and attitude. In housekeeping. he
noted. "they found us as good as the
average in the world. That's a very pos-

He also noted the reviewers did not
make am references to the pos, lhle
negative safety effects of, the way the
station was being operated. whereas in
a 1995 review there had been several
such references. Another major
improvement. he said. was that every-
one interviewed at the Pickering sta-
tion treated the evaluation seriously
and co-operated fully.
"Before, there was some dcfensiye-
mess."
Problems identified by the review
included:
* control room conduct -- reviewers
found a lot of distractions in the con-
trol room. with people coming in look-
ing for authorizations and various
types of alarms going off.
• maintenance -- maintenance work

Mr. Talb<,t said top priority is being
given to improvements in three areas:
maintenance planning. supervision
and management standards.
"We have to jack up our manage-
ment standards not to accept things
that aren't excellent."
He also noted station management
and union representatives are sitting
down together to discuss how
improvements can he made in the
problem areas identified by the peer
review.
Mr. Talbot has set a goal for the sta-

mance by the year 2000.

boat launching
To the editor:
Re Your article 'High and Dry'
Jan 12, 1997.
1 understand %Ir Bimmngton's
concern with no lunger being able
to contvemcntly launch his fishing
boat from Duflins Creek in Ajax.
L-Uckll\ there are nearby allcrnati%"c,
such as Frenchman's Bay in
Pickering or Whuhy Harbour to
R'hub%, specifically designed for
the needs of boaters.
L as well as many others, spend a
lot of our time protecting and pre-
serving the remaining wetlands in
southern Ontario, including Dull -ins
Creek. It concerns me when in
angler can't sec the immediate need
to protect the place that provides
vital habitat for the very prey (fish)
he hunts for sport.
Mr. Binninglon also says "there's
too much wildlife in the area". Yes.
there are a lot of geese at Dufftns
Creek. They share this habitat with
many other birds. reptiles, mammals
and fish that are adversely affected
by loud motors, oil spills and gas
leaks.

An aiternativc to mariners nut
wanting to pay local marinas to
launch their boats could be building
a boat launch at the fool of Shoal
Point Road in Ajax that goes direct-
ly into Lake Ontario and not
through an en%monmcntally %cnsi-
ti%c area
I'm sure that it enough people
want a "tree" boat launch in Ajax
they will take the time to form a
Committee to design and submit
plans to the local residents. Ajax
Waterfront Ad%i%ory Committee,
Ajax Town Council. Canadian Coast
Guard and raise themoney needed
to construct and maintain this "free"
