Pickering councillor says it’s
‘imperative you look at the total picture’
BY MICHAEL PELHAM
Special to the News Advertiser
PICKERING —Local residents and environmen-
talists expressed concern this week protected farm-
land in north Pickering may one day be used for de-
velopment.
However, individuals and groups had their say at
Monday’s Pickering planning committee meeting,
and councillors passed a motion to include 5,000
acres of easement-protected agricultural land in a
growth management study of the Seaton lands.
The Seaton lands are part of a provincial swap with
developers who own property on the environmentally
sensitive Oak Ridges Moraine in Richmond Hill.
Pickering is concerned parts of the lands could be-
come victim to urban sprawl if development isn’t kept
in check. The study is the City’s attempt at making
sure “cookie-cutter” growth doesn’t take place, and
environmentally sensitive areas are protected.
Jim Robb, of the Friends of the Rouge Watershed
group, urged councillors to make sure urban planning
doesn’t spoil the unique quality of the Seaton envi-
ronment.
“This city has the privilege of leaving a legacy to
make Pickering the most desirable place to live,” Mr.
Robb said.
The best way to go about development planning,
he said, would be to study the land and determine the
most environmentally sensitive parts first, then, based
on the results, determine where to develop.
One Whitevale resident didn’t see the point of
studying easement-protected land that’s already been
“studied to death.
“If the study (on the farmland) is done, then our
fears become real (that it could be developed on,” said
Scott trial put
over until
end of May
DURHAM ––The case of
Durham Crown attorney John
Scott, charged with impaired dri-
ving and failing to remain at an
accident, has been adjourned
until later this month following a
pretrial meeting in Oshawa court
Wednesday.
The 55-year-old Ajax man,
the region’s senior prosecutor,
was charged after a 16-year-old
boy was struck by a car while
walking with three friends along
Rossland Road, east of Harwood
Avenue, around 9:30 p.m. on
Jan. 29.
Durham Regional Police said
the driver of the car failed to
stop, leaving behind a broken
mirror, and returned to the scene
a few minutes later.
A pretrial meeting was held in
Judge Lorna Marshall’s cham-
bers with Mr. Scott’s lawyer,
Bernie O’Brien, and outside
prosecutor John Chalmers.
The case was put over until
Tuesday, May 28.

DURHAM —Improving student
achievement on provincial test scores is
a gradual process achieved through a
“sustained, focused commitment”,
Susan Perry said Monday night.
The Durham Catholic District
School Board elementary education
consultant was introducing the board’s
Education Quality and Accountability
Office (EQAO) improvement plan for
Grade 3, 6 and 9 students at the board
meeting.
Each year, following the release of
EQAO provincial test scores, the
Province requires that boards submit an
improvement plan that sets out goals
and outlines strategies for improving the
results.
“One goal is to connect literacy and
numeracy through teaching strategies
and assessment practices,” Ms. Perry
told trustees.
She noted EQAO math question di-
rections require a fair amount of literacy
comprehension skills before students
can tackle the problems.
In combining words and numbers,
the board expects teachers to have a bet-
ter understanding of what’s expected for
the EQAO assessments, and students to
be more comfortable when it’s time to
write the test. The board also wants to
involve parents more in the learning
process and to have them better under-
stand current assessment practices and
expectations.
Ms. Perry said in the past board early
learning teams would make presenta-
tions to parents at schools that requested
it; now the plan’s goal is to have presen-
tations for all parents.
Mary Gervais, also a board elemen-
tary consultant, said other goals for ele-
mentary students include better use of
mathematics in teaching problem-solv-
ing skills, and developing a greater
awareness among kindergarten, Grade 1
and 2 students of the reading process,
including the use of various reading ma-
terials that appeal to both boys and girls.
For Grade 9 students, secondary edu-
cation consultant Vanessa Taber said the
goal is to improve student learning in
math by ensuring students are placed at
the appropriate level in Grade 9. The
board plans liaisons between high
schools and elementary schools to in-
crease students’ confidence and help
them succeed.
The board proposes improving the
student-teacher ratio in Grade 9 applied
mathematics classes by lowering class
sizes to between 15 and 20 students.
Grade 9 applied math test scores on
the EQAO test were low across the
province, with only 13 per cent of stu-
dents achieving the provincial standard
or better. Just five per cent of board stu-
dents met or surpassed the standard.
“In my view, the test was too difficult
and maybe it needs to be revised,” said
programs superintendent Gerry Blake.
“The applied level of difficulty contin-
ues to be a concern to all educators. We
do not see a continuity in the scores be-
tween applied and advanced (math re-
sults).”
Oshawa Trustee Stan Karwowski
noted that when he was growing up par-
ents didn’t get very involved in their
kids’ homework. He suggested parents
become more hands-on with teaching
during the summer break
Education director Grant Andrews
said also he would like to see more
parental involvement.
“I think one of the things they could
do well is walk them to the library,” he
said.

