Stabbed Pickering man collapses in front of Pine Heights Trail home Police seek white male following Sunday night attack PICKERING – Police are investigat- ing the stabbing of a young Pickering man who, bleeding heavily from his wounds, collapsed in front of a local resi- dence Sunday evening. The 18 -year-old Fieldlight Boulevard resident, who was stabbed in the back and right shoulder, knocked on the door of a Pine Heights Trail home seeking help at about 10:15 p.m., Durham Regional Police said. "When police officers and ambulance arrived he was found on the ground unconscious and bleeding badly;" said Sergeant Jim Grimley. He said the victim was rushed to Ajax -Pickering Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, and was later transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. He was scheduled to undergo surgery yester- day for his injuries, which police say are not believed to be life-threatening. -He lost a lot of blood but regained consciousness when given a transfusion at (Ajax -Pickering) hospital:' said Sgt. Grimley, who added the victim indicated to police the stabbing occurred "follow- ing a dispute." Police searched and secured an area in the Pine Heights Trail path where the attack occurred. Sgt. Grimley said detectives had not yet spoken in detail to the victim and don't know what motivated the stabbing. A suspect has been described as male, white, in his 20s, six -feet one -inch, 160 - pounds, skinny with short brown hair and a clean shaven appearance. New strategy to improve customer service for Pickering residents NEW/From page I approved by Council, is to make deal- ing with the Town simple, quick and effective. Now, says Mr. Quinn, resi- dents often get "bounced around a lot" between people and departments when they have questions or need something done. "By the time people get to my office they're usually pretty frustrated and sometimes very angry:" According to a report to Council from Mr. Quinn, the Town currently has no formal policy or procedures in place for staff to follow when dealing with residents, businesses and others. Employees have no formal training in customer service and there is no sys- tem in place to measure customer sat- isfaction. The new plan outlined in the report and approved by Council provides for: * Developing a formal Town -wide customer service policy to provide standards for consistent Ic%cl, of ser- vice by all ernplw cc, * Training cnip1w cc, ;n - . relations skills. * A computer-based customer care system that will keep track of com- plaints and how they are being han- dled. * Customer surveys to measure the quality of service residents and husi- nesses are getting; and monitoring customer complaints to make sure errors are not repeated and service levels are maintained. * Standard follow-up procedures, including immediate investigation, telephone response within 24 hours and written response within five working days. * Opening the Civic Complex late one night per week. * A 'walk -around program' in the community where councillors would visit residents door-to-door to discuss their concerns and ideas. Mr. Quinn notes one of the first steps required to get the necessary changes under way will he to improve internal 'service' to Town staff and councillors, who are also 'customers' under the plan. They need to he ser- viced efficiently so they can attend to the needs of residents and others effi- ciently. She's been trying for some time now to have us all sit up and take notice. Like any good moth- er, she's been trying to teach us to pick up after ourselves, to put things in their place, and to take responsibility for our actions. She's Mother Earth. This is the one week of :he year -,%e celebrate her bounty. But let's take stock: Were recvchrity more pow. but we have a long way to go before we reach landfiil diversion tarLcts. `lane of us have home composters and have learned to turn organ- ic waste into rich soil for our Wardens. Many more. sadly, are still tossing vegetable and fruit peels, egg shells. and other organic extras into our garbage bins instead. w'e're still complaining about the litter that lines the shores of Lake Ontario, or which gath- ers against the fence at our neighborhood park. but we're not using nearly enough of our ener- gies to eliminate the waste and educate our- selves. We're tired of our blue boxes over -flowing with recvcled boxboard, paper and bottles, yet we still cheerfully purchase goods and services without a thought to their impact on the sensitive environment around us. We all nod our heads knowingly when talk turns to water conservation, but will wash one pair of jeans because they fit so well afterwards. We still promise to fix that leaky tap, seal those drafty windows or turn lights off when we don't need them. But we don't. This week is the only one where we stand up and pay tribute to the wonderful excesses Mother Earth provides for us. But more must be done. Stop complaining about litter in your neigh- borhood and organize a community clean-up. Replace that aging washer in your faucets and apply caulking around your windows. Create a home composter and get the family involved. If you do, you'll be helping Mother Earth all year-round. Stop taking her for granted and ask yourself `What have I done for her lately?' Thank you Mr. Golberg for inspiring my first letter to the editor. What you wrote in your April 1let- ter is right on the money. I recently had the pleasure of vis- iting Sinclair Castle for a Progressive Conservative nomina- tion meeting and came away absolutely disgusted by the gross excesses of the building. Even with everything that was going on that night, a great deal of the discussion I heard among people was how ridicu- lous and wasteful the building is. I came away from that night so frus- trated that I was determined to write a letter to the editor but, like so many Canadians, procrastination got the better of me. Until now! I feel it's time for everyone who supports what the Harris government is trying to do, which is to stop the out -of -control spending, to write a letter or make a phone call to their local MPP. You are going to wake one morning to find that you arc on the unemployment line! And guess what. My high school reunion is just around the corner and I'll soon be back at my old stomping grounds at Henry Street High Schoxd in Whitby. You knew what that means, don't you'? I have just 10 days lett to exercise ;away, those unwanted pounds, 10 days to find something to wear and 10 days to think of how to end a conversation with people I haven't seen in 15 years after we've shared pictures of the family, swapped career stories and laughed over a high school memory o r two. I also have 10 days to decide if I'm going to put people to sleep if I tell them the truth about what I've been up to in the :ast 15 years. Would a story about" wrestling my backpack