Durham Region expected to stand by contract offer made July 14; proposed agreement was ‘fair and reasonable:’ Johns By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham Region Tran- sit (DRT) workers represented by the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union have voted in favour of a strike man- date. After a summer-long stalemate, DRT workers and management are back at the bargaining table. But, according to John Johnson, CAW’s DRT unit chairman, workers are ready to take action if required. On Sept. 10, the CAW Local 222 members voted 92 per cent in favour of giving their bargaining committee a strike mandate. According to Mr. Johnson, there were about 185 workers present at the vote. “(The strike mandate) shows man- agement our whole membership is behind us and they are willing to go out on strike if they have to, to get a fair and equitable collective agree- ment,” he said. “We still want to bargain without going on strike but, at the end of the day, we are willing to go that way if we have to.” Negotiations between DRT and CAW, representing 290 DRT staff, to hammer out a collective agreement for most DRT workers began May 23. Both parties came to the bargaining table with extensive proposals after local transit systems merged to create DRT Jan. 1. DRT presented what it called the Region’s final offer on July 14 and talks hit a standstill. Since July, Garth Johns, the Region’s commissioner of human resources, said it has been a bit of a waiting game but the offer, which was presented in July, was a good one and the Region expects to stick by it. “The proposed agreement, we think, certainly was more than fair and reasonable,” Mr. Johns said. “We appreciate that the member- ship has to be properly dealt with, but at the same time we can’t blow the lid off the tax dollars.” Dates when talks will occur are Sept. 12, 26 and Oct. 3 and 4. Both sides said they hope to reach a negotiated settlement. The sixth annual Greenwood Village Festival takes place Sept. 16 with something for everyone including pony rides, a bake sale, and a beer garden. Things get under way at noon with the bicycle parade for the kids. It forms in the parking lot of Greenwood United Church, located on the Sixth Concession Road, and those interested in participating need to be there by 11:45 a.m. The afternoon is full of things to do or see including an ob- stacle course, miniature pony for petting or riding for those under 50 pounds, a reptile show, a bake sale, craft vendors, and a clown. “It just gets bigger and better every year,” said Nicole Hale, one of the organizers with the Green- wood Recreation Association. The GRA runs several pro- grams out of the Greenwood Community Centre, including ones for youth, pre-schoolers and families. The festival is its biggest fundraiser of the year with the funds going towards those programs. No festival would be complete without some good food and this one features a bake sale, various vendors and a gourmet barbe- cue dinner in the evening. The afternoon activities run from noon to 5 p.m. and then the dinner runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m. In the evening there will be live entertainment and a live auction featuring a chef to take home for your next dinner party, gold Toronto Maple Leaf tickets, a day sailing package and much more. Ms. Hale said the core com- mittee of 10 volunteers begins planning in January or February and the weeks leading up to the event are crazy. During the fes- tival 70-75 volunteers from the community pitch in to help for an hour or more to make sure the event is a success. The festival takes place at the Greenwood Community Centre, located at 3551 Greenwood Rd., west of Westney Road, and at Greenwood Park adjacent to the community centre. It takes place rain or shine. GO transit is adding 70 daily bus trips along Hwy. 407. The move will help students and staff get more easily to Durham Col- lege and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, as well as to York and McMaster universities. The announcement was made by Minister of Transportation Donna Cansfield and GO chairman Peter Smith on Sept. 1. “GO Transit riders have come to expect service that meets their needs,” said Ms. Cansfield. “We’re adding more bus service along Hwy. 407 so that the more than two million riders that travel this route each year reach their destina- tions more conveniently.” Mr. Smith said it’s their goal to continue adding more services where and when possible. To address increased demand from Stouffville and Markham, GO Transit will introduce a new early morning train leaving the Stouffville Station at 5:25 a.m. to Union Station. The new train can carry about 1,000 passengers and will replace two buses currently used. GO will also provide more frequent train service to Exhibition Station. Durham post-secondary numbers on the rise College, university