Though Liberal candidate Dan

Wednesday night for the riding of

out to be a rather
low-key affair.
The forum at

membership
includes local gun Table sc. aps'

Progressive Conservative candi-
date Leanne Lewis, the NDP's Doug
Grey and the Reform Party's Ken

payments for education and health

steps will make Puckering a safer place to

Sutton in reference to the 14 recommen-

The group's other co-dtaimtart, Jill
Foster, noted both the Town and resi-

money and commitment in oder to
make the recommendations work.

However, there were no heated
exchanges or knock -out punches

defend their own platform in the face
of questions from each other and the
audience.
Ms. Lewis maintained an intrusive

Canadians' quality of life with high
taxes and debt. She said the Conser-

candi*dates
We know we (the News Advertiser, that is) aren't
the first and last word when it comes to the federal
election in the two local ridings (Pickering -Ajax -
Uxbridge and Whitby -Ajax) which make up our
coverage area.
But, the responses to our federal election ques-
tionnaire, which all candidates in the ridings
received, provide an interesting look into what
we're getting ourselves into.
Don't get us wrong. who will get elected is ulti-
mately up to you to decide. But we learned some-
thing from both the process and the substance of
the answers candidates provided.
On the process: Some of the candidates were
quick to return their answers to us, easily beating
the deadline we imposed and writing concise, well -
thought -out answers to our direct questions. Some
candidates clearly counted the words in their
responses being careful to come in under the 75 -
word limit. These candidates have our thanks and
our respect, though not necessarily our endorse-
ment.
On the substance of the responses: Each candi-
date returned answers which were eloquent,
expressed with conviction, and which contained
ideas offering very different methods of governing
our nation.
And those differences between the candidates
provided the most compelling reaction here. Each
candidate — and each candidate's party — tend to
agree on which are the important issues facing their
constituents. But, the way they propose to go about
addressing those issues are extremely interesting.
You may disagree with one or all, but at the very
least you'll see some subtle and not -so -subtle dif-
ferences in philosophies, approaches and pledges.
The report in today's News Advertiser, we
believe, is a fair and insightful representation of
what the candidates and their parties stand for in
seeking your vote June 2.
We encourage you to closely read the answers
the candidates offered (on pages 28 and 29) in
today's News Advertiser.
We know the exercise has helped us get to know
them a little better. We hope it helps you decide as
well.

CPP premium
increase good
investment
To the editor:
In the story of the Whitby -Ajax
Riding federal election all -candidates'
meeting in the May 16 News Advertiser.
Reform Party candidate Bill Serjcantson
is reported as stating an increase in the
Canada Pension Plan premiums is equiv-
alent to a tax increase, and called the
increase substantial, the biggest increase
in the country's history.
Premiums to the CPP are net taxes.
Although they are part of government
spending, people get a return on the
money spent.
What the federal government did,
with agreement from the provinces, was
to improve the plan and to ensure its
future as the public has been demanding
for a number of years.
This is a good investment when you
consider that a person who has been pay-
ing the maximum amount for a given
number of years can receive a monthly
pension almost equal to one year's
employee contribution based on the 1996
rates.

Once you
know it all, real
learning starts
To the editor:
As I was reading John Doleweerd's
guest column in the May 14 News
Advertiser headlined 'Tories abdicate
duties in name of fighting deficit', it
struck me how tlx: young third -year York
University student's thinking reminded
me of myself when I was that age.
So, without criticizing York
University, I would like to pass on to Mr.
Dolewecrd what I was told by my dad:
"It's what you learn after you know it all
that really counts.
My dad was right.
Once you know it all, the real life learn-
ing starts ... and never ends.

