The Cheerios Mother Daugh- ter Walk for Heart and Stroke is being held in Ajax Sunday, Sept. 22. Everyone can attend, includ- ing fathers, sons, uncles and brothers, with the proceeds used to raise awareness of and battle heart disease and stroke among women. It’s the second year for the walk in Durham. In addition to participants, volunteers are needed. Along with the walk there will be magicians, clowns and a local band entertaining. See AIRPORT page 2 Business case for airport ripped Pickering group takes issue with preliminary findings by GTAA BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE Staff Writer PICKERING —The Greater Toronto Airports Au- thority (GTAA) will present preliminary findings on the financial feasibility of a Pickering airport to members of the local advisory committee this month. But, while the GTAA said final decisions, plans and construction are still years away and the business case is not complete, at least one member of the local commit- tee is already disputing its findings. “We hope to have a draft for the Pickering Advisory Committee (PAC) Sept. 18,” said Steve Shaw, GTAA vice-president of corporate affairs and communications and chairman of PAC. Mr. Shaw said the preliminary business case on the feasibility of building an airport on the federal lands in north Pickering will be included in the draft, but added it would still be “three or four years” before the findings are presented to the federal government and still more time before the Ottawa makes a decision on whether to go ahead. “Any final decisions are still years away,” he said. “This is only a preliminary report... there’s a lot of studies to do, a decision is a long way away.” The size and scope of a north Pickering airport is also far from finalized, said Mr. Shaw. He noted the GTAA is looking at three or four sce- narios in developing the business case and would be looking at 10, 20 even 30 years down the road in decid- ing the need for additional airport passenger capacity in the Greater Toronto Area. The Airports Council International (ACI) said Toron- to’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport was the 26th busiest in the world in 2001 with 28,042,692 passengers. However, Stephen Frederick, president of the local group Voters Organized to Cancel the Airport Lands (VOCAL) and member of PAC, said in an interview Thursday he has some se- rious concerns over the validity of the GTAA’s preliminary business case, the first being the passenger capacity num- bers. He said most conservative estimates are that airport passenger numbers will grow by 2.2 per cent per year and with expansion at Pearson currently under way opening capacity at the airport for 50 million passengers over the next decade, and additional capacity avail- able in Hamilton and the Toronto island airport, the need for an airport in Pick- ering is a long way away. However, Mr. Frederick believes the GTAA is using over four per cent pas- senger growth numbers in its business case for an airport in Pickering so it can get the airport built as soon as possible. “A city like Las Vegas, that is a des- tination city, only brings in 35 million passengers a year and they have casinos and amusement parks and all that,” he said. “It’s sheer stupidity; compare the numbers and it doesn’t make sense.” Mr. Frederick said he also believes the GTAA’s business case is flawed be- cause it involves teaming a new Picker- ing airport with Pearson. “Transport Canada said if there’s no business case for Pickering alone then it’s not going to be built,” he said. “Now they want to team it with Pearson until it becomes profitable. That totally vio- lates everything they said. Durham shelter officials say much more needed BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE Staff Writer DURHAM —While those com- bating domestic violence on the front lines in Durham appreciate the Province’s recent $21.4-million “in- vestment”, they also fear it may not be enough. “When they say investment I think it means they’re expecting some sort of return,” said Durham Regional Po- lice Constable Cheryl Carter. “With these initiatives I don’t know if there is one.” The provincial government’s three- pronged approach to domestic vio- lence focuses on protection and pros- ecution, support for victims, and pre- vention and education. The $21.4-mil- lion investment over the next three years is to provide additional support in all three areas. Of the total, $5 million is ear- marked to enhance the safety, accessi- bility and security of shelters for abused women and their children, with funds for installation of addition- al bulletproof doors and windows, re- placement of roofs and furnaces, and installation of wheelchair-accessible ramps. “Any step in this direction is posi- tive,” added Const. Carter. “But, $5 million across the province over three years, it’s not a lot of money when you look at the big picture.” Const. Carter was instrumental in bringing a women’s shelter to west Durham, called Lighthouse, which is expected to open in June 2003. The new shelter will not re- ceive any of the $5 million, as it is to rehabilitate and enhance ex- isting shelters. Since the temporary closure of Bowmanville’s Bethesda House in June, Denise House in Oshawa is the only women’s shelter cur- rently operating in Durham. Executive