OMB hearing
rescheduled to April
By Danielle Milley

PICKERING — Greenwood resi-
dents are going to have to wait a
little longer to find out if an appli-
cation that would quadruple their
hamlet is going to be allowed.
The Ontario Municipal Board
prehearing for the Berrywoods
Fa r ms Inc. expansion that would
see the building of a subdivision
of 381 homes took place Thursday
morning, but because of a recently
launched court action it has been
rescheduled.
Berrywood was served with no-
tice of the court matter Dec. 23,
Berrywoods’ lawyer T.R. Lederer
told OMB member Reid Rossi.
The matter is to begin in a Dur-
ham court the week of March 7, but
Mr. Lederer said it could be delayed
depending on how long it takes
them to prepare.
The City’s solicitor John Reble
explained after the hearing was ad-
journed that the City, the Greater
To ronto Airports Authority and
Transport Canada are asking the
court to say the OMB should not be
hearing the matter because of the
Province’s greenbelt legislation.
“The application filed by Berry-
woods is invalid,” Mr. Reble said.
Berrywoods, also known as
Tribute Homes/Runnymede De-
velopment Corporation, filed ap-
plications with the City March 19
to amend a zoning bylaw and to
request approval of a draft subdivi-
sion plan.
Pickering never dealt with the
application, saying it fell under the
Province’s Greenbelt Protection
Act (Bill 27) and the moratorium on
land-use planning changes outside
urban settlements that accompa-

Ajax youth shot
dead in police
confrontation
By Jeff Mitchell
Staff Writer
AJAX — Durham Region-
al Police continue to investi-
gate possible links between
violent robberies here and
the death of a 17-year-old
Ajax youth who was shot
by To ronto police on New
Year’s Eve.
But officers here aren’t
saying much yet about
whether the gang involved
in the robbery of a Toronto
clothing store may also have
been active in Durham.
“I can tell you we’re at the
initial stages of the investi-
gation,” said robbery Detec-
tive Adam Kelly.
“We’re looking at our
outstanding robbery inci-
dents.”
The Ajax youth, 17-
year-old Randy Evans, was
among a gang of four who
burst into a Danforth Av-
enue clothing store Dec.
31 and robbed it. As the
suspects emerged from the
store, they were confronted
by To ronto police. Accord-
ing to reports, Mr. Evans
raised his shotgun and was
hit by a bullet in the chest.
His three accomplices
ran off. Mr. Evans died
as a result of the gunshot
wound. The incident is now
being probed by the Special
Investigations Unit, which
looks into police incidents
involving injury or death.
The SIU assigned nine in-
vestigators to the case and
have identified one Toronto
cop as a subject officer.
Ajax has been the scene
of a number of violent rob-
beries lately. The clerk, who
complied with the demands
that he hand over cash, was
stabbed several times. He
survived the assault.
Det. Kelly said people
working night shifts alone
are particularly vulnerable
to robbery and assault.
“I think it should be
shocking to the communi-
ty, the level of violence,” he
said.

Teen alleged
to have hopped
into idling car
PICKERING — A short
pursuit through a Pickering
neighbourhood ended with
a stolen car being lodged in
a snowbank and a teen fac-
ing charges Thursday.
Durham Regional Police
say a man had started his
car and left it to warm up in
the driveway of his Duberry
Drive home around 8:15
a.m. Thursday.
Police say a passing teen
hopped into the idling car
and drove away with it, pick-
ing up a couple of friends at
a nearby high school along
the way.
The cruise was inter-
rupted by officers, who at-
tempted to pull the car over,
but the driver drove away.
The escape ended
abruptly when the car left
the road and slammed into
a snowbank at Linwood and
Parkdale street, police said.
A 15-year-old boy is
charged with possession of

