the victims were robbed of a
small amount of money and a
gold necklace.
One victim suffered a chipped
tooth and facial injuries after
being punched, while the other

Pickering keeps talks at bay
Governments
working to upgrade
Frenchman’s Bay
harbour entrance
PICKERING —If the
funding is secured and the ap-
provals granted, Frenchman’s
Bay could have a new harbour
entrance within the next two
years, says a Pickering council-
lor.
City councillors and staff
met with federal and provincial
officials Friday to begin discus-
sions on how to best move for-
ward with a project to improve
the entranceway into the bay.
“There was a very strong
level of interest from all parties
present to move this forward,”
said Ward 2 Regional Council-
lor Mark Holland following the
meeting, which was also attend-
ed by representatives from the
Pickering Harbour Company,
the Frenchman’s Bay Yacht
Club, Swan’s Marina, the
Toronto and Region Conserva-
tion Authority (TRCA) and the
federal Department of Fisheries
and Oceans (DFO).
“There was a recognition this
is a project of a great deal of sig-
nificance in terms of the com-
munity and the economic bene-
fits,” Coun. Holland said.
Coun. Holland reported the
restoration is necessary to im-
prove the entrance to the bay be-
cause it is currently difficult for
boaters to navigate due of the
high levels of sedimentation. He
said the channel needs to be
widened and reconfigured in a
way that will reduce the sedi-
mentation.
He added a plan for the pro-
ject has been submitted to the
DFO, which would have to
grant an approval for the
restoration to proceed, as would
the TRCA.
Coun. Holland noted a deci-
sion was made Friday to form a
committee responsible for
spearheading the project. In ad-
dition, he said Pickering-Ajax-
Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker and
her federal counterpart, MP Dan
McTeague, are going to look
into the criteria that needs to be
met to secure provincial and
federal funding for the project,
which would likely cost about
$2 million.
“Clearly both representatives
were very supportive of moving
forward,” Coun. Holland said,
noting the restoration of the en-
trance is “a project we’d want to
see happen within the next two
years.
“The bay used to have 1,500
boats in the summertime,”
Coun. Holland said, noting
there are only a couple of hun-
dred boats in the bay now.
“The current state of the en-
trance is having an obvious im-
pact.”
Kayaker disappears on Frenchman’s Bay
Scarborough man
discovered missing
following dragon
boat practice
PICKERING —Durham
and Toronto police were to
continue searching French-
man’s Bay today for a Scarbor-
ough man presumed drowned
after he went missing during a
weekend outing.
Philbert Verayo, 35, was
among a party of 16 kayakers
on the water Sunday, all mem-
bers of the same dragon boat
racing team that was practising
on the bay in Pickering. He did
not return to shore in the after-
noon with the rest of the group.
“It’s really slow going,”
Durham Regional Police
spokesman Sergeant Paul
Malik said Tuesday afternoon
of a search by police divers that
began Monday. “The visibility
is next to zero, so they have to
feel their way around.”
Family members used
binoculars to monitor their
progress from Beachpoint
Promenade. They did not want
to speak to the media.
Sergeant Malik said when
the kayakers returned to shore
Sunday and began packing up,
they noticed Mr. Verayo was
missing. They re-entered the
water and searched for about
an hour before calling police
around 2 p.m.
“Our information is that he
was not familiar with kayaking Police divers searched Monday in zero visibility for kayaker Philbert Verayo, who didn’t
return from an outing on Frenchman’s Bay on Sunday.