DURHAM —The daughter of a
Toronto Police officer has testified
she was sexually abused by her fa-
ther for more than a decade, but kept
it secret because she was afraid no
one would believe her.
“I was scared. I thought I’d be
left alone. I didn’t think anybody
would believe me... because my dad
was a police officer,” said the 20-
year-old woman.
Her father, a 49-year-old
Durham Region resident, is on trial
in Superior Court of Justice accused
of sexually assaulting his two
daughters.
The accused, who cannot be
named to protect the identities of the
complainants, was charged by
Durham Regional Police in March
2000 with two counts each of sexu-
al assault, sexual interference and
sexual exploitation.
Crown attorneys Greg O’-
Driscoll and Dawn Way allege the
man abused his eldest daughter
from the time she was four or five
years old until she was about 17,
and his younger daughter while she
was between 13 and 15.
During testimony Wednesday,
the older daughter recounted the
first time her father assaulted her.
“I was four or five at the time,”
she told Justice John Sheppard, who
is hearing the case without a jury.
She said she was in the bedroom
with her sister when her father came
in and carried her down to the living
room couch, where he normally
slept. “He placed me on top of him,
on top of his pelvis. I was in a night-
ie... I didn’t understand at first,” said
the woman, who was
overcome with emo-
tion several times dur-
ing her testimony.
Throughout the
next dozen years, she
said her father assault-
ed her three or four
times each week in the
family home, though
no intercourse oc-
curred. When she was
about 17, just prior to
her parents separating, the woman
learned her father had a girlfriend,
and that this brought her relief.
“I was happy because it made all
the abuse stop towards
me,” she said.
Court heard she even-
tually disclosed the abuse
to a family counsellor she
was seeing to help deal
with her parents’ separa-
tion. Soon after that, she
said she told her mother,
and then police. She testi-
fied she never discussed
the abuse with her sister
and wasn’t aware she was also al-
legedly assaulted until told by a
Children’s Aid Society worker.
“We were told outside the police
station,” said the woman, adding her
mother fainted upon hearing the
news.
The trial continues.

Sandra Rider, adding the real solution
is to find more ways to make farmland
on the currently unused land viable.
“It’s already been thoroughly re-
searched, it is Class 1 agricultural
land, and should stay reserved.”
The matter is simple, added David
Steele, chairman of Pickering Ajax
Citizens Together for the Environ-
ment.
“If agricultural land is Class 1 or
Class 2, then it should not be devel-
oped on, period.”
However, he said a study on the
farmland would be appropriate to de-
termine the quality of the land, but
should be done by a “top-notch scien-
tist”.
Ward 2 Regional Councillor Mark
Holland urged fellow councillors to
vote against including the agricultural
lands in the study, warning it may sug-
gest the City is willing to give in to de-
velopers wishing to build on the land.
He said previous studies, which led to
the easements, need to be grounded in
a policy recognizing the land is pre-
served for farming and should stay that
way.
“It’s doomed for failure,” Coun.
Holland said about including the farm-
land in the study. He added it doesn’t
make sense to spend money on a study
for land that can’t be developed any-
way.
“We’re walking down a process that
will cost an ex-
treme amount of
money,” he said.
However,
Ward 1 Region-
al Councillor
Maurice Bren-
ner countered,
“water knows
no boundaries”
and surveying
land as part of
an environmen-
tal assessment
must include the
whole environ-
ment to get the
whole picture of
factors such as
the watershed
system.
“The prob-
lem today is that
decisions (about
development)
are being made
in isolation,”
Coun. Brenner
said. “It is
piecemeal plan-
ning.”
Setting a pol-
icy to leave the
farmland alone,
he said, prede-
termines the
growth manage-
ment study and
ignores future
impacts that
agricultural and
developable
lands could
have on one an-
other.
“Everything
is integrated —
urban and agri-
cultural,” Coun.
Brenner said.
“You can’t ground it and say you’re
going to ignore it. It’s imperative you
look at the total picture, the interrela-
tions and impacts.
“It cannot be fragmented, you can-
not seclude it.”
Only councillors David Pickles and
Holland opposed the motion.

DURHAM —The federal government
plans to do the right thing with lands expro-
priated for the Pickering airport, says the
transport minis-
ter.
“Thirty-five
years ago the fed-
eral government
expropriated too
much land for the
Pickering Air-
port, including
thousands and
thousands of
acres of farm-
land,” David Col-
lenette told an
arena full of local
business and po-
litical leaders,
Wednesday night
in Clarington.
“We have to start
turning it back to
its original pur-
pose.”
In April 2001,
Mr. Collenette,
who is also the
minister respon-
sible for the
Greater Toronto
Area, announced
the government
would take “ap-
propriate steps”
to ensure the
Pickering lands
would be desig-
nated as airport
lands. The an-
nouncement was
to ensure proper
zoning was in
place if and when
an airport was
needed, he said.
In January, the
minister said he
anticipates a re-
gional reliever
airport will be built in Pickering by 2015.
“We can still have a smaller airport some-
time in the future” and preserve thousands
of acres of environmentally sensitive and
agricultural land, the minister said.
“There is an opportunity to take that
largest piece of undeveloped land in the
GTA and use it for the appropriate purpose.
A year ago we announced the federal gov-
ernment was freezing development of 7,500
acres on the Oak Ridges Moraine that is part
of the Pickering lands. This is ecologically-
sensitive land. You don’t get an Oak Ridges
Moraine everyday. It must be protected and
preserved,” Mr. Collenette said.

