The health department has released the results of a study on breast-feeding in public. And. according to responses from parents surveyed across the region last sum- mer, increasing people's awareness about the benefits of breast-feeding is a key step toward public accep- tance. -We wanted to find out what par- ents believe are the barriers to breast-feeding in public and to learn what we can do to help support par- ents who choose to breast-feed:' says Bev Billings, a public health nurse and co-ordinator of the study. -Most of the people we talked to told us that for parents to breast- feed, they need a supportive envi- ronment.' Ms. Billings reports while many mothers described their experiences with breast-feeding as "enjoyable, natural and rewarding", others shared stories of being asked to leave restaurants and being sent to the washroom to feed their babies to avoid offending others. She says the study found that in many cases mothers aren't comfort- able breast-feeding in public because of the negative reactions they receive from other people. Ms. Billings adds many of those involved in the study said people would likely accept and support breast-feeding if they were more aware of its benefits and saw more moms nurse their babies in public. Survey respondents also suggest- ed additional community support groups for new mothers. Ms. Billings notes the depart- ment has shared the results of the four-month study with the Durham Region Breastfeeding Coalition. She says, "The coalition is making plans to address the issues identi- fied by parents." Those volunteers will be vital as the two-vear- old youth shelter. the only one of its kind in Durham Region. struggles for survival. Facing a funding shortfall of 540.000 this year, the Ark will not be around in 1999 if the entire region does not get behind it and supply goods, services and. in the end, cash. The Ark is 60 per cent funded by Durham Region Social Services. The remaining funding presently comes from the Durham Outlook for the Needy which relies on fund-raising and donations. While the Region Social Services portion of its funding is not in jeopardy, Durham Outlook for the Needy has decided it can no longer afford to keep the shel- ter open. That's where Monday's meeting of new vol- unteers comes in. The 25-hed facility, located at 15 Division St.. in downtown Oshawa has had 662 different young people stay at the residence since it opened on April 29, 1996. In just over two years the Ark has provided a bed for its residents on 6.0(5 different occa- sions. Nearly 40 per cent of shelter residents are from Oshawa, but 10 per cent come from com- munities in Ajax and Pickering, while nearly seven per cent come from Whitby. A few also come from Clarington, Port Perry. Uxbridge and even as far afield as Cobourg. The Ark also serves as a haven for Toronto kids (nine per cent) and from places as far away as VancOUVCT. Newfoundland and the United States. The vast majority of the youths range in age from 15-21 and their reasons for being at the Ark are as numerous as the number of residents who stay there. Some come literally from the streets, others leave their homes while still others leave living arrangements with relatives or friends. No matter what, all those who come to the Ark need a helping hand at a tough time in their young lives. Without the Ark, some of these young people would drift into self-destructive habits and might lose hope for the future. And that is a tragedy that affects all of us. To that end. volunteers are needed and all kinds of large and small items are required to help the Ark save the cost of buying these good:. Everything from sugar. ketchup, relish and spaghetti sauce to basketballs, volleyballs- foot- balls and binders to razors, after shave and make-up to toilet paper and tin foil to televisions and video cassette recorders is necessary to keep the Ark afloat. It's obvious the Ark needs community help — it's just as obvious that the people who will make up the new Board of Directors are determined to keep the facility open. But it will take plenty of hard work and deter- mination to make it happen. If you're interested in providing any goods, services, time or money call the Ark at 905-571- 5161. The assistance will be welcomed, and your efforts will truly help young people in need. Yet, it's a big one in Durham Region, employing about 30,000 people and generating between $300 million and $500 million a year. When you think of Durham Region, you may not think of tourism. But, it's here and the Region now has a strategy in place to bring even more people out here. Tourism is more than just Cullen Gardens or the Bowmanville Zoo or the Pickering Museum Village. It's also fishing, bus tours of wineries, horticulture, farming, boating. In fact, when Tourism Durham's manager Patti Watson took the job three years ago, "everyone said 'why go there? There's no tourism."' About 75 per cent of tourists to Durham are day-trippers, she says. These could be people on a bus tour or folks coming out to an event, such as The Brooklin Spring Fair, The Water- front Festival in Oshawa or Ajax Home Week. Whatever brings them here, they're tourists and they're spending money. Getting more people to come