Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) is currently re-examin- ing its service delivery at its sites in Ajax and Scarborough, said Maria Milanetti, vice-president of communications. But concerns the Ajax hospital will close or lose vital services like emergency or obstetrics are un- founded, she said. A report presented made to the hospital board last month is only ‘extreme brainstorming’, said Ms. Milanetti, even though it discusses moving urgent inpa- tient care, pediatrics and obstet- rics from Ajax to Centenary hos- pital, and making the Ajax site an elective and day surgery site. “This is just our first musings. Wayne Arthurs, the only Liberal elected in Durham Region when Dalton McGuinty’s team swept Ontario three weeks ago, said it was “a bit of a cul- ture shock” to be at Queen’s Park. Premier McGuinty ap- pointed the former Picker- ing mayor parliamentary assistant to management board of cabinet chairman Gerry Phillips. Mr. Arthurs says he is not at all disappointed that he wasn’t given a cab- inet post. “All along I said I was seeking office as an MPP, not seeking office as a cab- inet minister,” he says. He explains that the management board secre- tariat carries the “huge re- sponsibility” of all the province’s human and physical assets. “I’m very, very pleased,” Mr. Arthurs says. “I could- n’t ask for a better role to play in terms of my experi- ence.” Mr. Arthurs says he’s also happy to be working for a great tutor in Mr. Phillips, a 16-year veteran of provincial politics and a former citizenship and labour minister. Job one for the new MPP involves “probably a lot of reading” and gener- ally beginning his learning curve. Mr. Arthurs says he’s anxious to sit down with and get to know the management board staff, joking that finding his of- f ice would be a good place to start. “I’m looking forward to the opportunities and was really happy to be at the swearing in of the Pre- mier,” he says. “There cer- tainly will be a lot of chal- lenges, but there’s a lot of optimism.” In the short term at least, Mr. Arthurs says his constituency office will continue to be that of for- mer MPP Janet Ecker, whom he defeated in the Oct. 2 election. The News Advertiser This Week The Canadian Statesman Uxbridge Times-Journal Metroland Durham Region Media Group At Monday's public school board meeting, Scugog Trustee Martin Demmers noted that some (at least five) of the current trustees would not be back for another term. "Do you think it might be a good idea if we all go out to dinner?" he asked his colleagues. "A re you paying?" replied Whitby Trustee Elizabeth Roy. "No. We would all pay for our- selves," Trustee Demmers an- swered. There were no takers. I pictured the 11 trustees, after dinner, trying to figure out who owes what, digressing into a discus- sion on money itself. Some would ask the server if they could instead offer something in trade. The term is almost done, and in a nutshell, things could have run a lot more smoothly. The recent debate over Whitby Trustee Doug Ross's motion says a lot about what it was like. He says trustees are taking ad- vantage of the Education Act, which states if you miss three straight board meetings you're fired. The thing is, the Durham board has just as many standing committee meetings. That means a trustee could come to one meeting every three months, while missing five, and keep his or her job. Trustee Ross wants the Province to turf trustees if they miss three reg ularly scheduled meetings in a row or 25 per cent in a year (not in- cluding a lengthy illness or other unique circumstances). Easy, right? Wrong. It did pass, but here were some of the argu- ments against the motion at the last two meetings. Ajax Wards 3 and 4 Trustee Melinda Crawford: Trustee Ross is playing politics. Let's see what other boards think. "I'm not supporting this because trustees work their butts off..” (Note to Mel. C.: I know there's a municipal election coming up and Mr. Ross is running for a position. But if he's just trying to impress voters, what about the ill-conceived 'volunteer wall' in each school you proposed on Monday. You're run- ning too, right?). Trustee Demmers on Oct. 7: "It seems to me it would be better off as a board bylaw." Trustee Demmers on Oct. 20, after trustees at both meetings noted the Ed. Act has precedence over board bylaws: "If our bylaws have a higher standard... they have to be followed." Oshawa Trustee Susan Shetler: Supports the motion "in spirit," but not in practical terms. "Trustees are very busy people," and later, "We have a legislature where we're lucky if we have 50 per cent come out for a vote." Student Trustee Liam Mooney to Trustee Shetler: "Two wrongs don't make a right." Reporter Mike Ruta, again imag- ining he is a character in one of the Alien movies: "Kill me." P PAGE 4 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, October 26, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Keep residents in the loop Hospital officials must be mindful of community’s fears Durham Region has had its share of changes and disap- pointments in hospital service in the past decade as our local facilities became part of large corporate struc- tures. So, when