Teens sing of nuclear plant fears `Blow up. Melt down. People dead, scattered `round,' Pickering children worry in song BY MARIANNE TAKACS STAFF REPORTER PICKERING — Not many kids have the gumption to get up in front of a bunch of politicians and TV cameras to perform a protest song against nuclear ewer. But that's just what Meagan Miron, Alexandra Kish and Teri Smith of Pick- ering did at Monday's meeting of Town Council. Friends Meagan, 13, Alexandra, 14, and Teri, 15, are so concerned about all the had things they'd heard lately about the Pickering nuclear station and Ontario Hydro's nuclear division they decided they had to do something. It was Teri's idea to bring the song they wrote before Council. .'Nuclear reactor, burning down:' they chanted as they played on a snare drum and maracas. "Fire everywhere, glow on the ground. Blow up. Melt down. People dead, scattered 'round: ' Their performance drew stunned silence at first and then a round of applause from councillors and members of the public in the Council chamber. "We were here because we feel strongly about the issue we presented:' said Meagan, a student at Elizabeth B. Phin Public School, in an interview after the performance. Alexandra and Teri attend Dunbarton High School. Meagan explained she is concerned about the safety and well-being of the public and the effect of spills from the station on drinking water and wildlife. She said she also worries about "the fact there have been so many secret things going on we've never heard of until after the fact:' Alexandra said she was particularly disturbed by the recent news of a landfill NOBODY BEATS SOS I IT* ■ PIZZA ■ SUBS ■ WINGS* HOME OF THE ORIGINAL BIGFOOr EL AJAX - ,G83-3333 3Z PICKERING 839-4411 40 Free Delivery from 11:00 a.m. D Citizens' revolt calls for plant closure O 'Raging grannies' protest station 0 Leak shuts reactor STORIES ON PAGE 4 at the Pickering station having been con- taminated with oil. Citizens speak out on plant Tuesday Residents' revolt calls for closure of troubled station By MARIANNE TAKACS STAFF RE 4MMIt PICKERING — A 'citizens' revolt' against the Pickering nuclear station appears to be picking up steam rather quickly and a public meeting to organize it is to be held Tuesday. Pickering resident Sally McLeod says her phone has been "literally ringing off the hook" since a story appeared in Tuesday's News Advertiser reporting her efforts to start a citi- zens' group to fight for the closure of the nuclear plant. "It has not stopped ring- $A ing and everybody wants to Mc talk. It's 15 -minute calls Phon with everybody." off tht Mrs. McLeod is trying to get the group under way, she says, because the community has reached the end of its rope with all the bad news coming out of the station about tritium leaks, spills, unscheduled shutdowns, licensing problems, poor safety practices and management and operational prob- lems. Ontario Hydro recently announced four of its eight nuclear reactors at Pickering need to be taken out of service indefinitely to allow the provincial utility to con- centrate on running the other half of the station properly. Mrs. Mcleod says she received 31 calls in response to the newspa- per story, many from people inter- ested in working with her, within less than 24 hours after it appeared. "lite response has been overwhelming. Everybody has been feel - i ng this way. They just needed a lightning rod to get this up and running." The Sept. 23 pub- lic meeting begins at 7:30 D.M. in the Council cham- LLY ber at the Pickering Civic LEOD Complex at One the e `ringing Esplanade Gust south of hook' Hwy. 2 and Glenanna Road). Everyone is wel- come to attend the open- forum-stylc meeting with what she describes as a "loose agenda". She hopes those attending will be inter- ested in discussing a plan of action to work toward getting the nuclear station closed to shutdown Leakleads at nuclear station PICKERING — The Unit I reac- tor at the Pickering Nuclear Generat- ing Station was shut down early Wednesday morning following a small leak of radioactive heavy water. The leak was from a valve in the unit's heat transport system, which carries heat from the uranium fuel in the reactor and transfers it to steam generators. About 100 litres of heavy water spilled into a contained area in the reactor build- ing. There was no release into the environment out- side the station. A date has not been set for the restarting of the reactor, which was shut down after the spill for repairs and will now have some other maintenance work done on it as well. "Obviously it's significant because we shut our unit down to fix it" said Ontario Hydro spokesman Terry Young of the leak. "But it's not sig- nificant in terms of its effect on the environment. (The shutdown) demon- strates our approach to safety. When