The Martineaus brought the bird home and contacted the Toronto Wildlife Cen- tre (TWC), an organization the City has used since 2006. The Martineaus were told someone was on the way to pick up the bird and, in the meantime, the phone operator offered advice to properly care for the bird until someone arrived. The Martineaus put the bird in a box in the basement in order to keep it warm and away from the cat. Al- though the bird’s injury was not known to the family, it was in obvious distress. “It really looked rough and looked like it wasn’t going to make it,” Audrey’s father, Gerard Martineau, explained. Mr. Martineau said a volunteer arrived at their Pickering home within 15 minutes from the time he called, and drove the bird to TWC’s location at Allen Road and Shep- pard Avenue in Toronto, despite rush-hour traffic. Since TWC experiences numerous calls regarding injured animals, the Mar- tineaus were told they’d receive a call if the bird healed and was ready to go back into its natural habitat. “After about a month-and-a-half, we fig- ured the bird didn’t make it and we had tried our best,” Mr. Martineau explained. But, on Good Friday, the family received a phone call from TWC, informing the Martin- eaus Chubby Cuteness had in fact survived, and wanted to know if the kids would be interested in taking part in the release. “We were just ecstatic,” Mr. Martineau said. “We were all so excited. I just couldn’t believe it.” The following day, March 22, a TWC vol- unteer brought the bird to Old Finch Road and Sewells Road in northeast Scarborough, and let the Martineau girls free Chubby Cuteness close to the area in which she was found. “I freed her in Altona Forest,” Audrey said, AJ Groen/ News Advertiser photo Audrey Martineu, right, found an injured House Finch on the street where she lives. The family had a unique visitor for three days last week: a deer 11-year-old Alexan- dra Grave named Lily after the family dis- covered her in the backyard last Tuesday night. “She’ll look up at us and it’s like she’s a little dog looking up at us,” Alexandra’s mother, Teresa Grave, said at the time. Ms. Grave said Lily was obviously injured since its front right hoof was deformed and she was limping. This prompted the family to call the Dur- ham Humane Society, whom Ms. Grave said directed them to the Toronto Wildlife Centre, which said there was nothing it could do (it doesn’t cover Ajax). Next, the Graves’ neighbour, Janet Pedersen, sug- gested they call Animal Services at the Town of Ajax. Ms. Pedersen said Animal Services said it was probably going to give birth and should be gone by morning. “The deer’s hurt and nobody seems to want to be doing anything,” Ms. Graves said. “I feel like my hands are tied. I don’t know what to do.” Lily was still there the next morning, so Ms. Pedersen called Animal Services again and, later that day, three bylaw officers came to assess the situation. “They said to ‘shoo’ it away as night fell and maybe it would make its way back to the forest. “Not a wise thing we all thought as, again, we live in an area where people rarely stop at the stop signs and at night, who was going to see a deer crossing?” she wrote in a letter. Town of Ajax bylaw services manager Derek Hannan explained that’s the com- mon practice of dealing with displaced deer, explaining nine times out of 10, they find their way back home. “Once nightfall starts to come they will try to (go) back where they came from,” he said, adding deer are often spooked by people so they’ll usually roam around at night. Animal Services determined the deer was OK Wednesday, but on Thursday af- ternoon, Lily’s condition worsened after she finally left the Graves’ backyard when it was spooked by an SPCA officer who tried to address the situation. Mr. Hannan explained Animal Servic- es doesn’t normally get involved in deer cases, along with most other Animal Ser- vices (since they’re very large animals), but since it became a danger to residents, pe- destrians and drivers by running through the streets, it had to. “Obviously we worry about the public first and foremost,” he said. Mr. Hannan added Lily was so badly in- jured she had become a hazard to herself when “it had severe gashes on its under- belly” from hopping fences. Unfortunately, he said, animal services “had to take control of the animal” and brought it to the Town’s vet, who deter- mined she should be euthanized. “Deer are big strong animals,” Mr. Han- nan explained, adding the situation could have been different if it was a fawn, not a 113-kilogram adult. Shooting it with a tranquilizer to free it later is no easy task because it’s difficult to hit a moving target, and shooting at it would be extremely dangerous in a resi- dential neighbourhood, he explained. Mr. Hannan said deer commonly wan- der around areas in Ajax since there’s a lot of green space. Although it’s rare for them to venture into actual subdivisions, “it’s not unheard of.” Deer makes Ajax backyards her temporary home This deer, named