Al McLean (Simcoe East), and Lib-
eral Gilles Morin (Carleton East).
Ms. Ecker says whoever is picked
speaker "will have an impact on the
tone of the House."
All three candidates are "very
experienced in the legislature", hav-
ing served when their parties
formed the government and when in
opposition.
Following the vote on the speak-
er, the government's Throne Speech
to be read by Lieutenant -Governor
Hal Jackman will outline the
Tories' plans.
Ms. Ecker says some of the legis-
lation the government will proceed
with is "getting rid of the job -
killing Bill 40 (the New Democratic
Party government's labor legisla-
tion). We can't just get rid of it. We
also have to have replacement legis-
lation."
Another initiative will be the
elimination of MPP pensions, to be
replaced with an RRSP plan.
A mini -budget will be released in
late October or early November, she
adds.
"It will continue the direction
we've taken. There will be further
spending reductions, for sure." Ms.
Ecker notes.
The spending cuts announced in
July were part of an -economic
statement" and not a budget, she
says. "There were no economic
forecasts. It was a state of the
books, with mid -year spending
adjustments."
The fall session is slated to end
Dec_ 14, but Ms. Ecker says the leg-
islature could sit until Christmas.

DURHAM — For a
teacher about to open the
book on her first full-time

means the beginning of a
long-awaited adventure.
"I'm very excited,"
enthuses Dana Yates,

Being prepared is the
best way for teachers to
approach their first year in
the classroom, according
to veteran educators.
'"New teachers really
worry," notes Don Real, a
principal who recently
retired from the Durham
Board of Education. "They
spend a lot of their sum-

to make sure they have the
stuff they need for the
kids.
"That's a good idea.
They should have stuff

He also advises new

And that is as it should be. There can be no bene-

part of a larger government, answering to a larger
bureaucracy.
We don't need bigger government, we need more
efficient government. We don't need expansion, we
need consolidation. And we agree with Mayor
Witty's suggestion that every municipality in the
GTA could benefit from some reform, without creat-
ing a 'super region'.
Taxpayers would benefit from an integrated GTA
mass transit link. They would benefit frau one GTA
economic development office. They would benefit
from one waste authority with representation from
member municipalities. They would benefit from uni-

that are duplicated.
Public officials in Ajax and Pickering see that
they have no place opting for a smaller voice in a big-

Metro may be bigger, but bigger isn't better.

Waterfront trail wins praise, but some call for improvements
a trail which overlooks 325 kilo-
metres of glorious waterfront.
When a guidebook to the
Waterfront Trail landed on my
desk and instructions to check out
the Ajax and Pickering portion of
the trail followed, I knew he was
for real.
The trail is the brainchild of the
Waterfront Regeneration Trust, a
provincial agency headed by for-
mer Toronto mayor David Crom-
bie.
Though the trail opened with
much hype in May — linking
many existing paths — I knew
little about it. So I began asking
questions.
I couldn't find one person who
didn't love the concept of linking
Ilamilton to Trenton along Lake
Ontario. But all maintain the trail
is premature because it forces you

With that in mind, I opted to
take my family to the trail in
Ajax, where a 10 -foot wide
asphalt path lends itself to
strollers, as well as cyclists, jog-
gers, in-line skaters and people in
wheelchairs.
Not surprisingly, there were
dozens and dozens of people
enjoying a Sunday morning out-
ing.
My daughter loved it because it
gave her a chance to practise two
of her favorite words: bird and
dog, because there were lots of
them too.
"I'm down here with my kids
about three times a week " report-
ed roller blader Stacy Hart. -It's
one of the reasons why we moved
down here, so we could be closer
to the lake.
"I'd go farther if it linked up
on the water." admits the Ajax
resident. "It's really nice though.
There are always people down
here. I've never been here with-
out seeing lots of other people."
Pickering residents Susan and
Bruce Metzger enjoy the Picker-
ing portion of the trail, but often
load their two -and -a -half year-old
son Travis and their bikes into the
car to cycle the Ajax path.
We prefer Ajax for riding,
though we wish it was a bit
Ion-er," admits Susan.
For four-year-old Tyler Lowy
of Ajax, the trail gives him a
chance to do what he does best:
roller blade "super fast ... at super
sonic speeds."
He's decked out in all the pro-
tective gear, as is buddy Michael
W
Lum-alker. 4, who has "four
favorite" pastimes at the lake:
throwing rocks into the water.
feeding geese, playing in the
playground and roller Nading.
" VVe usually come down a cou-
ple of times a
week." says his
father. Stuart.
The trail runs par-
allel to the lake and
stretches east along,
the bluffs, which
aren't very high.
Access to the beach
is possible at a num-
ber of points. In
winter, the trail is
not cleared, making
it ideal for cross-
country skiing,

