Lawyers for both Hydro One and the Ministry of Environment agreed to put the matter over until 11 a.m. Nov. 28 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Whitby. Hydro One is charged with “causing or permitting the discharge of transformer fluid to the water and banks of Pine Creek that may impair the quality of the water, in contravention of Section 30, Subsection 1 of the Water Resources Act.” The charge was laid Sept. 9. It car- ries a maximum penalty of $6 million. On Oct. 1, 2003, a transformer rupture at the Cherrywood Transformer Station, near the 3rd Concession and Finch Av- enue, resulted in a 159,000-litre mineral oil spill. Roughly 30,000 litres could not be contained on site, entering a storm sewer and then Pine Creek, which flows into Frenchman’s Bay. Says new Pickering facility best located at Dixie and Kingston By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — Despite objections from several members of Pickering council, Durham Region EMS still be- lieves the best location for a new am- bulance facility is at Dixie and Kingston roads. Richard Armstrong, director of EMS, made a presentation at Monday’s man- agement forum meeting explaining why the proposed site was the best site and why the alternatives proposed by Picker- ing weren’t feasible. “The property at Kingston and Dixie remains the primary site for us... It does provide the best response time to the highest number of residents in your community,” Mr. Armstrong said. The land for the new EMS station was purchased in November 2003 and the money for the construction costs were included in the 2005 budget. After the Province declared Pickering an emerg- ing growth centre, council wanted al- ternative sites looked at so the proposed one could be used for a more down- town-like development. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean resigned himself to the fact the proposed location would probably be passed at regional works committee Oct. 26, but still expressed his objections to the use of the Dixie and Kingston roads site. “We don’t have a lot to work with to create a downtown core,” he said. “Since we’ve been designated there has been a lot of interest from developers and build- ers to get into that downtown core.” Coun. McLean went on to say if a big box retailer moved in behind the EMS station it would create traffic congestion, lowering response time. A TIME FOR REFLECTION A.J. By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer AJAX — “Every time I look around here I see donors,” says Tracy Pater- son, her high heals clicking toward the birthing unit at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. From the birthing unit to the emer- gency department, the senior direc- tor of annual programs for the Rouge Valley Health Care System Founda- tion, points out enthusiastically the different things in the hospital made possible through community sup- port. “The donors have touched this hos- pital throughout the hospital,” adds Debbie McGarry, the foundation’s president and chief executive officer. “Everywhere you turn around, there’s a donor behind every piece of equip- ment.” In the birthing unit, there’s a rock- ing chair for new mothers, donated by the Durham Region Parents of Multiple Births Association, a dresser with baby supplies by the Ajax Opti- mist Club -- even equipment to keep new babies warm while they’re being cleaned and examined was made possible through donations. Elsewhere in the hospital, a C-arm used for hip examinations and anes- thetic equipment, worth more than $100,000, was bought with donations, as were operating tables, diagnostic imaging tools and emergency room equipment, such as rapid blood in- fusers, triple chamber IVs and life packs. In some cases, whole rooms have been made possible through com- munity support, such as the ‘Ontario Power Generation Nuclear Medicine Clinic’, built following a $1-million donation from OPG. The clinic uses radiation injections and a special camera to measure cell movement in a patient, unseen by regular X-rays. A pricey bus ticket to ride in Pickering? Concerns over senior, student fares By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham’s transit com- mittee has balked at a report that car- ried suggested bus fare increases. The staff report presented last week recommended adult fares be either $2.25 of $2.50 per trip, representing either a 12.5 or 25 per cent fare hike for Durham riders. Some regional coun- cillors were reluctant to raise seniors’ fares by 20 per cent or, in the case of Ajax-Pickering seniors, 66 per cent, from the current 90 cents to a rec- ommended $1.50. Cost for a seniors’ monthly pass was pegged at either $22.50 or $50. Of greater concern is a regional tax hike that could be in the eight- to 10- per cent range -- just for transit imple- mentation. Durham Region takes over the responsibility for providing transit