It may not be a big thing, but

Ms Ivens, who's from

the hospital Aug. 18. Only
shortly after the baby was born
at 5:53 p.m., morn was m -
formed by the doctors that
Kaira had a heart murmur
which would [teed further in-

"I was told a heart murmur
could have been a hok in her

things it could have been:' rc-

to worry very long about it •'
That's because an echo car-

the very [text morning at APHC
by Dr. Roland Beaulieu, a pedi-
atric cardiologist based at Cen-
tenary Health Centre, APHC's
sister hospital in the Rouge
Vallev Health System. Dr.
Beaulieu found the heart mur-

would go away after a few
days.
-If they didn't have that ma-

and myself would have had to
be taken over to Centenary hos-

Ivens.
The reason mom and patient
would have been transported to
the Scarborough hospital for

spokesman Katie Cronin -
Wood, is because APHC's old
snwhi are would simply not
have been up to the task.

Education minister maintains teachers have material they need
Teachers say
they're not ready
BY SUSAN U 1MJU
Staff Writer
While the Ontario Secondary
Scholl Teachers' Federation (OSSTF)
is preparing to launch a study evaluat-
ing the implementation of the new
secondary school curriculum, union
leaders are reporting teachers don't
have all of that curriculum in hand.
With less than a week to go before
the start of the new school year.
OSSTF provincial president Earl
Manners maintains teachers through-
uut the province only have 40 per cent
of the new curriculum for pupils in
Grades 9.
Here in Durham local OSSTF
president Shelley Page says although
the government has released course
profiles, the documents are vague.
..We're a bit in the dark about
W
here this is ourselves:' she said
Tuesday, noting she'll have a better
idea regarding the materials teachers
have received when they return to
their schools today.
"Teachers are starting down a road
and they don't know where it ends.
It's like turning on a single flashlight
in a dark room," Ms. Page notes.
Ho wcvcr, the cducation minister
insists teachers have the materials
they nccd to start the new year suc-
oxssfully.
The curriculum was complete and
out the door in March:' said Picker-
ing -Ajax -Uxbridge MPP Jana Ecker
in an interview last week, noting one
of the first questions she asked when
she took over the ministry in June was
whether everything was ready for
Grade 9.
Ms. Ecker noted the government
has been working on the curriculum
for three years, adding the new learn-
ing guidelines have "gone through
many, many checks and balances to
make sure we've got it right"
And, she reported, after the cur-
riculum was released in March the
government began developing "addi-
tional supports to help teachers:'
That's something the Province hasn't
traditionally done, she added.
"In the past the government sent
out curriculum and said, 'Here it is,
good luck' What we're doing is we're
taking it many steps further. Not only
is the curriculum out the door, there
have been institutes, training the
trainer (workshops) and course pro-
files.
"There are a range of supports.
Some are out, some are coming."
Meanwhile, Mr. Manners reports
the federation plans to visit "100
schools in 100 days- this fall to get
input from teachers, trustees, students
and community groups on the state of
education in Ontario.
"OSSTF is undertaking a compre-
hensive research study on the impact
of the new secondary curriculum, the
funding formula and school gover-
nance on students, teachers, support
staff and communities," he said dur-
ing a speech at a teachers' workshop
= in Toronto Monday.
"The results of the research will
form the basis of a final report on the
state of public education in Ontario
with recommendations and sugges-
tions on the future development of
quality education in Ontario," Mr.
Manners said, noting the federation
plans to conduct the study in conjunc- -
tion with the York University Centre
for Social Research and the Universi-
ty of Toronto's Ontario Institute of
studies in Education.
The union's final report is slated JANET
for release in March 2001. ECKER

She notes having the new
equipment at APHC not only
spares patients the stress of
waiting and having to be

saves the cost and time of the
nurse who has to accompany
the patients and the ambu-

