Deadline looms for flea market PICKERING ––A sharp- eyed witness helped police make a quick arrest after masked ban- dits robbed a doughnut shop clerk and patrons at gunpoint. Durham Regional Police said two men wearing black ski masks and brandishing a sawed- off shotgun and handgun burst into Coffee Time, at 1900 Dixie Rd., about 3 a.m. Tuesday. One robber pointed the shot- gun at the female employee and ordered her to hand over the cash, while the second armed thug robbed three patrons of wallets and cellphones, police said. The pair fled to a waiting getaway car and sped away. A witness provided police with a licence plate number of the suspect vehicle, which was registered to an address in west To ronto. About an hour later To ronto Police, tipped off by Durham investigators, took one suspect into custody at a Rex- dale residence while the hunt continued for the second sus- pect. Pickering vendors still not sold on new deal BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff Writer PICKERING —The fate of the Pickering Markets will be de- cided by the end of the business day Saturday. That’s how long vendors have to decide if they’ll make the move to a golf dome, which would be erected in the northwest corner of the Metro East Trade Centre parking lot for six months. Arley Karpman, a representative for the majority of the vendors, said he’s confident First Professional Shopping Centres will get the com- mitment it needs to go ahead with the temporary structure. “If vendors in the market don’t care enough about their business to make sure a temporary spot is available, I can’t speak to that,” said Mr. Karpman. “But I’m sure the majority will want to stay open.” The vendors are expected to va- cate the Metro East Trade Centre at the end of next month to allow for its demolition Feb. 1. Vendors have lobbied First Pro to extend their stay another six months until a new market can be built on Bayly Street near Squires Beach Road. But the developer, who plans to rework the site into a Sam’s Club and several other stores, said it must keep to its tight schedule and has offered the temporary fix. First Pro is asking vendors to commit to filling all 265 spots at the golf dome, which would be heated and offer 60,000 square feet of space. So far 175 vendors have signed the agreement, which includes a deposit for first and last month’s See MARKET page 4 Arrest made in gunpoint robbery Iron Futon $219 rrs TM FINANCING ACCEPTED PHONE ORDERS ACCEPTED • Bed Frame• Pillow Cases• Mattress Pad• Bed Rails• Sheet Straps • Comforter • Layaway • Pillow • Set-up • Disposal of Old Set • Pillow Protector• Percale Set of Sheets• Local Delivery ONLY WITH ANY MATCHING MATTRESS SET PURCHASED OR Any 4 FREE CHOICES NO PST & GST COUPON Set $339 DOUBLE $229 Set $409 QUEEN $289 Set $499 KING $479 Set $799 COMFORT SLEEP Single Mattress $189 15 YEAR WAR. The Ajax resident does- n’t complain about the daily commute. For him a satisfy- ing full-time job is a privi- lege he appreciates a little more than most. The 45- year-old is legally blind, a disability that puts many people at high risk of unem- ployment. Through the use of a number of new technolo- gies, Mr. Angus is able to perform the duties of his job as an inside sales represen- tative and purchasing and production scheduler in pretty much the same fash- ion as those with sight. “I communicate mostly through email,” says Mr. Angus, who uses a software program that reads the mes- sages for him. ‘Read to me’ excel spreadsheets allow him to carry out the admin- istrative aspects of his job along with a computer that is keyboard-command dri- ven instead of mouse driven. “I couldn’t work if I did- n’t have this technology,” Mr. Angus says, noting he uses many of the same tech- nologies in his personal life. One Uxbridge woman wants to make sure more Durham residents have full access to the type of devices that make a fulfilling life possible for everyone cop- ing in a seeing world with- out the benefit of sight. Deborah Wilson wants the provincial government to provide her the licence, and possibly the funding, to start an assisted device program (ADP) centre in Durham Region. “It will cut down on the wait time and give easy ac- cess to ADP services,” says Ms. Wilson, an accredited ADP assessor. Her job is to evaluate the needs of low vi- sion and legally blind clients and hook them up with the right equipment. Currently, she says, Durham residents are at a disadvantage com- pared to their counterparts in Toronto and the west GTA, where assessment centres are located. Ms. Wil- son says in addition to help- ing people in their work and home lives, she would be able to