we have a problem we fix it:' P Grannies rotest at nuclearWant p the nuclear industry in general. "We have concerns for the future, the environment, the clean-up, the kind of Protection- ism that builds up with this kind of industry;" says Mrs. Dunphy. After Chernobyl, nobody can not be concerned about nuclear." The 60 members attending the unconvention will arrive at thv Pickering station around 10 a.m. Coincidentally, Hydro is holding tours Saturday for the overflow of people it couldn't accommodate at an open house last spring. "We're not trying to get other people to join us, we're making a statement;" says Mrs. Dunphy. "We want to get our point across. our concerns, so that people will stop and think about it and talk about it" BY MARIANNE TAKACS STAFF REPORTER PICKERING — Several 'Raging Grannies' are joining the chorus of concern over the Picker- ing nuclear station. Sixty members of the group from across Canada plan to gath- er at the plant Saturday morning to sing songs of protest against the nuclear industry. ' T'he idea is to get our mes- sage across in a non -threatening, non -confrontational way:' says Kathleen Dunphy of the Grannies' Toronto chapter. "We make up songs to popular tunes" The group, which now has chapters in 15 Canadian cities, started about 10 years ago in Vic- toria, British Columbia. "There were some older women who were really upset about the nuclear warships in the harbor" says Mrs. Dunphy. So the women got organized, put on 'granny' gear — funny hats and shawls — named themselves the Raging Grannies and went out to protest. They got plenty of atten- tion and other Grannies chapters sprung up across Canada, making their views known on nuclear Power, clear-cut logging and abo- riginal rights. "Several have been arrested over the years: ' Because the Grannies are holding what they call a national "unconvention" this weekend in Scarborough, they decided it would be an ideal opportunity to express their concerns about the Pickering station, what has been going on at Ontario Hydro, and FUTURE SHOP Frida Saturday, Sunday, Monday Special Only! 180MHz Processor With Media6X Technology- Uncompromising Features At An Unbeatable Value COMPkI[I 2200 PRESARIO 1 • 64-bit graphics with Deed 3D • MPEG full screen video ploybock • 33.6K fox/dolo modem for speedy Internet camecbns • Phantom subwoofer designed for extra bass • Audio m and N, video player • 16 bit oem sound • Bx speed (D ROM for fast dab access • Microsoft Enwrta 97 6Kydoped'a MPEG • Slim Gty 2000 • Microsoft Works t , t t• t Srah 12 MONTHS NO INTEREST ON ALL TV's, CAMCORDERS, DVD's Cdnon Its W+ Stereo Carcard9 n MIl1r cele.r rwwfi ww • lbemer • Ad.w(td Aeon" AF/AE • 5 prger wk exMitt • Dyed elltos • hiltie lifer • lne a ttcaim •Instory obvilim r 6798 rlpaeStill OR* ne rogle Nr(«aer Wi1111 Clew Yiwr%NW • 741 (nem JVRG forme ""m emu head "- -i :' .c : L'.'_!i i''i .. li ar..%•. i..i:75: //. .:1 i' :... .t.l._ .-__...__._T_.-_7-•.._w....;.Trr--...__r.... r --_..►..-".-_.-ate- _ __.. .. ^., THE (YEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1997 -PAGE S TULRi,E SHOP 30" Stereo Television TOSHIBA 1w isea 1, Ttdbo's dark tww m I(I. r Make I h11t 1MOCW 110(11 owe M eatrao(dotery de(ei w1 www lie taloa, drle ih stteelq 6o wrtowd systtr adds o new diversion to swoo sowJ. L IS 2H5 PHONE: 683-5110 FAX: 683-7363 Publisher: Tim Whittaker ♦ Editorial Have your say on downloading If it's true the pen is mightier than the sword, vot- ers in Ajax and Pickering could wield considerable power over the Province's tax pooling plan come the November municipal election. Voters turning out for civic elections Nov. 10 will be asked to fill in an additional ballot seeking their opinions on the downloading of service costs tradi- tionally in the Province's purview, and on the notion of pooling property tax to pay for services in other GTA communities. It's important to note that Durham Region has estimated the effects of downloading on property tax bills here will increase per -household costs by up to $244 annually. That's contrary to the pledge made by Premier Mike Harris and Municipal Affairs Minister Al Leach that downloading will be "revenue neutral - and won't increase our taxes. With such disparate views, it is profoundly important for citizens in Ajax and Pickering to exer- cise their franchise on Nov. 10 and send a clear message to Queen's Park about where you stand. So far, there has been little public consultation on the downloading issue; there has been even less information provided in terms of dollars and cents. A referendum conducted locally, in municipali- ties where the effects will be felt most tangibly. may give the provincial government room to pause. It may give MPPs cause to reconsider. It may, per- haps, confirm for them they are indeed doing the right thing. Whatever the outcome, it gives you a voice in participating in the debate. Take advantage of it. Vote with your conscience. And move forward with your fellow Ontarians. A To respond to this editorial call Infosource at 1 nffoSoe. 