selling
water treatment devices. The
sales people are said to conduct
an in-house water test and resi-
dents have complained they use
aggressive sales tactics by say-
ing the Region’s water supply is
unsafe to drink.
The Region was alerted to the
issue when it received a number

PICKERING — Chairman Roger
Anderson is adamant that Durham
Region not take on provincial roads
that are not up to standard.
The Region has been approached
to assume responsibility for Hwy.
7 from the York-Durham Line to
Brock Road in Pickering, and
Church Street and adjacent lands
in the Town of Ajax near the former
Hwy. 401 interchange.
The road, Mr. Anderson said at
the Region’s March 15 works com-
mittee meeting, is a provincial prob-
lem and he doesn’t want to see the
Province download it onto the Re-
gion. The ministry of transportation
approached the Region to take over
Hwy. 7 with provincial money for
improvements on the bridge and
pavement rehabilitation along the
route.
“There is absolutely no way the
Region of Durham should assume
Hwy. 7 until it is widened with
curbs,” Mr. Anderson said. “Unless
the Province comes to the table
with enough cash to reconstruct it
to four lanes and five years of main-
tenance.”
Region staff presented a report
recommending the Region assume
responsibility for the highway, sub-
ject to adequate funding to address
upgrading. As for the Church Street
area, staff recommended to council
that the Region assume the lands
if the Province provides funding to
rehabilitate Mill Street, the former
highway ramp.
However a motion passed to go
against the recommendation and
have staff go back to the ministry
to try to negotiate a deal. Council-
lors want the Province to pay for
the widening of Hwy. 7 as well as
the bridge structure on the section
of road. The section in question is
a two-lane road 6.9 kilometres in
length. Region staff found the bridge
structure to be in poor condition.
Also, there is approximately 800 me-
tres of existing guardrail which does
not meet current standards.
“If we insist on five years of main-
tenance or widening it is not going to

www.durhamregion.comCATCH UP ONLINE AT happen,” commissioner of works Cliff
Curtis said.
Mr. Curtis explained his fear was the
Region would not take the offer and the
Province would download the road at a
later date without any monetary assis-
tance for improvement.
Mr. Anderson insisted, “Someone has
to stop the provincial downloading.
“If they are going to give us stuff it has
to be up to standard,” he said.
“I know for a fact Pickering council is
going to go nuts over this,” Mr. Anderson
said. “They are going to have another
Brock Road on their hands.”
Pickering regional councillor Rick
Johnson said in fact his municipality is
not pleased.
He explained seven years ago the
Province announced Hwy. 407 would
end at Brock Road and since that time
traffic volume has become a problem.
Coun. Johnson said Pickering does not
want to see the same thing happen with
Hwy. 7.
“The City of Pickering finds that to-
tally unacceptable,” Coun. Johnson said.
“Turning over to the Region is down-
loading and it has got to stop.”
Although the Province has offered
some funding for road reconstruction,
Coun. Johnson said the Region needs to
consider the future costs of the road. He
uses Hwy. 2 as an example, downloaded
to the Region and now costing a fortune
to maintain, Coun. Johnson said. Hwy.
2 is estimated to cost in the area of $2
million to maintain, $5,000 annually per
kilometre of single lane.
“Hwy. 7 will be a mirror to Hwy. 2,”
Coun. Johnson said. “And we don’t want
them to give it to us unless they give us
the money to widen it to four lanes.
“The property taxpayers shouldn’t
have to pay for commuter traffic moving
through their municipality,” Coun. John-
son said. “
And Hwy. 7, the majority is used for
commuter traffic.”

