Food for thought...
Ajax, Pickering families aided by
annual Thanksgiving food drive
BY MARIANNE TAKACS
STAFF REPORTER
PICKERING -- Thanksgiving is
almost here again and in addition to
ordering your own turkey, you might
want to remember the needy in Ajax
and Pickering who can't afford to
put a traditional fall feast on the
table.
St. Paul's on -the -Hill Community
Food Bank is once again running a
Thanksgiving food drive which
makes it easy and convenient for res-
idents to help make sure their neigh-
bors don't go hungry.
Donations of non-perishable food
items may be dropped off at the
supermarkets and other locations
listed below.
The St. Paul's food bank handed
out 1.286 food hampers in Ajax and
Pickering as of August.
According to Sandy Renaud, one
of the volunteers who help run St.
Paul's, those hampers provided
about a three -days' supply of food
and some extra staples like flour and
sugar for about 3.702 individuals
(including repeats, though clients
may only come to St. Paul's for help
with groceries once a month).
Most food bank clients are indi-
viduals with families and the major-
ity of those St. Paul's helps feed are
children.
"We seem to be getting more fam-
ilies:' says Ms. Renaud, noting most
clients arc from single or even dou-
ble -income households without
enough money for food left over
after the rent or mortgage and other
bills have been paid. St. Paul's is
also finding itself helping out places
like shelters for battered women.
which arc also facing hard times.
"They have their own supply of
people who donate to them but
sometimes they run short:' explains
Ms. Renaud, adding shelters have a
particular need for baby food and
bulk items such as laundry deter-
gent.
While the food bank welcomes all
donations, Ms. Renaud notes most
people tend to give the same items
— staples such as macaroni and
cheese dinners and peanut butter.
But also needed arc items such as
sugar, flour, canned or dried milk.
cold cereal, canned fruit, and lunch
snacks like pudding cups or cereal
bars for kids.
The food drive begins this Satur-
day. Oct. 4 and runs through Satur-
day. Oct. 18.
Food may be dropped off in Pick-
ering at LOEB Glendale. 1900 Dixie

and Finch Avenue just cast of Dixie

In Ajax donations may be
dropped off at IGA on Westney Road
just west of Harwood Avenue.
Food or cash donations may also
be made at St. Paul's on -the -Hill
Anglican Church weekday mornings
from 9 a.m. to noon or any time on
weekends. (Ring the bell at the main
entrance.) Cheques made out to St.
Paul's Food Bank can also be mailed
to St. Paul's on -the -Hill Anglican
Church, 882 Kingston Rd.. Picker-
ing, L IV I A8.
Volunteers willing to help out
with tasks such as picking up dona-
tions at stores and packing boxes and
shelves would also be welcomed.
Anyone interested in volunteering
should call Barb Macrae at 839-8923
or Rae Coulter at 427-1569.

Mr. McTeague has been particu-
larly critical of the pricing practices
of major oil companies which also
operate gas stations.
He says the big companies arc
forcing independent retailers out of
business by driving up wholesale
prices and "cross subsidizing" their
own retail operations.
The MP also wants the committee
to tackle issues such as "temperature
compensation" (a practice which is
supposed to deal with the problem
of gas expanding with beat and con-
tracting with cold).
He maintains it's being done in
Canada based on inaccurate average
temperatures.
Such questionable pricing prac-
tices would never be accepted in the
U.S., according
McTeague. He Mr. SALE 11111111MPE

He says the committee has the

Liberal government, as well as their
caucus colleagues.
He also notes that with only an
eight -vote majority in the House of
Commons, the government will be
interested in what a committee of 16
of its own MPs has to say on the
issue of gas pricing.
Mr. McTeague still plans to rein-
troduce a private member's bill
which would require oil companies
to justify price increases.
The hill had passed second read-

died when the election was called
last spring.

