The remaining 90 per cent is picked up by the Province. As municipalities struggle to decide what programs they can afford to offer, Ms. McCuaig fears day care could lose out to such services as garbage collection. While the Province hasn't vet announced child-care cuts, it has can- celled an Early Childh(xxl Education pilot project, has once again made junior kindergarten an optional pro- gram for sLhool boards, and has can- celled the funding of school-based day-care centres. Ms. McCuaig criticized provincial politicians who have suggested work- ing parents who can't afford day care leave their children with neighbors and family members. She suggested quality day care ..can make up for all sorts of prob- lems in the home" and is beneficial to even those children -in the best of homes" because they spend so much time at good day-c:arc centres. But parents "can't make it up" if their child hasn't had a "happy. stim- ulating, safe and loving day," Ms. McCuaig maintained. Ms. Ecker agreed day care is important, not only for children "but for the support it provides the work- ing parent ... It keeps them in the job market." She admitted the government has made cuts in the day-carc field, most notably a conversion program intro- duced under the former New Democ- ratic Party government. It provided financial incentives to private day- care centres which became non-prof- it. Ms. Ecker criticized spending money to drive one sector out of business, saying she supports choices — including non-profit and profit day-care centres, babysitting offered in the home and parents who choose to stay at home. During public question period, a stay-at-home mother -of -five urged MPPs to "ease the tax load on fami- lies so more women could stay at ;home it they wanted." A single mother and apprentice mechanic who earns $8 an hour and pays $40 a month for day care ,expressed concern a rumored voucher system would put the cost of even subsidized day care out of her reach. Ms. Ecker assured her no decision has been made about the voucher sys- tem. In Durham, almost 2,500 parents use subsidized day care and another 600 are on a waiting list, according to John Mitchell of the Region's social services department. Of 130 licensed day-care centres in Durham, 10 are run by the Region, which purchases services from another 90. Understandably, there have to be two sides or perspective any issue and this reality is quite evident to me by reading etters to the editor form Mr. Martin Perrault and Dr. er Sehdev. A person in a car probably would not have taken the time to stop their car, get out and take the hag from the middle of my dri- veway. Whoever you are, 1 hope that you or your parents are enjoying the new emer- gency road kit. When you find yourself in the position of need- ing it, and I hope that you do need it, think about this little story. An older woman is travelling alone, except for a tiny dog. It's late at night, very cold and snowing. She is miles from nowhere. She feels the thump, thump, thump of a flat tire. She pulls off the road, thankful that she still has a tool box. She leaves the engine running and the lights on since her flashlight had been in the bright yellow hag. Unfortunately, the engine dies and the lights go off. Now it's too dark to try to change the tire. There is no longer any road Ilares to indicate a stranded car. They were in the yellow hag also. The snow storm is worsen- ing and the temperature is growing colder. There are no candles and thermal blanket to keep herself and the little dog warm. Maybe, someone will stop, but there is no longer a distress sign for her window. Time goes by. The snow piles higher. Suddenly, there is a ter- rific roar as a semi plows over the snow-covered car. Do not worry. The old woman and the little dog do not hear or feel a thing. They have both frozen to death hours before. I truly thank God that this nightmare did not come true. My mother made it home safe- ly, no thanks to the guilty party. II' you have the courage, please return the hag and its contents. Six pts which settled under a dumpster at an Ajax workplace are being cared for by an Oshawa couple "in the process" of fmding them permanent homes. "We've had approximately 20 calls" from people wishing to foster the kit- tens or provide stable homes for them, says Karen Bradley. She and her husband Patrick have been feed- ing the felines since October, after Mr. Bradley discov- ered them at his workplace. The Bradleys' publicized cam- paign in the News Advertis- er to find homes for the kittens "was really suc- cessful," says Ms. Bradley. "There was a good interest." One phone call was from a woman who recognized one of the older felines in the photo as her lost pet of four years. It's now back home. The other older cat has a dislocated leg, but has been rescued by "a good Samaritan" who donated $350 for the operation. The feline's been spayed and Ms. Bradley is hoping someone who's had experience with older cats will be able to care for her for four to six weeks until her leg heals, or offer a permanent home. "I have a friend who might take her to her barn, so at least she'll have a warm home. If not, we'll take her back (to the outdoor shelter) and continue to feed her." If you're interested in providing foster pre or a permanent home for the older cat, call Ms. Bradley at 905-436-0521. 104 Portraelfsfolkw Only A $4.95 Session Fee s: Orwy d is 95 sess+on k,- Der a0avrk5ed spW-ku WY:Ib"' -t'ww portrays w- 6ww r %,:. -:.r- MW ,'wxnDe..:t advertised cosectrons per tamyy. but aey one advertised cotectna. The Fairness for Durham Kids Campaign is a non-partisan coalition and advocacy group concerned with fairness in funding for services for children and youths with special needs. Durham Region is the second lowest -funded region in the province (behind Peel Region). According to Campaign Co- chair Mort Marder, the Durham group is encouraged by the willingness of the minister to include local groups in consul- tations on allo- cating provincial funding for what are being called "core" services for children and youth. "While he did not make an unequiv- ocal commitment to funding equity, Mr. Tsubouchi did state that across- the-board cuts in funding are not the ideal method," Mr. Marder says. He added, the across-the-board cuts to MCSS-funded services which have been made to date by the Province do not take into consideration the funding inequities in high-growth areas of Ontario, such as Durham Region, where funding for services has lagged far behind population growth. In addition to its advocacy effort% with the Province, the Campaign is liaising with other fairness groups in the Greater Toronto Area to put added pressure on the government regarding the equity issue. In doing so every day they are qualified to treat the simple and problem cases that may arise. Denturists charge less than dentists do for the exact same dentures. Dentists do not make your dentures. They have to send your impressions to a dental laboratory where a technician who has never seen you or knows anything about your problems makes your dentures. Just like an assembly line. This ncreases the dentist's costs and therefore ncreases your costs. The Denturist who treats you makes your dentures. He has the dental aboratory on the premises. He is qualified to do Goth the impressions and laboratory procedures. 71hs is why he can offer you a personalized accurate service for a significantly lower fee. BRIEF HISTORY I 374 the Ontario Government enacted gislation to govern and license the services crovided by Denturists Our profession is still evolving Denturists who were also known as Denture Therapists and are licensed to practice in ,anada, U.S.A.. Denturists must receive a cense approved by the Ontario Government and issued by the College of Denturists. A license is only issued after completion of a demanding 3 year program. With heavily scienced based courses students study topics such as Histology, Oral Pathology. Micro Biology, Oral Facial Anatomy, Pharmacology, Emergency Care. etc. From the hundreds of applications received approximately 18 students are accepted each year, meaning only the best suited are accepted and the standards are very high. Clinical and laboratory experience is developed with supervised students working on patents in the 2nd and 3rd years. FOR YOUR INFORMATION • No referral is necessary.