director Sandra Mc- Mormack said Denise House has no glaring infrastructure needs, but funding is always a concern. She agreed $5 million for all On- tario shelters might be spreading things a bit thin. “The money is going all across the province over the next three years, two thirds of it being one- time money. While it will do a lot and be very beneficial over the short term it’s not sustainable,” she said. “To truly address the issue and need for support there has to be sustainable support.” Findings from two recent in- quests into the murders of women in the province, Arlene May and Pickering’s Gillian Hadley, rec- ommended a complete review of women’s shelter funding across Ontario, an initiative Ms. McCor- mack said is critical to their sur- vival. But, Const. Carter would like to see the Province spend money on the front lines for proactive approaches, not committees, con- ferences and more inquests. “We have all the information, we’ve done all the inquests. We don’t need more committees we need to provide services,” she said. “We have to provide funds that can get to the front-line peo- ple.” BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff Writer DURHAM ––Local schools are being care- ful in marking the one- year anniversary of Sept. 11. The Durham Dis- trict School Board is- sued a directive to its public schools this week, requesting a minute of silence to be held during opening ex- ercises next Wednesday morning. “Students will be asked to reflect on ways to encourage peace in the world,” says spokesman An- drea Pidwerbecki. If schools wish to do more than the directive, they are certainly wel- come to do so, Ms. Pid- werbecki says. “We also want to stress we’re a public board and we need to be sensitive to all groups in the commu- nity,” she adds. The Durham Catholic District School Board has ad- vised its schools to con- sider two specific themes for some of the school eucharists, whole school and divisional assem- blies planned in remembrance of Sept. 11. “‘Celebration of Peace’ is an appropriate ser- vice for primary and junior stu- dents and ‘Days of Hope and Healing’ is a ser- vice appropriate for junior/inter- mediate/senior students and for school liturgies,” Director of Edu- cation Grant An- drews said in a memo this week. “It is impor- tant that we focus on the important memories of that day when dealing with children,” he writes. “We will remind them of all the kindness and generosity that people all around the world offered, rather than the terror and sorrow that was felt by so many.” Parents are bound to have questions when it comes to helping children cope with the disturb- ing images and information bound to find its way onto television with the anniversary. Correct misconceptions and speak in simple language and appropri- ate terms they can un- derstand. • Explain that the media has a responsi- bility to report all world events, good and bad. Tell them if they are bothered by what they’re watching or hearing, they can ask questions, turn off tele- visions and other media or do something else. • Put things in context. Explain even though they are seeing the tragedy over and over again, it only happened once, and in fact, it happened a year ago. • Continually remind your children they are safe and secure in their family, school and community. Explain that the event happened a year ago in another place. COLLECTIONS BEGIN WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 Durham police chief questions basis for Senate pot report DURHAM —Just say ‘no.’ That, says Durham Regional Police Chief Kevin McAlpine, should be Ottawa’s response to a controversial Senate committee report calling for the legal- ization of marijuana. The region’s top cop yesterday slammed the recommendation to make pot possession legal, echoing the posi- tion of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP). A 600-page report released Wednesday by the committee says marijuana is less harmful than alcohol and calls on Ottawa to make it legally available to anyone over 16 years, younger than the legal age to buy ciga- rettes. Trafficking would remain illegal, taking the profits away from criminals. A skeptical Chief McAlpine said he hasn’t read the report but is curious to know the “so-called evidence” on which the committee based its conclu- sions. He said not enough is known about the long-term damage caused by smoking marijuana and added he has- n’t seen a reliable study that proves pot carries less dangerous health and social consequences than alcohol. Anyhow, he figures the recom- mendations will just go up in smoke. “I think this committee is un- likely to drive significant change. It’s a Senate committee. I don’t see any signals (of change) from government,” Chief McAlpine said. The committee issued its find- ings following a two-year study of drug policy in which 234 witness- es were interviewed in Canada and around the world. It calls on federal legislators to erase the criminal records of any- one convicted of possession, make marijuana legal to all per- sons over 16 and impose a system by which government would con- trol distribution. While it strongly opposes le- galization, OACP said in a state- ment responding to the report, that it “would entertain” support- ing decriminalization of pot, meaning possession of pot would not