the management of Rouge Valley, Ajax and Picker- ing hospital presented a 'brainstorming' document at an open meeting of its board of directors presenting the spectre of relo- cating entire departments and major services to the Centenary hospital site in Scarborough, they should have been prepared for the community fall-out. One option in the document even suggested the Ajax site could be closed entirely, although a page further in eliminated that possibility from consideration. Still, communities are not unlike children with the old game of 'telephone' where a rumour starts at one end of the circle and by the time the whispers work their way back to the starting point, the story has com- pletely changed or been exaggerated beyond recognition from its origins. The fact the hospital put on paper options like "100 per cent pediatrics and obstetrics to relocate from RVAP (Ajax-Picker- ing site)" without doing any study to see if they were worth the paper they were printed on was irresponsible. They should have known it wouldn't be long before this early draft 'brain- storming' document was the talk of west Durham. And it is, right down to ladies' afternoon art groups and homecare work- ers and their clients. Talk, and fear, is rampant just as the com- munity is fund-raising for expansion of the hospital. Now offi- cials assure us, many of these suggestions have already been discarded. For example, the possibility of relocating all elective surgery to one site won't wash, says Maria Milanetti, vice-pres- ident of communications, because neither site is large enough. There are going to be times when the hospital corporation is going to have to look at the most efficient delivery of services if it is going to meet its financial responsibilities and provide the most effective, efficient service to the communities it serves. But in Durham, where many of the people already experienced the loss of emergency services and many others along with it at the Whitby hospital, it is unconscionable to throw out unlikely scenarios without preparing the public for their arrival. The hospital must now go into damage control mode and fix this public relations nightmare before it hampers the crucial fund-raising campaign that everyone has worked so hard to support. Pickering’s two branches of the Royal Canadian Legion feel differ- ently about the new cuddly toy dogs being used to raise awareness about Remembrance Day with children over the age of three. “We don’t feel it’s right to put a poppy on a plush toy,” said Jim Cor- bitt, president of Bay Ridges Branch 606. “The poppy is a symbol of Remembrance and we feel this is negative.” ‘Poppy puppy’ toys were made available Sept. 1 to branches across Canada to sell. The pups are white and dotted with red poppies, and come in two sizes: a three and a half inch clip-on model that sells for $4 and a seven-inch plush toy available for $8 each. “Hi! My name is Poppy Puppy. I’m special because I wear poppies to help us remember,” reads the slo- gan of Legion advertisements fea- turing the pups. But while members of Bay Ridges are against the idea, the Claremont Legion has put in a minimum order for the pups, about 12 small toys and 10 large, expected for delivery this week. “We thought we’d give them a try,” said branch president Gail Wideman. “Everyone is enthusiastic about it here.” The pups might be a better fit for a smaller community like Clare- mont, which is very family-orientat- ed, she said. Her branch has about 15 working members compared to 400 at Bay Ridges. “I think anything that gets the message across to kids is great,” she added. “But everyone’s entitled to their opinion.” Mr. Corbitt, on the other hand, doesn’t feel the toys will be very ef- fective with younger generations. He feels more can be accomplished with veterans visiting schools. They often talk to classes, he said, bringing pamphlets, and other infor- mation to give students. “I’m a school teacher and I don’t see how they’re going to help,” he added. “Whether you use a plush toy or a pic- ture, I feel (children) get a better understanding even from a picture than a plush toy.” Poppy puppies aren’t something to be forced on branches, but will only be made available to those re- questing them, said Bob Butt, a spokesman with the Legion’s Dominion command in Ottawa. “Orders have been strong and brisk,” he said. Dominion command has ordered 150,000 pups as part of a pilot project for the Le- gion’s new centralized supply system. Sales of the toys go to help branches generate funds for their own general fund, and are separate from the Legion’s annual poppy campaign, which collects do- nations for veterans, former service people and their de- pendents. On Thursday, the day he offi- cially became premier, Dalton McGuinty created a new min- istry of public infrastructure re- newal to “centralize infrastruc- ture planning to achieve maxi- mum leverage for taxpayer dol- lars in the key areas of educa- tion, health, transportation and the environment in communi- ties all across Ontario.” Under the Progressive Con- servative government, that used to be SuperBuild’s role - and it was very good to Durham Col- lege and the University of On- tario