Voters should
hold the cards
9
on casino
Yes or no? it should he as simple as that.
Proposals being considered in Pickering and Ajar
would let residents here have their say on whether they
want casinos in their communities.
It's a straightforward proposition, but one we should
all consider carefully if indeed we're asked to vote in
Ajax and Pickering on our preference.
Ajax councillors already decided against including a
referendum on casinos as an addition to the Nov. 10
municipal election ballot. But news from the provincial
government which indicates casinos will only be located
in communities which are willing hosts has prompted
incumbent %lav or Steve Parish to urge councillors to
reconsider.
In Pickering. councillors are expected to vote Oct. 6 to
decide whether a casino referendum will he included on
the election halloo there.
In the meantime. we must all consider where we stand
on casinos in our communities.
The debate in Ajax currently centres on whether voters
know enough about casinos and gambling to male
informed decisions.
A more widely held view among councillor in each
community is that the public should be given an opportu-
nity to participate, through a referendum, in the decision-
making process.
If it's true that more information is needed on casinos
(how thev will be introduced. where they will be built,
the revenue they will generate), then the responsibility
lies with our elected officials to See that it is provided in a
timeh and acce-.sihle fashion so citizens can make
infcrrrtecl deomo n%.
But the aim Iact of participation, through a refer-n-
dum, is vital to the democratic process. For Sortie, a deci-
sion on gambling irktheir♦ coram*tiq will rewire m
intellectual exercise at all: itm
s imply wrong for the.
Others may choose to decade based on the perceived
benefits and drawbacks of legalized gambling in their
neighborbcods.
Wherever you %iL you have a conctitutiorul right in
this country to decide.
Whether, you'll vote with your head or with your
heart, at least you'll have the power to decide.

1 want to share my concerns about 'The Road
Alread.' As a 30lyear veteran of the Durham
Btwd of Education. 1 laud %tine of the concepts
pre enicd but challenge the ability of this gm-
ernment tt, implement the,% tett} ideal, without
dismantling much of what is good in Durham
schools.
As an elementary educator. 1 applaud the
desire to limit class sizes. In Durham. our con-
tract allows up to 27 students in classes from 1K
to Grade 2. 30 in Grade 3. 34 in Grades 4. 5 and
6 and 37 in Grades 7 and K. These numbers arc
high and often quite unmanageable. The thought
of 27 three and four year olds. in a single class,
with tme teacher. is ludicrous as is the practice of
having 37 teems with the teacher.
To reduce class size% would require far more
classrooms. Whcre will these come from? In
Durham we are already ovcrc7owded. We have
some 500 portables. Schools have up to 14
portables How can the goal of smaller class

Preparation time is a c ntentiow% issue certain
to raise the ire of Durham elementary teachers if
it's cut. Our teachers currently have four hours
and 40 minutes teaching time per day. Will this
decrease to fall in line with provincial and feder-
al average.%''
It is essential that we build effective teams.
We congratulate the minister of education for
helping to strengthen the teams in our schools.
Never before have all education workers been Soy
closely aligned as they are now. This is due, in
large metsure, to the ongoing announcements
(musings) of the minister and the never-ending
seize% of trial balloons which have enraged and
discouraged educators.
The "effective tram.' referred to in 'The
Road Ahead' must Twit he built by dismantling
the current in-whtol teams. Tiuc report States,

other issues, the hest way to handle this is by the
employment of school assistants and technical
asa%fants.' This would be welcomed by most
Durham is:ichors. That is. until they realux that
within the Spending cap certain to be imposed, it
would vitt the addition of these assistants only
after such essential teachers as teacher -librarians
and academic resource teacher% were eliminated.
Each of these: is crucial in helping sebcols fulfill
their mandate, to implement new curricula and to
meet the meals of more and harder-tor%crve Stu-
dems.
As our local MPP, it's incumbent upon you to
preserve the quality of oxlnatxn in Durham.
You must Support the nced for more, not less,
resources (both human and financial) for
Durham students. Engage in open dial>gusc with
those who make education happen in Durham
before endorsing marry of the proposals tabled to
give the minister of education powers to invoke
sweeping changes in education.

the precarious existence of junior kindergarten.
Perhaps it is plans such as these that could
weaken the quality of our education system.
Unfortunately your editorial forgot to mention
these concerns expressed by teachers and
informed parents. Instead of the government
using its resources for endless studies and
"reinventing the wheel" (in terms of curricu-

support of students. Then test results would

Teachers WANT to assist their students.