New crossing
to offer pedestrians,
cyclists direct route
across creek
PICKERING —With the
Millennium Square and Trail
now open at the foot of Liver-
pool Road, the City is preparing
for its next major project on the
waterfront, says a local council-
lor.
Ward 1 City Councillor Dave
Ryan reported the tender for the
Petticoat Creek Crossing, a
bridge over the mouth of the
creek, will likely be awarded by
council at its Aug. 7 meeting,
with construction slated to
begin in the fall.
“It’s an exciting project,”
said Coun. Ryan, noting it will
create a direct route across the
water for pedestrians and cy-
clists using the waterfront trail.
“It’s a nice straight bridge
with minimal impact on the en-
vironmentally-sensitive areas,”
said Coun. Ryan, who added the
tenders are all in for the project.
He would not comment on
the anticipated cost.
The bridge, which will be-
come part of Pickering’s water-
front trail system, has gone
through several different de-
signs since the idea was first
proposed, Coun. Ryan noted.
“We’re very pleased with the
design,” he said.
“The big difference is in-
stead of going down the hill
closer to the creek, we now have
a bridge that spans the whole
ravine.”
Pickering resident David
Steele, who chaired the water-
front task force that recom-
mended the bridge be built, said
he’s looking forward to seeing
the project approved.
“It’s another major connec-
tion for the waterfront,” he said,
noting the crossing will be
“high enough (over the creek)
so you can look down at the
wetlands and appreciate the
beauty of it all”.
The bridge, which will be
erected about 10 metres above
the water, is expected to be open
next summer.
DAVE RYAN
‘It’s an exciting project.’
New system, new name for transit service
AJAX —The unofficial
name is about to become offi-
cial.
The board overseeing a
merged transit system has se-
lected the name Ajax Pickering
Transit Authority (APTA) for
the new service.
More than 100 entries were
submitted in a public competi-
tion to rename the new system.
A draw was held for the 20
entries suggesting the winning
name and Dex Tao of Toronto
received the $250 prize.
Ajax resident Gopal Dua, a
professional designer, won the
$250 prize for the new logo.
Mr. Dua’s entry was profession-
ally rendered, but there were
others that were good hand-
drawn entries, Pickering Re-
gional Councillor and board co-
chairman Maurice Brenner
noted.
“It was fun to see the entries,
which came from people of all
ages, including some students.
But we liked Gopal’s use of the
‘A’ and ‘P’, and how he com-
bined them to create a cross-
roads,” Coun. Brenner added.
The new logo will be un-
veiled Sept. 4, the first official
day of operations for the
merged system.
MARK HOLLAND
‘This is a project of a great
deal of significance.’

parently did not have a life-jacket,” he
said. The red kayak the man was op-
erating and his paddle were found
Sunday in reeds on the west side of
the bay, as was a shoe.
“We’re assuming it’s his shoe,”
said Sgt. Malik.
Durham and Toronto police, the
City of Oshawa Marine Rescue Asso-
ciation, the Pickering Fire Depart-
ment, and York Regional Police have
all taken part in the search.
Sergeant Malik said dive team
members say rising water tempera-
tures will in turn heat the body and
soon cause it to float to the surface, if
it is still in the bay.
The search was to continue today.

DURHAM —A second crack-
down by police and correctional offi-
cers on offenders serving house arrest
sentences in Ajax and Pickering
found 25 per cent weren’t home.
During the late-night blitz, offi-
cers from Durham Regional Police’s
19 Division — covering Ajax and
Pickering — and members of the
local parole and probation office con-
ducted door-to-door checks July 20
and found five of 20 convicts current-
ly serving conditional sentences
weren’t at home, said Sergeant Bruce
Townley.
The first night of enforcement,
earlier this month, found six of 18 of-
fenders required to be in their resi-
dence under court-imposed curfews
or conditional sentences, were not
home.
In fact, police have since found
out one offender recently sold his
house and moved away. The man did-
n’t leave a forwarding address, Sgt.
Townley said.
“He’s disappeared, gone. He sold
his house in south Pickering and
moved out in early June,” he said.
Robert Rozak, 42, formerly of
Tatra Drive, is wanted for being un-
lawfully at large.
Judges can impose conditional
sentences as an alternative to jail if
the court is convinced the convict
does not pose a danger to the public
and the principles of sentencing can
be satisfied.
The terms of a conditional sen-
tence usually include a form of house
arrest.
Convicts caught breaching their
conditional sentence can be ordered
to serve all or a portion of the balance
of their sentence in jail.
Sgt. Townley said the people
checked as part of the current “pilot
project” were serving conditional
sentences for crimes ranging from
sex offences, to robbery, drug import-
ing, trafficking, hit-and-run, fraud
and possession of stolen vehicles.
Those breaching their terms are
usually “out with friends”, Sgt.
Townley.
“It’s not a shock to be honest...
(The rate of breaches) is frustrating
as a police officer. In our opinion
there’s little respect for the court or-
ders.”
The majority of the 11 offenders
arrested for breaching were denied
bail pending hearings, which are usu-
ally in front of the original sentenc-
ing judge.
He said police and correctional of-
ficials in the Ajax and Pickering area
plan to continue the enforcement pro-
ject on a long-term basis and hope to
increase the number of checks.