Institute of Technology, providing tens of millions of cap- ital dollars, including $60 million to start the UOIT. “Every government wants to set its own mark, and that’s to- tally understandable,” says Mr. Polonsky. “Every company wants to do that, every newspa- per wants to do that.... At the same time, every government in- vests in capital infrastructure. The fact that they may want to call it something else, and maybe re-shape its form, that’s fine.” He says the university all along intended to pay its own way as far as capital growth is concerned. That means coming up with $3.5 million per year in addition to two, major fund-rais- ing initiatives in the next 15 years. The first $100-million campaign is underway and roughly $30 million has been raised, says Mr. Polonsky. Still, that plan includes getting a fair share of capital grants from the Province - namely, $20 million every four years. “We think that’s a terrific deal for the government,” he says. Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP Wayne Arthurs invited Mr. Polonsky to get his funding re- quests into the new government. But Mr. Arthurs, sworn in just hours before the interview, said it was a bit premature to com- ment, never mind confirm an approval of, the university’s funding expectations. “I certainly can’t make any commitments on behalf of the government,” he said. However Mr. Arthurs added the early signs are good for all education stakeholders. “Education and health were set out as two of the key corner- stones of the election cam- paign...,” he said. “I would think that should auger well for the university.” Again emphasizing that the Liberal government was just hours old, Mr. Arthurs said, “There’s no indication at all” that the role SuperBuild used to play, as a central funder of all government capital work, would change. Similarly, he hasn’t heard of any planned changes to the public-private partnership aspect of the former agency. “All this stuff will become clear in the relatively short term,” said Mr. Arthurs. However one difference is that unlike under the Tories, the new agency now has a minister, David Caplan, who is a part of the cabinet. One of those public-private arrangements was for a new Durham Region courthouse, f irst announced by the ex-Bob Rae government. The former Tory government roughly four months ago said six qualified consortia had been identified as “eligible to respond to a (Super- Build) request for proposals to design, build, finance, own and operate the new courthouse in Durham.” A decision on who would get the project was expected this fall. Ajax, Oshawa and Whitby were pegged as possible sites for the roughly 350,000 square-foot facility. Mr. Arthurs says he’s “opti- mistic” the courthouse will re- ceive provincial dollars, given that the plan has been around while three different govern- ments and two parties came and went at Queen’s Park. “It’s not as though it’s a brand new idea,” he says. SuperBuild phase-out not a concern Phillip Fernandez of Radom Street has been charged with sexu- al assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching. Patricia Manson, education di- rector of the Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board, on Friday re- leased a statement saying the al- leged victim is neither one of Mr. Fernandez’s students nor a student in the Durham Catholic system. She also stated that Mr. Fernan- dez had immediately been relieved of his classroom teaching duties. The school was setting up a support team to offer help to students and staff affected by the situation. “The board will carefully monitor the circumstances surrounding the charges made against Mr. Fernan- dez,” said Ms. Manson. Mr. Fernandez made arrange- ments with the Durham police to turn himself in at the Oshawa Com- munity Police Office on Thursday. He was arrested and released. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 27. And with no public consulta- tion?” Ms. Milanetti said it’s not an “all up for grabs” approach RVHS is taking and that they have hosted town hall meetings for public consultation and have discussed it with staff. “We know now we need to go to a ‘warm-warm’ model,” she said, adding obstetrics and pediatrics will remain at both sites, as will emergency services. RVHS’ research of both com- munities has proven the younger population to be here in Durham Region, Ms. Milanetti said. Those kinds of services are key to serv- ing that demographic. Neither hospital operating room could handle elective surgery moved to one site or the other, she pointed out. The RVHS board of directors has approved a strategic plan putting forth a new set of values and vision for the corporation, but changes to the future service delivery are only in the very pre- liminary stages of discussion, said Mr. Martin. However, if you discover a persistent lump in your breast, any changes in breast tissue, or any other abnormality, consult your physician immediately. MYTH : A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread. An x-ray of the breast is called a mammogram. The x-ray and the pressure on the breast from the mammography unit cannot cause cancer to spread. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation advocates a three-step approach to breast health, including a monthly breast self- examination (BSE), an annual clinical exam by a health care professional and a mammogram, where age or risk appropriate. MYTH: Mammography is 100 per cent accurate in early breast cancer detection. Mammography is a very important diagnostic tool for detecting breast cancer in its early stages, however, it is not foolproof. Even if a person has a normal mammogram result, any lump or change in the breast should be checked out by a physician. MYTH: Women under 40 years of age don’t get breast cancer. Although the risk is lower for women under 40, breast cancer can and does affect women of all ages. If you feel a lump in your breast and it persists for more than one menstrual cycle, be proactive and have it evaluated by your doctor. MYTH: Men do not get breast cancer. This year, an estimated 140 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40 will die from it. While the percentage of men who are diagnosed with breast cancer is low, men should also give themselves monthly exams and report any lumps, discharge or abnormalities to their physician. Rouge Valley Health System COMMUNITY REPORT W hen Rene Soetens speaks about his role in the Rouge Valley Health System’s Vital Links campaign, he speaks from the heart. As a long-time resident of Ajax, he has had plenty of first-hand experience with Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering—his wife, June, who worked there part-time, gave birth to their three children at the hospital. Soetens is also a founding mem- ber of the Ajax and Pickering Hospital Foundation and a former chair of the Foundation. As vice chair of the $34 million capital campaign, he continues to give something back to the community. Soetens says it is nice to know he has a hand in shaping quality health care in the region. “It feels good to be able to influence a positive outcome that will help the com- munity,” he says. So far, individuals and corporations have been very supportive of the Vital Links campaign—to date, more than 70 per cent of the funds have been raised. The money is earmarked for redeveloping facili- ties at both of the Rouge Valley Health System sites. “Lots of good charities are looking for support,” Soetens says. “We ask that peo- ple remember the folks who provide care when they need it the most.” He adds that the local hospital is often forgotten when people make charitable contributions. “If the community hadn’t stood up and supported the original hospital sites (Centenary and Ajax Pickering), the hospi- tals never would have been built. The biggest challenge of the campaign is putting the hospitals’ needs on the radar for the community, and letting them know how much we need their support.” Soetens says there is a common miscon- ception among the general public that their donations aren’t required, but he stresses that every contribution, no matter how small, adds to the success of the campaign. In his spare time, Soetens is involved in the Rotary Club of Ajax and in local politics.■ M any organizations have a mis- sion statement – sometimes found in a dusty frame on the wall, or illustrated in a tired- looking poster in the staff room. Released with great fanfare, too often these well- meaning statements are quickly forgotten by all. The creation of Rouge Valley’s new values, vision and mission started with a firm commitment that this document would not suffer the same fate. “We had no interest in just creating some catchy phrase that would just sit on our wall,” explains Hume Martin, Rouge Valley’s C.E.O. “What we wanted was to create a document that speaks to what we are and what we do, and will serve as a guiding principle for our activities and day-to-day decision making.” In many ways, Rouge Valley’s mission statement reiterates values that are already firmly in place at the hospital. There’s a strong emphasis on family-centred care, a principle the hospital has been commit- ted to for many years. A family-centred care approach respects the individual’s and family’s need to be in charge of their care at the most basic level. It respects their integrity and their cultural values. At Rouge Valley, that principle mani- fests itself in many ways. In the surgery department, for example, children are given extra-special treatment, from the child-friendly waiting area stocked with toys and books, to the little toy cars used to wheel them to the operating room. In continuing care and rehabilitation, special entertainment is often arranged for patients, and specially trained visiting dogs come in on a regular basis to com- fort pet lovers. Throughout the hospital, every effort is made to involve and include both the patients and their family members in decisions regarding their care. But there is still much room for improvement, a fact that is recognized in Rouge Valley’s vision. One excellent example is the introduction of culturally sensitive food choices. “We want to be leaders in family-cen- tred care,” explains Martin. “We’re aiming to be the best, and that sets the bar pretty high. But I’m confident that we can get there – we’re already well on our way.” There are