enrolment continues to climb By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — More students are choosing Durham as the place to be for post-secondary education, show this year’s enrolment numbers. While Durham College is experi- encing a two per cent enrolment in- crease, the University of Ontario Insti- tute of Technology (UOIT) has 1,700 new students this September, increas- ing its population to more than 4,300. “They are higher than our projec- tions, we projected conservatively,” said UOIT president Ronald Bord- essa. He said the numbers exceed estimates by 100. “Our growth compared to the rest of system, our enrolment from high school is 7.5 per cent, the system av- erage growth is 3.2 per cent,” said Dr. Bordessa. “In system-wide competi- tion, we have done twice as well as the average.” Included in UOIT’s increased en- rolment is 100 students who have transferred from other universities. Dr. Bordessa speculates it’s because of the particular programs UOIT of- fers. “Tremendous confidence with what we’re doing... (students) know we’re delivering what they want and what employers want,” said Dr. Bordessa. About 40 per cent of UOIT’s stu- dents come from Durham and Nor- thumberland, but this year, 11 per cent come from Scarborough and five per cent from Mississauga, bypassing closer universities. “They’ve made the choice to come right across the GTA and to UOIT,” said Dr. Bordessa. This is the first year the school has had students in all four years of pro- grams offered. Next year, UOIT will be expanding the enrolment in some ex- isting programs and introducing more research-orientated and professional development graduate programs. But space constraints at the school could impact its growth capabilities, as more physical space is needed to accommodate enrolment growth, said Dr. Bordessa. He added UOIT is in- volved with internal discussions and talking to the City of Oshawa about how to bring them closer together in a mutually beneficial way, which could include space opportunities. Durham College welcomed almost 5,900 students to school this Septem- ber, which included more than 3,400 entering their first year. Bev Balenko, Durham College’s vice-president of academics, said for first year students, the school has had a three per cent increase. Durham College brought in a num- ber of programs this year, which have helped increase its enrolment, she said. It has also experienced big in- creases in its journalism program by adding a third year print/broadcast option. Projections estimate enrol- ment will be at 6,200 by April, she said. “I think we’re going to be right on,” said Ms. Balenko. She said she doesn’t have the data yet on how the provincial system is doing for college enrolment, but is pretty sure Durham College is going to be in the top third. Just one more way to get your news thanks to the NEWS A DVERTISER newsdurhamregion.com PA GE A6 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ SEPTEMBER 13, 2006P W hen you make your home in a small town there is a cer- tain “shorthand” for living that one soon catches onto. For instance, although I’ve been a resident of this lovely little hamlet for close to 15 years I really couldn’t tell you, offhand, the names of any streets outside a block of my own home. I doubt any of my neigh- bors could either. We’ve never learned them because we don’t have to. Nobody re- ally uses them. Frankly I don’t know why the municipality even bothers to put up street signs. For instance, I don’t live at 32 Bodrington, I live in the old Pendergrast place, kitty corner to the Legion, right near where Arch Lum- ley got run over by the Santa Claus float. Much more help- ful, don’t you think, than 32 Bodrington? Certainly more colourful. Likewise, there is a cen- turies-old method of giving directions in small towns. If you want to tell someone how to get to the diner, you don’t blather on with a bunch of north and souths, and avenue this or street that. Instead, you say “Get yerself to the main drag and follow Percy.” Everybody knows Percy pretty much lives at the diner. Follow him for a few min- utes and he’ll take you right there. He may swing you past the hardware store and Co- op first, but eventually, sure as shootin’, you’ll get to the diner. Anyway, who couldn’t use a stop at the Hardware store or the Co-op? Names too, in a small town, have their own unique con- ventions. You can’t just start in a conversation with some- thing like “I heard the Snod- don boy’s been at it again.” Lord no. Do that and you’re apt to start a feud that’d make the Hatfield/McCoy’s look like a square dance. Anybody with a brain knows that there are more Snod- dons in town than there are pickup trucks. Which one are you talking about? Same thing with Brethours and Purvis’s and Teefy’s. And don’t even get me started on the Dobles. This is what you get in a small town. Families that have