Lily by Ajax residents, hung out in local backyards for three days and was eventually caught by the Town of Ajax Animal Services and later euthanized. A happier ending for this deer PICKERING — Pickering resident Donna Thorne was awoken at around 3 a.m. Tues- day morning by terrible screaming coming from her back yard. When she turned on the backyard lights, she was horrified to see a deer hanging by its legs, stuck in the fence. “I was hyperventilating because I adore animals,” Ms. Thorne said. The panicked animal-lover eventually called Durham Regional Police and said an officer came immediately and saved the deer. “They walked him to the back and he was on his way,” she said. She added the deer’s saviour was great and even called her later that night to make sure she was alright. Friends concerned about plans to move mental-health beds, cut nurses By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Management and the Central East Local Health Integration Network are already discussing alternate medical uses that will follow the removal of mental health beds at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital, says Tom Atkins. The chairman of the Rouge Valley Health System Board of Directors said the talks are in response to a letter from Friends of the Ajax Pickering Hospital co-chairs Bill Parish and Yvonne Bosch. They wrote the letter after the RVHS board approved the Deficit Elimination Plan Tuesday. The hospital is in a financial crisis and plans to cut up to 220 positions (60 at RVAP) between RVAP and the Scarborough site (Centenary) within the next three years. Another major change will be moving Ajax’s 20 mental health beds to Scarborough, something the Friends are not pleased with, and they’re asking the Central East LHIN Board of Directors not to approve the plan until the public is consulted. “The Friends believe strongly in the prin- ciple of “engaged communities, healthy communities,” the letter states. “The Friends urge the Board to see that these ‘principles of community engagement’ are upheld by all the parties to these decisions.” Mr. Atkins said a number of people or groups including Mr. Parish, the United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge, and the Health Services Committee of the Region of Dur- ham, have been consulted. In consultations, Mr. Atkins explained the long wait times in the emergency rooms was one of the biggest issues. In the plan, it was announced eight beds will be introduced to RVAP’s medical unit to improve patient flow. “We believe the patients and citizens of Ajax-Pickering will be better served by the actions that will be taken,” he said. The letter criticized moving the mental health beds, saying 18 per cent of people older than 15 accessed a physician for men- tal health concerns in 2004, according to the CE LHIN Integrated Health Services Plan. That’s 54,000 people in Ajax, Pickering and Whitby, the letter stated, and also suggested the Mental Health Unit will be left almost vacant. But, RVHS chief of psychiatry, Dr. Steve Fishman, noted in a press release fewer and fewer mental health patients require hospi- talization. Plus, mental health crisis hours will be expanded to 16 hours instead of the previous 12 at RVAP. RVHS President and CEO Rik Ganderton said leaving it empty is “absolutely not the intention” and added pa- tients will not be moved out for five months. Mr. Ganderton said the only reason Cen- tenary was chosen is because it has the space for the entire Mental Health Unit and Ajax doesn’t. The idea is to consolidate the unit to create higher efficiency. Mr. Parish and Ms. Bosch are also con- cerned with the nursing shortage. Between the two sites, 72 nurses will be leaving over the next three years. “Spin it as you will, but the levels of service will severely decline,” they wrote. “Even now with present staffing levels, the nursing staff is struggling to serve present patient needs.” But, Mr. Atkins said RVHS will benchmark itself against hospitals that run at higher efficiency rates to ensure it delivers the best quality of service possible. Also, he noted performance will be closely monitored. Carol Oates, the Ontario Nurses Associ- ation’s bargaining unit president for RVHS, says details could change when the ONA gets notice of the changes Monday. Ms. Oates explained how care will be delivered is not usually discussed until the plans go to the union. She said it’s easy to say the nurs- ing staff just has to work more efficiently, but there are many variables to take into consid- eration. “(The) government and board care about dollars and cents more than imple- mentation, who it effects and how patients will be cared for,” she said. For example, Ms. Oates explained al- though the hospital claims it can shorten hospital stays in order to be more efficient, each individual is different. For example, if there is a language barrier, that patient may require more time than others. Ms. Oates also said she’d like to learn where all of the hospital’s money