woman's death look like suicide.
Mr. Watkins has pleaded not
guilty to first-degree murder.
Court heard that in February
1997 Durham Regional Police
Constable Dave Robertson spoke
to Dr. William Wayne Murray at
the Centre of Forensic Sciences
about submitting the electrical
cord found wrapped around Ms.
White's neck, for the purpose of
DNA analysis.
Dr. Murray, however, testified
he advised against examining the
cord, telling Const. Robertson

First step taken on Pickering s `Millennium Trail'
Lakefront plan
gets thumbs up
BY MARIANNE TAKACS
Szaff Writer
PICKERING — The Town
is attempting to launch an am-
bitious project as the first step
in creating a 'Millennium
Trail' across the Pickering wa-
terfront from the Ajax border
to the Rouge River.
Council voted last week to
authorize a committee of
politicians and community
representatives to prepare ap-
plications for funding from the
federal and provincial govern-
ments for special projects to
murk the millennium.
The money would be used
to begin the revitalization of
the Town's waterfront with the
construction of a 'Millennium
Square' at the foot of Liver-
pool Road, and of sections of
an interpretive trail along the
Jakeahore which would ulti-
mately trace Pickering's histo-
ry from First Nations Settle -
meat through to the new mil-
lennium.
lt's expected the project
will cost about $2.5 million
--and councillors arc somewhat
:-concerned about how much
-would have to come from tax -
::payers' pockets.
So they decided to have the
:-funding applications returned
-.to Pickering council for final
approval before being for-
: -warded to Ottawa and Queen's
:-Park.
There will always be a
:_reason not to do this;' said
:-Ward 2 local Councillor Mark
::Holland, who proposed the
:project.
But he noted another op-
:_portunity for outside funding
for the waterfront may not
arise for a very long time.

The ad hoc committee
which has been working on
the project includes Coun.
Holland, Ward 2 Regional
Councillor Doug Dickerson
and representatives from local
community groups.
It also includes Dave Steele
and Craig Bamford, respec-
tively the chairman and vice-
chairman of the Town's Water-
front 2001 Task Force estab-
lished in 1997 to draw up a
community 'vision' for the
lakefront.
Mr Steele and Mr. Bam-
ford were among those unhap-
py with the Millennium Trail
proposal when it was present-
ed to Pickering council last
week.
They were concerned it
concentrated too many facili-
ties and the resources to build
them near the foot of Liver-
pool Road and would leave lit-
tle else for developing a trail
along the rest of the water-
front.

Integrated transit service for public,
separate students may soon hit the road
BY SUSAN 0'NE11J
Staff Writer
After several delays, plans for the
region's public and separate school
boards to form an integrated trans-
portation system in Durham may soon
get rolling.
The separate board is re -visiting
plans to form a shared transportation
system with the public board follow-
ing the release of a report urging
school boards to reduce costs by de-
veloping a joint approach to busing.
In a report to trustees Monday,
Durham Catholic District School
Board superintendent of support ser-
vices Walter Yewchyn outlined a re-
port entitled A New Approach to
Transportation Funding that's been
submitted to the Province by the
Transportation Funding Review Com-
mittee, an expert panel established in
the spring of 1998 to examine school
bus transportation in Ontario.
That committee. which is co-
chaired by Ron Trbovich, the Durham
District School Board's superinten-
dent of business, is recommending
school boards throughout the province
move toward a joint delivery of school
busing within their region in an effort
to reduce busing costs.
And, in his report, Mr. Yewchyn
said "immediate transportation im-
provements" could be made if a joint
system is adopted in Durham.
The Province has not yet responded
to the committee's recommendations
which essentially call on boards to de-
velop a system similar to the plan
that's been discussed in Durham for
the past few years.
That project. which Durham Dis-
trict School Board trustees had hoped
to implement during the current school
year, was delayed pending approval by
the separate school board last summer.
"We're still ready to go" says Mr.
Trbovich. "We're anxious to get
going.-
The
oing "The two boards have been unable to
agree on the delivery of the integrated
busing system which would be based
on a Pilot Project launched in Picker-
iog in the fall of 1997. That project
saw the boards adopt magge-d start
times at arra schools to accommodate

a computer-generated transportation
system allowing buses to serve both
public and Catholic schools in the
town.
"The Pickering pilot project. -was
successful;' Mr. Yewchyn said in his
report to trustees. "The school boards
successfully shaved approximately
5500.000 from their annual transporta-
tion budgets. Based on this model sim-
ilar savings can be achieved if the sys-
tem is implemented in Ajax- Whitby
and Oshawa. -
However, separate board trustees
voted Monday to refer two recommen-
dations, which would have enabled the
project to finally move ahead, to the
board's transportation committee for

