PICKERING ––Norman Ball took his ‘Walk of Hope’through Pickering Thursday
afternoon on his way through Durham Region. Mr. Ball is walking around North
America in a bid to aid poor children. He took the time from his effort to stop and
speak with local school children before resuming his marathon.

City up in

dredging
BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE

PICKERING ––A local coun-
cillor is calling for decisive action
from the City after claiming the
Pickering Harbour Company was
dredging materials out of French-
man’s Bay without proper ap-
provals.
However, harbour representa-
tives say the situation was a simple
misunderstanding they’ve already
worked to correct.
Coun. Mark Holland charged
that the harbour company bull-
dozed sensitive marshlands, erect-
ed high berms around the Coolwa-
ter Farms property at the south end
of Liverpool Road, and was pump-
ing dredge material from Lake On-
tario and Frenchman’s Bay on to
the Coolwater land, all without the
proper permits.

DURHAM —Despite what his detractors may
claim, embattled Regional Councillor Rick Johnson
says he is a conservationist and has been given a clear
mandate by his peers in being re-elected to a fifth
term as chairman of the Central Lake Ontario Con-
servation Authority (CLOCA).
“I’ve received a strong mandate,” Coun. Johnson
said in an interview Friday of his Jan. 15 re-election.
“(CLOCA) has been very successful and become
much more efficient... I think we’re in a good position
to educate the public about the importance of water-
sheds in the Region.”
Coun. Johnson has come under fire from local en-
vironmentalists and is currently facing a lawsuit filed
by the Township of Uxbridge in regards to roads he
bulldozed on Uxbridge-Pickering Town Line and
Sideline 8 in Pickering, clearing a path to his land-
locked piece of property in the area.
After being ordered last month by Pickering coun-
cil to restore the roads to their original state or pay for
the City to do the job, Coun. Johnson struck back,
claiming Town Line is an opened road allowance left
in disrepair by the two municipalities and filed a
countersuit against both the City of Pickering and the
Township of Uxbridge.
As for those who question his commitment to the
environment, he has just one simple answer.
“My track record speaks for itself,” he said. “I am
a conservationist, not one of those extreme environ-
mentalists who try to protect every fly or nurse every
goldfish, but I can live and work with those people.”
Coun. Johnson said he played an important role in
helping collect the $10 million that saved the Altona
Forest in Pickering from clearcutting and develop-

Region works to improve
emergency response times
BY JACQUIE McINNES
Staff Writer
DURHAM ––The need for new ambu-
lance stations in Durham is getting an emer-
gency response from Durham councillors.
Council recently gave approval for a
$1.5-million station to be built in Ajax,
while Wednesday a land purchase for a $1.3-
million south Oshawa station to be built in
2002 was recommended in a joint meeting
of the works and finance committees.
“Locating stations as close as possible to
call-density areas assists significantly in re-
ducing response times,” Rick Armstrong,
Durham’s Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) director told committee members.
Land is currently being purchased for the
Ajax station and construction is expected to
move forward this spring. The new site will
replace the current Harwood Avenue South
station.
If approved by council next week, a land
transfer will be negotiated for a piece of land
owned by the City of Oshawa on Bloor
Street east of Ritson Road.
A third station for Whitby, possibly as
part of a new police headquarters at Ander-
son Street and Taunton Road is also being
considered for construction this year, one
year ahead of schedule.
The proposed Whitby station would be
Durham’s largest at almost 18,000 square-
feet with a proposed price tag of $3.8 mil-
lion.
It would include a 20-foot by 30-foot
paramedic training room, paramedic rest
and change area and would house manage-
ment, administration, the communications
department, spare ambulances and supplies
as well as house the area vehicles.
Plans for the Whitby station have sparked
debate, however. Some councillors raised
concerns over the size of the facility and the
need to move from
the Whitby Hydro site
where ambulances
are currently housed.
Scugog Mayor and
works committee
member Doug Mof-
fatt questioned why
training could not be
done elsewhere and
why supplies could
not be reorganized to
eliminate some of the
space requirements
proposed for the
Whitby facility.
“Rather than creat-
ing a training centre,
rather than trying to
duplicate what’s available or could be avail-
able at a fixed cost at Durham College, why
not put that money elsewhere instead of into
a training centre in Whitby?” he asked.
Mr. Armstrong said removing the training
room component of the project would only
eliminate about 500 square feet so it would
not substantially change the cost. Currently
training is essentially provided free, he said
later in an interview.
There is no cost for instructors for the
majority of training as the courses are led by
paramedics employed by the Region.
Each paramedic, depending on skill level,
must train between 40 to 80 hours a year
through in-servicing, Mr. Armstrong said.
The EMS director noted in the event of a
major disaster “and they do happen” it is
critical to the response time to have supplies
available at a location where there is man-
power to deliver them.
By having the management and adminis-
tration housed in the same building as the
central supply, this could be guaranteed, he
told the committee.
Whitby Councillor and finance commit-
tee member Gerry Emm questioned why the
Whitby facility could not remain at Whitby
Hydro.
It is his understanding the utility would
accommodate extra space requirements for
EMS, he said.
The Whitby Hydro site requires signifi-
cant additional facilities be built if the am-
bulance service is to meet provincial service
standards, Mr. Armstrong said, noting the
Region would not own the land it was in-
vesting on but would have to continue to
lease.
He questioned whether the Hydro site
could in fact effectively accommodate the
EMS requirements.
The joint committee asked for a further
report on the various options available for
the Whitby site before committing to a deci-
sion.
After the Province turned over ambu-
lance services to the Region in 2000, it in-
troduced new regulations for standards of
service, including response times, Mr. Arm-
strong said.
The Region has been working to upgrade
the service to meet the new standards but re-
sponse times are still below where they
should be, said Mr. Armstrong. He said
when ambulance service was turned over by
the Province, the system was not meeting
the new standards.
The new stations are just one more piece
of the puzzle to other initiatives EMS has
been taking to raise Durham’s standards, he
said.
Other initiatives have included paramedic
hiring and upgraded training, upgrading of
vehicles and equipment and expansion of
advanced life support service.
The emergency services department is
also recommending a fourth station be built
in a more central Pickering location.
The Province has recommended a second
station be built in the city but Mr. Armstrong
suggested one more central location north-
east of the current location could accommo-
date the needs of all of Pickering.
Other ambulance stations in Durham in-
clude a second Oshawa station on Ritson
Road North and stations in Bowmanville,
Port Perry, Uxbridge and Beaverton. Those
stations do not require significant upgrading
or relocation, Mr. Armstrong said.

