In fact, one warned Wednesday pooling tax dol- lars in the Greater Toronto Area to pay for the likes of social services and social housing will he a "financial disaster" when the next reces- sion hits and the city's wel- fare rolls explode along with the need for more subsidized shelter. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish convinced his Regional coun- cil colleagues to express to the Province again that Durham continues to oppose pooling. "I think we should, at every opportunity, reiterate our position. It's fundamen- tally wrong. The next reces- sion will show it's a financial disaster." Councillor Parish con- tended Durham taxpayers are "Icing punished" by pooling. Region finance depart- ment staff reported about $4.1 million from Durham will be sent to Toronto this year to help pay for social housing and social assistance in the city. Last year, Durham benefited through pooling when it received $400,((x) more from other GTA regions than it turned over. Women of Distinction Awards postponed The annual Women of Distinction Awards, held by the Oshawa YWCA, has been rescheduled for next May. "We don't have a date yet but we're aiming for May and we'll put it back to a weeknight;" said Rosalie Evans, spokesman for the event. The annual dinner, which honours women across Durham Region, had been scheduled to take place Satur- day, Nov. 6 with guest speaker ac- tress Tonya Lce Williams, an Oshawa native. The event, normally held on a weeknight, had been moved to Satur- day to accommodate the actress. The change of day appeared un- popular, M,,. Evans said. The date also conflicted with another commu- nity event. Ms. Williams will be invited to at- tend the May event, Ms. Evans said. The nomination forms will be held for the spring awards ceremony. Nominees and those who nominated them will be informed of the change. Ticket holders can returned their tickets for refunds or keep them for the spring event. While Durham's share of GTA services funding is in- creasing this year, informa- tion from the Province indi- cates the total cost for 1999 poxoling has dropped to $770 million From the 1998 figure of 5815 million. Durham politicians are es- pecially peeved that the provincial information fails to indicate how the figures were reached. "We're not only paying the hill, we have no voice;" said Clarington Mayor Diane Harare. "All we do is get a bill with no accountability and no say on how it's spent" Oshawa Councillor and fi- nance committee chairman Brian Nicholson agreed. "How the Province can de- fend sending invoices to the Region without the back- ground is a slap in the face of the democratic process" Coun. Nicholson charged in an interview, "(Premier) Mike Harris and his band of thieves like to take our money to make themselves look good" in the eyes of Toronto which benefits from GTA pooling. Unfortunately, there'll probably be only MPPs and no MDs in the room when the lead official of the local health system sits down with local members of the provincial government to plead for help for the two hospitals which serve Ajax and Pickering residents. Rouge Valley Health System chief executive officer AI Whiting presented the prescription to Pickering -Ajax - Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker in a meeting Wednesday and hopes to give it to other Progressive Conservative MPPs from west Durham and east Scarborough in get-togethers he's trying to set up for next week. That prescription calls for an injection of substantial cash to the 1999- 2000 operating budgets of the Ajax and Pickering Health Centre and Centenary Health Centre in Scarborough. Mr. Whiting doesn't like the progno- sis for our two hospitals after they had their annual operating funding from the Province slashed by $7 million for this fiscal year. Hardly what the doctor ordered. In fact, the health system had asked for a $2 -million increase for this year. Now, the hospitals are facing a S9 - million budget deficit and are being asked to operate with less money than they received for 1998-1999. That could leave the health system in critical condition, Mr. Whiting fear. "This funding cut can only be managed by providing less service — not a pleas- ant picture for those living in east Scar - A Pat on the back for a keeper of history borough and west Durham. This move by the government...will directly impact on ... patient care" It's particularly bad news at a time when the area's population continues to grow and demand for hospital services is increasing at both health centres. To illustrate. Centenary's emergency de- partment had to redirect ambulances be- tween 35 and 40 per cent of the time during summer. The situation will only get worse when Whitby's general hospi- tal closes and those patients come west for medical attention. So, the Ajax -Pickering and Scarbor- ough health centres need an expansion of services, not an amputation. "We were poised to increase the level of ser- vice at both sites this year, but this move by the government has put those plans in jeopardy:' says Mr. Whiting. "We don't have the resources to get the job done." We can only hope the Province was reading the wrong patient