Are you a happy person? Have you
thought about this rather important
question recently?
Common sense tells us that no
sane person seeks unhappiness. But
what, in fact, does it mean to be
happy? There are lots of things in life
that promise ‘happiness’but few actu-
ally deliver. Some deliver for a while
but ultimately disappoint. This is an
important question, for only a proper
understanding of happiness can lead
to choices and actions rooted in reali-
ty as opposed to our own caprice.
Clearly it is not found in the sheer
ability to do whatever we want. That’s
nothing more than slavery to our pas-
sions. True happiness is the ability to
pursue the ultimate purpose of our ex-
istence, it’s that simple. If you’re reli-
gious, that probably means the pursuit
of God. But even if you don’t consid-
er yourself religious, you still likely
recognize that a full stomach and a
good job don’t seem to fulfil human
desires (if that’s all it took, we’d be the
happiest nation on Earth, but alarming
rates of abortion, suicide, and divorce
clearly show we’re not). We naturally
long for a good beyond ourselves: to
contribute, to make a difference, to
love. But even then our hearts seem
pulled unmistakably towards a final
perfect goodness, love, and meaning.
Although a hearty dinner and big-
ger paycheque will never lead to last-
ing happiness, many of us spend a
lifetime seeking complete fulfilment
in precisely such a limited manner:
who’s making more, who has the
nicer home.
When such a frame of mind de-
fines our entire existence, how hard it
must be to care about things like the
intrinsic dignity and protection of
human life, for surely such concerns
won’t help us win our next promotion.
Such a narrow definition of who
we are and our purpose in life cannot
help but prompt the unsettling thought
we are dramatically under-living our
lives. How can we possibly know
whether our choices in life are good or
bad, will help us or harm us, make us
ultimately happy or leave us ultimate-
ly unfulfilled unless we’ve made an
honest attempt to answer the funda-
mental question of our life — why?
Every important human issue we
will ever discuss, from abortion to
same-sex relationships hinges on this
answer. Given the indescribable joy
promised in true human fulfilment,
what a great disservice we do to peo-
ple by ignoring these questions be-
cause of their often-difficult demands.
On the journey to happiness – but why?
Understanding our choices impossible without answering fundamental question

Waterfront trial a
true gem for users
To the editor:
Congratulations to the City of Picker-
ing and its waterfront committee for the
continuing improvements to our great wa-
terfront trail. As a regular walker on the
trail between Pickering Beach Road in
Ajax, and the Rouge River in Pickering, I
am most appreciative of the ongoing work
not only by Pickering, but by our sister
community, Ajax.
The latest link, the bridge over Petti-
coat Creek, eliminates the somewhat haz-
ardous (and often damp) fording of that
stream and at the same time, affords a
wonderful view of the valley and river
mouth below. The angled design of the
bridge, similar to the one over Duffins
Creek, the use of construction materials
that blend naturally with the surroundings,
and the minimal impact of the project on
the environment are to be commended.
Any Ajax or Pickering citizen who en-
joys walking and has not taken advantage
of this facility should do so and see first-
hand how some of our tax dollars, in my
opinion, are being wisely invested for
today and the future.
Now, if we could only overcome the
hurdle presented by the boat entrance to
Frenchman’s Bay — either by pontoon
boat or an appropriate bridge structure, we
would really have a “world class” water-
front trail.

e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com
Now that he has seen his vision of a dual college/university come
true, Gary Polonsky, the president of Durham College/University of
Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), is determined to make sure
nothing gets in the way.
That’s why the dynamic post-secondary school leader spoke to
Durham council a few days ago and laid it on the line for municipal
politicians. Money talks said the academic, and politicians should
listen.
“It (the college/university) will have a minimum economic im-
pact, annually, estimated at over a billion dollars. The only major
problem is transit,” said Mr. Polonsky.
Durham has grown tremendously since Mr. Polonsky came to the
college over a decade ago. More students than ever are interested in
taking courses at the north Oshawa campus. But that’s nothing com-
pared to the explosion of interest the college/university will gener-
ate over the next decade. Should Durham land the International
Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, UOIT and
Durham College will receive an even greater demand on its services.
UOIT is expected to open its doors in time for the ‘double co-
hort’ in September 2003. While the university will start small, its
projected to grow in leaps and bounds. The combined student pop-
ulation of Durham/UOIT by 2020 is expected to be an eye-popping
28,000 according to Mr. Polonsky.
The majority of those students will need fast, efficient, state-of-
the-art transit connections. For that matter, Durham’s rapidly ex-
panding population needs improved transit.
That’s why regional politicians must work together to figure out
an effective way to deliver transit across the region so that students
who live in Clarington, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Port Perry or
Uxbridge can attend the college/university without having to move
away from home or buy a car. After all, post-secondary tuition con-
tinues to climb and the cost of a university/college education is only
getting more expensive.
Pickering Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner asked Mr.
Polonsky if Durham/UOIT would be willing to subsidize the cost of
a regional transit system.
“We’ve said in every meeting we’ve had with the regional transit
folks we’re not looking to hit up the taxpayer,” he responded. “We
understand we have to pay our fair share. We are prepared to subsi-
dize students and our students are prepared to pay a certain amount.”
Councillors must lay the groundwork for an intricate system by
making sure an east-west regional artery, Taunton Road perhaps,
can handle transit traffic.
They’ll also have to work with local systems in each municipal-
ity to make sure the system is cost-effective. It’s a major challenge
but one that must be met in the next few years.

