recommendations, leaving CUPE
members, who are clerical, office and
technical workers, educational assis-
tants and custodial and maintenance
workers, uncertain about their future.
"The recent
recommendations ... have struck fear
into the hearts of all school board
workers just before Christmas," says
Charlotte Monardo, chairman of
CUPE's committee.
"We are desperately concerned that
the Crombie recommendations could
mean the loss of tens of thousands of
jobs in the education sector."
In Durham, CUPE represents 1,250
workers with the Durham Board of
Education and 450 with the Durham
Region Roman Catholic Separate
School Board.
They arc "worried because of the
uncertainty" but the last thing they
want to do is strike, says CUPE Local
218 president Coralee Bugden
"We don't want to disturb the chil-
dren," she says.
"We don't want to strike. The
province is "playing with lives. It's not
just the 1,7(X) members of LUPE, it's
the teachers. it's the students and their
parents."
Durham Board of Education chajr-
man Ruth Ann Schedlich didn't know
of LUPE threats until contacted by the
News Advertiser.
"I sympathize with them, I really
do ... They're part of the school team,"
she says of non -teaching staff. A would
hate to see their work outsourced and
have some cleaning service come in at
night, for instance."
Mrs. Schedlich wishes A had a crys-
tal hall and could assure them (their
jobs are safe), but I don't. I think we
will be seeing a series of announce-
ments (from the provincial govern-
ment) early in the new year."
Though the Crombie panel has pro-
posed contracting out all non -teaching
work, Mrs. Schedlich doesn't under-
stand how money will he saved.
"The government believes there will
be savings realized, but I believe the

School boards
must find way
to deal with less
They won't admit it, but it's good news for local
school boards that education transfer payments have
been frozen for the coming school year. After a long
year of cuts. Santa Claus Snobelen was in a giving mood
this Christmas.
But the Minister of Education has a problem on his
hands in Durham Region. The local public board has
seen a two per cent student growth rate over the past
year.
The separate board is battling to deal with a whop-
ping fire per cont jump in enrolment. with more stu-
dents coming into the system, there's a need for more
funding and a mill rate increase, right:' Wrong.
There's still some fat in the education syslem. espe-
cially at the administration level. Is c%cry single Job
necessary'' Can some jobs he combined with others:'
We're not corn inced everything has been done to save
dollars.
On the plus side, the local separate board has taken
the intttattse to save money by dropping Oshawa Transit
passes for high school students in favor of private bus-
ing.
Yes the students will have fewer options (school
buses only run at certain times to limited destinations.
unlike Oshawa Transit) but the deal promises to save the
board about $5OO.(X)O per year.
Surcly there arc many other ways to save money.
Could the boards share more services (secretaries. jani-
tors, maintenance workers, equipment) as hospitals are
doing to save even more money''
The education minister has a number of options open
to him in anticipation of the 1998 budget year. There's
been a suggestion that the province's 150 -plus school
boards he dumped in favor of five super -boards
province -wide.
That would certainly save tens of millions of dollars
and not just in trustees' salaries. Imagine going from
150 -plus superintendents of education to five. That's an
immediate cut of close to $15 million.
Following this logic throughout the whole process
would lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in savings.
It's one option for Mr. Snobelen to consider.
Meanwhile, it should be possible for our local boards
to reach the desired level of funding needed without lay-
ing off teachers, and without raising taxes.
We shouldn't expect school boards to eliminate them-
selves, but the Province can do the job if it has a plan in
place which won't hurt the only thing that really matters
— the education of our students.

Elmo madness
defeats spirit of
Christmas
To the editor:
Nk'hile glancing through the classi-
fieds of a recent newspaper, I noticed
four Tickle Me Elmo toys for sale. Three
of them were best offers, while one was
for 5700 firm.
In September. I had one of these toys
in my hand at K -Mart. It was $39.95.
Since that ume they have become quite
popular and are in high demand.
However, in keeping with the true
meaning of Christmas, I find this dis-
gusting. More and more, you hear about
toy and food drives to help needy fami-
lies make ends meet over the holidays.
Many non-profit agencies, fire halls, etc.
are asking for new, unwrapped toys for
those who are less fortunate and then
you read ads for people trying to get rich
on a child's toy.
I hope when these people get what
they want for these dolls they are going
to be able to sleep peacefully with them-
selves over the holidays. I know I
wouldn't.
Is this what Christmas has become?