still some barriers that Rouge Valley needs to overcome to fulfill its family-centred care mandate, and one of those is the physical plant at the two hospitals. At the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering site, for example, the labour and delivery room are relatively modern, and allow for greater family involvement in the entire process. But at Rouge Valley Centenary, the labour and delivery rooms are older and relatively small. Their size and set up make the kind of involvement families expect today—and that studies show is better, health-wise, for both mom and baby—difficult to achieve. To solve this dilemma at Rouge Valley Centenary, plans are well underway for the construction of a new, state-of-the-art family birthing centre, which should be ready in 2005. Similar physical challenges present themselves in the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering emergency department, a 24- hour, 7-day a week service, but the recent renovation has helped in the short-term. In the long term we have plans for a $45 million of the emergency department and site by 2005. “Family-centred care is a proven con- cept – clearly a superior way to deliver healthcare to our patients,” explains Martin. “It is also an approach that is strongly favoured by those that we serve. A/P PAGE 14 NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY EDITION, October 26, 2003 www.durhamregion.com A s often as the statistics are quoted, they remain sobering — one in nine Canadian women can expect to develop breast cancer during her lifetime, and breast cancer is still the leading cause of death among women between the ages of 35 and 55. Studies prove that early detection is one of the best weapons against this disease, with survival rates of greater than 80 per cent as a result. With this statistic in mind and a com- mitment to family-centred care, Rouge Valley Health System opened a truly unique facility — the Transamerica Breast Screening and Diagnostic Centre, located at Rouge Valley Centenary. This facility is designed to offer a full continuum of care, combining early detec- tion, prevention, treatment and supportive care. Services include screening, two new mammography units, a minimally invasive procedure known as stereotactic breast biopsy, and surgical treatment including Sentinel lymph node mapping. Educational services are also enhanced, and all clients have access to the teaching of self-breast exams by a nurse clinician. One of the goals of the centre is to ensure that every woman with an abnormal screening can obtain “fast track” entry into the health care system with immediate access to highly skilled surgeons, radiologists and oncolo- gists, as well as other excellent health care professionals. “One of the most important aspects of the centre is that it recognizes the profound emotional impact of this disease,” explains Donna Woodhams, Manager of Outpatient Surgery and Clinics.”This centre is a com- fortable place where our patients and their families will receive both physical and emo- tional support to cope with this disease.” The centre recently added access to another new diagnostic service, eliminating the need for painful lymph node surgery. In 1996, Pickering resident Gail Snyder was diagnosed with breast cancer, and underwent the procedure of having her lymph nodes removed to see if the cancer had spread to her lymph system. That painful and debilitating experience prompted Snyder to begin a fundraising campaign known as “Bevy of Baskets”, which enabled Rouge Valley to purchase a $40,000 piece of equipment known as a Navigator GPS. Traditionally, if physicians suspect a patient’s breast cancer has spread to her lymph system, a search for the sentinel node is conducted by removing lymph nodes from the armpit area. This is a painful procedure that can lead to complications including severe numbness, swelling and infection of the patient’s arm. The new technique that uses the Navigator GPS searches for the sentinel node by injecting a radioactive “tracer” sub- stance at the tumor site. A thin probe is inserted and draws fluid and nodes from the area to determine whether the sentinel node is present. If the nodes are cancer-free, the cancer has not spread. The procedure is much less invasive than previous options such as lumpectomies, or biopsies. Rouge Valley Health System is now the only hospital east of the Don Valley Parkway and west of Oshawa offering this service. ■ It’s in our nature to care. COMMUNITY REPORT T he nursing profession chose Arden Eldridge when she was a teen in pur- suit of a career in medicine. And she has never looked back. “As much as I need my job, I really love my job,” says Arden, who trained at Rouge Valley Health System (then Ajax and Pickering General Hospital) as a student more than 19 years ago. Since then, she has worked in the hospital’s Telemetry unit for a year and 12 years in Intensive Care before hitting the ground running at one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the region. Her impressive clinical skills also reveal a simple yet essential talent: empathy. “I never lose site of the fact that each patient I treat could be me or my family,” says