Let no one involved in trying to sneak this development by the taxpay- ing public he under any illusion. The villagers of Claremont and the sur- rounding area will fight this all the way. There is no rational reason for even considering an airport at the mo- ment, and the idea of building one within the next five years is absurd. It appears that few Durham resi- dents are aware of recent develop- ments that will see an airport built on lands between Taunton Road and Hwy. 7. Neither do they realize that the site for the runways has been moved north so the new residents of the Cornell de- velopment arc not inconvenienced by the noise of jets flying over their homes. Nor will they have to be sub- jected to the devastating financial im- pact of having their homes devalued overnight. No, it will he the villagers of Clare- mont and other settlements nearby who will sec the value of homes slashed, the owners' equity reduced to nothing. Where 1 live with my family on the southwest corner of Claremont, I'll be able to watch 737s taking off and landing by just looking out of my bedroom window! Like everyone else in the village, our health will suffer, our house values will crash, and local flora and fauna will be lost. On top of all this, some 30 square miles of the best farm land between Toronto and the east coast will be lost forever. Will there be any compensation? Probably not. Will the public consultation process leading up to the start of construction be held openly and democratically? No signs of that happening yet! Will we fight to keep our community, environment, home values and health? Absolutely! Don't -even doubt it; there is going to be one ;bell of a stink raised by the taxpayers 'in this area before a square inch of ]and is lost to this airport madness. "The number of incidents are al- ' most becoming too numerous to count anymore," said Ward 2 Re- gional Councillor Doug Dickerson, in reference to Saturday's events and to spills of radioactive heavy water atthe station July 21 and Sept. 12, the discovery of excess j tritium leaking into the xwer sys- tem from late June, and the recent detection of another area of tritium contamination of groundwater on the site. Coun. Dickerson reported he has received calls about the nuclear plant from a number of concerned residents. 'These arc people who have al- ways been traditional supporters of the station, who saw the economic benefit of it;' he said. Now, their "faith is shaken". The councillor maintained it's time the Province and Atomic En- ergy Control Board listened to citi- zens' demands for an environmen- tal assessment, as expressed during last fall's referendum when 87 per cent of voters cast ballots in favour of a prohe. "I don't know how much stronger we can get than having a referendum," he said, adding he wasn't prepared to let governments totally ignore the wishes of citizens. Ward I Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner said while none — of the recent incidents threaten the health and safety of the publ that was only because of "s luck" that might run out. "lite nuclear plant has no than a horseshoe up their ba end," he said, noting the AECB repeatedly chastised Ontario Hy for sloppy radiation protection p cedures. Coun. Mayor Wayne Arthurs told ed Council he has asked Town staff to me come up with "additional strate- the gies" to try to achieve the environ - mental ental assessment which has been fire rejected by the Province so far. ta- In a later interview the mayor WAYNE ARTHURS 'Additional strategies'. noted the Town has been clear in its position that the environmental re- view of the station undertaken by Hydro itself is not enough to ad- dress the concerns of Pickering and its residents. "We're not fully satisfied that the process Hydro has undertaken can meet all of the objectives we envision under the environmental assessment process," he explained. The tour incident was again brought up at Wednesday night's meeting of the Pickering/Ontario Hydro Liaison Committee estab- lished by the Town. Arif Kahn, a health physicist at the station, explained further inves- tigation confirmed that a naturally - occurring radon ga., was the source of the radioactive contamination discovered on about 30 tour partic- ipants, mostly children, as they were monitored while exiting the station. '11w radiation was at very low levels, between 500 and SW counts per minute and the contamination was very easily removed... Hydro determined the radon was attracted to the hands of some of the visitors by a lubricating sub- stance inside the rubber gloves worn with the 'air suits' sometimes used by station staff, which visitors were allowed to try on before the tour. There were no more traces of the contamination after the visitors washed their hands and had their clothes vacuumed. Station chief Bob Stricken told the committee one reason there had been no similar incidents during previous open house tours was be- cause the station's monitors have recently been recalibrated to detect much lower levels of radiation con- tamination. Mr. Stricken said Hy- dro will bring in outside experts to evaluate its own investigation of the incident. Durham teachers at the head of their class a'`I am deeply honoured.' The Durham District School Board honoured two dedicated teachers Monday, presenting the 1997-98 Bruce Mather Award to Marty Quin of Pickering and John Beirness of Port Perry. The award, named after the for- mer director of education, is pre- sented annually to a staff member for "exceptional contribution to the growth of others," said board director Grant Yeo. This is the first year two recipients have been cho- sen for the award. Ms. Quin, who retired last spring from her position as an English -as -a -second -language teacher at Woodlands Centennial rblic School, is a "compassionate and caring individual" who "de- voted" her teaching career to elim- inating racism and helping recent immigrants through ESL pro- grammes, Mr. Yeo said. "I am deeply honoured," Ms. Quin said. She told trustees the award also belongs to the staff and students she worked with at Wood- lands. "It's all about team effort." Mr. Yeo also congratulated Mr. Bei:-ness, a music teacher at Cartwright High School in Port Perry, for his dedication to stu- dents, calling the school's music programme "one of the best". TOURISM Musical ghosts found on Viennese walking tour By Kamum Cullen Spec al to the News Advertiser Music swirls in Vienna like a Iadv's ball gown at the height of a wale. Con- certs, recitals, statues of famous musi- cians, memorials at their graves — throughout the city are endless re- minders of Vienna's status as a music capital. Listening to symphonies or studying statues are wonderful pursuits, but static somehow. Better to have musi- cal Vienna brought to life on a walking tour guided by an informative. animated music teacher with a passion for music and a gift of bringing music composers to life. Walking torus are a fantastic way of benefiung from a local's insight into an arca. •Iitey are usually inexpensive, in- formal an f often offered in a number of languages covering a wick range of sub- jects from a neighbcxrnccxxf tour in IN ecu York to a Jack the Ripper walk in night- time London or the Kafka experience in Prague. A couple of hours walking in ar- eas you might not otherwise tour will enlighten and entertain. Our tour visited the houses where Mozart and Beethoven lived and where Vienna's pride and joy, Franz Schuhert, %a% born. We met at Figaro House, just down a narrow lane from Vienna's heart, Ste - fan's Dom, where Moir• n composed 'The Marriage of Figaro' in 1780. Silently meandering through the first floss spartan apartment, we browsed family pictures, letters, etchings, original scores and heard how illness and pover- ty plagued !Moret. Other than his music, nothing of Mozart's possessions remain. Gazing down Blutgasse (Blo (A Street) from his window as he must have when he composed, tears sprang to my eyes as I listened to an aria from Figaro on the headphones provided. Hopping off the streetcar taken from Figaro House, we strolled past some beautiful Biedermeier homes to Pasqualati House, Beethoven's home from 1804 to 1808 and 1810 to 1815. From his fourth floor window, he could gaze at his beloved Vienna Woods as he composed Symphonies IV, V, and VII among other works. Not as impoverished as Mozart, more personal possessions are displayed — his piano, salt box, paintings, music and grim death mask. Our guide tells us Beethoven was a terrible tenant, appar- ently dumping water over his head for cooling and letting it tun into the apart- ment below or playing music at all hours of the night- No ightNo wonder the landlord could not rent out the space below. 000 Karoline Cullen is a freelance travel writer who looks fwward 10 visiting Vi- enna again for more music and apple strudeL Follow her on the interna at www.fravel-wise.com at www travel• wise.cam. voumEF S E A R SC L U B POINTS Sale IS WEEKEND Pay Use your Sears Card. To help combat the noises—produced by everything from appliances inside to sirens outside—more consumers are looking for ways to "soundproof' their homes. If you are building a new home, or renovating or adding to your existing house, you have a perfect opportunity to add soundproofing. One of the most economical ways to accomplish this is with basic home insulation. It can be relatively simple and inexpensive, and can add greatly to the comfort and the value of your home. Soundproofing inay be especially beneficial when you're ready to sell your home. How To Control Noise Level Materials placed in walls and ceilings can provide a barrier to sound from the outside and from room to room. Some materials, like lead, reflect sound energy but aren't practical for wrapping rooms. Other alternatives exist, but experts say fiber glass insulation is best because it absorbs sound and saves energy. When most people think about insulation, they think about insulating the exterior walls. This is important for controlling sound from the outside. But insulating the interior walls is just as important for reducing noise between rooms inside. Ceilings and Floors are also a vital area to reduce noise from overhead or below. For added sound control, insulate your heating and air conditioning ducts. If you have metal ducts, wrap them in fiber glass insulation with a vapour -retarded facing. If you're adding new ducts, consider a high -efficiency system made from rigid fiberglass insulation boards. Practical Tips In addition to insulation, if you are in the process of renovating or remodeling your home, here are some additional "sound" steps you can take. • Install thick carpeting and padding taaanyxa"`"1 Throughout your home to reduce -:mpact sound. Ca • Caulk around windows and use xcalher-stripping at the bottoms of e _ kwrs. • Choose solid• wood -insulated core loors where privacy is demanded. • l'sc thick glass, insulating glass N .ud storm windows to help e reduce sound transmission j through windows.