result in a criminal record. With the start of a new school year, public school board trustees are front and centre again every other Monday night at Taunton and Anderson in Whitby. This group could spend an hour ar- guing if autumn follows summer. I fear us regulars who attend board meetings are in for another 10 months of personal agendas being pushed and disputes that have nothing to do with students — but then by now we know what to expect. So, I for one welcomed the news from board chairman Elizabeth Roy that the Ministry of Education is send- ing staffers to help trustees understand their role. Sadly, I agree with a local parent who predicts it’s not going to make any difference. Some of the board’s most ineffective trustees are stubborn know-it-alls and I don’t see that changing. One first-term trustee lamented last week that “we’re just not doing any- thing that we’re supposed to be doing” and found it ironic that as trustees ap- proach the third and final year of their term, they need to be reminded what they are there for. Witness the latest debacle over the ministry help. Trustee Roy said no trustee objected to the idea when she e-mailed board members in the sum- mer. That sparked a charge from Os- hawa Trustee Susan Shetler that she hadn’t received any such e-mail and it was the first she had heard of it. The fact is, Trustee Shetler attend- ed the June trustee meeting with MPPs when the issue came up. Scu- gog Trustee Martin Demmers queried Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker about a Ministry of Education facilitator conducting a governance workshop for trustees. Attempts were made to organize an informal trustee meeting in the summer, a meeting Trustee Shetler, in an Aug. 27 e-mail, said she had previously called for on the role of the trustee. In Trustee Roy’s July 16 e-mail to all trustees she states, “involvement of the Ministry of Education is also trying to be set up for this trustee meeting.” The informal meeting never hap- pened, but why is the issue of a facili- tator a surprise all of a sudden? Five trustees publicly said they had re- ceived the e-mail. One said he hadn’t checked his e-mail, another said she’s had computer problems all summer. Trustee Shetler, who called me to lay the charge against Trustee Roy, did not return several phone messages I left for her this week at her home and work. Hit and run. Trustee Roy said Tuesday she would ask board staff to look into claims trustees have problems receiv- ing e-mails and check the e-mail trail. If the record proves the e-mail was sent, Trustee Roy wants a public apol- ogy from Trustee Shetler. Let the games begin — again. Each time I call police to stop the cars/motorcycles with booming radios and amplified mufflers, they offer to send a car down to my neighbourhood to check it out. That’s all very nice and likely rather costly. But, is it only civilian vehicles that pass these cars with radios so loud we can hear the music more clearly than that in our car? Can loud mufflers on cars or motor- cycles be switched off when passing a po- lice car? I doubt it. Why don’t police tick- et these offenders for a noise violation when they encounter them on the road as the rest of us do on a daily basis? I’m growing increasingly intolerant of the tolerance afforded this growing num- ber of noise polluters. It’s high time the authorities tackled this issue of restoring the peace to our region. Consider the 703-page Regional Smoking Bylaw report de- livered a few days ago by the Durham Health and Social Ser- vices Committee. While the length and breadth of the tome might seem ominous, it’s refreshing to take a look inside and see how your tax dollars are put to work. The report surveys the health risks of smoking and studies which have proven second-hand smoke is a serious problem which leads to thousands of deaths in Canada each year. It also looks at the smoking bylaw process in other jurisdictions in On- tario and how effective it has been. But what’s most interesting - and it makes for a surprisingly quick read - are the hundreds of pages of comments from mem- bers of the public who have chosen to make their feelings known on the issue throughout 2002. If the goal of the committee was to seek out as many opinions and positions as possible, it has succeeded admirably. At numer- ous public meetings where 994 people responded to an in-hall survey, over the Web where another 300 offered their beliefs, and on comment phone lines where several hundred more pro- vided feedback, the committee heard plenty. Nearly 1,800 of- fices and businesses throughout Durham were questioned on their smoking policies. Certainly, committee members and both local and regional councillors have also done plenty of work on the issue. This superb report will be required reading for all those who will have input in the final decision of whether Durham Region will set a firm regionwide smoking bylaw, following in the foot- steps of Toronto, Ottawa and Hamilton among other Ontario mu- nicipalities. The key question has always been whether a comprehensive, no-exceptions, public places ban will severely hurt restaurants, bars and especially charity locations like bingo halls. Should the ban include everyone or make notable exceptions? Where should the line be drawn and should the Region have the final say