AJAX-PICKERIN'G — Though GO
Transit plans to operate a regular schedule
during the Metro Days of Action, several
thousand passengers from Ajax and Picker-
ing should be prepared for the worst.
GO Transit promises "to do our best to
provide normal service;' according to infor-
mation officer Bev Simpson. "Our unions
have assured us its members won't be walk-
ing out" Friday. when labor and social
groups set up pickets throughout Metropoli-
tan Toronto to protest provincial government
spending cuts.
Still, traffic congestion in the downtown
core could hinder bus drivers. As well. "road
closures, blocked rail lines and picketing
activity could result in delays;' Ms. Simpson
notes. " NVc are telling passengers to he pre-
pared for that. But GO Transit is going to do
its utmost to keep things going."

he said. because new information
uncovered in recent years about a
fault line running under the station
suggests a serious quake is much
more likely than onginally thought
when it watt built.
-It is important to the people here
in Pickering to determine. do you
want to know or do vow not want to
know?" said Mr. Wallach. "Just hav-
ing a fault is not a problem. But if the
fault is active and it's a big fault there
is a problem:'
Mr. Wallach uncovered the new
earthquake evidence, along with
seismologist and University of
Toronto associate professor Arsalan
Mohajer and marine geoscientist
Richard Thomas, both of whom also
attended the meeting. They maintain
the additional research must be done
to determine whether the fault under
Pickering is active and whether it has
shifted in recent geological time

Some bus drivers have been encouraging
passengers to find a different way of getting

the answer is yes, they believe,
there is a serious danger of a
major quake here which could
damage the nuclear station and
endanger the public.
Mr. Wallach said their
research has already uncovered
evidence which is "strongly
suggestive" that the fault is
active.
"These are not wild and dan-
gerous speculations," Mr. Wal-
lach told councillors, noting
unexpected earthquakes have
occurred in other areas with no
history of them, such as the
quake in the Saguenay region of
Quebec in 1988.
He and his colleagues are
concerned earthquake research
being done for the Pickering
station by Ontario Hydro and
the Atomic Energy Control
Board is relying on historical
data — which are limited and
show little evidence of earth-
quake activity here — to assess
the risk.
Mr. Wallach and Mr. Nloha-

felt their concerns had been
brushed off by councillors.

establish the existence of a seri-

showed no such evidence, that
would be a "good sign" but Mr.
Wallach would recommend
additional seismic monitoring
for two years at a cost of about
$600,000 to establish the fault is
not shifting and the area is quite
safe from earthquakes.
The AECB has hired a U.S.

needed has not been conducted.

Striking GM workers
optimistic deal is near
BY BRIAN LEGREE
Dt'Rif A. s,rAf
DURHAM -- Striking General Motors' workers are
optimistic they'll be back on the job soon.
About 26,000 workers across Canada, now in the third
week of their strike against the auto giant, say they're
buoyed by the news GM and Canadian Auto Workers'
negotiators are working toward a Monday noon deadline to
reach a deal in the walkout.
"We all want to get back to work.
There's light at the end of the tunnel,
they've both had a bend:" says Paul
Omelon, while manning the picket line
at Gate 7 of the fabrication plant Fri-
day.
CAW president Buzz Hargrove and
GM negotiator Dean Munger were
scheduled to hold talks over the week-
end (after This Week's deadline) to
resolve outstanding issues in the dis-
pute, especially outsourcing.
Don Whalen. Local 222 CAW plant
chair, was hopeful entering the week-
end's talks that a deal can be reached.
"We'll do everything we can to get
an agreement. but it takes two sides to
bargain:' says Mr. Whalen.
The CAW has booked the Civic
Auditorium for Wednesday in antici-
pation of a ratification vote, should
this round of negotiations lead to a
deal.
Some workers suggested that while
the union may win the battle in this
round of bargaining over outsourcing,
GM may ultimately win the war.
*1 think the writing is on the wall,
this plant will eventually be history;'
says Mr. Omelon, who has worked at
GM for two decades. "We're just try-
ing to slow the process down:'
The company, which has
announced it intends to sell the
Oshawa fab plant and Windsor trim
plant, says it needs to concentrate
more on its core activities to ensure its
competitiveness.
A rallying point for CAW members
was the announcement earlier this
week that GM made a profit of $1.3
billion in its worldwide operations
during the third-quarter of this }ear.
-They make money off us and
won't give us anything back in return;'
says Rub Essex, a 20 -year veteran of
GM. "They want to do away with
3,500 jobs. Their bread and butter is
the employees"
Meanwhile, delegates to a special
CAW convention endorsed a plan Fri-
day to double union dues for its
215,000 members to $4.40 per hour
for the duration of the walkout to
boost the strike fund, says Mr.
Whalen.
"Hopefully it doesn't have to be
used, if we can get a contract," he says.

