Those were a few of the more than 30 projects undertaken dur- ing the second annual Day of Car- ing on Tuesday. The United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge runs the event, in which volunteers com- plete jobs for various non-profit agencies. “Nothing will make you feel bet- ter than doing something for the community or for someone else,” United Way executive director Edna Klazek told volunteers dur- ing a kick-off breakfast Tuesday. Yo u’re going to make the commu- nities a better place. Congratulate each other and pat each other on the back.” Andrew Gordon of the Scotia- bank said two volunteers from each of the three Ajax branches and the three Pickering branches were taking part, and it wasn’t dif- ficult to find volunteers. “We want to give something back to the communities we work in,” he said. Cindy Lloyd, of Durham’s social services department, said between 30 and 35 people were taking part Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo Ontario Power Generation employees, from left, Nancy McLaughlin-Shaw, and Jennifer Knox offered their time Tuesday to participate in the United Way’s Day of Caring program. Pickering shows it really cares Will meet to discuss safety, other concerns By Mike Ruta Staff Writer PICKERING — Durham’s top cop and Pickering councillors are set to meet in a week or two as he settles into the job. It’s a good thing, because the two parties weren’t on the same page Monday night. Chief Vernon White answered questions posed by councillors, saying he’s not interested in mere- ly throwing more officers at prob- lems and doesn’t believe Pickering streets and parks are as dangerous as several councillors claim. Wa rd 1 City Councillor Doug Dickerson said residents don’t feel safe walking on streets or in parks because “miscreants” are drinking and taking drugs. “It often appears to be a prob- lem of youth criminality and often it is about youths who are bored... or have no other outlets,” Chief White replied. He favours working with schools to find alternate approaches to suspensions, believing “almost anything other than putting (stu- dents) on the street” is preferable. “What people are concerned about, chief, is safety in their neigh- bourhood,” said Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean, noting he spent 31 years as a Toronto cop. “They’re concerned about safety in the parks and they’re concerned about traffic issues.” Coun. McLean said the prob- lem with youth committing crimes shouldn’t be minimized, saying some are drinking, causing mis- chief to City property, breaking into houses and throwing stones through windows. “Can I get your commitment, chief, that this will be one of your top priorities not only in Pickering but in Ajax and all of Durham?” Coun. McLean asked. Chief White said such acts are committed by specific groups across Canada, not just in Picker- ing. “That’s a bigger issue than just crime; I’m afraid it’s more about society,” he said. “I don’t want to Pickering, chief spar The Pickering 24 PA GES ✦ Pressrun 47,900 ✦ Metroland Durham Region Media Group ✦ SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2005 ✦ Optional delivery $6 / Newsstand $1 LEAVING CANADA FAR BEHIND Durham man finds life in Africa takes some getting used to... Describing it as one of the darkest days in Pickering’s history, councillors unani- mously endorsed a motion brought forward by Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner. It states that the City is seeking status in the case, partly to “describe and ex- plain the significant social, environmental and financial risks” Pickering and its resi- dents were exposed to. As a condition of sentencing, if Hydro One is found guilty, Pickering wants the fine awarded to the City. The Environment Ministry recently charged Hydro One, two years after tens of thousands of li- tres of mineral oil spilled following a transformer rup- ture at the Cherry- wood Transformer Station. The maxi- mum fine is $6 mil- lion. Coun. Brenner said the spill re- sulted in “frantic” residents, a school “in total chaos” at not knowing what had occurred, and City staff scrambling to help contain and clean up the spill, a pro- cess that lasted for three or four weeks. His motion states that any fine the City received would be used toward projects in the Pickering Waterfront and Frenchman’s Bay Five-Year Imple- mentation Plan. “I think that particular day is embedded in everybody’s mind,” added Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean. Mayor Dave Ryan de- scribed the motion as “most appropriate. He said it could be a precedent-setting case if the funds were allocated back to the affected commu- nity.” Hydro One spokesman Al Manchee, in a recent e-mail, said, “Hydro One used the very best technology