in 2006. “There needs to be a lot of work done on what actually happens on Jan. 1,” said Maurice Brenner, a Picker- ing regional councillor and committee member, in an interview. “The taxpay- ers are just not going to accept that kind of a hit, especially when we want to encourage the use of transit.” Coun. Brenner says just changing the name to Durham Region Tran- sit and charging the same fare as in neighbouring areas won’t wash if the Region can’t provide a comparable level of service. With the transit take- over just two-and-a-half months away, he’s more than a little worried. “I think concern is an understate- ment,” said Coun. Durham transit manager Ted Gali- nis, in an interview, said it included the replacement of 35 transit vehicles, 21 per cent of the fleet, that are 18 years of age and older, at a cost of around $20 million. “We have to adjust their visioning to what we can afford, which is the pro- cess we’re in now,” he said. Durham finance commissioner Jim Clapp says a previous, seven- to eight- per cent forecast for a regional hike for transit alone will be adjusted “prob- ably upwards” in the end. A five-year Durham economic forecast, expected by the end of the November, is to in- clude transit costs, he said. Oshawa Councillor Nester Pidwer- becki, the com- mittee chairman, acknowledged the costs to ac- quire buses and for other capital needs in the next five years or so were “a little bit of a shock to a few people. “I don’t know why, because we’ve been stating all along that it’s going to be an expensive proposition,” he said in an interview. He says staff has been asked to re- consider the fare structure and see if there are other options in terms of an increase. Acknowledging the concerns about hiking seniors’ fares, Councillor Pidwerbecki said with rising fuel costs, the Region might not have a choice. “It’s not because we want to; it could be because we have to,” he said. The report from Durham staff rec- ommends that Durham Region Tran- sit become “a separate regional entity under the governance of a commis- sion. “Durham Transit operators have participated in the initial steps to iden- tify key issues to be addressed in de- veloping the first labour contract,” it states. Region staff is recommending adult monthly passes be transferable and available for use by more than one person, but not at the same time. Ella Joel, president and director of the auxiliary, said the group has supported the hospital since before it was built. The Ajax centre offi- cially opened in 1964 for a popula- tion a fraction of the size it’s serving now. Since the auxiliary began, it has given $4 million to the facility, as well as thousands of hours of volunteer time. “I don’t really think the communi- ty is aware of what the volunteers do,” said Ms. Joel. Auxiliary members vol- unteer to help staff, knit booties and tuques for newborns, run the hospi- tal’s room-to-room library program, hospital gift shop and second-hand store, 44/77 in Pickering Village, as well as fundraise and provide bur- saries to local high school students pursuing an education in medicine. Last year, auxiliary members provid- ed 42,000 hours of volunteer work. But, as the community develops and less people in Ajax have grown up with the hospital, interest dwin- dles. Ms. Joel said when she goes to Rouge Valley, she expects it to be there for her and, in turn, others should be there for it as well. “I have lived in Ajax since 1963 -- I just think the community needs to get behind the hospital,” said Ms. Joel. “If there’s a problem, when people get sick or if they’re having a baby, the hospital is the first place they go -- their hospital.” The residents of 44 Falby Crt. know that message well. For 14 years, those at the nearby apartment building have been holding a garage sale on the first Saturday after Labour Day to raise money for Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering. So far, $48,000 has been donated through the sale, in- cluding $7,014 this year alone. “Every year it’s gone up a little,” said Frank Fernandez, a Falby Court resident who helps with the sale. The sale features donated items ranging from furniture, glass, luggage, “you name it,” said Mr. Fernandez. Mr. Fernandez also a volunteers at the hospital and provides servic- es such as watering flowers, visiting with patients and making beds. “It’s just something to do that keeps you occupied and healthy,” he said. “If you get to 80 you’ll real- ize how important that little hospital across the street is. “I think it’s pretty obvious this hos- pital is necessary in the area and they should be supporting it.” The business community is mo- bilizing its support. Joan Wideman, president for the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade, said a really good community system attracts really good employees and having a good hospital nearby is part of the