OPG officials expect blades to start spinning ‘at any time’ BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE Staff Writer PICKERING —Any time now, Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) worries should be gone with the wind. A spokesman at OPG said yes- terday morning that Pickering’s new 30-storey windmill, which can be viewed from Hwy. 401, was still in the commissioning stage, but hoped it would producing green energy later in the afternoon. “We’re still in the commission or start-up stage,” said OPG spokesman John Earl, adding that after Thursday afternoon “at any time, if you look out at the blades, they may be turning and they may not be... you’ll see it stop and start.” The official launch of the wind- mill last Wednesday left a crowd of onlookers disappointed when the blades were left in the stall posi- tion. At the time, OPG officials an- ticipated the windmill would start spinning within a couple of days. Mr. Earl explained the Danish manufacturers of the windmill, Vestas, are still in Pickering testing components to ensure they meet the standards for the warranty be- fore turning operations over to OPG. He said the rotor-to-generator connection was expected to be test- ed yesterday, resulting in the first production of energy from the windmill. “Subject to wind conditions in the area the first electrical output is expected (Thursday),” he said, adding that more than 100 trip fault commands on the swivel-adjusted leading-edge technology will be tested over the next couple of weeks and the windmill is expected to be fully operational within the next two months. “As the tests continue, the wind- mill will be producing energy to the Pickering grid,” he said. Once the windmill is fully oper- ational it should be turning, at some level, 90 per cent of the time, Pickering resident assaulted by phony cop PICKERING —A Pickering resident is one of two men charged in the assault of a local couple by a man posing as a police officer. Durham Regional Police say a 19-year-old Pickering man and his girlfriend noticed a man in the dri- veway of the woman’s north Pick- ering home Sept. 3 at around 2 p.m. When the couple approached the man, dressed in a dark uniform and wearing a Kevlar vest, he identified himself as a police officer, said he was conducting a drug investiga- tion and asked for their identifica- tion. Police say the suspect showed a badge and asked the male victim to open the trunk of his vehicle. A/P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY EDITION, September 7, 2001 Union head says new program could limit time for after-school activities BY MIKE RUTA Staff Writer DURHAM —Ontario’s teacher testing program could limit the amount of time educa- tors can devote to extracurricular activities, says Shelley Page. The local president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation said a lot of details about the program, such as the cost and time com- mitment involved, are still un- known. “I think the implication is yes, it could (affect extracurricu- lars involvement),” said Ms. Page. While it could be argued a 70-hour commitment for the testing program over five years isn’t a large amount of time, she said teachers are still waiting for information such as where courses will be offered, and how much travel time will be in- volved. Ms. Page used the 70-hour number because each of the 14 courses a certified teacher must take every five years must be a minimum of five hours long. The Ontario College of Teachers, responsible for setting up and running the program, last month sent a letter to all its members, sharing what informa- tion it has on the professional learning program. There will be seven core courses teachers must take and seven electives, with choices in both areas, the college said, “from a wide-range of of- ferings”. The program begins this school year with the first 40,000 randomly chosen teach- ers, including those who began their career in the classroom this month. The college told teachers it “will do everything in its power” to make sure courses are accessi- ble across Ontario, that they will be beneficial to teachers and that “course delivery will be as con- venient as it can be”. Premier Mike Harris an- nounced almost two-and-a-half years ago, just prior to the last provincial election, that teacher testing would take place. Educators have opposed the initiative from the beginning and have threatened not to partici- pate. Education Ministry spokesman Rob Savage said the program requirements would in- clude “many of the professional training courses teachers are al- ready involved in”, suggesting it will not consume a lot of time. “What teachers will find is the requirements are quite man- ageable,” he said. Asked why it took so long from the time the program was announced to