and practices in responding to the spill. “Weirs were constructed, vacuum trucks deployed and absorbent material (booms, pads) were used at several locations along Pine Creek. Hydro One successfully re- claimed approximately 98 per cent of the 30,000 litres of the spilled mineral oil that made its way off-site of our transformer location. The mineral oil was analysed by a properly accredited laborato- ry and classified as non-PCB. There was no risk to public health.” The case comes to the Ontario Court of Justice in Whitby tomorrow, Oct. 24. Pickering wants share if fines laid Pickering provider marks milestone PICKERING — Verid- ian employees achieved an important safety milestone recently, as they surpassed 1 million hours worked with no lost time injuries. The company’s 150 mem- ber staff has worked almost four full years without a lost- time accident. “We are very appreciative of our employees’ commit- ment to safety,” says Michael Angemeer, Veridian’s presi- dent and CEO. “Our staff often works in less than optimal conditions. Just last Thursday many of our lines-persons worked in high winds and driving rain to repair power lines downed by falling tree limbs. Following safe work practices during these types of emergency conditions re- quires discipline. I congratu- late all of Veridian’s staff for their professional approach to the work that they do.” Veridian hits 1 million hours without injury Maurice Brenner and again, it wasn’t difficult to find volunteers. “Being a regional agency, we service a lot of these people. We try to put back into the community,” Ms. Lloyd said. The Region volunteers were separated into two groups, with one working at a townhouse and the other helping with Girls Inc. Ms. Klazek noted that last year volunteers from the social services department applied a lot of paint onto each other, as well as the walls. During the course of the day, “hundreds of gal- lons of paint” would be applied, Ms. Klazek noted. “Many of you will get intimately acquainted with paint.” Don Terry, a spokesman with Ontario Power Generation, which sponsored the kick-off breakfast, praised the volunteer efforts. “OPG is very committed to corporate citizenship. I’m pleased to see a room of such like-minded people,” he said. “You’ll walk away today with a great feeling. I hope you carry this on.” Lisa Bruce, the executive director for the PRYDE Learning Centres, said, “It’s definitely one of our very favourite days of the year. “We heard about this last year and we didn’t know what to expect. We met the volunteers and showed them around. By midday, we had new floors and a play area outside,” Ms. Bruce stated. Last year, 26 projects were done, but the number increased to 34 this year. DRIVEN, or Durham Region’s Intimate-Partner Vi- olence Empowerment Network, seeks to bring all the part- ners involved in dealing with a domestic violence incident together under one roof. Devised by Durham Regional Police detectives Tracey Marshall and Cathy Bawden, who saw the success of the San Diego Family Justice Centre where 100 domestic vio- lence professionals are together in one building, DRIVEN will be the Durham answer to the San Diego solution. To o often, women who are subject to domestic violence, face too many challenges at a very vulnerable time in their lives. From seeing health-care professionals, to dealing with local shelters, to handling law and order issues, to con- cerns about child-care and their children’s well-being, the list is a long and difficult one. And the sheer effort required to handle all these problems while trying to cope with the pain of the original domestic violence incident, can be too much. That’s where DRIVEN comes in. Women -- who make up the vast majority of victims of domestic violence -- will be able to work out every step of the process in just one building where professionals will be close at hand to offer help. The streamlined process removes the worry and will allow victims to deal with their emotional and physical trauma. The idea is an ambitious one, but it’s a commitment detectives Marshall and Bawden have made and the pair, who have years of experience working with victims of do- mestic violence, are determined to see it through. A recent meeting brought out 60 people involved in various aspects of dealing with domestic violence and its consequences. Professionals, such as Luke’s Place executive director Carol Barkwell and Sandra McCormack, executive direc- tor of Denise House, see DRIVEN as a great idea. Ms. McCormack concedes it will take a lot of co-operation between agencies to make it a success. DRIVEN is an idea whose time has come in Durham. Organizations owe it to the clients they serve to make it a reality. Ta x es are putting the suburbs out of reach To the editor: Re: ‘Residents face ‘hit’ from reassessment.’ We j ust moved into a brand new house in north Ajax less than one year ago. The estimated value of our house as as- sessed by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation upon closing was $260,400. We just received our 2005 prop- erty assessment notice and we are absolutely outraged. Our home has been reassessed at $314,000. That’s an astronomi- cal increase of $53,600 in less than one year. Like many young couples and families who flock to the suburbs from the GTA to purchase a more affordable home, we did the same. However, after four years of living in Ajax, we are seriously asking ourselves what’s the point? With the increased cost of gas and the already elevated Durham property taxes com- pared to that of Toronto, sadly, the commute hardly seems worth it anymore. Board decision to outlaw lunch snacks gives father pause for thought T his year my daughter’s school outlawed a pre-packaged grocery store item that many parents, in- cluding myself, would pack away for their kids to eat for their mid-day meal. These packages include a variety of snacks. Two of Rebekah’s favourites were kielbasa, crackers and cheese and the salsa and chip variety. When I first read that these lunch products were banned I thought it strange. After all they contain no peanut products so nut allergies could not be the concern. Then, my wife Heather spelled it out for me. “They’re junk,” she said. “I can’t be- lieve you even buy those for the kids.” Heather knows a lot about healthy foods because she suffers from food al- lergies and must be mindful of what she eats. As a result she maintains a healthy diet consisting of vegetables, very little meat and even less dairy. Pre-packaged foods do not exist in her world. As a result of Rebekah’s new lunch policies I have gotten more creative with her midday meal. Sandwiches, soups, fruits and rice “crisps” have become the new norm in her lunch bag. This new attitude is far different from when I was a student 30 years ago of the then Durham Board of Education. Back in those days peanut butter and jam was the norm and later in high school fries and gravy were the top-selling item on the menu. We all need to eat healthier so ban- ning unhealthy lunch choices may have seemed harsh to me at first but it soon made sense. After all these years I again was being taught a valuable lesson by the local school system. The Durham Region health depart- ment is ‘Inviting Us Along,’ a program encouraging residents to increase their vegetable and fruit consumption to five to 10 servings a day. Their timing couldn’t be better, especially consider- ing my recent lunch dilemma. I realize the eating habits we establish today for our kids will benefit them well into the future. Snack foods and other high-fat menu choices may be tasty but tasty is temporary. Healthy is long-term and that’s what I want for my whole family. They built a large log house and raised nine chil- dren here. George was trained as a teacher and as a Baptist minister. In Upper Canada he became ac- tive as a minister. Having a different view from the Church as to whether or not ministers should be paid, he established his own following. Later he became an elder of the Church as well as the moderator of the Baptist Association. He remained active as a minister until his death in 1857. George was also chairman of the local school district. Rev. Barclay, as well, was a lead- er of the opposition to the power- ful Family Compact that governed Upper Canada at that time. He took an active part in The Mackenzie Re- bellion of 1837. George Barclay was one of Pickering’s most active and influential pioneers. Janet and George retired to a beautiful little cottage they built on a corner of their property, where Ja net lived until she died in 1866. The property had been in the Bar- clay family for 150 years until it was expropriated by the federal govern- ment in 1970. To day Laurie Barclay and her husband Gary live in Tullis cottage. The federal government, the last landlord, sent the Barclays an evic- tion notice and were to demolish the cottage in June 2005. There are people who believe this should be saved and restored as a Heritage Property, to remind us all just what a fascinating heritage we have in Pickering. Wonders if $100,000 could be better spent DURHAM — Durham regional councillors are of two minds on the issue of remaining in the Greater To ronto Marketing Alliance. At the Sept. 28 council meet- ing, councillors agreed to release the second half of their 2005 fund- ing support, $50,000, to the GTMA. Councillors at the Sept. 21 finance and administration committee meeting grilled GTMA representa- tives on what the group is provid- ing Durham in return for $100,000 per year, with