Downloading of road ‘unacceptable’: Johnson
of phone calls from residents con-
cerned about the statements being
made.
“We had people phone our office
wanting to know what was wrong with
the water,” Mr. Murray said. “There is
nothing wrong with the water.”
This isn’t the first time the Region
has received such complaints. In early
2004, nearly 100 complaints about
water filter sales people flooded in.
“We haven’t had this issue for the past
year or more,” Mr. Murray said.
He said they assumed the company
had packed up and moved on. So,
when calls once again started to come
in, the Region wanted to head it off.
“It is totally misleading,” Mr. Mur-
ray said. “Its only purpose is to make
a sale.”
Durham Region does not sell or en-
dorse water treatment equipment for
customers of the Region’s municipal
water supply systems.
If such sales representatives solicit
residents, they are encouraged to call
and report their experience to the
Region’s Technical Support staff.
“We want to provide accurate in-
formation so (residents) do know
the water is safe,” Mr. Murray said.
“There is no need for them to buy
additional equipment.” The Region’s
works department assures residents
the municipal water supply meets,
and in many cases exceeds, all of the
Ontario Drinking Water Quality Stan-
dards.
“We do have a program in place
that provides drinking water that is
safe,” Mr. Murray said.
The Region uses a licensed, ac-
credited laboratory, as required by
Provincial regulations, to confirm the
quality and safety of the water.
Municipal water is tested on an
ongoing basis, as required by the On-
tario Drinking Water Regulations, set
by the Province.

PICKERING — Three attackers beat
a Pickering man before the victim’s
wife and daughter frightened them
off Friday morning, police said.
Investigators want to speak to wit-
nesses, including motorists who may
have been passing by at the time
of the 7:30 a.m. assault on Stroud’s
Road.
Durham Regional Police said the
man found his car windshield cov-
ered in broken eggs. As he was clean-
ing the mess up he was jumped and
beaten by three men who clubbed
him with objects, police said.
The attack ended when the vic-
tim’s wife and teenaged daughter
screamed at the assailants, all de-
scribed as Asian men in their late
teens or early 20s.
Police say the attack was probably
not random.
Investigators want to talk to any-
one who may have witnessed the
incident, including people who were
driving on Stroud’s Lane, Treetop
Crescent and Calvington Crescent
Friday morning.

Ho spital money there— with strings
By Danielle Milley
Staff Writer
DURHAM — The hospital re-
ceived the green light last week
for its redevelopment project,
but millions of dollars pledged
remain contingent on other fac-
tors.
The Rouge Valley Health Sys-
tem Foundation has $20.7 mil-
lion either in the bank or pledged
towards the estimated $59.1 mil-
lion redevelopment project, but
more than $10 million of that
money has conditions attached.
Regional council pledged $3.5
million, but in December, fol-
lowing a controversy about the
transfer of pediatrics and ob-
stetrics from Ajax to Centenary,
a motion was passed that the
money be dependant on council
being satisfied with the services
offered. (The services ending up
staying in Ajax).
Regional chairman Roger
Anderson said even though the
redevelopment has been given
the go ahead by the Province,
the hospital still has to come to
council.
“The motion is pretty clear
the board has to appear before
council and satisfy council as to
the direction of the hospital,” he
said. “We just want to be satis-
fied the services will continue to
be there.”
Ajax Mayor Steve Parish was
supportive of that regional mo-
tion.
“I would think the way it
should unfold is once the an-
nouncement turns into real-
ity...then I think these funds
will flow,” he said following the
March 9 announcement.
Debbie McGarry, president
and CEO of Rouge Valley Hospi-
tal Foundation, said the money
won’t be needed until construc-
tion starts (probably not until
summer 2007) and it won’t be
needed all at once.
“I have complete faith in our
community and the donors
who have supported us in the
past that the money will be
there when it is needed,” she
said. “Our number one priority
is to respect our donors needs
and then we try to make it work
with the cash flow the hospital
needs.”
The biggest donation, $7.5
million, is tied to the devel-
opment of Seaton in central
Pickering.
In May 2005, Joe Lebovic
made the offer on behalf of
himself, Fred DeGasperis and
Mattamy Homes in exchange
for subdivision approvals within
18 months. Distribution of the
money is to be tied to the num-
ber of building permits issued.
The three are the landown-
ers who will receive property in
Seaton in exchange for giving
the Province land they owned
on the Oak Ridges Moraine in
Richmond Hill. (That exchange
is still not complete).
Lloyd Cherniak, Lebovic En-
terprise’s executive vice-presi-
dent, said as of March 10 he
hadn’t talked to the hospital
about the latest announcement.
Ten months into the 18-month
time frame set out in the deal,
Mr. Cherniak said the Province
is moving along and the ques-
tion of timing lies with the City
of Pickering.
“We have made the pledge to
the hospital; we hope everything
will turn out,” he said.
The final number would be
agreed upon once the draft ap-
provals are given and they know
how many units are to be built.
Pay out would happen as each
batch of building permits is is-
sued.
Even though the land hasn’t
been swapped and develop-
ment hasn’t begun in Seaton,
Ms. McGarry is confident the
pledge will be there when it is
needed.
“If it is delayed significantly
we’ll have to look at how we’ll
provide those dollars,” she said.
When asked what she meant
by delayed significantly, she said
if in a couple years there was no
movement in Seaton.