The new echo ultrasound

Get in the game
Ajax and Pickering ripe
for Canada's other official sport
It's Canada's other national sport. Unfortunately, man
Ajax and Pickering residents have never seen the game. Fewer
still have played it.
Even though lacrosse is one of two of the country's official
national sports - we don't need to tell you the other - it's far
less popular than most of the games people play in Canada.
Lacrosse has a far lower profile than soccer and snooker,
bowling and baseball, fiootball and Frisbee.
And that's tar bad because lacrosse is a wonderful spots. If
memory serves, it was a team in one of many fledgling profes-
sional lacrosse leagues which have popped up over the years
that used the marketing slogan "We'll sell you the whole seat,
but you'll only use half of it" That would be the front half be-
cause the: sport keeps spectators on the edge of their seats.
Lacrosse is also known as "the fastest game on two feet" -
two feet, that is, which don't have the benefit of being pro-
pelled by ice skates.
Box lacrosse has much in common with hockey in that it's
played in the %attic arenas on the same -sized surface. Except
the surface - concrete - is a lot less forgiving than ice, which
is tough on lacrosse players checked to the floor in hare legs
and no knee pads. L tcnxse shares nam of the same rules as
hickey. except the referees are a little more liberal with cross-
checking and slashing than their ice zehra counterparts. So it's
a tough game.
But. it's a fast spurt, too. There's no such thing as offside
in lacrosse, which opens the game up to end-to-end passes.
Even the goalies get involved in the offence. often coming out
of their ret to run up the floor and score.
Lacrtssu also shares one of ba%kethall's better rules. The
team on offence is forced to take a shot on net within a few
stxonds of getting into the opposition's zone, thereby pro-
hibiting a squad that's ahead from sitting on a lead by ragging
the hall. Again in the name of speeding up the game.
The game is a perfect sport for hockey players to stay in
shape during the off-season. In fact, many of shinny's top star,
have played lacrosse in the spring and summer before begin-
ning professional hockey careen. Joe Nicuwcndyk, a Picker-
ing Panthers' Junior hockey graduate who led the Dallas Star%
to the Stanley Cup this past winter, played lacrosse in his
hone town of Whitby.
But, diem's done thing that separates lacrosse players from
hockey stars. The former will never get rich at their sport.
They receive Imle or no pay, regardlevv of the level of the
league they're in. They play it for the love of the game.
You'll fall in love with lacrosse too, if you venture over to
Whithy's Iroquois Park Sports Centre Wednesday night at 8
o'clock. 7lic Whitby Warriors and the Burnaby Lakem of
British Columbia play the fourth game of the fret -of -seven
Minto Coq+ championships to decide the best Junior 'A'
hero %%e team in Canada. Whitby held a 2-0sent% lead going
into Tuesday night's third game after our deadline.

and Ntall Maynard both rc%ide in AJax and would appreciate
a few nxrc fans in the stands.
It would be nice if a few of those fans in the stands were
from out this way who fell so in love with Lacrosse that they
dmided to try to organize a kague in Ajax or Pickering - some
hockey coaches, for example, who saw the benefit of keep-
ing their players in shape in the off-season. Then, our children
wcw{dn't have to travel to Whitby or Oshawa to play the sport.
And what a great sport it is. Let's get in the game.
Rigged for danger
In rase mockers have failed to get the message to keep their
rigs safe, we offer a couple of reminders.
Charges are pending against the owner of a dump truck
which was stopped Monday morning when its wheels started
W come off on Wesmey Road mouth of Hwy. 401 in Ajax.
That incident came just days after inspectors were out on
Hwy. 401 in Whithy enforcing the laws for truckers.
About 40 per cent of trucks targeted for safety checks
fabled to make the grade in an all -day truck blitz. Inspectors
focused their efforts on trucks they believed would he suspect.
Special emphasis needs ao be placed on out -of -province
truckers passing through Ontano who may he subject to nom
lax safety regulations in their province or country of origin.
They must clearly he made to know standards of safety are
very high in Ontario and zero tolerance will be shown those
who do not meet our standards.
Admitted Mark Reynolds, enforcement c"rdinafor for
the Ministry of Transportation for Durham Region, the 40 -per
cent failure rate for stopped trucks "is a higher out -of -service
tate than we would get in a random inspection of vehicles:'
However, the fact that 16 of 40 vehicles inspected through-
out the day were removed from service is rat a shining stasis -
tic. It's still far too high after all the publicity, increased fines
and harsh penalties imposed on unsafe truckers the past few
years. Too many operators are still not getting the message.
The drive to keep our major highways safe merit continue
and 'rogue' truckers must pay the penalty until they know the
bottom line. Only properly operating trucks are welcome on
our highways. Our safety depends on iL