com- munity system. “We feel we are a loud lobbying voice and so we’re prepared to do that,” said Ms. Wideman. The group has sent letters to provincial minis- ters and expressed why the hospital is important for business. “Every community is fighting for hospitals and we’re fighting for ours,” said Ms. Wideman. Between the busi- nesses, millions of dollars in support has been raised, she said. Lenbrook Corporation in Pickering continues to offer its support. “Lenbrook employees work here five days a week -- that is the hospital close to us for our employees’ sake,” said Ms. Wideman, who is also Len- brook Corporation’s vice-president of employee services. As part of the company’s support, Lenbrook chief executive officer Gor- don Simmonds chaired the Founda- tion’s Vital Links Campaign to raise money for an expansion. The expansion, still pending pro- vincial approval, includes a new emergency department, a complex continuing care unit, expanded di- agnostic imaging and cardiac diag- nostic area, a larger ambulatory care unit and nine more mental health beds. With approval, construction would start next year and finish by 2008. The Vital Links Campaign start- ed in 1999 to raise the community’s share of the $59.1-million expansion. Just recently hospital officials an- nounced they have commitments for $20.7 million. Aspects of the cam- paign included corporate contribu- tions, individual private donations and smaller amounts of money raised through community events. “Really we were elated the commu- nity stepped up as much as they did,” said Rene Soetens, vice-chairman of the Vital Links Campaign. A/P PA GE 6 ◆NEWS ADVERTISER ◆OCTOBER 26, 2005 Some memories you just have to walk away from I closed a long open chap- ter of a difficult book yes- terday. After spending the weekend with my brothers and my Dad, playing poker and closing up the cottage, I drove back with an old ac- quaintance sitting in the back seat, my brother J.J.’s alumi- num walker. After a battle with liver cancer, J.J. died in June 1982, just six days shy of his twenty-fourth birthday. For a few months before his death he had begun to use a walker to help him get around. Always an athletic, supremely independent indi- vidual, he hated it. We hated it too. Then, and for the 23 years it hung in the rafters of the cot- tage garage it was, for me and I am sure many others, the ugly symbol of an ugly time. I couldn’t look at it, for even the briefest glimpse, without a tide of sadness washing over me. I can’t imagine what kind of relationship my father, who spent so much time in that garage, had with it. I suspect the only reason it was kept around at all was because he had used it. For all of its dark mojo, it was still a tie to J.J., and, as the years pass and the rest of our lives unfold, those ties become more tenuous and precious. We are loathe to release them, however mis- shapen. But this summer my Dad seemed ready to let it go. Iron- ically, it did not seem to want to go. He had tried to lose it in a series of yard sales, but, like something out of a work by Poe, it kept hanging around. Like some four-legged polter- geist it steadfastly remained while the tools, and the knick- knacks and the fondue sets went off with strangers. Sitting out in the drizzle and the cold. Sun- ning itself in misery. Happy as a clam. I think that was when I’d had enough. Suddenly I couldn’t wait to be shut of the damned thing. I tore its leg extensions off, stuffed it into the car then walked down to the cottage. It was waiting for me when it was time to go. It sat in the backseat and glared at me in the rear-view mirror the whole way home. It seemed to laugh at me. It knew all about my own health issues. It knew all about my fears. It couldn’t wait to tell me all about how my brother had suffered. It thought I was taking it home. I did take it home. I took it to a senior’s home. I took it to a place where it was no big deal. Nothing special. Just another piece of equipment, no better than a commode. A place where it wasn’t going to scare anybody anymore. You should have heard it squeal as I dropped it off amongst a pile of other walkers and canes. That was the first time in 23 years that I was able to look at that thing and laugh. In an era when, ‘balance the budget, balance the bud- get’ is the mantra off govern- ments and business leaders, it’s refreshing to see an edito- rial acknowledging the sense in investing money now to prevent much larger expendi- tures later. While cost may be the sim- ple answer to your question, “Why can we get treatment for cancer but not for autism?” the underlying issues are al- most as complex as the disor- der itself. Unlike cancer, a physi- cal ailment whose treatment clearly falls under the purview of health care, autism spec- trum disorder can require a myriad of services that cross the sectors of health, educa- tion, and social services. Al- though autism is neurologi- cal at its root, ABA (applied behavioural analysis, the only evidence-based and, argu- ably, most effective treatment for it) is not medical, per se, but an educational approach that can enable individuals with autism to develop the skills necessary for further learning and self-care. This begs the question of which government minis- try -- Health, Education, or Children and Youth Services -- should be responsible for covering the cost of ABA, and leaves all three in a position to hold up their hands and claim, ‘Not my department.’ I challenge Premier Dalton McGuinty and other govern- ment leaders to develop the courage to work together, look beyond the next election, and do what’s right not only for individuals with autism and their families, but for all of society. Leah Myers President Autism Society Ontario - Durham Chapter Daily activity at school a good start to optimal targets To the editor: The recent announcement by Education Minister Gerard Kennedy and Health Pro- motion Minister Jim Watson poses an interesting question: Can only 20 minutes of physi- cal activity a day really make a difference to the heart health of our children? Guaranteeing daily physi- cal activity in schools is cer- tainly a step to be applauded, and something the Heart and Stroke Foundation has long supported. But consider this: The Heart and Stroke Foundation Report Card on the Health of Canada’s Kids found that nearly one in three Canadian children (aged six to 12) weren’t getting the activity they needed to develop cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and flexibility. With more than 500,000 Ca- nadian children now tipping the scales toward obesity, this is clearly an idea that’s time has come. While the Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends that kids increase their time being physically active by at least 30 minutes per day, adding an- other 20 minutes at school - - on top of existing physical education classes -- is moving us toward optimal targets. And let’s not put the entire onus on the schools -- obe- sity is also rampant among our adult population. Parents can also encourage family physical activity time. Even going out for a walk is a step in the right direction. Make your voice heard at transit meetings T he regional bus will be taking the fuss as of Jan. 1, but the new fares -- and a tax increase to pay for a regionwide system may leave everyone feeling as though they’ve been taken for a ride. Durham officials figure the upgrade to a seamless regionwide system will result in an initial tax hit of from 8 to 10 per cent. And that’s not all. Fares for seniors could climb from a low of 20 per cent more to as much as 66 per cent. That’s because, in Ajax-Pickering for example, seniors now pay 90 cents per ride. Under the new system, the fare for seniors and students will possibly jump to $1.50. That means monthly passes are due to increase too. The costs are high, but so are the benefits. A single system would carry riders across the region on one fare and, in time, would be a cost-effective and environmentally attractive alternative to travel by automobile. A look at the incredible transit improvements made in York Region reveals what Durham could become in time. However, the initial changeover will not be a cheap proposition. It involves harmonizing transit labour contracts across the Region, and a five-year plan that would include replacing 35 transit ve- hicles -- 21 per cent of the fleet is 18 years or older -- at a cost of about $20 million. All of these suggestions are still on the table and no final deci- sions have been made. That’s why it’s important for those who have an interest in the regional system, to come out to one of the public meetings taking place in Durham over the next two weeks. The first meeting was in Oshawa last night, but Oshawans who couldn’t make it could attend another meeting nearby. Fa mily togetherness has taken on a whole new meaning for Ajax’s Arauz clan: father Jorge, mother Joyce, son Jorge Jr., 17, and daughters Jeanelle, 11, and Jaynnie, 13. Over the past five years, the family members have donned the traditional Ghia and trained together two or three times each week at the Family Karate Schools Association (FKSA). And, this month, they did some- thing else together: Each earned their ‘Shodanho’ black belts in karate, a pro- bationary designation, meaning they must continue to train and undergo testing in order to achieve their first- degree (dan) black belt. Patriarch Jorge is justifiably proud of the fact his family was the first in the history of the FKSA to achieve the black-belt designation. All five received their belts after a grading session with FKSA Sensei Lou DeAdder last month. “It felt very nice,” he says, during an interview in the family’s north Ajax living room. “It was a very good experi- ence to have