DURHAM — On the opening Jav of an inquiry prob-
ing his wrongful murder conviction, Guy Paul Morin
expressed optimism Durham police and prosecutors will
"learn by their mistakes:'
But as the Commission of Inquiry headed by Mr. Jus-
tice Fred Kaufman began preliminary proceedings
Wednesday in Toronto, lawyers for the Durham Regional
Police Service, and the detectives and prosecutors
involved in the case of murdered nine-year-old Christine
Jes_sop, expressed fear the inquiry was turning into "a teal.
"it sounded to me like this was the beginning of
attempts to turn this proceedings into adversarial proceed-
ings. One thing a Royal Commission is not, it is not a
trial," Robert Armstrong, legal representative for
Durham's chief Crown attorney John Scott, told Mr. Jus-
tice Kaufman.
High-profile criminal lawyer Edward Greenspan, hired
to represent retired Durham detective John Sheppard —
one of two lead investigators in the murder — said he is
"very, very concerned about what is going to happen in
this room" to his client under cross-examination.
Mr. Greenspan said the inquiry could jeopardize a civil
suit filed by the Morins against the Durham force, in
which Mr. Sheppard and eight other officers are alleged to

convict Mr. Morin.
Mr. Greenspan threatened
Mr. Sheppard would not fully
participate in the inquiry
unless the Province footed the
legal bills. Speaking to
reporters during a break, he
even hinted he may seek to
halt the inquiry legally.
"It may well be it turns out
that (Mr. Sheppard) made an
error...It may well be a human
error and not one made with
malice:' Mr. Greenspan said
of his client.
The conduct of as many as
60 Durham police officers
involved to varying extents in
the investigation will come
under the microscope.
The 10 -phase inquiry will
examine police handling of -
.the investigation into the mur-
der, the Crown's prosecution
of Mr. Morin and the Centre
of Forensic Sciences' han-
dling of evidence.
A relaxed -looking Mr.
Morin called the start of the
long-awaited inquiry "a good
day for all.
"We will see what happens
with the process and how it
unfolds. If the truth comes
out, hopefully some individu-
als will become accountable
and maybe learn by their mis-
takes so there aren't other Guy
Paul Morins in the future," he
told the News Advertiser after
the proceedings.
After serving two years in
jail and standing trial twice,
Mr. Morin's 10 -year ordeal
finally ended last year when
he was cleaned in the murder
by DNA evidence. Christine
disappeared from her York

found raped and stabbed to
death in Sunderland.

On the day she was murdered, Miss Yarmola,
who lived with her grandparents, helped Mr.
Nugent move some of his belongings to a trailer
he was living in at Darlington Provincial
Park in Bowmanville, reads an agreed
statement of facts entered into court.
She described Mr. Nugent to her grand-
mother as "a lonely old man who needed
someone to talk to;' states the brief.
Tile pair met later that night for drinks,
eventually driving to the Eastside Motel at
33(X) Kingston Rd. where they booked a
room under the name Mr. and Mrs. Arnold
Nugent.
When Miss Yarmola passed out, Mr.
Nugent removed her pants and sexually
assaulted her with a "thin metal instru-
ment:' which an autopsy determined
pierced her bladder causing her to bleed to
death, the brief states.
Calling it a "cowardly, despicable
crime;' Crown attorney Paul Amenta said
Miss Yarmola was "a vulnerable victim, a
woman willing to help and who was taken
advantage of.
"He left her to die in that motel room a
very agonizing death;' he said.
Mr. Nugent would eventually call 911
just atter midnight to report he had "a dead

Tliesday clinic
AJAX -PICKS -RING — Antonius
VanBoxtel doesn't know how many
lives he's saved.
The long-time Ajax resident does
know he'll donate his 100th unit of
blood at a clinic at St. Bernadette's
Church Tuesday.
"I like to give blood to help people.
I feel it's good for your system to get
new blood," says Mr. VanBoxtel, 69.
lie donated the gift of life for the
fust time in the mid-1960s while
working at Whitby Psychiatric llospi-
tal. "They asked for blood donations
because they needed it, so 1 started. I
didn't know I had a rare blood type
(RHO-), but I found out.
"I have a rare type that can be used
on any person, so I've been told by the
nurses (at blood donor clinic`). Very
often, my blood goes to the llospiml
for Sick Children to newborn babies"
He gives blood "as often as I can"
because: 1 could prevent some pcxx
little baby or an adult from dying. So I
feel great"
The worst thing about donating
blood "is a little prick on the finger or
the earlobe •'
The clinic at St. Bernadette's goes
from 1 to 7:30 p.m. when organizers
hope to collect 250 units of blood.
Sandra Tesolin of the Red Cross
Society's Toronto Blood Centre says
all types are needed, especially group
O, because it's the most common and
can be used for most patients in emer-
gency situations.
The Toronto Blood Centre requires
700 donations every day just to meet
its needs. The required level in the
blood bank for the Toronto centre is
1,455 units as it supplies b" to 61
hospitals from Oakville to Napanee
and north to Huntsville.
The centre is hovering around its
required total, but "the problem is
there's a daily need for blood and a
daily challenge to get enough blood to
supply hospitals with what they need,,'
Ms. Tesolin says.
If the supply gets too low, the blood
centre may restrict the amount going
to hospitals or bring blood in frons
other areas, she reports.
In a serious accident, one person
could use up to 100 units.
Each unit is divided into four com-
ponents — red cells, plasma, platelets
and cryoprecipitate (used to treat
hemophiliacs) — so up to four people
can be treated with each donation.
Anyone between 17 and 70 and in
good health can give bk)od. All donor's
are required to provide identification
with their signature or a photograph.
You can give blood up to six times
a year but you must wait 56 days
between donations.
St. Bernadette's is at the corner of
Harwood Avenue and Bayly Street in
Ajax.
Call the Red Cross Society's Ajax -
Pickering office at 420-3383 for more