provide a service that would co-ordinate the equipment students use in school with the equipment at home, an important con- nection that isn’t always made under the current sys- tem. The proposal has re- ceived the support of Durham MPP John O’- Toole, who presented a 28- signature petition at Queen’s Park earlier this month. In his submission, Mr. O’Toole noted “clients, ophthalmologists, school boards, families, communi- ties and employers” in Durham have all expressed their support for the centre, “Through using the pro- grams Deb is setting up I have been able to acquire this technology and be gain- fully employed,” says Mr. Angus. There are more than 1,500 Durham residents reg- istered with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) in Durham, he says. “We could use the assistance out here.” ALLAN ANGUS ‘I couldn’t work if I didn’t have this technology.’ rent. It was to be finalized by the end of last weekend, but the markets lobbied for more time to consider the deal. “My hearing in many cases was peo- ple wanted a chance to look at it,” said Mr. Karpman. “Others wanted to show it to their advisers.” The agreement was circulated to vendors last weekend, which many consider to be the busiest weekend of the year at the market. Mr. Karpman agreed the timing was inopportune but was the best both parties could do given the impending schedule of demolition. Tom Ristov, a member of the Pick- ering Markets Merchants Association, said his group is happy with the extra space being offered — the original deal called for 50,000 square-feet — and that rent will rise 30 per cent for most vendors instead of the 45 to 50 per cent first pitched. “Our concerns were trying to keep all the vendors in business whether large or small,” he said. “I agree we’re going to have to be creative in terms of space but I think the price per booth will no doubt eliminate vendors.” Both he and Mr. Karpman agreed the antique dealers would be hit the hardest by the move. Currently, they pay $90 for a booth, compared to the $140 other vendors pay at the market, but they’ll pay $180 at the temporary site. On the other hand, the developer is spending $200,000 on the golf dome, including costs to lay a concrete pad and provide other building approvals, said Mr. Karpman. “First Pro has gone way beyond what otherwise would have been rea- sonably expected of them to help the merchants,” he added. Market vendors must decide on temporary plan by Saturday P PAGE 4 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, December 27, 2002 www.durhamregion.com BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUTBOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUTBOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 1-800-642-4561 or (905) 723-5211 1-800-642-4561 or (905) 723-5211 STOREWIDE SELL-OFF OCCASIONAL TABLES • LAMPS & ACCESSORIES OR ONE FULL YEAR NO INTEREST, NO PAYMENTS O.A.C.* *Taxes due at time of purchase plus $29.95 admin. fee. Here, in no particular order, are my wishes and hopes for 2003: • Prime Minister Jean Chretien will opt for an even earlier retire- ment date than the one he chose. Your time’s up, Jean. Time for some new blood, new ideas — the sooner the better. • Cancer research will continue to reach new heights in the elimination of the greatest scourge to mankind. Vi ewing a documentary some weeks ago, I discovered many forms of cancer that were once automatic death sentences are now responding to new and varied treatments. I do, however, have a vested interest in this area. My grandfather is dying of cancer. • The Toronto Raptors will finally get healthy in the new year and turn around what can only be described as an abysmal National Basketball Association season to date. And, some unsolicited advice for Lenny Wilkens: Tell your players there’s more to the game of basketball than jump shots from the perimeter. Take it to the hoop for a change, for cry- ing out loud. • The Toronto Maple Leafs will finally give long-suffering Leafs fans their due with a Stanley Cup. Hey, you can always dream, right? • Speaking of hockey, I’m hope- ful the Pickering Panthers and the Ajax Axemen — our beloved OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hock- ey League teams — will begin to show signs of life in the new year. Both are playing well below the .500 mark right now and need to play for pride in 2003. • I’m holding out hope that every one of the Pickering Markets ven- dors who, over the years, has made it one of the truly unique features of Pickering, will set up shop in anoth- er venue in the city. Perhaps Picker- ing council will offer more than lip service to the vendors and help them