here is Ms. Watson's job and one of her weapons is the Tourism Durham Mar- keting Strategy, which outlines ways of promoting the Region to the tourism industry and individuals. Highlights of the strategy include: co-ordinating advertising into key target markets: • ercating a common, recognizable theme to be used in all upcoming advertising campaigns; • expanding industry input into Tourism Durham marketing plans; * holding educational seminars for the tourism industry; • developing a media relations cam- paign, including familiarization tours for travel writers, speaking engage- ments, media kits and trade shows. People in the tourism industry helped with the strategy. she totes. We set up a group with people in the accommodation industry, the major attractions, restaurants. agri- tounsm and the different municipali- ties. There were 15 on the committee. We look at what they'rc doing in the present and what they should he doing in the future:' Ms. Watson says. "It's not driven by the quote unquote expert, but by the people in the industry. They know their indus- try:' Ms. Watson says. The strategy is "a road map to let people know how we're spending tax- payers' money. They can see the direc- tion that shows the rationale. There are so many markets, travel writers, tourists, buss tour operators," she adds. It lets us know what to do so they can place their dollars.- Debbie ollars"Debbie Tzountzouns, president of the Tourist Association of Durham Region, says one of the things Ms. Watson did when she started was to take an inventory of what's available in the Region, including the number of bed and breakfasts, the wineries, farm- ers %citing produce at their farm -gate. "We market that to the bus tour industry. A bus bnngs in 45 people in one shot. If it's a pleasurable experi- ence, they'll come back again. It's more organized and we market togeth- er:' Ms. Tzountzouris says. "There's so many things you can see and do. There's no end of things they can find. Find out what's in the Region and get people to come out' she adds. The TADR includes representatives from Chambers of Commerce, Busi- taess Improvement Areas and indepen- dent tourism operators, such as restau- rants. "In 1987, we were formed and we've been going forward ever since:' Ms. Tzountzouris says. There are between 50 and 60 members. The tourist association has pro- duced a new map this year, Ms. Tzountzouris adds, something it's members are "very excited about. '"Tourist centres said they'd like something easy to hand out and easy photo by Andrew /wanowski Visitors to Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village in Durham Region can take in a tour of these tiny homes, each of which is a replica of real homes found in Ontario. Tourism in Durham, which includes Cullen Gardens as a popular destination, gen- erates between $300 million and 5500 million each year , according to statistics. Other popular tourist destinations in the reigon include the Bowmanville Zoo, Pickering Museum Village, and municipal waterfronts. to use. If we're proud of what we've got, it will emanate to the people.' she notes. The association hopes the map will "get people to drive the whole region. We're excited. Hopefully we'll update it each year. - The association ties "everything to bring visitors into our area' and this year it seems to be working, Ms. Tzountzouris says. Business is up, she notes. really pleased because of the weather. It's a real boon and benefit for all of us" The further north you go in the Region, the more important tourism becomes because there isn't the indus- worked and what didn't work:' By having a strategy, cw a game plan. Ms Watmin says the tourist industry can hand together in advents- ing campaigns. That's a benefit to the industry because they'll get more bang for their collective buck, she notes. Each year, a visitors' guide is pro- duccd, showing some of the attrac- tions here. About 20 per cent of the 64 -page booklet is a listing of events happen- ing around Durham. In the 1995 Durham Region Eco- nomic Development Advisory Com- mittee strategy, it was determined about 2.5 million people visit Durham Region each year. A typical deftni- 'There's so many things you can see and do. There's no end of things they can find. Find out what's in the Region and get people to come out...' try there, says Ms. Tzountzouris, the owner of Haugen's Chicken Barbecue in Port Perry. "With the Canadian dollar, we've seen a lot of Americans up our way. The Canadian government is market- ing the country now. They weren't marketing it and all people were hear- ing was the GST and taxes. They real- ize a third more spending power off- sets the extra taxes they have to pay:' she says. With the Great Blue Heron Casino on Scugog Island and another not too far away in Orillia, many Americans are renting cottages, she notes. "There's definitely an increase in American tourists." Ms. Watson says she and people in the tourism industry will eventually meet to review the past season. "We'll meet in the fall to see what -- Debbie Tzountzouris tion of a tourist is 50 kilometres trav- elling. It's difficult to decipher if they are from within Durham Region or outside:' Ms. Watson says. "Whether they are in