all of us together when we were graded for the black belt. Every- one was congratulating us -- all five of us.” DeAdder, the head instructor at FKSA and a fifth-degree black belt, notes achieving a black belt is a long, arduous process, involving many years of hard work and commitment. So, for all five to achieve it at the same time is a rare feat, indeed. “I have been training in the martial arts for a long, long time and this is the first time I have witnessed it,” he says. “I am incredibly proud of them all. Rank is not given away but rather it is earned and the Arauz family earned their rank every step of the way. They are fabulous role models for all to fol- low and show what hard work and commitment will do for you.” Jorge notes it wasn’t the family’s goal to achieve their black belts at the same time. Five years ago, he and his wife were just looking for an athletic outlet for their children. Jorge had been in- volved in karate for a short time as a 20- year-old university student, but never rose above the white-belt designation. “We wanted to get our kids involved in some sort of martial art. We re- searched some of the schools and when we got to this one, our plan was to start with Jorge Jr. and wanted to get the others involved too,” he says. As most parents do, the Arauzes trailed their kids off to classes at the FKSA in Ajax and Pickering, starting in September 2000. Three months into their children’s classes, DeAdder en- couraged Jorge and Joyce to get in- volved, too. “I didn’t want to. Because of my work, I wasn’t going to get involved in that again. But, we started going to the club with them, we got hooked, too. Once we started, my wife and I took it very seriously,” says Jorge, who added the club had flexible class times, with most of his training sessions reserved for Sundays. Joyce says it was hard initially to get involved in training, but the more she went, the better she liked the martial art. “No. At first, no,” says Joyce, referring to her initial reaction. “It was hard at first. It’s a discipline. But, if you enjoy it, it’s fun.” Jorge Jr., 17, a Grade 12 student at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, says it’s been great having his parents join in with karate. “It was OK. It was cool when they came on and jumped in with the three of us,” he says, adding he plans to con- tinue his training to achieve the highest designations within the black belt pro- gram, as well as to learn other martial arts disciplines. Jaynnie, a Grade 8 student at St. Cath- erine of Siena Catholic School, says her friends were shocked upon learning that she was a black belt. “My friends were really happy,” states Jaynnie. “They couldn’t believe it because I was so young.” Not only do all the Arauzes train to- gether during the week, they all serve as instructors at the club, too. And, they’ve also competed together, joining other FKSA members on an excursion to Cedar Falls, Iowa last May. All five say they’re committed to continuing with karate and eventually earning the highest possible designa- tion within the black-belt realm. Forward line continues to click for Panthers Pickering juniors earn split on the road By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Implored to use his body more to his advantage, the Pick- ering Panthers’ Chris Jones didn’t dis- appoint on the weekend. Not only did 6-foot-4, 200-plus- pound Jones throw his weight around in games against the Markham Waxers and the Wexford Raiders, but the rug- ged winger also proved to be an offen- sive force as part of a forward unit that also includes A.J. Ward and Justin Fox. And, Panthers head coach John Winder couldn’t be happier. “He played like a man possessed,” said Winder of Jones who, along with Ward, joined the team in a cash trans- action with the Cobourg Cougars prior to the opening of the regular season. “He showed what he could do and he did it.” Winder noted he pulled Jones aside for a talk prior to the weekend games and his response was along the lines of what the club hopes Jones can provide -- solid work along the boards to go along with a strong offensive game. “He played strong -- exactly what we wanted him to do.” Jones was especially effective in the Panthers 5-4 victory over the Wexford Raiders at the Scarborough Arena Gar- dens in Toronto on Sunday night. The 20-year-old veteran scored a pair of goals, to go along with a pair of assists. The Jones-Fox-Ward unit continued to be the most lethal offensive weap- on against the Raiders, combining for eight points. “Last night, the three of them were a force out there,” acknowledged Winder. “We put them together a few weeks ago and they’re really getting comfort- able together. When they’re out there, they’re really dominating.” Moreover, the work of Fox, Jones and Ward also paid dividends on the power play, said Winder. Ward and Fox played up front with Andrew