find a new home that will be even better than the old one. • This might finally be the year that long-suffering Ajax townsfolk see some construction at the old Ve rona Mall site. Town councillors have been talking the talk for far too many years. Maybe this is the year they get off their collective behinds and make something viable happen on that site. Hopefully, councillors will encourage the developers to do something unique with the Verona property. • That all the News Advertiser’s readership enjoys good health and prosperity in 2003. Happy new year! May 2003 bring hope, new birth and end of Chretien Al Rivett Sports Editor arivett@durhamregion.com P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, December 27, 2002 www.durhamregion.com MPPs have it wrong on workfare To the editor: Re: ‘Durham gets $1 million bonus for cre- ating workfare places,’Dec. 20. Our local MPPs feel the Province’s wel- fare changes are ‘making welfare work’. These are the same people who brought us environmental reform (budget cuts) and Walkerton, the people who reformed health with long waiting lists and over- crowded emergency rooms, the people who reformed, but backtracked and put more money into education, the people who backtracked on hydro reform, and about whom the provincial auditor lists a litany of excessive spending. Even in the welfare ministry, they over- spent on the Anderson Consulting comput- er system. Are we to believe they got it right this time, despite the death of Kim- berley Rogers, and the higher use of food banks? They may have cut the welfare rolls, but they didn’t change poverty. They just moved people to dead-end, minimum- wage jobs, and their children are just as poor. You and I will be paying for the chil- dren who suffer now long into the future, as they become adults — short-term gain for long-term pain to the taxpayer. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER DECEMBER 27, 2002 Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Nearly 42 years ago, an American president in his inaugur- al speech stood on the steps of the Capitol and said to the crowd, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.’ That well-turned phrase in the famous 1961 speech by John F. K ennedy marked in many ways the beginning of the 1960s and a time when many looked at the society they were living in and tried to make a difference. In the case of the United States, that included such ideas as the Peace Corps, where volunteers went to Third-World coun- tries to help out and lend a hand. Such volunteerism is always in season and often in demand. Here in our own community, the needs are prevalent and while many thankfully answer the call, more could be done. What are always needed are blood donations and Canadian Blood Services has a consistent schedule of blood donor clin- ics throughout the region each month. You can even phone ahead and book a time to give. You can do a favour for yourself, your family, your co- workers — anybody you come in contact with really — by get- ting a free flu shot. There is still an opportunity to do so and it could save you a week or more flat on your back and the chance of passing the flu on to others. There are several major food banks in operation throughout the year and those in need will greatly appreciate anything you can offer. Despite more than half-a-dozen years of solid eco- nomic performance here in southern Ontario, there are still many in society who need and depend on the kindness of strangers. There are groups galore who could use drivers (the Chil- dren’s Aid Society, Meals on Wheels, senior citizens’ centres), readers (the CNIB, literacy groups) and coaches or assistants (minor sports groups, Scouts and Guides, and many others). There are usually more little brothers and little sisters in need of companionship than adult volunteers to provide it for them. Many charitable associations could use people to put in a few hours here or there to offset expenses and to make sure fund-raising goes to those who need it most, not to administra- tion. Many groups would be thrilled if you could find the time and energy to find a few sponsors and walk, run or ride to raise money for a worthy cause. You don’t have to feel you need to change the world. But by doing something a little extra this coming year, you can help make the community a better place. So many good causes, so little time No matter who or where you are, someone could use your help www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, December 27, 2002 PAGE 07 A/P CANADA’S ONLY FURNITURE SUPERSTORES Plus!DON’T PAY ‘TIL 2004 No Money Down!