Media must push for MP pension reforms
To the editor:
A recent national poll indicat-

It also revealed. ho%%c%cr, that

I am therclore totally antaied
that your newspaper has not pro-
vided more in-depth coverage of
the courage and leadership
exhibited by our oy\ n MP Dan
McTeaguc.
His campaign clearly stated
that he was committed to an
honest and fair pension plan and
he opposed the current cash grab
h} Lrcedv elected officials.
When his own party reversed
its position and stated there yeas
nothing they could do about this
outrage. Dan McTeague exposed
this I'arce by simply dropping
out. Dan's action will potentially
cost him hundreds of thousands
of dollars in his lifetime.
This clearly demonstrates his
commitment to honesty and
integrity that he promised to
bring to his elected position.
It also demonstrates the
courage and leadership for
which the average Canadian tax-
payer is requesting.
Our media, including the
Ajax - Pickering News
Advertiser, should be clamoring
for all elected officials to follow
this lead. By keeping this matter
in the public's eye, perhaps the
taxpayers will start demanding
that all of- their elected officials
follow this lead.
We can then start achieving
our goal of eliminating waste
and spending tax dollars on
worthwhile and necessary social
programs.

and Stroke Month.
This year, the Durham West chapter is
hoping to collect $105,500, with goals of
$25,000 in Pickering, $31,000 in Ajax and
$49,500 in Whitby.
Funds go to research cures for heart dis-
ease and stroke and to health promotion. In
1995, the Ontario foundation gave S21 mil-
lion to help with research.
About 77,000 Canadians died from heart
disease or stroke in 1992 — 39 per cent of all
deaths. By comparison, the second leading
killer was cancer which accounted for 28 per
cent of Canadian deaths.
Heart disease and strokes cost the Canadi-
an economy about S17 billion a year in direct
and indirect costs, including drug expenses,
hospital and medical can. and lost income.
Ms. Orton says more canvasser are need-
ed for this year's fund-raising campaign.
Canvassers are asked to visit 20 to 25 houses.
