From the heart
Durhampatients o
for cardiac care centre
BY MAR[ANNE TAKACS
Staff Writer
A dozen heart patients, including
three from Durham Region, have
launched a campaign to get public
support for the establishment of a
full-service cardiac: care centre at
the Centenary Health Centre in
Scarborough.
The establishment of full cardiac
care services at Centenary, which is
part of the Rouge Valley Health
System together with the Ajax and
Pickering Health Centre, would
allow Scarborough and Durham
residents to go there for procedures
such as heart bypass surgery, in-
stead of having to travel to hospitals
in central Toronto far from their
homes, families and friends.
The Cardiac Care Task Force, as
the 12 -member group calls itself, is
circulating cards for people to sign
which state they are in support of
having the service at Centenary.
Thcy'rc available at both the Scar-
borough and Ajax hospital sites, as
well as. places such as local church-
es. service clubs, seniors' clubs,
pharmacies and doctors' offices.
According to task force member
Phil Diamond of Whitby. 700 of the
cards were already returned with

in September at St. Michael's Hos-
pital in Toronto, which currently
provides that surgery along with the
Toronto Hospital and the Sunny -
brook Health Sciences Centre. He
says the fact he had to have it done
in Toronto made the experience
more difficult.
"I was stressed out. I felt a long
way from home. I felt like I was in
a foreign land"
It was hard for family and
friends to travel to visit. As well, the
location of the hospital in a part of
the city that is somewhat threaten-
ing at night added to the problem.
"My wife left the hospital at 9 or
10 o'clock at night. I worried if the
car was going to be there and if she
would make it to the car"
He says, the principal reason be-
hind adding full cardiac services
anywhere is to improve access to
needed medical care, particularly
heart bypass surgery.
"Zine waiting list is quite exten-
sive and the waiting list contributes
to increased costs because they have
to bong some of the patients into the
hospital and hold them there until
they get their turn, because they're
too sick to be at home explains Mr.
Diamond. He says there's just no
more room to expand the service at
the downtown Toronto hospitals.

Foodfor the hungry
Students at Frenchman's Bay Public School in Pickering have
been in the spirit of giving during the Christmas season and
helped collect a load of food for the Salvation Army to distribute
to needy families in Ajax and Pickering. Grade 8 students (from

with the packaging before handing the food over to the Salvation

New'standardized report
cards make the grade
Paresis, educators agree evaluation forms -
`a definite improvement'
BY SUSAN O'NEILL
Staff Writer
The Province's new standardized
report cards are receiving a passing
grade from Durham parents, many of
whom are getting their first look at the
new evaluation forms this week.
"It's a definite improvement;" says
Wendy Stanyon. a parent at Whitby's
Glen Dhu Public School. "it will help
in planning both with the teacher and
at home as to how you can assist your
child in the areas they need help in:'
The Province's new report cards,
introduced last year, have been re-
worked to correspond with the new
curriculum and are designed to provide
parents a clearer picture of a child's
abilities in order to give them a better
understanding of where their young-
ster stands.
Both parents and educators say the
new report cards give parents more
specific information about how their
child is doing in class.
"I really like the fact the report
cards indicate a child's strengths.
weaknesses and the areas the child has
to work on. i think that's very good,"
says John Sheremeta, chairman of the
school community council at William
Dunbar Public School in Pickering.
He adds the old report cards "told
you what you wanted to hear about
your child. Everything had a positive
spin. Now, there's some clear hard
facts, indicated not only by letter grade
but in the comment section as well"
Colin Edgccombe, principal of St.
Bernadette Catholic School in Ajax,
says, "I think it presents parents with
an excellent picture. It's a starting
point for the (parent -teacher) confer-
ence which is the most important part
(of the reporting process)"
While the new report cards were in-
troduced at Catholic elementary
schools in Durham last year, parents
and students at 61 of the Durham Dis-
trict School Board's 97 elementary
schools are seeing the new evaluation
forms for the first time this fall.
"The report card is the most critical
piece of information we send home on
a regular basis;' says Bev Freedman,
superintendent of programs for the
public board. So the board sent a guide
on the new report cards home with stu-
dents so parents will have a better un-
derstanding of the evaluation forms
,arch the Province's new standards.