* No Interest! Durham Regional Police said the woman reported she was walking west on Arthur Street, near King Street, at about 11:30 p.m. when she spotted a suspicious vehicle circle around the block a couple of times. As the van passed her a third time, it slowed down and “bumped” the woman, pushing her to the ground, po- lice spokesman Dave Selby said. “She’s knocked over, dazed a bit and falls to the side of the road. A man gets out of the vehicle, she thinks to assist her,” Mr. Selby said. Instead of giving a helping hand, the man grabbed the victim, he said. “He pulls her towards the vehicle and tries to force her into the sliding door on the driver side. She kicks and screams and is able to elude him.” The suspect drove off in the red minivan. The distraught woman, who was on her way to a house party, ran to a nearby residence and called police. She suffered minor injuries and was treated by paramedics. Police are looking for the driver of the van and are seeking any witnesses. The suspect is described as white, 25 to 30 years old, 6-foot-tall, slim build, with a bald or shaved head and big ears. He was wearing blue jeans. The van was possibly a Ford Wind- star or Chrysler model. Anyone who may have seen the van in the area or has information about the incident is asked to call Detective Mark Price at 905-579-1520, ext. 1835. Charges against Islamic school principal withdrawn Man endured ‘very heavy ordeal’ AJAX —Sexual assault charges against a cleric and prin- cipal of a private Islamic board- ing school in Ajax have been withdrawn because his alleged victims have left the country. Abdul Majid Khan, who was charged last year with four counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual exploitation and one count of sexual interference, was alleged to have assaulted four male students at the Institute of Islamic Learning in Ajax. Some charges were dropped ear- lier this year, but the remaining charges were withdrawn this month. “The two main complainants are no longer in the country,” as- sistant Crown attorney Ken Pol- ley explained, adding they are not planning to return soon. They are aware the charges have been withdrawn and understand the legal process can’t be put on hold indefinitely, Mr. Polley said. Mr. Khan, 41, still faces two charges for allegedly breaching his bail conditions. His lawyer, Alexander Sosna, said he hopes those are dealt with soon. “Mr. Khan has maintained since the day he was arrested that he was not guilty of all the alle- gations, and he maintains that to this day,” Mr. Sosna said. “It has been a very heavy or- deal he and his family have gone through.” Although he has remained principal at the school, on Audley Road north of Taunton Road, Mr. Sosna said bail conditions have kept him from teaching, “which has been very difficult for him”. — TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE Kick off the new year with a celebration AJAX ––Pickering- Ajax-Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker invites constituents to enjoy refreshments and en- tertainment at a New Year’s Levee being held Sunday, Jan. 5. The teachers contract expired Aug. 31. Ms. Gencey described the Durham District School Board’s Dec. 18 offer as “insulting, disrespectful” and said teachers would be meeting Jan. 9 “to talk about strategies for strike action”. But Sally McIlveen, the board’s employee relations superintendent, said the board made offers in the three key areas the union has identified as priorities, namely salary, benefits and preparation time, and was “a little bit disappointed in the response we got back. “We put $2.3 million on the table yesterday morning. What we received back was a list of 62 items that they want and had basically sub- mitted to us they want the whole package.” Ms. McIlveen said the board will not receive the $10.4 million from the Province, its share of the provincial pot targeted for contract agreements, until January, and that what it ac- tually means for the board is not yet clear. In a recent interview, board business superinten- dent Ron Trbovich suggest- ed the board wanted to see settlements in other GTA ju- risdictions before reaching agreements here as it aims to bring its employees to “the GTA average” in terms of collective agreements. Ms. Gencey said teachers would be willing to wait if it means a good deal, but “at the same time, we’re not willing to be held hostage and see what happens in the rest of the GTA.” A/P PAGE 12 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, December 27, 2002 www.durhamregion.com more than you came for ✮ EARN UP TO 50% MORE POINTS* WHEN YOU USE YOUR HBC CREDIT CARD AND HBC REWARDS CARD TOGETHER *Some exceptions