Ms. Theofilopoulos dedicates much of her life to working with individuals with special needs. From dawn till after dusk Ana-Maria Theofilopoulos driven by her love for helping those with special needs By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING –Ana-Maria The- ofilopoulos may be inspired by the people she works with, but the Pickering resident is pret- ty inspiring herself. The 29-year-old is a thera- pist, a dance instructor, a vol- unteer, a student and a clown. For the past three years Ms. Theofilopoulos has made a living doing what she loves: working with special-needs children and young adults. She does therapy with hear- ing-impaired and autistic chil- dren, as well as social work with young adults. Despite initially having no training in the field, Ms. The- ofilopoulos knew she wanted to help people with special needs. She started volunteer- ing when she was 18. “Three years ago is when I knew I could do it as work. That’s the best thing that could happen to me, some- thing I love became work,” she says. “You try to find a place for yourself in the world and about three years ago I found it.” Not content to work regular hours, Ms. Theofilopoulos also teaches competitive and special-needs dance classes, volunteers at The Youth Cen- tre, the YMCA, the Emily Stowe Shelter (sometimes as a clown to entertain children), the Autism Society, and takes ✦See Theofilopoulos page A2 Brock Road breakthrough Focusing on being the best Durham’s strategic plan aims to pull away from the pack By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM – Durham College’s new strategic plan represents stepping out of the fast lane in a sense. It also has Ajax and Picker- ing in its sights. Unveiled recently, the three- year plan sets out 45 separate goals in four main areas, namely: quality programs and services for students; staff wellness, recruitment and de- velopment; efficient manage- ment of enrolment, facilities and operations; and a distinc- tive college sharing a joint campus. Bev Balenko, the college’s chief operating officer, says the plan is the result of exten- sive consultation with staff, refined last fall at a two-day meeting of stakeholders. “We’ve been in a very fast growth mode for the past few years,” she says. “People said, ‘let’s make sure everything we do we’re really doing well’.” As a result, the quality theme is prevalent in the plan. College administration wants to put in place a pro- gram development process and review model, create and publish service standards, and perform even better on the Province’s ‘key perfor- mance indicators,’ which rank colleges in areas such as stu- dent and employer satisfac- tion. The college wants to be OPG is deep in the red Pickering nuclear problems play role in troubles By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer DURHAM – Despite running up a net loss of almost $500 million last year, Ontario Power Generation says most of that deficit can be attrib- uted to the impending clo- sure of its coal-fired plants. However, problems with the restart of nuclear reac- tors in Pickering and un- planned outages in Darling- ton also played a role. OPG released its financial statements for 2003 yester- day and the company is showing a net loss of $491 million. In addition, an analy- sis by KPMG of the financial situation doesn’t paint a pretty picture for the compa- ny. “The trend line is clear. OPG’s operating margins are eroding and show little sign of reversing in the near term under its current operating model,” the analysis report states. Most of the loss, according to company spokesman John Earl, has to do with the im- pending closure of the coal- fired plants. However, the fi- nancial performance of the nuclear stations isn’t rosy. Long-awaited roadwork in Pickering may start sooner rather than later By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING - Rick Johnson re- ceived some news last week he had been waiting years to hear. The Pickering Ward 3 re- gional councillor heard from the Durham works committee that the project to widen Brock Road is finally going ahead. “I was able to negotiate at a special works committee to use the same money allocated in 2008 and move it up to 2005- 2006,” he said. “So now you’ll see the completion by 2008... I feel very elated that this has come to light.” The City recently submitted a list of its top priorities for improvements to regional roads in Pickering, with the Brock Road project at the top. But when the Region came back with its list of 2004 pro- jects none of Pickering’s top 10 were on it. Pickering’s councillors were upset and told the Region the list needed to be re-examined. ✦See Durham page A5✦See Pickering page A2 ✦See Outages page A4 Coun. Johnson has been pushing for the improvements to Brock for a decade. They in- volve the widening of Brock Road from Dellbrook Avenue to Fifth Concession Road, in- cluding a railway bypass south of Taunton Road. The need for the project be- came more urgent once Hwy. 407 was extended to Brock Road, increasing the flow of traffic on the two-lane road. Mo re than $22-million has been allocated for the project. It still has to go to finance committee and council for ap- proval, but Coun. Johnson is hopeful. “It’s gotten the first stage of approval and council has seen the light,” he said. “It’s a win- win for Pickering, but it’s also a win-win for the Region.” Wa rd 2 Regional Councillor Mark Holland had also been concerned about the lack of at- tention Pickering’s regional roads have received over the years. “I’m cautiously optimistic that we are getting through, that there has been some movement on some of the pro- jects - projects that have been on hold for a long time,” he said. In addition to the widen- ing of Brock Road, Coun. Hol- land said movement has been made on the improvements to Kingston Road from Walnut Lane to Glenanna Road. classes online to upgrade her skills. She admits the schedule is very tiring. (Her average day starts at 7:30 a.m. and she doesn’t get home until 10:30 p.m.) “I’m exhausted in a wonder- ful way. I go home and look at my day and know I made a dif- ference in someone’s life,” she says. Recently she was working with a little girl who doesn’t speak. The group was singing ‘If you’re happy and you know it.’ “At the end she shouted out ‘hoorah’ and we all just stopped and stared,” Ms. The- ofilopoulos said. But it wasn’t a unique expe- rience for Ms. Theofilopoulos, who is inspired by the children everyday. Another day she was teach- ing a little boy who had just started learning sign language. His reaction when he started to understand it is what drives her. “I saw this huge relief come over him and all the hard work he had done... he now under- stands communication,” she says. “It’s the emotional and so- cial achievements that really, at the end of the day, I lie in my bed and I think ‘I did it, my day can be over now’.” Still, the energetic Ms. The- ofilopoulos keeps adding new challenges to her life. About a year ago she decid- ed to teach dance sessions for special-needs students in addi- tion to the competitive classes she leads. She started dancing when she was three but it stopped being fun when she was in her late teens. Sharing with others has made it fun again. Her next idea is to open a recreation centre in Ajax or Pickering that she wants to call Inspiration House. It would offer classes, a wellness centre, a place for parents to meet, resources, counsellors, a playground, and whatever else she thinks there is a need for. Her goal is to have it open by the end of the year. With everything going on in her life, Ms. Theofilopoulos doesn’t have much free time. She spends as much time with her family and friends as she can, although she admits she usually chooses time with one of the young adults over hang- ing out with friends, including this past New Year’s Eve when she went to Cullen Gardens to see the fireworks. “But this is what makes me happy,” she explains. Michelle Badali is one of two high school co-op students who recently began working with Ms. Theofilopoulos. Michelle sees first-hand how difficult Ms. Theofilopoulos’ job is and she’s learning a lot. “She’s really dedicated. You can tell she puts forth a good effort,” says Michelle. The idea to get high school students involved came to Ms. Theofilopoulos’ suddenly one night. “One day I was sleeping and thought ‘why don’t I go to the schools and get co-op stu- dents’. I woke up in the middle of the night and went to the computer, looked up schools and left messages,” she says. She is happy to open the eyes of teenagers. “I don’t think a lot of people know this is a type of work you can go into and enjoy it,” she says. On a recent afternoon, at a local fast food restaurant for the interview, the happiness Ms. Theofilopoulos gets from her activities is evident. She crawls through the in- door playground with the little boy she has that afternoon, de- spite the fact she is feeling nau- seous. She makes faces to ex- aggerate how difficult it is for her to fit through the equip- ment and he laughs. “I’m happy right now,” she says. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.” We want to highlight the people who make our commu- nities go. Mr. Shaw died suddenly of heart complications on the night of the awards ceremony. In recognition of his contribution to community jour- nalism, this being the second time in three years he had been named Re- porter of the Year, the OCNA have renamed the award in Mr. Shaw’s ho- nour. CN, striking workers reach agreement DURHAM – A month-long rail strike may be nearing the end of its run this week. The Canadian Auto Workers’ Union (CAW) and Canadian Nation- al (CN) Railway announced Monday they have reached a tentative agree- ment expected to be taken to a rati- fication vote later this week. If rati- fied, the settlement will end a strike of 5,000 CN Rail workers, which began Feb. 20. The tentative agreement calls for scrapping CN’s recently instituted discipline system to return to the railway’s disciplinary standards in place before Jan. 1, 2001. Also included in the proposed agreement is a $1,000 return-to-work bonus for all strikers, wage increases of three per cent in each year of a three-year agreement, and pension plan improvements. Mr. Rosner said he expects the ratification vote to be called before Friday but has no idea what the out- come will be. Region reports office still dealing with full caseload DURHAM – If the job action by Durham police officers is having any effect, it hasn’t yet made its way to the court system. “We have 12 courts and they’re all fully booked. As far as we’re con- cerned, it’s business as usual,” says Inez Diamond-Gleeson, manager of the Provincial Offences Act court ser- vices for Durham Region. “We have so much happening here, we haven’t no- ticed.” In late February, the Durham Re- gional Police Association began the job action with one of its planks being to stop writing up tickets for traffic vi- olations, which fall under the POA. The association is upset about the management regime of Chief Kevin McAlpine, claiming it’s heavy-handed and harsh. Chief McAlpine has been on holidays in Florida since just prior to the action and is expected to re- turn next week. “At this time it’s premature to iden- tify any significant change,” says Ms. Diamond-Gleeson. “It’s