DURHAM —Ontario Power
Generation (OPG) is laying off
approximately 2,000 employees
over the next two years, but
Durham Region will see a “net
increase” in jobs.
The utility will relocate nu-
clear-related head office person-
nel to Durham, where it operates
the Pickering and Darlington nu-
clear generating stations.
“The thought is a lot (of em-
ployees) here (at head office in
Toronto) spend a lot of time
there,” OPG spokesman Ted
Gruetzner said in an interview.
“It’s more efficient to be where
they do the bulk of their work.
There will be a net increase in
jobs in Durham Region because
we’re moving the head office.”
As for how many will be mov-
ing to Durham, “the number has-
n’t been determined,” Mr. Gruet-
zner noted.
OPG announced a restructur-
ing plan Wednesday that will see
about 17 per cent of its workforce
of 12,000 let go.
The layoffs will be done
equally over each of the next two
years.
The layoffs are “part of an
overall process we’ve been trend-
ing to in the last few years,” said
Mr. Gruetzner, adding the utility
is operating fewer facilities.
“The number needed in corpo-
rate support is declining corre-
spondingly,” he said.
Last year, OPG leased the
Bruce nuclear facility to Bruce
Power, a British company. Also,
OPG is moving to shed its Lake-
view, Lennox, Thunder Bay and
Atikokan fossil-fuel plants, and
the four Mississagi River hydro-
electric stations.
“With a decline in the number
of facilities, there’s a decline in
the number to operate them,” Mr.
Gruetzner said.
The energy market is opening
up in May and the provincial gov-
ernment has ordered OPG to
make way for competitors.
As to where the layoffs will
come, Mr. Gruetzner said, “It’s
hard to say.
“The first offer is a severance
package. You’ll see people go
from various locations.
“There won’t be operating
staff affected too much. We still
have to maintain our commitment
to the environment.”
OPG expects the restructuring
to cost about $400 million.

Pickering councillor leads CLOCA
ment, and voted against develop-
ment on the shores of the Rouge
River, which was eventually al-
lowed by the Ontario Municipal
Board.
“I have a clear record of not
supporting clearcutting and dev-
astation,” he said.
Coun. Johnson said the law-
suits in no way interfere with his
ability to be an effective CLOCA
chairman.
He added his re-election, in
which he defeated Scugog
Mayor Doug Moffatt, who re-
mains vice-chairman of the au-
thority for a fifth term, is an in-
dication of his strong environ-
mental track record and showed
he has the support of his peers.
Looking to the near future he
said issues coming out of the
Walkerton inquiry and the new
Oak Ridges Moraine Protection
Act could give local conserva-
tion authorities more responsi-
bilities and increase their activi-
ties.
He is also looking to the
provincial Seaton Lands in north
Pickering as an emerging oppor-
tunity to protect environmentally
sensitive lands and stop urban
sprawl.
“With the continued support
of our municipalities, increased
emphasis on environmental is-
sues by the Province and the
continued co-operation with
other environmental agencies,
CLOCA can look forward to a
productive 2002,” he said.

Harbour company
vows to restore area
“It’s time this council
takes a tough stance against
the Pickering Harbour Com-
pany, a firmer stance,” he
said at council Monday
night.
Jim Lucas, a local devel-
oper and agent for the Pick-
ering Harbour Company, ad-
mitted they were dredging
the bay, but said the harbour
company assumed pumping
the material onto the Cool-
water property was permit-
ted since it had submitted a
plan to the Toronto and Re-
gion Conservation Authority
(TRCA) and has been dredg-
ing the lake for over 25
years, pumping on to another
property on the east spit of
the bay.
“We have a permit to
dredge the bay,” he said.
“This is just a misunder-
standing... we’ve done noth-
ing illegal and nothing harm-
ful.”
City council supported
Coun. Holland’s motion call-
ing for the TRCA to pursue
action against the harbour
company and demanded it
return the property to its
prior state.
However, Mr. Lucas said
representatives from the har-
bour company had already
stopped the dredging and
met with TRCA officials ear-
lier in the day, agreeing to re-
store the property.