The new report cards will be issued
at least three times a year.

Durham proposes rate hike for water use
BY KEITH
GILLIGAN
Staff' Writer
It could cost
you more to turn
on the tap next
year, but you
won't be taking a
bath.
A recommen-
dation that will
he considered by
Durham Council
next Wednesday
calls for increas-
es of 2.4 per cent
in the combined
water and sani-
tary sewer rate
charges.
So, a home-
owner using the
average 60,000
gallons of water
in 1999 will pay
about $8.40 more
over a full year,
increasing their
bill to $360.24
annually or
$90.06 per quar-
ter.
A Durham
household that
uses 100,000 gal-
lons a year will
pay about $3
more a quarter
than at present.
Council's
joint works and
finance commit-
tees approved the
increases without
comment at its
meeting this past
Wednesday.
A staff report
on the matter
notes there was
no increase in
water or sanitary
sewer rates from
1993 to '97 in-
clusive and the
charges rose two
per cent last year
while the cost of
living went up
eight per cent
from 1992 to
1998.
The combined
water and sewer
rates are lower
than other utili-
ties in Durham,
according to a
staff report.
The report
states the annual
cost of hydro for
a year is $761,
gas $1,051, tele-
phone $497 and
cable TV $445.
The report
stated the aver-
age combined
water and sewer
increase is 2.4
per cent, which
will vary for in-
dividual cus-
tomers.
Water rates
are going up five
per cent, but
sewer rates are
remaining the
same.