Durham students
worries SEAC
By Mike Ruta

DURHAM — Equipment
for special-needs students
is available, but that doesn’t
mean it’s in pupils’ hands
and ready to help them
learn, says a public school
board committee.
Marlene Avery and Donna
Edwards, members of the
Durham District School
Board’s special education
advisory committee (SEAC),
on Tuesday called upon the
board to create board-wide
policies and procedures on a
number of technology fronts.
In the absence of them, they
told trustees at the meeting,
school staff is on its own
when it comes to document-
ing, loading and distributing
equipment such as laptop
computers.
Ms. Avery in an interview
said in November more
than 100 students were still
waiting for their laptops to
be loaded with software.
She notes that the students,
mostly in high schools, had
already gone through more
than half the semester with-
out the computers.
“Until people understand
what technology will do for
these kids, they
won’t make it a
priority,” she says.
The SEAC
members said the
problem is schools
don’t have a tem-
plate to direct
them. And some,
concerned a stu-
dent might lose a
laptop, aren’t al-
lowing them to go
home, limiting a student’s
potential.
“The onus is on the school,
so if the school doesn’t have
the will or the knowledge to
do this, it doesn’t get done,”
Ms. Avery says.
SEAC is calling for the
documentation of a students’
needs in individual educa-
tion plans and more inten-
sive training for teachers and
other educational workers.
As well, the committee says
repairs and service to equip-
ment needs to be completed
faster, and the board needs
an audit process to ensure
students get the most out of
the technology.
Ms. Avery says it’s trou-
bling that some students’
laptops are being shared in
classrooms where there are
not enough computers for
everyone.
When the November back-
log of software
loading was
brought to the
board’s attention,
Ms. Avery says the
issue was quickly
addressed.
Don McLean,
the board’s spe-
cial education su-
perintendent, in
an interview says
that’s because the
board had hired a technology
staff member to do the work.
“We did have a backlog;
we acknowledge that and
recognize that,” he says.
He suggested SEAC’s rec-
ommendations
are not required.
“Most of them,
I would say, we
have already ad-
dressed and are
working on,” Mr.
McLean said, add-
ing “all of them.”
Citing figures
the SEAC mem-
bers presented on
the rising number
of students receiving special-
education funding for equip-
ment, he said the board has
done a good job “addressing
the explosion that’s taken
place” in terms of equipment
needs.
In the 1998/99
school year, enrol-
ment claims were
filed for 51 stu-
dents at a cost of
just over $92,000.
However, in the
current school
year, there have
already been 457
claims with an
equipment cost of
$1.12 million.
As Mr. McLean spoke at
the meeting, Ms. Avery often
shook her head.
She says “what really
bothered me” was when Mr.
McLean summed up the
group’s presentation as the
issue of if a student can take
a laptop home. She also was
concerned that he said it was
not out of the ordinary for
a student-assigned laptop to
be used by other pupils.
“It’s totally against the
guidelines set by the Minis-
try of Education,” Ms. Avery
says. “That equipment is pur-
chased based on a student’s
needs and should not be part
of the regular complement of
the classroom.”