actually getting it going, Mr. Savage said it was not something that could be rushed. “There’s been policy work that’s been done, and certainly we wanted to be sure we got input from the college of teach- ers and others,” he said. “There was a lot of work put into this because it is important and we wanted to be sure it was done right.” Ms. Page said uncertainty over the program is one of a few reasons why extracurricular ac- tivities haven’t returned to local schools yet, though the year is still very young. As well, she said teachers are still working out the practical details of the collective agreement reached with the board in June. The windmill is part of OPG’s commitment to raise its green energy portfolio to 500 megawatts by 2005. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com It’s hard to take Ontario’s high school teachers seriously when they say they’ll flatly refuse to take part in mandated training and testing, then claim they may drop extracurriculars participation if they do decide to take the courses and tests. Talk about confusing the issues and confusing the public! Our understanding of the withdrawal from after-school activi- ties over the past three years was that teachers were being forced to spend too much time in the classroom and didn’t have the time needed to coach teams, direct plays, etc. Clearly, issues around teacher time have been resolved after years of fighting between teacher unions and the Ministry of Education, so the way seemed clear to finally bring extracurriculars back at the secondary school level. But now, Shelley Page, Durham president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, says the training/testing program could impact extracurriculars participation. We’re tired of student’s academic lives being put on the line every time teachers are unhappy with a government-instituted ini- tiative. Surely there are better ways of dealing with the situation. If Ontario’s teachers are as serious about defying the Province’s demand they take the courses and tests as they’ve said in the past, they should simply refuse, en masse, to take part. That was their most recent position. We’ve said before teachers face rigorous competition even getting into teachers’ college. Once there, they take part in a year-long program that covers every as- pect of teaching. Once they’ve become part of the system, they take part in professional development throughout the year. They have to catch up on new curriculum developments, have to stay on top of changes in computer technology. Those who seek advance- ment — and there are many — take extra university courses in their field of subject expertise during the summers. Not every teacher is a star, but then again we’re talking about more than 100,000 professionals across the province. The vast majority take their responsibilities seriously, are trained in what they do and shouldn’t be forced to undergo extra training and tests, especially on their own time and at their own expense. Considering the Province has spent more than $6 million pro- moting teacher testing/training to Ontario taxpayers, there is still much that isn’t certain about the program. Ministry spokesman Rob Savage says the program requirements include, “many of the professional training courses teachers are already involved in.” If that’s true, why bring these new courses in? Whatever the teachers decide to do in the end, extracurriculars should not be used as a bargaining chip. Enough damage has been done. Let’s get back to a true high school experience that makes the secondary school years the best of times for many of our young people. Yet again? Say it isn't so! Extracurriculars must be off table in latest teachers’, Province dispute ‘There goes my hero, he’s ordi- nary’— Foo Fighters. Song lyrics are open to interpreta- tion, but the Foo Fighters make an in- teresting point with their paradox. Heroes are seldom-obvious candi- dates for such status, just ordinary people who perform extraordinary feats when tried. For example, the thing which makes David and Goliath such a well-known and loved Bible story is that victory was secured by a lowly shepherd boy who dared to fight for his people while the army was too scared. Had David been an army gen- eral, paid to fight and protect, the bat- tle would be just another long-forgot- ten history lesson. What constitutes a ‘hero’ is worth considering since the term is bandied about so much these days. A publica- tion referred to a talk-show host as a ‘local hero’ recently. When Rocket Richard died last year, Lucien Bouchard said of him “he was a hero, he will be a hero forever” and he was accorded a state funeral. I’ve heard the Foo Fighters themselves referred to as “heroes”. To some, that Subway guy on TV, Jerod, is a hero. Maybe you are what you