been around for hundreds of years. They are proud, upright, hard- working, pioneering stock and if you want them to help you slander somebody, you have to be more particular. Narrow it down. Walk your listeners in, step by step, until they know exactly who you’re gossiping about. Try this: “I heard that Snod- don boy, the one lives over to the Bagshaw place, kid with the wonky eye, old man has the gout so bad he rides a lawn tractor all over hell and gone, dead dog on the front lawn been there for a month of Sundays, the brother put a sled through the ice three year ago... and the girl’s an awful size... I heard he’s at it again.” Now, instead of the evil eye, you’ll get a table full of nodding baseball caps. Ev- erybody knows that kid. Reality television has been the buzz for some years now, shows that also include Fear Factor, Survivor and Rock Star, to name a few others. Although these participants are talented and deserve at- tention, the REALITY is that they do not compare to what Terry Fox has accomplished and meant to all Canadians and those internationally. Terry’s legacy is one of hope, endless possibili- ties, human decency and, most of all, generosity. REALITY: according to the most recent statistics, 59 per cent of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive compared to 20 per cent in the 1940s. REALITY: childhood can- cer deaths rates have dropped more than 50 per cent since the 1950s. REALITY: as Terry stated on July 29, 1980, “Maybe that’s why I’ve made it as far as I have- 2,521 miles (4,057 kilometres). If I ran to a doctor every time I got a little cyst or abrasion I’d still be in Nova Scotia. Or else I’d never have started. I’ve seen people in so much pain. The lit- tle bit of pain I’m going through is nothing. They can’t shut it off, and I can’t shut down every time I feel a little sore.” I urge you all to join us on Sunday, Sept. 17 to participate in the 26 Annual Terry Fox Run. Registration commences at 8:30 a.m. at the Pickering Rec- reation Complex with opening ceremonies and the run begin- ning at 9 a.m. Please help us continue Terry’s Marathon of Hope so one day all forms of cancer are history. Kevin Cahill Pickering More objectivity called for in new waste regimen To the editor: Re: ‘Where the stuff in the Green Bin goes’, Aug. 30 News Advertiser. Erin Hatfield’s story in yester- day’s edition sounds as though she is a staff writer for Miller Waste Management, rather than the News Advertiser. But then that’s consistent with the News Advertiser’s position on the waste issue. Rather than looking at the new system objectively, acknowledg- ing its good points and exposing its weaknesses, you have ad- opted the role of cheerleader for a contract that appears to have been written for Miller without regard for the taxpayer or, really, for the environment. To be sure, the food waste composting is an excellent step forward. But you have been silent on Miller’s demand that the public use more expensive bags than those used in the pilots. You have been silent on Miller’s remarkably short list of what plastics can be recycled. Many jurisdictions all over Canada and the U.S. are doing far more, but a brand new Miller plant can’t cope, we are told. Instead, you label critics as whiners and rant- ers. The News Advertiser appears to have abrogated its role as a public watchdog, and seems to support local government and politicians whatever they may do (witness your unbridled sup- port of Roger Anderson). In so doing, you have relin- quished all credibility as a news- paper. Thank heaven for the ads. Total Votes: 470 No: 56.8% Yes: 43.2% Terry Fox made Canada better place L egacy is not confined to this country, but worldwide in its scope F or millions of Canadians, the third Sunday in September has become a key date on the calendar. It’s looked upon as a perfect late-summer day to get out, commune with nature and do yourself and the world around you some good. That third Sunday in September, of course, marks the annual Te rry Fox Run, a tradition since 1981. Over the last quarter of a century hundreds of millions of dol- lars have been raised for cancer research by the many thousands who have laced them up for Terry. The run incorporates varying distances and speeds and all are encouraged to join in. It’s worth noting in this rapid-fire world in which we live, that it was a young man’s brave dream and sacrifice back in 1980 that has proved such a massive inspiration across the globe and has been so long-lasting with no sign of going into decline. Just 20 when he began the Marathon of Hope in April 1980, the British Columbia native amazed the country with his famil- iar gait and his struggle, despite losing most of one leg to bone cancer, to run a marathon a day in his quest to cross Canada. Along the way Terry hoped to raise awareness for cancer re- search in his Marathon of Hope. His goal was to raise