Amalgamation
could save us a
bundle
To the editor:
So, hydro in Pickering will cost 1.4
per cent less in 1997 (as reported in the
News Advertiser Dec. 21). This trans-
lates into a saving of just more than a
dollar on every $100 spent.
Did I hear someone say Ajax and
Picketing Hydro are going to amalga-
mate and save us a bundle?

Durham RIDE stats jump
significantly this year
Four weeks into its holiday sea-
son blitz, Durham Regional Police
have charged 63 motorists with
drinking and driving.
All of those charged — plus three
who refused to provide breath sam-
ples — immediately had their
licences suspended for 90 days
under new provincial legislation.
RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving
Everywhere) units set up last week
in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa,
Clarington and Brock Township
charged led to 11 motorists being
charged with impaired driving.
So far this year RIDE has laid 32
impaired driving charges — com-
pared to just seven in the same peri-
od last year — while regular police
patrols charged another 30.
Of the 27,215 vehicles checked,
RIDE has also issued 12 -hour sus-
pensions to 68 drivers who blew into
the alcohol "warning" zone.
At this point last year RIDE had
inspected 23.750 vehicles and
issued 12 -hour suspensions to 32
motorists.

Durham board aims to end 'inequality' in sex education
BY CHRIM CHASE
STAFF REPOKIT'R
Teaching methods used in girls -only classes
are finding their way into all Durham Board of
Education schools.
But don't expect to see widespread use of
all -girl classes, says board program superinten-
dent Bev Freedman.
"We are proceeding with the implementa-
tion (of workshops for teachers stressing teach-
ing techniques used in all -female classes) as
opposed to an all -girls pilot at the elementary
level," she says.
Ms. Freedman says a study of all -female
curriculum by the hoard determined there "arc
many lessons that can he learned from all -girl
classes and schools" that are best applied to all
classes for everyone's benefit, not just for

females. This way, both gender can he aware
of the "inequalities" that exist in education, she
says. The hoard's report on all -female programs
states there are "discrepancies" in terms of the
education received by boys and girls. They
have the same aptitude and girls generally score
higher than boys in math and science in Grades
4 to 6, but there's a decline in attitude and
achievement by girls from Grades 7 and 8
onwards, according to the report. Teen females
arc more apt to drop these subjects in high
schox)l which means there are fewer women
seeking careers in math. science and technolo-
gy. In fact, there's some evidence girls receive
less attention, less effective feedback and less
detailed instruction from teachers than boys do
in math and science, the report say.' In solving
problems, females like to work tolgether, co -

operatively rather than in isolation and compet-
itively, the style males favor. according to the
report which also indicates girls like to know
how one experiment fits with another or with
real life rather than larking strictly at theory.
Ms. Freedman says society tar plays a role in
education. Boys are praised for being aggres-
sive and independent while girls are rewarded
for docility. a trait that does not serve them well
when it comes to studying math and u:icncc,
she says.
Ms. Freedman says the traditional style of
teaching often used in science and math doesn't
work as well for females as it does for males.
Bringing in other instructional styles will help
girls learn better, build their confidence and
self-esteem and might even influence them to
stick with math. science and technology cours-
es. "Not one (instructional) style appeals t
everyone. If you have a broad enough range (
teaching styles, the idea is you'll eventuall
handle everything," she says.
Many teachers already in the system use
variety of teaching styles, many aimed at girl
in classes, Ms. Freedman rep()rts. The worl,
shops, for teachers from Grades 4 through t
high ,Lh(x)i, will include things such as mat
with a multicultural outlook, using life exper
ences in science lessons and teaching abut
women who've contributed to math and sc
ences. An all -girl Grade 10 math and scienc
class has been running at O'Neill Collegiate i
Oshawa for two years now. Ms. Freedmansar

