PICKERING -- R.,idcnt, in the Rou_Mc110unt
Drive/Altona Road area appear to be- at odds over
how the Town should deal with a local traffic
problem.
They asked Pickering Council's executive
committee Monday to impose: different solutions
for dealing with it.
Resident. of Dalew(xx1 Drive and Br(x)kndgc
Gate have complained to the Town that their
neighborhood has been made unsafe by all the
car-.% using the two streets as a shortcut to avoid
traffic at the intersection of Altona and Kingston
Roads. Residents of Rougemount Drive have had
the same grievance about their street, and the
Town hired a consulting firm to conduct a traffic

Mr. Berridge said Ontario's first toll road,

of avoiding congestion.
Roads consume xo per cent of new infra-

With ooC. vernment Funding tighter than

Therefore, politicians will place a higher
priority on putting commercial traffic on

Mr. Berridge said.

Read. Voorhees & Associ-
ates Ltd. makes recommen-
dations that include impos-
ing one of two possible turn
prohibition options. One
would prohibit through trat-
fic across Altona Road
between Valley Gate (from
where much of the through
traffic comes) and
Brookridge Gate. (arcing
traffic to turn either Ick or
: i ght to Altona. The other
,.k ould he to prohibit right
turns from Dalewood to
Rougemount and left turns

Anne White of the Rougc
Valley Community Assc,c:ia-

that her group would accept
the turn prohibitions at Dale -

opposes the through traffic
prohibition across Altona
because it would impede
area residents' access to the

support the residency requirement main-
tained the expertise of the representative
from both groups was more important
than where they IIve d.
Now DNA has decided it won't offer
a representative to sit on the committee
because none of its members with the
required expertise are from Pickering.
The: organization will send an observer
instead, who will not be eligible to vote
on the committee.
"We chose no( to send someone out-
side of our steering committee because
of the background that's required,.. says
DNA spokesman Irene Kock. Ms. Kock
will be DNA's observer, and says she
will do the best she can to track the com-
mittee's work and report on it to DNA
and the public.
She notes both DNA and PACT
believe the residency requirement is
"overly restrictive". If DNA needs to
i know what has gone on in a closed ses-
sion of the committee or wishes to have
a particular issue dealt with, she
explains, she'll work together with the
PACT member of the committee to
achieve those goals.
PACT chairman Dave Steele agrees it
would be good to have a Pickering DNA
representative on the committee if possi-
ble, but maintains the Town should have
allowed a non-resident to fill the posi-
tion in this case.
1f you don't have that expertise
which rs required to sit on that commit-
tee you go outside (the town)", he
explains, adding it could take someone
without experience "vcar:s' to get up to
speed on the complex nuclear issues the
committee will deal with.
PACT has had its representative
appointed to the committee. But Mr.
Steele says PACT won't try to persuade
other committee members to try to have
the residency requirement dropped
because it would be "a waste of time",
since he doesn't believe Council would
change its mind.
Mr. Steele vows PACT will work
with DNA to ensure important issues are
dealt with thoroxrghly.
Those who have been appointed to
the committee by the Town are: Coun-
cillors Shem Scros and Nlauncc Bren-
ner: Pickering nuclear plant director
Pierre Charlebois and Russ Fitchett of
the station's public affairs department.

En/() Girardi, co-chairman

group would accept only the

claimed tratlic volume and

problem. He asked the Town
to impose a lett-turn prnhihi-
tion from southix,und Altona
to Rougemount, and perhaps
at Brookridge as well to pre-
vent cars blocked from turn-
ing, to Rougemount from
turning there.
All the residents' groups
are in livor of the rest of the
consultant's recommenda-
tions. which include:
* Requesting Durham
Region proceed with the
widening of' Altona Road
between Kingston Road and
Sheppard Avenue to four
lanes to reduce the use of
area local roads: as an inter-
im measure Altona could he
widened between Kingston
and Brookridge:
* Requesting Durham review
off-peak signal timing at
Kingston and Altona and at
Kingston and Rougemount
Drive to reduce delays on
Altona during those hours
and minimizc the potential
for diversion to local streets.
* Asking police to step up
enforcement of the speed
limit on Rougemount:
* Adding sidewalks for
pedestrian safety .n Rouge -
mount and narrowing the
roadway when it is recon-
structed to reduce speed and
calm traffic flow:
Councillors made no dect-
sion on the turn prohibitions.
They voted to Teter the con-