or should it be left up to each individual municipality to make its own call? The report really does supply all the information necessary for councillors to make an informed vote. By Oct. 18, if at least five of eight municipalities in Durham support the establishment of a regionwide smoking bylaw, it will go ahead with full im- plementation scheduled for June 2004. If Durham wants to keep pace with progressive municipalities across the province it will establish a comprehensive smoking bylaw. Down 22.5 per cent between June and July DURHAM —Seasonal factors played a big part in the reduction of sales of single-family dwellings in Durham Region during the month of July, says Patricia Mapplebeck, pres- ident of the Durham Region Real Es- tate Board. There were 593 sales in July, down 22.5 per cent from 727 in June, also down 14 per cent from 677 in July 2001. “It is not unusual for the market to slow during the hot summer months when potential homebuyers are tak- ing holidays,” Ms. Mapplebeck said in a release. Battle brewing over pesticides on your lawn BY TIM FORAN Staff Writer DURHAM – The driest August on record and the second hottest summer in memory have combined to leave many lawns scorched and brown. It may seem odd then that politi- cians will mark their fall session this year with debates over whether homeowners should be allowed to use pesticides to keep those same lawns looking green. In Ottawa, the Senate will resume sitting Sept. 17 and it plans to enter into second read- ing Bill C-53, a proposed new Pest Control Products Act. Two days later, Durham Re- gion’s health committee will review a staff re- port on lawn and garden pesticides, a report which includes survey results outlining local residents’attitude to the chemicals. At the upper level, the federal act essential- ly updates the first Pest Control Act released by Environment Canada in 1969, but critics argue it doesn’t address one significant issue: the non-essential or “cosmetic” use of pesticides on private property. “Though cosmetic pesticide use is a small percentage of overall pesticide application it causes greater human exposure,” the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) argued in a submission to the House of Commons standing committee on health last year. “The proposed act should therefore include a commitment to restrict the use of each pesticide’s home and garden use to public health needs.” CAPE is one of a growing number of orga- nizations calling for politicians to legislate an end to the cosmetic use of pesticides, an um- brella term that refers to chemicals such as her- bicides, fungicides, larvicides and insecticides. Their most cited concern is the possible impact of pesticides on the health of children. In 2000, CAPE, along with the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP) released a paper entitled, ‘Environmental Standard Set- ting & Children’s Health.’The potential health impact on children due to pesticides is “unde- niable,” the groups concluded, citing their re- view of available research. “The data implicated pesticides as inducing damage to children’s immune, endocrine, ner- vous and reproductive systems, as well as con- genital anomalies and cancer,” the OCFP stat- ed in a submission to the Commons standing committee on health earlier this year. There are several reasons for the increased impact of pesticides on children, the groups said, including kids’closeness to the grass and their hand-to-mouth behaviour. A City of Toronto health department report released earlier this year also cautioned of pos- sible environmental impacts of lawn pesti- cides, noting many watersheds receive the chemicals after they drain into the sewers fol- lowing rainstorms. Durham’s health department is not making the same warnings. The staff report instead states existing studies do not adequately draw a cause and effect be- tween pesticides and health issues. Prefer- ring to err on the side of caution though, the report recommends the Region educate its citi- zens on how to reduce the use of chemicals on their lawns and gar- dens. The health depart- ment notes a survey taken this past winter of approximately 400 Durham residents re- vealed more than 70 per cent of the respon- dents who had a lawn or garden used pesticides at least once in 2001. Despite that usage, almost 70 per cent of re- spondents said they would somewhat or strongly support a bylaw banning pesticide use on private property. Such a bylaw is legal, en- vironmental groups believe, because of a 2001 Canadian Supreme Court decision that upheld the Town of Hudson, Quebec’s 1991 vote to ban the cosmetic use of pesticides on private property. Ontario’s municipalities have moved cautiously since that decision, with only the small northern community of Cobalt so far vot- ing to phase in a simi- lar ban. In Durham, none of the Region’s eight municipalities have made a move to re- strict or ban pesticide use on private proper- ty. Many of the mu- nicipalities have in- stead focused their ef- forts on both restrict- ing their own use of chemicals on public lands and distributing information to resi- dents on how they could do the same for their lawns. “I think that’s a normal way to start because (a private property restriction) is a very touchy subject to most people,” says Penny Reid, a spokesman