Arden. “I always try to put myself in their place and make sure I’m looking after not only their clinical needs, but their emo- tional ones as well. “Sometimes there isn’t any more I can do for a patient, but yet I don’t want to leave their side. Just sitting next to a patient who is very worried, putting my hand on their arm as reassurance makes all the difference, and tells them, ‘You’re going to be okay.’” Some days are harder than others, espe- cially with limited resources and a depart- ment that is designed to handle less than half of the patients that actually come through its doors. The increase in patient volumes is a source of stress for Arden since she respects that everyone who makes the trip to Emergency expects and deserves timely treatment. “I just want everyone who comes here to know that while they may have to wait, we do give everyone excellent, thorough care. We have a fantastic team of doctors and you can’t meet a smarter, more caring group of nurses than at Rouge Valley. We’re all here because we very much want to be. “While we don’t often hear back from patients who have either been discharged home or moved to other areas in the hospi- tal, the odd time when we do get a card or phone call, it means the world to us.”■ I want to support the Rouge Valley Health System! Ellen Brown, 60, of Pickering, and John Piccitto, 48, of Oshawa were killed instantly when their cars collid- ed on Island Road in Scugog just after midnight March 2, 2001. As a result of the Durham Regional Police investigation and reconstruc- tion of the crash - which the defence contends was flawed - a third driver alleged to have caused the collision, William Allan Kane, was charged. Mr. Kane, 33, pleaded not guilty to two counts each of impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of the fatal collision. His trial was suddenly adjourned Thursday at the request of prosecu- tor Ken Polley, citing “new informa- tion” he received regarding the case. The unusual delay interrupted three days of continuing testimony from police collision reconstructionist Constable Carol Stenzel. In court Friday, Mr. Polley with- drew the charges against Mr. Kane. The assistant Crown attorney of- fered a vague explanation in open court for abandoning the prosecu- tion. “New information which came to light only yesterday would raise a rea- sonable doubt about the accident re- construction in this case,” Mr. Polley told Justice Edwin Minden. “The Crown no longer has a rea- sonable prospect of conviction,” he said. Outside court, neither Mr. Polley nor defence lawyer Alan Risen said they could comment on the reasons for the sudden halt to the prosecu- tion. However, Durham Regional Po- lice spokesman Dave Selby, speaking on behalf of Deputy-Chief Rod Piukkala, said the force will consult with the Crown’s office and take a “se- rious look” at what went wrong in the case. Mr. Risen told the court the de- fence “has maintained for a long time Mr. Kane is not responsible” for the deadly crash, and had the trial con- tinued forensic experts were lined up to support the defence position. The development left Mr. Kane “overwhelmed with relief,” he said. The self-employed satellite installer spent three months in jail after the crash and two more years under “vir- tual house arrest” after being granted bail. “The past three years have been a nightmare. I’m so happy right now, I can’t think of the word,” he said out- side Superior Court of Justice in Whitby. Mr. Kane said his happiness at being vindicated was tempered with sadness for the families of crash vic- tims Ms. Brown and Mr. Piccitto. Police alleged Mr. Kane was crimi- nally responsible for the fatal colli- sion; the cause of the crash was hotly disputed at the short-lived trial. The prosecution and defence each proposed different collision scenarios, both supported by their own recon- struction experts. The Crown theory was based on the police reconstruction by Const. Stenzel, of the Durham Regional Po- lice specialized traffic services unit. The officer, who has been a collision reconstructionist since 1999, had con- cluded Mr. Kane caused the violent crash by rear-ending Ms. Brown’s southbound Cavalier with his 2001 Chevy Tahoe. The rear impact from the Tahoe, Const. Stenzel testified, caused the Cavalier to “spin out” into the path of oncoming traffic, where it was struck by Mr. Piccitto’s north- bound Pontiac Grand Prix, killing both drivers. However, Mr. Risen suggested the police reconstruction of the crash was faulty from the start and premised on fundamental investigative errors. Mr. Risen raised the defence theory Mr. Piccitto and Ms. Brown were killed in a “horrendous accident” two minutes before Mr. Kane reached the crash scene in the Tahoe. With both cars disabled on the dark road, Mr. Kane collided with the rear of the Cavalier, in the proposed de- fence scenario. “On a dark unlit road, he wouldn’t have been able to detect those vehi- cles in time to avoid crashing into the Cavalier,” Mr. Risen said in an inter- view. The defence theory is backed by two former senior Toronto Police col- lision reconstructionists, he said. Court heard police conclusions were based on evidence including damage