There was about a one -per cent increase in the amount of traffic last year and a 1.6 -per cent increase in the number of accidents over 1993. In '94, there were 13 accidents that resulted in 16 deaths, including two in Pickering, four fatalities in Ajax and Oshawa, five in Scugog, and one in Clarington. During the 1990s, the worst year for deaths on regional roads was 1991, when 21 people were killed. Of the accidents on regional roads, just over 2,900 resulted in property damage and 1,076 involved personal injury. More than 1,600 people were injured in accidents last year. Almost 80 per cent of accidents and 10 of 13 fatalities happened at an intersection with traffic lights or at mid -block (between intersections). That number is up from last summer's enrol- ment of 350. While most teachers attending the workshops this summer are from Durham's public board, others had from Nova Sco- tia, Newfoundland and Quebec. Why Durbam? "It's known as a leader in education in the province," says Ginny Czaczkowski, from Lakehead in northern Ontario. "We get new ideas and build on ideas we already have" Oshawa's Donevan Col- legiate Institute teacher Rudy Schmidt — who's attending courses — hosted visitors from Pakistan, Ver- mont and Quebec last year who "wanted to see how a (teaching theory) works in the trenches." The board has earned its reputation by marketing staff development, notes senior staff development co-ordinator Norm Green. He predicts the board will bring in $400,000 over the next three years by "marketing and selling things tt:achers need". That income is welcomed in an era when budgets are cut routinely to keep taxes low. It also supplements the board's cost of training its own teachers. (The board charges its teachers $75 for summer courses, while oth- ers pay from $250 to $325.) Though "there was a lot of controversy over the building of (the board's S21 -million administrative centre)," Mr. Green credits it with helping increase e' approach emohnent. "People walk in bete and know they're dealing with a world-class operation. We're no longer operating out of a shoebox " Courses offered this sum- mer include cooperative learning because "that's what industry is asking for," notes Mr. Green. "It wants people who know how to resolve conflict in a team situation." It's also an effective teaching strategy for stu- dents "whose attention spans are not as long as they used to be. They're the video generation. When they're interacting with each other, their focus is better, especially if the teacher is managing well.- That ell"That course is also attended by an electrical skills teacher at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Caarington. "Any train- ing we can get to get our message across is wel- comed," says Tim Mad- dock. Meanwhile, some Durham teachers have trav- elled to Holland — at their own expense — to learn about the role of parent councils in Dutch educa- tion. The councils, to be introduced here this year, have been in place there 20 years - Such trips also build upon the reputation of Durham teachers, according to Mr. Green. A Dutch board, for example, has rec- ommended the Durham board be involved in the restructuring of education in Jamaica. Ile and girlfriend Toby Bate- son reached Ajax Sunday evening. completing a 46 -day bicycle trek from Whistler, British Columbia- Mr. olumbiaMr. Mustonen is from Ajax, but hasn't been home in four years - The pair live and work in Whistler and decided "to take the summer off and see Cana- da. We decided to go by bike because we wanted to meet people and see the landscape. And, did we see the land- scape," Mr. Mustonen says. They made the decision in February and began plan- ning then to cycle across the country. They left WhMer on June 15. Along the way, they pri- marily stayed in camp grounds, although on three nights they camped on the side of the road_ One night in Mansfield, a town halfway between Toronto and Collingwood, they got caught in a storm and stopped at a gas station. We asked if we could stay behind the station in the grass. They said yes, but they got to know us and said we could stay in the front under the sign (canopy). The lady who owned the station came by and said we could stay at her house. We had a shower and she fed us. In the morning, she made breakfast," Mr. Mustonen says. "People were absolutely incredible," be notes. "They would see we were carrying everything and they trusted us. People would come up to talk to us. Mr. Mustonen wants everyone to know the Prairies "aren't flat. Thev're rolling hills." They had been told the Prairies were de -so - late, but the pair found oth- erwise, he notes. On Monday. they left for Brockville to visit Ms. Bate -son's mother. Mr. Mus- tonen also plans to cycle to Ottawa to visit friends. They're flying back to Whistler, but at different times. Ms. Bateson returns to work Aug;. 14 and Mr. Mustonen Sept. 1. He plans on spending, a few weeks in Ajax visiting family and friends. Mr. Mustonen would recom- mend to anyone "without hesi- tation" a similar trip. If anyone wants to undertake a cross-country ride. Mr. Mus- tonen has some tips. "Try to keep your gear as dry as possible. It's a lone trip and it's a hugc country, so don't give up and take it day by day." On Wodoesday, Nov. 8, Grade 9 students will spend a day at work with a parent, relative, adult friend or volunteer through Take Our Kids To Work. The concept of taking a stu- dent to work was first introduced in Durham two years ago and involved 1,000 students from eight schools. Last year, Take Our Kids to Work was launched in the Greater Toronto Area. This you, it has been expand- ed to encompass the entire province, making it the first of its kind in Canada. The project is organized by the Learning Partnership, a non- profit group founded in 1993, dedicated to creating challenging learning and caner opportunities by bonding education, business, and community. Take Our Kids to Work aims to offer students a realistic view of the work world and its demands, to help them empathize with what their par- ents do to support the family, and understand the community responsibility for preparing younger generations for the future. In fact the growth of our population over age 65 can be attributed to the development and availability of new medicine and vaccines. But with new remedies come new questions. Older adults face greater medical risks, particularty when taking more than one drug at a time. While persons over age 65 comprise 13 percent of our population, they use 30% of the prescription drugs. Seniors often suffer from long-term illnesses, including arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. If you are over 65, you may face two or more of these illnesses at the same time. Therefore, it's important for you to know which drugs mix and which ones don't. The following are guidelines for safe drug use: *Take the exact amount prescribed by your doctor and follow the dosage schedule as closely as possible. *Never take drugs prescribed for a friend or relative, even if your symptoms are the same. -Always let your doctor and pharmacist know if you're reacted poorly to medicines in the past. *Be sure your doctor and pharmaast know all the medicines you currently take including prescription and over-the-counter ones. -Keep a daily record of the medicines you're taking, especially if taking more than one. -Make sure you understand the dosage directions on your container. ,-Discard old medicines.