Planning for Success
Where does time go? Ask
a 13 year old why they are
rushing to finish a project, and
the answer may be that they
were on the phone with a
friend or that hockey took up
several evenings that week.
Students interests and obliga-
tions increase as they get older
making time management a
critical factor for success.
By taking responsibility
for their learning and manag-
ing time, students can balance
both personal and academic
activities. The fundamental
tool is a comprehensive agen-
da.
The keys to an effective agen-
da involve the following:
1)Record recurring tasks
and due dates (i.e. every
Thursday at 8:30 p.m. band
practices, Journal every
Friday).
2)Be detailed when log-
ging homework to include the
subject and the requirements,
(i.e. Math questions 3 to 8, page
29) and do it as soon as the
work is assigned to reduce time
wasting later on.
3)Prioritize daily and
weekly assignments, by divid-
ing large tasks into smaller
more manageable segments.
4) Plan for long-term pro-
jects by setting interim goals to
prevent "cramming" and leave
3-5 days prior to the due date
for editing.
5)Allot 20% more time
than expected for projects, to
allow for unforeseen events
such as an unavailable resource
at the library.
6) Schedule time for per-
sonal activities.
7) Schedule a designated
homework time.
8)Use a pencil, so changes
can be made easily.
9)Use a coloured pen for
special events or activities.
10)Highlight completed
tasks.

Municipalities
asked to review
provincial plan
BY JACQUIE McINNES
Staff Writer
DURHAM ––Durham’s
municipalities will be review-
ing a proposed regional plan
to tackle the West Nile Virus,
which arrived in Durham last
summer and is expected to re-
turn this spring with the ar-
rival of the mosquito breed-
ing season.
“Subject to feedback from
area municipalities the Re-
gion will take the lead on sur-
veillance for West Nile Virus
and communication (to the
public) on West Nile Virus,”
says Dr. Robert Kyle,
Durham’s medical officer of
health.
The Durham Health De-
partment has created a re-
sponse plan to co-ordinate ef-
forts between the health de-
partment and area municipal-
ities to take a proactive ap-
proach to reducing the chance
for the virus to take hold in
Durham this coming summer.
The virus is carried by mos-
quitoes and passed primarily
to birds - in this area, crows
and blue jays - but it can be
passed to humans as well.
The key to reducing the in-
cidence of the disease is con-
trol of the mosquito popula-
tion and, for residents, pre-
vention of mosquito bites
when possible, says Dr. Kyle.
The health department is
recommending area munici-
palities would be responsible
for reviewing their storm
water management areas,
holding ponds and other areas
on municipal land that make
ideal mosquito breeding
grounds. As well, through
municipal bylaws, private
property owners with stag-
nant water on site could be re-
quired to address the prob-
lem, he says. If necessary,
municipalities would also be
responsible for pesticide ap-
plications to control the mos-
quito population. “The use of
chemical pesticide measures
is a last resort,” says Dr. Kyle.
“The first response is for res-
idents to protect themselves
from mosquito bites and to
reduce mosquito breeding
sites.”
The Region’s role will be
to continue to collect dead
birds, operate a dead bird-
sighting hotline and monitor
the mosquito population. The
Region began the surveil-
lance program last spring due
to reports the virus was mak-
ing its way north along the
US east coast.
Testing of dead birds and
of mosquitoes for the virus is
conducted at two universities
and at a federal laboratory in
Winnipeg. The provincial
government is expected to
pay for testing.
Last year five birds col-
lected in Durham Region
tested positive for the virus.
No human cases of West Nile
Virus were diagnosed in
Durham but in the United
States there were 54 human
cases and five deaths attrib-
uted to the West Nile Virus.
Municipalities are being
asked to respond with com-
ments on the plan to the
health department. In Clar-
ington, where the report was
referred to staff, Councillor
Charlie Trim, a regional
health committee member,
noted the municipality should
not only take a look at hold-
ing ponds and other areas
where mosquito breeding
could be occurring but should
advise subdivision developers
as well.
“Holding ponds breed
mosquitoes left, right and
centre. When we create these
next to homes we could be
creating our own downfall,”
he said. The health depart-
ment will be attending a
provincial meeting in March
to finalize plans for this year’s
program, Dr. Kyle says.