has gone. Rouge Valley has a $78 million long-term debt and capital deficiency. Mr. Hargrove and CAW Economist Jim Stanford held a news conference at the Royal York Hotel Tuesday afternoon where they emphasized the union’s firm stance as it heads into what promises to be a challeng- ing set of negotiations with the Big Three automakers this fall. “We are not going to take less money for our workers,” Mr. Hargrove said. “We could all work for nothing; we don’t have a market for the product so if cutting wages makes the investment community feel better, the real- ity is it does not solve the problem.” Mr. Stanford summarized the union’s ar- guments against a two-tier wage and benefit structure, as created after past negotiations between the automakers and the U.S. auto- workers union, the UAW. That agreement included historic conces- sions to GM in order to keep plants operating south of the border. One of the concessions the UAW made was agreeing to two-tier wages for any new business that is awarded to a U.S. plant. So if the Impala, which is cur- rently produced in Oshawa, is awarded to a U.S. plant, the workers building it will earn $14.20 an hour, as opposed to the $27 per hour they previously earned. Last year’s agreement between the UAW and management divided jobs into “core” and “non-core” jobs. The wage rate for new workers hired into the non-core jobs will be permanently cut in half and benefits still fur- ther. This agreement was sold on the basis of needing to compete with the Japanese transplants and doing it in a way that would shift the concessions to future workers. Contracts for Canadian autoworkers with GM, Ford, and Chrysler expire in six months and talks between the union and automak- ers have been started earlier than usual given the “perfect storm” of negative cir- cumstances creating difficult conditions for bargaining. They include the strengthening Canadian dollar, “unfair trade” policies that have seen a flood of imports cut into market share, the softening U.S. economy and high cost of oil, among others. Unfair federal trade policies are to blame for the loss of market share due to the flood of imports coming out of Korea and other foreign countries, Mr. Hargrove said. Mean- while the Big Three they are restricted from selling their vehicles in those markets. Mr. Hargrove also took aim at Canada’s fi- nance minister, Jim Flaherty, who represents Whitby-Oshawa. Mr. Flaherty has criticized the McGuinty provincial Liberals for not cut- ting corporate taxes as a means to support the softening manufacturing industry. “(Flaherty’s) solution is to lower corporate taxes. Lower taxes are not going to make a difference,” said Mr. Hargrove. Canadian auto workers are among the most productive, he said adding that a GM spokesman said earlier Tuesday that the Canadian GM plant in Oshawa is considered that company’s most productive in compari- son to its plants around the world. With the Canadian dollar strengthening, automakers had to pay Canadian workers more with the average Canadian autowork- ers earning $32.50 per hour, about three dollars more than American workers. But with their productivity ranked at 10 per cent or more above their American counterparts, the cost difference balances out he said. Also the average U.S. worker costs the companies $2 to $3 more than Canadians because health care benefits are more expensive in the U.S., which doesn’t have a public medicare system. WHITBY — A mistrial has been declared in proceedings against a man caught up in a drug bust in Ajax almost two years ago. Noel Datta’s trial on drug-trafficking charges began March 17 and jurors had heard several days of testimony before Su- perior Court Justice Bruce Glass declared a mistrial. Reasons for the mistrial cannot be reported. Mr. Datta, who pleaded not guilty at the beginning of his trial, was busted in May 2006 after an extensive undercover investi- gation targeting cocaine trafficking in Ajax and Pickering. Mistrial declared in Ajax drug case S ometimes, especially in moments of great stillness or, for instance, when my agent hasn’t called in a week or so, I am vividly aware of the arc of my life. I can almost see it all trailing out behind me in a splendid gentle curve with me, in my current moment, sitting happily at the apogee. I had one of these moments last evening as, at the end of a pleasant walk, I stood, gazing up into a clear, star-filled sky and breathed in the crystalline silence of my little town in winter. Looking back along that arc I realize that certain signposts have disappeared from view. My backyard, I notice, is no longer filled, as it once was, with snow forts and tiny boot prints. The drifts there remain unspoiled and strangely barren, save for a snow sculpture of a huge chair and ottoman. At least my wife still likes to play in the snow. The tree fort, too, is gone. Only a ghost- ly, rusting bike wheel nailed high up in the branches remains as witness to the burning imaginations that once played there. I am