Wants to ‘send
message’ to
Queen’s Park
By Keith Gilligan
Staff Writer
AJAX — Julie Gladman
doesn’t just talk the talk.
She’s walks the walk.
“I’m a high school teach-
er and as part of my teach-
ing, I’ve always stressing to
my students being respon-
sible citizens, politically ac-
tive and socially aware,” she
says. “If I preach this mes-
sage, I better be prepared
to pick up the ball and run
with it.”
An English teacher at Sin-
clair Secondary School, Ms.
Gladman is making her first
attempt at elected office,
carrying the New Demo-
cratic Party banner in the
March 30 Whitby-Ajax Rid-
ing byelection.
Her reason for running
-- aside from what she tells
her students -- is “to send
a message to Queen’s Park
about what’s going on,
what’s not going on and
what should be going on.
Premier (Dalton) McGuinty
promises have either been
ignored or he’s backed off of
them.
“Health care really hasn’t
been well attended to by this
government,” she says. “The
McGuinty government rein-
stated the OHIP premium.
It’s really hit the lower rung
of the socio-economic lad-
der the hardest. They can’t
really afford it.”
The big issue at the door
is health care, Ms. Gladman
adds.
“This riding is bookend-
ed with examples of health-
care mismanagement. At
one end there’s the Whitby
hospital and at the other
end there’s the Ajax hos-
pital. People are very wor-
ried about where and when
they’ll obtain their health
care,” she states.
Ms. Gladman also points
to medical services that have
been de-listed, meaning
OHIP won’t cover the cost
of them. These include eye
examinations, chiropractic
care and physiotherapy.
“It forces people to pay
for these themselves or they
go without them and then
that cost the health-care
system more,” she says.
Public transit also hasn’t
been funded properly, she
states, noting GO Transit
announced a fare increase
recently.
“The so-called amalga-
mation of Durham Transit
has been ineffective, largely
because there hasn’t been
any input of provincial dol-
lars,” she states.
Mr. McGuinty referred
to himself as the “educa-
tion premier,” Ms. Gladman
notes, adding teachers were
hopeful when he was elect-
ed.
“We really put our faith in
him. He said he would re-
store full funding, as per the
Rozanski report. So far, he
hasn’t done that. He hasn’t
changed the basic nature of
funding,” she says.
There are 22 portables
at Sinclair, Ms. Gladman
notes.
“He said he would ad-
dress it and he hasn’t. He’s
playing a shell game,” she
says. “I smile ironically every
time (education minister)
Gerard Kennedy makes an
announcement.”
Ms. Gladman is the vice-
president of District 13 of
the Ontario Secondary
School Teachers’ Federa-
tion. She’s been involved
with the union for about 10
years and has been on the
executive for four years.
“It’s an incredible experi-
ence. It’s very eye opening.”