Ajax boy battles rareg enetic disease
The puzzle that is Batten's Disease first takes away
childhood. Then it takes away the child.
-- Informration poster
AJAX — In many ways. Dylan Carr is a typical four-
year-old: he's happy, he's independent and he fights with
his older sister.
But in one way. Dylan is ycn different. He suffers
from Batten's Disease. a rare genetic disorder that leaves
him with a lite expectancy of hetwren eight and 12 years.
Batten's affects how brain cells store materials. Suffer-
ers don't ha,,,c en/,,mes to break down the materials. caus-
ing the brain cells to grow and break down.
It's such a rare disease that "most of the medical pro-
fession don't know amthmg about this." says Dylan's
father. Clifl' Carr. "Our doctor didn't know am thing about
this. Ihats not uncommon. A lot are misdiagnosed or
undiagnosed."
Four children in Ontario have tax: disease "that we
know of'. says Dylan's mom. Sue Carr. Therc are more
than 20 cases in Ncwf0undland. but no known cases in
Quebec.
For some reason. there's a large pocket in Finland. Mr.
Carr says it's a "Scandin:ayian disease. It's where it's based.
'Ihere's an international efli)rt in research to identify the
gene involved. Once that's done. they can wort: on treat-
menLs and cure."
There are tour types of Batten's Disease -- infantile.
late infantile, juvenile and adult -- but onl\ the gene for
juvenile Batten's has hecn identified. '-Ir. Carr notes.
Vl'hen Dylan, who has late infantile Battcn's. began
haying seizures. his parents thought he was suffering from
epilepsy. recalls Dad. 'He was on three drugs. We tried
fi%c. The sei/ures were dailN and weren't under control. It
was usuallN when he .Iceps V1'hcn he has one. it wipes
him out for the da,."
Sm.x his diagnosis in June of 1995. "we've gone
through a lot", Mum reports.
Ds Ian's halancc has gotten worse. his speech is slurred
and it 'takes a while for him to perk up." klr, Carr saNs.
"He s on so mart\ drugs. it's hard to tell if it's the drugs or
the disease.".
DN Lans poor balance necessitates he have assistance
walking. He drools and has to wear a hockey helmet to
protect his head.
"He's a ycn independent fella. He gets up and keeps
going." Mrs. Carr says.
But. Dylan's balance will continue to worsen to the
point he won't he able to walk. Although his eyesight's
"OK" now, he'll eventually lose sight.
And, while the tot will one day lose his intellect, he's
now "intelligent", beams Mum. "He's sort of a little Rain
\tan (like the lead character in the moyic about an autistic
sa-vant played by Dustin Hoffman). He knows his upper
and lower case letter`. and his colors. He has a great sense
othunwr. He likes to he read to. He could do that all day."
V1hen his intellect. his sight and his balance are ,one.
"Vb'e 11 try to be as positive as we could be. There's no mir-
acle cure until they find the gene."
But, children with Batten's often succumb to a sec-
ondan disease. such as pneumonia because their bodies
can't take it anymore. Mrs. Carr says.
For the time being. " V1c try to treat him as normal. He
has his chores, like 4-tting the table."
In fact. until Dylan was three. "he could do anything."
Mr. Carr recalls.
Dylan still goes to nursery school and is involved in
TRACK. in organization that helps disabled children ride
horses.
He's on the Ketogenic Diet. deycloped by Johns Hop-
kins L'ni%crsit', for uncontrolled epilepsy.
,\Irs. Carr notes "N) per cent of children on the diet
within two years are drug -tree. scvure-tree. %.lam
decrease their drug use."
.%Ir. Carr says, '"Ihey don't know why it works. just that
it dins."
The diet is "-it) scnsi-
tive, a hit of a cookie
could throw him olf'."
.\Irs. Carr adds. The fami-
h has been " trying to find
out when he'll regress and
lose function," Dad
reports. 'They couldn't tell
LIN because every child

Municipal Board considers changes to makeup and size of Oshawa council
City didn't go far enough in its downsizing
efforts.
"Council had a golden opportunity to reduce
its size to seven," Mr. Lauer said. "Across the
province there's a definite swing toward down-
sizing and I think the city can be well served
with a smaller council"
Mr. Lauer also said having one councillor
from Ward 7 "is grossly unfair. It doesn't come
to reflect representation by population."
The OMB can approve council's decision or
implement its own ruling on Oshawa's political
makeup.
Mayor Nancy Diamond urged the Board to
have regional councillors elected at large,
instead of through a ward system.