“Hi, I’m Tila MacDonald. I shed 35
pounds in 4 easy months with hypno-
sis! My dress size quickly plunged
from a plump 14 to a sleek 4 and it
was effortless! My weight melted off
at an average three pounds a week!
This is my true story... I will reveal
how I lost my weight... Why I’m con-
vinced my success is permanent... And
why I think hypnosis can help you,
too!”
By: Tila MacDonald
I had been overweight for ten years.
After I turned 40, my weight started
creeping up every year. I was unhap-
py and disgusted with myself. No
matter what I did, I couldn’t lose my
weight. Food seemed to have some
strange control over me. I couldn’t get
past a bakery without loading up on
breads and pastries.
I knew that my health was at risk.
I’d visit my doctor twice a month or
more just for reassurance.
I attended diet workshops and
tried a variety of diets on my own. I
even tried those chalky shakes.
Nothing ever worked. I had become a
yo-yo dieter.
I hid my weight with
bulky jackets and loose
clothing. By the time I had
my first grandchild, I had
all but given up. I was mor-
tified to know that I was
going to be in photographs.
I was miserable about
my appearance and my
emotions were out of con-
trol. Negative thoughts and
feelings were controlling
me...at the bottom of it all
was my weight.
Discovery
I read about Positive
Changes Hypnosis in the
newspaper. I looked at it and
then set it aside. I was skepti-
cal. It all seemed too good to
be true. Six months later, I saw
a person I recognized in
the ad. I thought that if
hypnosis could work
for her, maybe it
could help me,
too. I called
and made
an
appointment
for my free hypnosis
screening.
My screening
was easy and
fun.
There was
no pres-
sure.
Everything was explained
to me and the fee was rea-
sonable. I knew that I needed
to change myself from the
inside. I signed up that day.
Results
I noticed an immediate
change in my behavior. I took off
8 pounds my first week! It was easy!
I simply relaxed and listened to my
hypnotist’s voice. I never used to
drink water. I now enjoy drinking
water every day. I used to eat a lot of
sugar. No more! I eat healthier foods
and enjoy them. Hypnosis helped me
to eliminate cravings, food binges and
poor food choices. I go through the
bakery and I am no longer tempted by
the breads and pastries. I shop for
food more effectively.
Best of all, I never feel deprived.
I enjoy my life more and have energy
to spare. All of my old negative feel-
ings, worry and anxiety are gone. I’m
in control again.
In four short months I melted off
my entire 35 lbs. My waist is a dra-
matic four inches smaller!
People now call me
“Skinny.” And it’s true!
Today I am a slender
118 lbs. and I owe it all
to Positive Changes
Hypnosis.
Healthy
Benefits
I
marvel at
the many
unexpected
benefits
that I’ve
experi-
enced
with
the
Positive
Changes
Hypnosis program. I deal with
negative people much better. I no
longer have panic attacks. I am more
confident. My irritable bowel prob-
lems are gone and I no longer need to
carry antacids. My doctor was
amazed at my progress. In fact, he’s
been joking with me that I’ll soon put
him out of business with my improved
health.
The New Me!
There are no
words that can
express the dif-
ference in how I
feel. I love the
new me! I used
to avoid mirrors.
Now I’m happy with my reflection. I
even love to pose for the camera.
People at work have noticed that
I walk and talk differently. There is a
serenity about me that I didn’t have
before. They say that I look young and
vibrant. It’s fun to get so many com-
pliments!
I think the Positive Changes
Hypnosis program is worth twice the
price for the benefits I have received.
I have lost weight, gained positive
feelings, increased my self-confi-
dence and improved my health dra-
matically. I don’t feel that constant
need to be reassured by my doctor
because I know that my health is
great. These are the reasons I recom-
mend Positive Changes to people
every day. I am still amazed by the
positive side effects of hypnosis!
My Recommendation
I am convinced that my results
are permanent. I have not put on a sin-
gle ounce since I started the Positive
Changes program. I know that the yo-
yo syndrome is over for good. In fact,
I have kept my weight off for six easy
months!
My recommendation to you is
this, give Positive Changes Hypnosis
a call. Schedule your complimentary
hypnosis screening and evaluation. I
know you’ll be as impressed as I am.
You’ll meet caring people who are
genuinely concerned about your hap-
piness. Best of all, their fees are low
and the guarantee lets you try the pro-
gram at no risk.
Think about it, if you don’t call,
your life will probably remain the
same and you will have missed out on
what could have been. I urge you to
pick up your telephone and call now.
“My life is forever
changed!”

Much has been said in recent
weeks about the life of Irene Kock, a
well-known and well-respected envi-
ronmentalist and anti-nuclear activist
in Durham Region who was killed in
a recent car crash.
Every word I’ve read since, every
conversation I’ve had, has served to
reinforce my belief that Irene was, in-
deed, an important voice in Durham
Region.
Late last year, News Advertiser
readers would have found Irene in top
form when she referred once again to
Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG)
environmental assessment for the
idled ‘A’ side nuclear reactors as a
whitewash.
Irene never shrank from confronta-
tion when it came to environmental or
nuclear issues that arose on her watch,
but she always expressed her views
articulately, professionally and pas-
sionately.
Irene and Dave Martin, who dis-
solved their Durham Nuclear Aware-
ness group to join forces with the
much larger Sierra Club of Canada,
made a formidable team, especially
when it came to nuclear power.
We didn’t always agree, but both
Dave and Irene never held that against
us, nor, to my knowledge, did they
ever cast cheap aspersions against
their nuclear foes, namely those deci-
sion-makers at OPG’s Pickering Nu-
clear Generating Station.
You could always count on Irene to
stick to the issues, and present her
case with compelling language and
clear views on how she thought things
should be.
I was struck, too, by the sincerity
and sympathy expressed by those
same people at OPG who often found
themselves on the receiving end of
Irene’s well-prepared rants. Clearly,
her tragic death has had an impact on
people she may not have necessarily
been friendly with, but who deeply re-
spected her work.
Wouldn’t it be something if OPG
could find a way to help Durham Re-
gion citizens remember Irene and her
important work forever?
Wouldn’t it be something if OPG’s
new commitment to green energy and
Irene’s years of work could be recog-
nized together?
The new wind generator set up last
year is a perfect and enduring symbol
of Irene and her work for green ener-
gy sources. It’s tall and graceful and
commands one’s attention. It’s on 24
hours each day, working quietly and
efficiently. It is a new and, hopefully,
lasting symbol of our ongoing efforts
at harnessing energy alternatives.
Did you know that OPG held a
contest and is currently in the process
of choosing a winner of the name-
that-wind-turbine contest?
I’ve got a suggestion: Call it the
Irene Kock Memorial Wind Turbine.

Hiking council
salaries continues
to hurt taxpayers
To the editor:
Re: ‘Council raises can’t be justified,’let-
ter to the editor, Dec. 19.
I agree totally and ask: When will
politicians learn the less money con-
sumers have left after taxes, the less there
is left to buy durable goods such as autos,
appliances, etc., which in turn create jobs.
The sad fact is we are losing jobs big
time in Pickering and Ajax. Related to the
above is the costly and intolerable dupli-
cation of services in Pickering and Ajax.
Surely if hydro operations and police de-
partments can amalgamate, why not all
departments? Look at the savings for be-
leaguered taxpayers in these difficult
times.
Suffice it to say, we have layers of bu-
reaucrats at the top we just don’t need. I
would beg the good offices of Pickering-
Ajax-Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker to speak
to Municipal Affairs Minister Chris
Hodgson on behalf of Pickering and Ajax
taxpayers.