not obvious at all.” She notes the POA deals with tick- ets for several agencies in addition to the Durham police, including the OPP, the Ministry of Transportation and municipal bylaw departments. The Region keeps 40 per cent of revenue from tickets and the munici- palities divvy up the rest, based on their assessment. Police association head Doug Ca- vanaugh says the job action is contin- uing. “The feedback I’m getting, I don’t have facts or figures, it seems to be moving along quite successfully,” Mr. Cavanaugh says. “Quite frankly, I don’t think service to the public will be affected. The public won’t see it.” The action will continue “until the chief returns. He has to be at the table,” Mr. Cavanaugh says. Last week, the association met with the police services board to discuss the action and what brought it on. The association received a reply from the board at the end of last week and is “in the process of replying to them,” Mr. Cavanaugh states. “They focus on the breakdown in communication and to a certain de- gree they’re correct. They suggest third-party intervention. I want to know what they mean by that.” Police board chairman Doug Mof- fatt couldn’t be reached for comment. “The underperformance of OPG’s nuclear assets had a cascading neg- ative financial impact on OPG’s overall operations,” the report states. Among those factors affecting the financial position were cost overruns and delays in the restart of the four Pickering ‘A’-side reactors, and un- planned outages on the Pickering ‘B’ side and at Darlington. Mr. Earl pointed to the company’s “impairment loss,” which refers to the closing of the coal-fired generat- ing stations, which the Liberal gov- ernment has promised will happen in 2007. “If you know something is coming, you have to show that in your books,” Mr. Earl says, adding the write-off totalled $473 million. “Otherwise, we had an $18-million loss. There were a number of things. We didn’t get as much generation from our fleet this year as last year.” He also pointed to the outage at Darlington, when all four reactors were off-line because of a contain- ment outage. “We had higher-than-planned out- ages, both planned and forced, at Pickering ‘B’. If there’s less genera- tion, there’s less revenue,” he adds. “There were higher costs because of more maintenance.” OPG is also dealing with a price cap of 3.8 cents per kilowatt-hour. Mr. Earl says about 75 per cent of generation is subject to the cap. Beyond that, “we have to rebate anything back to the market,” he adds. “Seventy-five per cent of what we generate is covered by the mar- ket power mitigation agreement. Three-quarters of our production is effectively capped. That creates rev- enue challenges.” The 2003 financial statements also pointed out the baseline budget be- tween 1999 and last year had been projecting earnings of $3.097 billion but only totalled $2.063 billion. The plan also seeks a balance be- tween distinguishing the college from the University of Ontario Institute of Te chnology (UOIT), and yet enhanc- ing partnerships between the two. “We want to pull away from the pack,” says Ms. Balenko. “We want to make sure that when people talk about Durham College they know they can get things they just can’t get at any other college.” She notes that by September the campus will be able to boast that its new library rivals any in the system, and athletic facilities like the new ten- nis centre are further enhancing stu- dent life. While it’s not something that would happen overnight, the plan also aims to research a business case with UOIT for a possible Ajax/Pickering campus. “We feel we don’t get as many stu- dents from the Pickering area as we would like,” says Ms. Balenko. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, March 17, 2004 PAGE A5 A/P TWIN TWIN TWIN BUNKBED BUNKBED BUNKBED $ 199 $ 199 $ 199 PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE HWY 401 DUNDAS STREET THICKSON ROAD*Pictures not exactly as illustrated. Editorials &Opinions WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial There is a large picture win- dow in my office that faces onto a maple tree. There is a cat crouching, transfixed, in the crotch of the tree. Two feet away, on a branch to the cat's left, sits a big fat blue jay. Two feet in the other direction, a moronic squir- rel is blissfully munching on a nut. The cat is paralyzed by his sudden good fortune. The look on his face is hysterical. His head remains perfectly still, but his eyes are frantically darting back and forth like one of those Felix the Cat clocks from the fifties. With a practised flash of his claws, he could easily dispatch one of these victims, and yet he does nothing. He is stock-still, the addict-like twitching of his tail the only indication of the tur- moil raging inside him. I wonder why he doesn't pounce? Then it occurs to me he must be waiting for a witness, one of his cat pals to stroll along and see this remarkable situation for himself. That must be it. After all, the guys down at the cat le- gion or the cat local or wherever it is that cats gather would never believe such a story without cor- roboration. "I'm telling ya, I had a jay and a squirrel not two feet away from me at the same time!" "Sure you did, Spike. And Louie over there ain't neutered." "Yeah, like I ain't neutered!" "Shaddap, Louie!" "Sorry, Nick." Cats can be very hard on each other. They are naturally dis- trustful. Such a boast would be almost impossible to verify. "If only I had a camera‚" he must be thinking. But that would require opposable thumbs, he realizes, staring at his useless claws. Suddenly, my dog runs to the window and sits, staring at the scene. Now