filled, briefly, with a sadness, a parent’s lament to a lost, magical time. But a further glance at the arc and I am reminded that nothing is ever really lost. Just changing. Ever changing. There are new signposts springing up everywhere. Informing me of where I am now and where I may be heading. At times they appear so suddenly I find myself banging into them. Tree forts and snow forts and boot prints have been replaced by IPods and amps and drum kits. Pleasant Sunday car outings are now nervous, tongue-biting rides beside teen drivers, parental boots straining at phan- tom brake pedals. The family room no longer rings with the sound of rolling dice and rousing Monopoly games, but the coy laughter of mascara-painted girls . . . sitting beside and sometimes on top of boys. Finally, babysitters and adult nights out have been replaced by popcorn munch- ing and movie watching, my wife and I trying in vain to keep each other con- scious as we await the safe return of our maddeningly nocturnal offspring. And when they finally do go to bed, Goodnight Moon and Where The Wild Things Are gather dust on the bookshelf; my reading with children now confined to wrestling through a high school course prospectus. One of the interesting and frankly terri- fying things about raising children is that, like living, breathing sundials, they mark the passage of our lives. I imagine people who live without chil- dren must be in a kind of perpetual stasis, like living in a home with no mirrors. Not a bad thing, mind you, for until I had a teenager under my roof, I had always felt like I was still 16 or 17 in many ways. But you cannot help but feel a little older, feel time slipping by, when you sit down at breakfast and they’re suddenly taller than you, when yours are the smallest shoes on the mat. When the signposts are flying by. That’s when the arc appears. Still, it’s comforting. I like my life. I like where I’ve been and I look forward to what lies ahead. I like the journey I’m on. F ourth time a charm to pass handheld cellphone driver’s bill? I f at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Don’t take no for an answer. If you get a busy signal, just call back later. All those old sayings, especially that last one, certainly apply to tena- cious Durham MPP John O’Toole, who despite being rebuffed three times pre- viously, is back at it again. The veteran provincial representa- tive is launching his fourth attempt to have the Ontario government bring in legislation that would ban drivers from using handheld cellphones. This MPP, despite repeated hang-ups, is on the horn again, trying to make his point that it’s unsafe to hold the phone and talk while driving. Good thing he doesn’t give up. Legislation that outlaws handheld phones while navigating a vehicle is not uncommon in other jurisdictions. It’s one thing to use a hands-free device -- which after all, is not a whole lot differ- ent than listening to the radio or talking to a passenger -- but quite another to try to fiddle with a cellphone and keep your attention on the road. Driving is a serious business that requires full attention. And that’s the point of Mr. O’Toole’s private member’s bill. Backbenchers always have a very difficult time getting any legisla- tion passed. Governments usually demand the credit for anything wor- thy of becoming law. Usually, there isn’t much of an appetite for following through on an opposition MPP’s idea. But given that the Province will take steps to ban smoking while driving with children in cars, and given the aggres- sive moves against racing and driving, perhaps the McGuinty government will give this idea the attention it deserves. In the decade since Mr. O’Toole first tried to get this legislation on the books, advances in hands-free devices have been dramatic and there is no reason to resist a move to stop drivers from using handheld cellphones. It’s just too risky to continue down a road that can lead to tragedy. Who can forget the horrible result when a pickup driver and his child crashed through a railway crossing in Durham -- and a coroner’s inquest revealed the driver had been talking on a cellphone when the impact occurred? Driving is hard enough without the added danger of trying to work a hand- held device while navigating our roads. It’s time to outlaw this practice. To the best of my knowledge, this is a first for our school,” said Mr. Malleau. St. Francis de Sales was nominated for an award in the improvement in academics category, after a steady increase in its academic rating over the past five years. The school had an overall rating of 9.5 in 2007 after receiving a 5.5 rating in 2003. St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Toronto won first prize, while Denlow Public School in Toronto and St. Justin Martyr Catholic School of Unionville were runners-up. There are two other categories -- academic achievement in excess of expectations, and over- all academic achievement. Winning schools re- ceived $3,000, while the two runners-up