I am often asked who the greatest 2oalle I eser saw play the game. Although
I only played one game in the NHL. I was at every training camp of the Bit
Six (the original six teams). So. I practiced with all the greats - Plante. Bower. :K'
Lumley. Esposito - and played in exhibition games against Cheevers. Parent, Dryden.
The bottom line - none stood taller than Terry Sawchuk. As far as I'm concerned, Terry Sawchuk was the topper.
If you don't believe me, listen to the incredible stats he racked up.
Games plaved. 971: shutouts, 103: career goals against average was 2.52. That last stat is amazing since towards
the end of his career, he played for some pretty stiff teams like the N.Y. Rangers and
the L.A. Kings.
Terry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and got his first set of goalie equipment when
his brother got sick and he was talked into wearing his brother's gear. He played two
years in Omaha because very few rookies just walked into the league at that time.
Players were taught their skills in the minors.
He got his break when he was called up to replace Hall of Famer Harry Lumley. All
he did was lead the league in shutouts with 1 I and win Rookie of the Year honors - ho
hum! This guy was a player.
His Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup three of the next four years. In the 1952
playoffs, he was truly unbelievable. Detroit swept the semis and the Cup finals with
Terry tallying four shutouts giving up only five goals in eight games. He earned the
Vezina Trophy in 1952, 1953 and 1955.
Read next week to see how things changed after that.

Personal Prayer To The Blessed Virgin
Prayer to the Blessed Virgin (never known to
fail). All most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel,
fruitful wine, splendour of heaven, Blessed
Mother of the Son of God, immaculate Virgin,
assist me in my necessity Oh Star of the sea,
help me and show me here, you are my mother.
Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God. Queen of
Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from
the bottom of my heart, to secure me in my
necessity (make request). There are none that
can withstand your power. Oh, Mary,
conceived without sin, pray for us who have
recourse to thee, (3 times) Holy Mary. I place
this cause In your hands. (3 times) Say this
prayer for 3 consecutive days and then you
must publish. It will be granted to you.

since then has generated $100 million In sales.
The company officially launched in Ontano on
November 1. 1996 but John Rock and his Independent
representatives started a pre -launch program of Destiny
throughout Durham Region In mid October.
"ft's unbelievable. Almost everyone we ask the magic
question gives a positive response," says John. "That
question Is simply. 'If we could show you a way you could
have virtually unlimited long distance calling without
having to write a cheque at the end of the month, and an
opportunity to earn substantial extra Income, would that
be of Interest to you or to people you know?'.'
Until now, if you wanted to make a long distance call,
you would initiate the call from home or from the office or
use a phone company calving card. However, when your
bill arrived, you discovered that you paid a substantial
premium for use of your card, usually 40 to 60 cents per
minute, plus a per call hook up charge of an additional 50
cents to a $1.00.
The fad is, many of us just don't like "credit' in any
form. We dont want unwelcome surprises when we get
our bill, nor do we warn unscrupulous strangers looking
over our shoulders and stealing our calling lord number
while we are making calls m public places such as
airports.
If We Could Show
You A Way To Have
Unlimited Long
Distance, Without
Writing A Cheque At
The End Of The
Month
Would That Intelrest
You?
J.W. Rock & Associates
International
Marketing
A growing number of people prefer to pay In advance
for something they know they will be using such as long
distance, thereby avoiding misuse of credit.
The Destiny calling cards are wonderful gift Ideas, great
for students away at college, convenient for salespeople.
reliable for professional drivers on the roads, easy for
ousinesses, large or small and great for those who travel.
They can also be powerful promotional tools for business
and a proven fundraiser for associations and non-profit
groups.
The business opportunity Is a phenomenal one offering
anyone from any walk of life the chance to supplement
their existing income or start a genuine home based
business with potential limited only by your imagination.
Destiny has many people eamng an extra $500 per
month and even $500 and more per day. Here is how the
business works.
You start in Phase 1 by buying one three hour Destiny
card and sales kit for $1000.S. You then personally
sponsor two people. You now qualify for commissions.
Then you help your two representatives sell their two.
When your organization has attained 12 sales, with at
least 4 in each leg, you receive a $1000.S. commission.
When your organization attains 50 sales with at least 17
in each leg, your commission is $500 U.S..
You may now re-enter Phase 1, with a new Destiny
card order. All new sales made by your existing
organization count toward your next 12 and 50. You may
do this over and over again until you are earning the
maximum Phase 1 commission of $500 U.S. per day.
Each destiny card is good for 60 minutes of domestic time
or 60 units of international tune.
Phase 2 starts with a $300 U.S. purchase of five cards
which is deducted from your Phase 1 commission. You
now have the potential of making $2000 U.S. per day.
Phase 3 involves a $1000 U.S. purchase of 16 cards
(deducted from Phase 2 commissions). You now have the
potential of making $7000 U.S. per day.
If you would like to become involved in this exciting
new business contact J.W. Rick and Associates today at
(905)433-0007.