Whitby-Ajax Riding Votes March 30
Teacher bids for office , says health care ‘big issue at door’

Longfield a familiar face to local voters
By David Blumenfeld
Staff Writer
AJAX — Judi Longfield is
no stranger to politics.
In spite of her claim she
would not run as the Lib-
eral candidate in the provin-
cial byelection after losing
in the Jan. 23 federal elec-
tion, Ms. Longfield decided
she couldn’t walk away from
public service.
She decided to jump into
the race to replace the man
she lost to in January, Jim
Flaherty. In a bit of a twist,
she gets to face off against Mr.
Flaherty’s wife, Conservative
candidate Christine Elliott.
Ms. Longfield has a long
career as a politician. She was
a Whitby municipal council-
lor for five years, followed by
three consecutive terms as a
an MPP.
“This is not an entry level
job. We’re halfway through
our mandate and the person
who is elected needs to be
on the ground running,” said
Ms. Longfield, who was elect-
ed an MPP in Whitby-Ajax as
a Liberal in 1997 and 2000,
and again in 2004 in Whitby-
Oshawa, after the riding
boundary restructuring. The
next provincial election is in
October 2007, giving the win-
ner just 18 months before a
return trip to the polls.
“I have experience work-
ing in this riding at all lev-
els,” said Ms. Longfield, who
has lived in Whitby with her
husband, Alan, and their son,
Michael, for 35 years.
“I know the system and
I know what it takes to get
things done. I have delivered
results and I want to continue
to fight for this community.
That’s my main focus... to get
as much infrastructure and
investment... as I possibly
can.”
During her time in Ottawa,
Ms. Longfield served on a
number of committees, in-
cluding panels on national
development and veterans
affairs, child custody and ac-
cess, development and status
of persons with disabilities. In
her last 17 months in office,
she said she helped secure
about $300 million in fund-
ing for Durham Region.
Regionally, she is very proud
of the millions of dollars in
investment committed to
the General Motors’ Beacon
Project, and the gas tax re-
bate now being given to local
municipalities.
She is also proud of the
various local infrastructure
projects she has helped bring
about, including secured
funding for public libraries
and fire halls in Whitby and
Ajax, and the Rossland Road
and Garden Street bridges in
Whitby.
“Those are significant in-
vestments. All those things
make a difference in the eco-
nomic viability of this com-
munity. I want to do the same
at the provincial level,” she
said.
Moreover, she wants to
continue to be a voice for
local residents and improve
services, such as health care,
that she says seem to have
slipped in this community.
“You can’t sit by and watch
what’s happened over the
years and not be involved,”
she said. “I know the system.
I know what it takes to get
things done.”

EDITORIAL
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Talks will hopefully
lead to agreement
W ith March break now over, it’s time to stop walking
and start talking. That was the message from Chris
Bentley, the minister of colleges and universities, who
invited both sides in the college teachers’ strike to sit down and
discuss the situation with him this past Friday.
Apparently the minister’s message was heard as both the
college teachers and the College Compensation Council will go
back to the table Monday. Both sides have had nearly two weeks
of picket lines, press releases and public education to make their
respective points. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of college
students find their school years, and their lives, stuck in limbo.
There is a critical difference between the current job action
and the previous one undertaken in 1989. The 1989 college
teacher strike took place in the fall, near the start of the school
year. That four-week walkout resulted in an additional week of
instruction and students were looked after.
However, this time out, with two weeks of school lost so far
and counting, students have much bigger concerns. Some fear
they won’t graduate on time, leaving them scrambling to find
work.
Others worry their much-needed placements, which often
can result in a job offer, will be curtailed or missed entirely.
Every week of instruction lost will result in a lengthened
school year. That leaves those who need to work full-time to
afford to return to school with less time to earn cash critical to
help pay the bills. It hasn’t been easy for the public to get a han-
dle on what this strike is really all about. To most it would appear
the offer by the Province of a 12.6 per cent salary increase over
four years, combined with an average teaching load of 14 hours
per week and maximum salaries reaching $94,000, is reason-
able enough. Union reps say the strike “is not about money,” but
rather about limiting class sizes and teacher workload.
If neither side shows any intent to settle, the Province should
bring in back-to-work legislation so students aren’t the only
ones who end up losing out.
School drug use rampant
To the editor:
As a longtime resident of the community and the mother of
four children, three of whom are teens, I have had an ongoing
concern about the situation in our high schools. Drug abuse,
alcohol abuse, drug trafficking and theft are rampant in our
schools. I have worked with several local high school teachers
who estimate that as many as 20 per cent of students in any
given classroom are stoned when they attend, if they attend.
Drug deals take place in hallways and students take drugs on
school property. Our high schools often do not take attendance
and many students miss classes regularly, often to drink and do
drugs.
Drug trafficking, gang behaviour, violence and the wide-
spread theft of personal items lead may students to fear for their
safety while in school.
It’s time that we acknowledge and address our part in this
problem. Simple values of honesty and respect for others seem
to be missing in many young people. Many students feel alien-
ated in a society and school system that frequently ignores
their needs. It is the responsibility of the community to strongly
address the symptoms and the causes. As teen crime and high
school drop-out rates continue to rise, none of us can afford to
look away. Parents, teachers, administrators, police, media and
our local politicians must look at our roles and responsibilities
in this and work toward solutions.