;Integrated transit service for public,
separate students may soon hit the road
BY SUSAN O'NF1LL
Staff Writer
After several delays, plans for the
region's public and separate school
boards to form an integrated trans-
portation system in Durham may soon
get rolling.
The separate board is re -visiting
plans to form a shared transportation
system with the public board follow-
ing the release of a report urging
school boards to reduce costs by de-
veloping a joint approach to busing.
In a report to trustees Monday,
Durham Catholic District School
Board superintendent of support ser-
vices Walter Yewchyn outlined a re-
port entitled A New Approach to
Transportation Funding that's been
submitted to the Province by the
Transportation Funding Review Com-
mittee, an expert panel established in
the spring of 1998 to examine school
bus transportation in Ontario.
That committee, which is co-
chaired by Ron Trbovich, the Durham
District School Board's superinten-
dent of business, is recommending
school boards throughout the province
move toward a joint delivery of school
busing within their region in an effort
to reduce busing costs.
And, in his report, Mr. Yewchyn
said "immediate transportation im-
provements' could be made if a joint
system is adopted in Durham.
The Province has not yet responded
to the committee's recommendations
which essentially call on boards to de-
velop a system similar to the plan
that's been discussed in Durham for
the past few years.
That project, which Durham Dis-
trict School Board trustees had hoped
to implement during the current school
year, was delayed pending approval by
the separate school board last summer.
"We're still ready to go," says Mr.
Trbovich. "We're anxious to get
going.-
The
oing "The two boards have been unable to
agree on the delivery of the integrated
busing system which would be based
on a pilot project launched in Picker-
ing in the fall of 1997. That project

times at area schools to accommodate

a computer-generated transportation
system allowing buses to serve both
public and Catholic schools in the
town.
"The Pickering pilot project...was
successful;' Mr. Yewchyn said in his
report to trustees. "The school boards
successfully shaved approximately
$500,000 from their annual transporta-
tion budgets. Based on this model sim-
ilar savings can be achieved if the sys-
tem is implemented in Ajax. Whitby
and Oshawa."
However, separate board trustees
voted Monday to refer two recommen-
dations• which would have enabled the
project to finally move ahead, to the
board's transportation committee for
further review before they vote on the
issue.
Meanwhile, Mr. Trbovich says the
transportation review committee is
continuing to develop its recommen-
dations and will likely submit another
report to the Ministry of Education
and Training soon.