A little compassion really does go a long way.
In a local sense, the compassion reaches from
rWht here in Durham Region all the way to
Canada's rugged east coast at Labrador's Davis
Inlet.
It's there, you may recall, where Canadians
were shocked in recent years to learn of an isolat-
ed Innu community where the inhabitants lived in
squalid conditions and children were dying from
the effects of inhaling gasoline.
In 1993, efforts began in Durham to reach into
this faraway community to ease the pain of Innu
living there. Today, the efforts continue, culminat-
ing this year in a tour of unique and attractive
homes around the region -- including stops in Ajax
and Pickering -- to help raise money for the needy,
Innu.
Proceeds from the Sept. 14 event will be sent
east, with the thoughts and prayers of all of us
u ho live such a different existence here in the
heart of Ontario.
The contrast and irony is hard to miss:
Exquisitely designed homes are being presented so
interested participants can appreciate and note the
architecture and landscape of particularly pretty
homes in the region. The money raised from this
tour of beautiful places will go to help a commu-
nity of people living in polar opposite circum-
stances.
We hope that irony isn't lost on those who turn
out for the tour. We hope a substantial amount is
raised so this effort in our little corner of the
world can help others who struggle in theirs. We
hope the Innu of Davis Inlet can find the hope and
motivation to make their lives better.
We hope we never forget our place in life. Or
theirs.

'Beautiful' Verona
Mall but a dream
To the editor:
I recently had a dream. I was sitting
in the middle of the Verona Mall eyesore
(no, really, it was a dream, not a night-
mare) surrounded by beautiful lush vege-
tation which completely covered the rot-
ting cement structures. I soon realized 1
was in a sanctuary where sick and aban-
doned animals were being cared for by
loving staff and a host of volunteers, all
dedicated to their care and well-being.
Several children were feeding baby
animals and spoke tenderly to their little
charges, comforting the sick and loving
the abandoned. I knew in my heart that
these children would grow up to become
caring, responsible adults who would
help make this planet a more peaceful
place in which to live.
Meanwhile, visitors kept arriving to,
see Ajax's new attraction and vowed to
return again and again to enjoy our beau-
tiful sanctuary. They all proclaimed "it's
worth the drive to Ajax". Then, sudden-
ly, everything vanished and before me
loomed the ugly ruins of Verona Mall.
I wondered. Had I really been dream-
ing, or was this wishful thinking on my
part that someday, soon, something
beautiful would arise from the Ghost of
Verona Mall?

Mr. Genco believes it is just specu-

be touched because of the l:'OA, and
that they'll get just a slap on the wrist.
He goes on to say that stronger punish-
ments will just turn disgruntled
teenagers into even more disgruntled
adults, and that we should try to look
at the real problems beneath the sur-
face.
Mr. Genco, you may indeed he the
Pollyanna of the 1990s. It must be nice
to occasionally take a look at the real
world and not see what is going on.
You obviously agree that if a young
offender broke into your home, mur-
dered your entire family, that they
would only deserve three years in jail.
After all, you wouldn't want the poor
little misunderstood darling to grow
into adulthood and be "disgruntled".
The YOA is the absolute worst piece
of legislation that any government of
any level in Canada has ever enacted.
The YOA must be abolished so those
taking advantage of the system pay
dearly for their actions.

Personal Prayer To The Healy Spirit
Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and
show me the way to reach my ideal. You who
give the divine gift to forgive and forget the
wrong that is done to me and who are in all
instances of my life with me. I, in this short
dialogue, want to thank You for everything and
confirm once more that I never want to be
separated from you no matter how great the
material desire may be. I want to be with You
and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory.
Amen.
Person must pray this 3 consecutive days
without stating one's wish. After the 3rd day
your wish will be granted no matter how difficult
it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as
your favor has been granted.

Why Advertise in Focus on Business
Durham businesses wanting to Increase their profile and sales volume rind
that being part of Focus on business advertising feature definitely has its
advantage. Over the last few years a great many businesses - of all sizes -
have found that investment in the Aiax/Pickering News Advertiser's and
Oshawa/Whitby This Weeks Focus on Business feature have generated
extra plane calls that likely would not have otherwise occurred.
How do you get involved?
When a company make a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the
page, it also receives a full feature story, complete with pictures. The story
reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth its
product and/or service, philosophy, goals, special promotions and even a
historical overview. Unless the business chooses otherwise, everything is
done by the newspaper's staff: the ad design, story interview and writing,
plus the taking of the photographs. All the business needs to do is prepare
for the increased sales volume. For more information call Janice at 683-
0707.

Cheque this out
What could well be the world's largest negotiable cheque amazes Metro East
Trade Centre employee Joan Kench. The cheque is 150 -feet -by -100 -feet and was
made by Ajax Sign and Display at the Pickering trade centre. Ajax Sign owner
Joe Albert, left, says it's made out for $1 million and is a donation by Burger King
in the United States to a college athlete's fund.