What to do
with my vote
I'm in the middle of a classic
Canadian dilemma — do I base my vote
on a local candidate or on a national
party?
Alter seeing the hopefuls in my riding
of Whitby -Ajax in action, Relbrmer Bill
Serjtantson has impressed me the mcnt.
but there's no way I'd ever vote for the
party. It's too extreme and Preston
Manning sounds too whiny.
I'll fess up and admit the Ncu
Democratic Party is my usual choice.
But, NDP leader Alcxa McDonough Ire-,
conceded the party won't win and is run-
ning fix second place, at best. And. I'm
looking for a platform not based on tax-
ing the wealthy (not that I'm enc of those
wealthy types).
TFx Canadian Action Party has IxKen-
tial. How can you not be impressed by a
political party that introduce% itself with a
comic hoiok? But they aren't running can-
didates in every riding and have nr,
chance of firming a government.
1 have a problem with itis Liberals and
that's where the local vs. national dilem-
ma comes in. Local candidate Judi
Lortgfiekl seems to know her stud' and
would probably be- a litre MP But, Fin
Mg interest in Prime Minister Jean
lien. The one Ubcral 1 like is I'aul
Martin.
I'vc ruled out the Progressi%c
Conservatives. I'm just not buying that
'we'll cut your taxes 10 per cent and hal-
ance the budget' line. A let of things look
good on paper. Putting them in place is
another matter altogether.
There arc the options of not voting at
all or casting a protest vote. But those
choices seem to be such a waste. Voting is
a duty, so I'll vote. And, 1'd rather vote for
somebody instead of against someone.
Another dilemma is whether to vote at
an advance poll or wait until June 2. If I
cast my ballot early, I'll probably sit
around thinking I made the wrong choice.
With all these things to consider, the
voting philosophy once in place in
Chicago seems to be the best — vote
early and often.

troubleshooting ability. "I like to professionally solve problems at the least most
reasonable cost to the customer. Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire
perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles but that is because it is
absolutely necessary. What I won't do is quote on an
expensive excavation type repair when I know a simple
little interior injection will solve the problem. Give the a
solid concrete foundation and 90% of the time I can
inject the problem with polyurethane by standing on the
inside and pumping right through the wall. Block
foundations should be repaired from the outside but I try
to isolate the problem within 10-15 ft. to minimize the
excavation necessary"
Gordon says "home owners should invest in their =

Defininga Kitchen Project Can Make the'WorkEasier
When planning a kitchen project,
the easiest part is often the
aesthetics. Most individuals know
the overall colors and styles that they
want to incorporate into the space.
The harder part is knowing what
materials and products to include in
order to create the desired look.
"it is very important to have an
understanding of the pros and cons
of the various cabinets and surface
materials that are available;' explains
Doris Lacroix, CKD, CBD, 1997
president of the National Kitchen &
Bath Association (NKBA).
Part of the process, according to
Lacroix, is knowing the terminology.
Following are some important
definitions to learn as you prepare
for a kitchen project.
Cabinets
A recent study conducted
by the NKBA shows that
cabinetry accounts for a
major portion (53 percent)
of the total cost of a kitchen
project. Indeed, cabinets
can be a fecal point in the
kitchen in both an
economic sense and a
design sense.
Stock cabinets — These
arc standard cabinets that
are produced in large
quantities in advance. As
they are produced in
quantity, special units are
not available. However,
manufacturers do offer a
wide range of widths and styles, and
they are the least expensive choice.
Custom cabinets —These cabinets
are manufactured on a kitchen -by -
kitchen basis after the kitchen has
been designed and sold. Special
sizes can be produced for a perfect
tit in any kitchen, and they are
available in a wide range of wood
species, finishes and special sizes.
Semi -custom cabinets — Semi -
custom cabinets are produced by
both stock and custom
manufacturers on a stock basis. They
have many more standard interior
fittings and accessories than regular
stock units.
Countertops
Choosing the appropriate
countertop material is essential

because it adds to the overall
aesthetics of the design, but it must
also be practical.
Decorative laminate — According
to Lacroix, laminate is very durable
and easy to clean, and it is available
in hundreds of colors and patterns.
However, it is subject to cuts and
burns from hot pots, and once
damaged, it cannot be repaired.
Solid surface — Solid surface
materials are easy to customize to a
given space, and they combine well
with other materials. If damaged,
solid surface materials can be
repaired.
Ceramic tile — This material
offers tremendous versatility in
colors, patterns and customizing. It
is also quite durable and will not cut,

Plan a Perfect HomeOffice
For millions of working
people, alarm clocks, rush-
hour traffic, and crowded
transit buses and trains are a
part of everyday life. For
them, the daily grind begins at
the crack of dawn when dream
time ends with the dreadful,
incessant ringing of the alarm.
They could walk through their
morning routines with their
eyes closed — and,
oftentimes, they do — looking
forward only to the time that
evening when they will return
to the solace of their homes.
As they absent-mindedly
inch their way through
commuter traffic, they
daydream about those lucky
people who don't have to
withstand this ordeal. What
many of them don't realize is
that they could be lucky as
well. They could avoid all
these hassles with a little
invested time, money and
space.
The building of a home office
invokes mixed feelings in
many people, with good
reason. It's difficult to take on
such a project when you don't
know what to expect. The
anticipation of all the
planning, designing and
furnishing is enough to make
most people give up before
they begin. To help make it
through this task with sanity
intact, would-be builders
should pick up a copy of "The
Complete Hume Othce"
(Viking Studu ti. l h"
Alvin Rosenbaum.
A regional planner, designer
and writer from a home office
of his own design. Rosenbaum
has compiled the first
illustrated guide to home-
office planning. While other
texts have discussed
establishing a home office as