chart when it filled the prescription for the local hos- pitals, that Queen's Parr came up short of funding because it's unaware of this area's burgeoning population and in- creasing need for improved medical carr. Local MPPs who are more aware of the local picture need to rectify the situ- ation after they meet with Mr. Whiting. They must administer emergency CPR — CPR as in Cash Promptly Required. To the editor: Durham Catholic District School Board teachers have to in- struct 6.5 out of eight classes as a result of their contract with the board. Since this is a two-year contract, that means a teacher should be teaching four classes in Historical society chronicler gets to the root of family tree Once in awhile, those of us who toil in the newspaper business get to work on and be the first to see stories which turn out to be everything our .instructors told us they should be. That happened for me recently when I read a fascinating account of the O'Connor family in Ajax and its long history in the community. This was one of those stories. It explored the life of a family working the land for generations. It delved into the evolution of farming and the way it is being handled today by Sean and Kelly O'Connor, under the eye of their father Maurice. But equally fascinating was the history of the O'Connor family. The family's connection to Ajax began in 1831 and the genetic thread still runs, unbroken, right up until today. And the O'Connors were not your everyday toilers. Along with proving themselves as able workers of the land, they became archbishops (hence the Catholic high school in Ajax), founded churches, chaired Steve ,$n Houston Managing Editor school boards, and were ever active in their community. Their history is one for which they should remain proud. My family history has never really been explored — let alone document- ed — and I often wonder about the connections between my ancestors in Scotland many generations ago to my parents in 1957 when they immigrat- ed to Canada. I'm sure there are no archbishops in my past, or school board chairmen. Yet, I still wonder, often, what the story of my ancestry would be like. Pat McCauley, it must be noted, was the person who did the research on the O'Connor family's roots here. In fact, Maurice O'Connor was so impressed with her work he insisted we use it when providing our readers with the family's history. The O'Connor family's journey from Ireland to Canada was chroni- cled in the quarterly publication of the Pickering Historical Society's Pathmaster and Pat must be given credit where it's due. Surely much hard work and pa- tience is required when attempting to collect this kind of historical data And making stere it's accurate would be a Herculean task. So, my hat goes off to Pat. She traced the fascinating history of a family well known here and shared it with everyone. I may not know the first thing about my family's rats, but I do know who to ask if I ever need to be pointed in the right direction. I'll just ask Pat or the other fine people at the Pickering Historical Society. This gives them three out of four classes in three semesters as was the pre -Bill 160 quota. If teachers arc teaching that extra class in only one semester out of four, then why can't ex- tracurricular% be incorporated into some kind of schedule? Since not all teachers are working the extra j class in the same semester, there should always be 75 per cent of them with time to supervise or coach an activity. In my opinion, it seems that we are simply dealing with some stubborn teachers. I do not say this to offend but rather to draw a comparison. For example, the York Catholic board has regained 95 per cent of its extracurriculars at the secondary level with the same settlement. So, this brings me to the question why are there still no extracurriculars in Durham's Catholic high schools? I cannot be sure but, perhaps, this explains why Durham has gotten such a bad reputation in the media. Speaking as a student, I am at a loss. Again and again, I have been told the teachers are there for the students. At this stage of the game, I am just glad to say that I am on my way out of high school. I can feel only sympathy for the Grade 9 and 10 students who have never enjoyed the experience of sports and clubs at a high school level. Oh well, maybe they will find something better to do - cigarette, anyone? I am responsible for all aspects of the preparations to return to service the four Pickering A units that were laid -up. We are currently doing an Environmental Assessment for the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) on returning the station to service. I have been asked many questions around the whole Environmental Assessment area. Here are two of the most often asked questions. Q I hear you are going ahead with the return to service of Pickering A. Aren't you moving too fast? A It's true that Ontario Power Generation is continuing to do preparatory work to return the Pickering A plant to service; that has been our plan since we made the decision to lay-up the units two years ago. Since then the overall performance of Pickering B has improved significantly as