to the front of the Tahoe and rear of the Cavalier, and apparent “gouge marks” on the road, indicating a point of impact between the SUV and Cavalier. Mr. Risen suggested minor nicks on the snow-covered road were mistaken for gouge marks. Meanwhile, eyewitnesses in a vehi- cle travelling behind the Tahoe gave accounts “that were totally consistent with the defence theory,” he said. “The reason you can’t explain it is because it can’t happen that way,” Mr. Risen said at one point while cross-examining Const. Stenzel on apparent discrepancies in the evi- dence. Wrestling has provided Stan Tzogas with a forum to ‘make a difference’ BByy PPaauull FFuutthheeyy Staf f Writer AAJJAAXX ——For Stan Tzogas, the true measure of success does not lie wholly in a final score. "To me, there's very many ways of achieving success," says Tzogas, the head coach of the Team Impact Wrestling Club. Tzogas, 39, who recently re- turned from the world Greco- Roman wrestling champi- onships held in France, has crafted an impressive résumé at the local, national and interna- tional levels of the sport. Locally, a number of Team Im- pact members can point to his direct influence on their wrestling careers since he joined the organization in 1990. The non-profit club, founded in 1973 and geared toward Durham Re- gion students, is considered a perennial contender in meets throughout the province and the country based on the solid tech- nical preparation its members undertake. He's travelled extensively for competitions overseas. Tzogas was the head coach for Canada's hugely successful entry at the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, England, in 2002. The Canadian medal haul at the Games was seven in wrestling, with four gold and three silver. Looking ahead, there is the tantalizing possibility of a trip next year for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, as Tzogas was ap- pointed the Greco-Roman coach for the Canadian wrestling team. Provided a Canadian qualifies for one of the event's remaining 10 spots - to be chosen from qualifiers in Serbia and Uzbek- istan in February and March - Tzogas will partake in what is considered the pinnacle of ama- teur athletic competition. Not only that, he'll be doing it in the modern Olympic birthplace in an event which traces its roots to the eighth century BC. "To be part of that would be my ultimate goal as a coach." Greg Mathieu, the executive director of Wrestling Canada, says Tzogas has played an im- portant role in the sport's devel- opment through years of experi- ence and dedication. "Certainly he's been one of the coaches who has made one of the biggest contributions both in terms of coaching at a national level and developing younger athletes," Mathieu says. When he started with Team Impact (then known by its origi- nal name, the Oshawa Olympic Wrestling Club), Tzogas was also beginning his teaching career in the phys-ed department at Dun- barton High School. "I was very enthusiastic about coaching high school," he recalls, explaining how he took the step to get involved outside of the reg ular high school sporting loop with an organization that has become a big part of his life over the past 13 years. During that time, the club adopted a new name, a broader drawing area and a wider age- range of membership. Tzogas the teacher moved on to a three- year stint at Henry Street, before settling into his current position on the staff at Pickering High School. For Tzogas the coach, howev- er, his initial enthusiasm for one of the world's oldest sports has not waned at all. The challenge is there every day. Whether it's grappling with the concern of the club's ongoing need for funds, or taking one of his charges through a training reg imen, Tzogas has embraced each obstacle. He's also current- ly involved with a proposal to see a wrestling program established at Durham College, which would give an avenue for post-sec- ondary age students from the area who would otherwise have to go to schools in Guelph, Hamilton or Montreal. Added to the commitment of holding two-hour practices four times a week on a year-round basis with the club, these duties might all seem overwhelming, but the dedication to make him- self a better coach, along with his passion for the sport, keep him going. "This is my life. This is not work for me," he explains. "I don't know who I would be without this sport." Don Westlake, president of Team Impact and one of its co- founders, is struck by Tzogas' commitment and dedication, qualities that have made the Scarborough native one of the best in the business. "Stan is as good as any coach in Canada," Westlake says with- out hesitation. Tzogas, who says he gains just as much satisfaction from watching a student pin an oppo- nent to the mat to win a gold medal as witnessing one of his pupils develop a more disci- plined, conscientious and thoughtful approach to life out- side the gym, knows the time commitment has been enor- mous. "I've sacrificed a lot," he ac- knowledges. "I've sacrificed rela- tionships. I've sacrificed time with my family. I've sacrificed ca- reer opportunities in teaching." With those sacrifices, though, the sport has also given back, he stresses. "It's