I f college faculty is really fighting for
quality education, it should get back
to class and find other ways to protest
its contract. Wrapping up their second
week of picketing, teachers from Ontar-
io’s 24 community colleges are potentially
pushing back year’s end for students and
claiming it’s for the benefit of their educa-
tion.
“I want to stress it’s not about money,”
said Debbie Rautins, vice-president of the
Ontario Public Service Employees Union
(OPSEU) local 354 and the local strike
co-ordinator. “I would tell students this is
about them.”
But, with every day students spend sit-
ting at home instead of in class, receiving
the education for which they’ll probably
still be paying for many years to come, it
doesn’t look like their teachers are doing
them any favours.
With all the hype over a university ed-
ucation lately, college students have a
tough enough time competing with uni-
versity graduates for jobs. Even if they
manage to finish this year on time, as
is being planned by colleges, potential
employees may question what kind of
condensed education they’ve received.
Although claims are being made by
strikers that their protests are not about
money, it’s hard to believe. Written on the
handout provided by pickets at Durham
College last Tuesday is, “We want salary
improvements so colleges can attract and
keep the best possible faculty at appropri-
ate pay rates between high schools and
universities.” It also includes points about
smaller classrooms, more teachers and
faculty time with students.
The strike is also about money for many
college students who depend on summer
jobs to pay for their upcoming year. Qual-
ity education means nothing if students
can’t afford it because their teachers were
out picketing.
According to a March 7 release by the
Association of Colleges of Applied Arts
and Technology of Ontario, key elements
of the offer to OPSEU include a 12.6-per
cent increase in salary over four years,
which would increase the maximum pay
to $94,277 by April 2009 and maintain av-
erage teaching times in the classroom at
14 hours per week. In their 2004 contract,
effective from Sept. 2003 to Aug. 2005,
faculty received a 7.5-per cent raise over
two years. If the proposed 12.6 offer is
accepted, by 2009 they’ll have gotten a 20
per cent raise over six years.
College faculty have been without a
contract since Aug. 31 - why not go a few
more months and let students finish the
year, then hit the picket lines?