eat, after all. It’s absurd! For ex- ample, Mr. Richard was a talented hockey player, but how scoring goals makes him a ‘hero’ escapes me. (Of course if he could brew coffee too, like Tim Horton, it would be another story!) Heroes command respect for their extraordinary, usually selfless deeds. Heroes inspire us to greatness. These descriptions fit local police officer John Keating, who started CycleUSA and recently cycled about 100 kilome- tres a day to complete a ride across the United States to raise funds for, and awareness of, autism. Autism is a developmental disor- der that strikes about one in 500, in- cluding Mr. Keating’s son Kurtis. In its most severe forms it can render people unable to communicate or care for themselves. In less extreme cases (as in the movie ‘Rain Man’) sufferers still have difficulties coping in society. Frustrated by how little is known about the causes or how to best treat it, Mr. Keating decided to do something about it. When finished, he’d raised over $1 million U.S. for autism re- search and had educated numerous people along the way. The inspirational power of his message can be seen in events ranging from the 8-year-old boy with an autis- tic sister, who started a lemonade stand to raise funds for the cause, to the fact enough people are interested to make a fund-raising bike-a-thon for autism an annual event starting next year. With increased public awareness and research, autism is no longer quite the intimidating and unconquerable Goliath it once seemed. One can only dream what other menacing giants could be defeated if we all were even half as dedicated to causes close to our hearts. In this story, we look at the success of a cart pilot project that’s under way in Markham and the pos- sibility of repeating that effort here in Durham. BY SUSAN O’NEILL Staff Writer DURHAM —When garbage day rolls around each week in Markham, the resi- dents at 600 homes roll out of bed and roll their trash out to the curb. The municipality has asked residents to put away their blue boxes and garbage bags as it undertakes an innovative pilot project, ‘Markham’s on a roll’. Instead of using the traditional means of setting out garbage, residents in the study area are using two large ‘rollout’carts to dispose of waste, one for kitchen and organic materi- als, and the other, split into two sections, for recyclables and garbage. “While a handful of other municipali- ties use household rollout carts for kitchen and yard organic materials, no municipali- ty has ever tried using the ‘split’ card that holds recyclables on one side and garbage on the other,” Markham Mayor Don Cousens said shortly after the project was launched in early April. He also reported the volunteer project is a tremendous success in demonstrating homeowners can divert more than 60 per cent of their household waste. “The results have been extremely good,” agreed Markham Regional Council- lor Gordon Landon, who chairs York Re- gion’s waste management committee. “It’s better than any place in North America.” Coun. Landon reported between 62 and 65 per cent of the waste generated in the pilot area is being diverted from landfill. With those numbers, it’s easy to see why the program is attracting attention from municipalities around the country, in- cluding the City of Pickering. “The results speak for themselves,” said Pickering Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner, who is hopeful the City will agree to partner with Markham for the second phase of its pilot project, slated to get under way in October. “It’s very doable and very economical,” he said. Coun. Brenner reported if Pickering was to implement a similar six-month pilot project on its own it would cost roughly $450,000. However, if the City partners with Markham in the second phase, the cost would be less than $150,000. “It’s an opportunity that only comes along once,” he said. “I’m very optimistic this will pass.” Coun. Bren- ner also pointed out Markham is witnessing a 99-per cent par- ticipation rate among residents in the pilot area. “I think that’s remarkable,” he said. “Given the fact that it’s working that well in the target area in Markham, I am confi- dent it will work equally as well in Picker- ing.” Peter Veiga, the programs co-ordinator of Markham’s waste management division, said the municipality’s search for ways to reduce its waste stems from the planned closure of the Keele Valley Landfill Site next year. He predicted when that happens munic- ipalities will be facing significantly higher disposal costs. So, Markham is keen to explore options that will “decrease the costs and increase diversion at the same time,” he said. The cart program is actually the second of two waste-diversion initiatives Markham has undertaken in the past year. The first project, ‘Bag-It’, provided