ASK VIC THE PROFESSIONAL
QUESTION: I feel a vibration from my car when driving at highway speed (100 km/hr), even after having the front suspension and steering mechanism inspected with no faults detected and
after replacing all four tires. How can I tell if a slightly bent wheel is the cause of the vibration?
ANSWER: A competent technician would first road test the vehicle at highway speed to duplicate your vibration concern and isolate the fault to be either the front or rear wheels. A vibration felt in the steering wheel would indicate
a fault in the front of the vehicle, whereas a vibration felt in the seat would indicate a fault in the rear of the vehicle. After the road test, the concern would now be narrowed down to two of the four wheels. In order to isolate the
suspect wheel from the two remaining wheels, a balance check of the new tires would be the first course of action, then secondly, choosing one of the two wheels, the tire must be removed and the wheel mounted on an electronic
wheel/tire balancing machine. Then a precision measuring instrument called a “dial indicator” that enables one to measure in increments of one thousandths of an inch is utilized to measure the concentricity of the wheel and how
true the wheel runs laterally. When the wheel is rotated on the wheel balancer spindle past the fixed dial indicator, the needle on the dial indicator will deflect noticeably to indicate the extent of the warp or bend in the wheel if
present, even if the anomaly is not visibly apparent. Your technician will be able to more easily detect the wheel causing the vibration by using this method, allowing for a speedy correction and a smoother ride!

Hospital Foundation
combined with
Centenary group
BY KEITH GILLIGAN
Staff Writer
AJAX — The hospitals
merged long ago and now the
fund-raising foundations have
done likewise.
The foundation at the Ajax
and Pickering Health Centre
and its counterpart at the Cen-
tenary Health Centre in Scar-
borough have combined to be-
come the Rouge Valley Health
System Foundation.
“It’s better to go with a
stronger entity to take to peo-
ple who can help us with the
campaign,” said Nancy
Maxwell, new foundation
head. “If you’re going to ask
for $1 million, a stronger enti-
ty is better than two smaller
ones.”
She noted the Province or-
dered the two hospitals to
merge, but allowed the foun-
dations to remain separate.
“The boards voted on this.
It was felt the best way to go
to raise funds for both sites,”
Ms. Maxwell said.
A foundation office will re-
main at both sites, and she
added the Ajax and Pickering
office “will probably be en-
hanced with more people to
staff it.”
While there is one founda-
tion, anyone can still make a
site-specific donation, she
said.
“Definitely. It’s one of the
things the Ajax and Pickering
foundation was most con-
cerned about, for people look-
ing at giving the funds, not
only individual donors, but
service clubs also,” Ms.
Maxwell stated. “If they want
to give it to a specific founda-
tion or specific site, it goes to
that site. Legally, we’re oblig-
ated to do that, to fulfil any
donor’s wishes.”
She added foundation
members don’t feel either site
will lose identity with the con-
solidated foundations.
“We don’t feel that’s going
to be a problem,” she said.
“There are two very specific
sites. Ajax and Pickering is
very definitely a local hospi-
tal. It will always have an
identity on its own. In the fu-
ture, we could be bigger than
the Scarborough site, with
growth in the community.
“It’s a very positive step for
all concerned.”
Under the banner of the
Vital Links Campaign, a fund-
raising effort is going to be
launched, probably early next
year, she said.
The Vital Signs Campaign
for the communities of Ajax,
Pickering and Whitby has a
goal of $13.7 million, while
the Vital Investments Cam-
paign for Centenary has a tar-
get of $20.3 million.
“It’s two distinct cam-
paigns combined under the
Vital Links Campaign. Each
site has its own campaign,”
said Ms. Maxwell.
For the Ajax site, the cam-
paign would go to improve a
number of different areas, in-
cluding the emergency depart-
ment.
“It’s probably a five-year
campaign,” Ms. Maxwell esti-
mated.