Laying the foundation
The rumor -mill is working overtime in these dying
days of the Crombie Commission.
No doubt the rumors that have surfaced regarding
the reorganization of education reform are causing
some sleepless nights for school trustees and adminis-
trators. In particular, possible plans to eliminate local
school boards and replace them with regional boards
with far fewer trustees and administrators, should have
those entrenched in the current system particularly
worried.
But for the rest of us, a pian similar to the one the
Crombie Commission appears to favor might not be a
bad thing at all.
The Tor% -appointed commission is headed by for-
mer Toronto Mayor David Crombie. He has been
asked to look at the way services are delivered in
Ontario and recommend ways of delivering those ser-
vices more efficiently.
Cutting: the bureaucracy and putting more money
into the education of students is all people want.
First and foremost, the replacement of Ontario's 168
school boards with five regional boards would allow
for savings of about $1 billion annually — potentially
without affecting the classroom. These boards have to
be sensitive to the needs of every community. not just
the major centres because education concerns in inner
cities are sometimes not the same as rural matters.
Amalgamating separate, French language and public
schools into a single administration also makes more
sense than allowing these parallel education systems to
continue to demand tax dollars for identical services
such as supplies.
This needs to be done in a delicate manner to ensure
parents can get answers to their local questions.
And plans to take such powers as the construction
of new schools away from school boards and give
them to local councils also makes a great deal of
sense; after all, it's local councils that approve new res-
idential development, and it is — or should be — pop-
ulation increases that dictate the construction of new
schools.
Education reform is needed and Crombie appears to
be laying a solid foundation.

♦ "I'm calling regarding the boot toll held to raise money for
the hospital. I agree totally with the writer who wrote in and
said that she's against that voluntary toll. It's not a voluntary
toll; it's coercion. I don't think it should be done. There are
better ways to raise money, rather than forcing people to wait
in line and then have to pay a fee to exit a plaza on a busy

To the editor:
Three interesting responses in your
"You said it... -column of Oct. 13 deal-
ing with the Hams government's cut-
ting of 27 hIPPs.
The first reader thinks this will
destroy democracy, give the rich a tax
break, and give everyone in the
province less say. (You mean we have
lots to say now!)
To this borderline Communist read-
er, I can only suggest you take a good
look at any socialist government in the
world, and if you can find one with
more to offer than the province of
Ontario or anywhere else in Canada,
I'm sure I can find a few rich people to
chip in and buy you a one-way ticket.
While I'm no fan of some policies
Janet Ecker supports, (policies which
can and will with 100 -per cent certain-
ty cost people their lives in this
province), cut the lady some slack.
She's a rookie MPP in a difficult and
complex ministry, and I doubt this
reader would last a week doing her
job.
The third reader, it seems, is not a
fan of right-wing editorials, and would
like to know who writes these "pieces
of trash".
Every newspaper I've ever read has
their own political slant covering every
position of the political spectrum, the
News Advertiser being no exception.
Why doesn't this reader put their com-
ments in a letter to the editor and
enlighten us as to his or her version of
the way life should be in the Province
of Ontario? Unless, of course, he or
she's taking a plane ride with reader
number one.

Money saved by
downsizing
shouldn't ro to
physicians
To the editor:
An open letter to Janet Ecker,
Durham West NIPP:
As a nurse trying to establish
an independent practice in
Ontario, I am writing to express
great concern that money saved
through hospital downsizing and
intended for the community sector
will be redirected to physicians.
If community services are
under -funded at the same time as
cutbacks are made to acute care,
the quality of care available to
Ontarians will suffer dramatically.
Patients discharged earlier, who
are unable to access appropriate
community care, will more likely
suffer complications and hospital
re -admissions.
This revolving -door style of
care is too expensive in financial
and, more critically, in human
terms.
In addition, I disagree that
money should be taken from
providers who are more actively
engaged in health promotion and
illness prevention in order to
increase the incomes of physi-
cians.
Janet, both you and the health
minister have promised the citi-
zens of Ontario hospital restruc-
turing will be safely and responsi-
bly carried out. I urge you to
uphold your commitment by
ensuring adequate funds are avail-
able for needed community ser-
vices.