the residents of 600 homes with transparent plastic bags for recyclables and kitchen or- ganic waste. The project resulted in resi- dents diverting about 50 per cent of house- hold waste. “Organics are the key to any future program right now,” Mr. Veiga said, noting organic materials make up about one-third of the waste stream. To date, about 44 per cent of organic waste is being diverted in the cart pilot area, he said, adding 99 per cent of yard waste and between 87 and 91 per cent of recyclables are also being diverted from landfill. “We’re actually very happy with the re- sults so far,” he said, noting the Town’s av- erage waste-diversion rate is about 32 per cent. “Once you get the buy in, they’ll agree. People want to do the right thing,” he said. “Once they understand why, they want to make the community a better place.” He reported the municipality held a number of focus groups and produced a variety of educational materials before the project was implemented. And, he said the feedback since then has been very positive. “Initially some of the residents were a little upset because the carts were so big, but most of them came onside,” Coun. Landon reported. “I think they’re very efficient,” said Markham resident George Diamantakos in an interview outside his Sir Galahad Place home. “Generally I like the concept. I think the concept is a good idea.” Mr. Diamantakos noted, however, some of his neighbours have raised concerns about the size of the carts and the dif- ficulty they have in storing them. “In our particular case, it’s not a prob- lem because we have a place to store them,” said the 12-year resident of the town. “For our purpose it works fine.” He also noted getting used to separating his garbage into three streams has been fairly easy. But he said the Town should make it easier for residents to dispose of bulk items, which are too large for the carts. Meanwhile, Mr. Landon said residents in the pilot area benefit from not having to carry several garbage bags and a blue box out to the curb. And, the large carts outside homes create a much cleaner streetscape on garbage day. He also said the cart system is much easier on the drivers of the collection trucks because they don’t have to get out of the vehicle to lift garbage bags at every house. The collection trucks are equipped with an automatic arm that the truck driver op- erates from inside the vehicle. The me- chanical arm clamps onto one cart at a time, lifts it over the truck and empties it before placing the cart back on the curb. “The driver never gets out of the truck,” Mr. Veiga said, noting that not only creates a better situation for the drivers, but also creates a more efficient collection system. He said each truck can handle about 1,000 to 1,200 homes a day. “We’re proud of the fact we’ve got one of the highest diversion rates in the province... Markham has always had a very forward-thinking culture and our council is behind us on this.” In fact, York Region recently imple- mented a three-stream collection system. And,York Chairman Bill Fisch has said, “The next step is to assess which of the set-out options will be the most efficient and cost-effective — blue boxes, plastic bags or carts, or a combination of them all.” Coun. Landon said the municipality has decided to extend the cart project, slated to end in October, for another six months after receiving a $100,000 grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. He said the success of the project would then be evaluated when it wraps up next spring. “We’re hoping to be able to take it across the region if it’s as successful as the pilot,” he said. If that happens, York Region hopes its waste-diversion rate increases from 21 per cent to about 65 per cent. Durham works committee chairman and Pickering Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson also said he’s keen to ex- plore the possibility of implementing a cart system here. “I’ve been promoting it in Pickering for nine years now,” he said, noting he first came across the system during a waste management conference in Germany. “The carts work quite well in diverting from landfill,” he said. “It isn’t the end-all, but it is part of the building blocks we have to put together to reach a full diversion from landfill.” Cart-ing success in waste diversion Miller Waste employee Dennis LeBlanc lifts a ‘rollout’ cart into the truck. NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, September 7, 2001 PAGE 9 A/P No need to panic over water: Durham officials Health Canada finding ‘stuff that was never supposed to be there’ BY JACQUIE McINNES Staff Writer DURHAM —There may be more on tap in Durham homes than just water, but health officials here say there is like- ly no reason to panic. Health Canada has announced plans to begin environmental