about a dollar per person, around $20 million at that time. While illness struck him down near Thunder Bay and prevent- ed him from completing his goal in 1980 -- he would die in 1981 from the disease -- his influence only grew after his passing. So many were moved by what Terry had done -- Steve Fonyo successfully completed a cross-Canada run a few years later and wheelchair athlete Rick Hansen crossed the globe 20 years ago -- that his legacy has lived on. Canadians and many others have gladly taken up Terry’s torch and have raised more money than the young man could ever have dreamed of for cancer research. And Terry has justifiably become a Canadian and interna- tional hero, a symbol of heart, guts and determination and an inspiration to all who have felt his spirit down through the years. Te rry’s goal was to help others and it lives and breathes on in all of us. 905.420.2222 cityofpickering.com 24 Hour Access 905.420.4660 Register NOW for Fall Childrens, Teens, Adults & Older Adult Programs 905.420.4621 ATTEND PUBLIC MEETINGS AT CITY HALL All meetings are open to the public. PICKE R I N G TEENBA N D S WA NTED PA GE A7 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ September 13, 2006 P Roger Anderson ends term as AMO president By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — Roger Anderson says his commitment to Durham Region is unwavering. When the Regional Chairman looks back at his term as president of the Association of Municipalities of On- tario, he said he hopes it was all for the betterment of Durham and the entire province. “A nything I can do as a member of AMO or as chairman of Durham Re- gion that improves the quality of life and means more disposable income for residents of Durham or Ontario is a good thing,” Mr. Anderson said. “I am pretty pleased how we managed that over the past two years and I am pretty pleased with how it looks for the future.” Mr. Anderson finished his term as AMO president on Aug. 16 at the or- ganization’s annual conference in Ot- tawa. He joined AMO in 1989 and spent just less than a decade on its execu- tive before being elected president. The two-year term, which he began in 2004, after losing the race for the seat in 2002, was a goal Mr. Anderson had held for some time. “I always (thought) I could do a good job representing AMO,” he said. Belief in AMO’s mission is what drove Mr. Anderson during his presidency. “Not all 405 municipalities can speak to the Province at once,” he said. “ And it is fair to say the Province can’t speak to all 405 municipalities at once either.” AMO is the collective voice of On- tario’s municipalities, speaking with a united voice after consultation with members and the board. It puts for- ward policy positions that reflect the large majority of municipalities in On- tario whether they be large, small, rural or urban. “Basically the issues are all the same. The difference between one municipal- ity and another is most definitely de- fined by the number of zeros in front of the decimal point,” Mr. Anderson said. “The problems in the City of Ottawa are no different then the problems in the City of Kenora.” The services provided by the mu- nicipal sector are the same and Mr. Anderson said there’s enough consen- sus across the board about what the important issues are. Issues like land ambulances, the municipal act, gas tax, the shortage of justices of the peace and social services affect the entire province. “We have had quite a success in changing some of the legislation,” Mr. Anderson said. “We don’t win every battle but we certainly win the majority of the battles, I would suggest.” Reflecting on his term, Mr. Anderson said he is pretty happy with the way everything turned out. He also looks forward to the next two years when he will serve as past president. “If you add up all the wins, the last two years have been a great two years,” Mr. Anderson said. Among the list of accomplishments AMO had during Mr. Anderson’s presi- dency are the gas tax agreement, which secured approximately $1.9 billion in federal gas tax revenue for Ontario mu- nicipalities over five years. Also, the signing of the memorandum of under- standing, the land ambulance fund- ing, which saw the Province commit to funding the service 50/50 with munici- palities, and finally the new municipal act and the review on the fiscal imbal- ance. A low point? Mr. Anderson said the biggest disappointment was Bill 206, the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) legisla- tion. “The OMERS legislation, we know for a fact that it will end up costing municipalities an awful lot of money down the road,” Mr. Anderson said. “To change it the way they did, we didn’t feel was appropriate.” Mr. Anderson said successes like these are signs that AMO’s mission is being accomplished. “There’s a respectful relationship which has been formed between mu- nicipal government and