Durham's deafpushp remier to
revive 60anunit housing
By GLENN HENDRY
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER
DURHAM — The region's deaf
community is hoping Premier Mike
Harris will reconsider their 60 -unit
housing project that was axed two
months ago.
In a letter faxed Monday to archi-
tect Ellis Kirkland, who was work-
ing on the cancelled project, Premier
Harris promised to "hear your con-
cerns."
But, following negative comments
received from the premier immedi-
ately after the 55 -million project
was chopped, Monday's response
has Mrs. Kirkland and representa-
tives of Durham Deaf Services
guardedly optimistic.
"Last month Harris said thanks,
but no thanks. Now the government
is saying they're Prepared to listen,"
Mrs. Kirkland says. "I'm not jaded
enough to believe the Premier of
Ontario will write me and not live
up to his promise. If he says he will
listen, I believe him."
Mrs. Kirkland, however, told
members of Durham's deaf commu-
nity Monday night the government
will not have a change of heart
unless it feels the heat from the
community, and she is urging people
to write, fax or phone Mr. Harris,
Housing Minister Al Leach and area
M PPs.
"Up until now, this was a devel-
opment project for your community.
Now, however, it has become politi-
cal," she says. "The only thing you
can do now is use your numbers to
push the government to finish what
they promised.-
It
romised "It has been a long road for the
local deaf community in getting this
project, which would be unique in
Ontario, off the ground. The plan-
ning began five years ago and
Durham Deaf Services won
approval in late March. It then pro-
ceeded to make an offer to purchase
land at Ritson Road and Hillcroft
Street and hired The Kirkland Part-
nership of Toronto to design the
building, which was to have extras
like light -activated doorbells and
fire alarms in the units and special
wiring to accommodate teletype
equipment. Three months later, the
new premier pulled the plug.
"He was very disappointing. Our
group has worked many years on
this project and there is a great
need," says Gayle Morton, a com-
munity and social services worker at
Durham Deaf Service's Oshawa
headquarters.
"We didn't understand what they
were doing. They said the cutbacks
would not affect seniors or people
with disabilities. This project is 100
per cent for members of the deaf
community."
Still, she is happy the premier is
now prepared to listen to local con-
cerns. "It's a start."
Don Wilson, who sits on the deaf
services board, is also optimistic Mr.
Harris is ready to listen. He and his
wife, who are both deaf, were going
to move into the building when it
was completed.
"I was mad and very disappointed
and my wife was very disappointed
(when the project was chopped). We
were looking forward to a nicer,
cleaner apartment. But I feel opti-
mistic now because I think we have
a very good chance. We'll fight for
it."
Mrs. Kirkland says the next 10
days will be critical to the success of
the project. She is willing to argue
economics with the premier, citing
hospital bills of $60,000 to $100,000
per year for some deaf residents who
could be living in the housing pro-
ject instead.
She will also argue the desperate
need for the building, especially
when a new trade centre in Toronto,
with a price tag of several hundred
million dollars, was not cut by the
Tories. A
nd she has been given support in
the fight from Oshawa mayor Nancy
Diamond, who promised to set up a
meeting with local MPPs to plead
the rase for the project.
"The Durham deaf community
shouldn't suffer because there was a
government change," Mrs. Kirkland
says. "But it's our job to get the
politicians to get us back through the
door. The decision is going to be
purely political now."

Ajax girls
win third
straight
tourney
AJAX — Winning tournaments is
becoming a habit for the Ajax
Warriors Mr. Greek/Swiss Chalet
girls' under -15 soccer team.
Last weekend, the squad won its
third tourney in as many weeks,
capturing the Durham Recreational
Select Tournament in Uxbridge.
Previous tournament wins came in
Whitby and Burlington.
To take the Durham title, Ajax
knocked off Oshawa 4-2 in the
final.
Playing in the championship game
was hard on the girls because the
team bad one hour between their
semi-final win over Darlington
before taking the Geld for the final.
The Oshawa squad had a four-hour
rest after its semi-final match.
The Warriors opened the scoring
on a goal by Emma Ito, but Oshawa
took a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes left
to play. Jessie Knowles tied the
score with six minutes remaining to
send the game into overtime. The
teams played two 10 -minute halves
in the overtime.
Knowles completed her hat trick
by scoring the only two goals in OT.
It was a team effort that won the
game, but the coaches make note of
the outstanding play of goalie and
captain Katie Wheler, Cathy Walton
and Andrea Brown on defence,
Lindsay Anderson, Colleen
McQuaid and Mandy Nelson in
midfield, and Knowles, Michelle
Anderson and Ito at forward.
The Warriors started the tourna-
ment with a 1-0 win over Darlington
on a goa; by McQuaid. Wheler reg-
istered the shutout.
Ajax then blanked Pickering 3-0,
with Knowles scoring two and Ito
one. Wheler got her second shutout,
while other players who shined
were Knowles, Michelle Anderson,
Ito, Christine Lasseter, Lindsay
Anderson, Walton, Colleen Faux
and Brown.
The win over Pickering put Ajax
into the semis against Darlington,
which the Warriors won 5-4 in over-
time. Knowles had a hat trick, with
singles by Laura Calhoun and
Nelson.

Kim Blakey, Cathy Walton, Andrea