MPP Janet Ecker, who took
part in the ceremony at
what’s known as the La-
fontaine Lodge Long-Term
Care Facility.
“These specialized units
will be of particular benefit
to residents afflicted by
more than a lack of mobili-
ty.”
The lodge is one of
many long-term care facili-
ties across the Greater
Toronto Area that are under
construction as part of the
Province’s $1.2-billion
multi-year investment in
long-term care.
The Ministry of Health
reports a total of 823 new
long-term care beds have
been allocated to Durham
Region for development by
2004. The Lafontaine
Lodge project is slated for
completion in June 2002.
“Lafontaine Lodge Lim-
ited is proud to be develop-
ing these new long-term
care beds as part of Com-
munity Nursing Home at
the Village Retirement Cen-
tre in Pickering,” said Brian
Bradley, president of Com-
munity Lifecare Manage-
ment Inc., in a news re-
lease. “Today’s announce-
ment celebrates our pledge
with the government to
make these facilities open
and accessible to every-
one.”

PICKERING —Local transit
users will soon have more chances to
buy bus tickets and get information at
the Pickering GO Station.
Beginning Aug. 7, the passenger
service centre will be open weekday
mornings and a little later in the
evening, said Deanna Wilson, admin-
istrative support co-ordinator.
She said the move was prompted
by a passenger survey the City con-
ducted in the fall.
“There was quite a bit of demand
for service in the morning rush hour,”
said Ms. Wilson, who noted morning
rush-hour passengers often have five
or 10 minutes to kill before their train
arrives.
As a result, the service centre will
be open Monday to Friday between
6:30 and 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 7:30
p.m. It is currently open weekdays
from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.
In addition to selling bus tickets
and monthly passes, Pickering ser-
vice centre staff are available to pro-
vide bus route and schedule informa-
tion.