I have a fourth ani- mal in an even greater conun- drum. A mere eighth of an inch of glass separates him from dog nir- vana; a paralyzed cat, a fat bird and a stupid squirrel. He is vi- brating like a cello string. The cat sees the dog now, but he is not worried. Cats know all about glass. If anything, the cat's ex- pression has changed to one of smug mockery. Once again he glances with disdain at his dys- functional paws. He'd give a bowl full of mice for a middle finger to show that dog right now. Dogs, of course, lack any trace of guile or subtlety and my idiot pooch's childlike enthusiasm is soon too much for him. He raises an agitated paw and scratches at the window. Immediately, the dumb squirrel and the chubby jay do a synchronized double- take that is vaudevillian in its timing. "A gghh! Dog! Whoa! Cat!" And they are gone. The cat's expression, however, is nothing short of comic genius. He does a slow burn to my dog that would put Jack Benny to shame. My dog doesn't get it. He wags his tail in excitement. He thinks he has been instrumental in help- ing the cat somehow. Dogs don't understand the thrill of the kill. To them, the chase is everything. To make matters worse, instant- ly upon the hasty departure of the bird and the squirrel, two other cats round the corner into the front yard. They look at the cat in the tree with a "What's up?" He turns one last time to sneer at my dog then hops down beside his feline cronies. "Nothing" he meows and, tail in the air, he walks away. Sunderland resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Letters to the Editor It's the circle of life... Plenty of opportunities for teens To the editor: Re: 'Giving them something to do,' March 3. Why is it always assumed that every individual between the ages of 13 and 18 spends every spare moment of free time hang- ing around at the mall? I under- stand there are many teens who tend to loiter around the mall, but numerous others have found other constructive ways to spend their time. The new East Shore Commu- nity Centre is one example of an establishment that allows teens to socialize and work together with other teens, and to develop friendships with new people. This program offers the youth of this community the opportunity to get involved in activities such as games, sports and dances. I think these programs would be most valuable to kids just en- tering their teens. I believe that if they see that having fun doesn't require getting in trouble, it might assist them to make the right decision in the future. Emily Boodram Pickering Development plan would cut greenspace To the editor: Re: 'Plan sees jobs, homes,' Feb. 25. The story noted "Central Pickering's open space and farmland could one day make way for 25,000 residences and 33,000 jobs." Does anybody realize what this means? The City is looking to approve a plan to build enough housing for 77,000 resi- dents. If this happens, we will be losing much of our precious and already quickly disappearing green space. Over the past five years, Pick- ering's open and greenspaces have been steadily decreasing. There are always new homes being built, new stores opening up and new 'Coming soon!' restaurant signs going up. At the rate this is going, in 20 years there won't be anything left to build on. The entire city will be buried in concrete. People have to put forth an ef- fort to conserve our greenspace. When people ask me where I'm from I want to say, 'Pickering, that nice town with all the parks and rivers running through it.' But it seems like that won't be possible for me to say pretty soon, and the thought of that makes me turn green. Danielle Schon Pickering Children need positive role models To the editor: Re: 'Family unit must contain male and female parents,' letter to the editor, March 7. There are many things part of our human heritage that we ig- nore at our peril, but certainly not our ability to love and raise children. It is true that a homosexual marriage does not provide the equal balance of male and female influences that a heterosexual marriage does, however, we are forgetting the simple fact that many children grow up with only one parent present, be that the mother or the father. Certainly there has not been the same negative reaction to single-parent families that the gay community has had to en- dure. Are we ignoring the fact that everyone has the right to love and procreate? Are these things not inherent to human na- ture and important to the healthy continuation of our lives? A child raised in a same-sex marriage would have two loving parents, as opposed to the one for children of divorce or separa- tion. And as parents, homosexu- al or otherwise, we cannot forget that our children have many in- f luences in their lives. Siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, teachers, coach- es, Big Brothers and Sisters, Scout and Guide leaders - all of these people can enrich our chil- dren and provide positive role models, be they male or female. The heterosexual family unit is not considered the norm any longer. Welcome to 2004. St ephen Harper's the right person for the job Former Alliance leader is best choice from among the three candidates What's most notable about the race to be leader of the new Conservative Party of Canada is who is not running. While Stephen Harper, Tony Clement and Belinda Stronach are furiously fighting for Conservative delegates across the country, we can only wish Bernard Lord or Mike Harris were in this race. Mr. Lord and Mr. Harris offer intriguing possibilities. Mr. Lord is New Brunswick's premier, is fluently bilingual, has shown he is a winner and is young and energetic. Mr. Harris has twice