DURHAM — Durham’s
public elementary schools
are getting a belated Christ-
mas present.
Durham District School
Board trustees approved a
$3,000 boost to school block
budgets at Tuesday’s stand-
ing committee meeting, an
outlay of over $315,000. The
full board must endorse the
idea later this month.
The board received the
money from the provincial
government as part of the
Keeping Good Schools Open
initiative. It was generated
by 17 board schools that
met the ministry’s funding
criteria. However the board
was already spending that
money, and $500,000 more,
to support smaller and rural
schools. As a result, it has
leeway on how to spend the
grant money, and trustees
in November decided to let
staff advise how best to use
it.
If approved by the full
board, the money would “be
used to augment elementary
instructional supplies and
learning materials, through
an initiative to be directed
by the programs depart-
ment,” according to the re-
port on the board agenda.
“I wouldn’t want it to go
towards equipment or of-
fice supplies or paper,” said
Uxbridge Trustee Gordon
Baxter, concerned schools
might use the money as they
see fit if not given direction.
Programs superintendent
Luigia Ayotte said staff could
draft a memo specifically
outlining how the money is
to be used.
Pickering Trustee Sherry
Croteau received confir-
mation that the money for
the schools was a one-time
deal, and was not guaran-
teed for future years.
“A ny time we can put
more money into class-
rooms is a good thing,” she
said.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Taking action to
stop bad drivers
Durham Regional Police could not watch any longer as
our roads worsened with each passing day. They heard
complaints, they saw the drivers and they had the full
ticket books to prove that drivers in Durham are driving too
aggressively.
The numbers are staggering — 30 dead and 2,500 hurt in
2004 alone on Durham Region roads.
The police have an answer to the problems on our roads
with a year-long campaign cracking down on aggressive driv-
ing called Staying Alive in 2005. The two-pronged attack will
see police concentrate on education and enforcement. In the
winter months there will be monthly snowmobile checks and,
once the summer hits, Durham and OPP officers will combine
to police cottage country traffic.
If the first day is any indicator, it’s going to be a long year for
drivers.
Monday, the police service set up shop outside J. Clarke Rich-
ardson Collegiate and Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School
in Ajax and ticketed a driver for doing 112 km/h in a school
safety zone. By zipping along at 62 km/h over the limit, the man
earned himself an automatic court date.
He wasn’t the only one pulled over Monday as police laid
300 charges and issued 140 warnings on the first day of the
program.
This first phase of the program is called In The Zone and will
focus on School Community Safety Zones across Durham Re-
gion. Residents of Durham can help out as well by making use
of the Road Watch program to let police know about bad drivers
and troublesome intersections and roadways in Durham.
We suggest that people take care behind the wheel, make
adjustments for bad weather, ensure everybody’s buckled up,
practise defensive driving, follow the rules of the road, and,
lastly, watch out for other motorists.
Liberals new laws are foolish
To the editor:
With this provincial government, surely the day is coming
when the following scenario could happen regularly across
Ontario.
“G ood evening sir and madam — table for two?” “We just
bought a new table, we’ll use that — just two chairs please.”
“Certainly, just find your own spot.”
“Thank you. Over by the window OK with you dear?” “Yes,
that’s lovely sweetheart.”
“Now, would you two like to see the menu and wine list?”
“A ctually we made 6,000 bottles of Chianti and we have some
bottles with us, so a corkscrew and two glasses please.”
“Certainly sir coming right up.” “And what would sir and
madam like to eat tonight?”
The guests place a stove in the middle of the table and say,
“actually we are preparing our own steaks and fish.”
“Oh, certainly sir, be our guest — need any salt, pepper etc.?”
The two intrepid diners prepare their steak just as they like it
with a few fries and then produce salmon from a bag. They pro-
ceed to burn woodchips and place the fish on them, bringing
the waiter back. “Excuse me sir, but what are you doing?”
“Smoking this salmon,” says the surprised guest.
“Can’t you read the ‘no smoking’ signs?” exclaims the waiter.
The two leap to their feet, fold up their table, grab their wine,
steak and fish and storm towards the door. “Don’t expect to see
us here again, too many bloody rules and regulations in this
establishment. Good night and don’t expect a tip.”
Silly. I agree, but then so are the Liberals.