Durham students will have their own cross to bear
Catholic board
prepares to celebrate
arrival of World
Youth Day cross
BY MIKE RUTA
Staff Writer
DURHAM —Students from
the Durham Catholic school
board’s seven high schools will
carry the World Youth Day cross
through south Oshawa June 12,
ending with a mass at Lakeview
Park for hundreds of pupils.
The cross is the symbol of the
Roman Catholic youth event, to
be held July 18 to 28 in Toronto.
Hundreds of thousands of young
people from around the world are
slated to attend, making World
Youth Day 2002 the largest inter-
national conference ever held in
Canada.
Pope John Paul II presented
the four-metre wooden cross to a
delegation of young Canadians in
Italy in anticipation of the event.
Since then it has been taken to
communities across Canada, with
the final leg of its journey to
Toronto a 43-day walking pil-
grimage that began in Montreal
April 28.
The cross will be carried into
Bowmanville June 5 and the fol-
lowing day it arrives in Oshawa.
It is then on loan to the Durham
Catholic District School Board
June 12.
Sharron McKeever, the
board’s religious education con-
sultant, said at Monday’s board
meeting the cross is being carried
along Hwy. 2.
“The cross seems to have a
strong impact on people who see
it,” she told trustees, noting those
along the route are leaving what
they’re doing to go outside and
see it.
Ms. McKeever outlined the
June 12 itinerary in which the
cross will be taken out into the
Oshawa community, with stops at
two Catholic elementary schools.
The cross arrives at Monsignor
John Pereyma Catholic Sec-
ondary School early in the morn-
ing and will be carried in the en-
trance procession of a mass to be
celebrated in the gymnasium.
Oshawa Trustee Stan Kar-
wowski suggested using the Os-
hawa Civic Fields as the venue
for the mass instead of Pereyma
so more students could partici-
pate.
Ms. McKeever said while that
was the original plan, the cost of
busing students was “incredible”
and there was no guarantee buses
would be available.
Pickering Trustee Fran Pereira
noted “the cross will be in each
municipality” in south Durham
before World Youth Day begins,
giving local residents an opportu-
nity to see it.
After the mass at Pereyma,
students from the school are to
carry the cross to Conant Park,
where they will hand it over to
students from the board’s other
Catholic high schools for the
walk to Lakeview Park, starting at
9:30 a.m.
Their route will take them
along Nelson and Waterloo
streets, Ritson Road South and
Simcoe Street South, Thomas and
Cedar streets, Dwight Avenue and
Oxford Street, with a stop at
Monsignor Phillip Coffey
Catholic School.
The plan is for students to then
walk east on Emerald Avenue,
south on Cedar Street and east on
Chaleur Avenue with a stop at
Canadian Martyrs Catholic
School.
The cross will then be carried
along streets in the Valley
Drive/Ritson Road South neigh-
bourhood, with the last leg of the
walk on Wicker Drive and Lake-
view Park Avenue into the park,
where the cross is slated to arrive
at noon.
Roughly 600 Catholic high
school students will assemble in
the park for a liturgy and a barbe-
cue.
The cross is scheduled to be in
the following Durham communi-
ties in June and July: June 5,
Bowmanville; June 6, Oshawa;
June 7, Whitby/Pickering; June
12, Oshawa (Durham Catholic
District School Board); July 9,
Oshawa; July 10, Whitby; July
11, Ajax.

in the sun this summer
DURHAM —With the warm weather
coming, everyone should be sun savvy.
To help, the Canadian Cancer Society
and the Canadian Dermatology Association
are in the midst of Sun Awareness Week,
which runs until May 20.
The theme this year is sun and sports, fo-
cusing on using protection when taking part
in outdoor activities such as walking, golf-
ing or cycling.
Although the week is wrapping up, the
summer is filled with sun and the cancer so-
ciety has a few tips to use when in the sun:
• Reduce sun exposure between 11 a.m.
and 2 p.m. and seek shade or create your
own when possible;
• Slip, slap, slop: Slip on clothing to
cover arms and legs, slap on a broad-
brimmed hat and sunglasses, and slop on
sunscreen with an SPF of at least No. 15;
• Reapply sunscreen regularly, especially
after playing in the water; and
• Babies under one year old should be
kept out of direct sunlight.
For more information on sun protection
or skin cancer, call the Canadian Cancer So-
ciety at 1-888-939-3333 or visit www.on-

Volunteers still needed
to help stage annual
celebration
BY SARAH TEPER
Special to the News Advertiser
PICKERING —Rain or
shine the Frenchman’s Bay Festi-
val will be swinging into action as
usual next month.
“Everything is fine,” said festi-
val president Dave Johnson.
“We’re on schedule.”
Located in Pickering at the
foot of Liverpool Road by the
lake, the 11th annual festival offi-
cially begins June 7 and runs until
June 9, although the midway
rides open June 6.
This year’s theme is the habi-
tat of the Frenchman’s Bay and
the wildlife surrounding it.
“We want to bring awareness
to people,” said Mr. Johnson.
“There will be seminars and a
beach tour on Saturday.”
The event is filled
with entertainment
and activities for all
ages.
There will be musical shows
from the Pickering Concert Band
and a jazz band, a street dance,
craft sales, the midway, a bar-
tending race and more.
Admission and entertainment
is free. However, there is a cost
for food and the rides.
Last year’s festival brought out
15,000 people and four days of
great weather.
“We’re expecting the same,”
Mr. Johnson said. “We get a lot of
the same faces and the people of
Pickering have come to expect it
(the festival).”
And with all the planned activ-
ity comes the need for some help.
“Volunteers are needed to
work a few hours on any day,”
said Mr. Johnson.