Gays in the community
deserve our acceptance
Surely we can offer everyone
the same level of respect and dignity
Being gav in Durham is a tough
lot in life. At least that's the verdict
delivered to our newspaper by the
men and women who came forward
to speak about their experiences over
the last few, years in our region.
In fact, it's still so tough that many
more who contacted us, wished to re-
main 'in the closet.' We had a letter
from a senior citizen which talked of
his pain at having to hide his sexual-
ity.
Others talked about the stares, the
slurs. the threats and the ostracizing
they get on a daily basis from neigh-
bours, co-workers and strangers they-
meet
heymeet on our streets.
It shouldn't be this way.
The Canadian Charter of Rights
and Freedoms clearly defends the
rights of all to freedom from discrim-
ination on the basis of sexual orienta-
tion.
However, it's one thing to have
your rights enshrined in law, quite
another to have people accept you for
who you arc.
All the gays and lesbians who
spoke to our reporter for our three-
part series essentially stated the same
thing: they just wanted to he treated
like anybody else by the people they
meet in their lives.
It's not a lot to ask — something
any straight person takes for granted.
Instead of hiding behind his drapes,
as one man in our series says he's
forced to do, or keeping his sexuality
a secret as another man admitted, the
gays and lesbians of Durham want to
be free to be who they are.
They want the right to walk hand-
in-hand with their loved ones down
our streets without being threatened,
to share a meal or drink in our restau-
rants and bars without being insulted,
to live together in homes and apart-
ments without having their abodes
vandalized.
Certainly, the gay life has been ac-
cepted in most big North American
centres, including San Francisco,
New York and Toronto. Each of these
major urban areas has a thriving gay
and lesbian community where they
are largely accepted.
It will be one way in future of
judging just how progressive the peo-
ple of Durham Region are. Surely,
we*ve come far enough as we enter a
new millennium that we can accept
and treat people with respect and dig-
nity, regardless of their sexual orien-
tation.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
No runways or
run -away growth
To the editor:
As president of the Pickering
Township Historical Society, I'd
like to comment on a recent letter
from Bill Belfry, in which he chas-
tised your paper for its coverage of
anti -airport efforts.
First, 1'd like to agree with him
that most Durham residents arc in
favour of, or indifferent to, a Pick-
ering airport. In fact I'm sure they
were in favour of reaping the eco -
New report cards make the grade
New style of documenting student performance rates a B+
The new Provincial Report Card is
here and by most accounts seems to be
a hit with parents.
The new report card measures in a
way different but not totally dissimilar
from those we are accustomed to. Stu-
dents are graded by letter in Grades 1
to 6, percentage in Grades 7 and 8, as
well as by level — I to 4 — with 1
being below the provincial standard
and 4 exceeding the provincial stan-
dard. The most important change is
each parent is seeing the same basic
card.
A short survey in our building re-
veals parents believe the report card is
easy to read, clearly defines how the
student has been graded and provides
considerable space for both teacher
and parent comments. But, some
questions remain about what is re-
quired to receive an A or Level 4 under
the new evaluation system.
According to the Provincial Guide
for Grading, a student who achieves
Level 4, or an A, has demonstrated the
.fequired knowledge and skills.
Achievement exceeds the provincial
standard. A student who achieves
Joanne
Burghardt
Editor -in -Chief
Level 3, a B, has demonstrated most
of the required knowledge and skills.
Achievement meets the provincial
standard.
What level of work qualifies for an
A is a matter for debate. Ore parent
reports her school advised A would be
a near -impossible achievement for any
student — and there were none. An-
other reports that the requirements of
an A are at the teacher's discretion.
Some confusion was caused by the de-
finition of Level 4 first delivered by
the Ministry of Education. Many took
it to mean Level 4 achievement is be-
yond grade level. That's an interpreta-
tion Bev Freedman, superintendent of
programs for the Durham District
School Board, points out is unreason-
able because we can't expect to see
signs of above -grade work if the stu-
dent hasn't been taught the material.
She explains if your child is
achieving a B it is a very solid mark.
The likelihood of seeing an A is slight-
ly diminished this year because grad-
ing is being done differently. While a
good attitude and initiative last term
might have pushed your child from a
B to an A, that's not as likely to hap-
pen this year because those learning
skills are graded elsewhere on the re-
port card.
Awned with a copy of the grade -
level curriculum, a report card and ac-
companying parents' guide, parents
should have a very clear picture of
their child's progress. If in doubt, ask
your child's teacher for a portfolio of
his work which should clearly demon-
strate how the teacher determined the
grades -
The report card details most of the
required knowledge and skills.
Achievement meets the parental stan-
dard We'll give it a B+ (that's 70-79
for the more traditional, Level 3 if
you're into rubrics).
nomic benefits of the Brock West
dump and the Pickering nuclear
plant too, so long as there was no
detrimental effect to their own
lifestyles in Whitby. Oshawa and
beyond. But this issue is about
Pickering and its status as the utili-
ty shed of the Greater Toronto Area.
Ask a Pickering resident about their
desire to live beneath a flight path
and a different story emerges. l
We are living through climatic
change. The great aquifer that feeds
the American breadbasket is drying
up and the consequences will soon
be chilling in scope. What good is
short-term economic benefit if we,
within our lifetimes, end up paying
$8.50 for a loaf of bread? Sure, I
pulled that sum out of my hat, but it
illustrates the insanity of paving
over farmland which we will need
to avert a food crisis.
At a recent society meeting, I
asked members for input on our in-
tention to issue a statement against
an airport in Pickering. Out of 45
individuals, one was in favour on
the basis of economic gain. While
this poll was only moderately more
statistical than Mr. Belfry's asser-
tion of his "belief', the trend is
clear. The Pickering Township His-
torical Society is opposed to a Pick-
ering airport on the basis of its
threats to our quality of life, to the
historical and archaeological re-
sources which define us as a culture
and to the farmlands which will
feed our children. We support the
creation of agricultural preserves
and the revitalization of the land,
not runway development or run-
away development
Finally, to the News Advertiser,
you do a fine job of uniting us as a
knowledgeable community. Keep
on reporting the stories that are im-
portant to the residents of Pickering
and Ajax. Sorry, Mr. Belfry, I don't
think you speak for Pickering.