There are eight issues
to keep an eye on
in the year ahead
I n no particular order, here’s a list
of some of the big Durham news
stories expected for 2005:
1. Region-wide transit. Will we fi-
nally have a system that means you
don’t have to switch buses eight times
to get from Clarington to Pickering?
We’ll know by mid-January.
2. Seaton. Details on the design,
number of people and when it goes
ahead are supposed to be released this
year. Then (more) battles between the
Province, Pickering and the Region will
really get interesting.
3. The greenbelt. The Province will
decide early in 2005 whether it will go
through with protecting 1 million acres
of greenspace in southern Ontario, in-
cluding a big chunk in Durham. The
decision will affect planners, farmers,
developers and everyone who pays
taxes.
4. New regional headquarters. The
six-storey, 338,000 sq. ft., $84-million
building and $14.5-million parking
garage at Rossland Road and Garden
Street in north Whitby are scheduled to
open in late spring.
5. Ronald James Woodcock retrial.
Originally convicted in the brutal and
notorious 1994 robbery of Gagnon
Sports in Oshawa that resulted in the
murder of two men, Mr. Woodcock
won a new trial in 2003 that will be
heard this year.
6. Tough smoking legislation. More
details on the Province’s smoking ban
will come in 2005. We’ll see how it fits
with the Region’s exemption of casinos
(particularly Great Blue Heron in Scu-
gog), homes for the aged and others
who can have smoking rooms.
7. New regional official plan. This
will not only set about population and
building for the region, but regional
council will also decide whether to
extend municipal urban boundaries to
allow for more development.
8. Hospitals. Both Rouge Valley and
Lakeridge are feeling the wrath of the
Province’s push to balance budgets.
More cuts and possible bed closures
are expected in 2005.
It’s not that we can ever predict the
news, but you can’t fault journalists for
wishful thinking.

Foods can provide
either a healing or
detrimental outcome. By
taking a food sensitivity
test you can learn which
foods you are sensitive to
and remove them from
your diet.
A follow-up to a food
sensitivity test is a
nutrition-packed seven-
day food plan that
eliminates an individual’s
sensitivities and provides numerous alternative food
choices. Recipes and tips for food preparation, as
well as nutritional advice are also offered.
Also necessary is a detoxification and cleansing
program to re-establish digestive integrity and
metabolic energy. At this stage the body is prepared
for the detoxification and weight loss begins
naturally.
A nutritional consultation fur ther addresses
symptoms of the individual. Deficiencies and/or
toxins of the body are revealed and root causes are
targeted to balance the body. Natural supplements
may be needed to assist the body back to health.
A holistic weight loss plan is implemented to
specifically target weight loss effectively for life. The
role and portions of carbohydrates, proteins and
fats are recommended in a simplified format.
This is done with consideration to the client’s
lifestyle.
Don’t take your health for granted. The
body “energetically” operates daily on millions
of complex internal procedures - it needs
ongoing support. Don’t wait until it is in
trouble!

Is your New Year’s resolution
the same this year as it was last
year? Are you tired of making
the same commitment to yourself
every year, and then not achieving
the results you desire? Do you
know what to do but for some
reason you just can’t seem to
follow through? If this sounds
familiar, then maybe 2005 is your
year to do something different?
When it comes to weight loss,
if you already know you should exercise more and eat
less, but you have not followed your weight loss plan,
then now is the time for you to experience all the
benefits of hypnosis. Hypnosis is not about learning
the latest fad diet, or learning a new exercise
Teeth whitening
is a popular
procedure. Almost
everybody wants
whiter teeth these
days.Before you
head off to the
stores to purchase a
whitening kit, or to
get it done by your
dentist, there are a
few points you
should know before starting.
1.Teeth whitening kits only work on your
own natural teeth. It will not whiten dental
restorations such as fillings or caps. If you
have dental restorations in the front part of
your mouth, you may want to have
them replaced after whitening,
especially if they are big and visible.
One exception is if you have a cap
in the front that was placed many
years ago and it is looking too white
compared to your teeth (because
porcelain caps don’t discolour with
age), then you can still whiten your
teeth and you stop when the
whiteness of your teeth matches
that of the cap. Talk to your dentist
if you have any concerns regarding
older, visible restorations before you
start whitening.
2.Teeth whitening does not
produce a permanent result. If you
want to maintain the whiteness, you
will need to do “touch ups”
regularly, usually once a year.
“Touch ups” require less time and
cost compared to the original kit,
especially if you’re getting it done
by your dentist Now if you wait
many years before doing a “touch
up”, you may require more touch up
material so the cost will be slightly
higher. The key is to do it regularly
so you’re not waiting for the full
discolouration to come back before
doing it again. Depending on your
diet and brushing habits, the
whitening effect will usually last an
average of three to four years before
the original discolouration reappears. The “do
it yourself” kit you buy from the stores will
last you a much shorter duration.
3.The more time you spend on whitening
your teeth, the whiter they will get. So you’re
actually in control of the final whiteness of
your teeth. Be realistic though, your teeth will
never be as white as snow using this product
alone and it wouldn’t look natural. Another
point to remember, the whiter you want your
teeth, the more maintenance (touch up) you’ll
need.