Make one case
for nuclear licence
Ajax, Pickering officials must
get together for united stand
The nuclear station in our midst casts a long shadow. It
employs hundreds of Ajax and Pickering residents who feed
their families from the income they earn. Those power plant
workers and their spouses and children pour untold millions
of dollars into the local economy each and every year. The
Pickering station provides electricity to hundreds of thou-
sands of citizens of south central Ontario and beyond. Those
are the pros.
On the negative side of the ledger, the nuclear station is
showing signs of its aging, sometimes giving indications it's
more of a liability than an asset. Many area residents, espe-
cially citizens of Pickering, argue the presence of the power
plant in their backyards has driven down their property val-
ues. A good number of members of the public in Ajax and
Pickering live in the fear that the worst could take place at the
power plant in their midst - a catastrophic nuclear accident
that would devastate if not destroy the entire area.
Tbe futures of the Pickering nuclear station and the two
communities in its shadow we "inextricably linked", to bor-
row from a Town of Ajax submission that will be made to the
Atomic Energy Control Board in a couple of weeks when the
federal nuclear regulatory agency holds a hearing on the re-li-
ceasing of the power plant -
What the submission actually says is. "rite futures of PNP
(Pickering Nuclear Plant) and the town of Ajax are inextrica-
bly linked." And that reference to the "town of Ajax" only and
the exclusion of a mention of the town of Pickering is a symp-
tom of what could be a problem when the AECB sits down
March 25 to decide the length of operating permit that the
power station should be granted. You see. Town of Ajax offi-
cials arc recommending a two-year licence for the nuclear
plant as Ontario Hydro has requested and AECB staff have
recormnended. On the other hand. Pickering civic leaders feel
a one-year permit is more appropriate to keep Hydro on a
short leash.
It's important to nae that elected politicians and appoin-
od bureaucrats in both towns seem to concur on several
things. In short. they agree that, while Hydro has accom•
planed a kx to remedy things at the problem -plagued nuclear
station, much more needs to be done to bring the plant up to
muff.
In fact. Ajax and Pickering officials agree on so many is-
sues revolving around the station that we're puzzled why they
don't concur on one of the more unportant ones - the length
of the operating licence Hydro should be given once the cur-
rent permit expires at the end of the month
We wonder if Ajax and Pickering leaden haven't caauh-
ed each other and therefore have failed to gat their act togeth-
er on such an important mailer that affects all residents. of both
towns. We worry that their failure to do so is a symptom of
dee unwillingness on the part of sonic politicians in the two
communities to reach across the invisible boundary dividing
there municipalities to their colleagues on the aha side. After
all. some council members in the two towns are hesitant to
even consider sharing services among the municipalities. let
alone canamptate for one moment the possibility of a full-
blown amalgamation.
Arc, we're concerned about how this lack of cohesion on
the part of Ajax and Pickering officials will play before the
AECB when it considers the nuclear plant licence.
Our local civic leaders have two weeks until they appear
before the AECB. We urge then to get together, conwh, and
present a unified position before the AECB. Only one case
should be made. Just as the futures of the nuclear staioo and
the two towns in its shadow ate inextricably linked, so too
should officials of Ajax and Pickering be united when speak-
ing out about the power plot.

To the editor:
The most disturbing thing
about Leslie Klotz's March 2
News Advertiser letter to the editor
about the wickedness of homosex-
uality is not so much the content of
her letter but the fact she uses the
guise of religion to vent her preju-
dices.
Ms. Klotz is worse than a bigot.
because she hides behind the
goodness of her religion, while ac-
tually perpetrating her own brand
of evil.
Organized religion is the great-
est evil ever to beset mankind.
Simply look at the history of our
world, and you will see religion as
the cause for most wan and atroc- .
sties. If God is supposed to be
onvu-benevolent and omnipotent.
then not one drop of blood would
have been spilled in the history of
this earth. The hypocrisy astounds
me.
Letters such as Ms. Klotz's do
not surprise me: they sadden me, i
as I realize that her children will ,
grow up without the ability to
think and ace for themselves. And
that is indeed Ms. Klotz's monu-
ment to her racist -like beliefs.

the new Ontario Hydro Services Company. It's that simple.
The name on your electricity bill will change, but you'll

eventually won it.
Only after the match was it
discovered that she had suf-

whiplash.
Burden was then pulled
from the competition by med-
ical staff at the games, but On-
tario went on to defeat Quebec
18-6 in points in the gold -
medal final.
Individually, Burden's re-
sults from the team competi-
tion automatically earned her
a bronze medal for her weight
class.
In retrospect, the Grade 10
student at Pine Ridge Sec-
ondary School says she was
happy with the individual
bron/e medal, but would have
liked the chance to compete
for gold as she had beaten the
gold -medallist from
Saskatchewan. Kimberly
Hardy, at several competitions
this vear.
"Yeah• I would have liked
to fight for it. But. I think it
was a wonderful event. 1 had a
really good time:' she says.
Despite the injuries, she has
received clearance to compete
at the Canadian National Ju-
nior Judo championships in
Rimouski. Quebec, starting on
March Ili.
She'll compete in her same
under -57 kilo weight class at
nationals.
"I think that if I allow my
body a rest. I should be OK by
that time:' says Burden.
Two other members of the
Ajax Budokan Judo Club
fared well at the Canada Win-

Meaghan Fulton, of Whit-
by, earned a gold in the
women's team competition
and won silver in the 48 -kilo

Bobby Currie, of Toronto.

Jenny Burgess. 17, a member of

The Grade 12 student at Dunbar-