in each category received $1,000. “Academic achievement in excess of expecta- tions challenges the notion that only schools in rich areas do well. In this category, you might find schools with breakfast or lunch programs that aren’t in other areas,” said Lisa-Diane Fortier, co-ordinator of outreach programs for the Fraser Institute. The awards are co-ordinated by the Fraser Institute, the think tank that produces the Fraser report on schools’ academic successes. Awards are based on Economic Quality Assessment Of- fice (EQAO) ratings and other factors, said Ms. Fortier. “We look at the academic improvement of each school over the past five years in all three catego- ries. “We started the awards because schools should be recognized for their hard work on a provincial level, then the public becomes aware of what schools in their area are doing. Other schools which aren’t doing as well may get some ideas from the winning school,” she said. “From our perspective, it’s a nice confirmation that what we’re doing is recognized. It’s good news for our kids that their hard work is being acknowledged and a confirmation to our staff that they’re on track,” said Mr. Malleau. The Garfield Weston awards, which began in 2005 in Ontario, exist in three other provinces -- Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. Kevin McAlpine, a teacher with the school of justice, got the news on Wednesday, just one day prior to the government’s announcement it was forming the five-member council to set up neces- sary reforms to the belea- guered RCMP. The need for reforms to the RCMP’s management structure, its account- ability and oversight, and workplace disciplinary policies were identified in an earlier independent investigator’s report. “I was asked three or four weeks ago if I’d consider doing this,” Mr. McAlpine said. “I haven’t met the other people on the council yet, so we’ll meet and figure out a work plan. “There are 48 recom- mendations that a gov- ernment task force made, ranging from leadership resources to culture. We want to work with the RCMP and government to put the RCMP more on a business footing.” Mr. McAlpine was chief of police for the Durham Regional Police Service from 1997 to 2005, and was chief of police at Pe- terborough Community Police Service from 1986 to 1997. In 2005, he became a member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, awarded by the Governor General of Canada, and has also been awarded the police exemplary service medal and bar. “A lot of the issues that will be addressed are the same as those I’ve dealt with as chief of police; things like overseeing the employees, and managing the complaints process. I’ve learned a few tricks along the way,” he said. The council appoint- ments, which include a former acting police com- missioner, three former senior public servants and private sector managers, will last for a year. By the end of that year, the federal government will be ready to put in place a management board for the RCMP, Mr. McAlpine said. Alan Smith appeared briefly by video in an Oshawa courtroom Wednesday morning and was remanded in cus- tody. The 56-year-old Mr. Smith was ar- rested at his daughter’s Cobourg home March 17 for the second-degree mur- der of Beverly Smith. Ms. Smith, 22, was shot in the back of the head in her Raglan home on Dec. 9, 1974. A tired-looking Mr. Smith, his thin- ning red hair tousled, said little during his appearance from the Central East Correction Centre in Lindsay, uttering only his name -- “Alan Dale Smith” -- when asked to do so by a justice of the peace. He nodded silently when told he’d appear next in Superior Court in Whitby. Speaking on his behalf was Alan Richter, who acted as agent for Tom Balka, the Oshawa lawyer retained by Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith’s arrest was a sensational break in the cold case, a file that un- derwent a months-long review by a team of 10 Durham detectives backed up by uniformed police. Mr. Smith was a former neighbour and acquaintance of the slain woman, to whom he is not related, and was questioned by police during the original investigation into the killing. The valuation framework must be established so, if the need aris- es, the Durham District School Board can review the population of its current schools to see wheth- er any need to be closed. An ac- commodation review committee is then struck and public consulta- tion begins. “I believe in public consulta- tion and that hasn’t happened. I’m not supporting this because I be- lieve I’m not in a position to know what’s good for the entire region,” said Whitby Trustee John Dolstra. “Each school must have a valu- ation framework, and to not ap- prove this tonight would mean we’re not in compliance with the requirements of the Province,” said Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper. Lygia Dallip, of Watson and As- sociates, consultant to the board, told trustees there must be a pupil accommodation review in place in order to establish an