And, Nuclear Awareness Project researcher Irene Kock contends Hydro "should not be allowed to operate (Darlington and Bruce) nuclear stations with known design flaws" that the Atomic Energy Con- trol Board reports exist in all CANDU reactors and which the nuclear regulatory agency says con- tributed to a major accident at the Pickering plant last year. She's reacting to a report by an AECB investigation team made pub- lic las: week that also says the loss of coolant accident at the Pickenng Nuclear Generating Station's Reac- tor 2 on Dec. 10 was made worse because operators followed written procedures. The design flaw was also respon- sible for a similar accident May 14 at the Bruce nuclear plant on Lake Huron which caused an 87 -tonne heavy water spill. It could be the future. And Pickering is leading the way in the tech- nological age of public IRwaries. "I shudder at the thought of my chil- dren not being able to handle a book" says Jill Faster, shah a t of the Picker- f ing Public I.Axary Board y But already residents are gobbling up the CD-ROM wdmology at the Picker- ing Central Library, having used it more than 20,000 times in 1994 ---the highest:` usage in the province for such a service. ..,. r7l': , o "We haven't gone out to has a mcxc than any other library,- says Sandy Cameron, chief executive officer. -it just seems to be a more efficient, cost- effcctive way of providing informa- tion." It's the first time, according to Ms. Foster, such a pian has been written for any library. Regardless of the rapid technological changes, the board still cortsiders its pri- mary function to offer a "traditional- librari as users still demand traditional sen i--cs. Two thirds of the town's rc si- dents arc active members of the library, the highest level in Ontario, with over 56.000 members borrowing 92-71,000 itcrns last year. Mr. Cameron attributes the high rate of use to a well-educated public. Ms. Foster feels the towm's "neighborhood" make-up is a major factor, as a library offers a sense of community. The commitment to tradition is evi- dent in the board's provision of funds- for undsfor the restoration of the Whitevaie ILAL MARSHAU TRAVEL ARIZONAISOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 8 day Tour Departs: Sat. Students at three Pickering high schools applied to partici- pate in the program. Based on the preliminary applications, Melissa and three other Dunbarton stu- dents had to answer a series of essay questions and take part in an interview with a selection panel made up of Rotary Club members. Club president Tom Sears notes this is the first exchange local Rotarians have sponsored in five years. "It's a great opportunity for students to broaden their minds (and to) broaden international m a standing," he says. Melissa has not made a list of activities she wants to do during her trip. Although meals and accommo- dation are provided by the host families, Melissa must cover the cost of her flight. She intends to raise part of the money through her job as a soccer referee. The rest will be covered by her fami- ly. When asked how fluent she is in German, Melissa says, "I've learned a little bit, (but) I'm going to have to learn it while I'm there." Melissa is going with the understanding that she won't nec- essarily receive credit for her schooling in Germany.