won the race for premier of Canada's most populated province and would be assured of tremen- dous support in a federal election. Alas, both men said no and we're left with a lesser race. A careful examination of all three candidates shows Stephen Harper is the clear choice: While Belinda Stronach brings a lot of energy and ex- citement to the race, she is sadly lacking in experience. Ms. Stronach, before her January announcement to run, had never been involved in politics at any level. It's a tough game where experience counts for much, and it isn't clear Ms. Stronach knows much about national or internation- al issues. Tony Clement can't even get himself elected in his own riding, as his loss in the last provincial election showed. Moreover, Mr. Clement was an also-ran in the 2002 provin- cial leadership race, which Ernie Eves won. Mr. Clement is anonymous on a national scale and has almost no charis- ma. A vote for him is wasted. While Stephen Harper does not exactly inspire "Trudeaumania" he has advantages his competitors lack. He has been elected twice to Parliament and won a tough leadership race to take over the Canadian Alliance after Stockwell Day stumbled. He is fluently bilingual and well versed in national and international issues. Mr. Harper has fought the tough fights and was instrumental in final- ly uniting the right, something his predecessors could not or would not do. Mr. Harper, of the three candidates, is the only one who can seriously challenge Prime Minister Paul Martin in a federal election campaign, who can call the Liberal leader to account in the House of Commons and on the electoral hustings. Mr. Harper has the track record to make him a potential prime minister, which is something his competi- tors cannot say. He is the best choice to be the inaugural leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. To avoid any associated health risks, the Durham Region health de- partment is openly inviting the pub- lic to visit its Beauty and Body Art display to learn how to shop for these services safely. The exhibit, including photos and information, is at the Pickering Town Centre today (Wednes- day) and tomor- row and at the Os- hawa Centre March 19 to 21 dur- ing mall hours. “Make sure the artist you chose has made infec- tion-control a pri- ority,” said Ross M acEachern, manager of envi- ronment health, Durham Region health department. “Ask if they used disposable nee- dles, because things like hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV can be passed through improperly sterilized or reused contaminated needles. Ask even how they sterilize their equip- ment,” he added. Mr. MacEachern said the display provides a lot of similar information for the public to determine what is a safe environment prior to receiving a tattoo or piercing. “They should have a clean, orga- nized work area. The worker should be washing his or her hands and using clean, single-use gloves. They should dispose of needles after use in a (plastic) container and give verbal and written information for after- care once the procedure is done.” “We recommend that you walk away if they don’t do those things,” he said. Mr. MacEachern said the Durham Health Department is mandated by Ontario’s Ministry of Health to, at least once a year, inspect businesses providing beauty and body art ser- vices. Inspections also occur if they receive a complaint. “That’s another reason for doing the display, because when you get a well-informed public, if they do see something improper, they should be phoning the health department. We generally try to get out there within a 24-hour period...and take the appro- priate action if need be,” he said. Mr. MacEachern said if an “imme- diate” public health risk is identified, such as the use of unsterilized nee- dles or equipment, the health de- partment has the authority under the province’s Health Protection and Promotion Act to shut the business down. Individual operators can face fines up to $5,000 a day per charge if they do not comply with the health de- partment’s orders. Franchises and corporations can face fines of up to $25,000 per day on each separate charge. Unfortunately, Mr. MacEachern said service owners are not required to advertise or post if they pass a safety inspection. Moreover, they do not even need a licence or the de- partment’s approval before opening. “That’s probably one of the biggest challenges that health units in On- tario have to face. They can just ba- sically set up shop without a health department inspection,” he said. To g et inspection results, call Mr. MacEachern at 1-800-841-2729, ext. 2188. In just two recent days, Durham Region police have received reports of half a dozen licence plates that have gone missing, either lost or stolen. If it’s a case of theft, it’s not diffi- cult to figure out why a person with a bad driving record or a traffic-re- lated conviction would want to take somebody else’s plates. Plates are sometimes stolen so thieves can reg ister their own car under differ- ent numbers. And, according to authorities, thieves often take plates from cars similar to their own. Another reason may simply be that the thief doesn’t want to pay for licence plates. But Sgt. Paul Malik, spokesman for the Durham Region police, says this time of year is often when police receive more than the usual number of missing licence plates reports. “People are getting ready for spring,” he says. “Maybe they’ve parked in a snow bank and have just now noticed a plate missing. We do see a slight increase at this time of year when people are starting to clean the salt off their vehicle, or if it’s been parked for a while.” If your plates have