Durham Catholic District School Board trustees tied up some loose ends at a special board meeting Thursday, in- cluding setting a date to pass the budget for the 1998-99 school year. The board has scheduled an Aug. 17 meet- ing to approve the budget for the short year which ends Aug. 31 and to unveil the first draft of the spending blueprint for the next school year. "We tend to be cautious on approvals;' said board di- rector Grant Andrews in an interview following the meeting. He noted the "late- ness of the information" from the Ministry of Educa- tion and Training has de- layed the board's budget process. But, despite the delay, Mr. Andrews says, "things are looking pretty good" for the board. "In :he long run we'll benefit from the changes in the funding approach. There are a number of positive gains." The board will release the second draft of its budget at an Aug. 31 meeting, with fi- nal approval to take place Sept. 8. About 85 pro -lifers — 50 from a touring group called Show the Truth and another 35 picked up from area churches — held larger -than -life four-bv-five-foot billboards with pic- tures of aborted fetuses at major in- tersections across the region. Starting early in the morning in Bowmanville, the group headed west to Oshawa then Whitby, Ajax and Pickering to bring its message that abortion kills unborn babies. But. not everyone who saw the message agreed with the method of delivery. As the group slowed traffic out- side the Toys R Us and surrounding malls in the Hwy. 2-Thickson Road area of Whitby, one unidentified woman got out of her car to confront the demonstrators. "This happened to me 23 years ago. I'll be grieving for the rest of my life. I don't like that;" the woman shouted, pointing at the signs. The woman, enraged and in tears, climbed back in her car, slammed the door and sped off, declining the group's offer to give her counselling. Although not everyone's reaction was so severe, many other shoppers on their way to nearby stores agreed the demonstration was in bad taste. "Everybody's entitled to their opinion;' said Debbie Nicolak, who was shopping at A&P with her five- year-old son, John. "But, I think it's too much for little children. I really don't think kids should be seeing those types of things. It can trauma- tize them." Another family coming out of the Toys R Us agreed. "I'm not im- pressed:' said Michelle Everest. The Show the Truth Tour is modelled after the Freedom Tour, which began in Wisconsin in 1996 and which organizers say helped reduce the number of abortions in that state by one-third. Among those who took part in the event at the corner of Harwood Avenue and Bayy Street in Ajax were, from left, Joy Obada of Wisconsin and Kate Milan of Pembroke. Her husband Ed added, "We're all for the message but the way they did it was a little inappropriate" The tour's co-ordinator, Rose- mary Connell, is unapologetic. -Peo- ple say, 'Oh, the pictures, they're horrible: they're horrible. You shouldn't do this'. But, there's no such thing as a pretty picture of a murdered baby. Each year in Canada 106,000 unborn babies are killed. There's no protection for the unborn child whatsoever. "We studied society to find a way to get our message across. People don't read anymore... they're used to billboards. TV. We went for the visu- al. This approach is unique in Cana- da, admits Ms. Connell who says this is the second summer for the tour which is targeting 16 major centres across Ontario. One other group from Wisconsin is running a similar programme called the Freedom Tour. So far, the demonstration has not encountered any violence, says Ms. Connell. Nor have there been any traffic accidents as a result. But, there has been plenty of foul lan- guage, she admits. "People become emotional. It's an emotional issue. That's the message politi- cians passed on to the Ajax - Pickering Board of Trade after general manager Lesley Whyte made a presentation to council Monday on a survey it conducted which indicates some businesses believe such a move could save money. "Bigger isn't better," ar- gued Mayor Steve Parish, say- ing amalgamation has left Toronto "in complete chaos:' He maintains "savings are il- lusory" and credits Ajax and Pickering with already shar- ing services where possible in a bid to save money. "There's no better reason (to oppose amalgamation) than this: the people of Ajax don't want it;" he said. Mayor Parish vowed to ask local candidates in the next provincial election where they stand on amalgamation and "knock on people's doors against them" if they are for the idea. Ward 2 local Councillor Joe Dickson agreed. "Talk to the people on the streets ... and nine out of 10 people say Ajax is something special and...don't want to be part of `Pickax'" Last summer, the Board of Trade identified amalgama- tion as one of the topics it wanted to explore, along with actual value assessment, the expansion of Hwys. 401 and 407 and other issues. In a survey, it asked its members to comment on amalgamation from a business perspective, recognizing the emotions residents have may differ strongly. Of 100 re- sponses, 74 per cent indicated they were in favour of merger and 65 per cent said further study on the issue is needed. But those results aren't a comment on the job being done at the municipal level, noted Ms. Whyte. Rather, some respondents