for the Scugog Green Team, which proposed in June that the Township phase out the cosmetic use of pesti- cides on private properties by 2005. The Township chose instead to form a task force this fall to review the issue. Ms. Reid says she understood Scugog council’s deci- sion but felt enough studies have already been looked at by other municipalities to justify a faster ap- proach. “Politics shouldn’t get in the way of health,” she says. The landscaping industry warns a ban would be useless be- cause of the confusing regulations of pesti- cides among Canadian governments. Uxbridge resident Ken Pavely, the Integrat- ed Pest Management (IPM) turf specialist for the industry association Landscape Ontario, maintains the Hudson ban has been ineffective because federal rules still allow lawn and gar- den pesticides to be sold in local stores, even though the Town doesn’t allow them to be spread on private property. “The Town does not enforce the bylaw...so what is the point of having the bylaw?” Mr. Pavely says. “All it does is hurt the lawn care companies.” Since the Hudson decision, a group of land- scaping companies have banded together under the title Envi- ronmental Coalition of Ontario and have started to disseminate petitions for their cus- tomers to sign and send back to local councils, including those in Durham. The petitions argue a re- striction or ban on the cosmetic use of pesti- cides would allow weeds to overrun properties and possi- bly cause allergy and breathing problems for people. “Further- more, I do not want to see my property value drop...” the petition also states in part. Landscape Ontario prefers municipalities encourage residents to use IPM, a lawn care strategy that uses manual techniques such as aeration and over-seeding to keep lawns healthy. Under IPM, pesticides are to be used only when necessary, says Mr. Pavely. The Sierra Club says IPM is just another phrase for business as usual. “The term suggests that they’re using chemicals when necessary but I think that the use of chemicals isn’t necessary,” argues An- drea Peart, a spokesman for the Sierra Club’s Campaign for Pesticide Reduction. She says organic techniques are more time-consuming but are just as effective as pesticides. According to the health department’s sur- vey, only a quarter of respondents used a lawn care company in 2001. However,almost 90 per cent of the time those companies used pesti- cides. The Province’s Ministry of Environment is the regulator of pesticide applicators, but envi- ronmental groups are looking to municipalities to take matters into their own hands. The Canadian Environmental Law Associ- ation (CELA) also argues that Durham, rather than the lower-tier municipalities, should take the initiative and implement a region-wide bylaw. “It won’t make sense to have different municipalities within the same region to have different pesticide bylaws,” explains Theresa McClenaghan, counsel for CELA. Durham Regional staff had said the Hudson court decision only allows its lower-tier mu- nicipalities to pass pesticide bylaws, unless they gave unanimous support for the Region to take responsibility for the issue. Ms. McCle- naghan disagrees, arguing the Province’s new Municipal Act, due to take effect at the start of 2003, allows any municipality to pass a bylaw related to the “health, safety and well being concerns of the inhabitants.” Such a bylaw would be similar to Durham council imposing a Region-wide smoking bylaw, something the health and social services committee is already working on. The smoking bylaw, however, would regu- late smoking in privately owned public places, something that is different than simply private property. Some Durham politicians have said they are also wary of enacting a ban on the use of cer- tain pesticides when the federal government is not stopping the products from being sold. On that point, the Supreme Court apparent- ly had no problem. “Law making and imple- mentation are often best achieved at a local level of government that is not only effective, but also closest to the citizens affected,” the Court said in its Hudson decision. Pickering edges Bradford in provincial select softball final PICKERING —The Pickering squirt boys’select softball team was crowned provin- cial champions after posting a dramatic come- from-behind victory over Bradford in the final at the recent playdowns in Scarborough. The Pickering squirts claimed the champi- onship for 11- and 12-year-olds at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Ontario Provin- cial Fast-Pitch Softball Championship at Guildwood after downing Bradford 13-12. The Pickering squad needed a last-inning rally to pull out the exciting win. Pickering was behind the eight ball early as Bradford led 6-0 after three innings. The local squirts received more bad news as starting pitcher Adam Carson developed a blister on the index finger of his pitching hand from his outstanding pitching in the three previous games of the day and could not continue. The ball was turned over to Daniel Wilkins. Over the next three innings, Bradford only scored three runs, while Pickering was able to plate six runs and make the score much closer at the end of the sixth inning, with Bradford leading 9-6. The final inning for Pickering was its last hope and, although Bradford scored three more