As a little guy I learned early on
that school was not going to become a
great love of mine. I was 13 years old
and my reading and math skills were at a
grade 3 level. I had grown older and the
seriousness of my problem had become
a great concern. Through a friend, my
mother heard about the successes of a
program called Arrowsmith.
I began going to Arrowsmith at
the age of 14. When I first started the
program I was at a grade 4 reading level
and a grade 3 in math. For the first year,
I only worked on a series of cognitive
exercises for my specific problems and
after half a year, we could see significant
progress.
This was the first time that we ever
saw progress that showed measurable
gains. I was able to read and understand
basic math formulas at a level that I was
unable to, prior to doing the exercises,
by the end of the year. My capacity for
understanding had grown.
I spent three years in the Arrowsmith
Program. At the end of my three years, I
Arrowsmith program brings hope and confidence to kids with learning difficulties
was at grade 10 in both reading and math.
For the first time in my life I was at my
grade level.
I went on to graduate from high school
and college. Arrowsmith strengthened
areas of my brain, which enabled me
with the gift of being able to participate
in learning. Before Arrowsmith I lacked
the ability to grasp the concepts that were
essential to surviving in the world today.
Learning disabilities offer unique and
unexpected challenges. Fortunately, they
can also inspire unique and unexpected
ideas and solutions. Barbara Arrowsmith
Young founded the Arrowsmith
Program, a cognitive program based on
neuroscientific research and 25 years
experience at Arrowsmith School in
Toronto, that is now available in seven
schools in the Toronto Catholic District
School Board as well as eight private
schools in Canada and one in New York.
One parent who helped bring the
Arrowsmith Program to her child’s school
said, “I knew the program could make
permanent changes that will benefit my
children not only in academics, but in
life. I didn’t want a program to treat the
symptoms, I wanted a program designed to
treat at the source of the problems.”

New digs for

PICKERING — As the Brougham

In August 1944, the Township pur-

After some renovating and upgrad-

I am currently pregnant with my
fi rst child. I have noticed that along
with my other bodily changes,
my feet and legs are also affected.
What other changes might I expect
and how can I keep myself more
comfortable?
As you begin to gain weight due
to pregnancy the added stresses
placed on the foot are most notice-
able as you approach your delivery
date. An important hormone you
are producing during the preg-
nancy is relaxin. This enables your
ligaments to be more lax so that
they can expand, not just around
the stomach and pelvic area for the
fetus, but also in the foot. The foot
will lengthen and widen during the
pregnancy allowing for a greater
surface area to carry the additional
weight. After delivering, in most
cases, the foot will revert back to
normal, although some of my pa-
tients complain that their foot has
remained at least half to a full size
larger.
The best bit of advice I can
give you is to wear good support-
ive shoes. These will support the
arch, shock absorb during the lat-
ter months and accommodate the
swollen foot by loosening the laces.
If you were used to wearing higher
heeled shoes before the pregnancy
and now you are wearing fl ats,
you may notice some calf muscle
strain, either at its insertion behind
the knee or at the achilles tendon.
Pressure of the fetus in the pel-
vic area where the veins lead back
to the heart, may cause a back up
of blood in these veins. This can
lead to varicose veins and swelling
of the foot and legs. It is most im-
portant to keep your legs elevated.
Also a good pair of properly fi tted,
but not too tight, support hose will
control the swelling.
If you were a pronator before
your pregnancy, the increased
laxity and fl atter arch will lead to
hyperpronation. I cannot over em-
phasize the importance of a good
supportive shoe.
The increased incidence of plant-
er warts with pregnancy, especially