been lost, stolen or damaged, the following documentation must be taken to a Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing office: • Replacement Declaration filled out by the owner and the police or telephone reporting occurrence number (only required if both plates, the plate with the validation sticker affixed or trailer plate is lost/stolen); • The remaining plate if you have it; • Name of your insurance compa- ny and policy number; • The vehicle permit (plate and vehicle portions); • Application for registration completed and signed by the vehicle owner. DURHAM -The Durham Regional Police Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program took 20 drivers off the road last weekend, March 13 to 14, with spot checks tak- ing place in Whitby, Oshawa, Picker- ing, North Durham and Clarington. Police stopped 2,500 vehicles and administered 65 roadside assess- ments by using a mobile-breath-test unit at each spot-check location. Eight drivers were charged with ex- ceeding the legal limit of .08, while 12 drivers received 12-hour suspensions for driving when their test registered “warn.” One man was charged with posses- sion of marijuana. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, March 17, 2004 PAGE A9 A/P 9 PIECE DININGROOM SUITE 9 PIECE DININGROOM SUITE 9 PIECE DININGROOM SUITE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE HWY 401 DUNDAS STREET THICKSON ROAD*Pictures not exactly as illustrated. Jim Ripley, a senior at KSU, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and struck out a career-high 10 batters in the 2-1 win March 7 over the Crimson Tide. Ripley, 1-0 on the season, retired 18 of the first 19 batters he faced in just his second start of the season, including 17 in a row. A hit batsman was the lone blemish until a single broke up the no-hit bid with two outs in the seventh. He fin- ished with seven innings pitched and gave up one run on one hit while walking just one batter. He retired 21 of the 24 batters in all. For his performance, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-hander was named the Louisville Slugger national player of the week, co-Big 10 Conference pitcher of the week, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Co-Pitch- er of the Week and CollegeBase- ballInsider.com's West Region Pitcher of the Week. Ripley was back on the mound Sun- day, March 14, helping the Wildcats to their 11th consecutive win, a 7-2 romp over Buffalo. Ripley worked five innings, struck out eight and gave up two un- earned runs. The Ajax Spartans Minor Baseball Association product and Pickering High School graduate joined KSU last season after two years at Connors State Col- lege in Oklahoma where he served pri- marily in long relief. Last season with the Wildcats, Ripley led the pitching staff in wins with four, strikeouts (59), games started (13) and innings pitched (67.1). The Wildcats currently have a 14-4 mark on the season. The Knights played the Peterbor- ough Nationals in the second round of the playoffs after a first-round bye. The Knights needed all five games to finally subdue the Nationals. Team members are Jonathan Ger- main, Ben Reid, Spencer Forrester, Michael Mastrangelo, Michael Lanteigne, Matthew Roberts, Shayne Hudson, Alex Hillhouse, Thomas Miles, Connor Tam- blyn, George Jimas, Brandon Watts, Adam Zulak, Cody Arsenault, James Malloy, Brendan Lane and David Murphy. Sports Briefs MARCH 17, 2004 JIM RIPLEY Hurler stems the Tide. A rebirth in the pool Laura Nicholls finds life in Pickering agrees with her Olympic goals By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — With the Canadian Olympic trials looming on the hori- zon, Laura Nicholls knows this sea- son represents a crossroads in her swimming career. "I think we have some work to do still, but I'm definitely excited with the results I've had so far," says the 25-year-old, who came to the Picker- ing Swim Club from the Region of Wa t erloo Swim Club last fall to work alongside head coach Lucie Hewitt- Henderson. A veteran of two Olympic Games, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000, the sprint freestyle specialist is hop- ing the 2004 Games in Athens will provide the backdrop for her best Olympic results ever in what she ex- pects will be her international swan- song. "I know I'm not going to be swim- ming for another four years. I have to do it now or I'm never going to do it. I don't want to live to regret it," she says. "In 1996 it was a learning experi- ence; in 2000 it was political; this time I just want to go there and have fun and perform well. I'm looking at com- peting in the 100-metre and 200- metre freestyle, I want to do best times and I would like to place better than I ever have before." Unlike her previous two Games, Nicholls feels she possesses more poise and maturity than ever before. She's more focused, more acutely aware of herself and her goals and has enjoyed the new swimming envi- rons that the Pickering club has af- forded her, especially training under Hewitt-Henderson. "It's different. She keeps me on my toes. I think (working with Hewitt- Henderson) has sparked something within me and something in Lucie as well. I think she has a taste of what it's all about. She's still learning and I'm still learning. With her, it works well," she says. Moving to Pickering from her na- tive Waterloo has been a tough ad- justment, leaving behind family and friends. But, it's a decision she says was necessary to keep her swimming career moving forward. In a nutshell, she was mired in a rut and needed to regain her competitive spark. She be- lieves she's found that missing ingre- dient with the help of Hewitt-Hen- derson. "I think