runs in their top of the seventh in- ning, Pickering was determined and focused, heading into the bottom of the last inning, but still down by six runs. Five of Pickering first six batters reached base safely to start the seventh. Two runs scored to narrow the gap. Carson then came up with the bases loaded and stroked a three-run triple, closing the gap to one run. With only one out and a runner on third base, Jamie Northern blasted a comebacker to the mound, which scored the tying run and put the win- ning run at first base. Nathan Conway then came to the plate and permitted two pitches to pass, allowing North- ern to steal both second and third bases, putting the winning run on third base with only one out. On the third pitch, Conway drove a solid line-drive double deep into the outfield to score the winning run. Pickering placed first in round-robin play with a 2-1 record and a plus/minus differ- ential of plus-19. The first-place finish meant the team was head- ed to the championship game. The local squirts dropped their first game to Bramalea 4- 3. Pickering, however, bounced back to take Game 2 by a 12-4 score over Bradford. In the final round-robin contest, Pickering faced Newmarket and controlled the game to post a well-deserved 17-5 victory. The Pickering squirt selects enjoyed a strong 2002 season, with an overall record of 19-4. This resulted in three golds, two silvers and one bronze medal at tournaments this year. Although he has been training and compet- ing in triathlon events for the past five years, this is the first time he’s ever competed in an Olympic-distance event. The Freeport Lobsterman Triathlon in Freeport, Maine Sept. 14 consists of a 1,600- metre swim on Casco Bay, a 40-kilometre bike ride along the Freeport coastline and 10-km run, starting at Winslow Park in that city and ending in the village of South Freeport. Deegan said he chose the Freeport event for his Olympic-distance debut for a number of reasons. “The distance, the location and it’s at the end of the year,so I can make sure all the train- ing’s done before I go,” he said. Deegan said the sport, which emphasizes overall fitness and endurance, is simply fun for him. “I’ve done running and swimming before. It’s just the smooth, seamless transition be- tween the sports. It’s hard to explain. Nothing makes me feel the way I do when I cross the finish line,” he said. He made his triathlon debut at a ‘C’ level race in Collingwood in June. It marked his re- turn to the sport after suffering a hamstring in- jury in 2001. The race was merely a test to see if his training was up to snuff. “It was a conditioning race to see where I was at. I accomplished what I wanted to ac- complish. It wasn’t a top finish by any means, but I got a lot out of it,” said Deegan. “It showed me what training is paying off and what I needed to change.” His best finish in a triathlon so far was a third in his class at the Mike Burnwell Memo- rial Triathlon in Welland back in 1999. Deegan said he wants to finish his inaugur- al Olympic-distance triathlon in under three hours, a worthwhile accomplishment by any- one’s standards. “Finishing in under three hours is not an easy thing to do; it’s a lot of ground to cover in under three hours,” he said. “I’d like to finish in the top 20 per cent of the field, but it’ll de- pend on the (calibre of) the field.” Last-inning rally lifts squirts to title ANDREW IWANOWSKI/ News Advertiser photo Michael Deegan will compete in the Olympic-distance Freeport Lobsterman Triathlon in Maine next week. The Panthers posted a 6-4 victory over the Oakville Blades in the open- er of the Ontario Hockey Associa- tion’s seventh annual Pre-Season Kick-Off Tournament in Vaughan, which began Thursday night. Pickering fell behind 3-0 early in the contest, but scratched back to tie the game 3-3 after two periods. The Blades, however, would regain the lead, but the Panthers replied with three consecutive third-period goals to close the scoring. No scoring details were available. Panthers’ head coach Jim Wilson notes his charges didn’t win the game as much as Oakville lost it with its persistent chippy play in the con- test. All told, the Blades were tabbed for three ejections, four misconducts and at least 10 stick-violation penal- ties. The Panthers took full advan- tage with three power-play goals. “Our boys absorbed it and did their best to avoid retaliation. We were impressed with how they re- sponded under pressure,” says Wil- son. The Oshawa-based au- tomaker experienced a 13.4- per cent increase in vehicle sales last month, compared to the same month in 2001. In fact, August was a record month for truck sales. “August was an incredible month for GM Canada deal- ers and retailers,” said Marc Comeau, vice president of sales, service and marketing. “GM car and truck sales combined were our best Au- gust since 1988, GM cars sales for the month were our best August since 1989, and it was an all-time record Au- gust for GM truck sales.” GM sold 45,790 vehicles in August. Car sales jumped 11 per cent to 23,661 units while truck sales were up 16 per cent to 22,129. Small car sales were up 29 per cent, medium-size pick-up truck sales rose 36 per cent and small sport utility vehicle sales soared 84 per cent. The Buick Century, made in Oshawa, saw its sales jump 18.8 per cent in August.