apply. BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff Writer DURHAM —Two more local residents have been asked to help the Province make public buildings acces- sible to people with disabili- ties. Kathryn Bremner, of Whitby, and Tracy MacCha- rles, of Pickering, are the newest members of the Ac- cessibility Advisory Council of Ontario. “I’m really pleased to be a part of this,” said Ms. Bremn- er. “Society really needs to look at how we look at each other.” The council was estab- lished following the procla- mation of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act in February. It requires municipalities, universities, colleges, school boards, hospitals, public transportation organizations, and the Ontario Public Ser- vice to develop plans to make their buildings, programs and services more accessible. It also allows for regulato- ry codes and standards for the private sector. The council plays a key role in advising Citizenship Minister Carl DeFaria on the implementation of the act and a majority of its members must be people with disabili- ties. Five members were an- nounced earlier this year, in- cluding Duncan Read, of Ajax. Eight new members were added this fall, includ- ing Ms. Bremner and Ms. MacCharles. Ms. Bremner, an office manager for the Durham College Student As- sociation, said she was inter- ested in being involved after many years of advocacy work on behalf of the disabled. Her 17-year-old son, Scott, has cerebral palsy and uses a manual wheelchair. “Most people focus on the physical barriers but I think attitude is one of the largest barriers,” she said. “People assume someone who is blind is also deaf, or if someone’s in a wheelchair, people as- sume they’re not too bright.” Ms. Bremner holds out hope the act will be the first step towards public educa- tion. She is a past chairman of the Breaking the Barriers Forum on disability issues in Durham Region and founder of the Whitby and District Sledge Hockey Association. She counts her experience with families with special- needs children as being her greatest asset to the council, but feels the act will help everyone, from seniors with less mobility to a new mother struggling to open a door with a stroller. “Disability is everyone’s business,” added Ms. Mac- Charles, vice-president of human resources for Man- ulife Financial. Diagnosed with bone can- cer at age 17, she had limb- saving surgery in the United States and has a metal pros- thetic knee. It makes for some physical limitations such as negotiating stairs and manag- ing pain. Ms. MacCharles led the first joint union/management employment systems review under the government’s ac- celerated employment equity program and was the lead in- vestigator of a precedent-set- ting harassment case. “One of the good things about the act is it talks about removing barriers for all On- tarians,” she pointed out. “It’s very broad and that’s one of our challenges and our oppor- tunities.” www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, December 27, 2002 PAGE 13 A/P Selection will vary by store. BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer DURHAM ––Durham Regional Police were tight- lipped Monday about the grisly discovery of a human skull and bones in a secluded wooded area of Scugog. Police confirmed they are treating the location as a po- tential crime scene. A land surveyor found the remains Friday and called po- lice. The skull was found on top of some snow a short dis- tance from Pine Gate Road, near Mast Road, southwest of the Village of Utica, police said. Human bones were found nearby, also a short distance from the roadway. Inspector Bill Temple, of 26 Division, said police began a “suspicious death” investigation after an anthro- pologist confirmed the re- mains are human. It’s believed the deceased is a man; no other details are known. “We are treating it as a crime scene. This is obvious- ly kind of unusual. We have no idea who this is and what we’ve got at this point,” said Insp. Temple. Homicide unit Detective Brian Osborne is heading the probe with Detective Doug Parker, from the North Durham criminal investiga- tion unit. “It will be a labour inten- sive investigation to deter- mine who this person is, how he came to be there and how he met his death,” said Insp. Temple. “It’s not a heavily trav- elled roadway. It’s quite a pri- vate area,” he said. Police sealed a wide area surrounding the scene and erected a tent over the re- mains to protect them from the elements as investigators with the Forensic Identifica- tion Unit spent the weekend combing for clues. The bones were expected to be moved to Ontario’s Centre for Forensic Sciences lab in Toronto for post mortem tests. The age of the bones and the length of time they were there are still a mystery. Police said a large search perimeter was secured on the basis the bones might have been dragged by animals from another location nearby. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call investigators at (905) 579- 1520, ext. 5100, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. He has pleaded not guilty to committing gross indecen- cy and sexual assault. Fr. Herlihey, a former Newcastle parish priest and Bowmanville high school chaplain, was found guilty last year of sexually assault- ing a teenaged boy between 1984-1988, Superior Court Justice Michelle Fuerst was told Thursday during the priest’s testimony. He received an 18-month conditional sentence, known as ‘house arrest.’ His second trial has heard allegations he abused another young boy on five occasions between 1983 and 1985, also while he was parish priest at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Newcastle. The alleged victim, now 28, testified he was a Grade 4 student at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic school, on church property, when he was invited into the rectory to have lunch with Fr. Herlihey in his sec- ond-floor apartment. Fr. Her- lihey led him to a couch after lunch and fondled him, he said. The priest allegedly sexu- ally assaulted the child on four other subsequent occa- sions during visits to the rec- tory. During the fifth incident, Fr. Herlihey forced inter- course and encouraged him to perform fellatio, the man tes- tified. “Did you at any time under any circumstances sexually assault (the complainant)?” defence lawyer Richard Evenson asked Fr. Herlihey. “Never,” Fr. Herlihey re- sponded in a soft-spoken voice. “Did any of these incidents occur?” “No, they did not.” Of the alleged fifth attack, which the complainant de- scribed in court as causing un- bearable pain, Fr. Herlihey in- sisted: “That never hap- pened.” Fr. Herlihey agreed with prosecutor Jinwon Kim he was an “unconventional” priest as spiritual leader of St. Francis of Assisi until 1985. He regularly dressed in sandals and jeans, rather than his religious robe. He also was unusually “affectionate,” greeting parishioners and children with hugs and kisses, court also heard. Fr. Herlihey said he kept a busy schedule, as he was active in the school activities, organized weekend retreats for the church youth groups, and juggled marriage, student and family coun- selling with his regular re- sponsibilities. In cross-examination by the Crown, Fr. Herlihey ac- knowledged students on occa- sion visited him at his apart- ment alone. Fr. Herlihey said he vague- ly recalled the alleged victim and, while “it’s possible” he invited him to have lunch in his apartment, he doesn’t re- member. The Crown suggested stu- dents would also regularly visit Fr. Herlihey in the recto- ry living quarters just to talk over lunch, and the defendant agreed. As result of his conviction last year, Fr. Herlihey was stripped by the church of his “religious faculties” and lost his job as pastoral care work- er at St. Stephen’s Catholic Secondary School in Bow- manville, court was told. Justice Fuerst reserved her judgment after hearing clos- ing arguments. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, December 27, 2002 PAGE 15 A/P BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUTBOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 1-800-642-4561 or (905) 723-5211 Located In The Rear Of Clock GalleryClock Gallery BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT!BOXING WEEK BLOWOUT! *Taxes due at time of purchase plus $29.95 admin. fee. Keep those Christmas trees bag-free when setting out for collection It is good ‘fir’ the environ- ment to get your discarded Christmas tree ready for yard collection by removing all hooks, nails, and tinsel and by not putting it in a large clear plastic bag. Both the Town of Ajax and the City of Pickering will not be picking up Christmas trees if they are all ‘spruced up’in plas- tic. Instead, they will just be left to ‘pine’away at curbside. Plas- tic has always been a huge problem at composting facili- ties and this year positive action is being taken to keep it out of finished compost. “If you are using a plastic bag to remove a tree from your home, then carefully take it off at the curb so you can reuse it next year,” said Grant Taylor, manager of operations and en- vironmental services for the To wn of Ajax. Addressing the plastic issue became a priority with Picker- ing this autumn when the City offered two brown kraft paper bags to each homeowner to en- courage the