away from a ' crocodile while working in the Lard Down Under sound a little farfetched? How about single-handedly catching a ?5(1_pounci hulk stealing purses from little okf ladies atter hearing about it on the police scanner at work'? (After all, I real- ly do listen to the scanner.) ,.: And would my old pals believe me if I told therm I'm now a wine connoisseur when Baby Duck and Baby Bear used to be my drink of choice — once I was legally able to drink, that is. And would they look at me skeptically if I told them I enjoy classical music when you once couldn't keep me off the dance floor (or kitchen table) when The Go-Gos or The Knack were within listening range:' Would they doubt me if I said I enjoyed gourmet cooking in my spare time when I used to brag about knowing the Colonel's Secret Recipe after working : at a fast food restaurant throughout most of highschool? If they find that stuff hard to swallow, 1 wonder how they'd feel if they heard I've seen a bit of the world since gradua- tion, but my two adorable children and wonderful husband have opened up a whole new world I never dreamed existed and that I couldn't be happier than I am now. Grade 5 students at St. Anthony Daniel Catholic School in Pickering have taken their first bold steps into the world of business. 'Be 30 future community leaden held a graduation ceremony last Thursday after two weeks of leaming the basics of how to start and run a company. Local businessman Richard Moore and teacher Anna Przvhvlo instructed the 10 and I I -year-olds everything from how to get hired to how an assembly line works during daily hour-long classes. W. Moore, branch manager at Hepco e Credit Union in Pickering, shared his experi- ence with the students on Tuesdays and Thurs- days. Mrs. Przybylo reviewed the new materi- al the rest of the week to keep it fresh in the students' minds. Along the way, the youngsters learned about writing resumes, borrowing, marketing, mass production, communication and how a business is organized. Mr. Moore calls the students an "amazing class". 'Chis is the first time he's taught Busi- ness Basics and says he's looking forward to doing it again. He was matched with the class by Junior Achievement, a regional group made up of business people who help teach students about business and help older students start firms. Mr. Moore was impressed by how eager the students are to learn about business at such a young age. "These kids are very aware:' he says. "Trey came up with some amazing sugges- tions: Mn. Przybylo says the class even dis- cussed the stock problems of troubled Canadi- an gold mining company Bre-X Minerals. The business class is "wonderful. I imagine at home, at supper, it has made for very inter- esting conversation" Instruction was made interesting for the students by fun, hands-on activities and exam- ples they could relate to. They discussed the advantages of using basketball superstar Michael Jordan to adver- tise a product and they talked about game manufacturer Nintendo and footwear compa- ny Nike. To teach them about assembling products, Mr. Moore placed pen parts (springs, ball point, coverings) in different containers. Stu- dents worked in groups of six to put the parts together. One student in each group acted as quality control officer, making sure the re- assembled pens worked. Grade 5 students at St. Anthony Daniel Catholic School in Pickering race against the clock to put ball point pens together. The students were learning about assembly line production as part of a Business Basics course they But students say they had the most fun when they created and performed in commer- cials to advertise their products. Each group of six students had to come up with a marketing strategy for a different type of business. One group ran a shoe company, another a video store. Each of the five groups took on the struc- ture of a company, complete with a manager. This was the first time the program has been tried at the school. Mrs. Przybylo says it was "certainly worthwhile. "I received nothing but positive responses from parents" Principal Suzanne Roche called it an "excellent program", adding the school may decide to offer similar programs in Grades 7 and 8. Mrs. Przybylo's decision to invite a busi- ness professional to teach in the classroom was influenced by successful past visits by organizations such as Motorola, which demonstrated its communications equipment. She says such visits give students access to material and knowledge they don't normally encounter at school. After she heard about Junior Achieve - photo by A.J. Groen recently completed with the help of Junior Achievement in Durham Left to right are budding business people Neil Vaz, Chantel !Malik, Cassandra Hastu, Ellisone Punzalan, and Kcvin Mul- grew. merit's programs, the sch(x)i contacted the organization and the class was teamed with Mr. Moore. Mrs. Przybylo says the students and Mr Moore got along right from the scan. Junior Achievement also supplied the class with teaching aids such as hooklets and posters which summarize the lessons. Mrs. Przybylo is "highly in favor" of con- structive and positive partnerships between education and business. "We need each other because Isch(x)lsl don't have enough money. - Mr. Moore says businesses benefit by get- ting valuable feedback from taking part in pro-- grams ro-grams like Business Basics. And they may also benefit when Mrs. Przv- bylo's students eventually enter the work- force. Both she and Mr. Moore were impressed with the knowledge the students hal, their confidence, the interest they showed, the intel- ligent questions they asked and their willing- ness to work together. Businesses planning to recruit employees in the distant future can expect resumes in the next millennium. Rckering, Aja housing market hot in March Sales of new homes in the Greater Toronto Area almost reached 3,100 in March, the highest monthly total since 1989. Of the 3,092 units sold, 37 homes found owners in each of Ajax and Pickering, Greater Toronto Home Builders' Asso- ciation (GTHBA) president David Hirsh reports. Sales in March were the highest monthly total since February of 1989 and the best March total since 1988. In March of last year, sales totalled about 1,850. "Sales took oft' this time last year, yet March has trounced the same month in 1996 by a massive 67 per cent, indicating that there's a great deal of pent- up demand being unleashed," Mr. Hirsh says. "We're thrilled, but let's not get carried away by declaring the upturn a boom. We're approaching what we'd consid- er respectable levels and are on track for sales in the 24,000 to 25,000 range, provided that this level of activity continues," he adds. In 1996, about 20,500 new homes sold in the GTA. The GTHBA has more than 850 members representing home builders, developers, ren- ovation contractors, suppliers and professionai firms.