Durham students celebrate Em
50 years of human rights
Lieutenant -Governor urges young people to fight the good fight
BY LINDA WHITE
Staff Writer
It was an evening when stu-
dents of diverse cultural back-
grounds and with varying physical
challenges came together to celc-
brate the common human rights
that allow them to live without
fear.
Pickering's Dunbarton High
School students Andrea Bowes -
Lyon, Shclley-Ann Brown, Denise
Lebar and Darryl Sinanan ap-
plauded the rights that allowed
them to perform a song they had
written for a human rights celebra-
tion held at the Durham District
School Board headquarters Thurs-
day.
"Fifty years ago they sang a
different song. They sang a song
of bondage we could not over-
come ... Now because of them,
can sing freedom songs ... Thank
you for your gift to me;" they sang
before a crowd of approximately
150.
Oshawa's Cedardale Public
School student Ashley Lisinski ap-
plauded the rights that allow her to
attend school and dream of college
and a career despite being visually
impaired.
Fellow Oshawa student Rachel
Brown of R.S. McLaughlin Colle-
giate and Vocational Institute,
wrote about a "utopia" in which
everyone has the same rights. "We
cannot change the past, but if we
want to change the future, we must
work together."
And while many Canadians
take for granted the rights they
enjoy, they "cannot be smug;' said

Declaration of Human Rights.

Ms. Weston was among the
dignitaries who attended the cele-

who shared her thoughts on
human rights.
"We know that throughout the

the United Nations and countries
like Canada, there are still human

"'A'c can choose to help end
human rights violations, or we can

The celebration was the brain-
hild of Whitby's Sinclair Sec-

gether Against Racism (STAR)
leadership conference put on by
the board. She was "delighted and
touched" by the hundreds of sub-
missions from students and staff.

Mderson slams MPPs absent from GTSB debate
BY KFJr'rr GILUGAN
Staff Writer
Durham's chairman is peeved
that none of the region's MPPs
_ stood up in the Ontario Legislature
late Thursday night to express area
politicians' opposition to the estab-
lishment of the Greater Toronto Ser-
vices Board.
In fact, all but one local Progres-
sive Conservative MPP was absent
when Bill 56 received third reading
around 11:40 p.m. It now awaits
royal assent before becoming law.
The provincial government wants
the new body in place for Jan. 1.
Durham Chairman Roger An-
derson says he's both disappointed
and surprised at the passage of the
bill as the Region and all eight
member municipalities have op-
posed establishment of a GTSB.
Approval of the bill indicates
"our MPPs aren't listening to our
concerts." Mr. Anderson charges.
"I'm more surprised they would do
it at that time of night with only 23
members in the house."
Earlier in the week, a standing
committee headed by Durham East
MPP John O'Toole finished hear-
ings on the GTSB legislation and
failed to include any of the amend-
ments the Region wanted, Mr. An-
derson notes.
For example, Durham wanted a
stronger opting -out provision and
more protection for rural areas.
As it now stands, the services
board will help co-ordinate transit
and transportation issues in the
GTA, including operating GO Tran-
sit, and overseeing economic devel-
opment.
Mr. Anderson is most upset that
no local Tories took part in the vote.
"I'm very disappointed no
Durham MPPs were on the floor
when the vote was called"
While he wasn't on the floor for
the vote, Mr. O'Toole was in the
gallery of the legislature talking
with Mr. Anderson when the vote
was called
"We were under the impression
the vote would be on Monday, Mr.
Anderson notes.
Durham West MPP Janet Ecker
says she wasn't on house duty
Thursday night.
"We have a duty roster of MPPs
for when we're on duty. I was
scheduled to be at other events in
the riding," the Community and So-
cial Services Minister adds.
Ms. Ecker says she supports the
GTSB "because we need in the
Greater Toronto Area a vehicle to
co-ordinate transportation and eco -
normo development. All we have to
do is look at the roads in Durham
Region and how they don't connect
with Toronto to see we need co-or-
dination.
"I don't support another level of
government. We have enough levels
in Durham. This is not another level
of government. I wouldn't support
this if it was another level. I don't
believe it should be replacing the
Region of Durham. In 20 years
from now, who knows? But, today
and tomorrow, we don't need anoth-
er level of government."
Mr. Anderson reports the first
meeting of the GTSB is set for Jan.
15 although the location hasn't been
decided. "It will be somewhere in
notch Toronto.
"I guess we'll be showing up to
protect Durham's interest, wherever
the meetings are"