If I had a nickel for every time fam-

No more renting for us, the signifi-

No more living beside the seniorcit-

entertainment, outside the bottle, was
bouncing each other oft' the wall.
When they weren't stabbing one anoth-

No more living under the guy who
we swear uses his apartment as an auto
body repair shop on weekends.
Beginning at about 11:07 p.m. every
Friday. Or else he has an obsessive-
compulsive disorder that requires him
to rearrange his furniture every week-
end.
No more sleeping on the balcony to
escape the heat of our apartment on a
steamy summer night. Only to be kept
awake by the next-d(x)r neightx)rs mak-
ing splashing sounds as they plunge
into the; swimming pool that we can sec
from our second -floor sweat suite.
We're taking the plunge into holne
ownership. t
And what a beauty of a home it is. It
comes complete with the significant
other's parents, a large yard that her
mom can mow and a big two -car drive-
way her dad can shovel as we're curling
up in front of the fireplace.
There's a family room where we can
start making a family and a living room
where the outlaws can babysit. i
The spacious roe room will provide
me a perfect retreat to escape from her
parental units' heated Hungarian argu-
ments, er discussions. And, they won't
be able to detect the odor of my smok-
ing when they have a pot of goulash on
the go upstairs.
The basement workshop will give
her dad a place to tinker with his tools,
which he likes to do a lot. It's a guy
thing that I've never understood. If we
get homesick about our current place,
we can always make the workshop
available to the obsessive-compulsive
mechanic -mover.
Oh yeah, the !rouse also comes with
a mortgage that should be paid off
about a week before we're at morgue

We take possession in December,

time to close.
But, there's never been a better time

A SUMV I kit for stri*kers
or anyone else struggling to cope with emotional and financial stress
BY JACQUIE MCINNES
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER
a, hoping, coping.
Q day it looks bad, the next it's promising, but
until a deal is ratified
that's what every family
that depends on the wages usually provided by GM or one
of its suppliers is forced to do. For those whose future rests
on the final outsourcing deal, the stress level is that much
higher.
"It can be very traumatic for the whole family," admits
Kinark Family and Child Services psychologist, Dr. Larry
Danilewitz.
"This is not one person's stress. This is a family's
stress," he says.
"It's a time for the family to maintain and strengthen its
support networks;" suggests Dr. Danilewitz. "Don't isolate
yourself." Church, friends, extended family and relatives
can all be invaluable support resources, he says.
Of course, one of the main causes of stress during a
strike is the financial burden it creates.
Developing a financial plan that accommodates the new
realities of the family income will go a long way to allevi-
ate that pressure, suggests Sandra Sherk of the Credit
Counselling Service of Durham Region.
"They have to review their financial posi-
tion," she says.
•'Thev mutt detorminP their
tizing; deciding what can wait and what can't, says Mrs.
Sherk. If it means some of the creditors are going to have
to wait for some or all of their money, it's best that you tell
them first before they come looking for you.
"They may work with you if they know what's happen-
ing, but if you just ignore them, there's going to be prob-
lems;" says Mrs. Sherk.
Her recommendation is to call or make an appointment
with creditors to explain your situation, make arrange-
ments for delayed or partial payments, and get the name of
the person you talk to.
"Every creditor is different in what they'll agree to" she
admits, but "usually they are receptive when a person goes
to them instead of them having to chase them down"
A time like the strike will be most difficult for families
who were already stretched to the limit or falling behind,
notes Mrs. Sherk.
For these families, additional credit counselling through
the CCSDR, which is a non- profit United Way organiza-
tion, may be of benefit. The CAW will be working closely
with the credit counselling service and plans to hold a sem-
inar, tentatively set for Oct. 22, should the strike continue.
says union spokesperson, Dave
Broadbent.
"It's OK to
feed your family:"
reminds Mrs.
Sherk, who says
there are certain
expenses that are
unavoidable and
KE people should not
feel guilty about
putting them
first.
While food is one
expense you cannot avoid, it is one
you might be able to lower, depend-
ing on your current shopping habits.
says nutritionist Diane Elliott.
.,Stick to the outer walls of the
grocery store as much as possible:'
she recommends. That's where
you'll find staples like fruits, veg-
etables, dairy products and meat.
"Venture into the centre aisles
with caution;" she adds. One
exception is pasta which makes
a nutritious, inexpensive meal
Whether combined with a home-
made sauce or even a jar or can of
tomato -based sauce.

