Historic
Pickering
farmhouse
rises again
in Claremont
Structure was

BY MARIA'wL TAKACS
1111E RENWIR
PICKE:RING -- The historic
Pickering farmhouse demolished in
Lynn Heights Park last June is set to
rise again in Claremont.
However, the new building will not
he a reconstruction of the original
130-160-vcar-old stone farmhouse.
According to a report from Town
staff, the new structure will rather
replicate the appearance of the origi-
nal "to a reasonahlc extent" .
Last lune. Council approved an
agreement with a developer under
which the developer would dismantle
the house and remove all reusable
,;onstruction materials w a storage
area before using them to reconstruct
the building somewhere in Pickering
within two vcars.
Council had moved quickly to get
the house out of the park at the
request of area residents, after defer-
ring plans six months earlier to desig-
nate it as a historic site and have it
restored for community or private
use.
Heritage Pickering had commis-
sioned an investigation of the proper-
ty which concluded the one -and -a -
half -storey fieldstone house had his-
torical significance and was worthy
of preservation.
But area residents said they didn't
want the house turned into any private
or community facility because it
would create traffic and noise, take
away a portion of the park, block their
view of the park and create a security
hazard.
Councillors were told last week
the proposed reconstruction in Clare-
mont would have an addition to make
it more marketable, additional win-
dows similar to those on other build-
ings of the same vintage, and a differ-
ent internal plan "consistent with the
spirit of a typical centre hall plan"
like the original had. As well, for
cost, energy and other reasons, differ-
ent construction methods are to be
used and not all the original's
reusable materials will be employed.
The executive committee's deci-
sion last week to approve the recon-
struction remains to be ratified toy
Council next week.

police officials
Durham Regional Police officials here have a
tough sell on Ihcir hands with the merger of the Ajax
and Pickering police stations.
Under a new plan which came into effect Monday.
approximately 40 uniformed officers and four detec-
tives assigned to 2.1 Division in Ajax will relocate to
Pickering's 25 Division at Brock and Kingston roads.
The centralized police service will now be known as
.19 Division.
The Ajax station. meanwhile. will remain open as
a 'community policing centre' and will operate the
same hours it no%% does to take reports and provide
assistance to residents.
New lir put-, Chief of Administration Derek
Denson took the edge off the news with a pledge to
see that response times in Ajax will not he negatively
affected. Also. police are now patrolling in zones
based on 'call patterns' to more effectnely cover
areas where crime is more likely to occur.
That too is good news.
But we caution Durham police as they, launch the
new 19 Division. And we urge you to take Deputy
Chief [hnson at his word when he says "this is
something done strictly to be able to police these
communities better."
A %isiblc police presence, particularly in the wake
of such a restructuring, hecomes even more impor-
tant. After all, what good is a 'community policing
centre' it people don -t see police in their neighbor-
h(x)ds 11
Further. Durham Regional Police must provide
somethmg more tangible than kind words if Ajax res-
idents are to accept this merger and support police
officials as they work to more effecti%cly patrol each
community
How, specifically. will the 'community policing
centre' in Ajax fit into the forces overall crime -fight-
ing strategy' \"hat, exactly. are the new patrol zone%
based on call pattems'' How can the loss of uni-
formed officers and detectives to Ajax result in better
policing in the community they're leaving'.'
Tough questions indeed.
But a health% dose of skepticism helps illustrate a
community s commitment to being a partner in the
fight again,( crinin:
Police can and must answer these questions ho
continue the partnership

Of course. dere, more -- the
mail, school visitors, people wanting
the answer yesterday, messages for
staff, reports, letters home. newslet-
ters, psychological reports, tradesmen
doing repairs, ordering of supplies,
registration of new students, and the
all-important but very time-consum-
ing calls from parents wondering if
their children arrived at school safely.
The point is our secretaries and
caretakers are hard working (usually
overworked), caring, dedicated indi-
viduals who do their best to maintain
safe, clean, efficient and inviting
schools for Ontario children.
Secretaries and caretakers are often
employed at schools for years, they
get to know the children and their fam-
ilies and become a niccessary and inte-
gral pan of schdxrl life.
Think about it, parents, would you
really want the secretary and Caretaker
at your child's school replaced by
someone from a secretarial pool or a
contracted cleaning company? Do you
for one minute think that your child or
the seh(oi or you would receive the
same service you receive now? I think
not!

Our lives go on without you,
And nothing is the same,
We trev to hide our heartache,
When someone speaks Your name.
Sad are the hearts that love you,
Silent the teary that fait.
living our lives without you.
Is the hardest part of all.
Fou did so maim things for us,
Your heart was kind and true.
And when we needed someone,
We could a/wavy count on you.
The special tears will not return
When we were all together
But with the lo:e within our hearts
You'll walk with us forever.