I always try to encourage my pa-

having sore feet is a small price to

Booker vying
for a medal
at Paralympics
Ajacian and Canadian
sledge hockey team
play Norway for gold
AJAX — Ajax’s Jeremy Booker is
guaranteed to return from the 2006
Paralympic Games in Torino, Italy
with a medal. The only question
that remains is whether it will be
gold or silver.
Booker and the Canadian men’s
sledge hockey team played for gold
against rival Norway in Italy on Sat-
urday, with the result unavailable at
press time Friday.
The Canadians booked their tick-
ets to the gold-medal game after
scoring a decisive 5-0 shutout victo-
ry over Germany in semifinal action
on Thursday. Booker, a left winger,
had several solid opportunities dur-
ing the contest, but was unable to
convert.
Canada and Norway have faced
off twice in 2005-06, with Canada
winning 3-1 in December to cap-
ture the German Invitational. Nor-
way, however, defeated Canada in
earlier round-robin action at the
Paralympics, 4-1, earlier this week.
In other round-robin play, Cana-
da started the Paralympics with a 9-
0 thumping of Great Britain. Booker
scored a goal in the contest.
In Game 2, the Canadians up-
ended host Italy 12-0, with Booker
contributing an assist.
Booker, 19, who was born with
spina bifida, leaving him unable to
walk, is in his first Paralympic com-
petition after becoming a member
of Canada’s national sledge hockey
team four years ago.
In an interview prior to leaving
for the Paralympics, Booker noted
that he believed Canada had a shot
at a gold medal, but added that Nor-
way and the Americans would be
the Canadians’ chief competition.
The U.S. and Norway did meet
up in the semifinal, with the Nor-
wegians earning a 4-2 victory, thus
earning a chance to compete for
gold with the Canadians.
Sledge hockey is the version of
traditional hockey for athletes with
a disability, including checking
against the boards, constant turn-
overs, players changing on the fly,
sudden and lightning hits, spec-
tacular saves and special pads for
protection.
First time Central
regional ringette team
golden at Games
DURHAM — The Central Fury
‘AAA’ ringette team capped off a
dream season by defeating Western
Region 7–1 in the final of the Ontario
Winter Games in Barrie last week-
end.
Central earned a bye to the gold-
medal game by finishing first in the
round robin with a 4-0-1 record.
Western made its way to the final
with an emotional, hard-fought win
in the semifinal over the favoured
Eastern team, winning 7-6.
In the final, Central got off to a
quick start with an early 2-0 lead.
Western responded with a goal,
making it 2-1 before Central took
control. Central’s potent offence was
too much for Western as they scored
five unanswered goals for the vic-
tory.
Deanna DaDalt led the way with
four goals in the final; Jodie Hannen,
Lyndsay Whyte, and Carly Taylor
added single markers to round out
the scoring.
The win marks the first time Cen-
tral Region has won the gold in rin-
gette at the Ontario Winter Games.
As a precursor to the Games,
Central won two out of three of the
Challenge Cup tournaments held
earlier in the season. The team fin-
ished with an impressive combined
record of 17-1-5 on the season.
Central Region players are drawn
from the ringette associations of
Whitby, Pickering and Ajax.
Other team members are
Kelsey Gallant, Caitlyn Helling-
man, Elyssa Jasper, Kristin John-
ston, Christine Langford, Megan
Macaulay, Chantelle McCrae, Al-
lison Parent, Keri Shanks, Erin
Stepniak, Alanna Ticknor and
Kim Wilson. Ed Stepniak, Doug
Freeman, Karen Duguay, Lindsay
Freeman, and Carolyn Mountjoy
coach the team. The manager is
Jerry Johnston.