unteer, visit www.frenchmans-

James Farrell twists,
spins and zig-zags
to get local news
to your door
BY SARAH TEPER
Special to the News Advertiser
PICKERING —It’s a
Wednesday afternoon and James
Farrell is wearing inline skates
and standing beside a white,
paper-filled cart filled with local
news.
Three days a week, rain,
snow or shine, he takes an hour
and a half to distribute the Pick-
ering News Advertiser along his
assigned route.
James’s thirst for employ-
ment began seven months ago
when he decided he wanted to be
a paper boy after watching an-
other young boy bring papers to
his house.
“I felt like getting a job, too,”
said the quiet, 10-year-old.
His first route consisted of
110 houses, which was quickly
reduced to 50.
“It was a little too much,”
James admitted.
He delivers to homes in an
area of south Pickering that con-
sists of a few big hills, making it
a little hard to push the cart.
Some days you’ll see him
zigzagging back and forth across
the road to each house, while on
others he heading up one side of
the street and then coming back
up (the hill) to do the other.
Today the delivery is pure art.
Along the route James is show-
ing off twists, spins and other
fancy footwork in his skates,
moves he admits are self-taught.
“It’s worth it because I get
paid. It’s fun and it gives me ex-
ercise and fresh air,” he said,
adding every four weeks when
he goes collecting he usually
earns $60 to $100.
Unlike other 10-year-olds,
however, who run to the store to
buy toys, games or candy with
their money, James puts his
money in the bank. He’s saving
up to buy a 3-D video card that
will provide better graphics for
his games.
“James is very wise with his
money,” said his mother, Mary
Anne Farrell.
A typical delivery day (he’s
out each Wednesday, Friday and
Saturday) actually begins the
day before when the flyers arrive
for inserting in the paper.
A Grade 4 student at Blais-
dale Montessori in Pickering,
James starts his deliveries
Wednesdays and Fridays after
coming home from school
around 4 p.m.
He starts stuffing the papers
with fliers in his garage around
4:30 p.m., which usually takes
about 30 minutes.
The day and mode of trans-
portation determines how fast it
takes to finish his route.
He mostly wears his inline
skates and can have the papers
delivered in an hour.
Walking and snow slow him
down because it’s hard to push
the cart. (He opted out of using
the carrier bag because it was
too big).
James noted his quickest time
to date is 17 minutes.
“I was with my uncle and sis-
ters,” he said.
Wednesdays prove to be
busiest for James because he has
Cubs at 6 p.m. That means hur-
rying home and being done be-
fore 5:30 p.m.
“Those days I’m constantly
telling James to hurry up,” ad-
mitted Mrs. Farrell, who added
he can dawdle sometimes.
Delivering the News Adver-
tiser has become a family affair.
James said when he is sick two
of his three sisters come to his
rescue (he also has a brother)
and most days you’ll find his
mom helping to stuff and deliver
as well.
“This is our little time togeth-
er. My one on one with James,”
Mrs. Farrell said. “We’ll talk on
the route.”
James admitted the only thing
he doesn’t like about having a
paper route is it takes away his
free time.
“Sometimes I want to do
other things like go on the com-
puter,” he said.
As for collections, James re-
called one time a man who he
could rarely get at home gave
him $20.
The computer and inline skat-
ing are two of James’ favourite
pastimes.
He also likes basketball and
has been playing the piano since
he was four.
“I hardly watch television,”
said James, but added he does
like to catch ‘Friends’ and the
movie ‘Blade 2’.
As his route ends, James be-
gins pushing the empty cart back
home with everyone a winner.
Satisfied customers get their
paper and James is ready for
some free time.

Tucked between evergreens
around the front of the house or trail-
ing from wooden balcony planters,
annuals provide flowers for the gar-
den up until frost. Sometimes over-
looked by gardeners intent on
achieving a “one time cost” thereby
favoring perennials or grasses, annu-
als can provide dashes of predictable
colour with a minimum of care ~ no
staking, no dividing required.
A few of the essential tasks the
gardener must do for their annual
flowers are: regular removal of faded
or finished booms (dead-heading);
supplemental watering during hot,
humid or dry weather and regular
feeding every two weeks with an all-
purpose fertilizer. Annual flowers
reward the gardener with a continu-
ous bloom period, producing flower
after flower after flower for many
months.
Geraniums continue to be a
‘classic’ favorite in the sunny annual
border, container, planting or hang-
ing basket in many hues of red, pink,
peach, and white. For best results, do
not over water geraniums, but allow
the soil to dry out between water-
ings, remove faded blooms and don’t
forget fertilizing.
Impatiens and begonias are
suited for the shady portions of the
annual border and are usually one of
the last plants still busy flowering
when the hard frost hits in October.
These plants will not only grow taller
but also wider and a mixed border of
different colours looks very full and
lush. Impatiens and begonias are
available in both a single and double
flower and a wide variety of colours.
Another interesting annual for those
shady areas of the garden is coleus -
multi patterned leaves in a wide
assortment of colours, sizes, and pat-
terns.
The petunias continue to delight
and amaze the gardener with new
and exciting varieties and colors.

that they planted only one “new

“new wave” petunia in their win-
dow box, they are not kidding - one
petunia will not only fill the win-
dow box, they will overfill the box
or planter with their vibrant, slight-
ly fragrant blooms.
For added fragrance in the gar-

favorite for edging borders or
tucked amongst other plants in con-

Gardening in a Small Space?
Gardening advice
brought to you by the
Ajax in Bloom Garden
Competition commit-
tee.
Want to get into
"potscaping"? Don't limit
yourself to annuals- try
perennials, ornamental
grasses, houseplants,
herbs and vegetables.
Pots can moved around
the garden as accents or
to fill in bare spots.
Consider the following:
*Planting medium-
soilless mixes blended
with triple mix provide a
good start.
* Drainage-contain-
ers must have free flow-
ing drainage holes.
Broken pottery can pre-
vent drainage holes from
clogging.
* Moisture- check
pots every day, and water
thoroughly when the top
inch of soil is dry.
* Nutrition-contain-
er plants have higher
nutritional needs- try an
organic fertilizer from
your garden centre.
* Container-try some
new containers, or refur-
bish older ones with a bit
of paint and imagination.
* Plant selection-
check plant requirements.
Sunny locations are good
for most, but they may
need daily watering; but
cool shady locations
aren't tolerated by every-
thing either! Top-heavy
plants may need support.
* Pests-reduce pests by
providing optimum growing
conditions and good air circu-
lation.
Let your imagination and
personal preferences be your
guide while you're shopping,
but here are some tried and
true choices.
* Annuals:impatiens,
begonia, geranium, lobelia,
fuchsia, vinca vine, german
ivy, biddens, ornamental
grass and petunia. Mix
together for a riot of color and
texture or plant singly for a
brilliant splash of color.
* Perennials:hosta, daisy,
crane's bill, thyme, sedum,
primula, lady's mantle, orna-
mental grass and coral bells.
Choose plants that will stay
low and compact for tidier
containers. Consider plants
that bloom all at once for a
midseason splash or a pro-
gression of flowering times
for a season-long display.
* Herbs:(perennials):
thyme, mint, lavender, chives,
fennel, oregano, sage, chives
and bergamot; (annuals):
rosemary, scented geraniums,
sweet bay, lemon verbena,
french tarragon, and pineap-
ple sage.
* Vegetables:Tomatoes,
beans, peas, cucumber,
squash, pumpkin and lettuce.
Check garden centres for
new products and books on
the newly acknowledged art
of potscaping.