the tsunami in South Asia.
The Muslim community,
through the Pickering Islamic
Centre, has organized a fundrais-

quet Facilities in Ajax.
Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan,
Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP

In addition to that, there will be
a couple of guest speakers.
Tickets are $20 for adults and

PICKERING — A Pickering com-
pany got in the spirit of the season
by being a vital link for the Rouge
Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.
The Lenbrook Group held sev-
eral fundraising events recently in
support of the Rouge Valley Health
System Foundation’s Vital Links
campaign.
Employees raised money
through a bake sale, a hearty chili-
soup day, a red-green day and
a Christmas raffle. In addition,
some senior executives — who
also happen to be co-owners of
the Belleville Bulls Ontario Hockey
League team — joined in the spirit
and volunteered to have their hair
dyed in Bulls’ colours. The execu-
tives also matched the employees’
contributions, bringing the com-
pany’s total donation to more than
$11,295.
The money is being used for the
redevelopment of Rouge Valley’s
Ajax and Pickering site. The fund-
ing model from the Ministry of
Health and Long Term Care is 70-
30 so the donation means a total of
$37,651 for the redevelopment.
The $47-million project, set to
break ground in spring 2006, is to
include the construction of a new
emergency department, a new
diagnostic imaging and cardiac
diagnostic area, a new complex
continuing care unit, expanded
mental health services, all housed
in approximately 135,000 square
feet of new and renovated space.

DURHAM — Veridian Corpora-
tion is doing its part to help the
less-fortunate this winter.
High above a hydroelectric
power line, Pat O’Brien, chairman
of the Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge
United Way annual fundraising
campaign, was recently presented
with a $33,000 cheque from Verid-
ian lineman Greg Linn. The dona-
tion was made in part by the em-
ployees and directors of the Verid-
ian Corporation to help subsidize
underprivileged individuals.
“This is the corporation’s larg-
est contribution in our five-year
history and we are very proud of
our staff,” said Michael Angemeer,
president and chief executive offi-
cer of Veridian, in a press release.
Responsible for distributing
electricity to more than 90,000
customers in the Durham Region
area, Veridian makes an annual
contribution to the local United
Way to help support its disadvan-
taged consumers.
“The total amount (of money)
raised represented nearly a 10-per
cent increase from 2003 and over
70-per cent participation in the
payroll deduction program by Ve-
ridian employees,” said Ken Gal-
len, employee co-ordinator for Ve-
ridian, in the press release.