PICKERING — The Town is
planning to take a lead role in
bringing other governments to the
table to find an alternative to fed-
eral designation of an airport site
here.
Council voted Tlonday to re-
quest Ottawa not to follow
through on its Jul,* announcement
that federal lands in north Picker-
ing would be officially designated
for airport use under the federal
Aeronautics Act.
Instead, Pickering asked Ot-
tawa to wait for the result of fur-
ther talks on alternatives to desig-
nation — such as zoning bylaws,
provisions in local and regional
officials plans, provincial zoning
orders and conservation agree-
ments — to prevent development
around the federal property that
would be incompatible with fu-
ture construction of an airport.
Pickering will contact Trans-
port Canada, the Regions of
Durham and York (as a portion of
the lands expropriated by Ottawa
for the airport in 1972 extend into
York). the Towns of Ajax,
Markham and NVhitchurch-Stouf-

three months"
He added two to three years
would be more likely.
Coun. Pickles noted Pickering
would not have been as successful
as it has in getting the designation
process delayed if it hadn't been
for the "strong support from the
community" Council has rc-
ceived.
One of the major sources of
that support, Voters Organized to
Cancel the Airport Lands
(VOCAL) president Stephen
Frederick, says his group is "quite
happy with" what Pickering and
Durham have done.
"The ball is now squarely in
Mayor Arthurs' court to co-ordi-
nate the meeting and get it up and
off the ground;' he says.
Mr. Frederick notes all but two
of the communities with an inter-
est in the airport process — Ajax
and Markham — are already on
side with Pickering.
He expects Ajax will join the
group when Ajax Council consid-
ers the issue next week, and
VOCAL is planning to take its ar-
guments against designation be-
fore Markham Council next week.
If the hoped-for talks do even-
tually start, Mr. Frederick expects
the feds will tx: relatively co-op-
erative because they'll be eager
for a way to deal with an issue
that's been "a thorn in their side
for 27 years".
As for the municipalities, he
says they should recognize it's in
their best interest to participate in
the determination of their des-
tinies on this issue rather than
having others decide it for them.