DURHAM ––It’s the most anticipated
warm-weather holiday weekend of the
year, but Darlington Provincial Park won’t
be a part of it.
The local provincial park is closed this
weekend, due in large part to the after-ef-
fects of the eight-week old OPSEU strike.
Work needed to prepare the park for the
summer season couldn’t be carried out far
enough in advance as the strike, which
started March 13, ended only May 6.
Darlington won’t be ready for campers
until May 24.
Staff are still preparing the grounds,
cleaning up debris and testing water sys-
tems.
“I think the main objective is to make
sure the parks are safe; in the case of Dar-
lington, it’s going to take a little extra work
to do that,” said Greg Maude of Ontario
Parks.
He said there were a lot of windstorms
along Lake Ontario while the park was
closed and many trees and branches were
knocked over during the storms.
The debris has to be cleared and trees
have to be trimmed to make sure sites are
safe for visitors.
To find out which parks are open for
May 17, visit www.OntarioParks.com.

Closure of public
school prompts call
for freedom to
choose
BY MIKE RUTA
Staff Writer
AJAX —Not wanting
students split up when the
school closes, Parkside Pub-
lic School parents have
asked the public school
board to grant permission to
any child who wishes to at-
tend the unnamed Car-
ruthers Creek elementary
school.
Parkside students will ei-
ther attend that new school,
scheduled to open in 2003,
or Exeter High School,
which is being converted
into an elementary facility at
the end of this school year.
When the Durham Dis-
trict School Board in Janu-
ary approved the closure of
Parkside, the school council
objected that students in the
immediate area of Parkside
had to attend Exeter.
Parkside parent Jennifer
Longo at the May 6 standing
committee meeting said par-
ents “respectfully object” to
the notion of dividing the
population. Accepting the
school closure was hard
enough, she said, “you have
now asked us to give up
some of our children and we
can’t.
“We are not requesting
transportation. We are sim-
ply requesting that the chil-
dren be fully grandfathered
so that they do not have to
submit out-of-boundary ap-
plications every year (in
order to attend Carruthers
Creek).”
Ajax Wards 3 and 4
Trustee Melinda Crawford
said she was concerned
about the issue and asked fa-
cilities superintendent Jack
Massie, “is this workable
and can we have a report be-
fore I forward any motion?”
Mr. Massie replied the
new, 650-pupil school is ex-
pected to open under enrol-
ment capacity but be full by
2005. Grandfathering all the
students would present a
cost to the board because
portables would have to be
added to the site.
Oshawa Trustee Susan
Shetler said she supported
parents’ request.
“I would hope my col-
leagues around the table
would be empathetic,” she
said. “Sometimes you have
to consider the children in-
stead of the dollars.”
Gail Elliott, Ajax schools
superintendent, agreed to
work with the school princi-
pal and council on a survey
to determine how many stu-
dents walk to Parkside.
The parents contend 50
to 100 students live in the
immediate area of the school
and that adding them to the
new school’s population
shouldn’t be an issue.
Dawn O’Hara, Parkside’s
school community council
co-chairman, in an interview
said even if the survey
shows there are more than
100 students walking to
Parkside, it should not pre-
vent the board from trying to
accommodate parents.
“It makes it a little tricki-
er... but to me that’s not a
‘no’,” she said. “We have to
look at it in a slightly differ-
ent light, but we can still
look at it.”
Ms. Elliott said in an in-
terview she “can understand
where the parents are com-
ing from” and that it’s im-
portant to meet with and lis-
ten to the community.
As it has done in the past
when a school closes, the
board was already looking at
grandfathering the Parkside
Grade 8s so they could re-
main together as a group.
But, Ms. Elliott suggested
grandfathering all students
might not be in the cards.
“To have a look at all of
(the students), I’m not sure
that’s going to go any-
where,” she said.

