He had taken his daughter swimming at the McLean Communitv Centre in Ajax one day lank September when he noticed the motionless body of a small child on the bottom of the pool's deep end, St. John Ambu- lance reports. Const- Kozmic jumped in, alerting Jennifer, who also plunged into the pool. Together they pulled the six-year-old boy onto the deck. He was conscious and froth- ing at the mouth and nose. Using his St- John training, Const. Kozmic rolled the youngster onto his side and applied three sharp thrusts to his back. The child came to and began vomiting water. Emergency crews arrived and took the child to the hospital, where he was treated. He made a full recoven'. "You always feel good when you do something like that, especially when the little guy came around," says Const. Kozmic, who has put his life-saving skills to use a number of times. Major surgery is needed. But one proposal being put to provincial health ministers next month is bitter medicine for some doctors — and patients — to swallow. A 24 -page report prepared by consultants out- lines several models for a new health-care system, one of which would see doctors paid a fixed amount per patient rather than allowing them to charge fees for each service rendered. On the surface, this idea seems reasonable, even welcome; many other professionals make do with salaries, why not medical doctors? And the report was said to have been drafted with input from medical personnel. But the Canadian Medical Association denied Friday its members had been asked for input, and complained there's been no real debate on the issue. Under the new system, patients will be required to register for care at a community -pri- mary care organization" (PCOs). Some critics say doctors will become employees of the PCOs, and less an advocate for the patient. What's becoming increasingly clear is this new report is no quick -fix cure for what's ailing the medical system. It does deserve to be examined from all sides by physicians, taxpayers and patients alike. It's up to all of us to learn as much as we can about it and make our concerns and opinions known to our MPs in Ottawa. Apart from feeling terribly saddened for the families of the three, my emotion was piqued by mention in newspapers of Michael Battle's devotion to his dog, Jesse. This unusual insight into the private life of a deceased regard- ing a pet is rare nowadays and, being a lover of dogs myself, my heart ached when I contem- plated the future for that beloved pit bull, whose entire existence and life has been lived for, and with, his human companiorr. The press noted that Jesse was the focus of Mr. Battle's world: all his money and love went to this dog. One wonders and hopes that now, during this most difficult of times for those close to Michael Battle, that Jesse's grief is being acknowledged by Michael's family and friends and that his dog is being com- forted. An animal's grief in bereave- ment is tantamount to that of a human. I would like to think that the loneliness and anxiety Jesse must be suffering due to the loss of a doting master is not going unnoticed. H.J. Cudd Ajax Get ready to shoot in our hockey tourney It's true that newspapers often must report on the unpleasant things that happen in our commu- nities. Sometimes, though, we also get the first crack at reporting on something fun, something_ bright, or something that raises the pro- file of groups and people who do good in the community. That's the purpose of this col- umn. I ask that you tum your attcn- tion to the Bid_ Brothers Association of Ajax -Pickering, an organization which tries to match fatherless boys with a Big Brother to provide them with guidance, structure and some fun times. The News Advertiser is kind of soft on the Big Brothers orga- nization. We believe in what they do, and we've seen examples of the effect their volunteers have on Little Brothers. Currently, the local group needs matches for 23 youngsters. They provide a needed service for these kids, and each year we like to do our little part to see that their work con- tinues. That's why we're moving ahead with our third annual 3 - on -three ball hockey tournament steve houston TheManaging Editor's Disk in Ajax. We have room for 32 teams to battle, in good spirit, for brag- gim, rights on the brill hockey court. There are prizes for the tournament cham- pions and the conso- lation winners, as well as the promise of a fun day out. Last year, the News Advertiser helped raise approximately $500. Everyone who came out, whether to take part or just take in the action, had a good day of fun in the autumn sun. Everyone who competed last year is welcome to take part again; as are any newcomers who believe they can walk the walk on the ball hockey court. Keep an eye on the News Advertiser in the coming days and weeks for registration information and the rules of play. There's no Stanley Cup at the end (although there will be prizes for the winners), but your partici- pation will go a long way to help- ing out a worthy community cause. We're looking forward to another successful tournament. Let the games begin. 0 Pickering approval of Montessori school appealed at OMB FROM PAGE 1 what it cited as planning principles and that Town staff informed hun the application woe by the current landowner rejected. Mr. Leofanti's letter to the Town clerk regarding the appeal raises questions about why mayor Wayne Anthers called a meeting to "push throegh" the application during the summer recess, why Mr. Leofanti bad not been informed of the meeting despite having made such a request, and why three councillors who were strongly opposed to the school changed their positions without explanation. The notice suggests that "back- room politics was the motivating force behind this approval, rather than sound planning considerations." Jose De La Torre, current owner of the former Stroud's Market land who will lease the building to the school's Operators, says Mr. Leofanti's previ- ous application was completely dif- ferent, as it was for a school on the Opposite corner of the intersection. Mr. De La Torre and his partner Shirley Copp contend in a letter given to the News Advertiser the Leofantis "never applied for a Montessori school at our location, so they have no reason to complain that we were given approval for a Montessori school. Their position is ill-considered.^ The letter continues, "We did everything to the letter in order to comply with the requirements of the community and the planning depart- ment. It is completely without foun- dation for (anyone) to imply that we received any special political consid- eration. The successful applicants say they will seek compensation for any loss of revenue caused by the delay of the school's opening by an OMB hear- ing. Enrollment in the new school has nearly reached capacity of about 65, according to Eleanor Wilson, Blaisdale Montessori principal and sister of property co-owner Shirley Copp. Councillor Sherry Senis says her initial opposition to the Montessori school, which she called "an accident waiting to happen" at a meeting ear- lier this year, was due to the fact that the application was for a three-year temporary rezoning. She originally felt that a start-up company would not have sufficient time within that period to break even. When she learned that Blaisdale Montessori was a well-established company Operating other schools, she said her concern was alleviated. Of the accusation about back -room dealings, councillor Senis says it is "very unfair (to portray) politicians in this light when it isn't true." Councillor Enrico Pistriuo, who also changed his position to support the school, says his concerns over the children's safety were sufficiently addressed when the owners promised to construct a double fence around the property. Also, to protect them from strangers, the children will have to shape hands with one of the staff before departing. He says be is still uneasy about the location, but sup- ported the application because of its temporary nature.