To the editor:
1 am writing to thank you for
the wonderful article in the July
20 Pickering News Advertiser
about the reunion of my brother
and I after almost 30 years.
1 have enjoyed reading your
paper while I was over in Cana-
da. I am now back in England as
you can guess.
I had a wonderful time. It was
certainly great to sec my brother
after all these years. We certain-
ly had a lot of news to catch up
on, c%pccially talking about the
old limes — we trd picnty of
laughs. It seemed as if we had
never been apart, even meeting
his wife it seemed as if I had
known her for years.
I really enjoyed myself in the
three weeks 1 was in Canada and
met some lovely people of all
races. It's a beautiful country-, I
did not realize how vast Canada
is. Now I know. I was made so

Campaign trail family
harmony an illusion
Harris's on road to separation during election victory
The first thought of Ontanans
about the separation of Premier
Mike Harris and his wife will be
one of sympathy, but they should
also feel they have been conned.
The sympathy is because a
breakdown hurts those involved
and politicians are subject to more
strains than most including that of
being away from home.
But voters also will remember
the role the premier's wife Janet
played in the June campaign when
Mr. Harris was re-elected. She was
with him at most major events.
She was seen with the premier
when he said his main goal was to
build happy futures for families.
She was with him in school reas-
suring when he told parents he
wanted to give them more power
and at a day-care centre where both
read stories to toddlers and picitacd
with him at campaign headquar-
ters.
She was seen wiping fears and
leaving the room when relatives of
murder victims told moving stories
supporting his appeal for tougher
federal laws.
She was pictured shaking hands
with police when they backed Mr.
Hams in saying more effort is
needed to clear streets of squeegee
kids and beggars.
She was noted above all for
being part of Mr. Harris's en-
tourage when it was jostled by
demonstrators against his unprece-
dented cuts in services.
The night Mr. Harris was re-
elected he attributed victory to his
wife, but this was mostly courtesy,
because his tax cuts won it for him.
But she helped bear out an im-
pression he wanted Uicreate. Most

paigns hoping they will make them
look warmer, more human and sup-
portive of the family. Mr. Harris
deeded his wife particularly be-
cause some view him as harsh and
confrontational in pushing through
reforms.
By being there she implied her
family was an example of the
happy ones Mr. Hams aimed to
create. She won sympathy for her
frank emotion toward crime vic-
tims and when she was jostled, - al-
though no one could claim there
was an attempt to harm her - and
she was there to win votes.
She helped Mc Harris all in all
look kinder, gentler and more
human and like the average guy
next door he claims he is.
Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty
also took his wife Terri on much of
his tour. She was pictured walking
arm -in -arm with him and once
kissing him as he set off bravely
without her.
Mr. McGuinty even had his
mother campaign with him at one
stop, but so did Mr. Harris in that
he paused to visit his on Mother's
Day and a photographer luckily
was on hand and the picture in
newspapers across the province.
New Democrat leader Howard
Hampton's wife Shelley Martel
also is an MPP and ran again, suc-
cessfully. but they considered it so
important the leader he seen with
his wife she broke off campaigning
in her own riding several times to
be with him opening the NDP's
campaign on the legislature's front
lawn and at other events, usually
with their two children.
Among earlier premiers, Liberal
David Peterson took his glamorous
actress wife almost everywhere.
She helped project the trendy Yup-
pie image he wanted together with
their children Ben, Chloe and
Adam and dog Blueberry Muffin.
Tory Frank Miller was the only
premier who gave his wife more
than a backdrop role in an election
and that was by accident.
He caught laryngitis and could
not speak for a day and his wife
Ann gave several passable pep
talks, but conceded she hoped he
would recover quickly so she could
get back to her knitting.
William Davis had no fewer
than three pictures of his wife in his
main election pamphlet at a time
when politicians relied more on
mail. John Robarts and his first
wife Norah were known to have
sonic strain in their marriage late in
his premiership, but they stayed of-
ficially together until several years
after he retired.
Mr. Harris has gone a stage fur-
ther in that he would have known
his marriage was breaking up, but
had his wife give an impression of
a solid relationship to help in an
election.

