Pickering had sued Metro to force it to close Brock West, and it was shut down at the end of November. "It's too quick to do it responsibly:' says the mayor. "The timetable is far too aggressive" He believes Queen's Park could go ahead with amalga- mating municipalities within Metro Toronto in 1997, but that any plans for a GTA -wide government and the amalga- mation of munici- palities in the 905 areas should be implemented only in 2000, so that they can be given careful consideration and done properly. For the time being, says Mayor Arthurs, the WAYNE Province could public transit. He notes he spoke with Community and Social Services Minister and Durham West MPP Janet Ecker Thursday morning about the article. None of the reports on reforming municipal government in the GTA, including the Golden Report and the Crombie Who Does What panel, sug- gest the regions around Metro be merged into single cities, he notes. The Community Safety Act, legislation that will allow police to notify residents when high-risk offenders are released back into the community, is such an example. The Act, which amends thrix pieces of existing legislation, will give chiefs of police the discretion to warn the community when a convicted offender moves in next door. It's consistent with the recommendations of a 1993 inquest jury examining the tragedy of Christopher Stephenson. an I l -year-old Brampton boy murdered by a repeat child rapist. Tin Community Safety .Act doers not come without contro- versy. There is a school of thought that argues convicts. having paid their debt to society by serving their sentence, deserve a chance at rehabilitation and an opportunity to live peacefully within a community. Unfortunately, vigilantism is alive and well: any high-risk offender whose name and face appears in a community newspa- per is going to have a hard time walking the streets in peace, even though he or she may never lift a finger against another human being again. Any compassion we may feel for the beleaguered and embar- rassed convict, however, cannot outweigh society's responsibili- ty for what happened to Christopher Stephenson. Convicts are beina released back into the community, and many do commit cremes again. The Community Safety Act will go a little further toward ensunng another child does not rricet the same fate. Four times within the current police chief's tenure, Durham Regional Police have taken the necessan, steps to release the names and photos of high-risk offerxkrs in the commuruty. As I was uncertain as to how long I could live in my present home, I purchased other acreage in the northeast Pickering area. It's not like the Region had a whole lot of choice, given that each municipality will eventually have to take part. It took lour hours before the decision was reached, but that's government. Workfare opponents critiriied Durham for taking part in the program, but a few did praise regional councillor, for the process they used to reach their decision. The Community Safety Act, intro- duced by Solicitor General Bob Runciman, will close legal loopholes to allow justice officials to track convicted offenders and will give police authonza- tion to release the names and personal information of criminals deemed a danger to the community. Bantam Raiders have tough time in Beantown The Ajax -Pickering Raiders minor bantam 'AAA' rep hockey team posted a Ione win against three losses at a tournament in Boston last weekend. The Raiders dropped a close 2-1 decision to Lowell, Massachusetts in the opener. Mike Mitchell scored the lone Ajax -Pickering goal, assisted by Mike Moorcroft. Matt McMullen turned aside 19 shots on net. In the second game, Springfield, Massachusetts defeated the Raiders 3-1. Brandon McMillan connected for the Ione goal, assisted by Mitchell and Allan MacIsaac. Brett Lemmon had a strong showing in the Ajax -Pickering net, making 35 saves. The sole Ajax -Pickering win came against Long Island 3-2. Shawn Cooper, Mitchell and Matt Pett scored, with assists to McMillan, Bryce Holdgate, Jamie Follett and Roy MacLeod. Eight of the top junior boys' high school basketball teams in the Toronto area will take to the court for the two- day event hosted by Pine Ridge Secondary School Friday and Saturday. Teams competing are host Pine Ridge Pumas, and Dunbarton High School Spartans from Pickering; Archbishop Denis O'Connor Catholic Secondary School Chargers and Exeter High School Falcons from Ajax; the G.L. Roberts Lakers from Oshawa; Stephen Leacock Lions and the Churchill Collegiate Bulldogs from Scarborough; and Westwood Secondary from Peel Region. Pine Ridge junior coach Jody Hirschfeld says the tournament will feature the cream of the basketball crop in the junior category. "Definitely, the top teams in Toronto are here. Dunbarton, Leacock. Churchill, Pine Ridge and Westwood are among the top five or six teams around.- says Hirschfeld. The tournament, says Hirschfeld, should give the Durham Region teams an early -season taste of some of the best basketball programs in Scarborough as well as from Westwood which won the tourney championship title last season. "Definitely, it gives everyone the chance to see some high-calibre ball. Traditionally, the teams from Scarborough are strong, so it's defi- nitely a good test."