it was a matter of I was staying in my comfort zone," she re- lates. "I knew what to do and what to say to work my way out of something. If I didn't want to do it, I didn't do it. I was too familiar with what was going on; it was too predictable." A test of her new-found poise oc- curred at the Eastern Canadian Championships in Halifax last month. There, the meet was held under the most adverse weather con- ditions imaginable, with the competi- tion delayed for two days due to a snowstorm that gripped the Mar- itimes. That meant some alterations were made to the meet schedule when it eventually got under way. In the past, those difficulties might have proved insurmountable. But, Nicholls' maturity allowed her to win gold in the 50m and the 100m free and break the previous Canadian record in the 50m free. She didn't, however, break the record in a 50m race. Rather, she beat the existing stan- dard while swimming the 200m free when she asked for an official split. Her time of 25.05 beat the previous record of 25.14 seconds. She finished the 200m in two minutes, six seconds. "Six to eight years ago, if someone had said 'stand up and swim' under those conditions, I couldn't have done it," she says. "It teaches you to take things as they come. National team coach Dave Johnson says, 'Al- ways expect the unexpected'. It's not always going to go the way it's sup- posed to." This season has been uniformly productive for Nicholls in high-profile meets across North America. At the ConocoPhillips Spring National Championships 2004 in Orlando, Florida in mid-February, Nicholls helped the Canadian relay team to a gold medal in the women's 4x100m freestyle, while finishing seventh in the 100m free 'A' final in a time of 56.50. In the 200m free, Nicholls fin- ished 56th in a time of 2:06.19. At the U.S. Open in Seattle in De- cember, Nicholls helped the Canadi- an relay teams to two gold medals and one silver. She also competed at the Canadi- an Short Course Swimming Champi- onships in Quebec City in December where she won six gold medals, in- cluding four in the relay races. In the next few months, Nicholls will use several high-profile meets to tune up for July's Canadian Olympic trials in Toronto. She expects to com- pete at the Victor Davis Meet in Guelph later this month. In early April, she'll be at a Grand Prix meet in Indianapolis, featuring many of the top Olympic hopefuls from the U.S. and Canada. In early May, she'll head to either Texas or Santa Clara, California for another Grand Prix event. NOTES: Nicholls splits her training time between the Pickering Recre- ation Complex, the Dunbarton pool and the University of Toronto pool. She has also trained this season at Laurier University in Waterloo, Guelph and Hamilton... She swam the 50m free in the Atlanta Olympics as a 17-year-old, finishing tied for 29th place with a time of 26.3 sec- onds... In Sydney, she swam the 100m and 200m free. She finished 13th in the 100m free and 23rd in the 200m free. Generals meet ’Dogs in playoffs DURHAM —The Mississauga Ice- Dogs will have to rewrite history if they are to prevail in their opening round playoff series against the Os- hawa Generals. But if ever they were in a position to do so, it is now. The IceDogs (36-21-7-2) enter the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal as favourites after fin- ishing 14 points ahead of the Gener- als (30-29-8-1) during a season that was by far their best in the six-year history of the franchise. To live up to the favourite tag, however, the IceDogs will have to do something four times they've man- aged to do only once in six years: beat the Generals. What's more, the IceDogs have managed just one playoff victory in their inauspicious history, a 5-4 overtime decision in Game 4 of their series with Ottawa a year ago. When the series gets under way Friday in Mississauga, all eyes will be on IceDogs’ sniper Patrick O'Sul- livan, who scored six goals in two games against the Generals and 43 all told this season. He had both goals in a 5-2 loss in Oshawa and four in an 8-3 win in Mississauga. Annandale team f inishes second with 3-2 record By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser AJAX —An Annandale bantam boys' rink finished as runners-up at the Ontario Winter Games in Lon- don last weekend. The Tim March rink competed in the six-team round-robin event against teams from across the province. Shane Latimer's four- some from Winchester won the event. The winners also captured the Ontario bantam final last month at Annandale. The March team ended up in a second-place tie with a 3-2 record, handing the Latimer rink its only loss at the event. ••• March will also skip a team at the 2004 Optimist International Under- 18 Curling Championships slated for Langley and Cloverdale, B.C. from April 1 to 4. Approximately 100 of the world's top young curlers from Japan, the U.S. and Canada will compete for gold, silver, bronze and the world seedings of fourth to 12th in the age group. Patrick Janssen, Tyler Anderson and Peter Tak, with Paul Bourque as coach, join March on the Cana- dian team. Twenty-four boys' and girls' teams will participate in the cham- pionships, which include a round- robin draw and a skills competi- tion. In addition, a development camp consisting of a series of work- shops will be presented. ••• The Barry Moylan team had the luck of the Irish in capturing top spot at the annual St. Pat's Mixed Bonspiel at Annandale last Satur- day. Moylan, along with wife Susan- nah at vice, second Jamie Pilgrim and lead Michelle Bucholz took top prize. The event featured a full draw of 32 teams. Second place went to Matt Cook and his Tam Heather Curling Club