Having a bad air
You may be sick of your job as a result of the air pollutants fouling your vvorkplace
SY LINDA WHITE'
Staff Wriler
Headaches, fatigue, cough-
ing, sneering, sinus conges-
tion, dizziness.
Those are symptoms that
could easily he misdiagnosed
as the no or a cold. But in
more and more cases, they're
indicators of something much
more serious: problems with
the quality of the air you're
breathing, at home or in the of-
fice.
"There are other signs as
well, including shortness of
breath, nausea and eye, ear.
nose and throat irritation. And
while "it's quite normal that
20 per cent of occupants com-
plain about air quality all the
time, anything beyond that
generally needs to he looked
at." says Craig Mcllmoyle, a
public health inspector with
Durham Region's health de-
partment.
Indoor air quality has be-
come an important concern
that coincides with the trend
toward more tightly -sealed
buildings and energy conser-
vation measures that recircu-
laic indoor air and cut down on
the amount of outside air sup-
ply.
The problem is exacerbated
with an increase in the use of
synthetic materials. cleaning
products. outdoor air pollu-
tion. and such office equip-
ment as laser printers, comput-
ers and photocopiers.
Consider formaldehyde
from unsealed plywtx,d or par-
ticicboard. glues, carpets, fur-
nishings and carbonlcss copy
paper. Add in particulates from
smoke, paper, duct insulation.
water residue, carpets and
heating, ventilation and air
conditiunmg (HVAC) systems.
Throw into the mix volatile
organic compounds from com-
puters, cleaning materials,
paints, adhesives, perfumes
and hairsprays and you have
just some of the factors affect -
ing air quality and comfort.
"Everything is trapped."
Mr. Mcllmoyle explains.
"New carpeting and furniture,
for example. give off vapours.
If your ventilation system is
not working properly, you can
get pockets of bad air. You can
get people in one building
complaining about being tired
and having sore throats, but
people elsewhere in the build-
ing seem OK. -
The problem is not an un-
common one. Indeed, the
terms 'sick building syn-
drome' and 'building -related
illness' have been coined to
describe the cases in which oc-
cupants experience short-term
effects that seem to he linked
to the time they spend in the
building.
For some people. being ex-
posed to sick building syn-
drome can result in varying
degrees of discomfort, reports
Dr. David Leong. a consultant
with the Ministry of Labour.
"Discomfort is one thing." he
says. "If a building is contam-
mated and that contamination
accumulates, there can be
more serious health effects."
According to a report of the
Federal -Provincial Advisory
Committee on Environmental
and fhcupational Health, Le-
gionnaire's disease and Ponti-
ac Fever have resulted from
exposure to an indoor agent.
While concern about sick
building syndrome peaked
about 10 years ago, it has by
no means gone away, reports
Alex Connor, the health de-
partment's environmental
health manager.
Several factors affect in-
door air quality, including
physical layout of the build-
ing, the outdoor climate, the
building's HVAC system, po-
tential contaminant sources,
and the building's occupants.
Physical layout of an office,
for example, plays a crucial
role. Room dividers can limit