use of paper as a container for fall leaves. If you forget, there will be no use ‘needling’ City Hall. Simply drag your tree to your own backyard and place it in a corner (debagged of course) where it can become a perfect sanctuary for birds and small wildlife all winter long. Come spring, you can cut it up and it will eventually decompose, or you can set it out for spring col- lection. Today’s market for recycled plastic film is very poor. The best thing to do is to avoid plas- tic bags as much as possible. Become ‘evergreen’ in the new year and get into the habit of taking reusable bags to stores when you shop and have your- self a happy holiday season. ❑ ❑ ❑ Most of the things we toss away during this time of year can be either recycled or com- posted. If you do not open packages carefully enough to save the paper for another year, put torn gift-wrap (not foil) into the blue box or a hamper that collects only paper. ❑ ❑ ❑ Coming soon: Durham Re- gion is expanding its blue box materials to include all plastic bottles with a twist cap, empty aerosol cans and paint tins with lids removed, drinking boxes, waxed gable topped milk-juice containers and all rigid alumini- um foil. Also the new house- hold hazardous waste depot is now open at Miller Waste, 1220 Squires Beach Rd. ❑ ❑ ❑ Early in January, The Scu- gog Green Team offers a ‘healthy planet’series. P’lovers, the new environmental store at 229 Queen St. in Port Perry, is hosting the free evening envi- ronmental series. Scheduled for Tuesdays from 7 to 9:30 p.m., the first session is Jan. 21 and looks at ‘green energy — the real alter- native’. Subsequent topics in- clude ‘pesticides and human health’ Feb. 18, ‘organic lawn care alternatives’March 25, and ‘celebrate Earth Day expo’ April 22. She’ll be in Great Britain, representing Cana- da in the 2003 Stage Dance Council International Ju- nior Tap Scholarship, put on by the British Associa- tion of Teachers of Danc- ing. The Grade 9 performing arts student at Oshawa’s O’Neill Collegiate quali- fied for the international event by winning the Cana- dian Junior Stage/Tap Scholarship in Toronto this fall. “I’m very excited and overwhelmed,” Jassy said. Her path to this honour has been a long one. She started dancing lessons when she was three and hasn’t stopped. “I always liked to dance all the time at home,” she said. “One day, my parents (Betty and Mac) decided to put me in dance.” Today, she studies with the Theatre Dance Acade- my and Carol Brown School of Dance. She got into the Canadian scholar- ship through Carol Brown. “I do about 12 hours of dancing a week plus prac- tising,” Jassy said. “I also take vocal lessons and piano. I love to perform for an audience. It’s really fun. It’s a great experience. It boosts your confidence.” The lessons and practis- ing also teaches discipline, she said. This fall, she took a Grade 5 dance exam and was marked by her examin- er for the junior scholar- ships in Toronto, she said. The only way dancers get into the scholarships is through the recommenda- tion of an examiner, she ex- plained. She competed in both jazz and tap, tap being her favourite. She took run- ner-up in the jazz and first in the tap. That first gets her into the international scholarship in December 2003. She’ll be one of seven young dancers com- peting in the junior catego- ry, performing a set routine and also learning steps taught by a choreographer. In the meantime, she in- tends to keep up her hard work but will try not to focus too much on the De- cember competition, at least not for a few months. “I’ll go with a positive attitude and do my best,” she says. Her dream for the dis- tant years beyond revolves around dance. “I’d like to dance in ‘The Lion King’ or in a Broadway musical,” she said. Her mother says the family is proud of her, with brother Tyson providing much support for his younger sister. “She has to give up a lot to do her dream,” her moth- er said. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, December 27, 2002 PAGE 21 A/P PICKERING 905-509-6565 Sun Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri & Sat ~ Wing Specials ~ Plump, Juicy Medium, Hot, Extra Hot or Suicide ~ Seafood Night ~ Steak Night ~ Triple ‘A’ Western Beef ~ Pasta ~ Pasta ~ Pasta ~ Mouth Watering Roast Prime Rib of Beef with Yorkshire Pudding King or Queen Size Cuts LOBSTERF E S T AUGUST 2 9 THCALL FOR D E T A I L S REGULAR MENUORDERS A V A I L A B L E EVERYDAY NEW YEARS’ TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE FEATURING THE POPULAR WHITEHOUSE BAND $60PER PERSON INCLUDING TAX THE HARP & CROWN PUBTHE HARP & CROWN PUB www.harpandcrown.com 300 Kingston Road (at