Saturday afternoon, "The
Complete Home Office"
examines this project for what
it really is, an addition that
"will have enormous
consequences on your life,
your income, your family and
your sanity"
This comprehensive book
will help you determine:
• a realistic budget for
building, equipping and
operating an office at home:
• «hom you should call about
zoning regulations and
obtaining construction
permits:
• which is the most efficient
computer and electronic
equipment for your needs:
• how to plan an office that
meets your needs now and is
adaptable for the future.
An estimated 40 million
Americans currently work at
home, and this number grows
by more than 3 million each
year. Anyone can enjoy the
ease and comfort of working
at home. All it takes is the
proper setting and "The
Complete Home Office" to
help plan the work space for
maximum efficiency.

Fend off Those pesky Meas
Fleas will literally jump at the
lance to attach themselves to
ur family pet, and will happily
tch a ride indoors. Once inside
iur house, these small, hardy
,-sts will set up residence and
pidly multiply.
Fleas have sucking
c)uthparts that are used to feed
i the blood of mammals such
rodents, family pets, and even
imans. While feeding, fleas
oduce a secretion that causes
in irritation and discomfort. It
s been estimated that as many
as one in three visits to the
local neighbourhood
veterinarian are due to flea -
related problems. In addition to
irritating skin, fleas can also
cause tapeworm infestations,
behavioral changes, and in
young or very old animals,
anemia.
But you can battle back
against flea attacks if you take
the proper steps. Outside the
house, apply a proven product
such as carbaryl insecticide to
shrubs, woody areas, around
entranceways and to areas
where your pet sleeps or rests.
Inside your home, wash your
pet's blankets and other
bedding material in hot, soapy
water. Be sure to vacuum your
carpets and upholstered
furniture regularly, paying
special attention to crevices
and corners near baseboards,
where fleas love to hide.
Immediately dispose of the
vacuum bag so that it will not
become a breeding ground for
fleas in your closet.

Lost World roars into Durham
Now playing at Moviplex 9,
Pickering:
Anaconda: Eric Stoltz, Jen-
nifer Lopez. An expedition goes
hunting for a man-eating snake. A
reptile lover's delight. Look for
some top-notch special effects
and a slithery villain you could
swear was a living, breathing
thing.
Austin Powers: Mike Myers,
Elizabeth Hurley. A '60s secret
agent is frozen in time and
brought back in the '90s in this
retro -comedy. An affectionate
spoof of the psychedelic era.
Watch out for those new bell bot-
toms.
Breakdown: Kurt Russell,
Kathleen Quinlan. Russell goes
into action overdrive in this high-
way thriller about a man whose
wife is kidnapped when their car
breaks down.
Father's Day: Robin
Williams, Billy Crystal. Colette
(Natasha Kinski) has her ex -
lovers Jack Lawrence (Billy
Crystal) and Dale Putley (Robin
Williams) searching for a run-
away son they never knew they
had. Jack and Dale run into each
other and realize they're looking
for the same person.
Fifth Element: Bruce Willis,
Gary Oldman. Another Bruce
Willis action thriller but with a
futuristic twist.
Grosse Pointe Blank: John
Cusack, Joan Cusack. A hit man
for hire attends his high school
reunion with often hilarious
results.
Liar, Liar: Jim Carrey. A
lawyer can't lie for 24 hours after
his young son gets his birthday
wish. Another comedic showcase
for Carrey. Suffice it to say. Car -

Steven Spielberg's blockbuster
Jurassic Park is back with a pre-
historic roar.
A scientific team returns to the
island where dinosaurs were rein-
troduced in this latest edition of
the sci-fi thriller.
Spectacular special
effects and plenty of bone -
crunching mayhem are
expected to make this one of
the summer's blockbusters.
Volcano: Tommy Lee