‘Smartcard’ use to
end sooner in Ajax
Bus cards will no
longer be accepted
after June 28
AJAX —The date is
being moved up for when
‘smartcards’ will no longer
be accepted on Ajax buses.
Last week, Ajax Picker-
ing Transit Authority offi-
cials announced the cards
would be phased out by the
end of the summer. But,
now it’s going to happen
sooner because the equip-
ment used needs mainte-
nance work.
Officials decided that
rather than spend money on
the work, the smartcard
machines would be re-
moved.
As of Tuesday, May 21,
smartcard users won’t be
able to add to their account
and as of Friday, June 28,
the cards will no longer be
accepted.
Smartcards are comput-
erized cards that allow rid-
ers to deposit money into
an account and have fares
deducted as they use the
cards. Ajax was a pioneer
in the use of the transit
technology. Pickering did-
n’t have the technology on
its buses.
The Ajax and Pickering
transit systems were
merged last year.
During the phase-out pe-
riod, passengers can ex-
change the balance on their
smartcards for either a
multi-ride or monthly pass.
This can be done at the
APTA head office, next to
the Ajax GO station, or at
‘fare exchange bus’ loca-
tions.
A special fare exchange
bus will be at the Ajax GO
station Mondays and Fri-
days from May 27 to June
21, between 6 and 9 a.m.
APTA staff will be able to
answer questions or ex-
change cards for passes.
To further assist passen-
gers, the transit head office
will be open Saturdays
from May 25 to June 22,
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We need to have the
ability to interchange for-
mer Pickering and Ajax
transit buses,”APTA gener-
al manager Ted Galinis
said. “With the existing
technology in place, the
former Pickering Transit
buses cannot be used in
Ajax and as a result, we are
unable to maximize utiliza-
tion of the combined APTA
bus fleet.”
Smartcards may be rein-
troduced sometime in the
future, he added, as APTA
is working with other GTA
transit providers to create a
universally-accepted smart-
card for use on all buses
and commuter rail services.
“Although both Ajax
and Pickering support the
use of Smartcards for tran-
sit, a major expenditure for
new technology will only
be considered when we’re
sure that provincial funding
is secure and the GTA part-
ners agree on a common
smartcard and fare-collec-
tion system,” Mr. Galinis
said.
Effective May 25, an in-
terim June pass will be
available for Ajax passen-
gers.
For more information,
call the APTA offices at
905-427-5710.
DURHAM —Funding for one of the
province’s most important wetlands and
recreation programs in south Oshawa repre-
sent two of the largest grants made recently in
Durham Region by the Ontario Trillium
Foundation.
The good work of the Friends of the Sec-
ond Marsh will get a boost over the next four
years with a total of $300,000 for education-
al programs, community awareness and the
development of an interpretive centre.
The South Oshawa Community Develop-
ment Project will receive $224,700 over three
years to ensure recreation-based programs
over the long term, while developing commu-
nication strategies and attracting more volun-
teers.
Kingsview United Church in Oshawa,
where a plethora of community activities take
place throughout the year, is lined up for
$75,000 over three months to replace the
church roof.
North Durham Hospice is getting $75,000
over two years to help enhance its bereave-
ment programs, increase community aware-
ness and strengthen its fund-rais-
ing.
The Region of Durham Branch
of the Canadian Red Cross will re-
ceive $72,700 over two years to
support ongoing operations and
community awareness of the per-
sonal disaster assistance program
in Durham Region, Northumber-
land, Peterborough, City of
Kawartha Lakes and the Town of
Haliburton.
The Clarington Concert Band
Inc. has been awarded a grant of
$70,000 over six months to support
the band’s participation in the Great Canadi-
an Town Band Festival in June.
The Oshawa Curling Club will be able to
apply a permanent surface on the arena with
the $12,000 it will receive over three months,
reducing the club’s ongoing maintenance
costs. The Ontario Trillium Foundation is a
Ministry of Culture agency that receives $100
million each year in government funding
from the Province’s charity casino initiative.

Following are the new movie releases
being screened at local cinemas this week-
end:
STAR WARS: EPISODE II
ATTACK OF THE CLONES
Starring Ewan McGregor, Natalie Port-
man, Hayden Christensen, Samuel L.
Jackson
Directed by George Lucas
Ten years after the events of ‘The Phan-
tom Menace,’ the Republic is in turmoil.
A separatist movement has taken hold in
hundreds of planets, and poses a powerful
threat to even the Jedi. Amidst the chaos,
Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen)
and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) are
reunited with Padmé Amidala (Natalie Port-
man) after her life is threatened. Amidala,
the former Queen of Naboo, is now a Sena-
tor, and her passionate views make
her a target, especially in the eyes of
the separatists.
Obi-Wan makes a trip to the fur-
thest reaches of the galaxy to try and
uncover who is behind the threat on
Padmé’s life and crosses paths with
the feared bounty hunter Jango Fett
(Temuera Morrison), who travels
with his son Boba (Daniel Logan).
Meanwhile, Anakin travels with
Padmé to Tatooine, where he makes
a fateful discovery.
The challenges Obi-Wan and
Anakin face will not only impact
their own lives, but the lives of mil-
lions, as the Clone Wars begin.
ABOUT A BOY
Starring Hugh Grant, Toni Col-
lette, Rachel Weisz
Directed by Chris Weitz
‘About A Boy’ is about a man ––
a handsome, rich, shallow, self-ab-
sorbed, irresistible cad –– and the
unexpected relationship he develops
with a boy he meets while trying to
pick up another boy’s mother.
Terminally single and ecstatically
child-free, Will (Hugh Grant), a
trendy 38-year-old Londoner, spends
his days buying new CDs, shopping
for designer clothes and worrying
about his Audi Coupe and up-to-the-
second hairstyle.
Nights, whenever possible, are
devoted to beautiful women. Work?
What’s that?
Thanks to a ubiquitous Christmas
standard written by his dad and
recorded by everyone from Elvis to
the Muppets,
Will doesn’t have to work like the rest of
the world.
The royalties rolling in have enabled him
to make a profession –– an art, really –– out
of avoiding responsibility.
A no-strings fling with a single mom
turns on the proverbial lightbulb over his
head: maybe a good place to meet women
would be single-parent support groups. And
so, posing as a single dad with a fictitious
two-year-old, he joins SPAT –– Single Par-
ents, Alone Together.
Well on his way to charming a single
mom named Suzie (Victoria Smurfit), he in-
advertently bonds with a 12-year-old misfit
named Marcus (Nicholas Hoult), the
latchkey son of Suzie’s best friend.
For a complete listing of what’s playing
this weekend, contact your local cinema op-
erator.