Durham Region is suddenly hit with a 12-centimetre snow-
fall. Whose responsibility is it to clear that snow from the
thousands of kilometres of roads throughout our vast region?
It might surprise you to know there is a plan in place, but,
and this is where our regional councillors come in, it may not
be the most efficient, sensible, tax-saving plan available.
For instance, in Oshawa and Whitby, local maintenance
crews handle all roads including regional. In the rest of
Durham, the plowing is split up with municipalities handling
local streets, avenues and courts and the Region hitting the
pavement on its own roads. It can get confusing.
Straightening out the mess, making it all more streamlined
and sensible is the job of the Durham ‘Who Does What’ com-
mittee.
As Deloitte and Touche consulting firm spokesman Gord
Glover told a regional committee this week, “Ultimately the
goal of the Who Does What committee is to provide more ef-
ficient and effective service at less cost to the taxpayer.”
The consultants dumped a 47-page executive summary on
committee members this past Wednesday (the actual report is
about 300 pages) and council is expected to discuss the report
at its meeting Wednesday.
The whole idea of saving taxpayers money and clearing up
regional versus municipal responsibilities, especially now that
amalgamation talk is dead, is honourable. Of course the deci-
sions have to be the right ones.
Concerns over turf — Oshawa was the only municipality
that refused to take part in the second stage of the study —
aren’t the way to go. Taxpayers need to know the entire Region
and its eight municipalities are working together for the best
solution for all.
Many other examples are up for discussion in the report in-
cluding: regional roads maintenance, depot rationalization,
building uses and consolidation, shared purchasing, service
consolidation (as in less red tape for developers or engineers),
waste management, vehicles and equipment purchasing.
A similar process has taken place at the provincial level
with the Province eager to avoid duplication and determined to
save taxpayers’ money with its regional and municipal part-
ners.
Only by working together to find the best delivery system
for services will our elected representatives be truly doing the
job we’ve given them.
Let’s figure out
who does what...
And then Region, municipalities
must work together to find efficiencies

Staff Writer
DURHAM — For a school that barely
made it through the 1990s, Oshawa’s Central
Collegiate and Vocational Institute is not just
surviving, it’s thriving.
Central’s Career Academy for Hire Educa-
tion last year was awarded the prestigious
Yves Landry Award for outstanding youth ap-
prenticeship program in a Canadian high
school. This school-within-a-school focuses
on preparing high school students for careers
by providing apprenticeship opportunities in
the cook, construction, hairstylist, motive
power and precision metal-cutting trades.
These are not students who can’t cut it in
school, but pupils who have a better idea than
most of what they want to do when they leave
high school, said Al Bender, academy co-or-
dinator.
“They have a particular focus, they need to
have that focus to make a commitment,” he
said in an interview. “We’re not the default
school that if you can’t make it in the acade-
mic program you come to Central.”
A fourth-year apprentice in machine trades
uses calculus to do his job, he noted, adding
such students are capable of university, but not
interested.
Mr. Bender said none of the academy pro-
grams “lead to a dead end” since students at
the same time are working towards their high
school diploma and can pursue other opportu-
nities if they wish.
What makes the academy unique is that it’s
for students from across Durham.
“Students applying to the local Ontario
Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) com-
mittee come from their home school to Cen-
tral; it’s a regional program,” said Mr. Bender,
noting Central students don’t have an edge
over their peers in getting into academy pro-
grams.
Apart from apprenticeships, students can
take a fitness instructor certification program
taught by Grace Andrews, one of only seven
specialty master trainers with Reebok Canada
in the country. Every program the academy
offers or will offer (an early childhood educa-
tion apprenticeship training program is
planned) begins with consultation with rele-
vant employers to determine if there are op-
portunities available in the careers the pro-
gram is designed to help prepare students for.
Paul Rouen said it makes a “huge” differ-
ence for students to receive work training be-
fore they leave high school.
The owner of Rouen Tool and Mould Ltd.
in Ajax is a member of the local apprentice-
ship committee (LAC) for the academy’s pre-
cision metal-cutting program.
“Most kids getting out of high school
today don’t have a clue about what they’re
going to do, there are too many choices,” said
Mr. Rouen.
And he noted that because students make a
commitment to the program, it offers a mea-
sure of security to employers.
“I don’t have to worry that the kid’s going
to desert me in the first six months because he
doesn’t like it,” said Mr. Rouen.
Grade 11 student Ryan Elder came to Cen-
tral from Dr. F.J. Donevan Collegiate Institute
in Oshawa and is enrolled in the precision
metal-cutting program.
“Donevan doesn’t have any shops and
that’s what I’m into, working with my hands,”
he explained.
His timing was perfect as Central set up the
manufacturing machine shop just last year,
after Durham District School Board trustees
in late 2000 approved $122,000 in one-time
funding. The money was used to buy equip-
ment such as engine lathes, precision-measur-
ing devices, boring equipment and power
tools. Ryan had to be preapproved in an inter-
view with the LAC.
“It was tough because when I went to the
interview I didn’t know much about precision
metal,” he said. “They asked me why I want-
ed to be a machinist, why I would be the best
person for the job.”
Ryan said he “didn’t try to make stuff up”
in the interview, simply telling the committee
he liked building things, working on cars and
“getting dirty”.
Ryan said he has so far learned how to op-
erate the machines in Central’s shop and even
how to make some repairs to them in his in-
troductory general machining course, which
is open to all Central students.
Next semester, Ryan’s OYAP pre-work-
place training begins, as students from across
Durham attend Central all day until May 17,
working in the machine shop most of the day
with part of the time spent studying mathe-
matics and applying it as it relates to their
field.
After becoming a registered apprentice in
early April, Ryan and other OYAP students
will begin their one-month co-operative work
placement in May. In Grade 12 it’s on to
Durham College for two days a week with the
remainder of the time spent on the job.
Ryan sees himself one day working in or
owning a machine shop, and is encouraged
when he scans newspaper classified ads and
sees that machinists, mould makers and mill-
wrights are all in demand.
“I just find it interesting because you learn
new stuff every day,” he said of his program.
Former Port Perry High School student Ja-
clyn Pottery is learning to cut and manipulate
hair, not metal, at Central.
“My cosmetology teacher told me about
Central so I got more information about it,”
said the Grade 12 student.
Central is Ministry of Education-approved
to deliver the hairstylist certification program.
Students attend classes in the first semester
and a community placement in the second. Ja-
clyn will soon find out where she’s going for
her placement, but until then she described
Central’s well-equipped salon as “really
good”.
“Two-and-a-half years ago we gutted this
room and renovated it,” said Mr. Bender,
pointing out the walk-behind sinks and 19
styling stations on a tour.
Those who are approved by the hairstylist
LAC follow a structured program that will see
them earn a high school diploma and com-
plete hairstylist certification. Students who
complete the required hours of workplace ap-
prenticeship training are ready to complete the
necessary certificate of qualification exams
and earn their certificate.
Jaclyn’s goal is to become a hairstylist.
“I’ve always liked it, ever since I can re-
member,” she said.
Mr. Bender said provincial destreaming in
the early 1990s, declining enrolment and the
splitting of one provincial ministry into two
— the education ministry and ministry of
training, colleges and universities — all
threatened what was envisioned for Central.
The final threat came when the school was
slated to close in June 1999 in the public
board’s first system-wide accommodation and
school improvement plan.
“We had a framework we were working
with and we had a lot of pieces in the box, but
they just weren’t assembled together,” he said,
noting business leaders were wary of making
any kind of commitment, invariably saying,
‘we hear you’re closing’, at meetings.
When the accommodation plan was ap-
proved, sparing Central, it was full steam
ahead. Still, there were grumblings the school
was “stepping out of its boundaries,” even try-
ing to steal college students.
“It’s not the case,” said Mr. Bender. “We’re
trying to get more kids to go into apprentice-
ships.”
The Yves Landry Award, he said, brought
“national recognition” to the program, now an
example for the entire country.