to the survey believe munici- pal amalgamation is in- evitable and feel it would be better to lead the way than to be told what to do by the provincial government. Other respondents believe savings would be realized by consolidating such costs as administration, which would reduce taxes and give resi- dents more money to spend at and invest in local businesses. Further, amalgamation would mean less money spent by the two Towns competing for the same investments, such as a major hotel. Board of trade members recognized the loss of jobs and "global identity" would have to be addressed if amal- gamation occurred. Despite unanimous opposi- tion to the idea, councillors agreed to send a representa- tive to any talks on amalgama- tion. The image of an aborted fetus's head held up by a pair of clamps was ominous, horrifying — and complete- ly unacceptable in a public place. Just as there are community standards in place to pre- vent the spread of hate literature or pornography so should those same standards be brought to bear in showing im- ages which are frightening, especially to young children. Please understand: we are not against any type of law- abiding protest. But we do stand against people who at- tempt a protest by shock methods alone and without any other effort to educate those they are trying to influence. The 'Show the Truth' group made quick hits in Durham Region on Thursday. They lined up their five -foot -by -four - foot posters one after another on Harwood Avenue in Ajax, Thickson Road in Whitby, Simcoe Street in Oshawa and Hwy. 2 in Bowmanville. Their method was to have the same stark poster with the words 'Choice is' at the top and 'Abortion' at the bottom framing the picture of the fetus. I had just wrapped my mind around the so-called fair value assessment system and what it meant to my bank account when education costs were removed from the property tax bill. And I grew accustomed to — even em- braced — the reforms ordered in Bill 100 which were designed to make great On- tario students even greater. Then along came 'downloading'. which may or may not be confused with 'downsizing', depending where you work. I've been a friend of the Tories in past elections, and believed they were on the right track to make Ontario prosperous again when I cast my vote in their favour in 1995. 1 still believe that, but that little voice in my head is gaining an annoying measure of confidence as it internally mocks me. As for downloading, I'm getting used to the way it rolls off my tongue. I'm using it more frequently in social situa- tions to help nudge friends and family to- ward the inevitable, as in: "I've down- loaded some of my grocery expenses to the recreation budget. It's revenue neutral, though, so I'll still get the same amount of food, but some of the costs will be picked up by the recreation people. When you think of it, nachos should be paid for out of the recreation side anyway, since we usually eat them when we're watching a movie.. " I've also dropped 'downloading' or, as I've come to call it, 'The D -Word', in fam- ily settings. "Yes dear, I'm on top of that list of things to do. And if I'm not, I'll download the responsibility to one of the children. But don't worry, downloading is chore neutral, so no one will notice any extra work. Does it matter who does the lawn as long as it gets done? And look on the bright side, we may notice through this downloading exercise there are efficien- cies to be found, and we can streamline the task -completion process." Stop sounding so surprised! It's not as if the D -Word is entirely new. As far as I'm concerned, it all started with catchy phrasessuch as 'down time', which led to hybrids like the 'down side' of an issue, or the 'upshot' of the deal. Newer phrases are being invented every day. And remember, many cyber surfers regularly 'download' naughty images from the Internet onto their home PCs. If this is truly the Information Age, then downloading in all its guises is only adding to the burden. Scratched so deep, they seem to have rooted themselves and taken hold of her. All of her, leaving none of her untouched, unhurt by those words, those words ... She knew them, and they knew her, knew they had her. And she had no strength to fight them. She woke up. The blood was pounding in her temples, throbbing and pushing, pounding on her brain. She laid there in a haze for a moment or two, lost in a deep fuzz. The last few hours was all she could think of. On the floor. Crying. Rocking. Think- ing. Corrosive words. These corrosive words that had eaten her and then healed her and left her hurting deep inside, but with thoughts so deep, it was like swim- ming in a cup of pudding. Suddenly, she sat straight up. Rachel. Remembering Rachel running out the door, had she come home? Throwing back her quilt, hurtful words gave way to worry for her daughter's safety. Rushing to her daughter's bed- room, she felt her heart beat faster with each step. The pounding ham- mered her chest and she could barely seem to draw a breath into her q xver- ing lungs. She paused, her hand resting on the gold door knob, watching it glibber as the silver moonlight flirted with it, a sharp contrast Taking a deep breath and forcing it into her tight lungs, she wrapped her hand around the smooth knob and shivered a little at the surprisingly