Nutritionist Diane Elliott offers
these tips for in- expensive, nutri-
tious meals:
• Hot cereal is a better buy than
cold. The plainer the cold cereal
the better the value. Add your own
raisins, nuts or fruit if desired.
• Milk in bags is less expensive
than cartons and milk will freeze.
Powdered skim milk is the least
expensive but, is not recommend-
ed for children under age two.
• No -name brands offer excel-
lent value.
The most expensive brands are
stocked at eye level so look high
and look low, checking for the unit
price when possible.
• Substitute meat with eggs,
dried beans, lentils, peas or even

uct, the more you're going to pay," offers Mrs. Elliott. (For
more shopping tips, see sidebar.)
Taking charge of your finances, your spending and any
other part of your life you still have control over, whether
it's your garden or home projects, is the ideal way to reduce
stress, says Dr. Danilewitz.
When the family is thrown into a strike, it is inevitable
that the household will feel some pressure, he says.
The trick, he suggests, is to deal with it effectively by
taking control and
resisting the tempta-
tion to "awfulIZe", It, s a time

problem areas of your
life.
"Try to keep regu-
lar routines, or else
the children will react to the stress;' he adds.
The pile-up of stress can result in temper flare-ups, so
Dr. Danilewitz says it's important to monitor and control
the level of anger in the home. "Try to conserve one's cop-
ing resources by not entering into unnecessary conflicts;'
he suggests.
For most families, this is a trying time that will be over-
come, but just as those already dealing with too many hills
will find this time the most financially trying, those coping
with large amounts of stress before the strike will find it
most difficult, emotionally.
"For a certain percentage of families, the pile-up of
stress may be intense enough that they may need to seek
professional guidance;' says Dr. Danilewitz.
For the rest, it's a time to stay positive and active, know-

Pickering's historic Cook House razed
BY MARIANNE TAKACS
T -FF RITORTER _
PiCKERING -- Another of Pickering's histori-
cal buildings met an unhappy fate last week with
the demolition of the Cook house on Liverpool
Road south of Old Orchard Avenue.
The building was estimated to he about 140
years old and was most recently the home of two
of Pickering's most community -minded citizens.
Harry and Monica Cook. The property where it
was situated is to become a 27 -home subdivision.
An independent architectural evaluation o1' the
house commissioned by Heritage Pickering. an
advisory committee to Town Council, had
deemed it worth preserving as "an authentic cap-
sule history of the settlement of Pickering as well
as a fine example of domestic Gothic Rcviva)
style, with an unusual number of original features
intact." The evaluation also noted that if the build-
ing was "simply razed for a roadway the commu-
nity will have lost an important visible link to the
Past".
Heritage Pickering decided it was impractical
to preserve the building where it was. Newspaper
ads placed by the developer at the request of the
heritage committee offering to sell the house for
$ I to anvonc wanting to relocate or salvage it
failed to attract an appropriate buyer. The Town
then agreed to allow the house to he demolished
on the condition that a cultural heritage resource
assessment of the site was done to find and pre-
serve any important historical artifacts which
might be found. As well, a plaque will he placed
on the site conrnrcmorating the community work
.A Monica Cook.
The assessment condition was included at the
request of'I'om Muhr. an area resident, director of
the Pickering Museum Village Advisory Board
and an executive member of the Pickering East
Shore Cnmmunity Association.
Ters-mally. I would ha%c liked to sec some-
thing done with the l u ,,:.' s.n s Mr M(ihr. "I
think the Town has got an exemplary policy on
supporting the museum but i don't think it's pay-
ing enough attention to the older homes that
reflect the history of this town."
He notes, however. that it's not only the politi-
cians who are to blame.
"Any kind of heritage preservation requires
money nobody is willing to spend. People want a
zero increase in the mill rate. The funds aren't out
there and the public will isn't out there. if the pub-
lic will was out there the funds would material-
ize."
A few months ago. Council approved the
demolition of another historic building, the
Camphell-McPherson House which used to sit in
Lynn Heights Park near Dixie Read and Finch
Avenue. The run-down mid -19th -century stone
farmhouse was removed after area residents com-
plained about vandalism at its site. Materials from
the house were salvaged and are it) be used to
reconstruct it as a private home in Claremont in
what Mr. Mohr describes as "a great compro-
mise". But he notes the Town made a mistake in
the first place by not providing properly for the
preservation of Camphell-McPherson House
when councillors approved a residential develop-
ment around it.
"Both these houses are examples of the lack of
a comprehensive cultural heritage management
plan," says Mr. Mohr. "This is something that is
still not being addressed in the new draft Official
Plan. An awareness of heritage is important in this
town because it's something that could change
Pickering from a bedroom cornrnunity to a town
with some pride."
Mr. Mohr and local historian John Sahean are
investigating the possibility of establishing a his-
torical society in Pickering to work fur the pro-
tection of the town'. heritage. It would be inde-
pendent of gw ernrnent. Arry„ne interested in
helping with the initiati%c m:is rhonc Mr. Mohr at
839-1221.
People were allowed to strip the outside Monica Cook house for their own personal
boarding and decorative trim off the historic use before it was demolished last week.