PICKERING — Prem Nadarajah
felt he had to do something to
help.
When the tsunami tragedy
struck Southern Asia, the Picker-
ing businessman was one of many
across Durham Region wanting to
lend a hand to the victims of the
Dec. 26 disaster.
Owner of Bob Caygeon’s Bar and
Grill, Mr. Nadarajah is organizing a
fundraising event Saturday, Jan.
15 that appeals to both adults and
children alike.
“I’m the kind of person that can-
not simply turn a blind eye to this
sort of tragedy,” said Mr. Nadara-
jah. “I’ve been in this industry for
nearly six years now. Being a part
of the community, you learn that
you have to rely on others as much
as they rely on you — even those
that may live far away.”
With fun-filled activities such as
magicians and clowns planned for
between 1 and 5 p.m., and live en-
tertainment and a buffet for adults
from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., organizers
welcome all ages to drop by. There
is no admission cost for either ses-
sion, but the buffet is $20, and
a cash bar will be available. Do-
nations will also be collected for
the Durham Community Tsunami
Relief effort. All events are being
held at the Pickering Recreation
Complex, 1867 Valley Farm Rd.
“I feel so terrible for the people
(of Southern Asia), I just want to
do whatever I can to help,” said Mr.
Nadarajah. “It makes me feel good
to know that I’m contributing to
others in need and anyone who
comes that night is sure to feel the
same way.”
The fundraiser is just one of the
many community events being
undertaken as part of the Dur-
ham Community Tsunami Relief
effort. Made up of politicians at
all levels of government, busi-
nesses, community groups, and
other individuals from all across
Durham Region, a working group
was established to bring the com-
munity together for what is hoped
to be the biggest relief effort in
Durham’s history.
The group invites all Durham
residents to take part in some
way leading up to a grand finale
planned for Saturday, Jan. 29 at
Deer Creek Banquet Hall in Ajax.
The day will feature free fam-
ily-oriented activities from 11 to
4 p.m., followed by a paid evening
reception from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Both sessions include multicultur-
al entertainment, food, beverages,
raffles and live and silent auc-
tions. In addition, the Metroland
Durham Region Media Group is
running an online auction at its
durhamregion.com site beginning
Jan. 20, with all items donated
from within the community. The
online auction will continue until
the evening reception on Jan. 29.
Every dollar raised through Dur-
ham Community Tsunami Relief
will be donated to the Red Cross-
Ts unami Relief Fund. The Picker-
ing Rotary Club is administering
the account and will issue tax re-
ceipts for donations of more than
$10 before turning the funds over
to the Red Cross.
Donations in the name of ‘Dur-
ham Community Tsunami Relief’
can be made at Bank of Montreal
branches. The account number is

Tr ojans cruise past Spartans
to ring in new hoops year
Pickering High
keeps perfect
league mark with
82-43 drubbing
of Dunbarton
By Shannon Boodram
Special to the News Advertiser
DURHAM — The Picker-
ing High School Trojans put a
damper on the Dunbarton High
School Spartans new year with a
resounding win in the teams’ first
league game after the Christmas
break.
Lake Ontario Secondary School
Athletics (LOSSA) senior boys’
basketball returned to the court
for 2005 on Thursday at Dunbar-
ton High School as the Spartans
hosted a focused Pickering High
team in front of a large, rowdy
crowd.
The game was an impressive
showcase of skill from both sides
but when the final buzzer rang it
was the Trojans who earned the
right to celebrate following their
82-43 win.
Pickering High assistant coach
Kirk Salesman noted that he was
impressed with his team’s play in
its first league game back on the
court for the new year.
“We’re a lot better this game
compared to the other games we
had,” said Salesman, “Our guys
are usually impatient, but today
they played with good poise.”
Dunbarton began the contest
with an aggressive offence led
by Shane Tingling and was able
to limit the Trojans to a six-point
advantage at the end of the first
quarter.
In the second stanza, Picker-
ing’s tough defence and Sephton
Spence’s strong performance in
the key made it too difficult for
Spartans to close the gap and the
half ended with Pickering leading
the way by an impressive 41-23
count.
In the second half, the Trojans
dominated the boards as they
steadily increased their lead.
Lyndon Rainford led the Trojans
scoring with 13 points despite
just coming off the injured list for
a broken wrist.
“My game was good I guess,
but I’m still a little rusty from
my injury. I think we all played
good, but I’m hoping to score
more points in later games,” said
Rainford.
The game ended with little sus-
pense and a quiet lull from host
Dunbarton and their fans. For
head coach Jeff Maharaj the final
score was upsetting, but came as
no surprise.
“We had a poor week of prac-
tice and it carried over to today’s
game. We have a better team than
what we came out with today.
Pickering’s a good team, they’re
well coached, but anything could
happen in the playoffs.”
Although the Trojans have
added another win to their
squeaky clean (4-0) Lake On-
tario Secondary School Athletics
(LOSSA) record, the coaches are
not about to start celebrating.
“We can’t get cocky yet. We
have a lot to work on before con-
centrating on the playoffs,” said
Salesman, “We got to be a bet-
ter defensive team. Offence wins
games, defence wins champion-
ships.”
The Trojans will host the Pine
Ridge Secondary School Pumas
next Tuesday and, two days later
on Jan. 13, will host the St. Mary
Catholic Secondary School Mon-
archs in their second and final
regular-season meeting.
In their first meeting of the sea-
son on Dec. 2, the Trojans recov-
ered from a shaky third quarter to
slip past the Monarchs 59-53.
Both the Trojans and the Mon-
archs are generally regarded
as the class of the LOSSA loop
this year and are likely destined
to meet in the Durham Region
final.