Secondary
Academy &Today a high school diploma is very
important. From getting that first job to qual-
ifying for college or university, it’s a neces-
sary step to success.
But for many people studying in a large
classroom in a traditional high school envi-
ronment is difficult. The Durham Secondary
and Middle School Academy offers students
an alternative or a complement to their cur-
rent high school studies.
The philosophy of the school is that stu-
dents learn best in a safe environment that
challenges them with high academic and
behavioural standards.
At the Durham Secondary and Middle
School Academy, learning is far more than an
acquisition of facts but involves understand-
ing concepts, developing thinking skills, and
becoming a self-confident, creative person.
Their program offers credit courses fol-
lowing the requirements of the Ontario
Ministry of Education and Training leading
to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Students can take advantage of flexible
time-tabling which includes:
•A traditional semester format with
two per school year.
• A condensed ten week semester for-
mat with four per year.
• There are four entry points through-
out the year with new courses beginning in
September, November, February and April.
Students will also enjoy a low
pupil/teacher ratio with a maximum class
size of eight. They will also have continual
assessment and feedback on their progress.
All of the courses are taught by quali-
fied teachers who are specialists in the sub-
jects they teach. They work closely with each
student, using teaching strategies suited to
their individual learning styles.
“Success Builds Success” is the motto of
the Durham Secondary Academy underscor-
ing their determination to provide each stu-
dent with the opportunity to succeed.

Weight Loss Through Hypnosis
By Margaret Reid
So you've tried all the 'diets', but you're still not losing weight? If the
cause of your excess weight is only due to eating the wrong foods or lack of
exercise, the 'diet' would work. There are some very good diets available. They
teach you how to choose your food wisely, and educate you on the different
nutritional values...but still you have a weight problem?
So what now? This is where hypnosis can come to the rescue...but only
if you are serious about achieving your dream weight. Hypnosis takes you
where you want to be, just by using the power of the sub-conscious mind. Your
sub-conscious mind is a wonderful thing. It's the sneaky little voice that tells
you to overindulge...life's just stomped on you yet again and you deserve com-
pensation...so into your mind comes the picture of your favourite food. In full,
living colour. You can see it, smell it, taste it. Does that sound right?
So how does hypnosis help? When life hits a bump, what causes you to
reach for that special food is an 'emotion', be it anger, frustration, grief, or a feel-
ing of something lacking your life. A feeling of happiness and joy, completion
of a job well done, can also be the time that you indulge. Using hypnosis, your
therapist can help you find the underlying cause that
makes you turn to food for either compensation or
reward. Regression under hypnosis is often effective
in ferreting out causes that are so repressed you have
no conscious memory of them. Sometimes the simple
understanding of the cause can result in the elimina-
tion of the problem.
A good hypnotherapy program for weight
loss should involve several specific elements; a good
one-on-one relationship with a registered hypnother-
apist. The client as a whole person will be evaluated -
not just their 'problem'. The clients self-esteem and
self-confidence will be supported and increased. The
attitude towards food, especially your favourite
indulgence will be altered to reduce the conceived
importance of food as it relates to feelings of well
being,
So next time life stomps on you what then? Do
you deserve to indulge...possible. Will you...probably
not. Because you are now on your way to your dream
weight, your self-esteem is high. You recognize your
emotional triggers and know how to deal with them,
You are so self-confident that no 'sneaky little voice'
can tell you when you deserve to indulge. You make
your own decisions based on a whole different point of view.
Alpha Change Hypnosis is located at 158 Harwood Ave. South, Suite
207, Ajax. For more information call Margaret Reid at (905) 428-1091.