683-7040 and dial 5104 ♦You said it,... Ajax Pickering News Advertiser Publisher: Tim Whittaker A Metroland Community Newspaper v Letters to the editor Voucher system answer to beef on education funding? To the editor: In his letter of Sept. 3, Timothy C. Rollins complains that the "Roman Catholic church gets preferential treat- ment at the expense of all other reli- gious groups" As an example, he decries the existence of a Catholic Children's Aid Society because none exists for other religious denomina- tions. The reason is sheer volume, with nearly half the population Catholic. There simply aren't enough Jewish people and Buddhists he mentions to form province -wide societies of their own. They and Protestants are ably served by the regular CAS. He neglects to mention the status of hospitals. Many are operated by reli- gious groups other than Catholic, such as Jewish, Salvation Army and United Church — all funded by the govern- ment. Mr. Rollins doesn't hesitate to take a swipe at the thriving separate school system. However, if he were astute enough, he would know that Catholic schools have a constitutional right to exist here, the same as Protestant schools in Quebec. He bemoans the funding meted out to Catholic school boards but avoids saying that Catholics as well as non-Catholics provide this funding through their taxes and Catholics only expect their rightful share. But perhaps some good can he derived from his letter and others like it if the unfairness he perceives leads to the introduction of the voucher system. In this system, parents would be given education vouchers to be applied to private or religious schools if they so chose. This would please those parents who complain that God has been kicked out of the public system, with prayer being made a crime and lifestyles promoted which are directly contrary to their beliefs. Yet it's a shame it takes such an event for some people to get involved. People spent their own time travelling great distances to pay tribute to the People's Princetis, waited in lines and spent money on the memorial CD or just took the time to write a letter to the editor to convey the impact she's had on their lives. I've never seen such an outpouring of emotion for someone, for the most part no one has ever personally met. Ironically, all we kncnv about Diana came from the same people who are now being painted as the vultures who contributed to her death. Although I personally don't understand the massive Diana movement I don't want to belittle someone else's personal feel- ings. But how many of these people who bought the memorial CD to help Diana's charities and those who bought flowers and cards share the same enthusiasm for the many charities in their own backyards so desperately in need of support both financially and through volunteer of o s ► I suspect very few. There's no shortage of deserving char- ities. Th: United Way has kicked off it,; fund-raising campaign which affects numerous local social agencies, the Red Crass is crying out for blood donors and each year food bank officials plead for assistance to ensure local families don't go hungry. Diana's death should not only light a fire in people to give their time to their communities, but acknowledge those local people who already do. There are so many deserving people locally who give their time to charities; people who donate their time and then go back to care for their own families, not catch a private jet to go skiing in the Alps or boating in the Caribbean. They should be heroes in our oyes, equal to Diana, if not more so. Believe me, they're out there, but you won't see them on Hollywood television programs or on the covers of trashy tabloids. If we all spent a little less time studying the lives of celebrities and more time working to improve our communities we'd all be better off. 7'be News Advertiser is one of the Mcuolead Printing. Befit Nafstad Lyftingsmo, director of the board of edu- cation in Akershus County, near Oslo, notes the two boards of education were finalists for the Carl Bertels- mann Award which went to the Durham board last year as best school system in the world. "We have something to learn from each other," she says. "We want to look at the development work going on here in the Durham school board " Erling Daehlie, principal of a secondary school in Nor- way, says, "I think there is a lot of things that interest us, especially the teacher -train- ing programs. "I think we have a lot of things we can share with them," says Leo Plue, the Durham co-ordinator of