accommoda- tion review committee (ARC). “This has not been developed in some kind of secrecy cloak. It’s unfortunate we’re giving to the public the sense that there’s been internal politics at play here. I take offence that we’re making like staff aren’t doing their job,” said Os- hawa Trustee Michael Barrett. The framework includes four categories of questions posed as: value to the student; value to the community; value to the board; and, value to the local economy. Student values include the ability of the school to host ex- tracurricular activities and care for the students’ transportation needs. Community values include the school’s historical significance and its availability to be used for community recreational use. Board of education values in- clude whether school enrolment is projected to be sustainable over the next five years, whether the operating cost per pupil is greater than, equal to, or lesser than the board’s average operating cost, and whether the school is in compli- ance with the Ontario Disabilities Act. Local economy values include the schools’ impact on the local economy and whether the school attracts and retains families. Given the delays in getting them put up in the past, however, fur- ther delays are possible, said Ivan Ciuciura, Durham Region’s director of emergency management. The first of four sirens were to be installed this week, he said to the Pickering nuclear Community Advi- sory Council on Tuesday. “I cross my fingers it will get up this week.” The sirens are being installed in Pickering and Clarington, and would be used to alert people to an emergency at the nuclear stations. Fourteen sirens have been in- stalled in Clarington, but opposi- tion to the original number of 27 sirens in Pickering has delayed the project. Residents and City officials protested, saying that was too many for a three-kilometre radius around the plant. A consultant hired by the City found only four were needed to cover the three kilometres. All the sirens have been put up in Clarington, the base for three of the sirens have been installed in Pickering while one location hasn’t been resolved. The alerting system also includes ‘tone alert radios,’ which are being distributed in Clar- ington. The units aren’t being dis- tributed in Pickering until the siren issue is resolved, Mr. Ciuciura said. “Every home and business within three kilometres will get one. The intent is to offer every home and business one. It’s up to them if they want it,” he added. There’s “a low probability an acci- dent will occur that will affect people off-site,” he noted, but the provincial emergency plan requires the sirens. Alerting would have to cover a three-kilometre zone around the plant, and must be able to reach ev- eryone, both indoors and outdoors, in that area within 15 minutes. The current alerting system is an automatic phone dialing for a 10- kilometre radius, Mr. Ciuciura said. However, it’s “too slow,” can’t reach people who are outside and calls could be blocked in a power outage. Part of the public-alerting sys- tem is public education, he said. The slogan Go, Listen, Follow is being used in the education cam- paign, he added. “Go indoors, listen to local radio or TV, follow the direc- tion on what to do.” While the sirens are being erected primarily for a nuclear emergency, he said they could be used for other instances, such as the Mississauga train derailment. A kilogram of cocaine and three assault rifles were among the items seized dur- ing the stop, which occurred when the officer spotted an SUV wanted by cops trav- elling east on Hwy. 2 near Westney Road around 3:30 last Friday afternoon. In addition to the as- sault rifles police recovered three sawed-off shotguns, two rifles, a Glock handgun and an inoperable grenade, along with five tool boxes packed with ammunition. A kilo of cocaine worth an estimated $100,000 and four bottles of GHB, com- monly known as the date rape drug, were found in the vehicle, police said. Of- ficers also seized $10,000 in cash and equipment that led them to believe the sus- pect had plans to set up a drug lab. First produced in New Bruns- wick in 1948 by prolific Canadian playwright Norm Foster, the play recently had an “off Broadway stint in New York,” and tends to make its way into good theatre houses. Savage considers it to be one of Foster’s “top plays,” and describes it as “a real gem.” The story revolves around two brothers, Owen and Lee Melville, who make their way to an uncle’s cabin for a weekend getaway. But, their plans get thrown off track when they arrive to meet two sis- ters already there. “They’re the catalysts for a very funny and incredibly tender look at what happens when these four lives collide,” Savage says. The cast features Geoffrey Coul- ter of Oshawa, who plays Lee. A three-time, award-winning actor, according to Savage he is “an in- credibly seasoned actor” who has appeared in “somewhere between 85 to 90 commercials” and in more than 15 Herongate productions. Martin Kalin of Ajax is Owen. Although he has performed in many theatres, from New York to the Durham Region, this is Kalin’s debut appearance at Herongate. Shari Thorne-Kowalski of Ajax plays Mary. As a triple Thea-nom- inated, award-winning actress, she is “very well known in Dur- ham and regional theatre.” She also played the hugely successful Martha in ‘Who’s Afraid of Vir- ginia Woolf.’ Finally, Laurie Hay of Etobicoke plays Loretta. Though this may only be her second appearance at Herongate, she is actively involved in musical theatre in Toronto and has appeared in performances of ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘The Secret Garden.’ The cast joins forces with the talent and experience of Sav- age, whose writing/directing/ producing career dates back to 1975. From CBC television series to stage productions in Toronto, where he appeared in ‘Jacob Two- Two Meets the Hooded Fang’, Sav- age has co-produced his first 35 mm film ‘Remembrance,’ which won the Claude Jutras for Best Ca- nadian Short and was nominated for a Genie Award. World’s Most Fabulous Object characters ‘kind of autobiographical’ Short film a part of 2008 Sprockets International Film Festival for Children By Moya Dillon mdillon@durhamregion.com DURHAM — In the short film ‘The World’s Most Fabulous Ob- ject’, two childhood friends who became romantically involved, embark on a road trip to sal- vage their friendship after a bad breakup. Relationship troubles are something director Bruce Harp- er, born in Oshawa, and his writ- ing partner, Ian Malone, know about first hand. “Parts of the relationship and definitely just the motivations of the characters were kind of au- tobiographical,” Mr. Harper says of the film. “I had gone through a big breakup before film school and my writing partner had just broken up with his long-term, high school girlfriend. So we got to work all that out in the movie.” The film and its tale of friend- ship have already enchanted au- diences at the Anchorage Film Festival and the Toronto Student Shorts Festival, where it was awarded People’s Choice award. Next up, the film will be included in The Future Frames program of the 2008 Sprockets International Film Festival for Children, held April 12-18 in Toronto. The Future Frames program was created to showcase upcom- ing talent from post-secondary schools across Canada, some- thing Mr. Harper, who shot the film as part of his third-year courses at Sheridan College, has some advice about. “All those big filmmakers who never went to film school, I thought I could do that,” he said. “I didn’t go to film school to be taught, I went to meet like-mind- ed people and people who work in the business. In that sense, I would highly recommend film school. But don’t expect them to teach you, you have to teach yourself. Basically you show up at film school and they have every- thing you need to make a movie, so make some movies.” For now Mr. Harper is working on developing new ideas with his production partner, Sarah Bowles, and says he would like to try out many different genres. “I’m not sure what genre I should do next but I definitely want to try out everything,” he says. “I’ll just paddle around in the world of movies and figure out ‘I would highly recommend film school. In his second year of film school, Mr. Harper used the Second World War as a backdrop for another short film, ‘A Lucky Strike’, which focused on a soldier in a slit trench along the Holland-Ger- man border in the dead of winter. He desperately needs a cigarette. Mr. Harper said the filming of ‘A Lucky Strike’ was a great learning experience and really informed his later experience filming ‘The World’s Most Fabulous Object’. As for the success of Object, which swept Sheridan’s school media awards, Mr. Harper says he’s been surprised at how much the acclaim has affected him. “It’s cool, it’s really fulfilling,” he says. “I gotta tell you it feels so good when people clap at the end of your movie or laugh at the funny parts. And people clap at the end of every movie at a film festival by default so it shouldn’t matter, but it does anyway. [ Track and field ] Pine Ridge’s Gill sets school marks PICKERING — Athletes from the Pine Ridge Secondary School track team competed in the Nike/Adams Invitational Indoor Track Meet at York University on Thursday, March 20 to kick off the start of the track season. Team captain Kyle Gill placed third in the senior boys’ 60 metres in 7.02 seconds, establishing a new school record. Gill also placed fourth in the senior boys’ 200 metres with a time of 22.90 seconds -- also a new school record. Michael Kostka Ajax Aquatic Club sends large contingent to Olympic trials Eight swimmers in Montreal next week for a chance to make Canadian team By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com AJAX — Ajax Aquatic Club head coach Matt Bell, preparing to go on the pool deck to begin a recent prac- tice at the Ajax Community Centre, is happy to spend some time to dis- cuss his senior swimmers as they head