several suggesting it wasn’t worth the investment. The GTA regions and Toronto are members of the marketing organi- zation. The full council endorsed Scu- gog Mayor Marilyn Pearce’s idea, presented at the committee level, to have a staff report prepared on what the Region’s own economic development department could provide if given $100,000 per year. The report is expected at the Nov. 2 finance committee meeting. “If you want to be in the game you have to ante up,” Oshawa Re- gional Councillor Brian Nicholson said, agreeing, however, there are questions about how the GTMA is promoting Durham. “You don’t throw the whole process out be- cause you’re unhappy with the level of service.” Fellow Oshawa Regional Coun- cillor April Cullen disagreed, “If I’m going to be on the team, I don’t want to be on the bench, I want to be on the field,” she said. So it’s really no surprise that according to the latest Gallup Survey, 90 per cent of all people who go to a chiropractor say their care was effective. Chiropractic care centres on the spinal column and the nervous system and offers a “whole body” approach to healing. It makes sense once you think about it. The spinal column houses your spinal cord and spinal nerves branch out from between your vertebrate to areas all over your body. A misalignment of a vertebrate may cause a pinched or inhibited spinal nerve that may result in headaches, lower back pain and numerous other ailments. That’s why spinal adjustments can help the body heal more effectively. By using physical examinations and X-rays when necessary, chiropractors detect, locate and correct spinal misalignment (also called subluxation). Rather than treating just your symptoms, chiropractors are trained to find the root of the problem and correct it. Once the problem is identified, the solution varies. In addition to manual and instrumental adjustments, your chiropractor may recommend other procedures or health regimens. Remember, chiropractic care works with your body’s natural strengths. Care to know more about chiropractic? Now that you know why chiropractic is so effective for so many people, why not make an appointment for an initial consultation to talk about the type of care and patient services the office provides. Yo ung women and children stand between the lanes at stoplights, trying to sell motorists everything from toilet paper to soccer balls. Those asking for spare change or some food can be found there too. Mark Simmons is not in Canada anymore. He’s r eminded when the occasional goat or chicken enters the scene, wandering into the traffic. Mr. Simmons is in Accra, Ghana in western Africa. A world away from the tidy, suburban condo in Courtice he called home just a few weeks ago. “There are many beautiful homes and buildings in Accra, but they’re often right beside a building that is abandoned and de- crepit... There are several hospitals and uni- versities and foreign embassies, but small herds of goats and sheep freely graze on their front lawns,” he says. “It almost feels like two different cities -- one rich and one poor -- have been mixed together.” With just two weeks of his five-month vol- unteer placement at the West African AIDS Foundation (WAAF) behind him, the Dur- ham resident recently shared in an e-mail his first impressions and experiences. His host family -- Steve and Eva Osei - - has been very welcoming. Mr. Osei is a civil servant, while Ms. Osei stays at home. Mr. Simmons says the middle-aged couple is relatively well-off and their apartment is quite nice by Ghanaian standards. “They have a VCD player, a CD player, a microwave and, most importantly, a clean, comfortable washroom,” he says. Mr. Simmon’s room at the Oseis is simple -- a twin bed, a night table and a dresser -- and it also has a ceiling fan, which because he is not so fond of the heat, is what he values most. The heat was one aspect of the trip he wasn’t looking forward to. “We arrived on a relatively cool evening so my first thought was ‘this isn’t that hot, it’s actually pretty comfortable.’ It wasn’t until the next day that I found out that this summer’s heat and humidity in Ontario was nothing compared to the heat and humidity in Accra,” he says. “And it’s not even the hot season yet.” The combination of heat and humidity saps your energy, he says, and even brushing his teeth or ironing makes him sweat. The sweating has decreased so he thinks he’s get- ting used to the weather. In addition to the familiar comforts at his new home, Mr. Simmons was also surprised to find Coke and Pepsi are available every- where (although he hasn’t been able to find his beverage of choice yet -- Diet Pepsi). Many stores sell his preferred brands of shav- ing cream and shampoo; several restaurants offer pizza and burgers; and there