many times l cheek my watch, with
one being the best and five being the
worst.
There weren't any major studio
releases in the theatres this week
because for the studios summer
starts
Memorial Day weekend, which
just happens to be next week. After
that, you can expect nothing short
of major titles opening every week.
The video market picks up the
slack this week by releasing four
major titles.
The first is a battle in the stars
and on Earth in Star Trek: First
Contact (rated /aA). This is the
eighth film in the series and it is
directed by 'Number One' himself,
Jonathan Frak&.
Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart)
and the rest of the crew return for
another adventure in the 23rd centu-
ry with a new Enterprise and old
enemies.
This time the infamous Borg is
their main concern as they are on a
destructive course that is aimed
right at Earth.
The Enterprise arrives just in
time to stop the Borg from assimi-
lating the planet in the 23rd century
but not before the crew has the
chance to launch a time -travelling
probe.
Caught in its wake, the crew
members travel back along with it
and discover they have only one
chance to stop the Borg from domi-
nating the planet forever.
There are many new faces in the
Star Trek universe, including James
Cromwell (Babe) who plays
Cochrane, the inventor of the warp
drive.
His invention allows for space
travel and is the reason humans
make "first contact".
This movie is not only carried
along by the horrifying story of the
Borg but by a great musical score as
well. If the Star Trek series contin-
ues to stay in the sci-fi/action drama
genre, it will definitely continue on
into the next century.
I checked my watch only two
times.
The other major release that
comes to video this week is
Sylvester Stallone's movie in which
he searches for Daylight (rated
14A). This subterranean disaster
► flick was directed by Rob Cohen,
who directed the Oscar -nominated
Dragonheart just last summer.
k When a runaway car crashes into
a truck carrying toxic waste in an
underground tunnel, the result is a
massive explosion that seals both
ends.
Emergency experts find there is a
way in but it can't be used as a way
out. Taking the chance that he may
-tot come out alive, Stallone goes in
tto try to save the survivors.
t Over the past year the disaster
t genre has been used by Hollywood
quite a bit.
However, this one has some
memorable moments, namely the
;mother of all movie explosions at
the start of the film.
ff Not only is it loud but it has to be

questions the
candidates
Doug Grey
NDP
Ken Griffith
Reform
Leanne Lewis
Progressive
Conservative
In order to give our readers a means of
comparing the candidates in the federal
election, the News Advertiser asked each
candidate to answer three questions.
The questions were delivered earlier this
month to each candidate followed up by
email messages (to those who have email)
reminding them of their deadline of May 16.
1. What is the single most impor-
tant current issue in YOUR RID-
ING which must be addressed by
the federal government? What
should be done about it?
On May 20 and 21 phone calls went out to
those candidates who missed their dead-
line.
Candidates were asked to keep their
answers to a maximum of 75 words per
question. Answers which exceeded 75
words were edited to comply with the
restriction.
2. Faced with a clear-cut vote on
i an issue where the majority of
your consitituents are on one
side of the issue and your party is
on the other, on whose side do
you vote?

ondary institutions.
3. What is the single most impor-
tant current issue across CANA-
DA which must be addressed by
the federal government? What
should be done about it?
Creating jobs is the single most important
issue across Canada.
The NDP would fight to:
• Make full-time jobs a priority.
• Set targets to cut the unemployment rate in
half in the next term.
• Ensure the Bank of Canada makes employ-
ment growth its central priority.
• Establish a national program to protect
Canada's environment, creating thousands of jobs
in pubic transit and commuter rail, water and
sewage treatment, waste management and recy-
cling.

The most important issue is jobs. It is clear
the Liberals have no plan. We have a clear plan to
energize the economy. A Jean Charest govern-
ment will eliminate the barriers to job creation.
We will immediately reduce El premiums. We
will immediately begin reducing personal taxes
by 10 per cent over our first mandate. Be confi-
dent, this can be done while balancing the budget
and restoring health care funding by setting the
right priorities.
Since 1993, the Liberal government has pro-
vided economic stability and sound fiscal man-
agement. We have met and surpassed our deficit
targets and have reduced the federal deficit from
roughly $40 billion to $9 billion and we will soon
eliminate it entirely. Interest rates are the lowest

My record clearly shows that on issues of
importance to a majority of my constituents, I
have voted according to their wishes. Whether it
be on gun control or opting out of the gold-plated
MP pension plan, I was sent to Parliament to rep-
resent the views and interests of the people who
elected me. I would continue to do just that, even
if it places me at odds sometimes with the posi-
tion taken by my party.