or out, they are spending money and by coming out, they are helping us all out. "That's why the strategy is so important. We work as a team, with a lower advertising dollar, but create a larger impact to the consumers:' she adds. To market the region, she uses the slogan, Tourism Durham — the Coun- tryside Just East of Toronto. Ms. Wat- son says some people think Durham Region surrounds the southwestern Ontario community of Durham. The slogan creates "a feeling of what we have plus it is positive for the Region:' she says. "We have a phe- nomenal product and that's what pushes people to travel" The Durham Farm Fresh Associa- tion also has a map, showing where people can buy fresh produce, Ms Tzountzouri% "They can get the map and go off and it helps to support farmers." There's also a map for fishermen. showing whom the smarms. riven and lakes are and what type of fish can be caught there. sporting fishing is a $100 -million industry here. The Region has some of the most diverse fishing anywhere, tits. Watson says. "It's one of the only places where you can catch stream salmon to bass and pike Whatever type of fish- ing you can catch in Ontario, you can catch in Durham Region. It's a phe- nomenal industry" Ms. Watson calls Cullen Gardens the "Wonderland of Durham Region:' adding it's one of the most, if not the most, popular attractions in the area. Other attractions include the York - Durham Heritage Train that's "a new product that's starting to be recog- nized:' Parkwo od Estates in Oshawa was featured on the A&E show about American castles, one of two in Cana- da included in the show. -We always try to get people to react to with what they like to do. We are a playground:' Ms. Watson adds. "There are exciting new products. We're perfectly situated for day trips" In Durham there are four zoos, three wineries, several museums and the heritage train. One thing the tourist association is doing in concert with Ms. Watson are familiarization tours of Durham for media members and people working in the tourism industry. Ms. Tzountzouns notes the $300 million to $500 million the tourist industry generates was calculated dur- ing "tough times" in 1993, so it's probably an even bigger industry today. Parents can add new set of 3Rs to school lessons The recently formed Parents' Environmental Network (PEN) will soon be reviewing Ontario's new sec- ondary school curriculum. They need the participation of parents with envi- ronmental concerns and interest to incorporate integrated environmental and sustainability education content across subject areas. We need your help in reviewing this curriculum which is now being drafted," says organizer Elise Houghton. "PEN is looking for par- ents to review science, social studies, business and economics/ law which will help in the provincial -level input process during August and the fall of this year." PEN, based out of the Toronto District School Board, conducted a review of the new Ontario elementary science and social studies curriculum produced this spring, and emphasized LAmAm RoULSTON RECYCLER' S REPORT the importance of including basic concepts of environmental and sus- tainability education. Group meri- hers believe their input made a differ- ence. "With help from parents across Ontario, the Ministry of Education will recognize PEN as an 'official stakeholder'," adds Ms. Houghton. "We are working to organize a process whereby pitrents throughout the province can respond collectively and comment about the content of the curriculum with regards to environ- mental content:" Unfortunately, in the Province's development of a new curriculum for all public secondary schools, there is little or no emphasis on concepts such as: * Conservation/careful resource usd; • Human impacts on natural sys- tems; * Environmental stewardship/citi- zenship; * Sustainable design, technology, communities, business practices; * Full -cost accounting (factoring in environmental degradation costs when calculating profits); • Biodiversity; • Environmental W. Reviewers may read one or more of the course outlines without being experts in the subject areas. Volunteer parents will be reading what their children will learn and will be able to make suggestions as to how environ- mental understanding and responsi- bility can be an essential part of their all-round education. If you are willing to contribute a bit of your time to reading and com- menting on a very important aspect of what will be basic content in Ontario's public education system for at least the next 10 years, call Elise Houghton or Marcie Goldman at 416- 960-5495 or 416-226-5421. Evolving drafts of curriculum are being put on the Internet by teachers and advisers on the Education Net- work of Ontario website at www.enorco.on.ca/ccoo/secondary.ht ml. The Progressive Conservative premier, who is stuck in second place in the polls, has said many times his programmes and particu- larly cuts in income tax deserve sup- port. but his government has failed to communicate this. Culture Minister Isabel Bassett. prompted by Mr. Harris's sales talk, took news media to a record store to illustrate how people can spend their savings and blew $1,385. the esti- mated annual windfall for a family of four with $60.000 net income, on compact discs. Mrs. Bassett said she likes to lis- ten to them 'when t'm driving around, like to the cottage.' But many will not receive as big savings and many who do will find them i gobbled up by necessities, as under- lined by a new poll in which more Ontanans said they find it harder to make ends meet. Some cannot afford to go to a cottage, let alone buy discs to smooth the journey. They will resent a millionaire minister's suggestion they can afford such luxuries. It sounds like Marie Antoinette's 'let them cat cake' and they'll wonder whether Mike Harris's government of busi- nessmen is quite on their wave- length. The spending spree backfired also because it attracted demonstra- tors who received equal space in media arguing Mr. Hams's tax cuts are misguided when university fees soar. This was not the positive me%- sage the Tones hoped for. One noticeable way the Torus are trying to market their message is by personalizing it, telling it in terms of how it affects an individual, much like news media tell major stories through the eyes of one affected per. son. But they came unstuck at their first attempt, when they dropped 64 names mostly trying to show how well the province is doing under Mr. Hams, in the throne speech, tradi itionally an imperstmal recital o pro- posed programmes One identified a young offender and broke a federal law, forcing a minister to resign temporanly and worse, for the Tones, obscuring wv- i oral issues in the speech they wanted publicized. Mr. Harris also got into troubled waters when he fished for votes at a salmon hunt in Lake Ontano and was pictured with his son Michael holding a 25 -pound salmon the latter caught, which should have endeared him to anglers. But it prompted reminders the lake is so polluted Mr. Hams's gov- emmcnt has warned fish from it should be eaten in only small quan- j titles at a time and premier and son will have to take five -and -a -half months to digest it. Mr. Hams and his ministers and even family have been seen doing strange things to further their mes- sages. The premier has been in fur- niture stores and his wife Janet, who normally keeps a low profile, turned up at a tribute to a motorcycle man- ufacturer, saying her ambition is to own a Harley-Davidson. Education Minister Dave John- ston, Mr. Harris's most sober and reserved minister, was pictured with his hair standing on end at an elec- tronic gadget at the Ontario Science Centre as he unveiled a new science curriculum. Mr. Johnson was also heard say- ing uncharacteristically, as his min- istry was given more of a hand in the province's TV network, 'I love Polkaroo (one of its best known kid- die characters.) Polkaroo and I are best buddies.' Mysterious Margaret Marland, whose critics have wondered what she does as minister for children, suddenly emerged and donated blood at a clinic. But any prize for spinning a story would go to Finance Minister Ernie Eves, who once did it literally by holding a news conference in the revolving restaurant in the CN Tow- er to illustrate he has got the econo- my moving. Mr. Eves was pictured dropping off his washing at a laundry just like an ordinary customer and walking into the open antis of its owners who praised him for keeping down taxes. j Mr. Eves normally sends his dirty clothes by his chauffeur, but a media aide thought it would attract more interest if he delivered them person- ally and arranged for the owners to be on hand with kind words. Ontan- ans can expect many more such gim- micks. TACE s • THE NEWS AvEIRTISEJtt WEDNe:WAV. Mr. Kuslikis said regional offi- cials began receiving complaints about the water odour over the weekend. starting in Clarington and moving west to other munici- palities which receive water from Lake Ontario. Toronto is also reporting odours in its tap water. The Region of Durham experi- enced a similar problem in 1993 and 1993. which went away shortly after it appeared when lake temper- atures dropped. It's impossible to determine when this latest case will disappear since it's a result of the lake tem- perature. said Mr. Kuslikis. "I'm hoping with some cooler temperatures. the (lake) tempera- ture will drop and the problem will go away." he says. The lakes temperature is cur- rently between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. In the meantime. he suggests keeping drinking water cold, with ice or in the refrigerator, which may help to reduce the water's odour. "It's tough. tart you can win. Nurses and clerical nurses for the not-for- profit community health care agency have been on strike since June 19 after tail - mg to reach a col- lective agreement with manage- ment. The nurses provide a variety of in-home health care wr%wcs and assessment for clients across Durham Region. He criticized the Harris gov- ernment for allowing for- profit companies in the health care system, drawing similarities to the American sys- tem. -I don't see anything about the American health care sys- tem we should Uy to copy or emulate;' he said. "Moving to pn- vate, for-profit health care is the wrong system" Mr. Hampton said he's visited other striking nurses across the province who are concerned with the same issues cited by local St. Elizabeth staff.