P PAGE A6 NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, August 1, 2001
Proud members of
Ontarians have been given a
few rare glimpses of the inner
workings of Premier Mike Har-
ris’s government and these cannot
have increased their respect for it.
The insights were provided be-
cause some with legal rights de-
manded them and not because the
Progressive Conservatives volun-
teered to tell the public more inti-
mate details of how they do their
jobs.
At least a couple emerged from
a public inquiry into the cause of
contaminated water at Walkerton
suspected of killing seven people.
The Tories may claim they set up
the enquiry because they were
happy to have their workings
scrutinized, but pressure from the
opposition parties and public
made it inevitable.
The Harris government had cut
spending on environmental pro-
tection drastically and one major
issue is whether this caused or
contributed to the deaths.
Brenda Elliott, Mr. Harris’s
first environment minister, said
during questioning that she sub-
mitted a confidential plan to cabi-
net that stated her ministry could
cut costs, but warned its ability to
monitor and assess environmental
change would diminish and risk to
human health and the environ-
ment might increase.
The government went ahead
with the cuts, but made public a
document that did not mention the
risks because it wanted to build a
positive image of its environmen-
tal policy, not exactly the candour
expected from Mr. Harris, who
boasts he makes tough decisions
and tells the truth even when it
hurts.
Ms. Elliott said also a $30-mil-
lion cut in her ministry’s budget
was imposed on her by cabinet, a
highly unusual admission because
ministers in normal circumstances
do not reveal what goes on in cab-
inet without its approval, take the
position its decisions are unani-
mous and made by a team, and do
not divulge anything that might
show any minister dissented.
Mr. Harris had more views he
would have preferred kept secret
exposed to public gaze because
the family of Dudley George, an
aboriginal shot dead by Ontario
Provincial Police while occupying
Ipperwash provincial park in
1995, early in Mr. Harris’s pre-
miership, have launched a court
action for compensation.
The premier has denied repeat-
edly he took any part in directing
police to clear the park, but the
court obtained notes made by a
lawyer with the Province’s native
affairs secretariat, who chaired a
government committee that held
an emergency meeting the day
Mr. George died.
The lawyer wrote that staff of
the natural resources ministry,
which operates parks, urged cau-
tion and pointed out the demon-
strators were merely occupying an
empty park.
But she noted a Harris aide
said the premier was hawkish and
felt the longer the natives were al-
lowed to occupy the park the more
support they would get and he
would like action to remove them
as soon as possible. A civil ser-
vant added Mr. Harris viewed the
occupation as a test of his govern-
ment’s will.
Such government documents
are difficult to obtain and out-
siders often do not even know
they exist. Records of cabinet
meetings are seen even more
rarely.
The only time minutes of cabi-
net meetings were made public
was after the Tory government of
premier William Davis took own-
ership of a northern tourist resort,
Minaki Lodge, in the 1970s when
it ran into financial problems,
hoping to save jobs and keep
votes in the area just before an
election.
The former owner sued the
Province for compensation claim-
ing it unfairly pressured him in to
handing it over and the Supreme
Court of Canada ordered the
Province to hand over minutes
and other records of cabinet meet-
ings. The Tory government, which
often boasted it was run by hard-
headed businessmen who knew
how to meet a bottom line, poured
$40 million into renovating and
subsidizing the lodge before it
was sold to a hotel chain for a
mere $4 million.
The intriguing question for
taxpayers was who among the
ministers pushed to own such a
drain on public money. They
turned out to be premier Davis,
treasurer John White, industry
minister Claude Bennett and nat-
ural resources minister Leo
Bernier, Mr. Davis’s chief lieu-
tenant in the north, anxious to pre-
serve his domain.
One of the few opposed to get-
ting involved was the former
hockey star, Syl Apps, who was
considered a minor league politi-
cian and held only a junior cabinet
post.
He warned the Province could
not run the lodge profitably and
would need to keep pouring
money into it. No wonder govern-
ments want to keep their records
secret.
Uncovering what lies beneath
Short of legal rulings, cabinet decisions usually kept under wraps
You said it
The question was:
With report cards on the performance of
municipalities about to be released, do you feel
you’re well-served by municipal politicians?
It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it should out-
rage law-abiding, taxpaying citizens: 29 per cent of criminals
sentenced to house arrests were not home when police did
residence checks in Ajax and Pickering recently.
The officers did two blitzes in the area and when they
knocked on 18 doors the first night, they found a whopping
six offenders not home. A check of 20 dwellings the second
evening found five convicts not where they were legally sup-
posed to be. They even discovered one offender had recently
sold his house and moved away. The man apparently packed
up, moved, and, ahem, did not leave a forwarding address.
Talk about contempt for the law!
Clearly, offenders don’t have any motive to stay home.
With residence checks few and far between, what are the odds
they’ll be caught? How much time can officers be expected to
use checking up on those sentenced to house arrest, also
known as conditional sentences?
These are questions with no simple answers.
Consider those sentenced to penitentiary time must live in
an environment where they’re under guard 24 hours a day,
where they must be accountable for their actions at all times.
Now, take the example of criminals provided with house ar-
rest. There are no limits, save those the judge reads out at sen-
tencing. Who is there to apply the punishment, to make the
criminal serve his sentence? Nobody.
Conditional sentences have been an option for judges for
the past five years and tens of thousands of offenders have re-
ceived such terms. Judges are handing out more conditional
sentences than the system can safely handle and properly po-
lice. With the cost of warehousing criminals increasing and
jail space at a premium, the decision to hand out conditional
sentences is largely based on economics.
As a result, some criminals convicted of sex offences, rob-
bery, drug importing, trafficking, hit and run, and fraud are
getting a virtual free ride. They’ve been sentenced to house ar-
rest but with no teeth to the conditions of their sentence.
If conditional sentences are to remain central to our justice
system, the funds to monitor those under house arrest must be
made available. The Province will have to decide how impor-
tant respect for the law is and will have to pay for enforce-
ment. The alternative is to give the criminals free rein. That’s
hardly just.
You can forgive local politicians for reacting swiftly and
loudly to reports that Toronto officials were casting glances
east once again in a bid to manage their municipal waste.
News the City of Toronto is considering former landfill
sites in Pickering and Ajax for the creation of a composting fa-
cility was met with great opposition, particularly in Pickering,
where officials fought a long and expensive campaign to close
down the former Brock West landfill.
The former landfill sites — Brock North in Pickering and
Brock South in Ajax — are still owned by Toronto, thus the
reason for the City’s interest in considering one or both.
What Toronto’s latest foray in Durham Region served to
do, however, was underscore the need for more progressive
and active policies to promote composting and other waste re-
duction initiatives here at home.
Durham’s blue box recycling program still requires expan-
sion to accept more plastics, for instance. It already collects
yard waste for composting and aggressively promotes the use
of home composters. Pickering and Ajax, for their part, have
instituted four-bag limits for household waste.
All of this is well and good and illustrates municipal efforts
over the last decade. But more, much more, is needed if
Durham and its member municipalities are to meet waste di-
version goals on a sustainable basis.
In the context of Toronto’s proposal, Durham should con-
sider expanding its current composting efforts and begin ac-
cepting organic materials from outside the region on a fee
basis. That could provide revenue over the long-term to invest
in new technology, or innovative waste reduction programs.
As well, municipalities without weekly garbage bag limits
should consider implementing them. Pickering residents have
been limited to four bags each week for some time; Ajax just
implemented its new four-bag limit in April of this year.
And each of us has an individual responsibility. We must
ensure recyclable materials at home aren’t making their way
into our household garbage and, ultimately, to landfill sites.
We must ensure organic materials are being returned to the
earth via the various home composting systems available. We
must work together to inform ourselves of ways to continual-
ly reduce our waste footprint.
Governments have set tough new waste-diversion goals.
By working both individually and collectively, these goals can
be met.
But if we ignore the importance of the need to reduce,
reuse and recycle, we do so at our own peril.