I've often stressed in this
column that. "He who
treats himself has a fool for
a patient" In the great ma-
jority of instances this dic-
tum still rings true. if you
have a medical problem see
your doctor.
But there are occasions
today when relying totally
on your doctor's advice can
be terribly hazardous.
"Proactive" is now the buzz
word I
Here's what happened to
a good friend of mine. Five
years ago he went for a rou-
tine medical checkup. The
result?
A diagnosis of cancer of
the prostate gland, fairly
advanced.
He was treated by
surgery, a radical prostatec-
tomy. Later a program of
radiation therapy was fol-
lowed in the U.S. at a fa-
mous clinic.
Five years later my
friend received good news.
Doctors at the clinic were
unable to find any evidence
of recurrent disease.
But there the good news
ended.
During the last year he
had informed his family
doctor of rectal bleeding.
This doctor reassured him
there was no need to worry.
Previous studies showed he
suffered from diverticulitis,
inflamed herniations of the
large bowel.
The doctor claimed this
problem accounted for the
bleeding.
A short time later the pa-
tient returned to the urolo-
gist who had performed the
radical prostatectomy.
During this annual uro-
logical checkup he again
mentioned the rectal bleed-
ing.
The urologist main-
tained it was due to the ra-
diation he had received five
years earlier in the U.S.
My friend was also seen
yearly at the U.S. clinic.
And for the third time he
mentioned the presence of
rectal bleeding.
Again he was told it was
due to either diverticulitis
or from previous radiation
therapy.
None of these doctors
suggested an examination
of the large bowel.
Later that vicar he visited
the Far East with his wife.
During this trip his wife de-
veloped a severe and con-
tinuing bowel infection.
Her doctor ordered a
colonoscopy on her return
home.
And hearing that her
husband had rectal bleed-
ing suggested he too should
have this procedure.
Colonoscopy on his wife
revealed nothing of note.
His own colonoscopy
showed a large bowel ma-
lignancy that had penetrat-
ed the outer wall of the in-
testine.
. This required immediate
surgery followed by
chemotherapy.
But how could three
doctors make such a drastic
error'?
,Possibly the family doc-
tor had too many patients to

see that day and assumed
specialists were overseeing
the medical care.
But what about the urol-
ogist:' Perhaps he believed
the bleeding was due to ra-
diation, and that the family
doctor would handle this
problem.
And the urologist at the
clinic'?
This is where specializa-
tion may have played a fac-
tor. My friend hadn't at-
tended the clinic for a gen-
eral checkup.
Only a urological one.
Of course the urologist
should have referred him to
a gastroenterologist at the
clinic. But for reasons we'll
never know this didn't hap-
pen.
This case dramatically
shows that in some in-
stances you can be your
own best diagnostician. My
intelligent business friend
should never have rested
solely on the opinion of
these doctors.
1 have to admit that
when three physicians tell
you not to worry it's hard
not to accept their advice.
But good sense should

MPP Ecker touts
disability rights bill
But advocates say it's `worthless'
BY MARIANNE TAKAC'S
Stuff Writer
'17he Ontario government's proposed
disability rights hill is "worthless" and
an insult to the handicapped, according
to a local member of the province -wide
,:onmrittee formed to lobby for new dis-
ability legislation.
At does nothing to effectively identi-
ty, remove or prevent barriers for people
With disabilities in our province;' says
Sandy Russill of the Ontarians with Dis-
abilities Act Committee (ODAC), who's
also president of the Canadian Hard of
Hearing Association's
Pic kering/Ajax/Whitby branch. "We do
not accept Bill 83 as it now stands. It
does not require that a single harrier be
removed by anyone. It includes no en-
forcement and no penalties. It even for-
bids the courts from enforcing it. Ontar-
tans with disabilities deserve better."
ODAC is calling on all MPPs, in-
Auding members of the governing Pro-
gressive Conservative party, to oppose
the bill and ask Premier Mike Harris to
withdraw it immediately. The organiza-
tion is also urging the disabled and any-
one who want% to see an effective dis-
ability rights act to write, phone or fax
%IPPS to express their disappointment
with the proposed legislation.
Bill 83, or the Ontarians with Dis-
abilities Act, was given fret reading in
the provincial legislature Nov. 23. It re-
quires every government minister to an-
nually "prepare a plan for the identifica-
tion, removal and prevention of barriers
to persons with disabilities in his or her
ministry's legislation, policies, pro-
grams, practices and services." A review
of the effectiveness of the act is to be un-
dertaken within five years. The; bill also
states, "No new cause of action, right of
appeal, claim or other remedy exists in
law because of this act or because of
anything dome or omitted to be done
under this act"
Ms. Russill maintains Premier Harris
has broken two election promises
one to bring forward strong legislation