given me an opportunity to make a difference," he says. "I find that most rewarding." AAJJAAXX ——A trip to the Maritimes had a silver lining for the Pickering High School Trojans senior boys' volleyball team. The nine-member Trojans team made its first ever appearance at the high-calibre Dalhousie Univer- sity Tournament over the Thanks- giving long weekend. A hotbed for U.S. college re- cruiters looking to add talent from Canadian schools, the tournament attracted approximately 30 to 40 teams, including ones from On- tario, the U.S. and from the Mar- itime provinces. The Trojans finished with a sil- ver medal in the eight-team 'A' di- vision of the tournament. They lost in the final to Hillcrest from Ottawa. Meanwhile, Courtice Sec- ondary School completed the On- tario sweep of the division by win- ning the bronze medal. Pickering High coach Scott Bur- rows was pleased not only with the calibre of the tournament, but also with the chance it afforded his players to bond as a team. "It was absolutely amazing. We had a great tournament and not just because of our performance, but because it was a team-building road trip for us. The guys were awesome," says Burrows. The Trojans swept through pool play, winning every game against schools from the Maritimes -- two teams from Nova Scotia and one from Newfoundland. In the semifi- nals, Pickering High defeated Courtice Secondary School to earn a shot at Hillcrest in the final. Trojans' Jordan Matthews was named to the tournament's all- star team. In addition to the play of Matthews, Burrows was especially pleased with what first-year senior player Andrew Bergman brought to the court. A middle player by position, Bergman was moved to left side and thrived at that posi- tion. "He had a great, great tourna- ment," says Burrows. In recent Lake Ontario Sec- ondary School Athletics (LOSSA) league play, the Trojans took two matches over J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate and the Uxbridge Sec- ondary School . The Trojans defeated Uxbridge 2-0 (25-15, 25-17) and J. Clarke 25- 16 , 25-22. In the other match, Uxbridge beat Richardson 25-17, 25-12. Local members of the Ontario Volunteer Emergency Rescue Team (OVERT) were called by Toronto police after the young Asian girl was taken from her North York bedroom between Sunday night and Monday morning. Police now say they don’t believe it was a random abduction. “We had initially on Tuesday 70 people on scene and we followed up with 40 people (Wednesday),” said Shane Harbinson, OVERT execu- tive coordinator. Along with a ravine area about two square kilometres, the group searched residential districts in- cluding 500 to 700 backyards for ev- idence relating to Cecilia’s disap- pearance. OVERT performs professional searches, especially ones in urban areas using trained volunteers and specialized divisions such as K9 and marine. “Yesterday was a great example,” Mr. Harbinson added as to why it is so important to have trained volun- teers. “It’s difficult to look for evi- dence, it’s harder to look with 30 or 40 (media) cameras in your face. “You do an urban area you’ve got paths, parks...residential areas,” he added. “It offers a significant amount of challenge.” When contacted for assistance, the OVERT team members met at staging areas, such as the south end of Ajax’s Harwood Mall, signed in, organized equipment, assembled into crews and went to Toronto. At the same time, its command staff met with police to create a search plan. “And all of that happens within a short period of time,” he added. In uniforms similar to those worn by the police tactical unit, regular OVERT volunteers were sent into the field upon arrival. “Our first deployment was around 5:30 a.m. until about 9 p.m. (Tuesday) and then we were de- ployed again around 6 a.m. till about 8:30 to 9 p.m.,” said Blaine Mar tin, Uxbridge resident and OVERT volunteer. “We put quite a few hours in looking through the f ields, bushes, and subdivisions.” Mr. Martin began volunteering with OVERT about three years ago and has been on a couple of search- es. “I got a couple of kids myself and it’s in the back of your mind when you’re called out to something,” added Mr. Martin. While a few volunteers are still on scene, Mr. Harbinson said the team has been put on stand by since fin- ishing for the day on Wednesday. “Right now we’re hoping this suc- cessfully concludes, Cecilia is going to be found alive and in good health,” he added. “Right now the family still remains in our prayers and in our hopes. Certainly if there’s anything else we’re request- ed to do, I can guarantee we’re going to have dedicated profession- als who are going to be there for the community.” OVERT started in 1996 and has been growing since. With 100 volun- teers from across the region and 50 from other areas, it has an east and west division in Durham and has re- cently been building branches else- where. A volunteer organization, it only receives steady funding from Clar- ington and Oshawa, Mr. Harbinson said; other money is acquired through donations and fundraising. Rouge Valley Health System Foundation has named Rene Soetens and Allan Arsenault recipi- ents of the 2003 Howard Sokolowski Award.