Time to bite
the bullet
on gun laws
To the editor:
This gun situation is soon
going to be tragic and the feder-
al Liberal government will be to
blame.
The Liberals have devoted all
their time and energy to a useless
gun registry while at the same
time allowing a proliferation of
illegal handguns to enter the
country. These illegal guns will
never go away and will haunt us
for years to come. It is time for
us to hear from Pickering-Ajax-
Uxbridge MP Dan McTeague on
this subject. Let’s hear some
concrete proposals, not all this
mumbo jumbo about this being a
complicated issue.
My first suggestion, for
starters, would be legislation that
would see anyone caught pos-
sessing an illegal handgun re-
ceive an automatic three years in
jail with no probation.
Mike Newman,
Pickering
Government
provides plenty
of reason
for outrage
To the editor:
Re: ‘Changes to OHIP coverage
for hearing tests ‘outrage’ MP,’
July 20, 2001.
Durham MP Alex Shepherd:
I’m outraged at a government that
will underwrite a contract bid for
Bombardier (a very competitive,
profitable, corporation) but has no
money for drought-stricken west-
ern farmers.
I’m outraged at a prime minis-
ter who demeans his office by in-
fluencing a loan application to a
man with a dubious financial and
criminal record.
I’m outraged by a government
that can waste $1 billion and still
not have purchased the helicopters
we so desperately need.
I’m outraged at a government
that spends hundreds of millions
of dollars on a gun registration
program that has done little to
stop the shootings and gun crimes
in our cities.
I’m outraged by a government
that has won two elections by
touting two ‘red books’ of glori-
ous promises but fulfilled very
few of them.
I’m outraged by a govern-
ment’s gluttonous tax grab every
time fuel prices rise.
I’m outraged, that while sitting
on huge cash surpluses you only
now subsidize health care to four
per cent, letting the provinces
wrestle with the rising costs.
I could go on and on but the
editor would not allow me enough
space.
Mr. Shepherd could you please
focus your outrage on some of the
above-listed problems and the cit-
izens of Canada would all benefit.

In May, residents in Pickering sent
2,138 metric tonnes (24.29 kilograms
per person) of waste to landfill. In Ajax,
1,885 tonnes (28.13 kg per person) was
put out at curbside. These figures of res-
idential waste from both homeowners
and apartment dwellers are printed as a
guide on how well or how poorly we are
doing. This is becoming depressing as
the tonnage keeps going up for both
communities.