is even an ice cream parlour. Plus, he often hears the familiar sound of the ice cream truck as it makes it ways through his neighbourhood. ❑ ❑ ❑ Before leaving for Ghana, Mr. Simmons did a two-week placement at the AIDS Commit- tee of London, which is the Canadian partner agency for WAAF. While there, he saw pic- tures of the office so the place felt somewhat familiar when he arrived. “The people at WAAF were very friendly and welcoming,” he says. “I knew right away that I was going to enjoy working there.” He is impressed by how much they do with what little they have. “It speaks very highly of the organization and the staff that they can do so much good work with such limited resources,” Mr. Sim- mons says. He’s working on setting up a network, but the bulk of his first week at WAAF was orien- tation and meeting people. “If you want to be successful in Ghana you need to build strong relationships, so a lot of my time is spent talking with staff, clients and other stakeholders about what their needs and expectations are,” he says. The staff has already given him a nick- name: Mr. I.T. ❑ ❑ ❑ Although his journey has just begun, Mr. Simmons has already learned a few things, including watches are optional and don’t believe everything you read. The first lesson was an adjustment for him. “(I’ve learned) just how flexible and adaptive I can be. At home, I used to live my life by my watch, but here in Ghana sched- ules and appointments are much less rigid, and time has a different meaning,” he says. “I don’t even bother wearing my watch now and I only check the time a few times a day.” The second lesson comes from having read and learned about Ghana from a Western perspective, which sometimes doesn’t match the Ghanaian perspective and other times it does. “I was out at a restaurant with a couple of Ghanaians and hissed at a waiter to get his attention. I had read in a few places that this is what is done, but the people I was with looked at me with shock and embarrass- ment,” he says. They explained he could have just said, “excuse me.” However, later while at a market people were hiss- ing all over the place to get people’s attention. ❑ ❑ ❑ Mr. Simmons doesn’t miss home too much yet, but thinks it will be hard to be away at Christmas. His 30th birthday was shortly after he arrived, Sept. 30, and the Oseis and his colleagues made celebrating it away from home much easier. His host parents made him etoh, a traditional birthday break- fast of mashed yams with peppers and eggs, and gave him a traditional Ghanaian shirt. The WAAF staff had his birthday an- nounced on a local radio station and had a ‘beer and Coke’ party for him in the afternoon. “We sat outside under a tree with a drink and talked, they sang the Happy Birthday song to me, and at the end Kakra (Ankobiah, the WAAF program direc- tor) poured a bottle of water on me -- appar- ently it’s another Ghanaian birthday tradi- tion,” Mr. Simmons says. “It was a very nice birthday and it made me feel very welcome.” newsdurhamregion.com searchkeyword:africaghanasimmons Follow Mark’s BLOG drinfo.ca/simmonsblog.html durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, OCTOBER 23, 2005 PAGE 11 A/P =`^_k`e^ 8@;J `e8]i`ZX 1BSUPGB%VSIBNNBOT WPMVOUFFSJOUFSOTIJQJO UIF3FQVCMJDPG(IBOBNot in Canada anymore Durham resident Mark Simmons is experiencing a whole other world during his five-month stay in Accra, Ghana. Unit 4, Whitby Stop-smoking focus clears things up By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — They can’t smoke in restaurants, bars or class and now some of Durham’s post-sec- ondary students are looking to cut smoking from their lives forever. Following requests from stu- dents, Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Te chnology (UOIT) are preparing to launch a ‘Leave the Pack Be- hind’ program to help post-sec- ondary students stop smoking. “This is the first year the stu- dents have come to us and asked us about the Leave the Pack Be- hind program,” said Katherine La- zenby, director of health services for the college and UOIT. “Leave the Pack Behind really uses peer- on-peer education.” Recently, the provincial Liberal government announced it will pro- vide $600,000 to extend the post- secondary quit smoking program to 250,000 students on 18 campus- es across Ontario by March 2006. Durham College and UOIT plan to start the program in January, which will likely include posters, displays, wellness booths, educa- tional brochures, smoking diaries and information on existing quit- smoking support groups. As a registered nurse, Ms. Lazen- by said she’s excited about starting the program. “These are young kids in here and you just know what’s ahead of them if they keep smoking,” said Ms. Lazenby, referring to diseases caused by smoking