The weather has been miserable lately. I always thought it was “April
showers bring May flowers”. YIKES! It’s been sooo COLD that everyone
has a COLD and you guessed it, the May showers have even “deepened
the depression”. Well if it turns out to be a miserable long weekend I’m
going to try and lift your spirits (maybe the temperature!) By far our
sundae sales are the most popular. What a selection we have. See

Durham West
Lightning
player goes
National
BY BRAD KELLY
Staff Editor
DURHAM —Just when it seems
Danielle Nagymarosi has done it all,
she is able to add one more element to
a whirlwind hockey season.
Included in the past couple of
months has been another provincial
crown at the midget ‘AA’level, includ-
ing two goals in a 3-1 title-clinching
win for her Ajax and Pickering-based
Durham West Lightning over the
Brampton Canadettes.
That was followed by a provincial
title with her Uxbridge Secondary
School teammates at the OFSAA
A/AA championships where she
scored once in the championship game,
a 3-2 overtime win over Almonte.
And to top it off?
Well, the Grade 10 student will be
leaving the comfort and familiarity of
her current digs and enrolling at the
National Sports Academy (NSA) in
Lake Placid, New York, next fall to
pursue her interest in hockey.
The majority of her tuition and ex-
penses will be covered through a
scholarship.
She originally piqued the interest of
recruiters south of the border at the
provincial championships in Brampton
last season.
“I didn’t even know there were
scouts at the tournament watching,”
she recalled.
Another school in the area, North-
wood, also expressed interest, but the
15-year-old right-winger decided at
NSA “the programs were a lot better.
They concentrate more on hockey, but
you have to keep your grades up.”
She’s hoping that by playing at a
U.S. high school she will get increased
exposure as she attempts to spring-
board into a university scholarship.
“To get somewhere in hockey
would be nice,” she laughed.
While she is anxious to begin an-
other chapter in what has been a story-
book 2002 thus far, Danielle is aware
of the pitfalls of moving away from
home and into an unfamiliar environ-
ment.
“It’s going to be tough to leave my
family and friends, but I know I’ll be
back. The first couple of weeks will be
rough but I know I will get over it.”

Malinda Denbok, right, of the Archbishop Denis O’Connor Chargers,
keeps the ball away from Exeter Falcons Kirsty Moore during senior
girls’soccer play Wednesday afternoon.DO’C won 2-0.
AJAX — The Archbishop Denis
O’Connor Catholic High School
Chargers senior girls’ soccer team con-
tinued its unbeaten string on the pitch
after a victory over a crosstown rival
Wednesday afternoon.
DO’C improved its Lake Ontario
Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA)
league record to 6-0-3 after a 2-0 home
victory over the Exeter Falcons varsity
squad.
DO’C coach Frank Baxter admitted
his charges may meet their toughest test
of the year next Thursday afternoon
when they travel to Pickering to meet
the St. Mary Catholic Secondary
School Monarchs, another unbeaten
team, in their final league game.
“I think us and St. Mary, along with
Exeter, Dunbarton and Pickering High
in the west have pretty equal teams,”
said Baxter.
Baxter noted juggling players to fill
specific roles at key times against Ex-
eter proved to be the difference in what
was otherwise a closely-contested
game between two well-matched rivals.
“We switched some players around
to fill certain holes we had and capital-
ize on their weaker areas and that
seemed to work,” he said.
Dawn Rynberk opened the scoring
in the early going of the first half, while
Sarah Playfair added an insurance
marker with about five minutes remain-
ing in the second half.
The Chargers host Central from Os-
hawa Wednesday afternoon before
meeting St. Mary.
Quarter-final playoff action begins
Monday, May 27 in the ‘AAA’ catego-
ry, with semifinals Wednesday, May 29
and the LOSSA final Thursday, May
30.

DURHAM —The boats are back.
Members of the Durham Rowing Club,
which has been in existence since 1990,
are back on the waters of Lake Scugog for
another season.
President Michael Maher says the club
has added $100,000 worth of new
equipment in the past three years,
through a grant from the Ontario
Trillium Foundation.
The grant has allowed the club to
grow to 60 members involved at the
novice, junior and senior age levels.
The club gets many of its mem-
bers from Durham high schools,
Maher said.
Sixty kids is the maximum the
group can have, Maher said, because
“we have a limited number of boats.”
The success of Canadian rowers in the
Olympics throughout the past decade “in-
creases awareness” of the sport among
area athletes, Maher said.
The club practices three times a week,
at 6 a.m. in Port Perry. Being a member of
the rowing club “requires training and
commitment”, said Maher.
Club members are divided into crews of
four and eight, who train together for an
hour, Maher said.
The Durham Rowing Club will compete
in several regattas this season.
The club will also be competing May 25
in London, Belleville on June 8 and Port
Perry on June 15.
In addition to the 60 high school kids,
the club is one of the first in Canada to
have an adaptive program for mentally
challenged people, Maher said.
They had 16 students out last year and
Maher said they hope to recruit more this
year.

Riverside Golf Club is the
Third Qualifying Site for the Fourth
Annual Durham Region Hole in One
Shootout.
Now in its 17th season, this
beautifully maintained 9-hole
course will challenge even the most
experienced golfer attracting many
junior golfers, ladies and husbands
and wives.
There are 2 par 5s, 5 par 4s and 3 par 3s with water coming into play on
every hole. Aside from four ponds, Duffins Creek meanders though the course.
Straight shots are required for a low score.
Memberships are available but Riverside is mainly a public course that takes
golfers on a first come first serve basis. There is a licensed clubhouse with a new
patio with umbrellas. You can also get a bite to eat while you’re there.
Tournaments are welcome and gas carts are available.
Golf Hints:A demanding shot is required in a successful approach to
this green. Depending on the location of the pin, club selection and ball flight will
be the main priorities. A back left pin
placement requires a soft draw with pre-
cise distance control to hold the green. A
pin placement on the right demands a
high fade to give the ultimate chance to
knock it tight. An extra club may be neces-
sary for the approach to this slightly ele-
vated green. Good Luck!