Dissanay- ake, while Jones worked the point. Of the Panthers’ three power-play mark- ers, that combination figured into two of them. Sunday’s victory also had huge ram- ifications in the standings as a loss would have dumped the Panthers into seventh place in the nine-team South Conference standings. With the vic- tory, the Panthers (8-7-0-0) are in a fourth-place tie with the Toronto Thun- derbirds. Although the Panthers came up short, 4-3, to the Waxers in Markham on Friday night, the Panthers put the first-place Waxers on notice with a strong effort. “We had a few defensive lapses that cost us, but I wasn’t disappointed with the effort Friday night. I said to the boys before the game that I wanted them to go hard and they did that,” said Winder. Winder was also impressed with the work of newcomer Tomek Bud- ziakowski, who joined the Panthers this weekend after coming over from the Bowmanville Eagles in a cash deal. “Budzy is going to help us in the strength department,” says Winder. “He hits, he’s very strong on the puck and he’s not afraid to get his nose dirty in the corners. He has lots of offensive skill and defensively he works his butt off. I think he’s going to be a big help.” Budziakowski, a natural centreman, was positioned between two other cen- tres, Chad Beals and Greg Riggs, during the weekend games and the combina- tion worked well, noted Winder. As for putting the 6-foot-2, 202- pound Budziakowski on a line with Riggs to carve out more space for the diminutive speedster, Winder was dis- missive. “Riggs creates his own space. He’s small, but he plays big. He’s as tough as they come. He’s 5-foot, 7-inches, but he doesn’t know it. He thinks he’s 6-foot and he plays that way,” said Winder. The Panthers won 5-4. Sports briefs OCTOBER 26, 2005 [ Hockey ] Lightning Ice another victory over Oakville DURHAM — Four games unbeaten and counting for the Durham Lightning. The National Women’s Hockey League team strung together its third consecutive victory with a 3-2 win over the Oakville Ice at the Ajax Community Centre on Saturday night. Lightning goaltender Desirae Clark notched her third victory and is 3-0-1 since taking over from Kendra Fisher, who’s out of the lineup due to injury. Pickering’s Latoya Clarke scored the winner for the Lightning with 6:37 remaining in the second period. Captain Joanne Eustace and Teresa Marchese drew assists. It took only 48 seconds for the Lightning to light the scoreboard, with Marchese scoring, assisted by blue-liner Pamela Pachal. Oakville scored late in the period to leave the contest tied after 20 minutes. Oakville scored early in the second stanza. Just less than four minutes later, Candice Moxley tied the score on an unassisted effort. Shortly after, Clarke scored the winner. The victory keeps the Lightning (4- 2-1-0) one point ahead of Oakville for second place in the Central Division standings. The Lightning trail first-place Brampton Thunder by two points, but have three games in hand. The Lightning are in Ottawa for back-to-back games next weekend against the East Division-leading Ottawa Raiders. Durham West peewees strike again for title DURHAM — The Durham West Lightning peewee ‘AA’ rep hockey team struck for its second tournament title of the year in Toronto recently, but the team had to work overtime to get it. Participating in the Toronto Aeros Fall Future Stars Tournament, the Lightning returned home with a gold medal after edging Brampton 2-1 in a shootout in the final. Brampton opened the scoring, but the Lightning rallied later in the game with a goal by Shannon Stoneburgh. The contest proceeded to a 3-on-3 overtime frame and again, the game remained dead- locked. Leah Semeniuk scored the lone shootout marker. Meghan Rourke gave up no goals during the shootout, performing well and staying cool under pressure. In the semifinal against Aurora, the teams settled nothing after three periods and 3-on-3 overtime. Durham West won the shootout 2-1 on goals by Tiffany Toong and Semeniuk. Julia Ouroumis earned the shutout in regulation play. In round-robin play, Durham West de- feated Willowdale 6-0 with goals by Stone- burgh, Toong, Semeniuk, Emily Marks, Diane Sawyer and Kaitlyn Malthaner. The Cougars captured the Ajax High School tournament crown by defeating Pickering’s Dunbarton High School Spartans 61-33 in the champi- onship final. Ironically, it was the Spartans that handed Notre Dame its first defeat of the season, 38-35, last Wednesday. Scoring for the Cougars in the tourney final were Nicholle McKenzie with 15, Rhea Pascal with 12, Monique Johnson with 11 and Catherine Bougou- lias with eight. Local youths hit stage to raise funds PICKERING — A group of local youths are banding together to raise money for the Hospital for Sick Children. The proceeds go to the James Mi- chael Rodriguez Foundation, which supports music therapy and juvenile brain tumour research.