to effectively eliminate barriers for dis-
abled people, and another to work to-
gether with ODAC to develop that legis-
lation.
She also notes it's "very dishearten-
ing" Durham West MPP and Minister of
Community and Social Services Janet
Ecker is supporting Bill 83 instead of
pushing for more effective legislation on
behalf of her constituents.
Ms. Ecker, however, maintains the
bill is "the best piece of legislation of its
kind" in Canada.
"It mandates government ministries
to systematically review all of their leg-
islation, programs, polices, practices
and services to improve access;' she
says. "It's a serious step forward"
She points to other measures under-
taken this term by the Harris govern-
ment — an income and employment
support program for disabled people,
new assistance for the learning disabled
and improvements to the Ontario Build-
ing Code — as evidence concrete action
is being taken to remove barriers.
Ms. Ecker says the new act does not
need enforcement and penalty provi-
sions.

Myelin fund-raiser nets $4,400
Memory of Matt Simmons honoured

This time of year is special. It's a
time for counting our blessings, for
reaching out with love and generosity to
family, friends and those less fortunate.
But in the excitement of the holiday
season let us not forget our other friends
the animals.
By purchasing a set of special holi-
day cards from the Humane Society of
Canada (HSC), you can help them fund
their many programs here in Canada
aimed at easing the plight and suffering
of countless animals — from cats and
dogs to whales and bears to horses and
birds.
Here is a list of some of the work ac-
complished by the HSC this year:
• offered award for pinpointing the per-
son who brutally shot and killed a fam-
ily dog in Kamloops, B.C.;
• helped law enforcement officers catch
wildlife traffickers trading in bear parts;
• battled to save whales off the coast of
British Columbia fFrom devastating acts
of cruelty;
•stopped a bullfight scheduled to take
_+ place in Montreal.
The cards not only capture the spirit
of the Christmas season, but they sym-
bolize what the Humane Society is all
about.
A set costs $25 for 40 cards. If you
would like to buy a set of cards call 1-
800 -641 -KIND, and they will send
them out the same day.
Anthony Stilt, Stun Kantutitiski, (at
front) Todd McCarthy, Paul Woodcraft
and Jacki Siwek. A fund-raiser was held
in memory of Matthew Simmons, a for-
mer trustee with the Durham Catholic
District School Board.
A recent fund-raising dinner and dance
held in Durham Region had two aims —
and reached both of its targets.
The memory of Matthew Simmons, a
former Durham Catholic District School
Board trustee, was honored by 225 family
members, friends and associates and
$4,400 was raised toward finding a cure
for myelin disease.
Mr. Simmons passed away Oct. 16,
1997 of adrenomyeloneuropathy, a rare
disease included under the umbrella of'
myelin disease.
The money raised was donated to the
Nl%elin Project, a non-profit organization
of neurologists, researchers and lay people
working toward a cure for myelin disease,
which affects sonic 3()001) people in
North America, approximately 50,000 of
them in Canada.
Each year thousands of children and
adults fall prey to such diseases, like the
many leukodystrophies and multiple scle-
rosis.
The goal of the Myelin Project of Cana-
da is to develop an effective strategy to re-
myelinate the human central nervous sys-
tem.
The organization was founded in 1994
by Mississauga residents Wayne and Julie
Simmons (no relation to the late Matthew
Simmons).
Their daughter Emily, now seven -years -
old, was born with myelin disease and is

Matt Simmons's sister, Joanne Stycuk
helped organize the recent dinner and
dance fund-raiser.
She says other members of her family
have also been affected by the disease. Her
son, Peter Michael, has the childhood form
of the illness, called adrenoleukodystro-
phy.
Another of her brothers died of the dis-
ease in 1997.
Her mother's father died in 1949 of
something doctors of the time labelled
'black diphtheria,' but now it's assumed he
had a myelin -related disorder.
Ms. Stvcuk says her son is currently
doing well after a bone marrow transplant
last year, apparently the first successful
operation of its kind at the Toronto Hospi-
tal for Sick Children in treating this dis-
ease.
She points out that with help it could be
the beginning of good things for many
other children suffering from the same
fate.