the provincial government and that relationship is important,” he said. “Governments have to realize that municipal govern- ments are a mature order of govern- ment. They are not the children of the province of Ontario any more. They have grown up.” TRAINING FOR THE REAL WORLD YOU WILLYOU WILL LEARN TO:LEARN TO: DISCOUNT FOR EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION! But Beata Golas said the Region will have to wait to see how the proposed legis- lation pans out to determine its impact on Durham. The financial assistance program would initially invest $7 million to support farmers and small rural businesses for activities that reduce threats to drinking water and to keep water sources free of contamination. “Over all I see it as a posi- tive thing,” said Ms. Golas, a Region of Durham hydro- geologist. “Even though we had concerns with it in the beginning.” She said it appears as though the Province has taken some of its concerns into consideration with the proposed amendment. “We have some problems with resources,” Ms. Golas said. “But it is a great idea to protect and find (problems in the water). But our prob- lem is with implementation.” If the amended bill is passed, the program would include $5 million to support early action to protect land and water surrounding water wells and close to municipal water intakes, and $2 mil- lion to support local educa- tion and outreach related to source-protection planning. Province proposes changes to Clean Water Act Regional campaign takes aim at students DURHAM — The Region’s health department has launched a new campaign to promote safe sex among college students. The Always Use a Con- dom campaign kicked off Sept. 9 at Durham College and the University of Ontar- io Institute of Technology’s Campus Fest. The aim is to raise awareness about sexu- ally transmitted diseases and promote condom use. Regional staff handed out about 1,000 envelopes bearing the campaign logo, What’s in their pants, and filled with safe sex parapher- nalia, including a condom, personal lubricant, a pam- phlet on sexually transmit- ted infections, magnets and information about Durham Region’s sexual health clin- ics. To learn more about the campaign, call Durham’s health connection line at 905-666-6241 or 1-800-841- 2729, or visit www.region. durham.on.ca. durhamregion.com Just one more way to get your news thanks to the Metroland Durham Region Media Group SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com INSIDE A Pickering golfer was golden on the Golf Town Tour stop in Lakefield last weekend. Page B2 Panthers buoyed by U.S. success Pickering juniors post 2-1 record in Vermont, home opener Sunday By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — The Pickering Pan- thers’ strong showing at an U.S. tourna- ment last weekend will hopefully erase a mediocre exhibition season and, more importantly, translate into a fast start to the league campaign. The Panthers opened the 2006-07 Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League season against the Oshawa- based Durham Fury (formerly the Le- gionaires) at the Durham College Cam- pus Arena on Tuesday night, with the result unavailable at press time. The Pickering juniors are in Toronto Friday to play the St. Michael’s Buzz- ers. The Panthers’ home opener is against the Markham Waxers at the Pickering Recre- ation Complex Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The Wax- ers put Pickering out in the mini- mum four games in last season’s South Confer- ence semifinal playoffs. The Panthers finished pre- season preparation by competing at the second annual Woodchuck Classic in Burlington, Vermont last weekend. Playing against a trio of American junior squads in their division, the Panthers more than held their own. Pickering managed a 2-1 record, posting wins over the Vermont-based Green Moun- tain Glades (3-2) and the Syracuse Stars (2-1). The Panthers’ lone loss was to the Boston Junior Bruins, 5-2. The top American competition, not to mention the large number of col- lege scouts in attendance, made the 14-team tourney a worthwhile endea- vour, notes Panthers’ head coach John Winder. “We were really happy with the weekend because of the competition,” says Winder. “Going down last year and playing one team was not too beneficial. This year, the NCAA scouts were there and they’ll see (our players) again at the College Weekend (now the Governor’s Showcase, in Bowman- ville). (The scouts) see a lot of the EJHL (Eastern Junior Hockey League) teams, so they wanted to see how they’d do against Ontario junior teams. I thought we did well, all our games were close.” Of the individual performances there, Winder was impressed with the poise and focus of Ajax-Pickering Raid- ers midget graduates Brendan Hann and Mike McFarlane, along with fellow rookies Dan Mandel and Chris Dun- ham, who attended the Ontario Hockey League Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds training camp. “Those four have been a force for us so far. They all looked good up in Ver- mont,” he says. On the blue line, Winder also gave props to rookies Chris Gour, Spencer Brennan and Jesse Hebscher for their solid play at the Vermont showcase. The goaltending situation, which was the Panthers’ biggest question mark entering camp, has turned around con- siderably with the arrival of veteran Marc Stuart in a deal with the Oakville Blades for future considerations. Stuart and rookie Connor Sampson shared the workload in Vermont, but Stuart is expected to see the bulk of the games during the regular season. “Right now, because of Marc’s expe- rience, he’s going to be the main guy and we’ll bring Connor along slowly,” says Winder. The Pan- thers entered the Woodchuck Classic with a less-than-stel- lar 1-3-1 mark in exhibition play, with the lone win coming against the U.S.-based Capital District (CD) Selects of Troy, New York in Pickering last Thursday. But, Winder says the exhibition season is all about giving rookies a long look and introduc- ing several veterans into each game. “We had the same (pre-season) re- cord as we did last year. The exhibi- tion season is just that. Every game we played some of the kids and rotated players through the lineup. We give everybody equal ice time, which is not the case during the regular season. It gave us a chance to see how everyone played in different situations.” The veteran presence in the Pan- thers’ lineup got larger following the weekend with the arrival of two players from last year back in the Panther fold. Ve teran winger Brett Connolly returned after a tryout stint with the OHL’s Sarnia Sting and rugged forward Cory Battista is back after a tryout with the St. John Fog Devils of the Quebec major junior league. The return of Connolly and Battista complicates things slightly for the Pan- thers, who will be carrying 14 forwards and seven defencemen to start the sea- son. “We’re overstocked right now, so we’ll probably make some moves,” says Winder. “It’s a good problem to have but, it’s nevertheless a problem. We don’t like to sit players in the stands. We like to develop players.” Jason Liebregts/News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Pickering Panthers’ forwards Nate Boullion, left, and Brad Fleishman, right, battle for position in front of the net with Capital District (CD) Selects’ defenceman Steve Rizer. The Red Sox were one of 32 teams vying for the title this year. The event used a single-knockout format, meaning win or go home. In all, the Pickering pee- wees chalked up five victories to capture the Pat Martin trophy as tournament champions. In the final, both the Pickering Red Sox and the Burlington Bulls entered the contest undefeated. The Sox came out strong from the opening pitch en route to a decisive 12-3 victory. The Sox drew a strong Scarborough Stingers squad in the semifinals, with Pickering eking out a 6-4 victory to ad- vance to the championship game. In the quarter-finals against the Markham Mariners, the Sox responded with a 10-5 victory. Pickering started the tournament in winning fashion beating the Peterbor- ough Tigers 12–8. The Red Sox-Tigers match was the opening day ceremo- nial game, where CNE president David Bedar, Lions Club Governor Paul Baker, CNE Peewee Baseball Chairman Bill McBratney, and tournament organizer Mar vin Pearl all spoke of the past 50 years. In Game 2, the Red Sox peewees faced a tough Newmarket Hawks team, pre- vailing 6-4. The Sox were also tapped for a num- ber of individual awards. Russell McGib- bon was the Hank Sinclair award winner as tournament MVP, Ryan Logan won the Bill McBratney final game MVP, and Jalen Rhone earned the Sam Shefsky To urnament as the Top Pitcher. [ Hockey ] Panthers’ midgets are early birds PICKERING — The Pickering Pan- thers Brantel minor midget ‘A’ rep hockey team started the season off on a high note going 4-0 and capturing the championship of the West Mall Lightning Early Bird Tour- nament. The Panthers won the final game in a hard-fought battle against the host West Mall squad. The officials were enforcing the new rules in this game by the book, calling 54 penalties, mostly for interfer- ence and stick infractions. The Panthers opened the scoring early in the first pe- riod with a pretty goal by Adam Macneil from Jaymee Young and Cameron Farrell. The scored stayed 1-0 until the dying seconds of the second period when the Lightning tied it up. Lots of penalties and a scoreless third period had the game tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation time, forc- ing the championship to overtime. Forty seconds into overtime, Farrell scored unassisted to give the Panthers the cham- pionship crown. The Panthers started the tournament off strongly, demolishing Clarkson 11-1 with the forward line of Young, Macneil