It’s an all-out battle as Pickering High School Trojans’ Lyndon Rainford and
Sephton Spence attempt to grab a loose ball against Dunbarton High School
Spartans’ Rayon Segree, whose jersey’s being pulled up by an unidentified
Tr ojans’ player, and Nick Brown. The Trojans won 82-43.
Downs Ollie Golf to
keep win streak intact
AJAX — The Christmas break
didn’t seem to slow down Top Shelf
in Ajax Men’s Basketball League
action on Wednesday night.
After a two-week hiatus from
the hardwood, Top Shelf settled
in quickly, continuing its winning
streak with a 49-39 victory over
Ollie Golf in the first game of the
evening.
Top Shelf was again led by the
Walker brothers, with Ivor Walker
scoring an impressive 25 points
and Kevin Walker adding nine.
Ollie Golf saw good production
from Mike Jovanov with 12 and
Allan Gomes with 10 points.
The outcome of the second
game of the evening was never in
question as Michael’s Eatery dom-
inated North Alliance Press 48-31.
Mike Stoddart and Greg Rowe had
the hot hands for Michael’s Eatery
with 19 and 14 points, respective-
ly. North Alliance Press was led by
Craig Yakimishyn with 12 points
and David Jackson with 10.
ESN Packaging defeated Dick-
son Printing 48-38 in the third
game of the evening. Clayton Gall
put on a clinic for ESN, scoring 16
points. John Esposito was solid in
the big man slot for ESN, adding
10. Claude Feig led all scorers for
Dickson Printing with 10, while
Don Leahy added eight.

Big month
for Attack
volleyball
teams
DURHAM — December was
a month to remember for the
Durham Attack Girls’ Volleyball
Club.
The 18U team travelled to
Trenton to compete in the 20U
McGregor Cup and came away
with the silver medal. Next the
18U Black and Red teams com-
peted against tough eastern com-
petition in Kingston, with the
Black team placing first in its pool
and going straight into the fi-
nals against the National Capitals
from Ottawa. It was a very intense
match with Durham Attack win-
ning gold in two straight games,
25-18, 25-20.
The 17U team won gold in the
Provincial Cup tournament and
a silver medal in the McGregor
Cup. The finish allows them to be
placed in the Ontario Tier 1 Divi-
sion this year.
The 16U team played in the
McGregor Cup tournament in
Newmarket, placing first in its
pool. After winning their first two
playoff matches, Durham Attack
settled for a silver medal, losing
to Aurora 25-20, 21-25, 13-15.
The 15U Black and Red teams
placed third and seventh respec-
tively at their tournament in Bow-
manville.
Durham Attack has four 14U
teams, including the Red Hawks
who played a near-perfect Mc-
Gregor Cup tournament in
Madoc, losing only a single game
the entire day. They played a final
tight match against the National
Capitals winning gold 25-18, 20-
25, 15-12. The Silver team came
in fifth in the same tournament.
The Black and White 14U teams
played in Toronto, coming in first
and 11th place respectively.
The Durham Attack Girls Vol-
leyball Club has accumulated six
gold, three silver and two bronze
medals this season.
Last season, the 16U Black
team won the Provincial Champi-
onship, the 15U Black team won
the bronze medal at the Eastern
National Championship and the
14U Black team won the Provin-
cial and the Eastern National
Championship.

ing dinner and dance on Feb.