Column
This column was written by sexual
assault (Group members Robin, Nycke,
Bettv. Charlene, Pauline, Tena, Judith,
Geraldine, Teresa and Lisa.
We can't tolerate
violence against
women, children
Very few people know that a group of
women gather together twice a month to
work on overcoming the lingering effects of
sexual assault. We are women between the
ages of 20 and 60 who are still recovering
from the trauma of abuse that for many of
us occurred during childhood and was com-
mitted by young offenders. We work on
identifying the effects the abuse has on us
and on finding ways to cope and lead a
happy and healthy life despite our histories.
We felt compelled to speak out in light of
several recent cases of women and children
being victimized in Durham Region.
In regards to the young Oshawa girl who
was sexually assaulted in a playground by
other children recently, our thoughts and
prayers go out to her and her family. We
want to offer our experience to help her
mother understand what the little girl may
face in the future. Certainly the child may
not identify her assault as being sexual in
nature, but her body will definitely remem-
ber it. As she grows up and becomes aware
of her Sexuality, body memories and buried
thoughts will surface and may lead the girl
to question hcr%clf and her sexuality. She
will need to have continuous reassuranccs
that any latent feelings she has may be
related to the assault and she is not abnor-
mal for having unexpected reactions or
thoughts. Many people believe it is best to ;
forgive and forget: but the child's mind and
body will never forget and burying the inci-.
dent only leads to secondary problems
many survivor% experience.
Lung -term effects of childhood sexual
hssanit include unpredictablic pasta: or anxi- s
ety 'attacks, aleept" diwrderx anal nhnorroa
mewl, lnals11ecWsl4rarmotiusal develop-
ment. Many women have problem, with
relationships, with trusting themselves and i
others, or turn to destructive behaviors to
try to ease the pain inside. Many of us feel ,
we have been victimized twice, once by the
perpetrator(s) and once by families and a
society that wants only to forget the shame
of what has happened. if families and soci-
ety do not share the shame, the survivor
must shtmldcr it all herself and it is this
burden that cripples many survivom for life. '
We agree with the mother that the par-
ents of the perpetrator% should he held
respimsible. It is difficult to understand how:
these young children would ever even think
to do something like this. This is a cruel
and viscous assault of a sexual nature and
normal young children should not have the
experience a) conceptualize something like ,
this. We feel the families of the young
offenders need to be thoroughly investigated;
and compelled to take counselling for years,:
not just a few weeks. We all know the sta-
tistics about sexual assault and violence
against women and children and we cannot
allow the cycle of violence to continue.
Two other recent cases also exemplify
the peril that women and children face in
our society. The 14 -year-old girl who was
raped and left for dead by the railway tracks
is another survivor who is in need of inten-
sive counselling, support and understanding.
We feel the perpetrator should have been
charged with attempted murder as well as :
sexual assault, one charge should not cancel
out the other. Severe forms of punishment
are required in cases like this one if we
hope to protect other women and children
from this man. Often the voices of women
and children are not heard or ignored, as it►
the case where the father killed himself and:
his three-year-old child. Our male -driven
systems are biased towards the men who
enter those systems and the appallingly higd
rate of violence against women and childri
is one result. It is time to start erring on the
side of caution, time to start listening to thio,
voices of women and children, of those whi
are most at risk of violence and sexual ti
assault. We can no longer tolerate this level;
of violence toward women and children in
OUT society.