into the biggest meet of the season. The young coach has the luxury of both the quality and quantity of swimmers competing at the upcom- ing Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials in Montreal next month. The club boasts eight athletes — Nick Ducille, 18, Aidan Zoell- ner-Dougan, 19, Greg Laughlin, 18, Julian Monks, 17, Michelle Fleming, 15, Alex Andrechuk, 16, Christine Raininger, 17, and Devin Ste. Marie, 14 — at the Olympic Pool in Mon- treal from April 1 to 6, the highest total ever in recent memory, says Bell. “As far as I know... to have eight going is the largest we’ve had,” says Bell, adding all eight are appearing in their first Olympic trials. “We’re one of the biggest groups from a small club.” The AAC boasts an especially strong male contingent heading to trials, with freestyler Ducille, backstroke and freestyle specialist Zoellner-Dougan, and all-rounders Laughlin and Monks all possessing a wealth of experience at high-pro- file meets. “They’ve all got more experience at the national level and they’ve also competed at the Bell Grand Prix international meet and also been in the Western and Eastern Canadian championships and won medals. They all know what to ex- pect and they expect to be in front.” All four, says Bell, have the po- tential to advance to the ‘A’ finals of their individual events. And, if that’s the case, they have a chance to make the Canadian swimming team going to Beijing, although he acknowledges qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in London, England may be the more likely scenario. “We’re looking for a few athletes in the finals and, if we’re lucky, some will get into the ‘A’ final,” pre- dicts Bell. Sprint freestyler and Ajax resi- dent Ducille is one of those swim- mers hoping to be on the starting blocks in an ‘A’ final in Montreal. “I want to make finals. I expect to swim faster than I ever have and, hopefully, that will lead to an ap- pearance in the finals,” says Ducille, a dual citizen who may have the opportunity to qualify for the Ja- maican Olympic swim team. Zoellner-Dougan, a late bloomer in the AAC, having started com- petitive swimming at age 13, has an Olympic dream in his sights and is hopeful next week’s trials will yield an Olympic qualifying time in his specialty, the 100m backstroke. “It’s a big meet and I’m excited for it. I hope to do well. I want to make an ‘A’ final in my best event,” says the Ajax resident and Pickering High School graduate. Meanwhile, for the club’s four female swimmers, the trials offer an opportunity to gain more experi- ence on the national stage. Andre- chuk will compete in breaststroke and individual medley events, Ste. Marie in the freestyle and butterfly events, Raininger in the IM, free- style and fly events and Fleming in the breaststroke and freestyle events. “It’s a good yardstick for what they need to accomplish to get to the next level,” says Bell. “The men are more experienced and they’re going to lead the way, but we’re looking for the women to have a breakthrough meet and rise to the occasion.” Ste. Marie, the youngest AAC swimmer at the trials, notes it’s all about gaining the valuable experi- ence of competing against Canada’s best. “I think just having a best time at that meet would be good,” she says. Andrechuk, an Ajax High School student, also hopes to perform best times in her two breaststroke events, the 100-metre and 200m, at the trials. Raininger also hopes to make waves in Montreal. “I’m confident and ready for success,” says the Pickering High School student. The Cougars, which compete in the Ontario Youth Soccer League dur- ing the summer season, continued their fine play at the 2008 Ontario Indoor Cup Tournament, which featured 16 teams from across Ontario. In the final, the Cou- gars downed the Bramp- ton East Snipers 4-1 to re- peat as provincial champs. Brampton entered the final as the No. 2-ranked team in the province for the U14 age group. In their biggest test to date, the Cougars scored two quick goals to set the tone. They added another to lead 3-0 at half time. Pickering added one more goal before Bramp- ton replied with just more than a minute remaining to spoil the shutout. The PSC Cougars ad- vanced to the final after a relatively easy 5-1 win over the Mississauga Dixie Lions in the semifinal contest. The Mississauga squad entered the contest ranked No. 3 in the Terra Power Rankings last year. The Cougars led 2-1 at half time and then scored two quick goals to start the final half and never looked back. In round-robin action at the final tournament, the PSC Cougars won two of their three games. The Cougars dropped a 2-0 decision to the Brampton East End Snipers to begin tournament play. Unfortu- nately, the Cougars were never able to get going in this one. The Cougars did, how- ever, bounce back to thor- oughly outclass the Lon- don Lightning 7-1 in Game 2. In their final round-robin game, the Cougars started slowly, but came on in the second half to ground the Mississauga Falcons 5-0.