testing on sub- stances such as shampoos, birth control pills and medications to determine if they could be contaminating our drink- ing water. “We are finding stuff in our water that was never supposed to be there,” said Charles Ethier, director-general of Health Canada’s product safety pro- gram. He noted when people dump these substances down the toilet or the basin drain they can find their way back to the environment. Antibiotics, antide- pressants, blood pressure drugs, aspirin and hormones from birth control pills have all been detected in lakes and rivers near sewage plants. “It’s an emerging area where obvi- ously we have growing concerns,” said Mr. Ethier. Federal health officials will research possible risks from product additives. But even if ingredients from those products are finding their way into our taps, that does not necessarily mean there is a health crisis, suggested Ken Gorman, director of environmental health for the Durham Region Health Department. “It’s important to remem- ber because traces of things are found doesn’t mean it will cause ill effects,” he said. “It doesn’t mean the water is un- safe or will be unsafe. A lot of studies need to be done. What Health Canada is trying to do is an assessment.” It is still not known whether any of the substances are actually in Canadian tap water, but Chris Metcalfe, a Trent University environmental scientist and leading researcher in the area said, “These things could be cycling back into drinking water. We just don’t have enough information yet to really know whether that’s occurring.” Mr. Metcalfe said Health Canada is moving in the right direction but Cana- da needs to strengthen sewage treatment requirements. In Europe, he noted, there are better treatment systems and governments al- ready require pharmaceutical compa- nies to submit to environmental assess- ments before a drug for humans is mar- keted. Although scientists alerted offi- cials of the issue about two decades ago, it has only become a serious concern in recent years since testing methods have improved to the point they can pick up very tiny amounts of substances. After Sept. 13, Health Canada will require any company that wants to sell new products covered by the Food and Drug Act, to notify the government for consideration of potential environmen- tal effects. In August, General Motors of Canada saw 40,397 vehicles deliv- ered to dealers, down 4.1 per cent from the same month in 2000. GM sold 21,316 cars, down 5.9 per cent, and 19,081 trucks, down 2 per cent. Despite the decrease, GM is pleased with August’s results, said Dick Conlin, vice-president of sales, service and marketing. “The fact is the auto industry has been on a record sales streak over the past two years and relative to these periods, we are not surprised to see some moderation,” he said. “However, we still expect strong sales for the remainder of the calen- dar year and are on track to finish this year as the third best in the last 10.” In the year-to-date sales, this year’s total, 316,025, represents a 4.2-per cent decrease over the same period in 2000. Car sales are down 6.3 per cent while trucks are down 1.7 per cent. Big sellers last month were the Pontiac Montana, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe, Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire. George Olliver, a Juno-nominated singer and former lead vocalist of the legendary 1960s group ‘The Mandala’, hosts the second annual Ajax R and B Revival at the Sports Garden Café in Whitby Saturday, Sept 22. After more than 600 fans filled the Annandale Golf and Curling Club in Ajax for last year’s inaugural show, which featured George Olliver & Gang- buster with special guest Grant Smith, Olliver was spurred on to pull together another bill of top Canadian ‘60s R and B acts. This year, Luke and the Apostles will perform with special guests Mike McKenna & Mainline. Ajax’s Sum 41 rides wave to the top BY AL RIVETT Staff Editor AJAX — Ajax’s Sum 41 will be the musical guest on one of television’s most en- during and revered comedy shows next month. And, they can hardly wait, says one of its members. The pop/punk quartet will appear on NBC’s Saturday Night Live Oct. 6, along with host Ben Stiller. “It’s going to be amazing,” said Sum 41 guitarist and vo- calist Deryck Whibley, 21, in a telephone interview from Quebec City. “Ben Stiller is going to be the host, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.” Whibley (aka Bizzy D) noted the band’s manager passed along the news recent- ly, which met with a unani- mous thumbs-up from all members, including drummer Steve Jocz, 19, (Steveo32) bassist Jason McCaslin, 20, (Cone) and vocalist and gui- tarist Dave Baksh, 20 (Brown Sound). “He said you guys will be doing Saturday Night Live and we said ‘All right’!” It’s