Healy's homecoming
Veteran goalie hopes
to help Leafs to playoffs
By At_ Riven
SPORTS REPORTER
AJAX — Making the playoffs is the number -
one priority for the Toronto Maple Leafs and
goaltender Glenn Healy as the NHL's regular
season begins tonight.
"The only thing (Leafs' man-
agement) wants is for us to he
in the playoffs:' say,
Pickering
n a t i v e
Healy, who
lives in Ajax.
The only num-
ber they're hooking at is a top -
eight finish. That's the only
focus. It's not so much where
you play and how much, but
only that we're still playing
after the 15th of April"
After spending four years
with the New York Rangers,
who won the Stanley Cup in
1994. and experiencing more
winning than losing as part of a
veteran club. Healy is one of
only a handful of seasoned
players on a Leafs' team which
has floundered since caching
the Stanley Cup semi-finals in
1993.
The prospect of being a leader on a rookie -
laden club doesn't worry the 34 -year-old puck -
stopper. He %ccs it as a challenge.
" 1 think it was part of the reason they signed
me:' says Healy. "They, want me to parlay some
of that experience to the younger player%.
Certainly the younger guys are watching you to
see how you respond. We arc a very young team
with some of the guys born in the late '70s, so
there's not a la of expenence"
He left the Rangers' organization as a free
agent to sign a three-year contract with the
Leafs. Toronto is the fourth stop in Healy'% 13 -
year NHL career, which has seen him mind net
for the Lo% Angcle% King%, the New York
Islanders and the Rangers.
Healy says this year's training camp and exhi-
bition season were more competitive than what
he was accustomed to with the Rangers.
"It's a new team, a new role, a new experience
and different responsibilities here so. yes. there
was a bit more pressure. With a young team
that's being rebuilt, (training camp) was a little
bit tougher than the ones in New York. There's a
lot more spats open and a lot more fobs on the
line.*'
The % hake- up in the Leafs' upper management
also carnal over on to the ice a% there were few
players assured of roster %pas when the club,
coming off a dismal 23rd -overall finish in the
199697 season, opened cramp We last month.
"It's a much different club this season from
the top throughout the whole organization. They
brought in some quality people in the off-season
and the cuts that they've made show that just
because you were with the team last year is no
guarantee of being on the team this year. There
are 1 1 new faces on the team this year."
Healy had a solid camp and pre -season with
the Leafs. He started three pre -season games,
winning two — 3-2 over the Buffalo Sabres and
2-1 over the Florida Panthers — and suffering a
3-2 loss to his old team, the New York Rangers.
He posted a goals -against average of 2.01 in the
three contests.
Healy says the Maple Leafs will have to rely
on hard work, night in and night out, to make up
for some offensive deficiencies, although he
(cels Mats Sundin, Derek King and Sergei
Bercnn make up "one of the better lines in hock -
e}.
'1A,, don't have the offence to blow anyone
out. On defence, it's going to be
nteresting to see how our team
reacts in one -goal games. We're
going to have to battle every
night to win:'
Healy says he's unsure how
much playing time he'll get in
Toronto, as Felix Potvin has
established himself as the
club's number -one goaltender.
However, he plans to use his
experience to help Potvin and
the other members of the young
Leafs.
"It has certainly been a great
relationship just three weeks
into it:' says Healy. "We have a
lot of time to get together to
have a situation where we can
both push each other and com-
plement each other. Beyond
that. I have to work with him
and other younger players"
Healy is happy to be with the Maple Lcafs, in
part, because he'll to play closer to his family
and friends.
"rhe Rangers' organization treated me
tremendously and with a great deal of respect.
but there comes a time when a change is needed.
and I felt for a great many reasons that it was
time. I'm happy Toronto was one of the teams
intcrc%ted during the summer"
GLEtiti HEALY
Signed to 'parlay' NHL
experience to younger
Leaf players.

Looking and feeling great at The Muscle &Fitness Shop
If you're into feel-
ing and looking great,
then you should visit The
Muscle QTc Fitness Shop.
Located at 1032
Brock St. S. in Whitby,
there you'll find the latest
work out fashions, body-
building gear and the
best in fitness supple-
ments.
Owner Mike
Desson opened his shop
6 months ago after leav-
ing a full time job.
"I've been involved
with fitness and body-
building for the past 10
years," he explains. "This
is something i've wanted
to do for a long time. I
felt there was a real need
for this type of business
in the Durham area."
Mike applied his
philosophy about body-
building to starting his
own business --to set a
goal, work hard and be
patient.
His customers
range in age from 14 to
74 and he points out you
don;t have to be a body-
builder to take advan-
tage of the many items
for sale in his store.
"Most customers
are concerned about fit-
ness, many are in sports,
or want to control their
weight;" he says.
He stocks a wide
variety of supplements,
protein powders, vita-
mins and more from such
names as Prolab, EAS,
SportPharma and Twin
Lab.
He also offers
nutritional programs so
you can start a regimen
that suits your particular
needs.
Mike Desson, owner of The Muscle 8 Fitness
Shop.
Cf course you can
look good, inside and
outside of the gym, in the
latest workout wear.
There's many selections
to choose from for both
men and women.
At The Muscle &
Fitness Shop vou'II also

and stocking Staffers for
this Christmas. The shop
is also the exclusive dis-
tributors for UHA a revo-
lutionary all natural hair
retardant cream for
bodybuilders looking for
that sleek and smooth
look.