Durham which would ha%e

Teaching
by example
NVell done Durham College. This hall of learning teaches
by example as well as the classra>m.
With sweeping $100 million cuts to colleges and universi-
ties. including S,.4 million from Durham College, campuses
all over Ontario have been reeling. The reduction in funding
should have come as no surprise to am of them, but some
have coped better than others with the crisis.
Durham has lost some scr%ices, educators and programs.
But it took its lesson from the squirrels and built its resene
funds to implement new programs which will secure a future
for the college
It also has the creativity to make revenues from business
partnerships and , entures and to keep overhead in check.
Community colleges built their niche by offering programs
that lead directly to the workplace. With the average per -Am
expected to change careers manx times. program planning
must be visionary.
Here. Durham has landed on the money. New programs
include diploma courses in computer programming and com-
puter science technology.
Trends indicate more people will he self-employed than
ever before. A new program for this market is well targeted.
Another example of estimating trends can be seen in the
addition of a post -diploma course in community nursing.
Again. the: future for nursing is changing in the direction of
Durham's programs.
Large organizations often lack the leverage to make
changes in time for survival. Other organizations and quite
possibly %Lhoo)l boards could learn from the job done by this
clear-sighted community college.

Sunday's best
Kudos to local environmentalist
for his `Olympic' recycling efforts
To the editor:
It is with a great deal of Canadian
pride that I find myself writing this
letter to your wonderful paper.
As an avid environmentalist. 1
was so pleased to read your article
in the Dec. 26 paper on Jack
McGinnis and his involvement with
the environment and his project with
the upcoming Summer Olympics.
Not to mention being the person to
actually set up the "blue box" pro-
gram, which is now, just a "given" in
most communities in this fabulous
country we call Canada.
To read about someone who has
found his "life work" was inspiring
enough, not to mention how humble
he appears to he about the changes
he is making in our lives and in the
lives of generations to come.
Accolades and generous congrat-
ulations to you, Mr. McGinnis.
Thank , ou so much and keep up the
wonderful work. We are so very
proud of you.

The least GM could do is compensate

To the editor:
I read your opinion on Jan. -11 about
the General Motors job applications

year later that none of the 25,000 appli-
cants were hired.
This is a despicable thing GM has
done to us and to itself. The least GM
could do for these people is compensate
them with a day's pay for their time and
effort.

Lessons
Yule use
We finally said goodbye to her last
week, after her annual one-month
visit. During the time she was with us,
she made quite a mess, littering the
living room where she stayed. She
was a little bit glitzy in her attire,
dressed up in sparkly things all the
time. We were able to put up with her
constant needling. But, she had a
serious drinking problem that we just
couldn't live with.
So, we had to throw her out on the
street the other day. She put up quite a
struggle as we tried to get her out the
door. scratching the girlfriend in the
process, poking me in the eye. We
ushered her out to the curb, where
she's still waiting to be picked up by
the first cute recycling truck guy who j
comes along. "Oh Christmas tree, oh
Christmas tree, we'll still he cleaning
up come February."
And, with each needle that we
pick out of a sock will come back a
memory of Christmas 1995. But, just
as we have some good memories, 1 i
have more than my fair share of hard
lessons that I learned over the
Yuletide season:
When it's time to go looking for a
Christmas tree next year, it's best not
to suggest "a nice artificial one. I sort
of like those shiny pink aluminum
jobbies." Especially not to a natural-
ist, who likes things green, she might
just turn her mate black and blue.
It's likely unwise, when you have
the week off before Christmas, to
spend several of those days at the
local striptease; joint when last-minute
stx>pping Wright he more appropriate. j
And, don't ever try to be cute about it
by quipping "I was out looking at
stocking stuffers."
Once you do get around to that
last-minute shopping thing, it's a
gaol idea to check out her wardrobe -
- yes, even rifle through the drawer of
girlie things -- to find out her correct
size. For it won't sit well if she opens
up her new undies and finds you've
bought her Keiko -butt bloomers when
she fits into a size 6.
It isn't very prudent, when sitting
around at the family's annual New
Year's Day get-together exchanging
favorite memories of Yuletides past,
to dredge up that story about the time
uncle Orville brought the cheap slat-
tern from the church bingo to
Christmas dinner the year his wife
was in hospital with a broken hip,
especially when aunt Thelma is host-
ing this particular gathering.
And, I don't advise sucking back
so much egg nog that your nose gets
as red as Rudolph's; asking your
cousin why she didn't buy more gifts
and then finding out she's been out -
placed by her downsizing company;
or using the unstuffed turkey as a hid-
ing place for your pet Doberman's
new chew toy.
Unless you want to end up, like
the poor discarded Christmas tree, out
at the curb in the cold.