not the only piece of good news Sum 41 has re- ceived of late. The band re- ceived four nominations for the upcoming MuchMusic Video Awards. The nomina- tions are for the videos ‘Fat Lip/Pain for Pleasure’ which has enjoyed heavy rotation on both MuchMusic and MTV in the U.S., and for ‘Makes No Difference’. Two nomina- tions — favourite Canadian group and favourite video by a Canadian — are voted on by fans. The MuchMusic nomina- tions, said Whibley, were un- expected. “We had no idea. We did- n’t know that,” said Whibley, genuinely surprised by the news. “We never expected that to happen. It’s a big sur- prise.” The group’s first video ‘Fat Lip/Pain for Pleasure’ from its gold-selling album ‘All Killer No Filler’, re- leased in May on the Is- land/Def Jam label (Aquar- ius/DKD in Canada) has been an especially big hit with U.S. audiences. The video has been a popular one on the MTV show ‘Total Request Live’ where viewers have consistently voted it to the top position in the past month ahead of such acts as Jennifer Lopez and the Backstreet Boys. Whibley said he’s still in awe of how much success the video has garnered both in Canada and the U.S., espe- cially since the group’s first video ‘Makes No Difference’ didn’t make as big an impact with audiences. “The video before that didn’t do much. We thought that with this one, we expect- ed it wouldn’t get played. But, definitely, it’s been a great surprise for us,” he said. Earlier this month, Sum 41 was one of several acts to perform at MTV’s recent 20th anniversary bash ‘MTV20: Live and Almost Legal’ in New York City. Whibley said it was not only “great” to perform, but also an excellent chance to meet the many celebrities at the gala affair. “We got to open up the show,” said Whibley. “We got to meet a lot of cool people there”, including Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, and Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, to name a few. Sum 41 has emerged as one of the hottest touring acts on both sides of the border this summer. The band mem- bers have been the quintes- sential road warriors, with non-stop touring in support of ‘All Killer No Filler’. Cur- rently, the band is finishing the Canadian leg of the ‘Warped’tour with headliners Blink 182. The band was in Toronto at the annual ‘Edge- fest’ concert and the Molson Amphitheatre Aug. 25. The ‘Warped’ tour wraps up in October and after a brief trip to Europe, Sum 41 will be back on the road. However this time it will be as the headlining act, which will take the band through the southern U.S. and eastern seaboard until December when the tour ends in Min- neapolis Dec. 29. In the midst of a hectic touring schedule, the band managed to put the finishing touches on ‘In Too Deep’ — its follow-up video to ‘Fat Lip/Pain for Pleasure’. The video, shot in Los Angeles, is expected to debut this month and is a send-up of the Rod- ney Dangerfield movie ‘Back to School’. Whibley pointed out that although the band has done some demo work with new material, he said it’s “too early” to contemplate work on a new album. The Red Sox opened the eight- team OBA championships with a 9-4 win over Kitchener. Kitchener held a slim lead early in the contest, but Pickering over- took their opponents in the third inning and never looked back en route to the victory. In the second game, Pickering met the powerful Mississauga Tigers. The game was tied 1-1 through three innings, but a cou- ple of Red Sox errors opened the doors for the Tigers on their way to a 6-1 win. In a do-or-die contest against a strong Brampton Royals squad, the Pickering mosquitoes battled gamely through the first five in- nings, trailing by only a 3-2 count. After Brampton scored four runs in the top of the sixth for a 7-2 lead, the Sox responded with four of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The Royals scored twice in the seventh, leaving the Sox with one last shot. Two singles and two doubles made it a 9-8 game with the tying run at third base with two out. A hard-hit ball fielded cleanly by the Brampton outfield- er ended the tournament and the season for the Red Sox. The mosquito Red Sox earned a spot in the OBA playdowns after emerging from a recent 27-team mega-qualifying tournament with a 3-1 mark. Pickering defeated Waterloo, North York and Brant- ford, with its lone loss against Windsor. Royals leave Red Sox blue Pickering Pioneers getting their kicks Twin sister act hits the American collegiate soccer pitch for Sacred Heart BY AL RIVETT Sports Editor PICKERING —A set of Pickering twins plan to give their soccer opponents double trouble when they take to the field with the Sacred Heart University Pio- neers for their freshman seasons. Jasmine and Nathalie Urbas, 19, both signed on to play Na- tional Collegiate Athletic Associ- ation