Health department
confirms first three cases
BY JACQUIE McINNES
Staff Writer
DURHAM —If you thought you
had the flu over Christmas, chances are
you didn’t. True influenza has just
made an appearance in Durham Re-
gion, says Donna Reynolds.
“Across Canada we are seeing
lower rates” of influenza this year, said
Durham’s associate medical officer of
health, adding this season’s strain
“may not be as transmittable” as some
in previous years. As well, she added,
“The higher rates of vaccination, we
hope, are influencing the number of
cases we’re seeing in Ontario.”
The Durham Region Health Depart-
ment confirmed the first three cases of
influenza in the region just last week,
about a month later than usual. Both
influenza A and B were confirmed in
the eastern part of Durham, she said.
“Typically it enters Durham in
about December and peaks in January
and February,” said Dr. Reynolds, who
added cases can continue to flow over
into early spring.
Therefore, she said, it’s still not too
late to get a flu shot and it is an espe-
cially good idea for anyone at high risk
of complications from flu including the
elderly, young children and people of
all ages with chronic medical condi-
tions, including asthma. The only time
it isn’t worthwhile to get a flu shot is
when you have already had all three
strains the vaccine inoculates against,
she said. Flu shots must be taken annu-
ally to be effective, she added.
In the fall of 2000, Ontario intro-
duced a universal flu shot program al-
lowing residents to get the vaccine free
of charge.
Last season about 34 per cent of the
general population and 35 per cent of
those at high risk of complications
from flu received the shot, Dr.
Reynolds said.
So if it wasn’t the flu you had in re-
cent weeks, what was it? Dr. Reynolds
suggested it could have been a copycat
virus that is much like the flu but for
which there is no vaccine. And if a
runny nose and sore throat were the
main symptoms, “chances are it was
probably a cold”.
The symptoms of influenza include:
fever, headache, muscle ache, weak-
ness and can include a cough. Vomiting
is not a symptom of influenza, said Dr.
Reynolds; that is a different virus com-
monly known as the stomach flu.
If you do find yourself or someone
in your family struck by the flu or a
flu-like virus, the best medicine is lots
of rest, plenty of liquids, medication
for relief of the symptoms and avoid-
ance of alcohol and tobacco, according
to the National Centre for Infectious
Diseases.
Because the flu is a virus, antibi-
otics are not effective. Never give As-
pirin to a child or teenager without
consulting a doctor.
Alternatives such as acetaminophen
(such as Tylenol or Tempra) or Ibupro-
fen (such as Motrin or Advil) will help
relieve aches and fever. If symptoms
worsen or become different than ex-
pected, a trip to the doctor may be in
order.

Pickering tweens
bridesmaids twice
PICKERING —The Pickering
tween ‘AA’ ringette team put forth ster-
ling efforts to earn silver at two recent
tournaments.
The tweens took part in a huge
tournament in Whitby last weekend at
the Iroquois Park Sports Centre. En-
trants from Gloucester, Ottawa, Missis-
sauga, Ajax, Whitby and Pickering com-
peted.
Pickering won four consecutive
games before dropping a meaningless
contest to a talented Gloucester squad.
The tweens advanced to the final and
lost to the same Gloucester team al-
though no score was submitted.
Meanwhile, Pickering also compet-
ed in a Cambridge tournament. Picker-
ing posted two wins over Waterloo and
another over Mississauga to earn a
spot in the final against the host Cam-
bridge squad. Despite controlling the
play for most of the game, Pickering
ended up on the wrong end of a 4-2
score.
Team members are Katie Foden,
Samantha Puddister, Maryanne Stover,
Brittany Feher, Jodie Hannen, Christine
Macdonald, Christine Langford, Krista
Keberer, Leandra Telefoglou, Nicole
Blake, Lindsey Huibers, Brianne
Jamieson and Jennifer Michalicka.
Attack comes up short
in Barrie volleyball tourney
DURHAM —Durham Attack boys’
volleyball teams fared well at the Ban-
tam Boys’ Provincial Cup tournament in
Barrie recently.
The Attack sent three teams —
players ages 12 and 13 in their first year
of competitive volleyball — to the event,
all placing in the top seven of the 12-
club tourney.
The best local result came from the
Attack Black squad that finished in sec-
ond place. Attack Black defeated Toron-
to West 2-0 (25-21, 25-19) in the semifi-
nals. In the final, however, Attack Black
was defeated by Bronte Beach 2-0 (25-
17, 25-9).
The Durham Attack White finished
in sixth position with a 3-3 record in
pool ‘C’. Meanwhile, Red finished sev-
enth overall with a 3-3 record in pool ‘A’.
Bank can't handle Mario’s
AJAX —East Side Mario's shifted
into high gear in the second half to
edge the Bank of Montreal in Ajax
Ladies' Basketball League play
Wednesday night.
The bankers held a one-point
lead at the interval, but Mario's used
its running game to take the lead in
the second half en route to a 46-41
victory.
Engrid Carmichael Johnson netted
15 points for East Side, while Lana
Letourneau scored 13 for the bank.
In the second game of the night,
Et Tu Caesar's held off Select Food
Products for a close 32-28 victory.
Lori Fleming was the high scorer
for Caesar's with eight points; Erinn
Lynch replied with 12 for Select.