Your home: Castle or casket?
Home is where the
health problems breed
For many, their home truly
is their castle: a place to es-
cape from the worries of
everyday Ide: a sanctuary
where you can put your feet
up and relax.
But many homes can also
be a breeding ground for
health problems. That's be-
cause the quality of indoor air
in some homes can be worse
than outdoor air.
And it's no coincidence
that it's happening at the
same dile many homes are
being built tighter than in past
years, and as we use more
products and furnishings that
contain cornpouinds sensitive
to some people.
The symptoms of indoor
air pollutants are the same as
those indicating the so-called
'sick building syndrome'. Be-
cause the symptoms are sim-
ilar to the cold or flu, its im-
portant to note when and
where the symptoms occur, if
they fade or go away when
you are away from home and
if they are triggered when you
return to the house.
And it's important to real-
ize that not everyone will be
affected the same way. Age.
pre-existing medical condi-
tions and individual sensitivity
play an important role in how
you react to indoor air pollu-
tants, explains Alex Connor,
manager of environmental
health at Durham Region's
health department.
Some people. meanwhile,
become sensitized to biologi-
cal atndtfor chemical pollu-
tants after repeated expo-
sures. Thars why its irnpor-
tant to improve the quality of
air you are breathing even if
symptoms arent noticeable.
The most effective way to
do that is to eliminate sources
of pollution or reduce their
emissions. At the top of the
list is tobacco smoke, warns
Mr, Connor. "You have to quit
smoking," he says bluntly.
ALEX CONNOR
Various factors play a role
in how you react to indoor
air pollutants.
"ICs highly unfair for the oth-
ers in your house to be ex-
posed to second-hand
smoke."
Many other pollutants
aren't so obvious but are just
as dangerous. Asbestos, for
example, can be closed or
seated, while gas stoves can
be adjusted to decrease the
amount of emissions.
Increasing the amount of
outdoor air in your home -
opening windows and doors -
may also help lower concen-
trations of indoor air pollu-
tants. Exhaust fans in
kitchens and bathrooms may
also remove contaminants di-
rectly from the room where
the fan is located.
It is especially important to
increase the amount of out-
door air coming indoors when
you are generating high lev-
els of pollutants. Painting,
stripping (paint, warming your
home with kerosene heaters,
sanding and welding are just
some of the activities to be
wary of.
Finally, consider getting an
air cleaner. While they are
generally not designed to re-
move gaseous pollutants, the
amount of air they draw
through the cleaning or filter-
ing element can determine
how effective they are at re-
moving particles from the air.

• Contaminants, occupants:
Smoking, cooking. body and
cosmetic odours can have a
major influence on indoor air
quality systems.
So what do you do if you
suspect a problem:' Health
Canada suggests you define
where complaints are concen-
trated and establish a system
of recording the timing and lo-
cation of complaints that could
include a questionnaire and/or
complaint logs.
It's also important to talk to
your employees, as they arc
probably aware of patterns of
discomfort, including odours.
Notify building occupants of
actions taken to remedy a
complaint and follow up to en-
sure the corrective action has
resolved the problem.