Division 1 women’s soccer with the Pioneers of Fairfield, Connecticut. After a gruelling three-a-day training schedule through late August, the Pioneers started play this past weekend in Burlington, Vermont. In back-to-back non- conference games, the Pioneers lost 3-1 to the University of Ver- mont Sept. 1, then dropped a 1-0 decision to the University of New Hampshire Sept. 2. The Pioneers play in the Northeastern Conference against such teams as Fairleigh Dickin- son, Monmouth, Long Island and Central Connecticut State. Sacred Heart begins its conference schedule Sept. 11 against Quin- nipiac. The sisters, the only Canadi- ans on the Pioneers’ roster, note they were prepared for the heightened expectations and training that goes hand in hand with joining a Division 1 soccer program. “I think the sessions are an ex- cellent start to prepare for the season simply because every win- ning game comes down to whichever team is the fittest,” said Jasmine, a sweeper with the team. Nathalie plays the striker position. Playing together at the same U.S. school was a no-brainer for the Urbas sisters. They’ve been playing on the same teams in the Pickering Soccer Club since age four. And, being away from one another was not something they wanted to contemplate. “Being twins, we always wanted to go to the same school,” said Jasmine. “If Nathalie were to attend a different school it would feel like a piece of me was miss- ing.” The sisters learned about the soccer program at Sacred Heart University via e-mail. After Pio- neers’ women’s soccer coach Joe Barroso expressed an interest in having them attend the school, everything fell into place. And, they’re happy to be attending the college. “Now that we’re here, we ab- solutely love it,” said Jasmine. “It was always a dream to get a scholarship because we wanted to prove to ourselves that if we want something and we work hard enough we can do it.” Sacred Heart, explained Jas- mine, is still a relatively young program having only played three seasons at the Division 1 level. Last year, the Pioneers finished with a 6-8-4 record. The team is only losing two senior players this season, which opened up the roster spots for the Pickering duo. After playing with the Picker- ing Soccer Club for 10 years, the Urbas sisters suited up for the North York Cosmos women’s under-19 soccer team this past summer. The team, which fin- ished near the top of the league, helped them prepare for the tran- sition to the college ranks. “I feel that I have grown indi- vidually from playing with the girls and the coaches,” said Jas- mine. “They never put me down for making a mistake and allowed me to reach my full potential.” In addition to playing on the same soccer team, the Urbas sis- ters will also take the same col- lege course — elementary educa- tion. Nathalie will major in sci- ence, while Jasmine will major in history or English. Playing five consecutive games without a break, the Heat advanced to the champi- onship game only to run out of gas in a 9- 4 loss to Campbellford. The battery of pitcher Matt Lahey and catcher Kyle van de Bospoort worked well in the losing cause. Chris Seebeck, Daniel Keith, Lahey and Robert Hair scored runs for the Heat. Pickering played the hometown Smith Falls club in its opener, earning a 5-3 vic- tory. Lahey earned the win on the mound, with catcher Ryan Head calling a superb game. Keith led the squad with three runs, while Seebeck and Lahey also scored. Next, the Heat cooled off with an 8-5 loss to Wiarton. The loss to Wiarton meant Pickering would go into the loser’s side of the tour- nament bracket and would face a steep, up- hill climb to get back to the championship side. Lahey took the loss on the mound. Head was sent to hospital after being struck in the face by a pitch. With no dam- age done, he returned to play the remainder of the tourney. Justin Galego, Seebeck, Keith, Lahey and Hair scored the Pickering runs against Wiarton. Head and Devon Tannahill shared the catching duties. Pickering was back on the winning track with an 8-7 victory over Frankford. Hair scored two runs, while Keith, Gal- lego, Lahey, van de Bospoort, Brian Mor- son and Steven Kennedy scored one run apiece. In the seventh inning,Aaron Morris was inserted into the lineup as a pinch-hitter with the winning run in scoring position. Morris blasted a long hit to deep left field to score the winning run. Hair and Lahey shared the pitching duties. The Pickering Heat then bested Brad- ford 10-7. Hair and Lahey pitched and earned the win. Galego led the offence with three runs, Keith and Kennedy scored twice, and single runs went to Head, Seebeck and Morris. The Pickering peewees played Wiarton again and this time doubled the squad with a 12-6 count. The victory over Wiarton moved Picker- ing into the championship game.