Dunbarton shakes
off loss to win
battle with St. Mary
PICKERING —After blowing big leads twice, the
Dunbarton High School Spartans bent but didn’t break on
the hardwood against the St. Mary Catholic Secondary
School Monarchs Wednesday afternoon.
In their first Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics
(LOSSA) league match since last year’s final, the defend-
ing champion Spartans held off the hard-charging Mon-
archs in the final stages to post a 63-60 win in senior boys’
basketball play at St. Mary.
After trailing by as many as 14 points, the Monarchs
fought back to make it a one-point ball game, 28-27, at
halftime. St. Mary’s shooting, however, went cold in the
first five minutes of the third quarter and they promptly
fell behind by 12. Once again, the Monarchs battled back
to tie the contest with 30 seconds remaining, but the Spar-
tans turned several St. Mary miscues into points in the
closing seconds.
“We kept putting ourselves in a hole,” noted St. Mary
coach Mike Gordensky. “If we hadn’t gone into such long
scoring droughts it could have been a different game. As it
was, I was proud of the way we kept battling back.”
The victory upped the Spartans’ LOSSA league record
to 6-1, rebounding from a less-than-stellar 74-62 loss to
the Pickering High School Trojans at the Ajax school last
week. Dunbarton’s overall record improves to 14-4.
Dunbarton assistant coach Jeff Maharaj noted the vic-
tory was an important one to get back on track after
slumping last week in absorbing the loss to Pickering. His
charges’ ability to break down the press and zone defence
doled out by the Monarchs was the biggest factor in the
win.
“We were patient and we worked the ball around,” ex-
plained Maharaj, assistant to head coach Everton Clennon.
Maharaj said his team was “pretty excited” to record
the win over their chief city rivals from St. Mary as it
marked the first time in three years the Spartans have won
on the Monarchs’ home court.
Adrian Johnson was the high scorer for the Spartans
with 16 points. Other Dunbarton players in double figures
were Kemar Munroe with 15, Nathan Graham with 14 and
Mike Filinski with 11.
David Ferdinand netted a game-high 22 points for the
Monarchs.
The Spartans will play in Toronto at Scarborough’s
Centennial College tournament this weekend. Meanwhile,
the Monarchs are getting set to host the first News Adver-
tiser Classic, featuring eight of the top senior boys’ bas-
ketball teams from Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area,

Second-place Pickering
club beats Oshawa,
ties Whitby, Aurora
PICKERING — The Pickering
Panthers minor bantam select hockey
team posted a win, two ties and a loss
in its most recent four-game league
swing.
The Panthers engaged in a home-
and-home series with the Whitby
Wildcats, posting a 3-3 draw and 2-1
loss.
Closing out the two-game series at
home, the Panthers held a 3-2 lead
until the dying seconds when Whitby
scored the equalizer. Taylor Gray, An-
drew Dowdell and Joey Paul scored,
with assists to Justin Bruce, Matthew
Evans and Paul.
In the opener of the series in Whit-
by, the Pickering bantams opened the
scoring, but the Wildcats scratched out
two goals to earn the victory. Andrew
Paradis scored the lone Panthers’ goal,
assisted by Ryan Lindsay and Justin
Papizewski.
Against the Oshawa Timberwolves,
the Panthers devoured their opponents
4-2. Brad Downton, Chris Rotolo,
Dowdell and Evans scored, while An-
drew Goldsmith, Paradis, Gray,
Dowdell and Evans drew assists.
At home against the Aurora Tigers,
the Panthers skated to a 2-2 draw. Al-
though pounding the opposing netmin-
der with 30 shots, the bantams couldn’t
capitalize. Paradis and Gray scored,
with assists to Derek Savoie, Paul and
Evans.
The club is currently tied for second
in its division.
Adding to the success of the team
were Derek Westlake, Leland Street,
Michael Lafferton, Daniel Thrift, Kyle
Fredericks and goaltenders Matt Mc-
Mulkin and Mike Johnson.

Unfortunately I am not talking about the weather. There is some
strange things brewing in the financial market. We are being told that
the recession is near an end, which is a nice way to say that interest
rates are on the way up. Today's news reported that the unemployment
rate is higher than predicted, (8%) this may keep rates down for a
while, but don't hold your breath. The housing market continues to be
strong, with demand still exceeding supply.
Some Credit Misconception.
The most common situation that arises is, that if you have had problems in the past and have correct-
ed them, is that they will no longer have a negative impact. This is the furthest thing possible from reality.
Although it is absolutely necessary to correct the delinquency, it will be a negative factor on your credit
bureau for a minimum of three years. (With some lenders, 5 to 7 years) The next most common error is shop-
ping around for your financial needs. The first thing a lender does is a credit report (even if your request will
not follow in their lending guidelines). Most lenders assess credit worthiness by a scoring system, and each
inquiry is a 10 point reduction. A secondary factor to this, is that if there are over 3 inquiries in a six month
period the system will automatically decline your application as a credit seeker. No it’s not fair, but it is the
system that the lenders created and follow. Question your lender as to whether your requirements are with-
in their lending guidelines prior to making a formal application.
Why Central Funding Group?
Fast Professional service, with your needs being our primary concern. We look for ways to get your
financial requirements approved, rather than looking for ways to decline you. The best available rates and
terms available in the market. Prime First Mortgages are up to 1% below posted market rates. Second and
third mortgages to 100%of current value. Private mortgage funds are available for those clients that do not
fall under regular lending criteria, at very competitive rates and terms. Consolidations have always been a
specialty.