such as em- physema. Getting more students to quit is also good for the campus. “It’s a much cleaner environ- ment,” said Mr. Lazenby. “It’s a dirty habit. (Quitting smoking) makes for a much cleaner environment.” Ta king health, fitness and gener- al wellness more seriously, as well as being faced with more smoke- free environments, could be influ- encing students’ recent interest in the quit-smoking program, said Ms. Lazenby. She added although the facil- ity does not keep numbers on how many students smoke, there doesn’t appear to be any real pat- tern on the amount of students who smoke each year. Dressed in a blue police ball cap and windbreaker, the Grade 5 student at Prince Albert Public School was one of five finalists who read their Police Chief for a Day essay to Durham District School Board trustees at their meeting Oct. 17. The contest win- ner, Vanessa Foran, was wearing a custom-made police uniform as she finished her day as chief, which included flying in a heli- copter and visiting different po- lice departments. “The parents and educators of these five children really deserve to be congratulated,” said Moe Pringle, co-chairman of the po- lice appreciation committee. Rod Piukkala, deputy chief of Durham Regional Police, said he hopes to one day see some of the kids in the audience replace their police ball caps with real con- stable hats. “I think being a police officer would be very tough, but very rewarding,” said Anon Murray from Bayview Heights in Picker- ing while reading her speech. Lindsay Ross of Sunset Heights in Oshawa said police chiefs start off as cops and have probably seen a lot of bad things, such as people who hurt children and seniors, but have to remind them- selves most people are good. Anika Johnson-Roberts, from Dr. Roberta Bondar in Ajax, said although police are not liked by some people, they are helping people in the community by be- coming an officer. The speech presentations were wrapped up with Vanessa’s win- ning piece, which she’ll read again during Durham Region’s upcoming third annual Police Ap- preciation Night. “A police officer helps people, kids, babies and teenagers,” said Va nessa. “The next time you see a police officer, remember they are there to help you and your family so say thanks and give them the respect they deserve.” Vanessa encouraged other stu- dents to participate in the contest next year because they too could win. The contest is open to all Grade 5 public school students and ro- tates each year between the Cath- olic and public board. Partici- pants were first chosen by their school and then by their school board superintendent. The final five contestants presented to a panel of judges Sept. 29 at police headquarters. The Durham West Lightning midget 91s ‘AA’ are actually bantam age but, because of back-to-back provincial titles, petitioned the On- tario Women’s Hockey league and were allowed to move up to the midget competitive group. Some girls had prepared by attending a pre-season camp in Vermont in September as well as training with Karen Hughes and against the Durham intermediate ‘AA’ team in many practices. Losing their opening game at the Solid Goal event in a hard- fought battle against Kitchener 4-1, Durham tied their second game 1-1 with Aurora and finished the tournament with a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Sarnia. The club missed the tournament playoff round. “These girls are motivated and hard-working” Dino Caggiula stat- ed. “They will work well together and are pumped for the season.” Although it is their first season as midgets, the team members have played together with much success as bantams and are looking to have a very respectable season at the new level. “They have nothing to prove, we know they’re good players and just wanted them to be where they could get a good shot at quality competition,” said Caggiula. “Playing with players missing for various a reason, including Alan- nah Wakefield, recovering from a concussion, was challenging but we played well. The girls are really starting to gel as a unit.” Meanwhile, the Durham West intermediate ‘AA’ team also ap- peared in the tournament, finish- ing as semifinalists. Brought down by a single goal in a hard-fought game against London, it was a bit- tersweet weekend for the team, following the announcement of six members to the Team Ontario Under 18 team earlier in the week. The six will play at the Cana- dian National Under-18 Cham- pionships in Salmon Arm, B.C., next month. Selected members are: Jenn Wakefield, Cristen Allen, Natalie Spooner (Team Red) and Lindsay Hill, Tara Watchorn and Alison Williams (Team Blue). Ajacian signs one-year contract with pro lacrosse club AJAX — Ajax goalkeeper Gee Nash will be keeping balls out of the net for the