indi- cated in our monthly public report cards. The preparations include the Environmental Assess- ment, design work to enhance safety and environ- mental systems, and detailed procedures for refurbishment. We will not be doing major work on the units until the Environmental Assessment is complete and regulatory approval is received. The Environmental Assessment and other studies will provide valuable and important infor- mation for the Atomic Energy Control Board's licensing process. By pursuing these activities, we're not running ahead of that process, we're doing what we must do in order to keep up with it and support it. For more information, visit our web site at: www.ontariopowergeneration.com/pickering Q What are you doing to ensure the community of the safe return of Pickering A to service? A The health and safety of the community is our top priority in any plan to return Pickering A to service. Approximately $200 million of the projected costs are for improvements to environ- mental and safety-related systems. The attention of the Atomic Energy Control Board is also focused on the environment and safety. That's why they've asked that we provide a thorough Environmental Assessment of the proposed project, and why they'll be looking very closely at our safety-related modifications once the licensing process begins. We need to demonstrate to the AECB that Pickering A will be operated safely and without harmful effects on health and the environment before they approve any proposal to return it to service. The workshops, being pre- sented by the Durham Catholic District School Board, the Durham division of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' As- sociation (OECTA) and the Science Teachers' Association of Ontario, are designed to pro- vide teachers an opportunity to take part in scientific activities using everyday materials, states a board release. Teachers participating in the primary, junior and intermedi- ate seminars will receive a workbook including curricu- lum links and materials to use in the classroom. Meanwhile, OECTA re- leased the fourth of five planned resource kits for teach- ers recently. OECTA Durham elemen- tary president Bill Stratton re- ports the lesson plans and stu- dent activities are being "very well received" in separate school classrooms throughout the region. By the end of the year the federation plans to release re- source packages to match each of the five areas in the science curriculum -life systems, ener- gy and control, matter and ma- terials, structures and mecha- nisms and earth and space sys- tems. The packages, which in- clude hands-on student activi- ties, references for teachers and teaching and assessment strategies, are produced by the union's professional develop- ment department in partnership with the Ontario Catholic Cur- riculum Co-operative. f -a1• L -V When it comes to an impact on our economy, small business is big indeed. CULLF.N Special to the News Advertiser Dozens of swallows fill the sky and a high-pitched concert of trills echoes off the brick walls. Their graceful swoops con- trast with the linear precision of the tiny, Renaissance gardens• clipped hedges and perfumed roses. Off in the distance, the powerful bulk of Chateau d'Am- boisc fills the horizon. King Francois 1 fostered thought. discussion• and experi- mentation at this manor by im it- ing Leonardo da Vinci to France in 1536. Honoured with the King's benefaction, the master was given le Clos Luce to live in and a pension of 7(X) golden crowns per year. The King asked for nothing more in return than the pleasure of listening to Leonardo con- verse. In one corner of the base- ment is the entrance to an under- ground passage connecting le Clos Luce to the chateau, giving the ling a direct link to the home of the master he so admired. Almost 5(X) years later, my husband and I toured Leonardo's house. It is on a quiet back street of Amboise, a town south of the Loire River between Tours and Blois about two hours via Rail Europe from Paris. Already over 60 -years -old. Leonardo arrived from Rome with his student da Metzi and three canvases — Saint Anne, Saint John the Baptist which he finished at le Clos Luce, and his famous painting of the lady with the enigmatic smile. In this pret- ty manor house, he happily con- tinued to paint, sketch and work as an engineer, architect and fes- tival organizer for the court. After only three years in Am- boisc. he died on May 2. 