Our government will build on its sound finan-
cial performance to provide more employment
opportunities for Canadians. We will invest in key
areas such as science, innovation and technology
and assist growth industries to create jobs for
today and the next century. As witnessed by the
Team Canada trade missions, we are working to
increase international trade. We will also provide
the infrastructure and specialized training pro -
grains necessary to develop a highly skilled and
employable workforce.

questions the
candidates
Karen Dolan
NDP
Judi Longfield
Liberal
Robert Radford
Canadian Action
Party
Bill Serjeantsen
R Pfnrr"
In order to give our readers a means of
comparing the candidates in the federal
election, the News Advertiser asked each
candidate to answer three questions.
The questions were delivered earlier
this month to each candidate followed up
by email messages (to those who have
email) reminding them of their deadline
1. What is the single most impor-
tant current issue in YOUR RID-
ING which must be addressed by
the federal government? What
should be done about it?
In our particular riding, reversing the ground-
less cuts to health care and education is the most
pressing issue. Job creation runs a close second.
Canada is second only to the U.S.A. as the
richest of the G7 nations and matches closely to
the U.S.A. as the worst on social issues.
Canadians have money but its badly distributed.
This will be corrected with a fair tax to remove
the incredible disparity that currently exists.
Whether one considers health care, jobs, or
justice reform to be the most important issue, I
believe the people of Whitby -Ajax need to know
their MP will stand up, bring their views forward
and he accountable to the people that person has
the privilege of serving. As a councillor for six
years, I have worked hard for my constituents,
served their interests, and put them first. 1 commit
to putting Whitby -Ajax first in Ottawa.
From door-to-door discussions, it became
apparent to me that the most important current
issue to the people in our riding is jobs.
By appropriate direction of its monetary
incentive programs, the government can motivate
banks, corporations and individuals to invest in
the production and consumption of goods and
services, in preference to financing corporate
mergers, take-overs, and speculative investments.
This will create the kind of jobs we need.
Whitby -Ajax has a high percentage of young
families. These young families, like all
Canadians, are struggling under a heavy tax bur-
den heaped on them by successive Liberal and
Tory governments. Reform will reduce taxes for
all Canadians, providing $2,000 in tax relief for
.the average family. Reform will give Canadian
"families choice in child care by extending the
"$3,000-$5,000 child care deduction to all fami-
lies, including families where one patent stays
home.
The most important issue in our riding is jobs.
The Conservative party will make job creation a
riority by: cutting personal income taxes by 10
per cent within the first mandate to give con-
sumers more disposable income and by eliminat-
ing the $5 -billion plus surplus in the El fund.
Employer premiums will be reduced from $4.06
per $100 of payroll to $3.08. Employee premiums
will be reduced to $2.20 per $100 of income,

THE NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY, MAY 23, 19l74AGE 24
of May 16. On May 20 and 21 phone calls
went out to those candidates who missed
their deadline.
Candidates were asked to keep their
answers to a maximum of 75 words per
question. Answers which exceeded 75
words were edited to comply with the
restriction.
2. Faced with a clear-cut vote on
an issue where the majority of
your consitituents are on one
side of the issue and your party is
on the other, on whose side do
you vote?
I will argue strongly for the views of my con-
stituents within our caucus.
I will vote on the side of my constituents.
3. What is the single most impor-
tant current issue across CANA-
DA which must be addressed by
the federal government? What
should be done about it?
In 1993. 1.5 million Canadians were unem-
ployed. Today. almost 1.5 million Canadians are
still unemployed. Alexa McDonough and
Canada's NDP advocate setting job creation tar-
gets to cut unemployment in half and we would
pursue these targets with the same determination
as the current federal government has pursued
deficit targets.
A healthy, growing economy is the key to
Canada's future. The Liberal government has put
the nation's fiscal house in order. Our deficit
reduction strategy increases investor confidence
and leads to continued low interest rates - the best
recipe for jobs. All economic indicators point to
solid and sustained job growth, and I am confi-
dent under the stewardship of Paul 'Martin, our
economy will prosper.
This situation cannot arise with the Canadian I The Canadian Action Part, considers the sin -

The Canadian Action Pam is committed to
providing this kind of empowerment.
It is a cornerstone of Reform Party policy that
Reform members of parliament must be account-
able to their constituents first and their party sec-
ond.
Canada's chronic high unemployment rate,
more than 9.6 per cent, is a disgrace. Our exces-
sively high youth unemployment rate, more than
17 per cent, a national tragedy. High debt equals
high taxes equals high unemployment. Reform
will eliminate the deficit in two years and provide
Canadians with meaningful tax relief to create t
millions jobs by the year 2001. Reform will
immediately reduce EI premiums by 28 per cent
for employers to create 70,000 jobs by 2001.
When elected, we have a mandate to meet the i Jobs are clearly the most pressing issue for all

a will work with all sectors of Canadian society to
address the problems of youth unemployment.