PICKERING —A city resident is
basking in the afterglow of receiving a
prestigious Emmy nomination from
the Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences.
Whitevale resident Mark Fordham
is nominated for an award in the cate-
gory of ‘outstanding special visual ef-
fects for a mini-series, movie or spe-
cial’for his work on the made-for-tele-
vision movie, ‘Haven’.
“We’re overwhelmed (by the nomi-
nation),” said Fordham, the head of the
matte department at Toronto-based
Calibre Digital Pictures, which headed
up the visual effects for the Alliance-
Atlantis production. “We’re all pretty
happy here.”
Fordham and his team of Allan
Walker, Matt Schofield and Noel
Hooper provided the matte work for
‘Haven’— the true story of Ruth Gru-
ber, an American who made a perilous
voyage to Europe to rescue 300 Jews
during the Second World War and
bring them back to the U.S. The made-
for-television movie was originally
broadcast on CBS and CTV last
spring.
Matte work, explained Fordham, is
as old as movies themselves. It in-
volves creating photos or realistic
paintings that serve as backdrops for
movie scenes. In modern moviemak-
ing, computers now handle this task
exclusively.
“They could be filming on the
streets of Toronto, but we could place
(the scene) in 1940s Brooklyn,” said
Fordham of how realistic in nature the
work has become.
By way of example, he pointed out
one scene in ‘Haven’ shows an actress
walking up a driveway to the White
House. Meanwhile, the actual filming
for the scene was done in Toronto.
“She was actually walking on a big
green screen,” said Fordham, with the
appropriate scenery placed in the
frame in the post-production phase.
“People can’t even tell we’ve been
there. It has to be so seamless that it
appears that no special effects were
even involved.”
While it’s his first Emmy nomina-
tion in the special effects field, Ford-
ham also received a Gemini Award
nomination last year. Gemini Awards
recognize excellence in English lan-
guage television production in Canada
and Fordham was nominated for his
work in the TV series ‘Amazon’, also
for Alliance Atlantis.
Fordham admitted that although
getting a nomination is more than
enough recognition for work on a pro-
ject, he hasn’t given much thought to
actually making the trip to the podium
on Emmy night.
“The industry is really driven by
nominations. It would be great (to
win), but it’s all about being nominat-
ed, which is terrific,” he said.
A five-year employee of Calibre,
Fordham was formerly a full-time real-
ist painter. He once had an exhibition
of his works at the McLaughlin
Gallery in Oshawa. He does, however,
enjoy his new artistic passion of work-
ing in the matte field.
“It’s terrific; it’s a lot of fun,” he
said.
The 53rd annual Primetime Emmy
Awards will be presented at the Shrine
Auditorium in Los Angeles Sunday,
Sept. 16. Hosted by comedienne Ellen
DeGeneres, the awards show will air
on CBS.

Sprinters off two next level
Pickering athletes Henry,
Davis make up half
of national relay team
BY AL RIVETT
Sports Editor
PICKERING —This year’s
Canadian relay team at the World
Track and Field Championships has a
decidedly local feel.
That’s because two of the four
members of the men’s 4-x-100-metre
unit are Pickering residents. Anson
Henry, 22, will be joined by city na-
tive and longtime friend Devon
Davis, 22, on the Canadian team. The
worlds run Aug. 3 to 12 in Edmonton.
In addition to Henry and Davis,
Pickering Olympian Perdita Felicien
will also run for Canada as the coun-
try’s top hope in the women’s 100m
hurdles.
It’s been the realization of a goal
for Henry, entering his senior year at
Washington State University, to run
on the world stage.
And, to say the least, he’s elated to
be among the country’s elite athletes.
“It was one of my goals to make it
on this team and I’m pretty happy
about it,” said Henry, a Dunbarton
High School graduate.
It doesn’t hurt that Henry is run-
ning with friend Davis, a University
of Northern Iowa student who’s been
a standout sprinter and jumper at the
university.
“We’ve known each other for a
long time, since we were each eight
years old.
“It’s cool (to be on the Canadian
team). It helps a lot to have people
there who you’ve known for a while,”
said Henry.
Henry and Davis headed for Cal-
gary last weekend where they’ll prac-
tise running the relay early in the
week before heading off to Edmon-
ton for the actual race.
Henry has been training with the
Mississauga Track Club in prepara-
tion for the worlds and admitted he’s
both excited and nervous, saying it’s
the “first step to the next level” of
competition.
The Canadian 4-x-100m relay
team represents a new wave of ath-
letes for the event, one where Canada
has been a perennial contender,
showing up the Americans with a
gold medal at the 1996 Olympic
Games in Atlanta.
Henry said it will be up to him and
his teammates to continue to keep
Canada strong in the event.
“Canada has a good reputation in
the relay, so there is some pressure
there to keep that tradition going,” he
said.
As a first-time competitor at the
worlds, Henry said he plans to keep
his concentration in the relay and,
most of all, keep it simple.
“In my head, I just want to keep it
simple,” he said. “We have fast peo-
ple on the team, we just have to get
the stick around (the track) as quick-
ly as possible.
“I’m nervous in that I’ve never
been at a track meet this big before,
but as far as running the relay goes,
I’m not too nervous about that.”

AJAX —The Ajax Warriors
Johnson Controls Gunners boys’
under-14 rep soccer team

iar foe with a blowout victory in
league play at Monarch Park

dard. In the second half, Jordon
Hannon scored on a setup from

floodgates. Josh Forth followed
with Ajax’s third goal after he