1519 and is buried in the Chapelle St. Hubert on the chateau's grounds. The manor tour begins by climbing the watchtower. Its ex- istence evidence of Ie Clos Luce having been built as a fortified dwelling. The Italian loggia -style gallery connecting the tower to the main house was used as a seating area for the royal patron and his court to observe the fes- tivities Leonardo executed in the front garden. Wandering unescorted through the sparsely decorated rooms where Leonardo lived and worked gives a sense of manor life. Most of the rooms have high, timbered ceilings, plank flooring, huge fireplaces and Renaissance artifacts, paintings, tapestries and furniture. Dominating his bed- room is an immense four-poster bed, nchly curtained with red and gold hangings, its dark wood carved with cherubs and sea ani- mals. The study, has rare pewter dishes and Italian furniture with marquetry of wood, ivory and ebony . For one thing, it's not usually the everyday downtown commuter who has to do the travelling. The travel and the parking just add to the fear and anxiety you feel for the person who has just come through a major operation, and are in a hospital where they know no one and are themselves frightened. We are asking for your support to bring cardiac surgery close to home - to the Centenary Health Centre Site of the Rouge Valley Health System • If you live west or north of the Toronto/905 area, approval has just been given for cardiac surgery close to home (in Mississauga or Newmarket). It's just in the east end that we have been left out - even though we pay the same taxes... Some 450,000 people in the Eastern GTA are being short-changed in health care by the provincial government a Rouge Valley Centenary has been performing highly technical cardiac catheteri:atton for years, and has some of the most highly qualified (award winning) cardiologists in the city, • The facilities can he made ready quickly at a much lower cost than at other hospitals. • The Centenary Site already provides excellent cardiac rehabilitation and various ethnic specific health care programs. • It is reasonable to think that Rouge Valley Centenary is the most logical site for cardiac surgery in the Eastern GTA. Wouldn't you think so? For the government to make their decision they need to hear our voices telling them what we need and what we need them to do The Cardiac Care Community Advisory Group is an all -volunteer organization, consisting of many recovered cardiac patients - who just want the best care for our community. How can you help? • You can sign a Cardiac Care Support Card, when a volunteer comes to your door (9,000 have already been signed), • You can join our door-to-door campaign. Ask a few of your neighbour$ to fill in a Cardiac Care Support Card. If you are interested in being a canvasser to help bring cardiac surgical services to Rouge Valley Health System, Call Phil Diamond at (416) 281-8131 ext. 4920. Please watch for two upcoming information sessions we will be holding on November 11 and 17 in Ajax & Scarborough: • Advances in Cardiac Care • Update on the proposed Cardiac Surgical Centre Featuring Speakers - Dr. Eric Goode, Cardiologist at Rouge Valley Health System Dr. Frank Halparin, Cardiologist at Rouge Valley Health System, Phil Diamond, Community Volunteer and former cardiac patient IUP PAGE 26 NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY EDITION, October 22,1999 LEASE OPTIONS Down Payment Lease Paymer; Totai Due Or. "I'll get by with a little help from my friends. Gonna try with a little help from my friends" Friends have come to the rescue of the Pickering Panthers' general manager who's been forced by the mass resignation of his entire ,:,,aching staff to get behind the hcnch of the moribund Ontario Hockey Association Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League team. Two long-time National Hock - e,. League players and a power Skating coach are lending a hand to their friend and his Panthers whose record dropped to 4.1(>-3 after a tie and two losses in their most recent )utings. Former Toronto Maple Leaf Pcter a-zel, who's still hoping to :itch on with an NHL team to ex- nd his 17 -year career, and 15- ar pro hockey veteran Derek i;nith are "trying to help me get hrough these trying times:' reports lillzzard. They're providmi_, "ad vice" and "giving me another set of eyes" until he hires a new coaching staff. And, Craig Chandler is run- ning the Panthers through power skating drills two times a week. Blizzard is "in the process of in- terviewing coaches" to replace the bench boss and two assistants who walked out on the team last week citing philosophical differences with management. "I'm not going to make a quick decision because I want to get somebody in there who can fill the void:' But, the GM's hoping to have a new coaching staff in "the near fu- ture". The sooner the better. A few healthy bodies would help too. The Panthers went into Monday's home game against the rival Ajax Axe men without five regulars and with one who played injured. Doug (';"Iirr. T Kemp, Oh%cr Lopci, 1.;, Putcrman and Dan Schofield couldn't suit up be- cause of various ailments and in- juries. And David Visconti played hurt. To fill the void, Blizzard called up an entire line from the Ajax - Pickering midget Raiders. lames Cummins, Chris Stewart and Jeff Stewart "played a real strong game for us". Despite that, the Panthers dropped a 5-3 decision to the visit- ing Axemen. Brent Chandler, Mike Hanna and Garrett Winder scored for Pickering. Mike Andreoff tend- ed net. Just 24 hours earlier, the Pan- thers were hammered 14.2 Sunday night by the Wexford Raiders. "The boys were just going through the motions;'says Blizzard. "They were really flat. They didn't re- spond well" It didn't help that Pickenng has had little success in recent years in Wexford's home rink. "It seems we don't have any luck in their barn."