cold shiver it held. Turning the knob ever so gently, she entered. At first, darkness, nothingness, and then, like a whisper, a blade of sil- ver moonlight sliced through the dark- ness. It framed her daughter's angelic face and seemed to sluice down the crevices Rachel's head had dented into the pillow. Sighing as relief flood- ed over her and washed the haze awayshe stepped closer to her baby. The board rests between us. float- ing on air as it would float on water, it has been wonderfully crafted by the most skilled artists. The glazed marble pieces have meticulous detail in their fine de- sign and they seem to glow as if sur- rounded by a halo. Each piece is capa- ble of standing alone as the centre at- traction of any of the world's finest mu- seums. But, the game itself, and not the board, is of utmost importance. For this is the day I play the Grand Master of them all in a game of chess. The game begins. Polished open- ings are played out, he deploys his great white armies in attack formation, maneu- vering his pawns with great skill. His at- tack comes swdty and violently. My knight falls, along with a pawn, but my lortificabot hold. He ssai chhes along the front looking for my weakness, but everything is protected. He kamikazes. and trades his bishop for the untimely death of my karst knight. I wait patiently behind my caste weals as my defences are prodded and poked at, #hen ham- mered and parried. Still, nothing gives way. The fires of heaven rain down on my forces for a bug time. To my surprise, atter the bombardment I still stand. And, as the smoke clears, I see my chance. One unguarded piece stands alone; I take the Master's queers. He grunts and his keit eye twriWm in distaste. I have him on the run. I quickly rout several more of his pieces, he is dri- ven back into full retreat I invade his holy sainc0ty, and head for the throne. None of his white krights or holy men can stop me. Soon, with a miraculous stroke of luck, I put him in check mate. I won! I have beaten the Master at his own game. But, as he stares at me with sad ancient eyes, I get a little ner- vous. A strange and eerie thought comes to me. What do I do, after I have beaten God in a game of chess? Sales up even as GM plants idled by strike OSHAWA — General Motors of Canada had some good news this week with the announcement of a banner sales month in June. Last month dealers recorded their highest combined vehicle sales figure since June 1991 with the delivery of 5),252 new cars and light trucks. "June was an outstanding month for our dealers and retailers, particularly in the truck market, where sales were the third best ever;' said Dick Conlin, Gen- eral Motors of Canada's vice president of marketing. The sales represented a 19.8 per cent increase in car sales and a 33.2 per cent increase in truck sales over June 1997. A strong showing by the Chevy Mal- ibu (up almost 350 per cent) and the Oldsmobile Intrigue (up almost 240 per cent) helped pull this year's overall car sakes up from levels which had been lower than 1997 for most of the year to date. Even with the strong showing in June, this year's car sales are still down 0.5 per cent compared with the January to June 1997 period. Truck sales are up over 13 per cent this year for the calendar year to date. Pickering relay girls set two Ontario records PICKERING — Pickering ath- letes were record setters at the Ontario Track and Field Association's Provin- cial Relay Championships at Centen- nial Stadium in Kitchener last week- end. The bantam (13 -year-old) girls' relay team of Jenn Evans, Tabia Charles and Shannon Boodram, all of Pickering, and Patricia Mayers, of Os- hawa, set provincial records in both ,the 4 -x -100 -metre and 4 -x -200 -metre relays. In the 4 -x -100 -metre relay, the team set a new Ontario mark of 51.8 seconds. Durham Region officially opened its water -efficient garden on Tuesday and the aim of the facility is to show gardeners the variety of plants that can be grown with little watering. The garden is at the Regional headquarters, at the corner of Ross - land Road and Garden Street in Whitby. At the opening, Durham Regional Chairman Roger Anderson said plants in the garden are "drought tol- erant. They don't require watering, other than rainfall:' There are 200 different plant vari- eties in the garden, ranging from perennials and annuals to trees, vines, shrubs and ornamental grass- es. Among the perennials are iris, rose campion, geranium, thrift and yarrow, while some of the annuals are marigold, alyssum, sage, pop- pies, sunflowers and Dahlberg daisy. You save time hauling around the hose. The time spent watering is less." Also, the plants don't need chem- icals and the ground is covered with mulch, which saves time weeding, Ms. Mason Hogue said in an inter- view. There are "significant long-term benefits" for taxpayers with water ef- ficient gardening as less drinking water is used on the plants, thus de- laying expansion of water supply plants, Mr. Anderson said. The watering of lawns and gar- dens helps increase water use by 50 per cent in the summer. One feature of the garden is a rain barrel with a hose connection and shut-off valve. One-quarter of an inch of rain on a 1,000 -square -foot roof yields 150 gallons of water. There arc 14 garden centres in the Region where plants in the garden are available.