Colorado Mam- moth for the upcoming pro sea- son. The National Lacrosse League team signed Nash -- the 2004 NLL Goaltender of the Year -- to a one-year contract that will keep him in a Mammoth uniform for a third season. The 27-year-old is a six-year-veteran of the league and has represented the We st Division at the NLL All-Star Game in each of the last two seasons. “We’re very pleased to have Gee Nash back on this team,” Colorado general manager Steve Govett said in a press re- lease. “He’s been so good and so consistent. It is a tremendous lift for our players to take the field every night knowing that their goaltender is going to give them a great chance to win.” The 6-foot, 190-pounder had the third best goals-against aver- age (11.16 GAA) during the 2005 season and the third best save percentage (77.4 per cent) in the league. In 2004 Nash led the league with a .790 save percentage earn- ing a first-team All-Pro selec- tion. Nash back in net for the Colorado Mammoth Gee Nash Guerrieri ends race series in third place Pickering driver looks for ride in Formula Atlantic series next year PICKERING — Finishing near the top of his class in the Formula Ford Zetec Cooper Tires Cham- pionship Series may pay off for Pickering driver Chris Guerrieri. After finishing the season with two races at the renowned Vir- ginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia, Guerrieri has been approached by several top teams in the For- mula Atlan- tic series, although an offer has not been pro- ferred as yet. Guer- rieri locked up a third- place overall finish in the racing series after a sixth-place finish in Race 1, followed by a fourth-place effort in the second race of the weekend. Guerrieri started the first race of the weekend 12th after being bumped off the track in the open- ing laps of qualifying by Califor- nia resident Ira Fierberg. Guerrieri posted the second fastest lap in the race meaning he qualified for the second grid position in Race 2. Race 2 started on the first dry track of the weekend where Guer- rieri took the early lead. By lap 3 Guerrieri’s teammate and cham- pionship winner, Jay Howard, was on his tail after starting farther back in the pack. Howard used the draft of Guerrieri’s car and passed him going into to Turn 1 to take the lead and hold on to it. Nearing the end of the race Guerrieri was in third position after battling with Alan Scuito for second when a car in lapped traffic spun out several metres in front of him. Guerrieri was forced on to the grass runoff but was able to regain control and finish fourth. Guerrieri’ consistent style of rac- ing saw him in the top-five finish- ers for almost every race this year, including a third-place finish out of 40 competitors in Cleveland, Ohio in June. Howard finished first in the final standings with 307 points, while Joey Foster was next with 215. Guerrieri’s 180 points secured third. The Raiders took their show on the road to the Brampton Jason Abraham Memorial ‘AAA’ tournament. Facing the hometown Battalion, the Ajax- Pickering atoms battled from start to finish only to drop a 5-2 decision. Ajax-Pickering earned a bye into the championship game after going 4-0 in round-robin play. In Game 1, the Raiders downed Waterloo 6-2. In their second game, the Raiders cooled down a fast-skating Whitby team 6-3. In Game 3, the Raiders faced a physical Battalion squad, winning 3-1. They finished prelimi- nary action with a 3-2 victory over the Oakville Rangers. The Raiders also played in London last month, losing the final to the London Junior Knights, 3-1. In the semifinal, the Raiders faced the Kitchener Rangers. After trailing 1-0, the Raiders battled back and won 4-2. In round-robin play the Raiders faced off first against the hometown London Junior Knights. In what could only be described as a fast-paced, ex- citing game, the Raiders and Knights skated to a 2-2 tie. In Game 2, the Raiders faced Elgin Middlesex. After dominating their opponent for most of the game, it wasn’t until the third period that the Raiders were able to solve Elgin Middlesex’s goaltender, eventually earning a 2-0 victory. The Raiders eclipsed Sun County by a convincing 4-1 margin. This set the stage for a battle with Waterloo for first place in their divi- sion. The Raiders came out flying and won 5-1 to advance to the semifinal. Max Tjin and Teddy Lusted shared the goaltending duties and were out- standing at both tournaments. Other team members are Darin Shore, Dakoda Crawford, Mackenzie Heber, Kal McFarland, Stephen Ful- lerton, David Lepka, Michael Sharp, Adrian Brown, Matt Adams, Dylan Kingdon, Adamm Gardner, Jack Vau- tour, Justin Bean and Jonothan Pros- kos. Ky le Shore, Ron Bean and Rich Lepka coach the team. Cal Lusted is the trainer and Teresa Carroll the manager.