team of Shannon Moore, Glen Bratti and Tara Cook. Third and fourth, respectively, went to An- nandale's Craig Jewer and Rick Moak rinks. In addition to the curling, the teams enjoyed breakfast, lunch, dinner, Irish trivia, prizes, and dancing to 'The Entertainers'. ••• The annual skins competition is winding down. Barry Moylan re- cently won the 'A' flight over Paul Boyland. ••• Annandale's junior mixed team skipped by Paul Boyland started well, but couldn't sustain its mo- mentum at the regional playdowns in Oakville March 6 and 7. The Boy- land rink won its first game on last rock, but proceeded to lose its next two games by close margins to end with a 1-2 record. The Boyland foursome advanced to the regionals after winning the 'A' side of the draw at the recent zone playdowns at the Oshawa Golf Club. With Boyland were Kaitlyn Leslie, Chris Janssen, and Tracy O'Leary. Peter Boyland was along as coach. Stephanie Davis, who has been singing since age three, was one of about 90 remaining contestants singing for a panel of Canadian Idol celebrity judges in Toronto on March 16. About 7,000 hopefuls com- peted at SkyDome earlier this month, not including those audi- tioning outside the province. This is 18-year-old Stephanie's second try at the Idol competition, however she said she has been singing with some success long be- fore Idol came onto the scene. "I started by doing karaoke," she said, adding that she moved on to doing singing shows in malls, as well as being a member of the Young Singers of Ajax. Ms. Davis was to perform about four songs for the Idol judges Tues- day, which she selected from a pro- vided list of more than 700. Her choices included '80s hits 'Black Vel- vet' by Alannah Myles, and 'Walking On Sunshine,' by Katrina and the Wav es. She said the songs "fit her style." Although she has little formal training in the art of singing, Ms. Davis produced a powerful rendition of Whitney Houston's 'I Have Noth- ing' in her living room prior to being interviewed this week. She said swallowing Vaseline was one way she has learned to allow her to sing longer, along with voice warm-up ex- ercises. Dancing is another of her favourite things to do, she added. The 'pop' style of music allows her to combine singing and dance, more so than her earlier direction, which was more country and western-influ- enced. She made it clear that despite what level of success she achieves, it's more important to her to be true to herself than to fit an image creat- ed by someone. "I want to promote myself through my personality," she said. Her mother and manager, Nicky, has been by her side through all her ups and downs, and said it has been a difficult road. She agrees with her daughter's philosophy about keep- ing her feet on the ground. "When you lose who you are, it's time to get out," she said. Stephanie performed songs in a gruelling process over the course of a few days last week, impressing producers enough to get a chance in front of the Idol celebrity judges. The results from Tuesday's Idol competition at the SkyDome were not available at press time. Only bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music acoustic instruments are al- lowed. Everyone from beginners to advanced players is welcome. The society meets the third Sun- day of every month from 1 to 5 p.m., in Woodview Community Centre at 151 Cadillac Ave., N., Oshawa. It’s time for jammin' and pickin' Pickering and Ajax students getting a chance in auditions DURHAM –Local high school stu- dents are in the midst of auditioning for their dreams. At eight schools across the region, young singers have signed up for Dreams To Reality (D2R), a pilot project designed by producers Tony Tosti and Barry Hall, co-founders of Centre for Music and Sound Design in Oshawa. The program is their attempt to fill in some blanks in the music in- dustry scene east of Toronto, Tosti said. "Durham has a lot of talent. Un- fortunately there aren't a lot of out- lets," he said. "D2R was created to provide young performers with op- portunities to showcase their tal- ents in professional, competitive and fun environments." Through D2R, young musicians can audition and compete for the top prize of a produced, personal demo CD. "We're not going to make anyone a star through this," Tosti said. The competition will give them an idea of what's involved and whether they want to go any further in the music industry, he said. He approached high schools in Durham in the fall. O'Neill, Donevan and Eastdale Collegiate in Oshawa, Anderson Collegiate and Father Leo J. Austin Secondary School in Whit- by, St. Mary's Catholic Secondary and Pine Ridge Secondary in Pick- ering and Notre Dame Catholic Sec- ondary in Ajax agreed to take part. An open call was issued to all stu- dents and the first stage of audi- tions is taking place now. "By the time this phase is over, we'll see between 250 and 300 kids," Tosti said. "You'd be surprised at the interest." From the first auditions, five to 10 students are being picked from each school. Those contestants will go through another competition later this month, with three to five select- ed from each school. Then the final- ists will record a compilation CD in April, before taking to the stage in May or June for the finals. During the second stage, students will perform to two karaoke selec- tions of their choice on CD format. Students can either provide the se- lections or order them through D2R for $15, Tosti said. That's the only cost to students, he added. He hopes the program will ex- pand to more high schools in the area next year. He and Hall also hope to provide performance oppor- tunities for young singers in the community.