In Memory of my Twin Sister
Tracy Lynn Gorman
(nee Black)
January 10, 1972 -
December 7, 2002
I lay awake night after night
When the world is fast asleep,
I take a walk down memory lane
Wiping tears from my cheeks.
The thirty years I shared with you
Are worth their weight in gold,
The sisterhood that you gave me
is mine forever to have and to hold.
Three birthdays have now gone by
That I have to celebrate without you
It's weird to have the day to myself
And I never know what quite to do.
Remembering you is easy, Trace,
I do it everyday,
But missing you is heartache
That never goes away.
I hold you close within my heart
As a part of me you will always
remain,
To walk with me throughout my life
Until we meet again.
Lots of love,
S

Pickering Panthers look to be active
as junior ‘A’ trade deadline looms
GM Robinson hopes
to add three players
to team’s roster
By Al Rivett
Sports Editor
PICKERING — With the regu-
lar season winding down and the
trade deadline in the offing, the
Pickering Panthers are looking to
become the Monty Hall of the ju-
nior ‘A’ hockey set. In other words:
‘Let’s Make a Deal’.
The OHA Junior ‘A’ club is look-
ing to bolster its roster for the
stretch run through the remain-
der of the season and on into the
playoffs. And, Panthers’ general
manager Frank Robinson admits
he has a few irons in the fire in
regards to potential deals.
Robinson says he’s currently
working the phones in an effort
to add at least three new players
to the lineup prior to the league-
wide trade deadline on Monday,
Jan. 10. At that point, each team
has to submit its 21-player roster
to the league for the remainder of
the season.
“We’ve got four (player) cards
left and we would like to fill three
of them,” says Robinson, adding
that he’s looking to deal for some
experienced players, if possible.
Currently sitting in fifth place in
the South Conference standings,
the Panthers (20-12-2-2) are look-
ing to finish in fourth place, ahead
of the Markham Waxers who cur-
rently occupy that spot, in order to
secure home-ice advantage in the
opening playoff round.
“We don’t need a major recon-
struction, just some tinkering to
get us to that spot,” says Robinson.
“We’re very pleased with the team
chemistry and one of the things
you can do to upset that is to make
wholesale changes.”
The need to add some key piec-
es, especially at the forward ranks,
became acute following the ship-
ping of high-scoring forward Jere-
my Whelan to the Aurora Tigers of
the league’s North Conference for
future considerations. The move
was made on Dec. 30 at the behest
of Whelan’s family.
“It was the family’s request to
move him and we obliged,” says
Robinson. “It wasn’t our decision,
but we tried to accommodate the
family.”
Whelan was on loan to the Pan-
thers from the Ontario Hockey
League’s Mississauga Ice Dogs
after being sent down by Missis-
sauga earlier this season. Since
joining the Panthers, Whelan had
been on a tear, scoring 11 goals in
10 games played.
The Panthers have also missed
the services of veteran forward
Richard Schofield, who has been
lost to the team since early Sep-
tember due to post-concussion
syndrome. Although Robinson
notes Schofield has made great
strides toward joining the club, the
Panthers have to proceed on the
premise that he’ll be lost for the
remainder of the season.
In addition to adding to the
Panthers’ depth up front, Robin-
son says he’s also looking to add
at least one more defenceman to
guard against injuries that could
jeopardize the team’s depth at that
position.
The Panthers are in Vaughan to
play the Vipers on Monday night
for their second meeting of the
season.