Make mould
old news
Mould can be found in just
about every home and does-
n't necessarily mean red flags
should be raised.
However. -There have
been instances where sus-
ceptible individuals have been
affected by mould," explains
Alex Connor, the Durham Re-
gion health department's
manager of environmental
health.
"It should not be a health
concern for a normal healthy
person, but can be dangerous
for people with health concli-
tons such as asthma, aller-
gies and so on."
Members of the fungus
family, most moulds form fila-
ment -like strands and spores,
which can be transmitted to
humans by air, water, insects
and animals.
According to the health de-
partment, up to 30 per cent of
people with asthma are aller-
gic to moulds and, upon expo-
sure, such symptoms as
wheezing, runny nose, eye ir-
ritation and coughing may
flare.
Some moulds can cause
infections, particularly among
those with immune system
disorders.
But there are several steps
you can take to decrease
mould exposure:
• Repair all water leaks.
• Caulk around windows,
doors, shower stalls and bath-
tubs.
• Vent clothes dryer to the out-
side.
• Use an air conditioner or de-
humidifier during humid
months.
• Regularly clean bathrooms
with disinfectant.
• Clean mouldy areas with a
Meaner, followed by disinfec-
tort using a mixture of one
part bleach to nine parts
water. Wait 15 minutes before
drying completely.
• Ventilate high moisture
areas through such things as
kitchen and bathroom ex-
haustfans.
• Avoid carpeting in bath-
rooms and basements.

The Panthers host the Axemen at the
Pickenng Recreati n Complex tonight.
Wednesday. Sept. I, at 7:30 p.m. in pre-
season OHA Ontario Provincial Junior
'A' Hockcv League action.
The Panthers used a mix of returning
-terans and freshmen players in all
..e games. And. for the most pan, the
reviews are goxxl for the young players
hoping to land a spot on the defending
Eastern Conference champion Panthers.
On Sundday. head coach Enc Ross
notes, the club played well at times in
the contest, bort should have taken better
advantage of scoring chances. However.
the rookies responded with a lex of de-
kininauon and physical play.
" n
1 thought we played well in %pus. I
think the players answered the tell
physically. By that I nx-an the finished
their checks and played well along the
boards and in the corners. I'm a firm be-
liever in making the opposition pay the
price to make the play. We were strong
on the puck and got the puck to the net,
but we could have scored a couple more
goals.-
Veterans
oals -Veterans Mike Hanna and Doug Carr
scored in the Bancroft contest. along
with rookies Johnny Buscema, his sec-
ond goal of the weekend. and Dan
Schofield, who played with the Ajax -
Pickering Raiders 'AAA' midgets last
season.
In Saturday's loss in Bancroft, Mark
Forbes, Bill Duncan, Brent Chandler
and Garnet Winder tallied for the Pan-
thers.
The date with the Axemen on Friday
yielded a strong effort by the Panthers
for most of the contest. although the
game slowed down considerably in the
third period as Pickering shoved some
fatigue. That worries Ross.
We played well in the first half of
the game: we dominated territorially.
We had lots of shots. and I could see they
were starting to gel a little bit. But, the
last 30 minutes, we didn't play as well.
They were tired and that concern me a
bit. It's something we're going to have
to address."
Hanna Ian Law. Busdema Winder
and Carr scored fix Pickering.
Many young players have been mak-
mg an impression on Ross in the early
stages of the season. He points to Ajax -

The Panthers' goaltending situation
is far from settled as the team still has
five puck stoppers in camp. Mostly like-
ly to stick around is Paul Guthrie, who
played several games with the club last
season, but is headed, along with Mike
Andreoff, to Ontario Hockey League
camps this week. Chris McLeod, who
played with the Ajax -Pickering Raiders
midgets last season; Darren McConaghy
of the Richmond Hill Stars midgets; and
Garrett McKinnon, from the Ajax -Pick-
ering bantams, are also still in the hunt
for roster spots.
The Panthers currently have 35 play.
ers in camp. Ross says he hopes to have
that number pared down to about 22 in
time for the regular season to start in two
weeks. The remaining cuts to the roster
will be complicated by the fact 10 play-
ers currently in camp are headed to On-
tario Hockey League try -outs later this
week.
The Panthers travel to Oshawa to
play the Legionaires in pre -season ac-
tion on Thursday. Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. then
have a return match at home against Os-
hawa on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. to
close out exhibition play.
The Panthers play their league home
opener against the Caledon Canadians
on Sunday. Sept. 19 at 8:30 p.m.