Altona) Non-Smoking Dining in our separate Crown Room Live Bands Every Weekend Where Friends Meet . . . Helpers needed to heap pancakes at spring festival DURHAM — Volunteers are needed to help celebrate 28 years of maple syrup and family fun in north Oshawa. The Central Lake Ontario Conser- vation Authority (CLOCA) hosts the Maple Syrup Pancake Festival at Pur- ple Woods Conservation Area in Raglan March 8 to 16 and 22 and 23. The event might be a fun way for local high school students to log some of the 40 hours of community service they must complete in order to graduate. Volunteers are required to host ac- tivity centres and demonstrations, dress as costumed mascots, help serve food and drinks, hand out sur- veys and help wherever an extra pair of hands is needed. Volunteers must get to the conser- vation area on their own, bring a lunch and dress for the weather. For more information, call Annette at the CLOCA office, 905-579-0411, ext. 44, or e-mail dcgf@cloca.com. Before that, he claimed the title of the most successful bank robber in United States history. FBI agent Carl Hanratty is on his trail but Abagnele is always one step ahead in their game of cat-and-mouse. PINOCCHIO Directed by Roberto Benigni Starring Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, Carlo Guiffre Despite guidance from the Blue Fairy, and the love of his father, Gepet- to, a wooden puppet’s curious spirit and desire to be a real boy leads him into one wild adventure after another. CHICAGO Directed by Rob Marshall Starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere Everyone loves a legend, but in Chicago, there’s only room for one. Velma Kelley burns in the spotlight as a nightclub sensation. When she shoots her philandering husband, she lands on Chicago’s famed murderess row, re- tains Chicago’s slickest lawyer, Billy Flynn and is the centre of the town’s most notorious murder case, only in- creasing her celebrity. Roxie Hart, se- duced by the city’s promise of style and adventure, dreams of singing and dancing her way to stardom. When Roxie’s abusive lover tries to walk out on her, she too ends up in prison. Billy recognizes a made-for-tabloids story, and postpones Velma’s court date to take on Roxie’s case. Infamy is Roxie’s ticket to stardom. Billy turns her crime of passion into celebrity headlines, and in this town, where murder is a form of entertain- ment, she becomes a bona fide star - much to Velma’s chagrin. As Roxie fashions herself as America’s sweet- heart, Velma has more than a few sur- prises in store, and the two women stop at nothing to outdo each other in their obsessive pursuit of fame and celebrity. Jamie Del Mastro, 18, of the Pickering Swim Club, broke the club record while competing in the 100-metre freestyle event. Del Mas- tro swam to a time of 51.86 to finish second. Del Mastro was one of two swimmers from the Pickering club at the provincials. Graham Wolch also represented the club at the meet, which brings together many of the top swimmers in Ontario. Del Mastro also posted seventh- place efforts in the finals of the 50m breaststroke, 100m breast and 200m breast events. He was also eighth in the final of the 100m butterfly. Wolch placed 11th in the 50m breast, 12th in the 200m breast and 13th in the 100m breast. Del Mastro a maestro in the pool for Pickering club Annandale curlers get skinned BY JIM EASSON Special to the News Advertiser AJAX —The annual Annandale Curling Club Skins competition is being whittled down to only a handful of teams remaining in the mix for the cash prize. At the midway point of the draw, only four teams are still alive on the ‘A’side. By Jan. 29, the games of Jon Payne versus Bert Du- rand, and Steve Pritchard versus Bob Rudkin have to be settled with $8 an end up for grabs. Tw elve teams on the ‘B’ side have to meet by the same date, and the losers are sidelined. The same sce- nario exists in the consola- tion event where eight teams have until Feb. 15 to win in order to stay alive. ••• Speaking of skins games, Pickering Olympic curlers Collin Mitchell and Richard Hart have another chance for big winnings this week in the $100,000 M&M Meat Shops compe- tition. They join Jason Mitchell and skip Glenn Howard at the Oakville Curling Club Dec. 27 to 29. Seven other top teams will be there and the semifinals and final will be televised. ••• Save your Melitta Cof- fee filter UPC codes and deposit them in the box now at Annandale Curling Club. The company donates 50 cents to the club for each one, and the funds go to- ward youth curling. ••• The Friday Night Curl- ing conveners warn entries are filling up already in the annual St. Pat’s Mixed Bon- spiel.
