"It was well planned," according to Pat Blom, vice- president of patient services at Ajax and Pickering General Hospital. She says shutting down 10 beds on two floors — which was also done at Christmas — was "much easier" than clos- ing a whole floor. The beds and operating room closed March 4 and are scheduled to reopen March 20. That has left the hospital with 98 general beds and three operating rooms open. The ambulatory and intensive care units, the emergency department and maternal and newborn ser- vices have been operating as usual. About $30,000 will be saved to allow the hospital to meet its social contract tar- gets. The closure has coin- cided with the school March break, which is traditionally a quieter time at the hospital. No staff were laid off as a result of the shutdown. Though the men — charged in an early morning raid at Terry Sheridan's Country Show and Bar on Bayly Street in July — appeared in Ontario Court, General Division in Toronto on Wednesday, no trial date was set. They will appear in court again April 18. It is expected a trial date will be set at that time. A month-long preliminary hearing for the four men was held in Scarborough provincial court in January. Two police officers who pursued a stolen van into Scarborough, but then lost it, were also shot at by the sus- pects- Miraculously, no one was injured during the robbery. As a result of joint investigation by the Metro Toronto Police holdup squad and the Durham Regional Police rob- bery unit, three 18 -year-old Markham men and a 19 -year-old Scarborough man were charged with 13 counts of robbery, one count of using a firearm in the commission of a crime, one count of being disguised with the intent of committing a crime and one count of possession of a dangerous weapon. One of the men also faces a charge of attempted murder. "Those three, we felt, were the highest -problem intersections," Mr. Aker said. There are 15 intersec- tions in Durham that war- rant lights under provin- cial guidelines, because of the number of accidents there, the volume of vehi- cles and traffic tie-ups on nearby side streets. You can't win on this thing. Everybody will have an intersection in their community warrant- ed for lights and won't be receiving them," Mr. Aker said. The cost to just install lights is about 573,000 per intersection and the Region only has enough money for three sites, Mr. Aker reported. Making improvements at an intersection, such as widening the road to add an extra lane, is a "signifi- cant cost", works commis- sioner Vic Silgailis said. The three recommended intersections don't need improvements, Mr. Silgailis added. Oshawa councillor Brian Nicholson ques- tioned how the works committee could decide on the three intersections before it meets. "Seven of eight com- mittee members made a decision and now they're going to formalize that decision to this council." he charged. Mr. Aker said the rec- ommendation on which intersections are selected could change on Tuesday. He said in an interview, "Councillors are right to fight for (lights)." If the Region had more money, lights would be installed at more intersec- tions, Mr. Aker added. In 1993 and '94. Durham installed lights at three intersections annual- ly. The works committee decision will go to region- al council on Wednesday, March 29 for considera- tion. The news would be good indeed for Durham commuters who get stuck in westbound Hwy. 401 traffic jams every day at rush hour. Durham Region chairman Gary Herrema said Wednesday that, based on information coming from Ministry of Transportation staff, the Province will make a statement at the end of the month that will be "transportation related and may include 407 " Mr. Herrema says be's confident the announcement will make local commuters a little happier. Right now construction on Hwy. 407 is under way in the regions of Peel and York but, thus far, plans are to end the first phase of the roadway at Hwy. 48 in Markham. Durham Region council has done its part to let the provincial government know we need the 407 in Durham by voting unanimously to request the Province extend Hwy. 407 to Clarington. The arrival of Hwy. 407 in Durham would undoubtedly be of great benefit to our community. At this point, it's all speculation as to what the big announcement will contain at the end of the month. It's in the bands of the transportation minis- ter. The fact public school board trustees want to cut the proposed tax hike in half may be good news for some, but not for us. As silent as most taxpayers we, something has to be done to curb spending. For the last few years our household budget did not see any increase as the salaries of my hus- band and I were not only frozen, but were smaller due to cuts in work time, increases in personal taxes, etc. And, as we do not have any pos- sibility to tax anybody to help us cope with our expenses and renova- tions and repairs, we learn to man- age with what we have. Anyone can learn this trick. We understand perfectly the needs of schools, students or trustees (as long as it does not include an increase in salaries or expensive gifts for departing ones). However, the simple truth is there is no more money in the till. Your story on Feb. 12 about tax increases in Ajax is also not good news. Why were we singled out? Are we statistically the richest in Durham? In the good -old days when a household needed a new barn, often it was done by friends, parents and neighbors. Blizzard would not guarantee local talent would form the nucleus of the club next season. "Every young man will have a chance to make the club from Durham Region," he says. "I'm going to look at them all. If they can show me that they can play on this team, then they will be here. Most of the local talent has gone elsewhere and we have to get them back." So far, Blizzard says the local reaction to the sale of the club has been positive. He's received numer- ous calls from people formerly involved with the Panthers offering their assistance. "They want to see the club get back off the ground". He further plans to strengthen the ties between the club and the PHA, to resurrect a Panthers' booster club for the fans during the games, and to organize an annual golf tournament as a major fund-raiser for the junior squad. By AL RIVETT SPORTS REPORTER PICKERING — The Pickering Panthers may have been spared a move out of town after the Metro Junior `A' Hockey League club was purchased by a local businessman last week. The Panthers now belong to Michael Boyer, owner of Boyer Pontiac -Buick -GMC Ltd., who bought the club from Pickering res- ident Bill Barber, owner since November of 1991. The club changed hands last Friday, with the deal to be I ized by late April. details of the pur chase were dis- closed. Ron Blizzard, 41, the Panthers' new general manager and an eight-year employee at Boyer Pontiac -Buick -GMC, says the club would likely have been purchased and moved to another town had Boyer not intervened. "I think there were other buyers interested in the club. My feeling is this club would have been moved out of Pickering;' says Blizzard, a first-time GM who played college - level hockey in the '70s. Blizzard says Boyer purchased the club, which has dwelled at or near the bottom of the league's standings for the past several years, primarily as a goodwill gesture to the Pickering community. "He played hockey himself and his boys play hockey in the PHA (Pickering Hockey Association). He was not looking to buy the club for his kids. He decided to buy the club because the community has been good to him, and he wanted to give something back to the commu- nity." Financial considerations, ill health, an ongoing feud with the Town of Pickering over ice time and a desire to pursue other busi- ness interests were listed by Barber as reasons for selling the club. Barber notes bad choices of head coaches and gen- eral managers for Panthers — except or current coach and general manager terry Tilson — were the prime reason the team didn't reach its potential on the ice. "I've picked some horrible gen- eral managers and coaches. I think that's why we've had such a disas- trous time," says Barber. He adds the club has operated as a non-prof- it enterprise and has been financial- ly self-supporting over the past couple of years. Blizzard notes he's been given a free reign to run the team by Boyer. As such, he intends an entire shake- up and rebuilding of the club, which finished this year's regular season in last place in the Bauer Division. "ormer . wner Barber weeks, right from the stick boy through to the head coach. "The team needed a facelift. It definitely needed a change," explains Blizzard. "We want to bring the fans back to the games. We want to build a first-class organiza- tion. And, the managers will manage it and the coaches will coach it. I'm going to bring in someone (to coach the team) who knows the game." A new head coach will be hired "within the next few weeks". So far, Blizzard has interviewed five candi- dates from a list of 15 vying for the position. A decision on the bench boss is imminent as the club will begin preparing for the 1995-96 sea- son with its annual rookie camp in May. The Toshiba 'Cardiac Kids' knocked off Bowmanville in the fifth and decid- ing game, their second win in a row, with an exciting 6-5 victory at Don Beer Arena March 6. Pickering now faces the Vaughan Rangers in the York-Simcoe finals which get under way shortly. Michael Mitchell led the troops in the crucial contest, scoring three times and adding two assists. The Panthers finished with a record of a win, a loss and a tie at the recent West London Select Tournament. However, the record wasn't good enough to qualify for the playoffs. Pickering played to a 2-2 draw with Kitchener in the tourney open- er. Tony McMulkin and Andrew Goodine scored, with assists to Darryl Malandrino and Kevin Winslow. The Formula Honda peewees then edged Oakridge 3-2. Goodine, Malandrino and McMulkin were the goal getters, with assists to Chris Bryden, James Kimball, Kevin Fleming, Ryan Tracy and Winslow.