juniors off
to provincials
Qualify for Ontarios
after beating Whitby
in ringette series
DURHAM — It wasn’t easy, but
the Ajax-Pickering junior ‘A’ ringette
team is headed for Sault Ste. Marie
to compete in the 2006 Ontario Pro-
vincial Championships.
Ajax-Pickering will represent
Central Region at the provincials,
from March 23 to 26. Ajax-Pickering
will battle the best in the Province
at the Soo. Other teams are Ham-
ilton (Southern Region), London
(Western Region), Nepean (Eastern
Region), Valley East (North Eastern
Region), Thunder Bay (North West-
ern Region) and host West Ferris,
the wild card entry.
The juniors earned the right to
compete at the provincials after
downing the Whitby Wildcats in
a best-of-three regional playdown
two games to none. Both games,
however, were hotly contested.
Ajax-Pickering scored a come-
from-behind 5-4 overtime victory
over Whitby in Game 2 to complete
the series sweep. Whitby opened the
contest with four consecutive goals
to take a commanding lead in the
first period. With only seconds left in
the frame, however, Natalie Pozzan
beat the Whitby goalie, assisted by
Maddy Bubis, to put Ajax-Pickering
on the board.
Bench coach Shannon Kay rallied
the troops at the half-time break
and a different team emerged. Ajax-
Pickering scored three unanswered
goals in the second period to send
the contest to overtime.
Just seconds into overtime, Nicole
Vernoy emerged as the hero, pot-
ting the game winner, assisted by
Samantha Embleton and Jordanne
Florio. Other regulation scorers were
Bubis, Pozzan and Jessie Kay, who
netted the equalizer. Pozzan added
an assist. Shannon Sauve provided
stellar defence and forechecking.
In the provincial qualifying series
opener, Ajax-Pickering scored a 4-3
victory. Embleton, with two, Kay,
Pozzan and Embleton scored, with
assists to Vernoy with two, Bubis
and Kay.
In the dying minutes of the final
frame, still one player shorthand-
ed, Ajax-Pickering withstood the
barrage, thanks to a game-saving
stop by goalie Hilary Trentadue on
a breakaway. Ajax-Pickering’s de-
fence core of Kristie Budai, Sarah
Sidaway and Jade West, assisted by
centermen Laura Bignell, held off
the Wildcats’ crushing attack.

The greatest challenge for all compa-
nies today is to constantly change to meet
the changing needs of their customers.
RENOCanada (a new concept in
home improvement) has evolved from one
of Scarborough’s best known plumbing
businesses.
The Plumbing Mart at 1534 Mid-
land Avenue is updating and changing its
identity to better represent its expertise and
focus on quality home improvements.
Specializing in Bathroom and
Kitchen Makeovers, RENOCanada is a
single source for homeowners who want to
improve the quality of their life at home...
without moving. The company has shifted
the focus from the retailing of plumbing
hardware and fi xtures to that of a specialist
in design, renovations,installations–atotal-
solution from concept to completion. Their
unique range of services and experience
makes renovation easy, practical and afford-
able. The new Inspiration Center, currently
being developed at the original location, will
provide an exciting and educational environ-
ment that helps homeowners to visualize and
plan their dreams.
What has not changed is the compa-
ny’s commitment to great service and in-
dustry setting standards like their fi ve year
war ranty backed by the most experienced
renovation consultants and craftsmen in the
business. RENOCanada promises consum-
ers a positive experience by aligning itself
with nationally acclaimed home renovation
expert Sam Beninato, who has over a thou-
sand projects to his personal credit.
“Superior service standards will be
strictly enforced” says Sam, who sums up
the collective wisdom of their strategy like
this: “when remodeling, remember that re-
gardless of the styles you choose or the cost
of the materials, there’s no substitute for a
good quality craftsmanship”.
For thousands of local area homeown-
ers, it has always been the people and per-
sonal attention that set this company apart
from other renovators. RENOCanada’s staff
understand renovation from the customer’s
perspective. They know that home improve-
ment is not about the house, it’s about self
improvement (Lifestyle), it’s personal.
The company describes their primary
customers as “discerning” homeowners.
These are people that don’t necessarily
have big budgets but who feel that Bath-
rooms and
Kitchens need to be exciting regard-
less of budget. They have higher expec-
tations, says Sam; demanding seamless
service from inspiration to installation and
an overall experience that is hassle free,
educational and rewarding.
“Discerning customers don’t want
to be sold anything but want someone to
act as an ‘editor’ helping them to make
choices that are right for them,” says Sam.
“They need to feel ‘in control’ and want a
service provider that will empower them to
get satisfaction.”
The showroom is only 15 minutes
from anywhere in Ajax and Pickering. It’s a
short drive west on Hwy 401, south on Mc-
Cowan Rd. to Lawrence, go west two major
intersections to Midland and then just one
block north on the west side.
If you would like to understand how
easy, practical and affordable it is to turn the
house you have into the lifestyle you want,
Call (416) 285-6798, 1-888-228-4736 or
visit our website at renocanada.com today to
arrange a Free In-Home Consultation.
