They picked up two medals at the annual Provincial Secondary Think Bowl competi- tion, held at the Durham Board of Education Centre in Whitby May 7. The senior team, made up of students from Grades 11 to OAC, earned gold with a first - place finish. Team members were Pauline Fujita, Sarah Iwata, Edie Kim, Rishi Rakhit and Irene Papakonstantinou. The school's intermediate team of Grade 9 and 10 students collected a silver medal with a second -place finish. Team members were Andy Brown, Vicki George, Jennifer Eathorne, Natasha Rudnick and Myles DeRosse. Think Bowl involves a formal creative problem -solving process designed to generate novel ideas to resolve diverse problems. Students are specifically trained to follow the creative problem -solving method. They must work in groups of five to com- plete a problem -solving booklet. They then illustrate their best solution to the given problem through a dramatic presen- tation. This year, students from the Durham Board, Lincoln County, Northumberland- Clarington and Niagara South were asked to solve an environmental problem. Those teams qualified for the provincial competition after winning at their respective regional meets. The only exception was Pickering High's intermediate team. So says Tanya Gulliver, a gay activist who'd like to adopt her partner's sons. It would give me the right to legally sign notes for them for school. Right now, I don't even have the right to take them to a doctor," explains the Whitby resident. "If their mother died, I have no right over them whatsoever. Adopting them would help ensure their family is preserved, no matter what happens." An Ontario judge has declared unconstitutional an Ontario law which says couples must be of the opposite sex to adopt a child. Although his decision is specific to four lesbian couples from Toronto, it is expected to set a legal precedent for same-sex couples across the country. The decision comes less than a year after Bill 167 was defeated at Queen's Park. That law would have ex anded the who publicly declared her bisexuality when she sat as a Durham Board of Education trustee last term. (She believes her sexual orientation was an issue in last November's municipal elections, when voters didn't return her to the board.) While Ms. Gulliver does- n't think the ruling will affect the out- come of the upcoming provincial elec- tion, she believes "it will increase awareness of gay issues." She also hopes the ruling will "impact other issues, like welfare and employee benefits%" for gay couples. Ms. Gulliver hopes critics of the rul- ing learn to accept that same-sex cou- ples are raising children and will "respect our family relationships and allow us to maintain our families to the best that we can. To their chagrin, Ontario Provincial Police have been discovering unsafe loads and vehicles during recent spotchecks, underscoring the need for drastic reform of the trucking industry and its regulation. Not only should patrols in Durham be maintained, they should be stepped up in light of recent events on provincial highways. Indeed, the ribbon of asphalt which runs through the middle of Durham Region is an important economic link as goods are transported, but the safety of the trucks which carry them must be para- mount. They do, after all, share the mad with thousands of others. The deaths this year of two people — including one unfortunate Whitby woman -- who were hit by loose truck wheels further proves that fact. So too does the recent announcement that a coroner's inquest will be held to examine the safety of the vehicles which dot our highways all day, every day, all year. The sentiments of one OPP officer after a recent sur- prise inspection blitz provides the clearest perspective on the trucking issue so far. "This is something that should have been done a long time ago. We have a lot Of trucks in our area and Were certaiiily is a need for iL" The Durham stretch of Hwy. 401 is an important link in the movement of goods around the Golden Horseshoe. Consequently, there must be zero wleraoce and per- sistent monitoring of the vehicles to make the link work effectively and safely. Too many lives would be left at nslk otherwise. .it'd ... Supportyour Philharmonic To the editor Since its first performance in May 1993, the Pickering Philharmonic Orchestra has grown to serve the communities of Ajax and Pickering. This fledgling orchestra has struggled to become financially viable, to have a caps of active volunteers and, most importantly, to showcase the tal- ents of local artists such as flatthu Ron Korb and Mr. Dressup (Ernie Coombs). The organization will start its third promising season in September. Many so-called 'community" orchestras in areas surrounding Toronto are actually secondary venues for Toronto-based profes- sional musicians. These groups inevitably run into debt as they try to "maintain high performance standards" without regard for the equally high service fees demand- ed by those professionals. Actual community musicians, though unpaid, are relegated to secondary positions, thus prohibit- ing the artistic and educational growth of the very community members for which these perform= Mg groups are established. I applaud the Pickering Philharmonic for recently taking a stand to create a true community- based omhestra with more than 70 per cent of its talent drawn from Durham Region. Such a policy will enable this group to serve us both artistically and in the educa- tion of our aspiring young musi- cians who have no access to orchestral performance in our schools. Unfortunately, our philharmon- ic must ask that we, as an audi- ence, be patient and generous in our support of its endeavor. It may be another two or three seasons before the group's performance standards come close to those of orchestras who feed the coffers of their commuting Toronto musi- cians. It was with great surprise when I opened the News Advertiser recently to find an article about yet another "community" orchestra in our area calling itself "Orchestra Durham". How can Ajax and Pickering support another orches- tra when the Pickering Philharmonic has not yet reached its maturity? Who decides if Ajax and Pickering actually needs another such group at a time when long-standing owbestras such as the Oshawa Symphony are feeling a financial crunch? Please support our Pickering Philharmonic, either financially, as a volunteer, as a musician or as an enthusiastic member of its audi- ence. Namcyri"g, More on truck safety... To the editor: Re: Runaway wheels. Two deaths in three months, one woman blinded for life and who knows how many more people have been injured by flying tires and other truck pans? Two deaths too many. Helpless people are ga- ting killed and it has to stop! It's time these truck owners are made to make sure their vehicles are safe. It's a fact accidents like this happen all over the world. One cause is the dmange in the tempera - Ow in the spring. The roads start to crack and soon those cracks turn into big pothoies.