and Erich Sora racking up 16 points -- Young scored five goals, with Macneil netting two and Sora adding one. Farrell also potted two goals and Brendan Fox finished the scoring. Tyler Kotsoupoulos was called on a questionable call for a hit from behind on his second shift of the game, which saw him then sit out the first two games of the tournament. In Game 2, the Panthers topped a determined Erindale team 2-0. The contest was scoreless through the first period, then Farrell opened the scoring from Young. In the third, JP Gianpaolo scored an insurance marker from Macneil. The Pickering midgets faced Lorne Park in the final round-robin contest, with the winner advancing to the championship game. In a pitched battle, the Panthers survived a scare to post a 4-2 victory. Young scored two first-period goals, with assists to Macneil and Farrell. Lorne Park, however, would not go away and scored near the end of the opening frame to make it a close 2 -1 game. After a score- less second period, Pickering’s Dylan Murray scored from Macneil and Young early in the third for a 3-1 lead. But, Lorne Park came back and scored less than a minute later to cut the deficit to one goal. With two minutes left in the game, Murray sealed the win with a goal, assisted by Fox and Jake McNorton, to ensure a trip to the championship game. Defencemen Matt Morgado, Trevor Cozier, Mark Sterling, Darly Probert, Joel Chisholm and Scott Cole played tough defence all weekend, especially with the enforcement of the news rules, as the Panthers allowed only four goals against through the entire tournament. The goaltending tandem of Derek Redmond and Michael Bowden stood on their heads at times keeping the puck out of the Panthers’ net. Redmond made a great stop on a penalty shot in the first game and Bowden was superb in racking up a shutout in Game 2 against Erindale. [ Golf ] Pickering man tops Golf Town tour event PICKERING — It was better late than never for a Pickering golfer who captured his first win of the season on the Golf Town Tour at The Kawartha Classic held at Wild- fire Golf Club in Lakefield last weekend. The tournament was the 13th of 14 events in Southern Ontario this season. Playing in only his second event of the year, Chris Kertsos of Pickering (York Downs Golf and Country Club) won the Championship Flight with a 1-over-par 73, three strokes ahead of Dan Bates of Mis- sissauga (Credit Valley Golf and Country Club). Paul Black of Unionville (Highland Gate Golf Club) finished third at 77. Ker tsos took home Longest Drive honours for championship ‘A’ flight. He also won the Closest to the Pin competi- tion. Matt Pegg of Ajax, a member of the Royal Ashburn Golf Club, finished in a 13th- place tie in the championship flight with an 87 score. Meanwhile, in the ‘A’ flight, Michael Luu of Pickering shot an 84 to finish in a fourth- place tie. TWO GREAT RESTAURANTS! 1999$ ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT entertainmentdurhamregion.com Producer uses story of four friends to step into director’s chair By Mike Ruta Staff Editor PICKERING — Life, love and loss are all part of the conversation as four friends play a round of golf on the Herongate Barn Theatre stage. ‘The Foursome’, by noted Canadian play- wright Norm Foster, opens Friday and is also a debut for director Steve Graham. Mr. Graham, who co-owns the theatre with his wife, Ann Wa rd, is no stranger to producing a play, but makes his directorial debut. “I’ve been producing all the plays here for the last 17 years, so directing was not a difficult thing for me to step into,” he says. “It’s given me a lot of appreciation for what my wife... has to deal with,” he adds. “She has terrific people skills, so she makes it look easy.” It helps to work with four experienced actors. Playing the golf foursome are Daryl Marks of Pickering, Michael Savage of Whitby, Oshawa’s Ray Porril and Chris Cole of Scarborough. The premise of ‘The Foursome’ is four, 30- something guys getting together for a reunion 15 years after they’ve graduated from univer- sity. They decide to play a round of golf the next day, opting for a best-ball format since one of the men has never golfed before. “They talk about their lives and loves,” Gra- ham says. “There’s some funny stuff and really poignant parts as well. The action takes place on the tees.” The characters recount what happened on the last hole as they’re about to tee off at the next one. Graham got creative in developing what could be a challenging set for the play. He obtained some golf course sponsors and then went out and shot photos at the courses, to be used as rear screen images behind the actors. “Every hole will be represented by a different hole from a golf course in the area,” he notes. Graham stresses that “you don’t have to be a golfer” to enjoy the play. ‘The Foursome’ runs Sept. 15 to Oct. 28, with matinee dates to be announced.