the visit. "It's not just what they can learn from us ... it's what we can learn from them." Mr. Plue, who is also the co-ordinator of secondary school reform for the Durham board, says the focus of the week is reforms in sec- ondary education. He says the board fre- quently receives calls from other school boards asking if they can visit. For example, the board is expecting a dele- gation from Scotland at the end of October. The 37 -member Norwe- gian delegation took part in training sessions at the board offices Thursday on a series of topics ranging from orga- nizing a small school to teacher development. The delegation was to visit secondary schools through- out the region on Friday. Mr. Daehlie says he has been "really impressed" by the amount of time and effort. Durham staff have devoted to the delegation. "We'll face quite a job if and when they come to Nor- way. You can of course bring them indoors, roots and all, and try to continue growing them in pots. This works better for some than others. I have had success with scented geraniums, rosemary. chives and some of the thymes. Herbs grown out of doors, when first brought inside look so healthy it's easy to forget just how vulnerable they are. The change in growing conditions is drastically different. Light for one thing is great- ly reduced. Changes in temperature vary ... Gen- erally. our homes are consistently the same tem- perature night and day. Out of doors night-time temperatures drop more drastically. Water requirements need to be considered too. Once potted up, I always cut the plants back to about three or four inches above soil level. Inside, the new emerging leaves will acclimatize more easily to indoor conditions than the ones that enjoyed mother nature's atmosphere out- doors. Insects can be a problem! Immediately before transferring any plants indoors do something to get rid of the bugs. Aphids, white fly and spider mites are the worst. Some gardeners do not advocate any kind of chemical sprays: if you are one of these sorts, there are insecticidal soaps that can be very effective, or you can choose one of the more potent chemicals found on the retail- ers' shelves ... whatever your conscience will allow. Whichever you choose, thoroughness is the main thing. I lay tlx: pots on their sides and make sure all surfaces of the leaves and stems are sprayed. When you bring herbs indoors, simulate the light conditions as much as possible. A general rule of thumb is to give as much light as possible. At first don't let them dry out. You might have to water every day, if they arc in a particularly sunny window. You can always take cuttings from herbs, but Billboard FRIDAI'. Meet at 10 a.m. just remember few herbs will root in water, with the exception of some of the mints like spearmint, orange mint and apple mint. For starting herbs I like to use horticultural vermiculite because it retains water so well and has some structure to anchor developing roots. Herbs that can be prop- agated from cuttings are basil, catnip, rosemary, savory, pineapple and garden sage, thyme, lemon balm. and tarragon. The usual length of time required to root cut- tings is four to six weeks for herbs like lemon balm, thyme and basil. Cuttings from rosemary and artemesia take even longer. As you might guess members of the mint family root quickly. Some of the most desirable herbs root so poorly and take so long I think it's better to buy some small plants than to struggle with cuttings. At this time of year most of the garden centres are not well -stocked for herbs, but Richtcrs' Greenhouses in Goodwood specialize in them and have an outstanding selection year round. You can always start some seed indoors too. Basil in particular has been successful for me this way. If you can't be bothered with all that and just want to harvest your herbs and preserve them you have a few options. You can dry them of course. This is as simple as hanging them upside down in a dry place and then crumbling them up. You can microwave them too. Many cookbooks advise using this method. Chopping them up and freezing them is another way. 1 have always done this with pars- ley and the results are excellent. Recently 1 heard of another method I'm going to try. Herc it is: Wash thoroughly whatever herb you want to pre- serve, chop finely and pack into a plastic con- tainer, take an equal amount of good vegetable oil, (olive oil would be nice if you like to flavor) and freeze. And that's it! When you have a recipe that calls for fresh herbs just scoop out what you need and you are all set. Trucker charged for traffic violations Wheel assembly breaks; fine of $2,000 to $50,000 possible OSHAWA — An Oshawa trucker has been _charged after the wheel assembly broke off his five -ton dump truck in the city's north end. The owner -operator of the 1981 GMC truck was charged Wednesday following an investi- gation by Durham Regional Police's traffic management unit (TMU). The truck was travelling on Hillcroft Street near Wilson Road last Friday around 3 p.m. when one of the rear dual wheel assemblies broke away, says Sergeant Rick Bates of the TMU. The wheels rolled along the roadway and stopped without further incident, he says. Police were called to the scene and an inves- tigation was conducted by Constable Jean- Louis Hinds, a commercial vehicle inspector with the TMU. The inspection revealed the truck was over its capacity at the time and the wheel studs were not secured properly, police say. In addition, the rear lights were defective and the parking brake was not functioning, police say. Police have charged Arnold Arnburg, 62, under the new Ontario Truck Safety Regula- tions with having an unsafe commercial vehi- cle. He's scheduled to appear in court in Whit- by on Nov. 5. The truck's licence plates have also been seized by police and the truck removed from service. Under the new provincial regulations which went into effect at the start of this month, the truck owner could face a minimum fine of $2,000 and a maximum fine of $50,000, says Sgt. Bates. Police N:lieve this is the first charge of this nature to be laid in this area since the introduc- tion of these new regulations, says Sgt. Bates. photo by Andrew Iwanowski String for a puppet Four-year-old Alexander Mahoney gets some help from Elizabeth Davie as he makes a puppet at the Artfest held in Esplanade Park in Pickering last Saturday. "It's public consultation about crime in general and youth crime in particular:' says Mr. Flaherty, who reports the com- mission has already held hearings in Chatham, Barrie and Etobicoke and will also go to Peterborough, Ottawa and the Niagara area this fall. "Mr. (Premier Mike) Harris want.% us to come up with resolutions that will reduce crime:' he says. Mr. Flaherty says statistics show crime is actually decreasing "but that's not what we're hearing from people at these public hearings" The Young Offenders Act "is widely disliked and perceived as inflective:' he adds. During hearings, the commission has heard from teachers, police officers, parole officers and even young people on topics such as boot camps, truancy laws, zero tolerance for violence in schcx)ls and tougher legislation for young criminals, Mr. Flaherty says. The commission members have also been discovering how youth crime and crime prevention is handled throughout the world. U '[FALL F", I E R` CLEaG3QNCE SALM. COLE SPECIAL TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER Movie Watch rates movies by how many times I check my watch, with one being the best and five the worst. McHALE'S NAVY starring Tom Arnold and David Alan Grier, directed by Bryan Spicer rated PG Tom Arnold is Quinton McHale, an ex - naval officer turned big-time smuggler. He supplies the local Caribbean naval base with all of the necessities of life such as pinball machines, ale and ice cream. When the new commander arrives, played by Dean Stockwell, all the stuff must go and McHale is banned from the base. Then things get worse. The second worst terrorist in the world arrives at a nearby island and devises a plan to create a new world order which, of course, includes the use of nuclear weapons. When the Pentagon hears of this, it decides only one man can handle the job. That man is Lt. Commander Quinton McHale. He rejoins the navy on his terms with his own motley crew of sailors. This family-oriented comedy is about average for laughs and story line. Audi- ence members will recognize many mem- bers of the supporting cast, which includes 3rd Rock From The Sun's French Stewart, Ellen's Bruce Campbell and the original McHale, Ernest Borgnine. I checked my watch 4 times. CASPER A SPIRITED BEGINNING starring Steve Guttenberg & Rodney Dan- gerfield, directed by Sean McNamara rated G 'The Friendly Ghost' returns in this video sequel that tells how Casper and his Uncles Stretch, Stinky and Fatso became a family. Casper has skipped haunting classes and ends up learning some of the tricks from 'The Ghostly Trio'. The only prob- lem is that this isn't allowed. Every ghost must go through haunting class to get their licence. This is why Snivel has been sent out to get them. To make matters worse, the house they are haunting is scheduled for demolition by Steve Guttenberg. The only hope the ghosts have is to convince him the house should stay as a historical landmark. This video suffers from many of the problems of straight -to -video sequels. However, it is highlighted by Pauly Shore's unusually toned -down perfor- mance as Snivel and Michael McKean, a militia -style demolition man who will stop at nothing to get the job done.