PICKERING — The Pickering

and robbed by the Redmen in
recent league action.
The Panthers fell behind 2-0
early in a game against the
Richmond Hill Jaguars and ended
up losing 5-3. Pickering goal get-

McEachen. Adding assists were
Brandon Gifford with two, Jamie

After opening up a 1-0 lead on
the first shift of the game against
the Newmarket Redmen, the
Panthers ran out of gas in the sec-

lead. The Redmen added two
more unanswered markers in the
final frame for a 4-1 victory.
Peter Watkins, a call-up from

Apprentice mechanic Andrew Midgeham and owner mechanic Bruce Howell
repair a car.
Howell's Service Centre may

Bruce Howell had been located
at the Petro Canada station at

Pickering for the past nine vears.
During that time he's attracted
customers from all over the Ajax -
Pickering area and wants to
express his gratitude and thanks
for their loyal patronage during
that time.
But two weeks ago he moved to
998 Dillingham Rd., only a few
minutes away as a tenant in the
buildino, owned by starter and
alternator specialists McLean
Rushley .-automotive.
Bruce's large well equipped
shop is where customers trust this
experienced mechanic, who has
been working on cars for more
than 25 ears.
He docs a wide array of g*eneral
repairs including tune ups, brakes
and an all important service for
this time of year --winterizing
your car.
Bruce and apprentice mechanic

"If you're cooling system hasn't
been flushed and the coolant has
broken down you could

something you want to happen in
the middle of winter."
Having a tune up done is also
important preventative
maintenance before the cold
weather arrives.
"A tune up w ill prevent your car
from stalling. and will increase
your -as mileage," says Bruce.
-You should also have your tires
examined to see if they have
sufficient tread to 2iye you proper
traction in the ice and snow."
Bruce sells any make of tire
you need and says they're all top
quality, just the same as all of the
parts he puts into his customers
cars.
If you can't wait while your
car's being tired, and need a ride
to work or home and back. Bruce
offers a free shuttle service.
"I want to let my customers

Gardiner's Duct Cleaning tackles
dust to make breathing easier

The truck mounted unit is excellent for cleaning ducts in commercial,
residential and industrial properties. The FALL SALE includes a hook-up
for $39.95 plus $5 per vent (minimum 12 vents) and a chimney sweeping
service for $49.95.
Dust can be more than just an annoyance if you
don't do something about it.
Not only can it be a constant source of work come
cleaning time, but it can also irritate your eyes,
throat and Cause breathing problems. That's why
more and more residential, industrial and
commercial customers are calling Gardiner's Duct
Cleaning to tackle this problem head on.
Sam and his son Scott have been
cleaning, heating and air conditioning
ducts for over five years and they
advise anyone who has not had
them cleaned for a long time to
get it done as soon as possible.
It's a procedure that takes very
little time compared to the
amount of time you'll enjoy dean
dust -free air in your home and it
is further beneficial in that it
reduces heating and cooling costs.
The large truckmounted, 18HP
vacuum unit shown in the photo above,
packs more power for those tough jobs they
encounter.
The procedure for both is simple. Sam first doses
off your vents and makes an opening in the main
duct. Then, while the vacuum unit sucks air into a
holding chamber, a hose is put into the upstairs
vents, one at a time, and blows the dust and dirt into
the downstairs unit.
They also use the air snake method which
ensures ducts are completely rid of dust and debris.
The air snake method consists of a device being
inserted into the ductwork while a mobile head
reaches into every inch of duct work to dislodge dust
and debris.
"Dust will not only affect your health but ruin
%miture and draperies," says Sam. "Having
your ducts cleaned cuts down on cleaning and
adds life to your furniture, carpets and
drapes."
Sam also provides chimney sweeping at
competitive prices with service that is always
friendly and courteous. Caps and
screens are available to keep
out unwanted pets.
Presently, Gardiner's
PAY Duct Cleaning is offering
a FALL SPECIAL
HE featuring a hook-up for
$39.95 plus $5 per vent
ST and a chimney
sweeping for $49.95.
There is also 2 new
15/9960 services available: (1)
Dryer -Duct cleaning with
the purchase of duct
cleaning for only $20. and (2)
brick and stone fireplaces cleaned.
